BACKGROUND: Allergic asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease with a number of cytokines participating in its pathogenesis and progress. Interleukin (IL)-22, which is derived from lymphocytes, acts on epithelial cells and play a role in the chronic airway inflammation. However, the actual role of IL-22 in allergic asthma is still unclear. Therefore, we explored the effect of IL-22 on allergic airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma mouse model. METHODS: To evaluate the effect of IL-22 in an allergic asthma model, BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with OVA; then the recombinant mouse IL-22 was administered intranasally 24 h prior to each challenge. The IL-22 levels in lung homogenates and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. AHR was evaluated through indicators including airways resistance (Rrs), elastance (Ers) and compliance (Crs); the inflammatory cell infiltration was assessed by quantification of differential cells counts in BALF and lung tissues stained by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E); IL-22 specific receptors were determined by immunohistochemistry staining. RESULTS: The concentration of IL-22 was significantly elevated in the OVA-induced mice compared with the control mice in lung homogenates and BALF. In the OVA-induced mouse model, IL-22 administration could significantly attenuate AHR, including Rrs, Ers and Crs, decrease the proportion of eosinophils in BALF and reduce inflammatory cell infiltration around bronchi and their concomitant vessels, compared with the OVA-induced group. In addition, the expression of IL-22RA1 and IL-10RB in the lung tissues of OVA-induced mice was significantly increased compared with the control mice, while it was dramatically decreased after the treatment with IL-22, but not completely attenuated in the IL-22-treated mice when compared with the control mice. CONCLUSION: Interleukin-22 could play a protective role in an OVA-induced asthma model, by suppressing the inflammatory cell infiltration around bronchi and their concomitant vessels and airway hyperresponsiveness, which might associate with the expression of its heterodimer receptors. Thus, IL-22 administration might be an effective strategy to attenuate allergic airway inflammation.

Combined therapy provides a more effective method in the treatment of tumors and becomes a research hotspot. To improve treatment outcomes and reduce serious side effects, hydrogel-based local delivery was developed herein to form a drug depot in suit to eliminate tumors. Indocyanine green and imiquimod were coencapsulated in the novel temperature-sensitive chitosan hydrogel. After intratumoral injection of the hydrogel, indocyanine green that accumulated in the tumor area could induce thermal ablation of primary tumors under laser irradiation. In the presence of imiquimod, the immune effects increased the probability of complete ablation of primary tumors and inhibition of metastases. Combined with cyclophosphamide, the enhanced immunological responses would further inhibit tumors and prolong the survival time. In a word, this work offered an excellent local delivery platform that enabled a remarkable combined antitumor strategy and achieved synergistic therapeutic effects.

We model the observed smoking outcomes of an individual and her social contact - a spouse, friend, sibling, parent or adult child - as a simultaneous move game with complete information. We allow an individual's smoking behavior to depend on her previous behavior and carefully account for observed and unobserved heterogeneity. Our econometric model addresses simultaneity, homophily, health endogeneity, non-random attrition, and multiplicity of equilibria together. Using network data from the Framingham Heart Study, we find smaller social interaction effects among spouses and friends than Christakis and Fowler (2008) who pioneered such exploration with these data. We also find that social interaction impacts of the endogenous behaviors of siblings or a parent and an adult child are not statistically significant after disentangling them from homophily. In addition, we find that the effects of social contacts' cardiovascular disease shocks on individual smoking behavior are not statistically significant.

