RESUMO

Excessive body fat and the related dysmetabolic diseases affect both developed and developing countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the beneficial role of a bacterial culture supernatant (hereafter: BS) of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and their potential mechanisms of action on white-fat browning and lipolysis. For selection of four candidates among 55 Lactic acid producing bacteria (LAB) from human infant faeces, we evaluated by Oil Red O staining and Ucp1 mRNA quantitation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. The expression of browning and lipolysis markers was examined along with in vitro assays. The possible mechanism was revealed by molecular and biological experiments including inhibitor and small interfering RNA (siRNA) assays. In a mouse model, physiological, histological, and biochemical parameters and expression of some thermogenesis-related genes were compared among six experimental groups fed a high-fat diet and one normal-diet control group. The results allow us to speculate that BS treatment promotes browning and lipolysis both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the BS may activate thermogenic programs via a mechanism involving PKA-CREB signaling in 3T3-L1 cells. According to our data, we can propose that two LAB strains, Bifidobacterium longum DS0956 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus DS0508, may be good candidates for a dietary supplement against obesity and metabolic diseases; however, further research is required for the development as dietary supplements or drugs.

RATIONALE: The incidence of a unicornuate uterus is 0.2% to 0.3% of the whole population. A unicornuate uterus is closely associated with obstetrical complications such as early miscarriages, ectopic pregnancy, and malpresentation. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old patient developed a rare ectopic pregnancy arising at a distal, fimbriated end of the undescended fallopian tube. DIAGNOSES: A transvaginal ultrasound scan revealed hemoperitoneum and no gestational sac in the uterine endometrium. A laparoscopic finding showed that high up in the right abdomen, just below the liver, an ectopic mass could be seen arising at a distal, fimbriated end of the fallopian tube, which was developed adjacent to the undescended right ectopic ovary. INTERVENTIONS: After laparoscopic removal of the right salpinx, we removed it with a bag. OUTCOMES: One day after the operation, she was discharged without problems. Postoperative hysterosalpingography showed the unicornuate uterus with patent left and some right salpinx. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a unicornuate uterus, right ovary at the right inferior hepatic area, a bilateral normal kidney, and double inferior vena cava. LESSONS: This is the first reported case of its type. It demonstrated that ectopic pregnancy may occur in the upper abdomen, not in the pelvic cavity, in uterine anomaly, and double inferior vena cava; hence, we must thoroughly check the whole abdominal cavity. Additional imaging tests are needed after treatment to see if there are any abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Systemic effects of long-term narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy have not been well studied in vitiligo patients. An 11-year nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Korean National Health Insurance claims database (2007-2017). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of long-term NB-UVB phototherapy on the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in vitiligo patients. METHODS: This study included vitiligo patients with ≥100 phototherapy sessions (phototherapy group, n = 3229) and <3 phototherapy sessions (no phototherapy group, n = 9687), in which covariables with age, sex, insurance type and comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia were matched by 1 : 3 propensity score matching. The outcomes of interest were cardiovascular (ischaemic heart disease and myocardial infarction) and cerebrovascular events (cerebrovascular infraction and haemorrhage). Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the associations between NB-UVB phototherapy and each event. RESULTS: The risk of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events was significantly decreased in the phototherapy group compared with the no phototherapy group [hazard ratio (HR) 0.637, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.523-0.776]. Subgroup analysis revealed that the risk of cardiovascular (HR: 0.682, 95% CI: 0.495-0.940) and cerebrovascular events (HR: 0.601, 95% CI: 0.470-0.769) were significantly lower in the phototherapy group than the no phototherapy group, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that long-term NB-UVB phototherapy could decrease the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in patients with vitiligo.

