A novel superhydrophobic gas diffusion electrode based on carbon black (CB)- polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) modified graphite felt cathode was prepared to increase oxygen mass transfer efficiency and produce hydrogen peroxide at the gas-liquid-solid three-phase interface without aeration. The gas diffusion electrode system was further tested for the degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) by electro-Fenton (EF) and photoelectro-Fenton (PEF). In the EF process, SMT was removed effectively, but the mineralization degree was not high due to the generation of organic acids which were difficult to be further degraded. While in the PEF process, organic contaminant can be destroyed by the combined action of Fe2+/H2O2, UV/H2O2 and UV radiation, and more efficient mineralization (>83.5%) at low current (50 mA) was attained, which might be attributed to the high H2O2 utilization (70-90%), rapid regeneration of Fe2+ and photolysis of intermediates. In addition, it was verified that the PEF system had a good adaptability to pH and pollutant concentration. Compared with aeration system, the use of this active gas diffusion cathode in electrochemical advanced oxidation processes significantly reduced energy consumption.

RESUMO

Accurately prognostic evaluation of patients with stage I-II pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is of importance to treatment decision and patient management. Most previously reported prognostic signatures were based on risk scores summarized from quantitative expression measurements of signature genes, which are susceptible to experimental batch effects and impractical for clinical applications. Based on the within-sample relative expression orderings of genes, we developed a robust qualitative transcriptional prognostic signature, consisting of 64 gene pairs (64-GPS), to predict the overall survival (OS) of 161 stage I-II PDAC patients in the training dataset who were treated with surgery only. Samples were classified into the high-risk group when at least 25 of 64 gene pairs suggested it was at high risk. The signature was successfully validated in 324 samples from 6 independent datasets produced by different laboratories. All samples in the low-risk group had significantly better OS than samples in the high-risk group. Multivariate Cox regression analyses showed that the 64-GPS remained significantly associated with the OS of patients after adjusting available clinical factors. Transcriptomic analysis of the 2 prognostic subgroups showed that the differential expression signals were highly reproducible in all datasets, whereas the differences between samples grouped by the TNM staging system were weak and irreproducible. The epigenomic analysis showed that the epigenetic alternations may cause consistently transcriptional changes between the 2 different prognostic groups. The genomic analysis revealed that mutation­induced disturbances in several key genes, such as LRMDA, MAPK10, and CREBBP, might lead to poor prognosis for PDAC patients. Conclusively, the 64-GPS can robustly predict the prognosis of patients with stage I-II PDAC, which provides theoretical basis for clinical individualized treatment.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a long-lasting inflammation disease which finally results in ulcer of the colon and rectum. The long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) TUG1 has been described to target miR-142 and regulate its expression. In current study, we evaluated the effects of long non-coding RNA TUG1 on cell injury and inflammatory cytokine production using a TNFα-treated HT-29 cells model. We monitored the level of TUG1 in colonic mucosa tissue of UC patients and in TNF-α-treated HT-29 cells. We investigated the effects of TUG1 on miR-142-5p and SOCS1expression, cell viability, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, production of nitrite and PGE2 after TNF-α treatment in HT-29 cells. We also investigated the effects of TUG1 on TNF-α-induced IL-6, IL-8 and IL-1ß expression in HT-29 cells. We detected down-regulated TUG1 level in colonic mucosa tissue of UC patients and in TNF-α-treated HT-29 cells. Overexpression of TUG1 enhanced cell viability, decreased LDH release, decreased nitrite and PGE2 production after TNF-α treatment in HT-29 cells. TUG1 prevented IL-1ß, IL-6 and IL-8 production in TNF-α-treated cells. TUG1 targeted miR-142-5p and inhibited its expression while enhanced SOCS1 expression. Overexpression of miR-142-5p abolished TUG1-mediated inhibition of TNF-induced inflammatory cytokines production. TUG1 negatively regulated inflammation in ulcerative colitis through miR-142-5p/SOCS1 axis.