Background: Currently, biotherapy is mainly administered to treat patients with severe asthma with the Type 2 (T2) inflammation phenotype. The variability of T2 inflammatory markers remains poorly understood. Objective: We aimed to describe the individual distributions of different biomarkers at varying thresholds and their variation patterns in participants with severe asthma. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of participants who had completed 2 or more fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and peripheral blood eosinophil counts in our centre within 5 years. The individual distribution of biomarkers (blood or sputum eosinophils, FeNO, and serum total IgE) with repeated measurements at different thresholds was analysed. The varied patterns of biomarkers were analysed by cluster analysis. Results: A total of 241 eligible participants were screened. Through long-term longitudinal multiple measurements, we found that approximately 50% of severe asthmatics had blood eosinophil levels fluctuating around the threshold defined by biological agents. FeNO persisted at levels >19.5 ppb or 25 ppb in more than half of patients; about 30% of participants crossed this threshold. In our centre, 47.4% of participants consistently exceeded sputum eosinophils >3%, and 47.4% of patients crossed this threshold. Approximately 66.7% of participants had more than 50% alterations of serum total IgE, and 98.1% of participants continued to have IgE levels greater than 30 IU/mL. We used cluster analysis to classify variability and levels of FeNO and blood eosinophils and identified 4 patient clusters. Cluster 1 can be summarised as T2 severe asthma with low blood eosinophil levels and stability. Cluster 2 can be summarised as asthma with continuous increase and small fluctuations in various T2 inflammatory markers. Cluster 3 can be summarised as a non/low-T2 inflammatory phenotype. Cluster 4 can be summarised as a stable, moderate T2 inflammatory phenotype. Conclusion: We identified the distributions and variable patterns of the T2 inflammatory markers currently used to guide asthma biotherapy in clinical practice. The longitudinal comprehensive multiple assessments of T2 inflammatory markers provide support for initiating biologic therapy patients with severe asthma whose biomarker levels vary.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases worldwide. This study aimed to determine the updated prevalence of and risk factors for asthma among individuals aged 45 and older in mainland China. METHODS: The data for this study came from the fourth wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) conducted by the National School of Development of Peking University in 2018. The CHARLS is a nationally representative survey targeting populations aged 45 and over from 28 provinces/cities in mainland China. A representative sample of 19,816 participants was recruited for the study using a multistage stratified sampling method. The prevalence of asthma was determined across different characteristics. The potential risk factors were examined by multivariable logistic regressions. RESULTS: A total of 18,395 participants (8744 men and 9651 women) were eligible for the final data analysis. The estimated prevalence of asthma among Chinese people aged ≥ 45 years in 2018 was 2.16% (95% CI 1.96-2.38). The prevalence of asthma significantly differed according to race (P = 0.002), with an overall rate of 2.07% (95% CI 1.86-2.29) in Han paticipants and 3.32% (95% CI 2.50-4.38) in minority participants. Furthermore, the minority ethnicities (OR = 1.55 [95% CI 1.12-2.14], P = 0.008), older age (60-69 years group: OR = 1.85 [95% CI 1.17-2.92], P = 0.008; ≥ 70 years group: OR = 2.63 [95% CI 1.66-4.17], P < 0.001), an education level of middle school or below (middle-school education: OR = 1.88 [95% CI 1.15-3.05], P = 0.011; primary education: OR = 2.48 [95% CI 1.55-3.98], P < 0.001; literate: OR = 2.53 [95% Cl 1.57-4.07], P < 0.001; illiterate: OR = 2.78 [95% CI 1.72-4.49, P < 0.001]), smoking (OR = 1.37 [95% CI 1.11-1.68], P = 0.003), and residence in North (OR = 1.52 [95% CI 1.11-2.09], P = 0.01) or Northwest China (OR = 1.71 [95% CI 1.18-2.49], P = 0.005) were associated with prevalent asthma. CONCLUSIONS: Asthma is prevalent but underappreciated among middle-aged and elderly people in China. A number of risk factors were identified. These results can help to formulate correct prevention and treatment measures for asthma patients.

Radioactive iodine-125 (I-125) is the most widely used radioactive sealed source for interstitial permanent brachytherapy (BT). BT has the exceptional ability to deliver extremely high doses that external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) could never achieve within treated lesions, with the added benefit that doses drop off rapidly outside the target lesion by minimizing the exposure of uninvolved surrounding normal tissue. Spurred by multiple biological and technological advances, BT application has experienced substantial alteration over the past few decades. The procedure of I-125 radioactive seed implantation evolved from ultrasound guidance to computed tomography guidance. Compellingly, the creative introduction of 3D-printed individual templates, BT treatment planning systems, and artificial intelligence navigator systems remarkably increased the accuracy of I-125 BT and individualized I-125 ablative radiotherapy. Of note, utilizing I-125 to treat carcinoma in hollow cavity organs was enabled by the utility of self-expandable metal stents (SEMSs). Initially, I-125 BT was only used in the treatment of rare tumors. However, an increasing number of clinical trials upheld the efficacy and safety of I-125 BT in almost all tumors. Therefore, this study aims to summarize the recent advances of I-125 BT in cancer therapy, which cover experimental research to clinical investigations, including the development of novel techniques. This review also raises unanswered questions that may prompt future clinical trials and experimental work.