AIM: To differentiate dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) from reflux venous flow (RVF) by assessment of asymmetric enlargement of external carotid artery (ECA) branches on three-dimensional (3D) time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients with DAVF and 27 patients with RVF were included from September 2007 to April 2019. The locations of DAVF were the cavernous (n=9) and sigmoid-transverse (n=6) sinuses, and the jugular (n=3) and sphenoparietal (n=1) veins. Two radiologists visually assessed asymmetric enlargement of the ascending pharyngeal artery (ASP), middle meningeal artery (MMA), accessory meningeal artery (AMA), artery of the foramen rotundum, and occipital artery. MMA size was also measured quantitatively. RESULTS: More frequent asymmetric enlargement of the ASP and MMA were seen in DAVF than in RVF (17 of 19 versus 3 of 27 for ASP; 16 of 19 versus 1 of 27 for MMA, p<0.01). The AMA, artery of the foramen rotundum, and occipital arteries were not visualised in RVF patients. The ipsilateral MMA size was significantly larger in DAVF than in RVF (2.14 versus 0.64 mm2, p< 0.01). The diagnostic performance of ipsilateral MMA size for DAVF was good, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.89, with a sensitivity of 84.2% and a specificity of 81.5% at a cut-off of 1.08 mm2. CONCLUSIONS: DAVF showed significantly larger ECA branches than RVF on 3D TOF-MRA. Therefore, thorough evaluation of ECA branches could help to differentiate DAVF from RVF.

This study investigated the combined effects of cooking temperature and time on the meat and eating quality characteristics of the sous-vide chicken breast. For the control group, chicken breast samples were cooked in a convection oven until the internal temperature reached 71°C. Each sample for sous-vide cooking was vacuum packaged and then cooked under continuous thermocontrolled conditions in a water bath at 6 combinations of cooking temperature (60 and 70°C) and time (1, 2, and 3 h). Sous-vide cooked chicken meat at 60°C for 1 h (SV60-1h) showed lower cooking loss (6.58 vs. 26.5%, P < 0.05), Warner-Bratzler shear force (21.7 vs. 29.1 N, P < 0.05), and hardness (9.40 vs. 17.3 N, P < 0.05) than meat cooked by conventional oven. Similar to the objective tenderness parameters, cooked chicken meat from the SV60 treatments for all cooking times showed higher scores in all the tenderness attributes than the control group (P < 0.05). However, a higher flavor intensity was observed in the SV70-3h and control groups than in the SV60 treatments (P < 0.05). Owing to a lesser developed flavor in chicken meat from the SV60-1h treatment, the SV60-2h and 3h treatments were assigned a higher acceptability rating for overall impression (P < 0.05). Therefore, cooking temperature and time of sous-vide significantly influenced the physicochemical and palatability characteristics of chicken breast. In this study, the optimum conditions for the sous-vide chicken breast are to continuously cook at 60°C for 2 to 3 h to improve sensory quality characteristics without reducing the water-holding capacity.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between statin exposure and dementia risk in individuals with hypercholesterolaemia using data from the NHIS-HEALS database between 2002 and 2015. METHODS: Subjects were classified into statin exposure and statin nonexposure groups according to medication possession ratio. Dementia was defined as those with primary diagnostic dementia codes such as F00-F03, G30, G31.1, G31.9 or G31.82. Cox proportional hazards regression models were adopted after stepwise adjustment for confounders to investigate the prospective association between statin exposure and dementia risk. RESULTS: During the follow-up period (median follow-up 11.7 years), 711 cases of dementia occurred, accounting for 11.5% of the total study population (statin exposure group, 8.2%; statin nonexposure group, 12.9%). Compared to the statin nonexposure group, fully adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for overall dementia in the statin exposure group were 0.63 (0.43-0.91) and 0.62 (0.50-0.78) in men and women, respectively. Compared to the statin nonexposure group, the HRs (95% CIs) for Alzheimer's disease and related dementia, vascular dementia and other types of dementia in the statin exposure group were 0.54 (0.32-0.91), 2.45 (0.69-8.68) and 0.59 (0.32-1.07), respectively, in men and 0.53 (0.38-0.73), 1.29 (0.42-3.96) and 0.70 (0.51-0.96), respectively, in women. CONCLUSIONS: Hypercholesterolaemic individuals exposed to statin had a lower risk of overall dementia and Alzheimer's disease and related dementia in both sexes, and a lower risk of other types of dementia in women, than subjects who were not exposed to statins.

