RESUMO

Two Gram-stain-negative, Fe(III)-reducing, facultatively anaerobic, motile via a single polar flagellum, rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated IMCC35001T and IMCC35002T, were isolated from tidal flat sediment and seawater, respectively. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that IMCC35001T and IMCC35002T shared 96.6 % sequence similarity and were most closely related to Ferrimonas futtsuensis FUT3661T (98.6 %) and Ferrimonas kyonanensis Asr22-7T (96.8 %), respectively. Draft genome sequences of IMCC35001T and IMCC35002T revealed 4.0 and 4.8 Mbp of genome size with 61.0 and 51.8 mol% of DNA G+C content, respectively. Average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the two strains were 73.1 and 19.8 %, respectively, indicating that they are separate species. The two genomes showed ≤84.4 % ANI and ≤27.8 % dDDH to other species of the genus Ferrimonas, suggesting that the two strains each represent novel species. The two strains contained both menaquinone (MK-7) and ubiquinones (Q-7 and Q-8). Major fatty acids of strain IMCC35001T were iso-C15 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c, C17 : 1 ω8c and C16 : 0 and those of strain IMCC35002 T were C18 : 1 ω9c, C16 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c). Major polar lipids in both strains were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, unidentified phospholipid, unidentified aminophospholipid and unidentified lipids. The two strains reduced Fe(III) citrate, Fe(III) oxyhydroxide, Mn(IV) oxide and sodium selenate but did not reduce sodium sulfate. They were also differentiated by several phenotypic characteristics. Based on the polyphasic taxonomic data, IMCC35001T and IMCC35002T were considered to represent each novel species in the genus Ferrimonas, for which the names Ferrimonas sediminicola sp. nov. (IMCC35001T=KACC 21161T=NBRC 113699T) and Ferrimonas aestuarii (IMCC35002T=KACC 21162T=NBRC 113700T) sp. nov. are proposed.

A Gram-reaction-positive, strictly aerobic, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, non-motile actinobacterium, designated C1-24T, was isolated from a soil sample collected inside a natural cave. The organism exhibited a rod-coccus developmental cycle during its growth phase. Results of 16S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic analysis showed that the novel strain belonged to the genus Rhodococcus and formed a distinct sublineage at the base of the radiation including a Rhodococcus enclensis-Rhodococcus kroppenstedtii-Rhodococcus corynebacterioides-Rhodococcus trifoli cluster. In the results of phylogenomic analysis, the novel strain was loosely associated to Rhodococcus corynebacterioides. The closest relatives were Rhodococcus qingshengii (98.01 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Rhodococcus degradans (98.01 %). The genome size was 5.66 Mbp and the DNA G+C content was 64.30 mol%. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, arabinose and galactose as the diagnostic diamino acid and sugars. MK-8(H2) was the predominant menaquinone. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, an unidentified glycolipid and three unidentified phospholipids. Mycolic acids were present. The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c, C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c and 10-methyl C18 : 0. Digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values revealed that the novel strain should be assigned to a different species. Based on the combined data obtained here, strain C1-24T (=KACC 19964T=DSM 109484T) represents a new species of the genus Rhodococcus, for which Rhodococcus cavernicola sp. nov. is proposed. Also, it is proposed that R. degradans is a later heterosynonym of R. qingshengii based on analyses of 16S rRNA gene and whole-genome sequences.

