RESUMO

Development of a functional sorbent for effective crude oil absorption is essential to address large-scale spilling incidents. Herein, we demonstrate a facile method for preparing a superhydrophobic and photothermal PDMS/CuS/PDA@MF sponge through sequential depositions of PDA, CuS nanoparticles, and a PDMS layer onto a melamine sponge. The optimized composite sponge exhibits a superhydrophobic surface property, high absorption capacity for oils, robust recycling, and excellent photothermal conversion performance. Under sunlight irradiation, the sponge can be rapidly heat up for effectively reducing the viscosity of the surrounding crude oil in order to enhance its fluidity. As a result, uptake of crude oil can be achieved continuously at approximately 5.3 g/min using a peristaltic pump. Overall, we believe that a simple fabrication method from low-cost reagents and excellent crude oil remediation performance render the PDMS/CuS/PDA@MF sponge as an excellent sorbent candidate for remediating crude oil spill.

PURPOSE: Pain is the leading cause for unplanned emergency department visits and readmissions after ureteroscopy (URS), making post-operative analgesic stewardship a priority given the current opioid epidemic. We conducted a double-blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT), with non-inferiority design, comparing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to opiates for postoperative pain control in patients undergoing URS for urolithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were randomized and blinded to either oxycodone (5mg) or ketorolac (10mg), taken as needed, with 3 non-blinded oxycodone rescue pills for breakthrough pain. Primary study outcome was visual analog scale pain score on post-operative days 1-5. Secondary outcomes included medication utilization, side effects, and Ureteral Stent Symptoms Questionnaire (USSQ) scores. RESULTS: Eighty-one patients were included (43 oxycodone, 38 ketorolac). The two groups had comparable patient, stone, and perioperative characteristics. No differences were found in post-operative pain scores, study medication or rescue pill usage, or side effects. Higher maximum pain scores on days 1-5 (p<0.05) and higher USSQ score (28.1 vs 21.7, p=0.045) correlated with analgesic usage, irrespective of treatment group. Patients receiving ketorolac reported significantly fewer days confined to bed (1.3±1.3 vs 2.3±2.6, p=0.02). There was no difference in unscheduled post-operative physician encounters. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first double-blinded RCT comparing NSAIDs and opiates post-URS and demonstrates non-inferiority of NSAIDs in pain control with similar efficacy, safety profile, physician contact and notably, earlier convalescence compared to the opioid group. This provides strong evidence against routine opioid use post-URS, justifying continued investigation into reducing post-operative opiate prescriptions.

Qianjinweijing Tang (QJWJ) is a classic traditional Chinese formula that is often used in the treatment of treat lung cancer (LC). However, the underlying cellular mechanisms of the anticancer effects of QJWJ remain unclear. Cell viability was determined by MTS assay and levels of apoptosis measured by flow cytometry. Animal experiments were conducted to determine the effects of QJWJ on tumor growth in vivo. We used a proteomics approach to study the effects of QJWJ on LC cells and applied bioinformatics analysis to identify differentially expressed proteins that were validated by western blotting. QJWJ inhibited the proliferation of LC cells and induced apoptosis. The tumor growth delay effects of QJWJ were confirmed in vivo. We identified 104 differentially expressed proteins following QJWJ treatments of which 45 proteins were upregulated and 59 were downregulated. The levels of differentially expressed proteins were validated by western blotting. Our study indicated that QJWJ has anticancer effects in vivo and in vitro and that these effects are mediated by modulating the expression of tumor-related proteins.

Low-viscosity UV-curable resins are widely used in industry as they allow for UV curing materials with reduced amounts of reactive diluents to adjust the viscosity. But their mechanical properties and waterproof performance after curing as UV coatings still need to be improved. Here, a series of low-viscosity bio-based UV-curable polyester methacrylates were synthesized through L-lactide (LA) andε-caprolactone (CL) monomers. The results show that the introduction of star-shaped structure and random copolymerization of LA and CL can effectively reduce the viscosity of the resin to 313 mPa · s and at the same time increase the double bond conversion rate and maintain good mechanical properties. The composite resin was prepared by blending the star-shaped low-viscosity polyester methacrylate resin with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), and the microstructure was characterized by XRD and TEM. The curing kinetics, mechanical properties, thermal properties and waterproof properties of the composite resin were further tested. When the mass fraction of CNCs is 2.5 wt%, the water absorption rate of the pine samples coated with UV-cured composite resin is reduced to 17%, which is 65% lower than that of the uncoated samples and 20% lower than that of the samples coated with resin without CNC. This article provides a feasible and effective method for improving the mechanical properties and waterproof performance of low-viscosity UV-curing resins.