Continued scaling of electronic devices shows the need to incorporate high mobility alternatives to silicon, the cornerstone of the semiconductor industry, into modern field effect transistor (FET) devices. Germanium is well-poised to serve as the channel material in FET devices as it boasts an electron and hole mobility more than twice and four times that of Si, respectively. However, its unstable native oxide makes its passivation a crucial step toward its potential integration into future FETs. The International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS) predicts continued aggressive scaling not only of the device size but also of the pitch in nanowire arrays. The development of a vapor-phase chemical passivation technique will be required to prevent the collapse of these structures that can occur because of the surface tension and capillary forces that are experienced when tight-pitched nanowire arrays are processed via liquid-phase chemistry. Reported here is a vapor-phase process using hexanethiol for the passivation of planar Ge(100) substrates. Results benchmarking it against its well-established liquid-phase equivalent are also presented. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to monitor the effectiveness of the developed vapor-phase protocol, where the presence of oxide was monitored at 0, 24, and 168 h. Water contact angle measurements compliment these results by demonstrating an increase in hydrophobicity of the passivated substrates. Atomic force microscopy monitored the surface topology before and after processing to ensure the process does not cause roughening of the surface, which is critical to demonstrate suitability for nanostructures. It is shown that the 200 min vapor-phase passivation procedure generates stable, passivated surfaces with less roughness than the liquid-phase counterpart.

New (1-x)Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 + xCaFeO3-δ solid solution compounds were fabricated using a sol-gel method. The CaFeO3-δ materials were mixed into host Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 materials to form a solid solution that exhibited similar crystal symmetry to those of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 phases. The random distribution of Ca and Fe cations in the Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 crystals resulted in a distorted structure. The optical band gaps decreased from 3.11 eV for the pure Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 samples to 2.34 eV for the 9 mol% CaFeO3-δ-modified Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 samples. Moreover, the Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 samples exhibited weak photoluminescence because of the intrinsic defects and suppressed photoluminescence with increasing CaFeO3-δ concentration. Experimental and theoretical studies via density functional theory calculations showed that pure Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 exhibited intrinsic ferromagnetism, which is associated with the possible presence of Bi, Na, and Ti vacancies and Ti3+-defect states. Further studies showed that such an induced magnetism by intrinsic defects can also be enhanced effectively with CaFeO3-δ addition. This study provides a basis for understanding the role of secondary phase as a solid solution in Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 to facilitate the development of lead-free ferroelectric materials.

AIMS: Vimentin citrullination, the calcium (Ca2+ )-dependent peptidylarginine deiminase (PAD)-mediated conversion of an arginine residue of vimentin to a citrulline residue, has emerged as a pathophysiological outcome of autoimmune diseases and neurodegeneration. However, the roles, functions, and expression of citrullinated vimentin have not yet been elucidated because available antibodies are limited. METHODS: We developed mouse monoclonal IgG1 and IgM specific for vimentin citrullinated at position R440 or R450 and applied Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescent staining to investigate the pathogenesis of prion diseases in animal models, in patients with prion diseases, and in vitro. RESULTS: Vimentin was found to be highly citrullinated at R440 and R450, and these citrullinated forms were mainly expressed in reactive astrocytes in the brain tissues of scrapie-infected mice. Full-length and cleaved forms of citrullinated vimentin were found in the cerebral cortices of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) patients. The distribution of citrullinated vimentin was mainly confirmed in vimentin-, GFAP-, and YKL-40-positive reactive astrocytes. Biochemically, citrullination promoted resistance to the caspase-3- and caspase-9-mediated fragmentation of vimentin. Additionally, citrullination led to increased cytoplasmic and integral membrane/organelle vimentin enrichment, which indicated changes in the intrinsic solubility and distribution of vimentin. CONCLUSIONS: Our observations suggest that citrullinated vimentin acts as a specific indicator for the reactive state of astrocytes under abnormal neurological conditions. In addition, these novel antibodies will be helpful for studying the role of citrullinated vimentin in the pathogenesis of human disorders.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to clarify the anatomy of the superior hypogastric plexus, which would contribute to advancement of nerve-sparing paraaortic lymphadenectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen cadavers were dissected and morphometrically analyzed based on photographic images. Anatomical landmarks such as aortic bifurcation, transitional points of abdominal aorta to bilateral common iliac arteries, and cross point of the right ureter and pelvic brim, and cross point of sigmoid mesentery and pelvic brim were selected as reference points. RESULTS: The left lowest lumbar splanchnic nerve was located more laterally to transitional point of abdominal aorta to in 11/18 specimens, whereas the right lowest lumbar splanchnic nerve passed onto the right transitional point in only one specimen. The lowest lumbar splanchnic nerves or the superior hypogastric plexus covered the aortic bifurcation in 11/18 specimens. The superior hypogastric plexus was separate from the cross point of right ureter and pelvic brim as well as cross point of sigmoid mesentery and pelvic brim. CONCLUSIONS: The SHP is at risk of injury during paraaortic lymphadenectomy because of its topography. Preservation of the superior hypogastric plexus regarding its anatomic basis during paraaortic lymphadenectomy is required.

