Background: Results from laboratories using multiple instruments should be standardized or harmonized and comparability-verified for consistent quality control. We developed a simple frequent comparability verification methodology applicable to large healthcare centers using multiple clinical chemistry instruments from different manufacturers. Methods: Comparability of five clinical chemistry instruments (Beckman Coulter AU5800, Abbott Architect Ci16000, two Siemens Vista 1500, and Ortho Vitros 5600) was evaluated from 2015 to 2019 for 12 clinical chemistry measurements. Pooled residual patient samples were used for weekly verifications. Results from any instrument exceeding the allowable verification range versus the results from the comparative instrument (AU5800) were reported to clinicians after being multiplied by conversion factors that were determined via a linear regression equation obtained from simplified comparison. Results: Over the five-year study period, 432 weekly inter-instrument comparability verification results were obtained. Approximately 58% of results were converted due to non-comparable verification. Expected average absolute percent bias and percentage of non-comparable results for non-converted and converted results after conversion action were much lower than those for data measured before conversion action. The inter-instrument CV for both non-converted and converted results after conversion action was much lower than that for measured data before conversion action for all analytes. Conclusions: We maintained within-laboratory comparability of clinical chemistry tests from multiple instruments for five years using frequent low-labor periodic comparability verification methods from pooled residual sera. This methodology is applicable to large testing facilities using multiple instruments.

Plasma cell leukemia (PCL) is clinically and genetically distinct from multiple myeloma (MM), despite controversies regarding the disease definition. To determine the distinct features of PCL, the genetic property of primary PCL (pPCL) was compared with that of secondary PCL (sPCL) and MM. In patients with pPCL, Eighty-nine non-synonymous mutations were observed in 68 genes. The most frequently mutated genes were TP53, TSC2, and TYK2. In comparison with genetic abnormalities of sPCL and MM, 45 genes were present only in pPCL while 28 genes were only in sPCL and 22 genes only in MM. Among the common genes between pPCL and MM, a higher prevalence of TP53 was observed in pPCL, compared to MM (p < 0.05), while similar, compared to sPCL (p = 0.64). In summary, pPCL patients showed a higher level of genetic heterogeneity and distinctive genetic signature in their mutational profile compared to patients with MM and sPCL.

Transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) has been identified as an inducer of hepatocyte epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which triggers liver fibrosis. Death-associated protein 6 (Daxx) is known to be associated with the TGF-ß-induced apoptotic pathway, but the function of Daxx in liver fibrosis remains unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the role of Daxx in liver fibrosis. We used liver fibrosis tissues from humans and mice to assess Daxx expression. EMT properties and TGF-ß signaling pathway activation were investigated in the Daxx-overexpressing FL83B cell line. The therapeutic effect of Daxx was investigated in a mouse model of liver fibrosis by the hydrodynamic injection of plasmids. The expression of Daxx was markedly decreased in hepatocytes from fibrotic human and mouse livers, as well as in hepatocytes treated with TGF-ß in vitro. The overexpression of Daxx inhibited the EMT process by interfering with the TGF-ß-induced phosphorylation of Smad2. Coimmunoprecipitation analysis confirmed that Daxx reduced the transcriptional activity of Smad2 by binding to its MH1 domain and interfering with Smad2 acetylation. In addition, the therapeutic delivery of Daxx alleviated liver fibrosis in a thioacetamide-induced fibrosis mouse model. Overall, our results indicate that Daxx could be a potential therapeutic target to modulate fibrogenesis, as well as a useful biomarker for liver fibrosis.