A systematic literature review to validate the conclusions with regard to stranded seeds versus loose seeds. Published data for this review were identified by searching the PubMed databases. PD90, PV100, PV150, UD30, and RV100 acquired during the perioperative period and the postoperative period were analyzed by meta-analysis. Based on these studies, in addition to the reduction of migration and displacement, stranded seeds had some dosimetric advantages, especially in dose homogeneity and coverage of target area due to its connection characteristics. We also noticed implanted seeds usually excessive both in stranded seeds group and loose seed group. Intraoperatively built custom links will prolong operation time, with the proficiency of technology, the prolonged time gradually decreases.

Asthma is driven by group 2 innate lymphoid cells, antigen-specific CD4+ T helper type 2 cells and their cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-13. IL-37 is decreased in asthma and negatively related to Th2 cytokines and other pro-inflammatory cytokines. Our study showed that IL-37 level in asthmatic peripheral blood mononuclear cells was lower than in healthy. Further, IL-37 was negatively correlated with exhaled nitric oxide, asthma control test score, atopy and rhinitis history in asthmatics. Then an OVA-induced asthma mice model treated with rhIL-37 was established. An antibody array was employed to uncover altered cytokines induced by IL-37 in mice lung tissue. 20 proteins differentially expressed after rhIL-37 treatment and five of them were validated in asthmatic peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Consistent with cytokine antibody array, CCL3, CCL4, CCL5 decreased after IL-37 administration. While CXCL9 and CXCL13 were no change. We concluded that IL-37 reduce asthmatic symptoms by inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokine such as CCL3, CCL4, CCL5.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) is transmitted to humans primarily by Aedes aegypti. Previous studies on Ae. aegypti from Jiegao (JG) and Mengding (MD) in Yunnan province, China have shown that these mosquitoes are able to transmit ZIKV to their offspring through vertical transmission, indicating that these two Ae. aegypti strains pose a potential risk for ZIKV transmission. However, the vector competence of these two Ae. aegypti strains to ZIKV has not been evaluated and the molecular mechanisms influencing vector competence are still unclear. METHODS: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from JG and MD were orally infected with ZIKV, and the infection rate (IR), dissemination rate (DR), transmission rate (TR) and transmission efficiency (TE) of these two mosquito strains were explored to evaluate their vector competence to ZIKV. On 2, 4 and 6 days post-infection (dpi), the small RNA profiles between ZIKV-infected and non-infected Ae. aegypti midgut and salivary gland tissues were compared to gain insights into the molecular interactions between ZIKV and Ae. aegypti. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the IR, DR, TR and TE between the two Ae. aegypti strains (P > 0.05). However, ZIKV RNA appeared 2 days earlier in saliva of the JG strain, which indicated a higher competence of the JG strain to transmit ZIKV. Significant differences in the microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles between ZIKV-infected and non-infected Ae. aegypti were found in the 2-dpi libraries of both the midgut and salivary gland tissues from the two strains. In addition, 27 and 74 miRNAs (|log2 fold change| > 2) were selected from the miRNA expression profiles of ZIKV-infected and non-infected midgut and salivary gland tissues from the JG and MD strains, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide novel insights into the ZIKV-mosquito interactions and build a foundation for future research on how miRNAs regulate the vector competence of mosquitoes to this arbovirus.

