BACKGROUND: Research on the effect of acupuncture has been limited. Whether the effect of acupuncture is equivalent to placebo has been the focus of debate in this field. This study will explore the specific and non-specific effects of acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS AND DESIGN: Ninety participants diagnosed with KOA will be randomly divided into the acupuncture group, sham acupuncture group, and waiting list group in a ratio of 1:1:1. Except for the waiting list group, the other participants will receive acupuncture or sham acupuncture three sessions per week for 4 weeks respectively. The primary outcome will be the response rate which is defined on an individual basis as at least a 2-point decrease in the numerical rating scale (NRS) of pain at the end of intervention period compared with the baseline. fMRI scans will be performed at baseline and the end of the intervention period to examine the response of various brain regions. The secondary outcomes will include the Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), State-Trait Anxiety Scale-State Anxiety Subscale (STAI-S), and Stanford Expectations of Treatment Scale (SETS). Pearson's correlation coefficient will be performed to investigate the changes in brain activity and clinical variables. DISCUSSION: The results of our study will help to evaluate the specific and nonspecific effects of acupuncture combined with clinical and brain function changes based on KOA. This 16-week randomised controlled trial (8-week treatment followed by 8-week follow-up) evaluated the symptomatic improvement in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) on 3 sessions per week of acupuncture (TSWA) compared to 1 session per week of acupuncture (OSWA). Sixty participants were randomised to either the TSWA or the OSWA group in a 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome was response rate, defined as the percentage of participants achieving ≥2 points decrease on the numerical rating scale (NRS) and ≥6 points decrease in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) function score at week 8 compared with baseline. Additional outcomes included response rates at weeks 4 and 16, NRS, WOMAC, Patient Global Assessment (PGA), 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) and treatment credibility and expectancy. No significant difference was seen in response rate between TSWA and OSWA groups at week 8 (64.7% vs. 50.0%; difference, 14.7 percentage points [95% CI, -10.1 to 39.4 percentage points], P=0.435). At weeks 4 and 16, the TSWA group had higher response rates than OSWA group (week-4: difference, 44.7 percentage points [95% CI, 23.2 to 66.1 percentage points], P=0.001; week-16: difference, 46.0 percentage points [95% CI, 24.4 to 67.6 percentage points], P<0.001). Participants in TSWA group experienced significantly greater improvements in NRS, WOMAC function and PGA than OSWA group. There were no significant between-group differences in WOMAC stiffness and SF-12. In summary, TSWA immediately improved knee pain and dysfunction compared with OSWA. In addition, the benefit of TSWA persists throughout follow-up.

Chronic shoulder pain (CSP) is the third most common musculoskeletal problem. For maximum treatment effectiveness, most acupuncturists usually choose acupoint in the nonpainful side, to alleviate pain or improve shoulder function. This method is named opposite needling, which means acupuncture points on the right side are selected for diseases on the left side and vice versa. However, the underlying neural mechanisms related to treatment are currently unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine whether different mechanisms were observed with contralateral and ipsilateral acupuncture at Tiaokou (ST 38) in patients with unilateral CSP. Twenty-four patients were randomized to the contralateral acupuncture group (contra-group) and the ipsilateral acupuncture group (ipsi-group). The patients received one acupuncture treatment session at ST 38 on the nonpainful or painful sides, respectively. Before and after acupuncture treatment, they underwent functional magnetic resonance scanning. The treatment-related changes in degree centrality (DC) maps were compared between the two groups. We found alleviated pain and improved shoulder function in both groups, but better shoulder functional improvement was observed in the contra-group. Increased DC in the anterior/paracingulate cortex and decreased DC in bilateral postcentral gyri were found in the contra-group, while decreased DC in the bilateral cerebellum and right thalamus was observed in the ipsi-group. Furthermore, the DC value in the bilateral anterior/paracingulate cortex was positively correlated with the treatment-related change in the Constant-Murley score. The current study reveals different changes of DC patterns after acupuncture at contralateral or ipsilateral ST 38 in patients with CSP. Our findings support the hypothesis of acupoint specificity and provide the evidence for acupuncturists to select acupoints for CSP.