The association of short-term particulate matter concentration with cardiovascular disease (CVD) among cancer survivors is yet unclear. Using the National Health Insurance Service database from South Korea, the study population consisted of 22,864 5-year cancer survivors with CVD events during the period 2015-2018. Using a time-stratified case-crossover design, each case date (date of incident CVD) was matched with three or four referent dates, resulting in a total of 101,576 case and referent dates. The daily average particulate matter 10 (PM10), 2.5 (PM2.5), and 2.5-10 (PM2.5-10) on the day of case or referent date (lag0), 1-3 days before the case or referent date (lag1, lag2, and lag3), and the mean value 0-3 days before the case or referent date (lag0-3) were determined. Conditional logistic regression was conducted to calculate the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD according to quartiles of PM10, PM2.5, and PM2.5-10. Compared to the 1st (lowest) quartile of lag0-3 PM10, the 4th (highest) quartile of lag0-3 PM10 was associated with higher odds for CVD (aOR 1.13, 95% CI 1.06-1.21). The 4th quartiles of lag1 (aOR 1.12, 95% CI 1.06-1.19), lag2 (aOR 1.09, 95% CI 1.03-1.16), lag3 (aOR 1.06, 95% CI 1.00-1.12), and lag0-3 (aOR 1.11, 95% CI 1.05-1.18) PM2.5 were associated with higher odds for CVD compared to the respective 1st quartiles. Similarly, the 4th quartile of lag0-3 PM2.5-10 was associated with higher CVD events (aOR 1.11, 95% CI 1.03-1.19) compared to the 1st quartile. Short-term exposure to high levels of PM may be associated with increased CVD risk among cancer survivors.

Taxonomic positions of four Gram-negative bacterial strains, which were isolated from larvae of two insects in Jeju, Republic of Korea, were determined by a polyphasic approach. Strains CWB-B4, CWB-B41 and CWB-B43 were recovered from larvae of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis, whereas strain BWR-B9T was from larvae of Allomyrina dichotoma. All the isolates grew at 10-37 °C, at pH 5.0-9.0 and in the presence of 4 % (w/v) NaCl. The 16S rRNA gene phylogeny showed that the four isolates formed two distinct sublines within the order Enterobacteriales and closely associated with members of the genus Jinshanibacter. The first group represented by strain CWB-B4 formed a tight cluster with Jinshanibacter xujianqingii CF-1111T (99.3 % sequence similarity), whereas strain BWR-B9T was most closely related to Jinshanibacter zhutongyuii CF-458T (99.5 % sequence similarity). The 92 core gene analysis showed that the isolates belonged to the family Budviciaceae and supported the clustering shown in 16S rRNA gene phylogeny. The genomic DNA G+C content of the isolates was 45.2 mol%. A combination of overall genomic relatedness and phenotypic distinctness supported that three isolates from Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis are different strains of Jinshanibacter xujianqingii, whereas one isolate from Allomyrina dichotoma represents a new species of the genus Jinshanibacter. On the basis of results obtained here, Jinshanibacter allomyrinae sp. nov. (type strain BWR-B9T=KACC 22153T=NBRC 114879T) and Insectihabitans xujianqingii gen. nov., comb. nov. are proposed, with the emended descriptions of the genera Jinshanibacter, Limnobaculum and Pragia.

This study aimed to determine whether nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an independent risk factor for CVD and to identify the most useful NAFLD diagnostic tool for predicting CVD. Data from a total of 23,376 Korean adults without established CVD were analyzed. Cardiovascular risk was calculated using the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) 2008. The presence of NAFLD was defined as moderate-to-severe fatty liver disease diagnosed by ultrasonography. Scores for fatty liver were calculated using four NAFLD scoring systems (Fatty Liver Index, FLI; Hepatic Steatosis Index, HSI; Simple NAFLD Score, SNS; Comprehensive NAFLD Score, CNS), and were compared and analyzed according to cardiovascular risk group. Using the FRS, 67.4% of participants were considered to be at low risk of CVD, 21.5% at intermediate risk, and 11.1% at high risk. As the risk of CVD increased, both the prevalence of NAFLD and the score from each NAFLD scoring system increased significantly (p < 0.001). In the unadjusted analysis, the CNS had the strongest association with high CVD risk; in the adjusted analysis, the FLI score was most strongly associated with high CVD risk. Fatty liver is an important independent risk factor for CVD. Therefore, the available NAFLD scoring systems could be utilized to predict CVD.