Angiogenesis is crucial for tissue damage repair in ischemic cardiovascular diseases. Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) acts as a vital mediator in angiogenesis. In this study, tetrandrine (Tet) was found from 23 herbal chemicals to increase VEGF-A mRNA expression in H9c2 cells and the effect was confirmed in freshly isolated neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. The effect of Tet on VEGF-A expression and the possible mechanism were investigated. Tet treatment increased de novo VEGF-A mRNA synthesis and did not affect VEGF-A mRNA stability. The circulating chromosome conformation capture (4C) experiments indicated that Tet enhanced VEGF-A transcription by targeting a regulatory element beyond the 2.6 kb region of the translation start site. Tet augmented the angiogenic activities of endothelial cells. It also enhanced blood flow restoration and capillary vessel density following ischemic limb injury associated with an escalation of VEGF-A expression. Moreover, in myocardial infarction (MI) model Tet treatment elevated neovascularization, reduced infarction size, and improved heart function via upregulating VEGF-A levels. Our results suggested that Tet increased VEGF-A transcription through a novel mechanism that likely involves a distant regulatory element and may be useful for therapeutic angiogenesis for ischemic diseases.

Faunal provincialism between the North and South parts of Eastern Asia is shown to have been in place since the late Eocene. This provincialism structured the mammalian dispersals across Eurasia for millions of years and provides insights into both palaeonvironments and palaeoclimate zonation. In addition, this study reveals the oldest record of a crown ruminant (Iberomeryx from Shinao, China). Ecologically, as well as economically, ruminant artiodactyls are one of the most important large mammal groups today. The revision of the ruminants from the Shinao Formation, from the Caijiachong marls and Xiaerhete, resulted in two new taxa and shows that the different provinces were populated by distinct taxa living in different environments, dominated by the monsoon in the South and drier conditions in the North. Evaluating this result in a Eurasian context demonstrates that the dispersals from Asia to Europe was complex. These results confirm that there were at least two dispersal events, distinct in space and time: the Grande-Coupure from Northern and Central Asia along the North ca. 34 Mya and the Bachitherium dispersal event from the Southern province along a southerly route ca. 31 Mya.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) with baseline ultrasound (B-US) in ureteral neoplasms. METHODS: Retrospective analysis, comprising clinical presentation, image appearances, and diagnostic results on B-ultrasound and CEUS, considering pathological result as a gold-standard, was conducted on the clinical information of 39 patients with ureteral neoplasms. CT urography was used to detect and confirm the presence of ureteral neoplasms. Both B-ultrasound and CEUS investigations of those 39 patients under study were performed by a senior radiologist. RESULTS: Pathological outcomes established 27 ureteral malignancies and 12 ureteral benignancies. Ureteral malignancies were observed to occur in older patients than benignancies (p = 0.002). Only the morphological indicator of the ureteric wall on B-ultrasound was different in ureteral malignancies and benignancies (p = 0.030). Tumors with hyperenhancement, larger width, and hyperenhanced ureteric wall were easily diagnosed as malignant on CEUS, whereas iso-/hypoenhanced, narrower, and iso-/hypoenhanced ureteric wall indicated benign tumors. Moreover, the lesion widths, enhanced morphologies of the ureteric wall, and the ureteral wall's linear boundaries on CEUS were different between high- and low-stage ureteral urothelial carcinomas (p = 0.012, 0.002, 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: The display of microvessels in ureteral neoplasms was significantly enhanced by CEUS, thus contributing to the differential diagnosis of ureteral neoplasms while assisting the staging of ureteral urothelial carcinoma. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: The imaging features of different ureteral neoplasms on CEUS were analyzed in this study. The diagnostic performances of CEUS and B-ultrasound in ureteral urothelial carcinomas were also explored.