Two strains of Gram-stain-positive, strictly aerobic, motile, spore-forming, rod-shaped, moderately halotolerant bacteria, designated as HMF5848T and HME7618, were isolated from salt/brine and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic investigation. Growth of both yellow-coloured strains occurred in the presence of 1-9 % NaCl (w/v; optimum, 2-3 %), at 15-45 °C (optimum, 37 °C) and pH 6-9 (optimum, pH 7). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The only respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, four unidentified glycolipids, three unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified polar lipids. DNA G+C content was 37.4 mol%. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains HMF5848T and HME7618 clustered with Bacillus luteolus YIM 93174T. Strains HMF5848T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Bacillus humi LMG 22167T (96.1 %), Bacillus isabeliae CVS-8T (96.0 %) and Bacillus luteolus YIM 93174T (96.0 %). The values of in silico DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity between strains HMF5848T and B. humi DSM 16318T were 25.8 and 69.7 %, respectively. On the basis of phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic properties, strain HMF5848T represents a novel species, Bacillus salinus sp. nov. The type strain is HMF5848T (=KCTC 43010T=CECT 9695T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic, non-flagellated, chemoheterotrophic bacterium, designated IMCC14385T, was isolated from surface seawater of the East Sea, Republic of Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that IMCC14385T represented a member of the genus Halioglobus sharing 94.6-97.8 % similarities with species of the genus. Whole-genome sequencing of IMCC14385T revealed a genome size of 4.3 Mbp and DNA G+C content of 56.7 mol%. The genome of IMCC14385T shared an average nucleotide identity of 76.6 % and digital DNA-DNA hybridization value of 21.6 % with the genome of Halioglobus japonicus KCTC 23429T. The genome encoded the complete poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate biosynthesis pathway. The strain contained summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c) and C17 : 1 ω8c as the predominant cellular fatty acids as well as ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) as the respiratory quinone. The polar lipids detected in the strain were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, five unidentified phospholipids, an unidentified aminolipid, an unidentified aminophospholipid and four unidentified lipids. On the basis of taxonomic data obtained in this study, it is suggested that IMCC14385T represents a novel species of the genus Halioglobus, for which the name Halioglobus maricola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IMCC14385T (=KCTC 72520T=NBRC 114072T).

Microalgae and bacteria are known to be closely associated in diverse environments. To isolate dominant bacterial species associated with a green alga, Dunaliella tertiolecta, a photoreactor culture of the microalga was investigated using culture-based and culture-independent approaches. The bacterial community structure of the algal culture showed that the most abundant bacterial species under the culture conditions was related to the genus Winogradskyella. The closely related amplicon sequences, showing ≥ 99.5% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to one of the isolates, designated IMCC-33238T, constituted > 49% of the bacterial community and was therefore regarded as the most dominant species in the algal culture. Strain IMCC33238T was characterized by Gramstaining-negative and orange-colored rods. Phylogenetic analyses of the 16S rRNA genes as well as whole genome sequences revealed that strain IMCC33238T belonged to Winogradskyella and shared more than 97.2% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Winogradskyella species. The strain contained iso-C15:1 G, iso-C15:0, iso-C15:0 3-OH, and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω6c and/or C16:1ω7c) as major fatty acids and MK-6 as the predominant quinone. The polar lipids found in strain IMCC33238T were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, and three unidentified lipids. The genome of strain IMCC33238T was 3.37 Mbp in size with 33.9 mol% G + C content and proteorhodopsin. Many genes encoding folate and vitamin production are considered to play an important role in the bacteria-algae interaction. On the basis of phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics, strain IMCC33238T represents a novel species in the genus Winogradskyella, for which the name Winogradskyella algicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IMCC33238T (= KACC 21192T = NBRC 113704T).

A Gram-stain-negative, obligately aerobic, cream-coloured, non-gliding, motile with a single polar flagellum and rod-shaped bacterium, designated IMCC34151T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment of the Yellow Sea, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain IMCC34151T belonged to the genus Pelagibacterium of the family Hyphomicrobiaceae and shared 94.7-96.8 % sequence similarities to Pelagibacterium species. Whole-genome sequencing of strain IMCC34151T revealed a genome size of 3.2 Mbp and a DNA G+C content of 62.6 mol%. The strain contained summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c), C19 : 0cyclo ω8c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids and ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) as the major respiratory quinone. The polar lipids detected in the strain were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified glycolipids and 12 unidentified lipids. On the basis of its phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics, strain IMCC34151T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pelagibacterium, for which the name Pelagibacteriumsediminicola sp. nov. (type strain IMCC34151T =KACC 19595T=NBRC 113420T) is proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, obligately aerobic, chemoheterotrophic bacterium which is motile by means of a single polar flagellum, designated SAORIC-263T, was isolated from deep seawater of the Pacific Ocean. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and genomebased phylogeny revealed that strain SAORIC-263T belonged to the genus Sulfitobacter and shared 96.1-99.9% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Sulfitobacter species. Wholegenome sequencing of strain SAORIC-263T revealed a genome size of 3.9Mbp and DNA G+C content of 61.3 mol%. The SAORIC-263T genome shared an average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization of 79.1-88.5% and 18.9-35.0%, respectively, with other Sulfitobacter genomes. The SAORIC-263T genome contained the genes related to benzoate degradation, which are frequently found in deep-sea metagenome. The strain contained summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c), C18:1ω7c 11-methyl, and C16:0 as the predominant cellular fatty acids as well as ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) as the major respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids of the strain were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, and aminolipid. On the basis of taxonomic data obtained in this study, it is suggested that strain SAORIC-263T represents a novel species of the genus Sulfitobacter, for which the name Sulfitobacter profundi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SAORIC-263T (= KACC 21183T = NBRC 113428T).