BACKGROUND: To date, there is a paucity of reports clarifying the change of spinopelvic parameters in patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD) who underwent long segment spinal fusion using iliac screw (IS) and S2-alar-iliac screw (S2AI) fixation. METHODS: A retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent deformity correction surgery for ASD between 2013 and 2017 was performed. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether IS or S2AI fixation was performed. All radiographic parameters were measured preoperatively, immediately postoperatively, and the last follow-up. Demographics, intraoperative and clinical data were analyzed between the two groups. Additionally, the cohort was subdivided according to the postoperative change in pelvic incidence (PI): subgroup (C) was defined as change in PI ≥5° and subgroup (NC) with change < 5°. In subgroup analyses, the 2 different types of postoperative change of PI were directly compared. RESULTS: A total of 142 patients met inclusion criteria: 111 who received IS and 31 received S2AI fixation. The IS group (65.6 ± 26°, 39.8 ± 13.8°) showed a significantly higher change in lumbar lordosis (LL) and upper lumbar lordosis (ULL) than the S2AI group (54.4 ± 17.9°, 30.3 ± 9.9°) (p < 0.05). In subgroup (C), PI significantly increased from 53° preoperatively to 59° postoperatively at least 50% of IS cohort, with a mean change of 5.8° (p < 0.05). The clinical outcomes at the last follow-up were significantly better in IS group than in S2AI group in terms of VAS scores for back and leg. The occurrence of sacroiliac joint pain and pelvic screw fracture were significantly greater in S2AI group than in IS group (25.8% vs 9%, p < 0.05) and (16.1% vs 3.6%, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with the S2AI technique, the IS technique usable larger cantilever force demonstrated more correction of lumbar lordosis, and possible increase in pelvic incidence. Further study is warranted to clarify the clinical impaction of these results.

RESUMO

Photocatalytic N2 reduction has emerged as one of the most attractive routes to produce NH3 as a useful commodity for chemicals used in industries and as a carbon-free energy source. Recently, significant progress has been made in understanding, exploring, and designing efficient photocatalyst. In this review, we outline the important mechanistic and experimental procedures for photocatalytic NH3 production. In addition, we review effective strategies on development of photocatalysts. Finally, our analyses on the characteristics and modifications of photocatalysts have been summarized, based on which we discuss the possible future research directions, particularly on preparing more efficient catalysts. Overall, this review provides insights on improving photocatalytic NH3 production and designing solar-driven chemical conversions.

Regulatory T cells play a key role in immune tolerance to self-antigens, thereby preventing autoimmune diseases. However, no drugs targeting Treg cells have been approved for clinical trials yet. Here, a chimeric peptide is generated by conjugation of the cytoplasmic domain of CTLA-4 (ctCTLA-4) with dNP2 for intracellular delivery, dNP2-ctCTLA-4, and evaluated Foxp3 expression during Th0, Th1, Treg, and Th17 differentiation dependent on TGF-ß. The lysine motif of ctCTLA-4, not tyrosine motif, is required for Foxp3 expression for Treg induction and amelioration of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Transcriptome analysis reveals that dNP2-ctCTLA-4-treated T cells express Treg transcriptomic patterns with properties of suppressive functions. In addition, the molecular interaction between the lysine motif of ctCTLA-4 and PKC-η is critical for Foxp3 expression. Although both CTLA-4-Ig and dNP2-ctCTLA-4 treatment in vivo ameliorated EAE progression, only dNP2-ctCTLA-4 requires Treg cells for inhibition of disease progression and prevention of relapse. Furthermore, the CTLA-4 signaling peptide is able to induce human Tregs in vitro and in vivo as well as from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of multiple sclerosis patients. These results collectively suggest that the chimeric CTLA-4 signaling peptide can be used for successful induction of regulatory T cells in vivo to control autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis.

Study Design: This is a retrospective comparative cohort study. Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of anterior resorption of the cervical spine in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and its relationship with sagittal alignment. Overview of Literature: This study believes that no published reports exist regarding the relationship between anterior resorption and spinopelvic alignment. Methods: This retrospective study included 238 patients with AS who underwent surgical correction for thoracolumbar kyphosis. Of these, 80 patients with complete subaxial ankylosis were selected and divided into two groups: groups 1 (consisting of 28 patients with anterior bony resorption) and 2 (consisting of 52 patients without anterior resorption). Cervical sagittal parameters were analyzed and compared between the two groups. Results: The average lateral diameter measured in patients with C5 anterior resorption was 84.2%±7.8% (62.4%-96.8%). Cervical lordosis was 8.7°±13.4° and 10.9°±11.5° in groups 1 and 2 (p=0.556), respectively. No significant differences were noted between the two groups on spinopelvic alignment in the T1 slope (52.2°±11.1° and 53.3°±9.9° in groups 1 and 2, respectively; p=0.742), C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA; 6.2±1.7 cm and 6.2±1.8 cm in groups 1 and 2, respectively; p=0.978), C7 SVA (14.3±4.9 cm and 14.6±6.2 cm in groups 1 and 2, respectively; p=0.823), or T1 pelvic angle (27.1°±8.9° and 31.6°±11.2° in groups 1 and 2, respectively; p=0.382). Correlation analyses were significant between the extent of anterior resorption and sagittal parameters, C2-C7 lordosis (R2=-0.428, p=0.021), and T1-T4 kyphosis (R2=-0.375, p=0.045). Conclusions: Anterior bony resorption could develop by stress concentration. However, the development was not related to the sagittal alignment. The particular segments involved in developing anterior resorption varied, possibly because of their dependence on the preceding pattern of ankylosis.

