RESUMO

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been heralded as promising energy storage materials with advantages such as chemical flexibility, porous structure and environmentally friendliness. Herein, we synthesized a novel conjugated microporous polymer by integrating triazine, thiophene and benzothiadiazole into a polymer skeleton and investigated the Li + ions storage performance for the as-synthesized polymer anode in Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Benefiting from the inherent large surface area, plentiful redox-active units and the hierarchical porous structure, the polymer anode delivers a high Li + ions storage capacity up to 1599 mAh g - 1 at a current rate of 50 mA g - 1 with an excellent rate behavior (363 mAh g - 1 at 5 A g - 1 ), and a long-term cyclability of 326 mAh g - 1 over 1500 cycles at 5 A g - 1 , implying that the newly developed polymer anode offers a great prospect for the next-generation LIBs.

There is an increasing demand for effective noninvasive diagnosis against common pulmonary diseases, which are rising sharply due to the serious air pollution. Human neutrophil elastase (HNE), a typical protease highly involved in pulmonary inflammatory diseases and lung cancer, is a potential predictor for disease progression. Currently, few of the HNE-targeting probes are applicable in vivo due to the limitation in sensitivity and biocompatibility. Herein, we reported the achievement of in vitro detection and in vivo imaging of HNE by incorporating the HNE-specific peptide substrate, quantum dots (QDs), and organic dyes into the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system. The refined nanoprobe, termed QDP, could specifically measure the HNE with excellent sensitivity of 7.15 pM in aqueous solution and successfully image the endogenous and exogenous HNE in living cells. In addition, this nanoprobe enabled HNE imaging in mouse models of lung cancer and acute lung injury, and the HNE activity at high temporal and spatial resolution was continuously monitored. Most importantly, QDP successfully discriminated the serums of patients with lung diseases from those of the healthy controls based on the HNE activity determination. Overall, this study demonstrates the advantages of a FRET-system-based nanoprobe in imaging performance and provides an applicable tool for in vivo HNE detection and pulmonary disease diagnosis.

PURPOSE: To explore the correlation between dietary nutrient intake and PG-SGA score in patients with oral cancers before radiotherapy. METHODS: Sixty-five patients with oral cancers treated in Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital were selected. The 72-hour dietary survey method was used to understand the food intake of the patients. PG-SGA was used to make quantitative scoring of the nutritional status of the patients. SPSS 23.0 software package was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The number of severe malnutrition cases in male patients was significantly higher than that in female patients (P<0.05). Energy, fat and fat energy ratio, carbohydrate and carbohydrate energy ratio from diet in good nutrition/mild malnutrition group, moderate malnutrition, severe malnutrition patients were over reference intake of dietary nutrients for Chinese residents; protein intake and protein energy ratio were greater than reference intake of nutrients for Chinese people. There was no significant difference among the three groups. The selenium intake of the well-nourished/mildly malnourished, moderately malnourished and severely malnourished groups was 67.15, 81.04 and 81.59 µg; vitamin E was 27.81, 30.88, 26.40 mg α-TE; vitamin C was 150.19, 159.81, 183.71 mg; retinol was 904.65, 1401.51, and 1373.81 µg RAE, respectively. Niacin was 12.97, 18.76 and 14.27 mg NE, respectively, reaching or exceeding the reference intake. There was no significant difference among the three groups. In male patients, dietary energy and niacin intake were negatively correlated with PG-SGA score (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with oral cancers have a high incidence of malnutrition before radiotherapy, and the average intake of dietary energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates and micronutrients such as selenium, vitamin E, vitamin C, retinol and niacin reached or exceeded the reference intake. Energy and niacin intake were negatively correlated with PG-SGA score in male patients.

(1) Background: Rhubarb anthraquinones-a class of components with neuroprotective function-can be used to alleviate cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury. (2) Methods: The three pharmacodynamic indicators are neurological function score, brain water content, and cerebral infarction area; UPLC-MS/MS was used in pharmacokinetic studies to detect plasma concentrations at different time points, and DAS software was used to calculate pharmacokinetic parameters in a noncompartmental model. (3) Results: The results showed that the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of one of the five anthraquinone aglycones could be modified by the other four anthraquinones, and the degree of interaction between different anthraquinones was different. The chrysophanol group showed the greatest reduction in pharmacodynamic indicators comparing with other four groups where the rats were administered one of the five anthraquinones, and there was no significant difference between the nimodipine group. While the Aloe-emodin + Physcion group showed the most obvious anti-ischemic effect among the groups where the subjects were administered two of the five anthraquinones simultaneously. Emodin, rhein, chrysophanol, and physcion all increase plasma exposure levels of aloe-emodin, while aloe-emodin lower their plasma exposure levels. (4) Conclusions: This experiment provides a certain preclinical basis for the study of anthraquinone aglycones against cerebral ischemia and a theoretical basis for the study of the mechanism of interaction between anthraquinones.