Purification of insoluble emulsified oils and soluble organic pollutants from sewage has attracted tremendous attention in today's society. Herein, a stable and environmentally friendly nanofibrous membrane with hierarchical caterpillar-like structure was fabricated via in-situ hydrothermal growing the nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDHs) on tche polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofibers. The wrapped hydrophilic NiCo-LDHs constructed the hierarchical structure and endowed the membrane attractive superhydrophilicity (≈ 0°)/underwater superoleophobicity (≈ 161°) and enhanced oil-repellency performance. Meanwhile, the NiCo-LDH@PANI/oPAN NFMs can display the ultra-fast flux of SSEs (xylene/water emulsion, 4175 L m-2 h-1) and satisfactory separation efficiency (99.07%). Moreover, the introduction of positively charged NiCo-LDHs increased plentiful adsorption active sites for membranes, which is beneficial to demulsify ionic SSEs and adsorb organic pollutants. Finally, for simultaneous purification of complex sewage by the dead-end and cross-flow filtration experiment, the composite membrane both displayed splendid removal rate of oil (> 99.0%) and dyes (> 99.0%), robust regeneration recycle-ability and no secondary pollution. Hence, it is expected that such strategy of combining electrospun and chelating-assisted in-situ hydrothermal can provide a low energy consumption and high decontamination technology for severe environmental crisis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work is to study whether the active state and species of biological tissues can influence changes in their dielectric properties. METHODS: In this paper, the dielectric properties of liver, kidney and spleen tissues from human active, human inactive and animal tissues are measured in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 100 MHz. The four- and two-electrode methods are used to measure dielectric properties at different frequencies. Statistical analysis and the pattern recognition method are used to compare the dielectric properties of human active tissues, human inactive tissues, animal tissues and data provided by the IFAC database. RESULTS: The results show that the dielectric properties of human active tissues are significantly different from those of human inactive tissues and animal tissues, resulting in a great difference between the dielectric properties provided by the IFAC database and those of human active tissues. The dielectric properties of human active tissues can be identified by the pattern recognition method based on principal component analysis, which further proves that the dielectric properties of human active tissues cannot be replaced. CONCLUSION: The dielectric properties of biological tissues are closely related to the activity and species of tissues. The dielectric properties of human active tissues cannot be replaced by those of human cadaver tissues or animal tissues. SIGNIFICANCE: The significance of this study is suggesting that the IFAC database should be updated with the dielectric properties of human active tissues to provide accurate data for bioelectromagnetics research.

The protein leverage hypothesis predicts that low dietary protein should increase energy intake and cause adiposity. We designed 10 diets varying from 1% to 20% protein combined with either 60% or 20% fat. Contrasting the expectation, very low protein did not cause increased food intake. Although these mice had activated hunger signaling, they ate less food, resulting in decreased body weight and improved glucose tolerance but not increased frailty, even under 60% fat. Moreover, they did not show hyperphagia when returned to a 20% protein diet, which could be mimicked by treatment with rapamycin. Intracerebroventricular injection of AAV-S6K1 significantly blunted the decrease in both food intake and body weight in mice fed 1% protein, an effect not observed with inhibition of eIF2a, TRPML1, and Fgf21 signaling. Hence, the 1% protein diet induced decreased food intake and body weight via a mechanism partially dependent on hypothalamic mTOR signaling.