Oroxylin A (OA) has been shown to simultaneously increase coronary flow and provide a strong anti-inflammatory effect. In this study, we described the angiogenic properties of OA. OA treatment accelerated perfusion recovery, reduced tissue injury, and promoted angiogenesis after hindlimb ischemia (HLI). In addition, OA regulated the secretion of multiple cytokines, including vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), angiopoietin-2 (ANG-2), fibroblast growth factor-basic (FGF-2), and platelet derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB). Specifically, those multiple cytokines were involved in cell migration, cell population proliferation, and angiogenesis. These effects were observed at 3, 7, and 14 days after HLI. In skeletal muscle cells, OA promoted the release of VEGFA and ANG-2. After OA treatment, the conditioned medium derived from skeletal muscle cells was found to significantly induce endothelial cell (EC) proliferation. OA also induced EC migration by activating the Ras homolog gene family member A (RhoA)/Rho-associated coiled-coil kinase 2 (ROCK-II) signaling pathway and the T-box20 (TBX20)/prokineticin 2 (PROK2) signaling pathway. In addition, OA was able to downregulate the number of macrophages and neutrophils, along with the secretion of interleukin-1ß, at 3 days after HLI. These results expanded current knowledge about the beneficial effects of OA in angiogenesis and blood flow recovery. This research could open new directions for the development of novel therapeutic intervention for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Access to nido-carborane site-selective B-N(sp3) coupling by photoredox catalysed B-H activation has been achieved for the first time, which leads to the synthesis of a series of nitrogen-containing nido-carboranes with moderate to good yields. This protocol is applicable to primary and secondary amines containing alkyl, or heteroaryl groups as well as sulfonamides. Furthermore, the open to air and metal-free conditions with excellent site-selectivity represent a significant improvement for B-H functionalization of nido-carboranes with organic functionalities.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) can remit as age increases. However, long-term follow-up studies evaluating disease evolution and related factors of persistence of early-onset AD are sparse. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the persistence of early-onset AD. In this prospective cohort study, 260 patients with onset of AD before age two years old were enrolled. Clinical examination was performed and a questionnaire survey completed at enrolment. In addition, the filaggrin gene (FLG) of all participants was sequenced to identify mutations within this gene. Patients were followed at age six and 12. The remission rate was 50.8% at age six and 70.3% at age 12. Persistent AD was associated with a higher SCORAD index at baseline (p < 0.001), a family history of asthma (p = 0.003) and food allergen sensitization (p = 0.033). However, the presence or absence of FLG mutation did not show any significant association with persistent AD. Prognostic factors for persistence of AD were analysed by logistic regression analysis. Disease severity according to SCORAD index at baseline (OR: 1.039; 95% CI: 1.018-1.059; p < 0.001) and family history of asthma (OR: 3.008; 95% CI: 1.297-7.007; p = 0.011) were risk factors that may predict persistent AD based on multivariate regression analysis. It is important to stratify early-onset AD according to severity and investigate family allergic history in order to establish appropriate individual management. Moreover, genetic factors other than FLG mutation may play more important roles in persistent early-onset AD.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a model to predict the risk of malignancy in solid renal parenchymal lesions based on the imaging features of combined conventional and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). METHODS: A retrospective review was performed among patients with focal solid renal parenchymal lesions on ultrasound images. Ultrasound features were characterized by two experienced radiologists independently. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the most relevant features and to estimate the risk of malignancy. Scoring and counting methods were developed based on the most relevant features. The diagnostic performance was evaluated by the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: A total of 519 renal lesions were included in this study. The conventional ultrasound features of diameter, echogenicity, hypoechoic rim and the CEUS feature of heterogeneity were identified as the most relevant features for prediction of malignancy. The sensitivity and specificity for the logistic regression model, the scoring method and the counting method were 95.3 and 93.4%, 93.8 and 87.8%, 88.8 and 93.9%, respectively. The logistic model had the best performance for diagnosing malignant renal lesions with AUC of 0.978, compared with the scoring method and the counting method with AUCs of 0.958 and 0.965. CONCLUSION: The combination of contrast-enhanced ultrasound with conventional ultrasound improved the diagnostic performance of solid renal lesions based on the logistic regression model. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: In this study, we revealed that the combination of CEUS and conventional ultrasound provided higher accuracy for diagnosing malignant renal tumors.

Guided by Basic Psychological Need Theory, we investigated the combined associations between need satisfaction and need frustration (i.e., need profiles) and their relations with theoretically relevant correlates including mindfulness, physical literacy, physical activity enjoyment, and physical activity. The participants were Singapore-based school students (N = 844, M age = 12.45, SDage = 1.99, boys = 53.1%) who completed a cross-sectional survey. The results of the latent profile analysis identified four distinct need profiles: profile 1-average satisfaction and frustration (n = 364, 44.1%); profile 2-low satisfaction (n = 251, 29.7%), above average frustration; profile 3-very high satisfaction, very low frustration (n = 144, 17.1%); and profile 4-high satisfaction, very high frustration (n = 85, 10.1%). Among these, profile 3 was the most adaptive one; it had the highest levels of mindfulness, physical literacy, physical activity enjoyment, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Experiences of need satisfaction countered the negative effects of need frustration on these correlates. These findings enhance our understanding of students' psychological need experiences and highlight the need for investigating the combined associations between need satisfaction and need frustration.