BACKGROUND: Ageing, chronic diseases, prolonged inactivity, and inadequate nutrition pose a severe threat to skeletal muscle health and function. To date, experimental evidence suggests that ageing-related subclinical inflammation could be an important causative factor in sarcopenia. Although inflammatory signalling has been implicated in the pathogenesis of experimental animal models of sarcopenia, few studies have surveyed the clinical association between circulating factors and muscle mass in patients before and after lifestyle interventions. In this study, we evaluated whether proinflammatory cytokines are associated with the onset of sarcopenia, which circulating factors are associated with the severity of sarcopenia, and how these factors change after lifestyle interventions in sarcopenic elderly persons. METHODS: A total of 56 elderly subjects (age ≥ 60 years) with sarcopenia and 56 elderly non-sarcopenic subjects, who met entry criteria and had given informed consent, were selected from the Peking Union Medical College Hospital multicentre prospective longitudinal sarcopenia study for testing relevant circulating factors. Thirty-two elderly subjects from the sarcopenic cohort completed a 12 week intensive lifestyle intervention programme with whey supplements (30 g/day) and a personalized resistance training regimen. The levels of proinflammatory cytokines and metabolic hormones, pre-intensive and post-intensive lifestyle interventions, were measured. RESULTS: The sarcopenic group was significantly older (72.05 ± 6.54 years; P < 0.001), more likely to be inactive and female (57.1% of all sarcopenic patients), and had a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes (16% higher risk). Compared with non-sarcopenic subjects, serum interleukin (IL)-6, IL-18, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), TNF-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK), and leptin were significantly higher, while insulin growth factor 1, insulin, and adiponectin were significantly lower in sarcopenic patients (all P < 0.05). Logistic regression analyses revealed that high levels of TNF-α (>11.15 pg/mL) and TWEAK (>1276.48 pg/mL) were associated with a 7.6-fold and 14.3-fold increased risk of sarcopenia, respectively. After adjustment for confounding variables, high levels of TWEAK were still associated with a 13.4-fold increased risk of sarcopenia. Intensive lifestyle interventions led to significant improvements in sarcopenic patients' muscle mass and serum profiles of TWEAK, TNF-α, IL-18, insulin, and adiponectin (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: High levels of the inflammatory cytokines TWEAK and TNF-α are associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia, while the metabolic hormones insulin growth factor 1, insulin, and adiponectin are associated with a decreased risk of sarcopenia in our Chinese patient cohort. Intensive lifestyle interventions could significantly improve muscle mass, reduce inflammation, and restore metabolic hormone levels in sarcopenic patients. The NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on board the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite has been making multiple observations of the entire sunlit Earth in a given day from the Sun-Earth Largangian L1 point since the summer of 2015. EPIC contains 10 narrow channels in the 317⁻780 nm solar spectral range. The data acquired with EPIC have already been used in a variety of scientific investigations, including the study of the global ozone levels, aerosol index and aerosol optical depth, UV reflectivity of clouds over land and ocean, cloud height over land and ocean, and vegetation indices. In this article, we report that EPIC data, particularly for the data measured with narrow channels centered near 443, 551, and 680 nm, can also have important applications in remote sensing of ocean color in different geographical regions. We have modified a version of a multi-channel atmospheric correction algorithm for Moderate Resolution Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MODIS) ocean color applications and adapted the algorithm for processing EPIC data. We present three case studies on water leaving reflectance retrievals from EPIC data acquired over a large turbid river, inland lakes, and oceans. We conclude that a future ocean color instrument on board a satellite at the L1 point, which provides continuous view of the full sunlit disk of the Earth, will complement and extend ocean color observations with the low Earth observing polar orbital and geostationary satellite instruments in both the spatial and time domains.