Human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) possess the capacity to differentiate into odontoblast-like cells in response to exogenous stimuli. Histone methylation is one of the most robust epigenetic marks and is essential for the regulation of multiple cellular processes. Previous studies have shown that histone methyltransferases (HMTs) and histone demethylases (HDMs) are crucial for the osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow, adipose tissue, and tooth tissue. However, little is known about the role of histone methylation in hDPC differentiation. Here, the expression levels of HMTs and HDMs were profiled in hDPCs undergoing odontogenic induction. Among several differentially expressed enzymes, HDM KDM5A demonstrated significantly enhanced expression during cytodifferentiation. Furthermore, KDM5A expression increased during early passages and in a time-dependent manner during odontogenic induction. Using a shRNA-expressing lentivirus, KDM5A was knocked down in hDPCs. KDM5A depletion resulted in greater alkaline phosphatase activity and more mineral deposition formation. Meanwhile, the expression levels of the odontogenic markers DMP1, DSPP, OSX, and OCN were increased by KDM5A knockdown. As a histone demethylase specific for tri- and dimethylated histone H3 at lysine 4 (H3K4me3/me2), KDM5A deficiency led to a significant increment in total H3K4me3 levels, whereas no significant difference was found for H3K4 me2. H3K4me3 levels on the promoters of the odontogenic markers increased after KDM5A knockdown in hDPCs. These results demonstrated that KDM5A is present in hDPCs and inhibits the odontogenic differentiation potentiality of hDPCs by removing H3K4me3 from specific gene promoters, suggesting that KDM5A-dependent histone demethylation may play an important role in reparative dentinogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Acute vasoreactivity testing (AVT) which reflects the compliance of the pulmonary vascular bed has been proven to be of prognostic value. The purpose of the present study is to explore the sex differences of hemodynamics during the AVT and their impact on event-free survival in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). METHODS: Eighty-six patients underwent a right heart catheterization and AVT at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital from February 2009 to February 2018. Univariate and multiple stepwise regression analysis were performed to determine the predictors of independent event-free survival, and receiver operating characteristic curve was plotted to determine the cut-off value of independent parameters in CTEPH. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in both demographics and hemodynamics between male and female patients with CTEPH. Except ΔPVR/PVR showed a significantly higher difference in female than male patients (P = 0.034). Male patients had higher mRAP of pre- and post-AVT than female patients in the event-free subgroup, while, female patients showed higher PVR of pre-AVT than male patients in the event subgroup (P < 0.05). The mRAP and SvO2 were independent predictors of event-free survival in female patients both before and after the AVT, whereas ΔSvO2 was an independent predictor of event-free survival in male patients. CONCLUSION: Hemodynamics during the AVT varied between male and female patients with CTEPH. Both sexes displayed unique hemodynamic responses that were independently able to predict event-free survival. Therefore, better estimates of prognosis in CTEPH can be made when sex differences are also taken into consideration.

Chemical pollution in the plastic debris is an increasing global concern as most pollutants might transfer from the environment to living organisms via plastic debris. In this study, biocides in the plastic debris floating on the surface water of the Pearl River system were investigated. The abundances of large plastic debris and microplastics in the surface water were 0.07 ± 0.13 and 0.94 ± 1.87 items/m3, respectively. Totally, 15 and 16 out of 19 biocides were detected in the large plastic debris and microplastics, with the concentration of each biocide in the ranges of 22.6-2460 ng/g and 16.9-2890 ng/g, respectively. Meanwhile, the concentration ranges of the detected biocides were 0.01-215 ng/L in surface water. Triclosan, triclocarban, methylparaben, and N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) were the frequently detected compounds in the plastic samples and surface water. The partition coefficients (Kd) of biocides between the plastic debris and surface water showed a weak positive correlation with Kow values. Biocides were also detected on the natural floats (tree leaves and branches) at concentrations of 13.7-786 ng/g. The annual mass load of biocides in plastic debris at each site was up to 265 g/y, thereby suggesting that plastic debris might be an important carrier for the emerging contaminants, such as biocides.