Evaluating how wildlife conservation laws are implemented is critical for safeguarding biodiversity. Two agencies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service (FWS and NMFS; Services collectively), are responsible for implementing the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA), which requires federal protection for threatened and endangered species. FWS and NMFS' comparable role for terrestrial and marine taxa, respectively, provides the opportunity to examine how implementation of the same law varies between agencies. We analyzed how the Services implement a core component of the ESA, section 7 consultations, by objectively assessing the contents of >120 consultations on sea turtle species against the requirements in the Services' consultation handbook, supplemented with in-person observations from Service biologists. Our results showed that NMFS consultations were 1.40 times as likely to have higher completeness scores than FWS consultations given the standard in the handbook. Consultations tiered from an FWS programmatic consultation inherited higher quality scores of generally more thorough programmatic consultations, indicating that programmatic consultations could increase the quality of consultations while improving efficiency. Both agencies commonly neglected to account for the effects of previous consultations and the potential for compounded effects on species. From these results, we recommend actions that can improve quality of consultation, including the use of a single database to track and integrate previously authorized harm in new analyses and the careful but more widespread use of programmatic consultations. Our study reveals several critical shortfalls in the current process of conducting ESA section 7 consultations that the Services could address to better safeguard North America's most imperiled species.

The effective treatment of marine aquaculture wastewater is of great significance to protect marine environment and marine organisms. This study validated the feasibility of the comprehensive removal of NH4+-N, NO2--N, COD and P, as well as disinfection and antibiotics removal from marine aquaculture wastewater by electrochemical oxidation (EO), comparing the performance and energy consumption with that by electro-peroxone (EP) and electro-Fenton (EF) process. Due to the formation of more free chlorine, the removal of NH4+-N and COD was in order of EO â‰« EP > EF. A new flow-through EO reactor was adopted, which was found enhanced the formation rate of free chlorine and degradation rate of pollutants, and thus performed better than that of flow-by reactor and batch reactor. By this flow-through EO process, the removal of NH4+-N and NO2--N could reach >90% and their concentrations after treatment both meet the Water Drainage Standard for Sea Water Mariculture (SC/T 9103-2007). Meanwhile, the process had a good bactericidal performance with a lg(c/c0) of -5.6. At the same time, antibiotics such as sulfadimidine (SMT) and norfloxacin (NOR) could be completely removed. The energy consumption was only 0.054 kWh/g NH4+-N (0.27 kWh/m3), which was far more cost-effective than other oxidative processes. The new flow-through EO process has great practical application prospects for the comprehensive removal of multiple pollutants and sterilization from marine aquaculture wastewater.

A method based on the PeakForce QNM atomic force microscopic (AFM) adhesion measurement is employed to investigate the glassy dynamics of polystyrene (PS) single-chain particles end-grafted to SiO2-Si substrates with different diameters, D0, of 3.4 nm-8.8 nm and molar masses, Mn, of 8-123 kg/mol. As temperature was increased, the adhesion force, Fad, experienced by the AFM tip on pulling off the single chains after loading demonstrated a stepwise increase at an elevated temperature, which we identified to be Tg based on previous works. Our result shows that Tg of our grafted single chains increases with Mn in a manner consistent with the Fox-Flory equation, but the coefficient quantifying the Mn dependence of Tg is only (36 ± 6)% the value of bulk PS. In addition, the value of Tg in the Mn → ∞ limit is about 25 °C below the bulk Tg but more than 15 °C above that of (untethered) PS nanoparticles with D0 ≈ 100 nm suspended in a solution. Our findings are consistent with Tg of our single chains being dominated by simultaneous effects of the interfaces, which depress Tg, and end-grafting, which enhances Tg. The latter is believed to exert its influence on the glass transition dynamics by a mechanism reliant on chain connectivity and does not vary with chain length.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation has gained popularity in recent years, as 2 dominant techniques, percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) and microendoscopic discectomy (MED) obtained comparable short-term clinical outcomes. However, midterm and long-term efficacy and reoperative rate are still debated. METHODS: Electronic databases Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Ovid, and EBSCO were searched. STATA 14.0 was used for statistical analysis. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled to quantify the strength of the statistical differences. RESULTS: Nine studies (468 patients in the PELD group and 516 patients in the MED group) with high methodologic quality met the selection criteria. No differences were found in leg pain visual analog scale score before surgery or at any follow-up time after surgery. PELD obtained better outcomes in low back pain visual analog scale score, Oswestry Disability Index score, and excellent and good ratio after 24 months postoperatively (OR = -0.856, 95% CI -1.488 to -0.224, P = 0.008; OR = -0.425, 95% CI -0.724 to -0.127, P = 0.005; OR = 3.034; 95% CI 1.254 to 7.343; P = 0.014) compared with MED. No difference was found within 24 months postoperatively. No significant differences were found in complication, recurrence, and reoperation rates within and after 2 years postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: Both PELD and MED can offer relatively effective and safe treatment for low back pain and radiculopathy associated with a herniated disc. PELD could obtain better midterm and long-term clinical outcomes compared with MED.

