RESUMO

Background: Executive and social functioning difficulty is well established in pediatric brain tumor survivors. Few studies have compared posterior fossa (PF) tumor survivors in comparison to their peers. The relationship between attention, processing speed, working memory, fatigue, and executive and social functioning was investigated to better understand the factors that impact executive and social functioning in PF tumor populations. Methods: Sixteen medulloblastomas, 9 low-grade astrocytomas (LGAs), and 17 healthy controls recruited from 4 sites completed measures of working memory and processing speed, and self-reported fatigue. One parent completed questionnaires on executive and social functioning. Results: There were no significant differences among all 3 groups on parent-reported executive and social functioning; of note, parents of LGA survivors expressed greater concerns regarding behavioral and cognitive regulation than did parents of medulloblastoma survivors and healthy controls. Parent-reported attention was related to parent-reported emotion, behavior, and cognitive regulation. Worse self-reported fatigue was associated with greater emotional dysregulation for the 2 PF tumor groups. Conclusions: Parents of PF tumor survivors described their children as performing similarly to their peers in most facets of executive and social functioning. While LGA survivors are traditionally thought to have more favorable outcomes, our finding of parent-reported executive functioning concerns to be worse for this group highlights the importance of long-term follow-up for all PF tumor survivors. Additionally, significant effects of attention on aspects of executive functioning in PF tumor survivors may inform current clinical practice and the future development of more effective interventions.

RESUMO

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constitute a class of crystalline porous materials employed in storage and energy conversion applications. MOFs possess characteristics that render them ideal in the preparation of electrocatalysts, and exhibit excellent performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, H-Ni/NiO/C catalysts were synthesized from a Ni-based MOF hollow structure via a two-step process involving carbonization and oxidation. Interestingly, the performance of the H-Ni/NiO/C catalyst was superior to those of H-Ni/C, H-NiO/C, and NH-Ni/NiO/C catalysts for the HER. Notably, H-Ni/NiO/C exhibited the best electrocatalytic activity for the HER, with a low overpotential of 87 mV for 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 91.7 mV dec-1. The high performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of the metal/metal oxide and hollow architecture, which is favorable for breaking the H-OH bond, forming hydrogen atoms, and enabling charge transport. These results indicate that the employed approach is promising for fabricating cost-effective catalysts for hydrogen production in alkaline media.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We investigated the impact of comorbidity burden on troponin elevation, with separate consideration of neurological conditions, in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). METHODS: This prospective, observational cohort study consecutively enrolled patients with AIS for 2 years. Serum cardiac troponin I was repeatedly measured, and disease-related biomarkers were collected for diagnosis of preassigned comorbidities, including atrial fibrillation (AF), ischemic heart disease (IHD), myocardial hypertrophy (MH), heart failure (HF), renal insufficiency (RI), and active cancer. The severity of neurological deficits and insular cortical ischemic lesions were assessed as neurological conditions. Adjusted associations between these factors and troponin elevation were determined using a multivariate ordinal logistic regression model and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Cox proportional hazards model was used to determine the prognostic significance of comorbidity beyond neurological conditions. RESULTS: Among 1,092 patients (66.5±12.4 years, 63.3% male), 145 (13.3%) and 335 (30.7%) had elevated (≥0.040 ng/mL) and minimally-elevated (0.040-0.010 ng/mL) troponin, respectively. In the adjusted analysis, AF, MH, HF, RI, active cancer, and neurological deficits were associated with troponin elevation. The multivariate model with six comorbidities and two neurological conditions exhibited an AUC of 0.729 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.698-0.759). In Cox regression, AF, IHD, and HF were associated with adverse cardio-cerebrovascular events, whereas HF and active cancer were associated with mortality. CONCLUSION: Troponin elevation in patients with AIS can be explained by the burden of comorbidities in combination with neurological status, which explains the prognostic significance of troponin assay.