In recent years, single modality-based gait recognition has been extensively explored in the analysis of medical images or other sensory data, and it is recognized that each of the established approaches has different strengths and weaknesses. As an important motor symptom, gait disturbance is usually used for diagnosis and evaluation of diseases; moreover, the use of multimodality analysis of the patient's walking pattern compensates for the one-sidedness of single modality gait recognition methods that only learn gait changes in a single measurement dimension. The fusion of multiple measurement resources has demonstrated promising performance in the identification of gait patterns associated with individual diseases. In this article, as a useful tool, we propose a novel hybrid model to learn the gait differences between three neurodegenerative diseases, between patients with different severity levels of Parkinson's disease, and between healthy individuals and patients, by fusing and aggregating data from multiple sensors. A spatial feature extractor (SFE) is applied to generating representative features of images or signals. In order to capture temporal information from the two modality data, a new correlative memory neural network (CorrMNN) architecture is designed for extracting temporal features. Afterward, we embed a multiswitch discriminator to associate the observations with individual state estimations. Compared with several state-of-the-art techniques, our proposed framework shows more accurate classification results.

The epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) puts higher demands on critical care medicine. Lots of studies have been conducted to solve COVID-19-related problems. Therefore, we reviewed the annual progress for COVID-19-related issues including antivirals threapies, respiratory support and immunomodulatory therapies and other critical issues, including the effect of antibiotic on mitochondrial damage and its relationship with sepsis, the goal and direction of antimicrobial de-escalation, drug prophylaxis of constipation, bleeding in gastrointestinal disorders and management of critical illness in the informalization era and so on. We hope to provide reference for clinical and scientific research work of the intensivists.

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes in hemodynamics during the induction stage of systemic mild hypothermia therapy in neonates with moderate to severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). METHODS: A total of 21 neonates with HIE who underwent systemic mild hypothermia therapy in the Department of Neonatology, Dongguan Children's Hospital Affiliated to Guangdong Medical University, from July 2017 to April 2020 were enrolled. The rectal temperature of the neonates was lowered to 34℃ after 1-2 hours of induction and maintained at this level for 72 hours using a hypothermia blanket. The impedance method was used for noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring, and the changes in heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), cardiac index (CI), and total peripheral resistance (TPR) from the start of hypothermia induction to the achievement of target rectal temperature (34℃). Blood lactic acid (LAC) and resistance index (RI) of the middle cerebral artery were recorded simultaneously. RESULTS: The 21 neonates with HIE had a mean gestational age of (39.6±1.1) weeks, a mean birth weight of (3 439±517) g, and a mean 5-minute Apgar score of 6.8±2.0. From the start of hypothermia induction to the achievement of target rectal temperature (34℃), there were significant reductions in HR, CO, and CI (P < 0.05), while there was no significant change in SV and MAP (P > 0.05). There was a significant increase in TPR (P < 0.05) and a significant reduction in LAC (P < 0.05), while there was no significant change in RI (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The systemic mild hypothermia therapy may have a significant impact on hemodynamics in neonates with moderate to severe HIE, and continuous hemodynamic monitoring is required during the treatment.

BACKGROUND: Fc receptor-like (FCRL) molecules were considered to play a role in the pathogenesis of certain autoimmune diseases. Nonetheless, the clinical significance of FCRLs in IgA nephropathy (IgAN) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at investigating the expression levels of FCRLs molecules in IgAN patients and determining its relevance to disease activity. METHODS: The mRNA expression levels of FCRLs were determined in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of 42 IgAN patients and 48 healthy controls by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). FCRLs proteins expression in B cells of 25 IgAN patients, 14 patients with non-IgAN glomerulonephritis, and 29 healthy controls were detected by Flow cytometry. The Spearman correlation test was used to assess the correlation of FCRLs expression with clinical parameters of IgAN patients. RESULTS: Our results indicated significant down-regulation of FCRL2 and FCRL3 mRNA levels in IgAN patients compared to healthy subjects. Surface protein expression of FCRLs molecules confirmed the qRT-PCR results. But FCRL2 and FCRL3 protein levels did not correlate with clinicopathologic phenotypes of IgAN patients. However, we found a significant positively correlation of FCRL2 and FCRL3 mRNA expression with the core 1 ß1,3-galactosyltransferase (C1GALT1) and its molecular chaperone (Cosmc) mRNA levels in IgAN patients. CONCLUSIONS: FCRL2 and FCRL3 expression levels in IgAN patients are significantly decreased and correlated with CIGALT1 and Cosmc mRNA expression.