A regioselective Wacker-Tsuji oxidation of internal olefins in tBuOH has been developed using oxygen as the terminal oxidant and tert-butyl nitrite as the simple organic redox cocatalyst without the involvement of hazardous cocatalysts or harsh reaction conditions. A series of internal olefins bearing various functional groups can be oxidized to the corresponding substituted ketones in generally good yields with high regioselectivities.

The purpose of the present cross-sectional study was to clarify the effects of sport expertise and shot results on the action anticipation of basketball players. Eighty-eight male subjects participated in this study, namely, 30 collegiate basketball players, 28 recreational basketball players and 30 non-athletes. Each participant performed a shot anticipation task in which he watched the shooting phase, rising phase, high point and falling phase of a free throw and predicted the fate of the ball. The results showed that the collegiate players and recreational players demonstrated higher accuracy than the non-athletes for the falling phase but not for the other temporal conditions. Analysis of the shot results demonstrated that for made shots, the collegiate players and recreational players provided more accurate predictions than the non-athletes. These results suggested that the experienced players required a sufficient amount of information to be able to make accurate judgements and demonstrated that the experts' judgement bias for made shots was independent of the temporal condition.

BACKGROUND: Empathy is a crucial element in fostering a positive relationship between nurses and patients. Recent research indicates that the degree of empathy in nursing students declines as they gain education or experience. A number of teaching strategies have been used to improve nursing students' empathy competence levels. However, little is currently known about how empathy is best taught or enhanced in senior nursing students in China. OBJECTIVES: To implement a structured empathy educational program as developed from the Delphi technique, as well as to evaluate its effects on empathy competence among undergraduate nursing interns. DESIGN: This study is quasi-experimental, with two-group comparison. PARTICIPANTS: Undergraduate nursing students in their fourth year (n = 118) were recruited from an affiliated teaching hospital in Wuhan, Central Part of China, between January 2018 and March 2018. METHODS: A convenience sample of 118 undergraduate nursing interns were recruited from a teaching hospital in Wuhan and assigned to either the intervention or the control group according to their preference. Participants in the intervention group had received a 2-week, 12-hour structured empathy-related educational program (two sessions per week, 3 h per session), whereas the control group received no intervention. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Providers (JSE-HPs) was used to assess students' empathy levels before and after the intervention. RESULTS: An independent samples t-test revealed that scores of empathy competence levels in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group following the intervention. Three domains of empathy competence level were also significantly higher in the intervention group after the two weeks' training relative to the control group, namely: perspective taking, compassionate care, and standing in the patient's shoes. CONCLUSIONS: This modified empathy educational program may prove beneficial in improving the empathy competence level of undergraduate nursing interns.

