RESUMO

We investigated the effect of prolonged rhBMP-2 treatment on telomerase activity, replicative capacity and senescence of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) during long term culture. We obtained intervertebral disc (IVD) tissues with grade III degeneration from four patients. NPCs were isolated and passaged serially in three groups: control group, low-dose rhBMP-2 group and high-dose rhBMP-2 group until the cells reached the end of their replicative lifespan. Cumulative population doubling level (CPDL), telomerase activity and senescence markers, senescence-associated ß-galactosidase (SA-ß-gal), p53, p21, and p16, were assessed. The replicative capacity of NPCs in the high-dose rhBMP-2 group was decreased significantly compared to the control and low-dose rhBMP-2 groups. Mean telomerase activity was significantly greater in the high-dose rhBMP-2 group compared to the control and low-dose rhBMP-2 groups. The percentage of SA-ß-gal-positive NPCs increased more rapidly in the high-dose rhBMP-2 group with passaging compared to the control and low-dose rhBMP-2 groups. The expression of p53, p21, and p16 in both low and high dose rhBMP-2 groups increased in all passages compared to the control group. We found that prolonged high-dose rhBMP-2 treatment increased telomerase activity of human NPCs, but decreased replicative capacity and lifespan in long term culture. We also found that excessive growth stimulation by prolonged high-dose rhBMP-2 treatment can promote NPCs senescence and result in growth arrest.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral biomarkers have been studied to predict treatment response of panic symptoms. We hypothesized that depressive disorder (MDD) vs. panic disorder (PD) would exhibit different peripheral biomarkers, and their correlation with severity of panic attacks (PA) would also differ. METHODS: Forty-one MDD patients, 52 PD patients, and 59 healthy controls were followed for 12 weeks. We measured peripheral biomarkers along with the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) at each visit-pre-treatment, 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks on a regular schedule. Peripheral biomarkers including serum cytokines, plasma and serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), leptin, adiponectin, and C-reactive protein (CRP) were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Patients with MDD and PD demonstrated significantly higher levels of pre-treatment IL-6 compared to controls, but no differences were seen in plasma and serum BDNF, leptin, adiponectin, and CRP. Pre-treatment leptin showed a significant clinical correlation with reduction of panic symptoms in MDD patients at visit 5 (p=0.011), whereas pre-treatment IL-6 showed a negative correlation with panic symptom reduction in PD patients (p=0.022). An improvement in three panic-related items was observed to be positively correlated with pre-treatment leptin in MDD patients: distress during PA, anticipatory anxiety, and occupational interference. CONCLUSION: Higher pre-treatment leptin was associated with better response to treatment regarding panic symptoms in patients with MDD, while higher IL-6 was associated with worse response regarding panic symptoms in PD patients. Different predictive peripheral biomarkers observed in MDD and PD suggest the need for establishing individualized predictive biomarkers, even in cases of similar symptoms observed in different disorders.