INTRODUCTION: Periostin, as an emerging biomarker, is involved in multiple steps in bone metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between periostin levels and bone mineral density as well as bone turnover markers in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional study that included 164 postmenopausal women with T2DM as study subjects and 32 age-matched nondiabetic postmenopausal women with normal bone mineral density (BMD) as healthy control subjects. A total of 164 subjects with T2DM were then divided into three groups according to BMD: the normal BMD group (n = 29), the osteopenia group (n = 70), and the osteoporosis group (n = 65). The clinical data of all subjects along with the relevant biochemical parameter data were collected. Plasma periostin was detected using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Plasma periostin levels were significantly increased in T2DM patients with normal BMD compared with healthy controls (p < 0.05). In the diabetic group, plasma periostin levels were significantly elevated with decreased BMD, were positively correlated with osteocalcin levels (r = 0.162, p = 0.039) and were inversely associated with femoral neck BMD (r = - 0.308, p < 0.001) and total femur BMD (r = - 0.295, p < 0.001). In the case of chronic complications, periostin levels were slightly increased in individuals with complications of diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and fracture (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The current study demonstrated that plasma periostin levels were significantly associated with BMD in patients with T2DM, and periostin might act as a novel biochemical marker of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The response to glucocorticoids treatment may be different between Covid-19 and SARS. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched studies on Medline, Embase, EBSCO, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, ICTRP from 2002 to October 7, 2020. We used fixed-effects and random-effects models to compute the risk ratio of death in the group receiving glucocorticoids treatment and the control group for COVID-19 and SARS, respectively. RESULTS: Ten trials and 71 observational studies, with a total of 45,935 patients, were identified. Glucocorticoids treatment, was associated with decreased all-cause mortality both in COVID-19 (risk ratio, 0.88; 95% confidence interval, 0.82 to 0.94; I2 = 26%) and SARS (0.48; 0.29 to 0.79; 10%), based on high quality evidence, as well as decreased all-cause mortality-including composite outcome of COVID-19 (0.89; 0.82 to 0.98; 0%). In subgroup analyses, all-cause mortality was significantly lower among COVID-19 patients being accompanied by severe ARDS but not mild ARDS, taking low-dose or pulse glucocorticoids, being critically severe but not only severe, being of critical severity and old but not young, being of critical severity and men but not women, non-early taking glucocorticoids, taking dexamethasone or methylprednisolone, and with the increased inflammatory state; but for SARS, lower mortality was observed among those who were taking medium-high dose glucocorticoids, being severe or critically severe, early taking glucocorticoids, and taking methylprednisolone or prednisolone. CONCLUSIONS: Glucocorticoids treatment reduced mortality in COVID-19 and SARS patients of critical severity; however, different curative effects existed between the two diseases among subpopulations, mainly regarding sex- and age-specific effects, optimal doses and use timing of glucocorticoids.

MAIN CONCLUSION: A physical map of Thinopyrum intermedium chromosome 7J was constructed using translocation mapping, and a new seedling purple coleoptile gene was mapped to the bin of FL 0.35-0.63 of 7JS. Thinopyrum intermedium (2n = 6x = 42, JJJsJsStSt), a wild relative of common wheat, harbors numerous beneficial genes for wheat improvement. Previous studies showed that wheat-Th. intermedium partial amphiploid TAF46 and its derived addition line L1 had a purple coleoptile, which was derived from Th. intermedium chromosome 7J. To identify and physically map the purple coleoptile gene, 12 wheat-Th. intermedium 7J translocation lines were analyzed by sequential multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (mc-FISH), PCR-based landmark unique gene (PLUG) and intron targeting (IT) markers. A physical map of the 7J chromosome was constructed, consisting of eight chromosomal bins with 89 markers. Seedling evaluation of the coleoptile colors of all tested materials indicated that the purple coleoptile gene was located to the bin with a fraction length (FL) of 0.35-0.63 on chromosome 7JS. Furthermore, based on the syntenic relationships between Th. intermedium and wheat chromosomes, we developed a new chromosome 7J-specific EST-PCR marker from the chromosomal region corresponding to the purple coleoptile gene through the Triticeae multi-omics database. The approach of designing chromosome-specific markers has facilitated fine mapping of the Thinopyrum-specific purple coleoptile gene, and these translocation lines will be valuable for studying the function of the purple coleoptile gene in anthocyanin biosynthesis.