Using flow cytometry GD2 ganglioside expression was evaluated both on colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines and on tumor tissue samples from colorectal cancer patients. The marker was found on EpCAM-positive tumor cells in 6 of 12 patients' samples but not on the HT29 and CaCo-2 cell lines. GD2 expression was not an exceptional feature of cancer stem cells, since its expression level was similar on CD133-positive and CD133-negative tumor cells. Thus, the presence of GD2 ganglioside was revealed on colorectal adenocarcinoma cells for the first time. This finding makes it possible to use targeted therapy to treat this disease.

BACKGROUND: Despite improved survival of patients with lupus nephritis (LN), some require kidney transplantation because of progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, the transplant outcomes of these patients and other recipients have not been thoroughly compared. METHODS: In total, 1848 Korean kidney recipients who underwent transplantation from 1998 to 2017 at two tertiary referral centers were evaluated retrospectively. Among them, 28 recipients with LN, and 50 control recipients matched by age, sex, and donor type, were compared with respect to graft and patient survival. We pooled our data with 17 previous cohort studies in which the graft survival of recipients with LN was described in detail. RESULTS: During the median follow-up period of 9.5 years (maximum 21 years), graft failure (GF) occurred in 10.7% and 16.0% of LN and control recipients, respectively. No differences were found in the rates of GF and death-censored graft failure or patient survival between the two groups. The risks of acute T cell-mediated and antibody-mediated rejection were also similar between the two groups. The pooled analysis showed similar 1- and 5-year graft survival rates between LN and control recipients. CONCLUSIONS: Kidney transplantation is an acceptable option in patients with concurrent LN and ESRD.

