RESUMO

N-type silicon is a kind of semiconductor with a narrow band gap that has been reported as an outstanding light-harvesting material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) reactions. Decorating a thin catalyst layer on the n-type silicon surface can provide a direct and effective route toward PEC water oxidation. However, most of catalyst immobilization methods for reported n-type silicon photoanodes have been based on energetically demanding, time-consuming, and high-cost processes. Herein, a high-performance NiFeP alloy (NiFeP)-decorated n-type micro-pyramid silicon array (n-Si) photoanode (NiFeP/n-Si) was prepared by a fast and low-cost electroless deposition method for light-driven water oxidation reaction. The saturated photocurrent density of NiFeP/n-Si can reach up to ∼40 mA cm-2, and a photocurrent density of 15.5 mA cm-2 can be achieved at 1.23 VRHE under light illumination (100 mW cm-2, AM1.5 filter), which is one of the most promising silicon-based photoanodes to date. The kinetic studies showed that the NiFeP on the silicon photoanodes could significantly decrease the interfacial charge recombination between the n-type silicon surface and electrolyte.

A trispecific hybrid, MTP (hereafter called tripsazea), was developed from intergeneric crosses involving tetraploid Zea mays (2n = 4x = 40, genome: MMMM), tetraploid Tripsacum dactyloides (2n = 4x = 72, TTTT), and tetraploid Z perennis (2n = 4x = 40, PPPP). On crossing maize-Tripsacum (2n = 4x = 56, MMTT) with Z perennis, 37 progenies with varying chromosome numbers (36-74) were obtained, and a special one (i.e., tripsazea) possessing 2n = 74 chromosomes was generated. Tripsazea is perennial and expresses phenotypic characteristics affected by its progenitor parent. Flow cytometry analysis of tripsazea and its parents showed that tripsazea underwent DNA sequence elimination during allohexaploidization. Of all the chromosomes in diakinesis I, 18.42% participated in heterogenetic pairing, including 16.43% between the M- and P-genomes, 1.59% between the M- and T-genomes, and 0.39% in T- and P-genome pairing. Tripsazea is male sterile and partly female fertile. In comparison with previously synthesized trihybrids containing maize, Tripsacum and teosinte, tripsazea has a higher chromosome number, higher seed setting rate, and vegetative propagation ability of stand and stem. However, few trihybrids possess these valuable traits at the same time. The potential of tripsazea is discussed with respect to the deployment of the genetic bridge for maize improvement and forage breeding.

BACKGROUND: The correlation between CYP11B2 rs1799998 polymorphism and atrial fibrillation (AF) was analyzed by several studies, but the results of these studies were inconsistent. Thus, we performed this study to obtain a more conclusive result on relationship between CYP11B2 rs1799998 polymorphism and AF. METHODS: Eligible studies were searched in PubMed, Medline and Embase. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to estimate the strength of correlation. RESULTS: A total of 12 studies with 5466 participants were analyzed. We found that CYP11B2 rs1799998 polymorphism was significantly associated with AF in overall population under recessive genetic model with FEM (P = 0.005, OR = 1.29, 95%CI 1.08-1.54), but no positive results were detected in overall analyses with REMs. Further subgroup analyses revealed that CYP11B2 rs1799998 polymorphism was significantly correlated with AF in East Asians, but not in West Asians. Furthermore, significant associations between rs1799998 polymorphism and AF were observed in subjects with essential hypertension (EH) and heart failure (HF). No any other positive results were found in overall and subgroup analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our meta-analysis suggested that rs1799998 polymorphism may serve as a potential biological marker of AF in East Asians and subjects with EH or HF.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction and the relationship between thyrotropin levels and cardiovascular risk factors in residents of the coastal area of China. METHODS: Atotalof4256individuals(mean[±SD]age50.51±14.24years; 2079 males, 2177 females,) were enrolled in the present study. Sex, blood pressure, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, serum levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid and smoking status were measured. The relationship between thyrotropin levels and cardiovascular risk factors was analyzed. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was 11.07%. The prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism (6.32%) was higher than that of hyperthyroidism (1.53%). The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction among female subjects was higher than that among male subjects (16.54% versus 5.34%, respectively; P<0.001). Significant differences were detected with respect to body mass index (P=0.026), waist-to-hip ratio (P<0.001), fasting glucose levels (P=0.001), total cholesterol levels (P=0.013), triglyceride levels (P=0.003) and smoking status according to different thyrotropin levels. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was high in residents of China's coastal area. Significant differences were detected with regard to body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, fasting glucose levels, total cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and smoking status according to different thyrotropin levels.