Three strains of a Gram-stain negative bacterium were isolated from Lake Michigan water. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 1131 had sequence similarities to Bosea vaviloviae LMG 28367T, Bosea lathyri LMG 26379T, Bosea lupini LMG 26383T, Bosea eneae CCUG 43111T, Bosea vestrisii CCUG 43114T and Boseamassiliensis CCUG 43117T of 99.8, 99.1, 98.4, 98.4, 98.4 and 98.2 %, respectively. The average nucleotide identity value between strain 1131T and Bosea vaviloviae Vaf-18T was 93.4 % and the DNA relatedness was 38 %. The primary cellular fatty acids of strain 1131T were C16 : 1ω7c and C18 : 1ω7c. The primary polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. The major compound in the quinone system was ubiquinone Q-10 and in the polyamine pattern sym-homospermidine was predominant. Additional phenotypic characteristics included growth at 5-35 °C, pH values of pH 5.5-8.0, a salt tolerance range of 0.0-1.2 % (w/v), and production of an unknown water soluble brown pigment. After phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic analyses, this isolate was identified as a novel species for which the name Bosea psychrotolerans is proposed. The type strain is 1131T (NRRL B-65405=LMG 30034).

A non-motile, yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated IMCC34762T, was isolated from a freshwater sample collected from Lake Cheongpyeong in Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain IMCC-34762T formed a lineage within the genus Flavobacterium and was most closely related to F. pectinovorum DSM 6368T (98.3% sequence similarity), followed by F. piscis CCUG 60099T (98.3%), F. branchiicola 59B-3-09T (98.2%), and F. saccharophilum DSM 1811T (98.2%). The average nucleotide identity and the genome-to-genome distance between strain IMCC34762T and the closely related strains were 61-62% and 26-27%, respectively, indicating that IMCC34762T is a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium. The major fatty acids (> 5%) of strain IMCC34762T were summed feature 3 (C16:1ω6c and/or C16:1ω7c, 17.3%), iso-C15:0 (15.0%), iso-C15:0 G (9.0%), C15:0ω6c (7.4%), iso-C15:0 (7.4%), and iso-C16:0 (5.3%). The major respiratory quinone and polyamine were MK-6 and sym-homospermidine, respectively. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminophospholipid, and an unidentified lipid. The DNA G + C content of strain IMCC34762T was 34.4 mol%. Based on the taxonomic data presented in this study, strain IMCC-34762T represents a novel species within the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium aquariorum, sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IMCC34762T (= KACC 19725T = NBRC 113425T).