With the fast emergence of serious antibiotic resistance and the lagged discovery of novel antibacterial drugs, phage therapy for pathogenic bacterial infections has acquired great attention in the clinics. However, development of therapeutic phages also faces tough challenges, such as laborious screening and time to generate effective phage drugs since each phage may only lyse a narrow scope of bacterial strains. Identifying highly effective phages with broad host ranges is crucial for improving phage therapy. Here, we isolated and characterized several lytic phages from various environments specific for Pseudomonas aeruginosa by testing their growth, invasion, host ranges, and potential for killing targeted bacteria. Importantly, we identified several therapeutic phages (HX1, PPY9, and TH15) with broad host ranges to lyse laboratory strains and clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa with multi-drug resistance (MDR) both in vitro and in mouse models. In addition, we analyzed critical genetic traits related to the high-level broad host coverages by genome sequencing and subsequent computational analysis against known phages. Collectively, our findings establish that these novel phages may have potential for further development as therapeutic options for patients who fail to respond to conventional treatments.IMPORTANCE Novel lytic phages isolated from various environmental settings were systematically characterized for their critical genetic traits, morphology structures, host ranges against laboratory strains and clinical multi-drug resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and antibacterial capacity both in vitro and in mouse models. First, we characterized the genetic traits and compared with other existing phages. Furthermore, we utilized acute pneumonia induced by laboratorial strain PAO1, and W19, an MDR clinical isolate and chronic pneumonia by agar beads laden with FDR1, a mucoid phenotype strain isolated from the sputum of a cystic fibrosis (CF) patient. Consequently, we found that these phages not only suppress bacteria in vitro but also significantly reduce the infection symptom and disease progression in vivo, including lowered bug burdens, inflammatory responses and lung injury in mice, suggesting that they may be further developed as therapeutic agents against MDR P. aeruginosa.

BACKGROUND: Rehospitalization is a major problem for end stage renal disease (ESRD) populations. However, researches on 30-day unexpected rehospitalzation of incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients were limited. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, risk factors and impact on outcomes of 30-day unexpected rehospitalization in incident PD patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. Patients who accepted PD catheter implantation in our centre from Jan 1, 2006 to Dec 31, 2013 and regular follow-up were included. The demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, and rehospitalization data were collected and analyzed. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality, and the secondary outcomes included cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and technical failure. RESULTS: Totally 1632 patients (46.9 ± 15.3 years old, 60.1% male, 25.6% with diabetes) were included. Among them, 149 (9.1%) had a 30-day unexpected rehospitalization after discharge. PD-related peritonitis (n = 48, 32.2%), catheter malfunction (n = 30, 20.1%) and severe fluid overload (n = 19, 12.8%) were the top three causes for the rehospitalization. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that length of index hospital stays [Odds ratio (OR) =1.02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00-1.03, P = 0.036) and hyponatremia (OR = 1.85, 95% CI 1.06-3.24, P = 0.031) were independently associated with the rehospitalization. Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that 30-day rehospitalization was an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality [Hazard ratio (HR) =1.52, 95% CI 1.07-2.16, P = 0.019) and CVD mortality (HR = 1.73, 95% CI 1.03-2.90, P = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of 30-day unexpected rehospitalization for incident PD patients in our centre was 9.1%. The top three causes for the rehospitalization were PD-related peritonitis, catheter malfunction and severe fluid overload. Thirty-day unexpected rehospitalization increased the risk of all-cause mortality and CVD mortality for PD patients.