Neutrophil elastase (NE), a typical hematopoietic serine protease, has significant roles in inflammatory and immune responses, and thus is highly associated with various diseases such as acute lung injury (ALI) and lung cancer. Rapid and accurate measurement of NE activity in biological systems is particularly important for understanding the role of NE in inflammatory diseases, as well as clinical diagnosis. However, the specific detection and noninvasive imaging of NE in vivo remains a challenge. To address this issue, a small-molecule substrate based near-infrared fluorogenic probe (NEP) for NE was constructed via incorporating pentafluoroethyl as the recognition group with a hemicyanine dye-based fluorophore. This initially quenched probe possesses more than 25-fold red fluorescence enhancement upon the catalysis of human NE, and the detection limit is about 29.6 ng/mL. In addition, the high specificity and the long emission wavelength (λemmax = 700 nm) of NEP allowed the direct monitoring of NE-trafficking, exogenous NE uptake, and endogenous NE upregulation at the cellular level. Moreover, the successful spatiotemporal imaging of NE in ALI model mice also made it a promising new tool in clinical diagnosis for ALI and other lung diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signalling molecules and activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM) expression in the mechanisms regulating invasion and metastasis in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS: The expressions of SHH signalling molecules Gli family zinc finger 1/2 (Gli1/Gli2), as well as ALCAM expression, was analysed in 101 OSCC patients by immunohistochemistry. The potential relationship between Gli1/Gli2 and ALCAM in regard to invasion and metastasis were studied by western blot, invasion and wound-healing assays. RESULTS: Gli1, Gli2 and ALCAM were expressed in 54.5%, 49.5% and 47.5% of the 101 OSCC specimens, respectively. High expression of ALCAM was associated with shorter survival in the patient population (P = 0.018), which was independent of other clinical parameters. Notably, when both ALCAM expression and positive nodal status were considered, an enhanced prediction of clinical outcomes was achieved (P = 0.001). In OSCC cell lines, down-regulation of ALCAM resulted in reduced cell invasion and metastasis. Importantly, SHH activation increased the half-life of ALCAM leading to ALCAM accumulation and increased cell invasion and migration. CONCLUSION: ALCAM over-expression in OSCC is an independent prognostic factor for OSCC patients. Its over-expression may be the result of the activation of the SHH signalling pathway and contributes to OSCC progression.

Two kinds of extraction methods ultrasonic-assisted micellar extraction (UAME) and microwave-assisted micellar extraction (MAME) coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detector (UHPLC-UV) were developed and evaluated for extraction and determination of zingerone, 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, 6-shogaol and 10-gingerol in Rhizoma Zingiberis and Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparata. A biosurfactant, hyodeoxycholic acid sodium salt, was used in micellar extraction. Several experimental parameters were studied separately by a univariate method. The result indicated that the MAME was more efficient than UAME. The optimal conditions of MAME were as follows: 100mM of hyodeoxycholic acid sodium salt was used as surfactant, the irradiation time was set at 10s and the extraction temperature was set at 60°C. The validation results indicated that the limits of detection were in the range of 3.80-8.11ng/mL. The average recoveries were in the range of 87.32-103.12% for the two samples at two spiking levels. Compared with other reported methods, the proposed MAME-UHPLC-UV method was more effective, quicker (10s) and more eco-friendly.

This study aimed to investigate the safety and effectiveness of irreversible electroporation ablation for unresectable large liver cancer. Fourteen patients were enrolled: 8 with large hepatocellular carcinoma (tumor diameter: 5.1-11.5 cm) and 6 with medium hepatocellular carcinoma (tumor diameter: 3.0-4.1 cm). All patients received percutaneous irreversible electroporation ablation. Ablation time and the incidence of complications were assessed by a t test. Post-irreversible electroporation and regular contrast-enhanced computerized tomography scans were performed to investigate the effect of tumor size (large vs medium) on irreversible electroporation treatment efficacy; 4-table data were assessed using a Fisher exact test. The 14 patients completed irreversible electroporation ablation successfully. In the large hepatocellular carcinoma group, no major complications occurred in the perioperative period. Minor complications comprised bloating, hypokalemia, edema, low white blood cells, and blood clotting abnormalities. All complications were mild and improved after symptomatic treatment. The frequency of minor complications was not significantly different ( P > .05) compared with the medium hepatocellular carcinoma group. The average follow-up time was 2.8 ± 2.1 months and complete ablation was achieved in 25% (2/8; residual = 75%). For the patients with medium hepatocellular carcinoma, the mean follow-up time was 4.3 ± 3.2 months; the rate of complete ablation was 66.6% (4/6; residual rate = 33.3%). The complete ablation rate was not statistically different between the 2 groups ( P > .05). Irreversible electroporation ablation for unresectable large hepatocellular carcinoma is safe, with no major complications. Short-term efficacy is relatively good; however, long-term efficacy remains to be explored.