Although culture-independent studies have shown the presence of Verrucomicrobia in the deep sea, verrucomicrobial strains from deep-sea environments have been rarely cultured and characterized. Recently, Rubritalea profundi SAORIC-165T, a psychrophilic bacterium of the phylum Verrucomicrobia, was isolated from a depth of 2,000 m in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. In this study, the genome sequence of R. profundi SAORIC-165T, the first deep-sea verrucomicrobial isolate, is reported with description of the genome properties and comparison to surface-borne Rubritalea genomes. The draft genome consisted of four contigs with an entire size of 4,167,407 bp and G+C content of 47.5%. The SAORIC-165T genome was predicted to have 3,844 proteincoding genes and 45 non-coding RNA genes. The genome contained a repertoire of metabolic pathways, including the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway, pentose phosphate pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle, assimilatory sulfate reduction, and biosynthesis of nicotinate/nicotinamide, pantothenate/coenzyme A, folate, and lycopene. The comparative genomic analyses with two surface-derived Rubritalea genomes showed that the SAORIC-165T genome was enriched in genes involved in transposition of mobile elements, signal transduction, and carbohydrate metabolism, some of which might be related to bacterial enhancement of ecological fitness in the deep-sea environment. Amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA genes from the water column revealed that R. profundi-related phylotypes were relatively abundant at 2,000 m and preferred a particle-associated life style in the deep sea. These findings suggest that R. profundi represents a genetically unique and ecologically relevant verrucomicrobial group well adapted to the deep-sea environment.

A Gram-stain-negative, mucus-forming, motile by gliding, non-spore-forming and short rod-shaped bacterial strain designated R1-15T was isolated from soil and its taxonomic position was evaluated using a polyphasic approach. Strain R1-15T grew at 15-37°C (optimum, 30°C), at pH 6-7 (optimum, pH 6) and in the presence of 0-1% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0%) on 0.1X TSA. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, the novel strain was assigned to the family Chitinophagaceae of the phylum Bacteroidetes, and its closest related taxa were species of the genera Taibaiella (88.76-90.02% sequence similarity), Lacibacter (89.24-90.00%), Chitinophaga (88.61-89.76%), and Terrimonas (89.04%). Flexirubin- type pigments were produced. The only isoprenoid quinone was MK-7, and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. Based on whole genome comparisons between the strain R1-15T and the type strains of relatives, the orthologous average nucleotide identity values were 66.9-67.0%. The DNA G + C content of strain R1-15T was 43.8 mol%. The combination of phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data clearly supported separation of strain R1-15T from related taxa, and thus the name Mucibacter soli gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R1-15T (= KCTC 62274T = JCM 31190T).

Two Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, yellow-pigmented bacterial strains, designated IMCC34758T and IMCC34759T, were isolated from freshwater. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the two strains formed a distinct clade within the genus Flavobacterium and they shared 97.9 % sequence similarity. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values (dDDH) between the two strains were 85.5 and 30.2 %, respectively, indicating that they are separate species. The two strains showed ≤98.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, 80.6-81.3 % of ANI and 24.7-25.1 % of dDDH values to closely related species of the genus Flavobacterium, indicating that the two strains each represent novel Flavobacteriumspecies. The respiratory quinone detected in both strains was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The major polar lipids of the two strains were phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid, an unidentified aminophospholipid and an unidentified polar lipid. The DNA G+C contents of strains IMCC34758T and IMCC34759T were 34.0 and 34.1 mol%, respectively. The major fatty acids of the two strains were very similar to each other, comprising iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, anteiso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c). Phenotypic characteristics including enzyme activities and carbon source utilization differentiated the two strains from other Flavobacteriumspecies. Based on these results, strains IMCC34758T and IMCC34759T were considered to represent novel species in the genus Flavobacterium, for which the names Flavobacterium hydrophilum (IMCC34758T=KACC 19591T=NBRC 113423T) and Flavobacterium cheongpyeongense (IMCC34759T=KACC 19592T=NBRC 113424T) are proposed, respectively.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-flagellated, motile-by-gliding, orange-coloured bacterial strain, designated strain IMCC20180T, was isolated from seawater collected off the coast of the East Sea in the Republic of Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain IMCC20180T was most closely related to Winogradskyellaporiferorum UST030701-295T (95.7 % sequence similarity) and formed a robust phylogenetic clade with other Winogradskyella species, indicating that the strain was affiliated with the genus Winogradskyella. Growth of strain IMCC20180T was observed at 20-30 °C (optimum, 25 °C), pH 7.0-9.0 (pH 8.0) and with 1.0-3.5 % NaCl (3.0 %, w/v). The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-6. Major fatty acid constituents were iso-C15 : 1 G, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c), iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C16 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, four unknown aminolipids and five unknown lipids. The estimated genome size and the DNA G+C content of strain IMCC20180T were 3.1 Mb and 37.7 %, respectively. Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, physiological and chemotaxonomic characterization, strain IMCC20180T represented a novel species in the genus Winogradskyella, for which the name Winogradskyellaaurantiaca sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IMCC20180T (=KACC 18883T=KCTC 52240T=JCM 31383T).