Epstein-Barr virus-induced G-protein coupled receptor 2 (EBI2) is important in regulating B cell activation. We investigated whether EBI2 expression on B cells is associated with acute attacks in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder with aquaporin-4 IgG (AQP4-IgG(+) NMOSD). Blood samples were collected from patients with AQP4-IgG(+) NMOSD, multiple sclerosis (MS), and patients without inflammatory demyelinating diseases (non-IDD controls). CD19+ B cells and CD4+ T cells were analyzed for surface expression of EBI2. Serum cytokine levels were also analyzed. The EBI2+CD19+ to EBI2-CD19+ cell ratio was significantly higher in patients with AQP4-IgG(+) NMOSD enrolled within 2 months of an attack than in those with non-IDDs (p = 0.007) and MS (p = 0.003). Patients with AQP4-IgG(+) NMOSD enrolled within 2 months of an attack had a higher EBI2+CD19+ cell frequency than patients with AQP4-IgG(+) NMOSD enrolled 2 months after a recent attack (p = 0.001). The EBI2+CD19+ cell frequency was positively correlated with interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10. EBI2 expression on B cells could be associated with acute attacks of AQP4-IgG(+) NMOSD, possibly through IL-6- or IL-10-related pathways.

BACKGROUND: Canine adipose-derived stem cells (cADSCs) exhibit various differentiation properties and are isolated from the canine subcutaneous fat. Although cADSCs are valuable as tools for research on adipogenic differentiation, studies focusing on adipogenic differentiation methods and the underlying mechanisms are still lacking. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to establish an optimal method for adipogenic differentiation conditions of cADSCs and evaluate the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and estrogen receptor (ER) signaling in the adipogenic differentiation. METHODS: To induce adipogenic differentiation of cADSCs, 3 different adipogenic medium conditions, MDI, DRI, and MDRI, using 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (M), dexamethasone (D), insulin (I), and rosiglitazone (R) were tested. RESULTS: MDRI, addition of PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone to MDI, was the most significantly facilitated cADSC into adipocyte. GW9662, an antagonist of PPARγ, significantly reduced adipogenic differentiation induced by rosiglitazone. Adipogenic differentiation was also stimulated when 17ß-estradiol was added to MDI and DRI, and this stimulation was inhibited by the ER antagonist ICI182,780. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our results suggest that PPARγ and ER signaling are related to the adipogenic differentiation of cADSCs. This study could provide basic information for future research on obesity or anti-obesity mechanisms in dogs.

Because surgical treatment of chronic extensor tendon dislocation with sagittal band injury is complex and often requires donor grafts, we suggest a new technique: pulley creation for additional sagittal band reconstruction. A 76-year-old man diagnosed with chronic extensor tendon dislocation with radial sagittal band injury was treated by resecting the distended portion of the radial sagittal band, followed by plication. Using the remnant tissue obtained after resection, additional sagittal band reconstruction was performed using two mini soft suture anchors in the form of a pulley surrounding the extensor tendon. Three-year outcome was satisfactory. Pulley creation for additional sagittal band reconstruction with direct repair of the radial sagittal band is a new surgical option for chronic extensor tendon dislocation. The technique is quick and easy, with good patient satisfaction and no donor site complications.