The reflectance of saline soil in the downstream of No.500 reservoir in Fukang, Xinjiang province was investigated. Through filed sampling and spectral test, using the method of spectral transform, correlation analysis and a quantitative analysis were conducted on the salt and water content of the soil under different disturbance degree. A multiple linear regression model was established between the soil reflectance and soil salinity content. The results show that: first, the human disturbance has a significantly positive correlation with the soil content while it has an extremely negative correlation with the water content. The correlation coefficients are 0.961 and -0.929 respectively. Secondly, it shows that those most heavily disturbed soil reflectance is about 10%higher than the slightly disturbed, while the slightly disturbed soil reflectance is about 17% higher than the undisturbed soil. The reason is that the soil surface of barren land with a small amount of vegetation, the biological creature and soil surface crust have been destroyed. The more the disturbance is, the greater chance the surface layer would be destroyed. Meanwhile, the surface layer of soil will be lack of the crust protective; the soil salinity of the bottom rises to the surface associated with the soil moisture will quickly evaporate. The salt is concentrated to the surface layer due to both little precipitation and a lack of protection of soil crust. Thirdly, the peak wavelength location of the spectrum is increased (999, 876~979, 1 182~1 370, 1 900 nm) while the soil is taken from undisturbed to heavily disturbed conditions, which means that with the increase of disturbance, the soil becomes more sensitive in the near infrared region. What's more, the three different prediction models are established though the reflectance R, the reflectivity of the first derivative R', the reflectance R+water. According to the R(2) and the RMSE to comprehensive judge the accuracy of the model. It is found that among those established prediction models of the same soil salinity in the different levels of disturbance, the smaller the degree of human disturbance is, the higher the accuracy of model is. It is found that among all of those established prediction models, the one based on the derivative of R works the best, of which R(2) is larger than 0.983, model accuracy is improved by 5%~10% ,which means that through a derivative transformation, the linear noises in the original spectrum can be removed.

Zwitterionic complexes have been the subject of great interest in the past several decades due to their multifunctional application in supramolecular chemistry. Herein, a series of internally stable charge-compensated carboranylated square-planar Pt(II) zwitterionic complexes have been explored by density functional theory aim to assessing their structures, the first hyperpolarizabilities, first hyperpolarizability densities, and electronic absorption spectra. It is found that the first hyperpolarizabilities of two-dimensional (2D) structure complexes are much larger with respect to the one-dimensional complex. It is ascribed to the lower transition energy and more obvious charge transfer, which can be further illustrated by their large amplitude and separate distribution of first hyperpolarizability density. In addition, the first hyperpolarizabilities of 2D complexes can be further significantly modified by introducing electron-donating/withdrawing groups on the carborane cage. As a consequence, we believe that these 2D zwitterionic complexes can behave as novel second-order nonlinear optical chromophore with a promising future.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mahuang-Xixin-Fuzi Decoction (MXF) as a famous formula for the treatment of colds, fever, nasal congestion and headache with elder people, has always been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The present study is aimed at investigating the treatment effect of MXF on Kidney-Yang deficiency syndrome in mice simultaneously infected with H1N1 virus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed the Kidney-Yang deficiency mouse model to investigate the effect of MXF against influenza A virus (A/FM/1/47, H1N1). Mice were infected with the virus after fifteen days Kidney-Yang deficiency syndrome was established (intraperitoneal injection of estradiol benzoate), while MXF was orally administrated with 1.2-4.7g/kg/d for 6 consecutive days after inoculation. Body weight, rectal temperature, morbidity, and mortality were recorded daily. Histopathologic changes, antioxidant activity of SOD and MDA were detected. Moreover, levels of inflammatory cytokines including IL-6, IL-10, MCP-1, TNF-α were measured in the sera of mice. RESULTS: We found that the extract of MXF at dosages of 2.3-4.7g/kg could effectively diminish mortality rate, ameliorate lung edema and inflammation. Administration of MXF decoction significantly depressed the expression of IL-6, MCP-1 and TNF-α, and markedly increased expression of IL-10 in serum. Simultaneously, the extract was also found to reduce MDA and increase SOD in the lung tissue of mice. CONCLUSION: These data support the notion that the extract of MXF could treat Kidney-Yang deficiency syndrome in mice simultaneously infected with influenza A virus by reducing inflammation and increasing antioxidant activities.