A non-motile, pink-pigmented bacterial strain designated IMCC25679T, was isolated from freshwater Lake Chungju of Korea. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain IMCC25679T formed a lineage within the genus Pedobacter. The strain IMCC25679T was closely related to Pedobacter daechungensis Dae 13T (96.4% sequence similarity), Pedobacter rivuli HME8457T (95.3%) and Pedobacter lentus DS-40T (94.3%). The major fatty acids of IMCC- 25679T were iso-C15:0, iso-C16:0 and summed feature 3 (comprising C16:1ω6c and/or C16:1ω7c). The major respiratory quinone was MK-7. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), an unidentified sphingolipid (SL), an unidentified aminolipid (AL) and three unidentified polar lipids (PL). The DNA G + C content of IMCC25679T was 32.2 mol%. Based on the evidence presented in this study, the strain IMCC25679T represents a novel species within the genus Pedobacter, with the proposed name Pedobacter aquicola, sp. nov. The type strain is IMCC25679T (= KACC 19486T = NBRC113131T).

A Gram-stain-negative, short-rod, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile and red-pigmented bacterium, designated SAORIC-165T, was isolated from a deep-seawater sample collected from the Pacific Ocean. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain SAORIC-165T was most closely related to Rubritalea marina Pol012T (95.7 % sequence similarity) and formed a robust phylogenetic clade with other species of the genus Rubritalea in the phylum Verrucomicrobia. Optimal growth of strain SAORIC-165T was observed at 10 °C, pH 7.0 and in the presence of 2.0-3.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The DNA G+C content of strain SAORIC-165T was 50.7 mol% and MK-9 was the predominant isoprenoid quinone. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c), iso-C14 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and C14 : 0. The major polar lipids constituted phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and unidentified phospholipids and aminolipids. On the basis of the taxonomic data obtained in this study, it was concluded that strain SAORIC-165T represented a novel species of the genus Rubritalea, for which the name Rubritalea profundi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Rubritalea profundi is SAORIC-165T (=NBRC 110691T=KCTC 52460T).

A Gram-stain-negative, pink-coloured, non-motile and gamma radiation-resistant bacterium, designated strain IMCC1711T, was isolated from a freshwater sample collected from an artificial pond (Inkyong Pond). The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain IMCC1711T was most closely related to Deinococcus piscis 3axT (94.2 %) and formed a robust phylogenetic clade with other species of the genus Deinococcus. Optimal growth of strain MCC1711T was observed at 25 °C and pH 7.0 without NaCl. Strain IMCC1711T exhibited high resistance to gamma radiation. The DNA G+C content of strain IMCC1711T was 59.1 mol% and MK-8 was the predominant isoprenoid quinone. Major fatty acid constituents of the strain were C17 : 1ω8c, C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and C15 : 1ω6c. The major polar lipids constituted phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified phosphoglycolipid and two unidentified glycolipids. On the basis of taxonomic data obtained in this study, it was concluded that strain IMCC1711T represented a novel species of the genus Deinococcus, for which the name Deinococcus lacus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Deinococcus lacus is IMCC1711T (KCTC 52494T=KACC 18979T=NBRC 112440T).