RESUMO

Real-time breath isoprene sensing provides noninvasive methods for monitoring human metabolism and early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Nonetheless, the stable alkene structure and high humidity of the breath hinder sensitive and selective isoprene detection. In this work, we derived well-defined Co3O4@polyoxometalate yolk-shell structures using a metal-organic framework template. The inner space, including highly catalytic Co3O4 yolks surrounded by a semipermeable polyoxometalate shell, enables stable isoprene to be reformed to reactive intermediate species by increasing the gas residence time and the reaction with the inner catalyst. This sensor exhibited selective isoprene detection with an extremely high chemiresistive response (180.6) and low detection limit (0.58 ppb). The high sensing performance can be attributed to electronic sensitization and catalytic promotion effects. In addition, the reforming reaction of isoprene is further confirmed by the proton transfer reaction-quadrupole mass spectrometry analysis. The practical feasibility of this sensor in smart healthcare applications is exhibited by monitoring muscle activity during the workout.

RESUMO

A carbon-fiber (Cf) doped TiB2-SiC composite was prepared and investigated to determine its densification behavior, micro/nanostructural properties, and mechanical characteristics. TiB2-25 vol% SiC-2 wt% Cf was prepared at 40 MPa and 1800 °C for 7 min using the pulsed electric-current sintering technique, and a relative density of 98.5% was realized. The as-sintered composite was characterized using advanced techniques, e.g., X-ray diffractometry, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, field-emission electron probe micro-analysis, and nanoindentation. The Cf additive could remove the surface oxide layers from the TiB2 and SiC domains, thus transforming them into TiB2 and SiC. According to micro/nanostructural studies, Cf could not retain its initial structure and was eventually converted into graphite nanosheets. In addition, the prepared composite was examined using the nanoindentation technique, and the following results were obtained for the calculated hardness, elastic modulus, and stiffness values: TiB2 > SiC > TiB2/SiC interface.

RESUMO

Environmental problems such as global warming are one of the most prominent global challenges. Researchers are investigating various methods for decreasing CO2 emissions. The CO2 reduction reaction via electrochemical, photochemical, and photoelectrochemical processes has been a popular research topic because the energy it requires can be sourced from renewable sources. The CO2 reduction reaction converts stable CO2 molecules into useful products such as CO, CH4 , C2 H4 , and C2 H5 OH. To obtain economic benefits from these products, it is important to convert them into hydrocarbons above C2 . Numerous investigations have demonstrated the uniqueness of the CC coupling reaction of Cu-based catalysts for the conversion of CO2 into useful hydrocarbons above C2 for electrocatalysis. Herein, the principle of semiconductors for photocatalysis is briefly introduced, followed by a description of the obstacles for C2+ production. This review presents an overview of the mechanism of hydrocarbon formation above C2 , along with advances in the improvement, direction, and comprehension of the CO2 reduction reaction via electrochemical, photochemical, and photoelectrochemical processes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Neurocognitive impairment is frequently observed among survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) within the domains of attention, working memory, processing speed, executive functioning, and learning and memory. However, few studies have characterized the trajectory of treatment-induced changes in neurocognitive function beginning in the first months of treatment, to test whether early changes predict impairment among survivors. If correct, we hypothesize that those children who are most susceptible to early impairment would be ideal subjects for clinical trials testing interventions designed to protect against treatment-related neurocognitive decline. METHODS: In this pilot study, we prospectively assessed neurocognitive functioning (attention, working memory, executive function, visual learning, and processing speed), using the Cogstate computerized battery at six time points during the 2 years of chemotherapy treatment and 1-year post-treatment (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute ALL Consortium protocol 11-001; NCT01574274). RESULTS: Forty-three patients with ALL consented to serial neurocognitive testing. Of the 31 participants who remained on study through the final time point, 1 year after completion of chemotherapy, 28 (90%) completed at least five of six planned Cogstate testing time points. Performance and completion checks indicated a high tolerability (≥ 88%) for all subtests. One year after completion of treatment, 10 of 29 patients (34%) exhibited neurocognitive function more than 2 standard deviations below age-matched norms on one or more Cogstate subtests. CONCLUSIONS: Serial collection of neurocognitive data (within a month of diagnosis with ALL, during therapy, and 1-year post-treatment) is feasible and can be informative for evaluating treatment-related neurocognitive impairment.