RESUMO

Flavones (e.g. baicalein and wogonin) extensively used worldwide in food preparation and traditional medicine. In this study, a systematically comparative study of their structure-activity relationships (SAR) on their interaction with BSA, antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity has been carried out by spectrometry, molecular docking and microcalorimetry. Our results show that the skeleton structure of flavones, the number of hydroxyl groups, the type of functional group, conjugated system and the steric hindrance may be responsible for their different biological activity. These findings not only would lay a scientific foundation for discovering and designing flavones-based food and drug, may also help us to understanding the structure-activity relationship between flavones at the molecular level.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to implement nutritional risk screening in patients with community-acquired infection (CAI) and analyze its relationship with clinical outcomes. METHODS: We consecutively assessed 595 patients with CAI from two teaching hospitals for eligibility during this study. Their nutritional risk was evaluated using Nutritional Risk Screening-2002. The hospital length of stay (LOS), rate of readmission, and nutritional support were recorded. RESULTS: In all, 336 patients with CAI were recruited. Of these, 40.61% were at nutritional risk at admission. The prevalence of nutritional risk in those patients age ≥70 y was significantly higher than in younger patients (51.38% versus 37.29%; P = 0.017). There was significant increase in the prevalence of nutritional risk from admission to 2-wk post-admission in all patients (40.61% versus 48.93%; P = 0.036) and in elderly patients (51.38% versus 69.90%; P = 0.010). Of the at-risk patients, the LOS (19.6 ± 12.2 d versus 11.2 ± 5.3 d; P < 0.001) and the rate of readmission (8.8% versus 3.0%; P = 0.026) were significantly higher than those of the patients not at risk. Multivariate analysis showed nutritional support was a protective factor for longer LOS when adjusted for confounders (odds ratio, 0.51; 95% confidence interval, 0.36-0.68; P < 0.001). Only 55.9% of patients at risk received nutritional support and the average ratio of parenteral to enteral nutrition was 4.2:1. CONCLUSIONS: Many patients with CAI were at nutritional risk and tended to worsen during hospitalization, which has been associated with increased LOS and rate of readmission. Nutritional support might be beneficial to the patients by shortening LOS. Inappropriate use of nutritional support was observed in patients with CAI.

The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is the first geostationary ocean color sensor in orbit that provides bio-optical properties from coastal and open waters around the Korean Peninsula at unprecedented temporal resolution. In this study, we compare the normalized water-leaving radiance (nLw) products generated by the Naval Research Laboratory Automated Processing System (APS) with those produced by the stand-alone software package, the GOCI Data Processing System (GDPS), developed by the Korean Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI). Both results are then compared to the nLw measured by the above water radiometer at the Ieodo site. This above-water radiometer is part of the Aerosol Robotic NETwork (AeroNET). The results indicate that the APS and GDPS processed  correlates well within the same image slot where the coefficient of determination (r²) is higher than 0.84 for all the bands from 412 nm to 745 nm. The agreement between APS and the AeroNET data is higher when compared to the GDPS results. The Root-Mean-Squared-Error (RMSE) between AeroNET and APS data ranges from 0.24 [mW/(cm²srµm)] at 555 nm to 0.52 [mW/(cm²srµm)]  at 412 nm while RMSE between AeroNET and GDPS data ranges from 0.47 [mW/(cm²srµm)] at 443 nm to 0.69 [mW/(cm²srµm)]  at 490 nm.

3-Hydroxy-isobutyryl-coenzyme A (CoA) hydrolase (HBICH) deficiency is a rare cerebral organic aciduria caused by disturbance of valine catabolism that leads to the accumulation of toxic metabolites, methacrylyl-CoA. The major feature exhibited by a patient with HBICH deficiency includes multiple congenital malformations and abnormal neurologic findings. However, the pathophysiology of this disease remains unknown. The major treatment for HBICH deficiency involves a low-protein diet, especially restricting valine, supplemented with micronutrients and carnitine. To our knowledge, only four patients with HBICH deficiency have been reported. These patients were boys and presented with different clinical, biochemical, and genetic features than our patient. In this report, we described what was to our knowledge the first genetically confirmed girl with HBICH deficiency in China. A 5-mo nutritional intervention was given to the patient by a nutritional support team. On this regimen, the patient's symptoms were alleviated and her quality of life was improved.