A bacterial strain, designated IMCC25901T, was isolated from a freshwater lake, Soyang, in the Republic of Korea. The strain was Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile, orange-coloured and short rod-shaped. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain IMCC25901T was most closely related to Flavobacterium yonginense HMD1001T (97.0 %) and formed a robust phylogenetic clade with other species of the genus Flavobacterium. Growth of strain IMCC25901T was observed at 10-30 °C (optimum, 20 °C), pH 6-8 (optimum, pH 7) and 0-1.0 % NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The DNA G+C content of strain IMCC25901T was 34.2 mol%. The major fatty acid constituents of the strain were anteiso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C15 : 0. Cells of strain IMCC25901T contained phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified phospholipid, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The isoprenoid quinone detected in the strain was MK-6. On the basis of the taxonomic data obtained in this study, it was concluded that strain IMCC25901T represented a novel species in the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium lacicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Flavobacterium lacicola is IMCC25901T (=KCTC 52571T=NBRC 112883T).

Two Gram-staining-negative, orange coloured, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated strains IMCC26013T and IMCC26026T, were isolated from a freshwater sample collected from Lake Soyang in Korea. The 16S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic analyses showed that both strains belonged to the genus Flavobacterium and that strains IMCC26013T and IMCC26026T were most closely related to Flavobacterium psychrophilum (96.5 %) and Flavobacterium myungsuense (97.7 %), respectively. DNA G+C contents of strains IMCC26013T and IMCC26026T were 37.8 and 33.7 mol%, respectively. DNA-DNA relatedness between strain IMCC26026T and F. myungsuense HMD1033T was 56.4 %, showing a novel species status of strain IMCC26026T. Major fatty acid constituents (>10 %) of strain IMCC26013T were iso-C15 : 1 G, C15 : 1 ω6c, C17 : 1 ω6c and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c) and those of strain IMCC26026T were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3. Respiratory quinone detected in the two strains was MK-6. Both strains contained phosphatidylethanolamine as a major polar lipid. On the basis of these results, strains IMCC26013T and IMCC26026T were considered to represent novel species in the genus Flavobacterium, for which the names Flavobacterium chuncheonense (type strain IMCC26013T=KCTC 52573T=NBRC 112526T), and Flavobacterium luteum (type strain IMCC26026T=KCTC 52572T=NBRC 112527T) are proposed, respectively.

Two Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic, marine bacteria, designated HME9321T and HME9359T, were isolated from seawater and lagoon water samples in the Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of the two strains revealed that they belonged to the genus Lewinella within the family Saprospiraceae. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of strain HME9321T showed highest similarities with Lewinella aquimaris HDW-36T (95.2 %), Lewinella marina MKG-38T (94.7 %) and Lewinella xylanilytica 13-9-B8T (94.0 %). Strain HME9359T had highest sequence similarities with Lewinella agarilytica SST-19T (94.7 %), Lewinella persica T-3T (94.1 %) and Lewinella antarctica IMCC3223T (93.3 %). The predominant fatty acids of strain HME9321T were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 9 (comprising iso-C16 : 0 10-methyl and/or C17 : 1ω9c) while those of strain HME9359T were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and iso-C15 : 0. The major isoprenoid quinone of both strains was MK-7. Strain HME9321T contained the polar lipids, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid, one unidentified phospholipid and nine unidentified polar lipids, while strain HME9359T contained phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified phospholipid and nine unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C contents of strains HME9321T and HME9359T were 58.7 and 62.0 mol%, respectively. Based on the results of the phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic investigation, two novel species, Lewinella maritima sp. nov. and Lewinella lacunae sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains are HME9321T (=KACC 17619T=CECT 8419T) and HME9359T (=KCTC 42187T=CECT 8679T), respectively.

A novel bacterium, designated HME9613T, was isolated from seawater of the Yellow Sea in the Republic of Korea. Cells of strain HME9613T were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile by gliding and rod-shaped. Strain HME9613T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7 and in the presence of 3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain HME9613T formed a lineage within the genus Winogradskyella of the family Flavobacteriaceae, and showed highest sequence similarity to Winogardskyella exilis 022-2-26T (95.9 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain HME9613T and other Winogradskyella species ranged from 93.7 to 95.9 %. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and iso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The DNA G+C content of the strain HME9613T was 38.4 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain HME9613T represents a novel species within the genus Winogradskyella, for which the name Winogradskyella maritima sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HME9613T (=KCTC 42189T=CECT 8979T).