RESUMO

With vigorous researches related to novel treatment in psychiatric field, paradigm shift is emerging with its design and assessment. Comprehension of the psychiatric phenomenon expanded beyond disease model, with dimensional approach. Assessment of patients' clinical state includes subjective reports related to problematic symptoms, functional change, and quality of life. They also include objective findings collected from mobile e-wearable monitoring system and advanced neuroimaging modalities. Novel treatment protocols are not just limited to pharmacology itself or psychotherapy itself, but the approach is integrated with stratification; pharmacological treatment enhanced by cognitive behavioral management and psychotherapeutic intervention has been emerged and studied for its impact. Numerous studies were conducted to understand placebo response and to differentiate this phenomenon with novel treatments. Trials to draw good adherence to research protocol with good compliance to treatment in real are strengthened by integrated approach, so-called psychopharmacology. With these paradigm shifts observed from recent researches, it is promising for great advance in quality of life and our mental health.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether preemptive extensive rotator interval (RI) release during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) would reduce postoperative stiffness. METHODS: From July 2015 to September 2016, a total of 80 patients who were scheduled for ARCR were enrolled and randomly allocated into 2 groups: the preemptive extensive RI release group (group 1, n=40) and the RI nonrelease group (group 2, n=40). The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scale, Constant score, Korean Shoulder Scale (KSS), visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, and range of motion (ROM) were evaluated before surgery; 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery; and at last follow-up. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed at postoperative 12 months. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 26.5 months. The functional and pain scores in both groups were significantly improved at the last follow-up (P < .05). Group 1 showed a significantly higher sum of ROM with a difference of 27° and 1.6 vertebral level of internal rotation compared to group 2 at postoperative 3 months (P < .05). Constant score and KSS were significantly higher in group 1 than in group 2 at this time point (P < .05). Functional scores and ROM were not significantly different between 2 groups at postoperative 6 or 12 months or at the last follow-up (P > .05). The retear rate and pathologic change of the long head of the biceps tendon during follow-up were not significantly different between the 2 groups (P > .05). CONCLUSION: Arthroscopic preemptive extensive RI release can reduce early postoperative shoulder stiffness after ARCR but does not significantly change the overall clinical outcome after surgery.

RESUMO

Background: There is concern that overcompetition and illegal activities such as patient solicitation by some dialysis units may threaten patients' health in Korea. Therefore, we investigated the effect of nephrologists' patient-soliciting activity on hemodialysis practices and patients' survival using the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database. Methods: We selected 19 soliciting hemodialysis facilities and matched them with 19 non-soliciting facilities located nearby to eliminate location bias. Soliciting behavior was defined as the reduction of medical fees or providing money to attract dialysis patients. Results: A total of 2,231 incident dialysis patients were included and followed for a median of 37.2 months. Soliciting facilities had a lower percentage of nephrologists, a higher average daily number of hemodialysis patients per physician, and a higher number of hemodialysis patients per nurse compared with non-soliciting facilities. Survival analysis showed that the crude mortality was significantly higher in patients treated in soliciting facilities than in those treated in non-soliciting facilities, even after adjustment for the effects of many other independently predictive covariates. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that in Korea, the overall mortality rate in incident dialysis patients was higher in those attending soliciting facilities than in those attending non-soliciting facilities.

RESUMO

Our study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics and psychotropic prescription patterns of a history of suicide attempts in South Koreans with bipolar disorder (BD), by using only Korean data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Pattern for Bipolar disorder. The patterns of clinical characteristics and psychotropic drug use were compared among 53 patients with a history of suicide attempts and 297 without this history; the potential effects of confounding variables were adjusted with binary logistic analyses for discrete variables and analyses of covariance for continuous variables. After adjusting the effects of age, sex, duration of illness, and enrollment as an outpatient, patients with a history of suicide attempts were characterized by a significantly more prevalent depressive episode, lower prevalent remission state, lower levels of hemoglobin, and more use of antidepressants, anxiolytics, and hypnotics compared to those without lifetime suicide attempt. The inability to plan goal-directed behavior may be an intervening factor in the relationship between suicide attempts and depression in BD. Relatively low hemoglobin levels can be associated with manic episodes in patients with a history of suicide attempts and the use of antidepressants, anxiolytics, or hypnotics can be associated with suicide attempts in BD patients.