BACKGROUND: There is no evidence whether it is best to stop drinking alcohol at all or whether it is okay to drink a little in that light-to-moderate alcohol use was associated with low cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to non-drinker among colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors, who are regarded as vulnerable to CVD. Therefore, we evaluated the association between alcohol consumption and incident CVD among long-term survivors of CRC. METHODS: This population-based, retrospective cohort study utilized data from the Korean National Insurance Service of 20,653 long-term survivors of CRC diagnosed between 2006 and 2012. Participants were followed up to the date of CVD, death, or December 31, 2018. All patients were categorized according to their daily alcohol consumption (g/day). The outcomes were incident CVD, including ischemic heart disease (IHD) and ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards regression after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors and history of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. RESULTS: There was no association between alcohol consumption and incident CVD among long-term survivors of CRC. Additionally, hazardous alcohol consumption (≥ 40 g/day in male patients and ≥ 20 g/day in female patients) was associated with increased CVD, ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke (adjusted hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.51 [1.15-1.97], 1.60 [1.03-2.48], and 2.65 [1.25-5.62], respectively) compared with non-drinkers. CONCLUSION: No discernable protective association was found between alcohol consumption and incident CVD for even light-to-moderate drinking among long-term survivors of CRC. Alcohol consumption ≥40 g/day in male patients and ≥ 20 g/day in female patients was associated with an increased risk of stroke compared with non-drinkers. These novel results provide useful evidence when advising survivors of CRC regarding alcohol use.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread all over the world showing high transmissibility. Many studies have proposed diverse diagnostic methods based on deep learning using chest X-ray images focusing on performance improvement. In reviewing them, this study noticed that evaluation results might be influenced by dataset organization. Therefore, this study identified whether the high-performance values can prove the clinical application potential. METHODS: This study selected chest X-ray image databases which have been widely applied in previous studies. One database includes images for COVID-19, while the others consist of normal and pneumonia images. Then, the COVID-19 classification model was designed and trained on diverse database compositions and evaluated using confusion matrix-based metrics. Also, each database was analyzed by graphical representation methods. RESULTS: The performance was significantly different according to dataset composition. Overall, higher performance was identified on the dataset organized with different databases for each class, compared with the dataset from same database. Also, there were significant differences in the image characteristics between different databases. CONCLUSIONS: The experimental results indicate that model may be trained based on differences of the image characteristics between databases and not on lesion features. This shows that evaluation metrics can be influenced by dataset organization, and high metric values would not directly mean the potential for clinical application. These emphasize the importance of suitable dataset organization for applying COVID-19 diagnosis methods to real clinical sites. Radiologists should sufficiently understand about this issue as actual user of these methods.

PURPOSE: Cancer survivors are currently considered high-risk populations for cardiovascular disease. However, no studies have directly evaluated risks and benefits of physical activity for stroke among long-term colorectal cancer survivors. METHODS: This large-scale observational cohort study used data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Newly diagnosed colorectal cancer patients diagnosed between 2006 and 2013 who survived at least 5 years were studied. The primary outcome was stroke, including ischemic stroke and hemorrhage stroke. All patients were followed up to the date of stroke, death, or December 2018, whichever occurred earliest. RESULTS: Of 20,674 colorectal cancer survivors with a median age of 64 years, stroke occurred in 601 patients (2.9%). Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity lowered stroke risk in 5-9 time/week group (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.57-0.93; P=0.010), but not in ≥10 time/week group (aHR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.62-1.17; P=0.327). Walking also lowered stroke risk in 4-5 time/week group (aHR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.58-0.97; P=0.028), but not in ≥6 time/week group (aHR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.78-1.18; P=0.707). In addition, benefits of physical activity were maximized when carried out both moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and walking with moderate frequency (aHR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.60-0.97; P=0.027). CONCLUSIONS: Moderate frequency of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (5-9 time/week) and walking (4-5 time/week) significantly lowers the risk of stroke, whereas high-frequency physical activity reduces the benefits of physical activity. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: Physical activity with moderate frequency is important in the prevention of stroke for long-term colorectal cancer survivors.