SETTING: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey is a national, population-based, cross-sectional surveillance programme.OBJECTIVE: 1) To investigate the prevalence of spontaneously healed pulmonary tuberculosis (SHPTB) on chest radiographs (CXRs) in South Korea, as well as its demographic and clinical associations, and 2) to determine the relationship between SHPTB and smoking.DESIGN: People with normal findings on CXRs (n = 24 190) and those with SHPTB (n = 1863) were compared in univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses with respect to smoking and demographic and clinical factors.RESULTS: The prevalence of SHPTB was 7.2%. The proportion of patients with SHPTB tended to be higher in males, people of older age, ever smokers, as well as people with low body mass index and low education level. In bivariate analysis, after adjustments for age and sex, SHPTB was found more often among ex-smokers (P = 0.005) and current smokers (P = 0.024) than in non-smokers. Multivariate analyses revealed increased relative odds for SHPTB with increased age (P < 0.001), male sex (P < 0.001) and ex-smoker status (P = 0.016). Passive smoking was also significantly associated with SHPTB (P = 0.022).CONCLUSION: In addition to increasing the risk of active TB and negatively affecting the outcome of TB treatment, smoking is also associated with SHPTB, as detected on CXRs.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and lung function in a community-based cohort of South Korea.DESIGN: The Ansung-Ansan cohort database (an ongoing prospective study of a community-based population) was used in the analysis. We defined airway obstruction as the ratio between forced expiratory volume in 1 sec:forced vital capacity ratio (FEV1:FVC) of <95% of the predicted value for a healthy person. We also used the serum level of hs-CRP as a marker of inflammation. Multivariate analysis was performed with adjustment for the clinical characteristics of the participants.RESULTS: A total of 5528 individuals were eligible for the study. The average age was 55.1 years, and 47.8% were males. The prevalence of airway obstruction was 9.0%, and the mean hs-CRP level was 1.51 mg/dl. Serum hs-CRP levels increased with the severity of airway obstruction, and the latter worsened with an increase in the hs-CRP level. In multivariate analysis, as the hs-CRP level increased, FEV1 and FVC decreased. A higher FEV1:FVC ratio was associated with lower hs-CRP levels in males.CONCLUSION: Higher hs-CRP levels were associated with decreased FEV1 and FVC in a general population of Korea. The FEV1:FVC ratio decreased with an increase in the hs-CRP level in males.

OBJECTIVES: Currently available interferon (IFN)-γ-release assays (IGRA) cannot discriminate active tuberculosis (TB) from latent TB infection (LTBI), and so have limited clinical utility for diagnosing active TB. Since numbers of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α-producing T cells are highly correlated with active TB, we hypothesized that detecting IFN-γ- and/or TNF-α-producing T cells would overcome this limitation of IGRA. This study evaluated the diagnostic performances of the IFN-γ and TNF-α dual release fluorospot assay for active TB. METHODS: Adult patients with suspected TB including recent TB exposers were prospectively enrolled over a 28-month period. In addition to the conventional IGRA test (i.e. QuantiFERON-In-Tube), a fluorospot assay for detecting IFN-γ- and TNF-α-producing T cells was performed. The final diagnoses were classified by clinical category. Patients with confirmed or probable TB were regarded as active TB, and patients with not active TB were further classified as having not active TB with and without LTBI, based on the QuantiFERON-In-Tube results. RESULTS: A total of 153 patients including 45 with active TB and 108 with not active TB (38 LTBI vs. 70 not LTBI) were finally analysed. The sensitivity and specificity of the QuantiFERON-In-Tube assay for active TB were 84% (95% confidence interval (CI), 70-93) and 70% (95% CI 61-79), respectively. The IFN-γ/TNF-α dual release assay by fluorospot had substantially higher diagnostic specificity (94%) for diagnosing active TB than the IFN-γ single release assay (72%, p < 0.001), without compromising sensitivity (84% vs. 89%, p 0.79). CONCLUSIONS: The fluorospot-based IFN-γ/TNF-α dual release assay appears to be a simple and useful test for diagnosing active TB.

Stress-related mucosal disease (SRMD), or stress ulceration, is a group of conditions ranging from stress-related superficial gastric mucosal damage to deep gastric ulcers that are primarily correlated with mucosal ischemia, and pharmacologic interventions that optimize tissue perfusion or preserve defensive mucus aim to decrease the occurrence of conditions, such as gastric acidity, or enhance gastric defenses. However, the identification of multifactorial pathogenesis may be effective in preventing SMRD, and the use of stress prophylaxis is generally preferred. Since threonine is a component in the polymerization and synthesis of gastric mucin and possibly enhanced defense actions and lignin may provide structural support for defense and antioxidative function, we hypothesized that dietary intake of threonine and/or lignin can enhance defense against SRMD. The water immersion-restraint stress (WIRS) was used in rats and additional groups were pretreated with threonine alone or the combination of threonine and lignin. Based on gross and microscopic evaluations, threonine alone or the combination of threonine and lignin, a natural antioxidant, significantly reduced the development of SRMD (P < 0.05). According to molecular explorations, the levels of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin (IL)-8, IL-6, IL-1ß, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interferon gamma (IFN-γ), all of which are mediators that play a significant role in controlling WIRS, significantly decreased in the groups pretreated with either threonine alone or the combination of threonine and lignin (P < 0.01). WIRS significantly increased apoptosis in the stomach. However, the apoptotic index significantly decreased with threonine pretreatment. According to periodic acid Schiff staining results, the expression of gastric mucin was significantly preserved in groups pretreated with threonine but remarkedly decreased in the WIRS group. The gastric heme oxygenase-1 levels significantly increased in the group treated with threonine. In conclusion, the dietary intake of threonine or the combination of threonine and lignin is effective in preventing SRMD.