RESUMO

Neuroimaging research increasingly suggests there are biological features related to suicidal risk, including brain morphometric features, leading to an elaborate suicide risk assessment. However, few studies have focused on the severity of suicidal ideation and its association with subcortical anatomy in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Here, we mainly investigated whether specific structural differences were present in MDD patients with and without suicidal ideation; and supplemented comparison with and without suicidal attempt. We hypothesized that structures associated with suicidal ideation would be derived from a combination of depression and impulsivity. Local atrophy of subcortical structures in 48 patients with MDD (24 with suicidal ideation and 24 without) and 25 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were compared using a surface-based shape analysis method. There was no difference in brain volume between MDD patients with or without suicidal ideations; or MDD patients with or without suicidal attempt. However, the atrophy level in the left pallidum showed a positive correlation with severity of suicidal risk in MDD patients with suicidal ideation. Local atrophy of the left hippocampus, right caudate, and right pallidum had a positive correlation with total impulsivity. These findings possibly suggest that vulnerability to suicidal attempt can be derived from suicidal ideation combined with depression and impulsivity, related to reduced motivational control.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Due to limited efficacy of medications, non-pharmacological interventions (NPI) are frequently co-administered to people with moderate to severe dementia (PWMSD). This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of NPI on activities of daily living (ADL), behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), and cognition and quality of life (QoL) of PWMSD. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in the following databases: Cochrane CENTRAL, EMBASE, Medline, CIHNAL, PsycINFO, KoreaMED, KMbase, and KISS. We conducted a meta-analysis on randomized controlled trials and used the generic inverse variance method with a fixed-effects model to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD). The protocol had been registered (CRD42017058020). RESULTS: Ten randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria of the current meta-analysis. NPI were effective in improving ADL [SMD=0.28, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.11-0.45] and reducing depression (SMD=-0.44, 95% CI=-0.70- -0.19). However, NPI were not effective in reducing agitation, anxiety, or overall, or improving cognitive function. In a subgroup analysis, music therapy was effective in reducing overall BPSD (SMD=-0.52, 95% CI=-0.90- -0.13). CONCLUSION: Albeit the number of studies was limited, NPI improved ADL and depression in PWMSD.

RESUMO

Based on Korean data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Pattern for Bipolar Disorder, this study tried to present prescription patterns in biopolar disorder (BD) and its associated clinical features. Based on the information obtained from the study with structured questions, the tendency of prescription pattern was studied and analyzed. Polypharmacy was predominant, including simple polypharmacy in 51.1% and complex polypharmacy in 34.2% of patients. Subjects associated with simple or complex polypharmacy were significantly younger, had higher inpatient settings, a larger portion of onset with manic episode, a shorter duration of untreated illness, a shorter duration of current episode, were more overweight, used less antidepressants and used more anxiolytics. These findings can suggest higher polypharmacy rate in more severe BD and highlight the necessity of monitoring the weight of subjects with polypharmacy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress symptoms are associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders and medical illness. Although psychological distress is influenced by environmental factors, such as socioeconomic status, lifetime events, or interpersonal relationships, substantial interindividual variation also exists. However, heritability and genetic determinants of distress are poorly understood. METHODS: In the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study sample (n = 12,680), we estimated the heritability of individual psychological distress symptoms using the GCTA-REML method and carried out a genome-wide association study of individual psychological distress symptoms showing significant heritability. RESULTS: We found three psychological distress items showing significant heritability: subjective well-being (9%), fatigue and appetite (11%), and enjoying daily life (8%). Additionally, we found genome-wide significant associations of rs6735649 located between STEAP3 and C1QL2 on chromosome 2 with subjective well-being (P = 1.32 × 10-8, odds ratio [OR] = 1.18, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12-1.25) and rs35543418 located between SYT16 and KCNH5 on chromosome 14 with enjoying daily life (P = 1.33 × 10-8, OR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.35-1.86). LIMITATIONS: The lack of replication in independent cohorts and longitudinal assessment of distress may limit generalizability. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that distress symptoms are partly heritable. Further analysis in larger cohorts investigating gene-environment interactions is required to identify genetic variants that explain the proportion of variation in distress.

RESUMO

There have been various studies about the acellular nerve allograft (ANA) as the alternative of autologous nerve graft in the treatment of peripheral nerve defects. As well as the decellularization process methods of ANA, the various enhancement methods of regeneration of the grafted ANA were investigated. The chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) inhibit the action of laminin which is important for nerve regeneration in the extracellular matrix of nerve. Chondroitinase ABC (ChABC) has been reported that it enhances the nerve regeneration by degradation of CSPGs. The present study compared the regeneration of ANA between the processed without ChABC group and the processed with ChABC group in a rat sciatic nerve 15 mm gap model. At 12 weeks postoperatively, there was not a significant difference in the histomorphometric analysis. In the functional analysis, there were no significant differences in maximum isometric tetanic force, wet muscle weight of tibialis anterior. The processed without ChABC group had better result in ankle contracture angle significantly. In conclusion, there were no significant differences in the regeneration of ANA between the processed without ChABC group and the processed with ChABC group.