Long noncoding RNA HOXB cluster antisense RNA 3 (HOXB-AS3) has been reported to be dysregulated in several tumors. The present study mainly aims at the investigation in how HOXB-AS3 works in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and to elucidate the mechanism involved. Initially, 'GEPIA' was mined to examine the differential expression levels and prognostic value of HOXB-AS3 in EOC patients. The expression of HOXB-AS3 in EOC cell lines and patient specimens was examined with quantitative RT-PCR. Simultaneously, the correlation of HOXB-AS3 expression with a variety of clinicopathological factors and patient survival was analyzed. MTT, colony formation and flow cytometry assays were performed to analyze the cell viability of EOC cells. Wound healing and Transwell assays were carried out to determine EOC cells' capability of migrating and invading. The impact of HOXB-AS3 on EMT and Wnt/ß-catenin signaling was explored with the approach of Western blot. We found that in both EOC cell lines and tissues, HOXB-AS3 expression was significantly up-regulated, and its high expression was an independent prognostic marker of poor outcome for EOC patients. In vitro loss-of-function assays revealed that HOXB-AS3 knockdown inhibited EOC cells proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT, and induced EOC cells' apoptosis. Furthermore, we validated that down-regulated HOXB-AS3 attenuated the activity of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling to suppress the invasion, migration and proliferation of EOC cells. To sum up, the present study came up with the conclusion that HOXB-AS3 acts as an oncogenic gene in EOC progression through HOXB-AS3-Wnt/ß-catenin signaling regulation, providing a novel insight into EOC tumorigenesis.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is widely used for knee osteoarthritis (KOA), despite contradictory evidence. This study is designed to determine the efficacy of electro-acupuncture and manual acupuncture versus sham acupuncture for KOA. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a multi-center three-arm randomized controlled trial. It will enroll 480 participants with KOA in China. Participants will be randomly assigned 1:1:1 to receive 24 sessions of electro-acupuncture, manual acupuncture, or sham acupuncture over 8 weeks. The primary outcome is the response rate, which is the proportion of patients who achieve the minimal clinically important improvement in pain and function at 8 weeks. The primary outcome will be analyzed using the Z-test with the intention-to-treat set. Secondary outcomes include pain, function, global patient assessment, and quality of life. Full details of the statistical analysis plan for the primary and secondary outcomes will be described in this article. The statistical analysis plan was written and submitted without knowledge of the study data. DISCUSSION: The data will be analyzed according to this pre-specified statistical analysis plan to avoid data-driven analysis and to enhance the transparency of the trial. The aim of the trial is to provide high-quality evidence on the efficacy of acupuncture for KOA. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinicaltrials.gov, NCT03366363 . Registered on 20 November 2017.

Background: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have uncovered the disruptions of functional brain networks in primary insomnia (PI) patients. However, the etiology and pathogenesis underlying this disorder remains ambiguous, and the insomnia related symptoms are influenced by a complex network organization in the brain. The purpose of this study was to explore the abnormal intrinsic functional hubs in PI patients using a voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) analysis and seed-based functional connectivity (FC) approach. Methods: A total of 26 PI patients and 28 healthy controls were enrolled, and they underwent resting-state fMRI. Degree centrality was measured across the whole brain, and group differences in DC were compared. The peak points, which significantly altered DC between the two groups, were defined as the seed regions and were further used to calculate FC of the whole brain. Later, correlation analyses were performed between the changes in brain function and clinical features. Results: Primary insomnia patients showed DC values lower than healthy controls in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and showed a higher DC value in the right precuneus. The seed-based analyses demonstrated decreased FC between the left MTG and the left posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and decreased FC was observed between the right precuneus and the right lateral occipital cortex. Reduced DC in the left IFG and decreased FC in the left PCC were positively correlated with the Pittsburgh sleep quality index and the insomnia severity index. Conclusions: This study revealed that PI patients exhibited abnormal intrinsic functional hubs in the left IFG, MTG, and the right precuneus, as well as abnormal seed-based FC in these hubs. These results contribute to better understanding of how brain function influences the symptoms of PI.