Background: Although positive Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) status has been validated as a prognostic marker in breast cancer, the interaction between immune cells and CTCs during the progress of Epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT), and the clinical implications of CTC-associated white blood cell clusters (CTC-WBC clusters) for metastatic breast cancer are largely uncharacterized. Methods: We optimized a filter-based method combined with an RNA in situ hybridization technique according to the epithelial- and mesenchymal-markers to analyze EMT in CTC-WBC clusters. Serial peripheral blood samples from 135 patients with Hormone receptor (HR)-positive/HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer receiving first-line chemotherapy with docetaxel plus capecitabine were prospectively collected until disease progression from Nov 2013 to March 2019. Follow-up data collection was conducted until July 2020. Results: A total of 452 blood samples at all time-points were collected and analyzed. Median age of the cohort was 51.0 years (range, 27 to 73 years), and most of them (76.3%) had visceral metastases. Median progression-free survival (PFS) was 10.6 months (95% CI, 8.8 to 12.3 months). The presence of EMT-like CTC-WBC clusters was more frequently evident among patients with simultaneous bone and lymph node metastases (87.5% vs 36.2%, P=0.006), whereas no associations were observed between CTC-WBC clusters and other clinicopathologic characteristics before chemotherapy. The patients with EMT-like CTC-WBC clusters tended to show a significantly increased number of total CTC count (median,19.0 vs 5.0, P<0.001). The patients with at least one detectable EMT-like CTC-WBC cluster at baseline were characterized by significantly worse PFS, when compared to the patients with no EMT-like CTC-WBC clusters detected (7.0 vs 10.7 months, P=0.023), and those with five or more epithelial-based CTCs detected per 5mL of peripheral blood (7.0 vs 12.7 months, P=0.014). However, the total CTC-WBC clusters were not correlated with patients' survival in the cohort (8.4 vs 10.6 months, P=0.561). Conclusions: Our data provide evidence that the emergence of CTC-WBC clusters underwent EMT before treatment is associated with significantly poorer PFS in HR-positive/HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer patients receiving docetaxel plus capecitabine, which may be used as a parameter to predict the clinical outcomes and a potential target for individualized therapy.

PURPOSE: We aimed to compare the diagnostic performance and interobserver variability in breast tumor classification with or without the aid of an innovative dual-mode artificial intelligence (AI) architecture, which can automatically integrate information from ultrasonography (US) and shear-wave elastography (SWE). METHODS: Diagnostic performance assessment was performed with a test subset, containing 599 images (from September 2018 to February 2019) from 91 patients including 64 benign and 27 malignant breast tumors. Six radiologists (three inexperienced, three experienced) were assigned to read images independently (independent diagnosis) and then make a secondary diagnosis with the knowledge of AI results. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, receiver-operator characteristics (ROC) curve analysis and Cohen's κ statistics were calculated. RESULTS: In the inexperienced radiologists' group, the average area under the ROC curve (AUC) for diagnostic performance increased from 0.722 to 0.765 (p = 0.050) with secondary diagnosis using US-mode and from 0.794 to 0.834 (p = 0.019) with secondary diagnosis using dual-mode compared with independent diagnosis. In the experienced radiologists' group, the average AUC for diagnostic performance was significantly higher with AI system using the US-mode (0.812 vs. 0.833, p = 0.039), but not for dual-mode (0.858 vs. 0.866, p = 0.458). Using the US-mode, interobserver agreement among all radiologists improved from fair to moderate (p = 0.003). Using the dual-mode, substantial agreement was seen among the experienced radiologists (0.65 to 0.74, p = 0.017) and all radiologists (0.62 to 0.73, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: AI assistance provides a more pronounced improvement in diagnostic performance for the inexperienced radiologists; meanwhile, the experienced radiologists benefit more from AI in reducing interobserver variability.