OBJECTIVE: Some surgeons believe that dissection posterior to the right recurrent laryngeal nerve lymph node (PRRLN-LN) is unnecessary for the low metastasis rate and high complication risk. However, persistent metastatic lymph nodes may have a higher recurrence rate, surgical risk, and complications. Thus, it is important to distinguish patients who require PRRLN-LN dissection. To identify the risk factors for lymph nodes posterior to the right recurrent laryngeal nerve metastasis (LN-prRLN) and establish a scoring system to help determine whether PRRLN-LN dissection is required in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. METHODS: 821 participants were randomly allocated to the development and validation cohorts in a 2:1 ratio. A nomogram-based predictive model for LN-prRLN was established based on the risk factors identified in the development cohort. RESULTS: LN-prRLN was diagnosed pathologically in 124 of 821 patients (15.1%) from the entire cohort. Multivariate analysis identified age (odds ratio [OR], 0.964; 95% CI, 0.945-0.983; P < .001), tumor size (OR, 1.536; 95% CI, 1.135-2.079; P = .005), extrathyroidal extension (OR 2.271, 95% CI, 1.368-3.770; P = .002), clinically involved right central compartment lymph node metastasis (OR 1.643, 95% CI, 1.055-2.559; P = .028), and right lateral lymph node metastasis (OR 4.271, 95% CI, 2.325-7.844; P < .001) as the predictors of LN-prRLN. A risk model was established and well validated. Calibration curves to evaluate the nomogram in both the development and validation cohorts revealed a concordance index of 0.756 ± 0.058 and 0.745 ± 0.042, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our scoring system may be useful for helping the surgeons decide which patients should undergo the dissection of PRRLN-LN.

BACKGROUND: In the first year of dialysis, patients are vulnerable to cardiovascular disease (CVD) hospitalization, but knowledge regarding the risk factors and long-term outcomes of cardiovascular readmission within the first year after dialysis in incident continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients is limited. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in incident CAPD patients. The demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, and CVD readmission were collected and analyzed. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality, and the secondary outcomes included CVD mortality, infection-related mortality and technique failure. A logistic regression was used to identify the risk factors associated with CVD readmission within the first year after dialysis. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the association between CVD readmission and the outcomes. RESULTS: In total, 1589 peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients were included in this study, of whom 120 (7.6%) patients had at least one episode of CVD readmission within the first year after dialysis initiation. Advanced age, CVD history, and a lower level of serum albumin were independently associated with CVD readmission. CVD readmission within the first year after dialysis was significantly associated with all-cause (HR 2.66, 95%CI 1.91-3.70, p < 0.001) and CVD (HR 3.42, 95%CI 2.20-5.31, p < 0.001) mortality, but not infection-related mortality or technique failure, after adjusting for confounders. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that an advanced age, a history of CVD, and a lower level of serum albumin were independently associated with CVD readmission. Moreover, CVD readmission was associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in incident CAPD patients.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is that analyze the clinical characters of Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) with the de nove TCOF1 mutation and emphasize the genetic research result. METHODS: Genomic DNA from the proband and his parents were extracted from 200 to 400 µl of peripheral blood samples. A 4000 pathgenic genes diagnostic screening panel developed by our laboratory group was used for gene mutation screening. The panel covered the TCOF1 (NM_001135243.1), POLR1C (NM_203,290) and POLR1D (NM_015,972) genes associating with TCS. RESULTS: We reported a case of typical, complete syndrome with a nonsense mutation c.1622G > A (p.W541*) in exon 11 of TCOF1, who presents bilateral external ears abnormalities, atresia of external auditory canals, antimongoloid slant of the eyes, bilateral partial coloboma of the lateral part of the lower lids, a large and protruding nose, macrostomia, cleft palate and hair displacement anterior to the auricle. CONCLUSIONS: Our report expands the spectrum of known pathogenic TCOF1 variants associated with TCS in humans.TCOF1 deficiency may cause a severe neonatal presentation with birth defects.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have shown great application prospects as next-generation energy storage systems due to their high theoretical capacity and high energy density. However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is still hindered by several challenges, such as their sluggish sulfur redox kinetics and shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). To date, significant research has been focused on the confinement adsorption and catalytic conversion of LiPSs using theoretical or/and experimental methods. Among them, theoretical calculations are highly attractive to observe complex LiPS conversion reactions, which facilitate the rational design of S mediators for high-performance Li-S batteries. In this review, we summarize and discuss the recent advances in the adsorption and conversion of LiPSs from the viewpoint of theoretical calculations. Moreover, a set of theoretical principles to guide the screening of suitable host materials for Li-S batteries is presented and discussed. Finally, some personal insights about the future challenges and the focus of research in this field are presented, which will push a milestone step toward high-efficiency and long-life Li-S batteries.