Objective Clinical sepsis-associated biomarkers were utilized in a cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) septic mouse model to provide a reference for investigating pathophysiological mechanisms and evaluating novel therapeutic interventions for sepsis. Methods Sepsis in mice was induced by CLP, and clinical biomarkers were evaluated (survival rate, blood physiological and biochemical indices, cytokines, hepatorenal function parameters, and blood coagulation). Results The mortality rate was >70%. The body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate decreased within 48 h. Low lactic acid was found at 8 h. The CLP mice showed typical inflammatory symptoms with decreased white blood cells and procalcitonin and increased levels of soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-α, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, MIP-1ß, and MIP-2. The platelet count and activated partial thromboplastin time significantly decreased, and the prothrombin time and prothrombin time-international normalized ratio markedly increased. Phenotypes of multiple organ dysfunction were found in the CLP model, including increased liver alanine aminotransferase and aspartate transaminase; significantly reduced total protein, globulin, and serum albumin; increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine; and decreased blood glucose. Conclusion The clinical features of the CLP mouse model were similar to those of human patients with sepsis.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the influence of light intensity and water content of medium on the total dendrobine of Dendrobium nobile (D. nobile). METHOD: The principal component analysis combined with total dendrobine accumulation was conducted to assess the yield and quality of D. nobile in all treatments. In the experiment, D. nobile plants were cultivated in greenhouse as tested materials, and complete test of 9 treatments was adopted with relative light intensities 75.02%, 39.74%, 29.93% and relative water content of medium 50%, 65%, 80%. The plants were treated in June and harvested till December. Indexes including agronomic traits, fresh weight and dry weight of stem and leaf, ash content, extract, and dendrobine were measured. RESULTS: Under the light intensity treatments of 75.02% with 50%, 65%, 80% water content of medium, the basal stems of plants were comparatively thicker with more leaves, and the fresh weight and dry weight of stems and leaves were significantly higher than other 6 treatments. Leaves in all treatments contained dendrobine. Under the light intensity treatments of 75.02% with 50%, 65%, 80% water content of medium, dendrobine content of leaves was lower while dendrobine contents of other treatments were more than 0.60%. After comprehensive assessment through the principal component analysis and total dendrobine accumulation, the results showed that 3 treatments with relative light intensity of 75.02% ranked the top three. CONCLUSIONS: In brief, the moderately strong light intensity and water content of medium from low to medium can facilitate the growth and yield of D. nobile plants, while light intensity from moderately weak to weak can enhance the dendrobine content.

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of metal nanoparticles exhibits quantum behaviors as the size decreases owing to the transitions of quantized conduction electrons, but most studies are limited to the monotonous SPR blue-shift caused by off-resonant transitions. Here, we demonstrate the nonmonotonous SPR red-shift caused by resonant electron transitions and photocatalytic activity enhanced by the quantum plasmon resonance of colloidal gold nanoparticles. A maximal SPR wavelength and the largest photocatalytic activity are observed in the quantum regime for the first time for the gold nanoparticles with a diameter of 3.6 nm. Theoretical analysis based on a quantum-corrected model reveals the evolution of SPR with quantized electron transitions and well explains the nonmonotonous size-dependencies of the SPR wavelength and absorption efficiency. These findings have profound implications for the understanding of the quantum nature of the SPR of metal nanoparticles and their applications in areas ranging from photophysics to photochemistry.

Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium (S. typhimurium) is globally distributed and causes massive morbidity and mortality in humans and animals. S. typhimurium carries Salmonella plasmid virulence (spv) locus, which is highly conserved and closely related to bacterial pathogenicity, while its exact role in host immune responses during infection remains to be elucidated. To counteract the invaders, the host has evolved numerous strategies, among which the innate immunity and autophagy act as the first defense. Recently, zebrafish has been universally accepted as a valuable and powerful vertebrate model in analyzing bacteria-host interactions. To investigate whether spv locus enhances the virulence of Salmonella by exerting an effect on the host early defense, zebrafish larvae were employed in this study. LD50 of S. typhimurium to zebrafish larvae and bacterial dissemination were analyzed. Sudan black B and neutral red staining were performed to detect the responses of neutrophils and macrophages to Salmonella infection. Autophagy agonist Torin1 and inhibitor Chloroquine were used to interfere in autophagic flux, and the protein level of Lc3 and p62 were measured by western blotting. Results indicated that spv locus could decrease the LD50 of S. typhimurium to zebrafish larvae, accelerate the reproduction and dissemination of bacteria by inhibiting the function of neutrophils and macrophages. Moreover, spv locus restrained the formation of autophagosomes in the earlier stage of autophagy. These findings suggested the virulence of spv locus involving in suppressing host innate immune responses for the first time, which shed new light on the role of spv operon in Salmonella pathogenicity.