RESUMO

As the performance of photoanodes for solar water splitting steadily improves, the extension of the absorption wavelength in the photoanodes is highly necessary to substantially improve the water splitting. We use a luminescent back reflector (LBR) capable of photon upconversion (UC) to improve the light harvesting capabilities of Mo:BiVO4 photoelectrodes. The LBR is prepared by dispersing the organic dye pair meso-tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphine palladium and perylene capable of triplet-triplet annhilation-based UC in a polymer film. The LBR converts the wavelengths of 600-650 nm corresponding to the sub-band gap of Mo:BiVO4 and the wavelengths of 350-450 nm that are not sufficiently absorbed in Mo:BiVO4 to a wavelength that can be absorbed by a Mo:BiVO4 photoelectrode. The LBR improves the water splitting reaction of Mo:BiVO4 photoelectrodes by 17 %, and consequently, the Mo:BiVO4 /LBR exhibits a photocurrent density of 5.25 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. The Mo:BiVO4 /LBR exhibits hydrogen/oxygen evolution corresponding to the increased photocurrent density and long-term operational stability for the water splitting reaction.

RESUMO

Prion disease has displayed large infection host ranges among several species; however, dogs have not been reported to be infected and are considered prion disease-resistant animals. Case-controlled studies in several species, including humans and cattle, indicated a potent association of prion protein gene (PRNP) polymorphisms in the progression of prion disease. Thus, because of the proximal location and similar structure of the PRNP gene among the prion gene family, the prion-like protein gene (PRND) was noted as a novel candidate gene that contributes to prion disease susceptibility. Several case-controlled studies have confirmed the relationship of the PRND gene with prion disease vulnerability, and strong genetic linkage disequilibrium blocks were identified in prion-susceptible species between the PRNP and PRND genes. However, to date, polymorphisms of the dog PRND gene have not been reported, and the genetic linkage between the PRNP and PRND genes has not been examined thus far. Here, we first investigated dog PRND polymorphisms in 207 dog DNA samples using direct DNA sequencing. A total of four novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including one nonsynonymous SNP (c.149G>A, R50H), were identified in this study. We also found two major haplotypes among the four novel SNPs. In addition, we compared the genotype and allele frequencies of the c.149G>A (R50H) SNP and found significantly different distributions among eight dog breeds. Furthermore, we annotated the c.149G>A (R50H) SNP of the dog PRND gene using in silico tools, PolyPhen-2, PROVEAN, and PANTHER. Finally, we examined linkage disequilibrium between the PRNP and PRND genes in dogs. Interestingly, we did not find a strong genetic linkage between these two genes. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first genetic study of the PRND gene in a prion disease-resistant animal, a dog.