RESUMO

Childhood abuse is associated with brain structural alterations; however, few studies have investigated the association between specific types of childhood abuse and cortical volume in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). We aimed to investigate the association between specific types of childhood abuse and gray matter volumes in patients with MDD. Seventy-five participants with MDD and 97 healthy controls (HCs) aged 19-64 years were included. Cortical gray matter volumes were compared between MDD and HC groups, and also compared according to exposure to each type of specific childhood abuse. Emotional, sexual, and physical childhood abuse were assessed using the 28-item Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Patients with MDD showed a significantly decreased gray matter volume in the right anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG). Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) was associated with significantly decreased gray matter volume in the right middle occipital gyrus (MOG). In the post-hoc comparison of volumes of the right ACG and MOG, MDD patients with CSA had significantly smaller volumes in the right MOG than did MDD patients without CSA or HCs. The right MOG volume decrease could be a neuroimaging marker associated with CSA and morphological changes in the brain may be involved in the pathophysiology of MDD.

RESUMO

Formulation of heterojunction with remarkable high efficiency by utilizing solar light is promising to synchronously overcome energy and environmental crises. In this concern, hexagonal-borocarbonitride (h-BCN) based Z-schemes have proved potential candidates due to their spatially separated oxidation and reduction sites, robust light-harvesting ability, high charge pair migration and separation, and strong redox ability. H-BCN has emerged as a hotspot in the research field as a metal-free photocatalyst with a tunable bandgap range of 0-5.5 eV. The BCN photocatalyst displayed synergistic benefits of both graphene and boron nitride. Herein, the review demonstrates the current state-of-the-art in the Z-scheme photocatalytic application with a special emphasis on the predominant features of their photoactivity. Initially, fundamental aspects and various synthesis techniques are discussed, including thermal polymerization, template-assisted, and template-free methods. Afterward, the reaction mechanism of direct Z-scheme photocatalysts and indirect Z-scheme (all-solid-state) are highlighted. Moreover, the emerging Step-scheme (S-scheme) systems are briefly deliberated to understand the charge transfer pathway mechanism with an induced internal electric field. This review critically aims to comprehensively summarize the photo-redox applications of various h-BCN-based heterojunction photocatalysts including CO2 photoreduction, H2 evolution, and pollutants degradation. Finally, some challenges and future direction of h-BCN-based Z-scheme photocatalyst in environmental remediation are also proposed.

RESUMO

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are ubiquitous multipotent cells that exhibit significant therapeutic potentials in a variety of disorders. Nevertheless, their clinical efficacy is limited owing to poor survival, low rate of engraftment, and impaired potency upon transplantation. Spheroidal three-dimensional (3D) culture of MSCs (MSC3D) has been proven to better preserve their in vivo functional properties. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the improvement in MSC function by spheroid formation are not clearly understood. NLRP3 inflammasomes, a key component of the innate immune system, have recently been shown to play a role in cell fate decision of MSCs. The present study examined the role of NLRP3 inflammasomes in the survival and potency of MSC spheroids. We found that MSC3D led to decreased activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes through alleviation of ER stress in an autophagy-dependent manner. Importantly, downregulation of NLRP3 inflammasomes signaling critically contributes to the enhanced survival rate in MSC3D through modulation of pyroptosis and apoptosis. The critical role of NLRP3 inflammasome suppression in the enhanced therapeutic efficacy of MSC spheroids was further confirmed in an in vivo mouse model of DSS-induced colitis. These findings suggest that 3D culture confers survival and functional advantages to MSCs by suppressing NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