Objective: To study the effects of different plant density and harvest time on the yield and quality of Miao medicine Blumea balsamifera, in order to provide a theoretical basis for Good Agriculture Practice( GAP). Methods: Two factors trails were used to research the influence of plant density and harvest time on the yield and quality of Blumea balsamifera. The plant density were located at 50 cm × 90 cm,50 cm × 60 cm,50 cm × 30 cm and 30 cm × 30 cm, and the harvest time were set up at mid-October, mid-November and mid-December. The experiments were designed with randomized block design. Results: Yield and quality were both affected by the plant density and harvest time. Yield per unit area and volatile oil yield per unit area were increased significantly with the increasing of plant density. Yield per unit area and volatile oil yield per unit area were peaked at the plant density of 111 112 plants / hm~2 which could obtain high-yield at the mid-December, which were 1 546. 68 kg / hm~2 and 96. 6 L / hm~2,respectively. The content of total flavonoids were peaked at the plant density of 22 223 plants / hm~2 and 111 112 plants / hm~2,which were 2. 50 and 2. 53 mg/g,respectively. Harvest time had no significant effect on the flavonoids content. Conclusion: The suitable plant density of transplanted root tillers of Blumea balsamifera is 111 112 plants / hm~2 and the optimum harvest time is December.

The carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval), is a major agriculture pest. It can be found worldwide, has an extensive host plant range, and has shown resistance to pesticides. Organophosphate and carbamate insecticides account for more than one-third of all insecticide sales. Insecticide resistance and the toxicity of organophosphate and carbamate insecticides to mammals have become a growing concern. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is the major targeted enzyme of organophosphate and carbamate insecticides. In this study, we fully cloned, sequenced and characterized the ace1 gene of T. cinnabarinus, and identified the differences between T. cinnabarinus AChE1, Tetranychus urticae Koch AChE1, and human AChE1. Resistance-associated target-site mutations were displayed by comparing the AChE amino acid sequences and their AChE three-dimensional (3D) structures of the insecticide-susceptible strains of T. cinnabarinus and T. urticae to that of a T. urticae-resistant strain. We identified variation in the active-site gorge and the sites interacting with gorge residues by comparing AChE1 3D structures of T. cinnabarinus, T. urticae, and humans, though their 3D structures were similar. Furthermore, the expression profile of T. cinnabarinus AChE, at the different developmental stages, was determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction; the transcript levels of AChE were higher in the larvae stage than in other stages. The changes in AChE expression between different developmental stages may be related to their growth habits and metabolism characteristics. This study may offer new insights into the problems of insecticide resistance and insecticide toxicity of nontarget species.

OBJECTIVE: To study the content of mineral elements and the principal components in Gastrodia elata. METHOD: Mineral elements were determined by ICP and the data was analyzed by SPSS. RESULT: K element has the highest content-and the average content was 15.31 g x kg(-1). The average content of N element was 8.99 g x kg(-1), followed by K element. The coefficient of variation of K and N was small, but the Mn was the biggest with 51.39%. The highly significant positive correlation was found among N, P and K . Three principal components were selected by principal components analysis to evaluate the quality of G. elata. P, B, N, K, Cu, Mn, Fe and Mg were the characteristic elements of G. elata. CONCLUSION: The content of K and N elements was higher and relatively stable. The variation of Mn content was biggest. The quality of G. elata in Guizhou and Yunnan was better from the perspective of mineral elements.