RESUMO

Purpose: High fibular osteotomy (HFO) is a simple surgical technique to reduce pain and improve function in patients with osteoarthritis via fibular osteotomy. We report short-term results of HFO and mesenchymal cell induced chondrogenesis (MCIC) for the treatment of osteoarthritis of knee with varus deformity. Patients and methods: 45 symptomatic patients with 14 males and 31 females age ranging from 40 to 75 years were treated by HFO and MCIC. Main lesions involved medial compartment of knee and lateral compartment with normal to mild lesions of lateral meniscus and articular cartilage, amenable to treatment via partial meniscectomy or observation. Results: Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome score and Lysholm showed a statistically significant increase and VAS, varus angle in X-ray showed a statistically significant decrease. A statistically significant difference between preoperative and postoperative scores was detected in male and female patients without any sexual differences. Conclusion: High fibular osteotomy and mesenchymal cell induced chondrogenesis can be considered as a good treatment option for medial compartment osteoarthritis of knee with varus deformity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Heart Rate Variability (HRV) parameters have been used to evaluate the autonomic nervous system. We hypothesized that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD) showed different HRV profiles compared to healthy controls. We also hypothesized that we could predict the responder groups in the MDD and PD patients, using differences in HRV indices between the stress and rest phases. METHODS: 28 MDD patients and 29 PD patients were followed for 12 weeks, and we also followed 39 healthy control subjects. We measured HRV parameters at the rest, stress, and recovery phases. RESULTS: Patients with MDD and PD demonstrated lower pNN50 than controls during the stress (F = 7.49, p = 0.001), and recovery phases (F = 9.43, p = 0.0001). Patients with MDD and PD also showed higher LF/HF ratio than controls during the stress phase (F = 6.15, p = 0.002). Responders in the PD group presented a lower level of LF/HF ratio during the stress phase compared to non-responders (F = 10.14, p = 0.002), while responders in the MDD group showed a lower level of heart rate during all three phases, compared to non-responders. Additionally, we could predict treatment response in patients with MDD using ΔLF/HF ratio (OR: 1.33, 95% CI = 1.07-1.65, p = 0.011) and ΔpNN50 (OR: 1.49, 95% CI 1.09-1.77, p = 0.014). CONCLUSION: The changes of HRV parameters of pNN50 and LF/HF ratio between the stress and recovery phase may be clinical markers of predictors of treatment responsiveness in MDD and PD patients.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: There have been no prior case series of isolated iliac wing fracture (IIWF) due to low-energy trauma in geriatric patients in the literature. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of IIWF in geriatric patients, and to present a case series of IIWF in geriatric patients who underwent our minimally invasive screw fixation technique named 'iliac pillar screw fixation'. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed six geriatric patients over 65  years old who had isolated iliac wing fracture treated with minimally invasive screw fixation technique between January 2006 and April 2016. RESULTS: Six geriatric patients received iliac pillar screw fixation for acute IIWFs. The incidence of IIWFs was approximately 3.5% of geriatric patients with any pelvic bone fractures. The main fracture line exists in common; it extends from a point between the anterosuperior iliac spine and the anteroinferior iliac spine to a point located at the dorsal 1/3 of the iliac crest whether fracture was comminuted or not. Regarding the Koval walking ability, patients who underwent iliac pillar screw fixation technique tended to regain their pre-injury walking including one patient in a previously bedridden state. The visual analog scale score for pain at the last follow-up was quite satisfactory. Union was achieved in all patients at the last follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Geriatric patients can have a form of IIWF caused by low-energy trauma that is a type of fragility fracture of the pelvis. Because subsequent deterioration of their walking status followed by a long period of non-weight bearing in geriatric patients could be as threatening as the fracture itself, the treatment paradigm for IIWF due to low-energy trauma in geriatric patients should differ from that due to high-energy trauma in most patients. In these types of fractures, minimally invasive surgical management that includes iliac pillar screw fixation can lead to good outcomes.