RESUMO

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to diverse value-added chemicals is a unique, environmentally friendly approach for curbing greenhouse gas emissions while addressing sluggish catalytic activity and low Faradaic efficiency (FE) of electrocatalysts. Here, zeolite-imidazolate-frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) containing various transition metal ions-Ni, Fe, and Cu-at varying concentrations upon doping were fabricated for the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) to CO without further processing. Atom coordination environments and theoretical electrocatalytic performance were scrutinized via X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Upon optimized Cu doping on ZIF-8, Cu0.5 Zn0.5 /ZIF-8 achieved a high partial current density of 11.57 mA cm-2 and maximum FE for CO of 88.5% at -1.0 V (versus RHE) with a stable catalytic activity over 6 h. Furthermore, the electron-rich sp2 C atom facilitated COOH* promotion after Cu doping of ZIF-8, leading to a local effect between the Zn-N4 and Cu-N4 moieties. Additionally, advanced CO2 RR pathway was illustrated from various perspectives, including the pre-H-covered state under the CO2 RR. Our findings expand the pool of efficient MOF-based CO2 RR catalysts, deeming them viable alternatives to conventional catalysts. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

RESUMO

Drilling mud is a multi-phase fluid that is used in the petroleum drilling process. Bentonite is the most important constituent of drilling mud; it endows the drilling mud with its rheological behaviors, such as viscosity, yield stress, and shear thinning. The process of manufacturing microscale bentonite at the nanoscale level is very promising for commercializing nano-based drilling mud. In contrast to the conventional method using the impeller, bentonite was manufactured in its nanoparticle state in the present work through ultrasonic and homogenizer processes in the solution state. In case of the ultrasonic process, the viscosity increase in the low shear rate region before and after processing of the 5 wt% bentonite-based mud and the rheological properties in the presence of polymer additive were compared. In case of the homogenizer process, the rheological properties of 3 wt% bentonite-based mud employed through the homogenizer process and 5 wt% mud prepared generally were compared. Both processes reported improvement of rheological properties, in which shear thinning behavior strongly occurred when particle size decreased through FE-SEM, TEM image analysis, and particle size analyzer. A regularized Herschel-Bulkley model suitable for rheological quantitative explanation of drilling mud including yield stress was selected. The homogenizer process has the potential to be applied in the petroleum drilling industry for large-scale production, and the mechanism was confirmed by numerical analyses. In conclusion, we presented a simple and easy-to-apply process to rapidly produce nano-based drilling mud.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to suggest a more suitable study design and the corresponding reporting guidelines in the papers published in the Journal of Educational Evaluation for Health Professionals from January 2021 to September 2022. METHODS: Among 59 papers published in the Journal of Educational Evaluation for Health Professionals from January 2021 to September 2022, research articles, review articles, and brief reports were selected. The followings were analyzed: first, the percentage of articles describing the study design in the title, abstracts, or methods; second, the portion of articles describing reporting guidelines; third, the types of study design and corresponding reporting guidelines; and fourth, the suggestion of a more suitable study design based on the study design algorithm for medical literature on interventions, systematic reviews & other review types, and epidemiological studies overview. RESULTS: Out of 45 articles, 44 described study designs (97.8%). Out of 44, 19 articles were suggested to be described with more suitable study designs, which mainly occurred in before-and-after studies, diagnostic research, and non-randomized trials. Of the 18 reporting guidelines mentioned, 8 (44.4%) were considered perfect. STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) was used for descriptive studies, before-and-after studies, and randomized controlled trials; however, its use should be reconsidered. CONCLUSION: Some declarations of study design and reporting guidelines were suggested to be described with more suitable ones. Education and training on study design and reporting guidelines for researchers are needed, and reporting guideline policies for descriptive studies should also be implemented.

RESUMO

This study aimed to clarify the association between hypertension and conventional cigarette and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use, together or individually. A total of 275,762 participants were included, of which 120,766 were men and 154,996 were women. The data were drawn from the Korea Community Health Survey conducted in 2019. A multiple logistic regression model was used to examine the association between hypertension and types of smoking. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure higher than 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure higher than 90 mmHg. Based on the types of smoking, participants were grouped as dual smokers of conventional and e-cigarettes, e-cigarette only smokers, conventional cigarette only smokers, past-smokers, and non-smokers. Compared to non-smokers, dual smokers presented the highest odds ratio for hypertension in the male [odds ratio (OR): 1.24, confidence interval (CI): 1.10 to 1.39] and female groups (OR: 1.44 CI: 0.96 to 2.15). According to the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test, the two-sided p-value of < 0.001 indicated an overall statistically significant association between types of smoking and hypertension. Use of both cigarette types was statistically significant in the male group, but only the use of conventional cigarettes and past smoking were statistically significant in the female group. Among smokers of the two cigarette types, those who were dual smokers of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes were the most likely to have the highest prevalence of hypertension.