FOLFOX (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and oxaliplatin) is one of the main chemotherapy regimens for colorectal cancer (CRC), but only half of CRC patients respond to this regimen. Using gene expression profiles of 96 metastatic CRC patients treated with FOLFOX, we first selected gene pairs whose within-sample relative expression orderings (REO) were significantly associated with the response to FOLFOX using the exact binomial test. Then, from these gene pairs, we applied an optimization procedure to obtain a subset that achieved the largest F-score in predicting pathological response of CRC to FOLFOX. The REO-based qualitative transcriptional signature, consisting of five gene pairs, was developed in the training dataset consisting of 96 samples with an F-score of 0.90. In an independent test dataset consisting of 25 samples with the response information, an F-score of 0.82 was obtained. In three other independent survival datasets, the predicted responders showed significantly better progression-free survival than the predicted non-responders. In addition, the signature showed a better predictive performance than two published FOLFOX signatures across different datasets and is more suitable for CRC patients treated with FOLFOX than 5-fluorouracil-based signatures. In conclusion, the REO-based qualitative transcriptional signature can accurately identify metastatic CRC patients who may benefit from the FOLFOX regimen.

Two dimensional (2D) ferroelectric materials are gaining growing attention due to their nontrival ferroelectricity, and the 2D ferroelectric heterostructures with tunable electronic, optoelectronic, or even magnetic properties, show many novel properties that do not exist in their constituents. In this work, by using the first-principles calculations, we investigate the ferroelectric and dipole control of electronic structures of the 2D ferroelectric heterostructure InTe/In2Se3. It is found that band alignment is closely dependent on the ferroelectric polarization of In2Se3. By switching the polarization of In2Se3, the band alignment of InTe/In2Se3 switches from a staggered (type II) to a straddling type (type I), and the band gap changes from indirect gap 0.76 eV to direct gap 0.15 eV. When the ferroelectric field of In2Se3 is reversed, the band alignment of InTe/In2Se3 switches from type-I to type-II, and the band gap changes from indirect gap 0.76 eV to direct gap 0.15 eV. In addition, we find that the interlayer dipole can also effectively modulate the band structure and induce the type-I to type-II band alignment transition. Our present results indicate that the 2D ferroelectric heterostructure with the tunable band alignment and band gap can be of great significance in the optoelectronic devices.

OBJECTIVE: Whether cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) is superior to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) remains controversial, especially in relation to long-term results. The present study aimed to evaluate the long-term safety and efficiency of CDA and ACDF for cervical disc disease. METHODS: We performed this study according to the Cochrane methodology. An extensive search was undertaken in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases up to 1 June 2019 using the following key words: "anterior cervical fusion," "arthroplasty," "replacement" and "artificial disc". RevMan 5.3 (Cochrane, London, UK) was used to analyze data. Safety and efficiency outcome measures included the success rate, functional outcome measures, adverse events (AE), adjacent segment degeneration (ASD), secondary surgery, and patients' satisfaction and recommendation rates. The OR and MD with 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluate discontinuous and continuous variables, respectively. The statistically significant level was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 11 randomized controlled trials with 3505 patients (CDA/ACDF: 1913/1592) were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with ACDF, CDA achieved significantly higher overall success (2.10, 95% CI [1.70, 2.59]), neck disability index (NDI) success (1.73, 95% CI [1.37, 2.18]), neurological success (1.65, 95% CI [1.24, 2.20]), patients' satisfaction (2.14, 95% CI [1.50, 3.05]), and patients' recommendation rates (3.23, 95% CI [1.79, 5.80]). Functional outcome measures such as visual analog score neck pain (-5.50, 95% CI [-8.49, -2.52]) and arm pain (-3.78, 95% CI [-7.04, -0.53]), the Short Form-36 physical component score (SF-36 PCS) (1.93, 95% CI [0.53, 3.32]), and the Short Form-36 mental component score (SF-36 MCS) (2.62, 95% CI [0.95, 4.29]), revealed superiority in the CDA group. CDA also achieved a significantly lower rate of symptomatic ASD (0.46, 95% CI [0.34, 0.63]), total secondary surgery (0.50, 95% CI [0.29, 0.87]), secondary surgery at the index level (0.46, 95% CI [0.29, 0.74]), and secondary surgery at the adjacent level (0.37, 95% CI [0.28, 0.49]). However, no significant difference was found in radiological success (1.35, 95% CI [0.88, 2.08]), NDI score (-2.88, 95% CI [-5.93, 0.17]), total reported AE (1.14, 95% CI [0.92, 1.42]), serious AE (0.89, 95% CI [0.71, 1.11]), device/surgery-related AE (0.90, 95% CI [0.68, 1.18]), radiological superior ASD (0.63, 95% CI [0.28, 1.43]), inferior ASD (0.45, 95% CI [0.19, 1.11]), and work status (1.33, 95% CI [0.78, 2.25]). Furthermore, subgroup analysis showed different results between US and non-US groups. CONCLUSION: Our study provided further evidence that compared to ACDF, CDA had a higher long-term clinical success rate and better functional outcome measurements, and resulted in less symptomatic ASD and fewer secondary surgeries. However, worldwide multicenter RCT with long-term follow up are still needed for further evaluation in the future.