RESUMO

A photoanode capable of high-efficiency water oxidation at low bias potential is essential for its practical application for photocathode-coupled tandem systems. To address this issue, a photoanode with low turn-on voltage for water oxidation and high charge separation efficiency at low bias potential is essential. In this study, we demonstrate the photoanode of the BiVO4/ZnO three-dimensional (3D) bicontinuous (BC) structure. ZnO has a relatively cathodic flat-band potential, which leads to low turn-on potential; the BiVO4/ZnO 3D BC photoanode shows an onset potential of 0.09 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode ( VRHE). Moreover, we achieve remarkably high charge separation efficiency at low bias potential (78% at 0.6 VRHE); this is attributed to the application of thin-film BiVO4 shells by high light-scattering properties of the 3D BC structure. As a result, the BiVO4/ZnO 3D BC photoanode generates a high water oxidation photocurrent of up to 3.4 ± 0.2 mA cm-2 (with CoPi catalyst coating). This photocurrent value is reproducible, and the photocurrent-to-O2 conversion efficiency is over 90%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest value among the values of the photocurrent at 0.6 VRHE in previous BiVO4-based heterojunction photoanodes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical and radiographic outcomes and complications after vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP) for osteoporotic vertebral fractures with severe collapse. METHODS: Patients >65 years old with single osteoporotic vertebral fracture (T10-L2) with severe collapse (>40%) were prospectively enrolled and allocated to either KP or VP. Visual analog scale and Oswestry Disability Index were used for clinical assessment. Vertebral height loss (HL) and segmental kyphotic angle were measured radiographically at preoperative; postoperative; and 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month postoperative time points. Procedure-related and postoperative complications were recorded. RESULTS: Forty-six patients (27 with VP, 19 with KP) were enrolled. Visual analog scale and Oswestry Disability Index scores were similar at all time points in the 2 groups. Complication rates were also similar. HL and kyphotic angle were restored significantly in both groups. KP showed a better result in HL (KP group HL 20.5% ± 5.6% vs. VP group HL 29.8% ± 4.6%, P < 0.001). Progressive vertebral HL was observed, and patients with KP showed a greater collapse in height. At 1-year follow-up, there was no significant difference in vertebral height (KP group HL 29.8% ± 6.3% vs. VP group HL 33.0% ± 5.2%, P = 0.075). CONCLUSIONS: KP and VP showed similar improvements in pain and disability during treatment for osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Although vertebral height and segmental kyphotic angle were restored significantly in both groups, progressive vertebral HL was inevitable, especially after KP. This likely resulted from the difference of bone-cement interface as a consequence of balloon tamping in KP. Surgeons must consider the respective features of vertebral augmentations.

RESUMO

Eating disorders comorbid with depression are an established risk factor for suicide. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of binge eating (BE) symptoms on suicidality and related clinical characteristics in major depressive disorder (MDD). A total of 817 community participants with MDD were included. We compared two groups (with and without lifetime BE symptoms). The MDD with BE group was subdivided into a frequent BE (FBE) subgroup (BE symptoms greater than twice weekly) and any BE (ABE) subgroup (BE symptoms greater than twice weekly). The MDD with BE group comprised 142 (17.38%) patients. The FBE and ABE subgroups comprised 75 (9.18%) and 67 (8.20%) patients, respectively. Comorbid alcohol use disorder, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and history of suicide attempt were significantly more frequent in the MDD with BE group than MDD without BE group. Sexual trauma was also reported more frequently in MDD with BE group. No significant differences were observed between the ABE and FBE subgroups. Multivariate logistic regression revealed an association of suicide attempt with BE symptoms and sexual trauma. Structural equation modeling showed that sexual trauma increased BE (ß = 0.337, P <0.001) together with alcohol use (ß = 0.185, P <0.001) and anxiety (ß = 0.299, p<0.001), which in turn increased suicide attempt (ß = 0.087, p = 0.011). BE symptoms were associated with suicide attempt in MDD after adjusting for other factors associated with suicidality. BE symptoms also moderated an association between suicide attempt and sexual trauma.

RESUMO

Tin monoxide (SnO) anodes are promising candidates for use in sodium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities and stable cycle performance. In previous reports, electrodes with excellent performance have been prepared by using nano-sized SnO particles. However, the synthesis of nano-sized SnO particles is complex, time-consuming, and expensive. In this paper, an anode of micron-sized SnO is prepared by using commercial micron-sized SnO particles. The electrode exhibits a reversible capacity of 450 mAh g-1 in the 1st cycle at a current rate of 100 mA g-1. We used a tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME)-based electrolyte, which is well known for its superior electrochemical performance in sodium-ion batteries. The mechanism of operation of the anode containing micron-sized SnO particles has been confirmed by a detailed study using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). During initial discharge, the SnO changed to Sn and sodium oxide, and the surface of the electrode became covered with a film. The electrode composed of micron-sized SnO is a potential candidate for use in sodium-ion batteries.