RESUMO

Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) can be defined as systematically developed recommendations and related content obtained by reviewing scientific evidence, which help healthcare providers make decisions. CPG is one of the most powerful tools that helps clinicians make evidence-based decisions in practice. Methodologies in areas essential for CPG development, such as for systematic review, risk of bias (ROB) assessment, adaptation, and the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations, are rapidly developing. Therefore, they must be well-understood and applied to evidence-based CPG development. In this regard, it is necessary to learn about the updates and changed in the methodologies for CPG development. This manuscript covers the following CPG development methodologies: (1) main principles of CPG, (2) managing conflict of interest, (3) considering patient value and preference, (4) determination of key questions, (5) ROB assessment, (6) adaptation, (7) rapid guideline development, (8) living guideline development, and (9) GIN-McMaster Guideline Development Checklist.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between workplace mistreatment, including discrimination, abuse, and overworking, and health problems among full-time workers prior to and during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in South Korea. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2017 and 2020-2021 Korean Working Conditions Surveys, including the final sample of 44,425 participants. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between workplace mistreatment and health problems among workers by gender. Interaction analysis was conducted to establish the association between the COVID-19 pandemic and health problems related to mistreatment. The occupational, demographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds were adjusted. RESULTS: We found a significant association between workplace mistreatment and health problems, including headaches, eyestrain, and anxiety. The association increased after the COVID-19 pandemic: "discrimination" (men (OR 2.26, 95% CI 1.93-2.65), women (OR 2.73, 95% CI 2.36-3.17)); abuse (men (OR 5.42, 95% CI 2.87-10.23), women (OR 4.70, 95% CI 3.12-7.08)); and overworking: men (OR 2.36, 95% CI 2.01-2.77), women (OR 3.52, 95% CI 2.68-4.61). The interaction indicates an increased incidence of people having health problems due to workplace mistreatment (OR 1.03, 95% CI 1.00-1.06) during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION: Statistically, employees who experience workplace mistreatment have worse health conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the job environment and increased the association between workplace mistreatment and health problems. To eliminate the health problems related to workplace mistreatment, it is necessary to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on work and employee health conditions.

RESUMO

Background: Sodium iodate (SI) is a chemical widely applied to induce retina degeneration in animal models. SI treatment caused formation of rosettes/folds in the outer nuclear layer (ONL) of the rat retina, but it was previously unclear whether SI also forms rosettes in mice. In addition, SI induced retina degeneration was never addressed in non-separate sclerochoroid/retina pigment epithelium/retina whole mount. Here we displayed features of retina degeneration including rosette formation in mice and developed a morphological analytic assessment using sclerochoroid/retina pigment epithelium/retina whole mounts. Methods: SI was intraperitoneally injected in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and C57BL/6J mice using a single dose (50 mg/kg) or with a dose range (10 to 50 mg/kg) in BALB/C mice. Rat retinas were investigated up to 2-week post-injection by histology and whole mounts, and mouse retinas were investigated up to 3-week post-injection by histology, fluorescent staining of sections and/or sclerochoroid/retina pigment epithelium/retina whole mounts for the morphological evaluations of the SI-induced retina damage. Results: SI-induced retina damage caused photoreceptor (PR) degeneration and rosettes/folds formation, as well as retina pigment epithelium degeneration and inward migration. It displayed mixed nuclei from choroid to PRs, due to layer disorganization, as shown by single horizontal images in the sclerochoroid/retina pigment epithelium/retina whole mounts. Measurement of the PR rosette area induced by SI provided a quantitative, morphological evaluation of retina degeneration. Conclusions: The method of non-separate sclerochoroid/retina pigment epithelium/retina whole staining and mount allows us to observe the integral horizontal view of damage from sclera to PR layers, which cannot be addressed by using sectioned and separate whole mount methods. This method is applicable for morphological evaluation of retina damage, especially in the subretinal layer.