OBJECTIVES: To reveal etiologies of persistent isolated hematuria (PIH) through ultrastructural pathological examination, to disclose clinicopathological correlation in cases with PIH, and to summarize appropriate management of patients with PIH. METHODS: we retrospectively studied 155 PIH patients receiving renal biopsy between January, 2003 and December, 2008 in Peking Union Medical College Hospital. All the clinical data and follow-up result were analyzed. RESULTS: All subjects included 38 children and 117 adults, with mean age of 11.38±3.25 years for children and 35.17±8.44 years for adults. Thin basement membrane nephropathy (TBMN) was the most common pathology (55.3% of children and 49.6% of adults), followed by IgA nephropathy (18.4% of children and 32.5% of adults, mainly grade 2-3) and mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (MsPGN) without IgA deposition (13.2% of children and 12.8% of adults). Besides, Alport syndrome (2.6% of children) and membrane nephropathy (2.6% of children and 0.9% of adults) were demonstrated as other causes of PIH. Elevated mean arteral pressure or protein excretion rate, as well as episodic macrohematuria, indicated higher risk for MsPGN rather than TBMN. On the other hand, severity of microhematuria was irrelevant to pathological types of PIH. Totally, 86 patients were followed up and 37 cases therein stayed on track for long term (mean duration 41.11?28.92 months, range 8-113 months). Most cases had benign clinical course except 3 cases with TBMN, 5 cases with IgA nephropathy, 1 case with MsPGN (without IgA deposition), and 1 case with Alport syndrome, who developed hypertension or proteinuria. All of them were administered timely intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Close follow-up should be required as the primary management for PIH. Equally important is careful monitoring for early identification of undesirable predictors; while renal biopsy and other timely intervention are warranted if there is hypertension, significant proteinuria or renal impairment.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of "Xinjingjie compound lysostaphin antibacterial collutorium" on prevention and treatment of radiation-induced oral mucositis in a prospective, randomized and double-blind clinical trial. METHODS: Sixty patients with oral cancer to be treated with radiotherapy were randomized into the experimental and control group. The experimental group (30 patients) was treated with "Xinjingjie mouthrinse" during the full course of radiotherapy, 4 times daily with 5 mL and 5 min each time. The control group (30 patients) rinsed the mouth in the same way with normal saline. Oral mucositis was assessed according to the RTOG criteria. The severity of mucositis and the degree of pain were recorded and photographed. Patients shouldn't be treated with other drugs until the level of oral mucositis reached above grade III. The results were statistically analyzed using Stata 12.0 software packages. RESULTS: Age, gender, radiotherapy techniques and dose showed no significant difference between the 2 groups (P>0.05). The first onset of oral mucositis in the experimental group was later than that in the control group (11.0 times:9.1 times,P<0.05), and the incidence of pain at the early time of radiotherapy was lower (36.7%: 70.0%, P<0.05). Also, the onset time of grade III oral mucositis in the emperimental group was later than that in the control group (18.9 times:15.9 times,P<0.05), and the incidence of grade III oral mucositis in the experimental group was lower (63.3% vs. 90.0%, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: "Xinjingjie mouthrinse" is worthwhile to be used in clinic because it can delay the occurrence time of radiation-induced oral mucositis, alleviate pain and reduce the indication of grade III oral mucositis.

OBJECTIVE: To study the progression of myopia in school-age children over the past 12 years and factors influencing myopia progression. METHODS: A total of 4569 cases of 5 to 12-year-old children who had refractive examinations in the Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University between January 2000 and December 2011 were enrolled in this study. The children had no family history of congenital high myopia or other eye diseases. Myopia progression was evaluated when the children were re-examined. The refractive state of each child was measured with cyclopiegic retinoscopy. RESULTS: The mean spherical equivalent (SE) myopia was-2.0±1.7 D between January 2000 and December 2011. There was no statistical difference in yearly myopia progression between different years. The average age of the myopic children decreased from 10.1 in 2000 to 8.9 years old in 2011 (P<0.05). Mean myopia progression was -0.6±0.7 D per year from 2000 to 2011. Myopia progression reduced gradually in 5 to 8-year-olds (P<0.05), however, it accelerated between ages 9 and 11 years. Myopia progression in 10- and 11-year-olds was significantly greater than in 7- and 8-year-olds (P<0.01). The multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that age and baseline myopic refraction were positively related to myopia progression. CONCLUSIONS: There was no obvious change in the yearly myopia progression of the children over the past 12 years. The mean age of myopia occurrence became younger with time. More preventive measures are needed to ward off high myopia in children with moderate myopia, especially those aged over 10 years.