Since 2011, 2% chlorhexidine in 70% isopropyl alcohol (2% chlorhexidine tincture) has been widely used in Korea. To investigate changes in chlorhexidine sensitivity of staphylococci causing central line-associated bloodstream infections, 264 blood culture isolates from adult patients treated in intensive care units of five university hospitals between 2008 and 2016 were analysed. We observed no significant changes in chlorhexidine minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations, or in the prevalence of resistance-associated genes before and after introduction of 2% chlorhexidine tincture. Thus, there was no evidence of increased resistance to chlorhexidine in staphylococci causing central line-associated bloodstream infections.

BACKGROUND: The mortality rate associated with human glufosinate poisoning is high. We evaluated the usefulness of serum ammonia and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) and acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) scores for early prediction of in-hospital mortality in glufosinate ammonium poisoning. METHODS: A prospectively collected pesticide poisoning registry at a single academic medical center was retrospectively analyzed. Data were collected from consecutive patients diagnosed with glufosinate ammonium poisoning between May 2007 and February 2018. The initial serum ammonia level was defined as the highest serum ammonia level measured within 12 h after emergency department (ED) arrival. The SOFA and APACHE II scores were calculated using data obtained within the first 12 h after ED arrival. The patients were divided into survivor and nonsurvivor groups by in-hospital death status. RESULTS: In total, 110 patients were included. Ten patients (9.1%) died in the hospital despite treatment. Median initial serum ammonia level was significantly higher in the nonsurvivor group than in the survivor group (219 (range: 158-792) versus 100.5 (range: 25-317) µg/dL, p < 0.001). Median SOFA and APACHE II scores in the survivor and nonsurvivor groups were 2 (range: 0-10) versus 5 (range: 1-8) (p = 0.044) and 7 (range: 0-28) versus 16 (range: 8-22) (p = 0.001), respectively. In the multiple logistic regression analysis, the initial serum ammonia level was the only independent predictor (cutoff value: 151 µg/dL). CONCLUSION: An initial serum ammonia level >151 µg/dL was an independent early predictor of in-hospital mortality in glufosinate ammonium poisoning.

Synthetic hydrogels are investigated extensively in tissue engineering for their tunable physicochemical properties but are bioinert and lack the tissue-specific cues to produce appropriate biological responses. To introduce tissue-specific biochemical cues to these hydrogels, we have developed a modular hydrogel cross-linker, poly(glycolic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(glycolic acid)-di(but-2-yne-1,4-dithiol) (PdBT), that can be functionalized with small peptide-based cues and large macromolecular cues simply by mixing PdBT in water with the appropriate biomolecules at room temperature. Cartilage- and bone-specific PdBT macromers were generated by functionalization with a cartilage-associated hydrophobic N-cadherin peptide, a hydrophilic bone morphogenetic protein peptide, and a cartilage-derived glycosaminoglycan, chondroitin sulfate. These biofunctionalized PdBT macromers can spontaneously cross-link polymers such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) to produce rapidly cross-linking, highly swollen, cytocompatible, and hydrolytically degradable hydrogels suitable for mesenchymal stem cell encapsulation. These favorable properties, combined with PdBT's modular design and ease of functionalization, establish strong potential for its usage in tissue engineering applications.