Initial attempt of endovascular treatment (EVT) for spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (SDAVF) is preferred because of concurrent diagnosis and treatment. However, outcomes following further treatment with initial EVT are not well studied. We retrospectively reviewed 71 patients with SDAVF to evaluate treatment outcomes of SDAVF after an initial EVT attempt. Pretreatment and posttreatment functional states were assessed by the Aminoff-Logue scale (ALS). In the case of incomplete occlusion or recurrence, overall outcomes after further treatments were compared. Of the 71 patients, 56 underwent initial EVT. Complete occlusion was achieved by initial EVT in 37 of 56 patients (66.1%). Multiple feeders were more frequently observed in patients with incomplete occlusion than complete occlusion after initial EVT (73.7% vs. 27%, P < 0.001). Among 19 patients with incomplete occlusion upon initial EVT, 14 underwent additional surgery, 13 of whom (92.9%) obtained improved or stationary functional outcomes. Functional improvement was not observed in patients who had repeated EVT or follow-up without further treatment. Recurrence was observed in 8 of 37 patients with complete occlusion upon initial EVT. Additional surgery achieved improved functional outcomes in cases of incomplete occlusion of SDAVF after the initial EVT attempt or recurrence rather than repeated EVT or follow-up.

The association of fluctuations in body mass index with cardiovascular risk in long-term is not well understood. This study aimed to investigate cardiovascular outcomes of weight fluctuation. Total of 67,101 obese adults from the Korean National Health Insurance Service who received health examinations in three separate biennial periods were included. Participants were followed up from January 1, 2008 to the date of cardiovascular disease, death, or December 31, 2015, and categorized into 9 distinctive groups according to the BMI. Continuous weight gain showed an increased risk of overall cardiovascular disease (hazard ratio [HR], 2.36; P = 0.007), whereas weight loss after weight maintenance (HR, 0.91; P = 0.016) and weight maintenance after weight loss (HR, 0.91; P = 0.004) were ameliorative compared to the no weight change group. As for coronary heart disease, weight maintenance after weight gain was unfavorable (HR, 1.25; P = 0.004) while weight loss after weight maintenance (HR, 0.82; P < 0.001), weight cycling (HR, 0.83; P = 0.043), and weight maintenance after weight loss (HR, 0.88; P = 0.012) were beneficial. Weight maintenance after weight loss is beneficial for obese adults in terms of cardiovascular risks. In addition, weight loss is in part related to reduced risk of coronary heart disease despite weight cycling.

A predictive biomarker of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based treatments in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been clearly demonstrated. In this study, we focused on the infiltration and programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in the tumor microenvironment of HCC. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that PD-L1 was preferentially expressed on CD68+ macrophages in the tumor microenvironment of HCC, suggestive of its expression in TAMs rather than in T cells or tumor cells (P < 0.05). A co-culture experiment using activated T cells and M2 macrophages confirmed a significant increase in T cell functionality after the pretreatment of M2 macrophages with anti-PD-L1. Syngeneic mouse model experiments demonstrated that TAMs expressed PD-L1 and tumors treated with anti-PD-L1 showed smaller diameters than those treated with IgG. In these mice, anti-PD-L1 treatment increased activation markers in intratumoral CD8+ T cells and reduced the size of the TAM population. Regarding nivolumab-treated patients, three of eight patients responded to the anti-PD-1 treatment. The percentage of Ki-67-positive CD4+ and CD8+ T cells was higher in responders than non-responders after nivolumab. Overall, PD-L1 expression on TAMs may be targeted by immune-based HCC treatment, and ICI treatment results in the reinvigoration of exhausted CD8+ T cells in HCC.

In this study, we assessed how image quality depends on the angle of tilt of a flex tilt coil supporting device during an MRI examination. All measurements were performed with an American College of Radiology (ACR) MRI phantom using a flex tilt coil supporting device. All images were analyzed using an automatic assessment method following the ACR MRI accreditation guidance. Image quality was compared between acquisitions grouped according to the angle of tilt of the coil supporting device: group A (Flat mode), group B (10˚), and group C (18˚). All measured image qualities were within the ACR recommended criteria, regardless of the angle of tilt of the flex tilt coil supporting device. However, statistically significant differences between the three groups were found for slice thickness, position accuracy, image intensity uniformity, and SNR (P < 0.05, ANOVA). The flex tilt coil supporting device can provide sufficient image quality, passing the criteria of the ACR MRI guideline, despite differences in slice thickness, slice position accuracy, image intensity uniformity, and SNR according to the angle of tilt.