OBJECTIVE: Combination of different planting direction and layer were set to choose the best technology of cultivation of Gastrodia elata f. elata. METHODS: To improve the yield and quality of Gastrodia elata f. elata, randomized block design experiments were carried out to investigate the yield and quality, and to analyze their economic effectiveness in bionic wild cultivation. RESULTS: Length, width, thickness and weight of southern direction's Gastrodia elata f. elata developed better than the northeast direction. The three planting layer levels on growth effect of Gastrodia elata f. elata was the 3rd layer > the 2nd layer > the 1st layer. In six treatments, combination of southern direction-the 3rd layer was the best technology of cultivation of Gastrodia elata f. elata, which had the best growth condition, the highest yield significantly higher than other treatments, and the best economic benefits. CONCLUSION: Southern direction associated with the 3rd layer is the best combination to planting Gastrodia elata f. elata in bionic wild cultivation. The planting ways not only improve the yield and quality, but also save land.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of amblyopia and strabismus in 7th-grade junior high school students in central China. METHODS: Using stratified cluster sampling, 2363 7th-grade students were recruited from four junior high schools in Anyang city into the cross-sectional Anyang Childhood Eye Study (ACES). All students underwent visual acuity (VA), cycloplegic autorefraction, cover test, and ocular movement examinations. Uncorrected VA and best-corrected VA (BCVA) were measured with a logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) chart. Cycloplegic autorefraction was performed after administration of 1.0% cyclopentolate and Mydrin-P. Strabismus was defined as heterotropia at near or distance fixation. Amblyopia was defined as BCVA ≤ 0.1 logMAR units in one or both eyes, without ocular pathology in either eye. RESULTS: Of the 2363 eligible students, 2260 (95.6%) completed all examinations. The mean age of the students was 12.4 ± 0.6 years. Amblyopia was present in 52 students (2.5%), of whom 33 (63.5%) had unilateral and 19 (36.6%) had bilateral amblyopia. Of those with unilateral amblyopia, 18 (54.5 %) had anisometropia and 7 (21.2%) had strabismus. Of those with bilateral amblyopia, 6 (31.6%) had significant refractive error. Strabismus was present in 108 students (5.0%), of whom 2 (1.9%) had esotropia, 102 (94.4%) had exotropia, 3 (2.8%) had vertical strabismus, and 1 (0.9%) had microstrabismus. Of the 108 students with strabismus, 9 (8.3%) had amblyopia. CONCLUSION: The cross-sectional ACES which examined the prevalence of amblyopia and strabismus in 7th-grade students in central China revealed the prevalence of strabismus, particularly the proportion of exotropia, to be higher than previously reported.

In order to get to know the imitation of wild Gastrodia elata in life history and phenology period, by G. elata f. elata forest wild simulated cultivation in Dafang county, Guizhou province, observing and recording its morphological characteristics of each growth and development stage. This experiment summarized the law of its life history over 24 months, amplified the characteristics of each 5 phenology periods over the sexual and asexual reproduction of wild simulated cultivated G. elata f. elata in Guizhou. Which the results could clear the process of wild simulated cultivated G. elata f. elata in Guizhou, and provide a theoretical support for the standard technical of the simulated wild G. elata.

BACKGROUND: Earlier diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia are associated with improved visual outcomes. This study reports the prevalence of amblyopia and associated factors in year 1 primary school students in central China. METHODS: The school-based, cross-sectional study involved 3,112 year 1 primary school students . All the participants underwent a comprehensive eye examinations including cycloplegic refraction, cover test and ocular movement examinations. The unaided and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was recorded. Unilateral amblyopia was defined as a 2-line interocular difference with BCVA ≤ 20/32 (≥ logMar 0.2) in the worse eye and with coexisting anisometropia (≥ 1.00 D SE for hyperopia, ≥ 3.00 D SE for myopia, or ≥ 1.50 D for astigmatism), strabismus or past or present visual axis obstruction. Bilateral amblyopia was defined as BCVA in both eyes<20/40 (> logMar 0.3), with coexisting hyperopia ≥ 4 D SE, myopia ≤ -6 D SE, or astigmatism ≥ 2.5 D, or past or present visual axis obstruction. RESULTS: Out of the 3,112 eligible students, 2,893 (93.0 %) students completed the examinations. The average age of the students was 7.1 ± 0.4 (mean ± standard deviation SD) years old. The prevalence of amblyopia was 1.0 % (95 % confidence interval [CI], 0.6 %-1.3 %) with no difference between the sexes (P = 0.88). Of the 27 amblyopic students, unilateral amblyopia was found in 18 (66.7 %) students, and bilateral amblyopia in 9 (33.3 %) students. Of 18 unilateral amblyopia, 13 were anisometropic amblyopia, 4 were strabismus amblyopia, 1 was mixed amblyopia. Of 9 bilateral amblyopia, 7 were isoametropic amblyopia, 2 were stimulus deprivation. The mean corrected VA of the amblyopic eyes was 30.50 logMAR letters (Snellen VA equivalent 4/12.6), and the range was 5 to 45 logMAR letters (Snellen VA equivalent 4/40-4/6.3). Most amblyopic eyes (38.9 %) were significantly hyperopic (spherical equivalent ≥ +3.00 D); 25.0 % were myopic. In addition, 58 (2.1 %) students had a previous amblyopia history of amblyopia that was not corroborated in this study. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows a relatively low prevalence of amblyopia (1.0 %) in year 1 students in central China. Amblyopia is usually caused by abnormal refractive error.