Mullite reticulated porous ceramics (RPC) are one of the key components for porous media burner, the mechanical properties of mullite RPC decided the service life of the burner. However, the irregularities of cellular structure made it difficult to reveal the fracture behavior of mullite RPCs. In this study, the three-dimensional (3-D) structures of mullite RPCs were analyzed by X-ray computed tomography. The strength and damage behavior of mullite RPCs were respectively investigated via the compression tests and finite element modeling based on the actual 3-D model, also the corresponding strengthening mechanism was proposed. The results indicated that the reconstructed 3-D model exhibited the real microstructure of mullite RPCs, containing the hollow struts and strut defects. The Young's modulus calculated from actual 3-D structures was lower than that from Gibson-Ashby theory. In addition, the surface defects preceded triangular tips to generate the area of stress concentration, leading to the fracture behavior first occurred at the strut defects. With the formation of dense strut in mullite RPCs, the stress uniformly distributed in the whole solid skeleton, thus significantly improving the damage resistance of mullite RPCs.

This study aims to investigate the causes of vertigo relapse in patients with Meniere's disease (MD) who had undergone triple semicircular canal plugging (TSCP) and explore the morphologic changes of vestibular organ through revision surgery. Eleven intractable MD patients who underwent TSCP initially and experienced episodic vertigo recurrence later, were enrolled. All patients accepted revision surgery, including seven cases who underwent labyrinthectomy and four cases who underwent repeat TSCP. Pure tone test, caloric test and video-head impulse test (v-HIT) were used to evaluate audiological and vestibular functions. Specimens of canal plugging materials and vestibular end organs were collected from patients who underwent labyrinthectomy during revision surgery. Mineralization and other histological characteristics of canal plugging materials were evaluated by von Kossa staining. Incomplete occlusion or ossification was observed in the semicircular canals (SCs) of all eleven patients, with all three SCs affected in three, the superior SC in five patients, the horizontal SC in two and the posterior SC in one. The results of v-HIT were in accordance with findings discovered intraoperatively. Few mineralized nodules and multiple cavities were found in the von Kossa-stained canal plugging materials. Incomplete occlusion or ossification of SCs was the principal cause of vertigo recurrence in MD patients who underwent TSCP. v-HIT was helpful in determining the responsible SCs.

OBJECTIVE: To promote the application of software AirQ +developed by WHO in the air pollution health risk assessment in China. METHODS: Introduced the calculation principle, scope of application, required data, results output and application examples of the model. Meta-analysis result of exposure-response relationship coefficients of acute health risks of air pollution in China are also provided in this paper. RESULTS: The air quality and other related parameters of the study area in China can be input into AirQ+ software to obtain the attributable risk value of the health outcome of the exposed population compared with the reference concentration. CONCLUSION: The AirQ + software can be used for quantitative assessment of acute health risks of air pollution in China.

BACKGROUND: The surgical selection for patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH) with Modic changes (MCs) is still contentious. Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy via a transforaminal approach (TF-PELD) as a representative minimally invasive spine surgery technique for LDH has been standardized. However, its efficacy has not been thoroughly described in the patients with LDH with MCs. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to assess the clinical outcomes of TF-PELD in the treatment of LDH and MCs. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Inpatient surgery center. METHODS: From January 2015 to December 2016, 276 patients with LDH showing normal or MCs signals in their bone marrow in our hospital were enrolled in this retrospective study. All patients suffered low back and leg pain because of LDH and underwent the TF-PELD procedure. Clinical outcomes were assessed according to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for back pain and leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for functional status assessment, and modified MacNab criteria for patient satisfaction. RESULTS: A total of 182 patients showed normal intensity, 44 patients showed Modic type 1 signals, and 50 patients showed Modic type 2 signals before surgery. The postoperative VAS and ODI scores were significantly improved compared with those preoperatively among the groups. In the Modic type 1 and 2 signals groups, however, the postoperative VAS scores for back pain and ODI scores showed an upward trend with the follow-up time extending. The recurrence rates were 4.4%, 9.1%, and 8.0% in the normal, Modic type 1 and 2 signals groups, respectively. The recurrence rates and satisfaction rates showed no significant difference among the groups at the final follow-up. LIMITATIONS: This study has a small sample size and the follow-up period was too short. There is no comparison with other therapeutic options such as fusion surgery or the lack of any other treatment. CONCLUSIONS: TF-PELD is an option for treatment of patients with LDH even if the patients show MCs. However, the postoperative back pain and functional status have the trend of deterioration with the time extending in patients with MCs, especially in the Modic type 1 signals. RESUMO

This paper presents alternative continuous- and discrete-time neural networks for image restoration in real time by introducing new vectors and transforming its optimization conditions into a system of double projection equations. The proposed neural networks are shown to be stable in the sense of Lyapunov and convergent for any starting point. Compared with the existing neural networks for image restoration, the proposed models have the least neurons, a one-layer structure and the faster convergence, and is suitable to parallel implementation. The validity and transient behaviour of the proposed neural network is demonstrated by numerical examples.

INTRODUCTION: Meniere's disease is a common chronic inner ear disease. Because the definitive pathogenesis is still unknown, there is currently no cure for this disorder. Semicircular canal plugging (SCP), first used to treat patients with intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, has since been applied to patients with intractable peripheral vertigo. This study was aimed to explore the long-term efficacy of triple semicircular canal plugging (TSCP) in the treatment of intractable Meniere's disease (MD) so as to provide a new method in the framework of treatment with MD. METHODS: Three hundred and sixty-one unilateral MD patients, who were treated with TSCP in our hospital between Dec. 2010 and Sep. 2016, were recruited in this study for retrospective analysis. Vertigo control and auditory function were monitored during a period of two-year follow-up. Seventy three patients who were subjected to intratympanic gentamicin were selected as a control group. Pure tone audiometry, caloric test, vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) were performed in two-year follow-up. RESULTS: The total control rate of vertigo in TSCP group was 97.8% (353/361) in the two-year follow-up, with complete control rate of 80.3% (290/361) and substantial control rate of 17.5% (63/361). The rate of hearing loss was 26.3% (95/361). The total control rate of vertigo in intratympanic gentamicin group was 83.6% (61/73), with complete control rate of 63.0% (46/73) and substantial control rate of 20.5% (15/73). The rate of hearing loss was 24.7% (18/73). The vertigo control rate of TSCP was significantly higher than that of chemical labyrinthectomy(χ2 = 24.798, p <  0.05). There was no significant difference of hearing loss rate between two groups. (χ2 = 0.087, p >  0.05). CONCLUSION: Triple semicircular canal plugging (TSCP), which can reduce vertiginous symptoms in patients with intractable Meniere's disease (MD), represents an effective therapy for this disorder. It might become a new important method in the framework of treatment with MD.
