The water of the Longzici Spring catchment is the source of industrial, agricultural, and urban domestic water in Linfen City, Shanxi Province. It is of great significance to identify the sources and influencing factors of karst water resources for their development and utilization, and the protection of the ecological environment. Taking the karst groundwater in the Longzici Spring Area as the research object, systematic sample collection and isotope analysis were carried out. Hydrochemistry methods (Durov diagram, ion ratio system, Gibbs diagram, hydrogen and oxygen isotopes, and sulfur isotopes) were used to analyze the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater. The hydrogeochemical and environmental isotopic characteristics of Longzici Spring water are revealed. The hydrochemical field of karst groundwater in the Longzici Spring domain has obvious zonation, from the deep buried detention area to the supply area to the runoff and discharge area. The hydrochemical types of karst groundwater detention area are SO4-Ca and SO4-Ca·Mg, with total dissolved solids (TDS) of 960.5-2340 mg·L-1; the supply area is HCO3-Ca·Mg and HCO3·SO4-Ca·Mg, with TDS of 340.5-562 mg·L-1; and the runoff and discharge areas are SO4·HCO3-Ca·Mg·Na, SO4·HCO3-Ca, and SO4·HCO3-Ca·Mg, with TDS of 494.0-1168.5 mg·L-1. The karst groundwater is mainly SO4·HCO3-Ca and SO4·HCO3-Ca·Mg type water. The content range of sulfate ions is 61.6-1503 mg·L-1, with an average of 481.4 mg·L-1. A total of 70.3% of the karst groundwater SO42- samples exceed the standard. The sulfate ions in karst groundwater mainly come from the dissolution of gypsum in the Ordovician aquifer and the oxidation of pyrite in a coal aquifer. The ratio of sulfate ions in the Longzici Spring catchment that come from pyrite oxidation in water is 20.2%. According to the analysis of hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotopes, 70% of karst groundwater is polluted by the acid water of coal mines to different degrees. Using the software PHREEQC, it is concluded that the hydrochemical characteristics of the study area are mainly affected by dissolution and dedolomitization, rock salt, and gypsum.

As the abuse of antibiotics continues to increase, the emergence of antibiotic resistance and unknown drug-resistant bacterial infections pose a great threat on people worldwide. In this work, we aimed to develop a series of injectable antimicrobial conductive hydrogels based on glycidyl methacrylate functionalized quaternized chitosan (QCSG), gelatin methacrylate (GM), and graphene oxide (GO) for drug-resistant bacterial disinfection and infectious wound healing. The rheology, morphology, mechanical properties, and electrical and photothermal properties of the hydrogels were characterized. Furthermore, the good in vitro and in vivo intrinsic antibacterial, photothermal antibacterial, and antibiotics released antibacterial properties of this multiantibacterial hydrogel were verified. The good biocompatibility of these hydrogels was also investigated by cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and histocompatibility tests. In the drug-resistant Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infected mouse full-thickness defect model, the wound closure rate, the length of dermal tissue gap, number of blood vessels and hair follicles in hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, the amount of collagen in Masson staining, and the related cytokines for the expression of inflammation (interleukin-6, IL-6) and regeneration of blood vessels (vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF) in immunofluorescence were all further studied. All the results demonstrated the better wound healing effect of these multiantibacterial injectable conductive hydrogel in infectious skin tissue defect repair, indicating their great potential for infected wound healing.

The chemical structures and topologies of the crosslinks in supramolecular networks play a crucial role in their properties and functions. Herein, the preparation of a type of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM)-based supramolecular networks crosslinked by emissive hexagonal metallacycles is presented. The topological connections in these networks greatly affect their properties, as evidenced by their differences in absorption, emission, lower critical solution temperature, and modulus along with the variation of crosslinking densities. The integration of PNIPAAM and metallacycles in the networks benefits them improved bioavailability, making them serve as reagents for bacterial imaging and killing. This study provides a strategy to prepare cavity-crosslinked polymer networks for antibacterial applications.

Infection is a major obstacle to wound healing. To enhance the healing of infected wounds, dressings with antibacterial activities and multifunctional properties to promote wound healing are highly desirable. Herein, gelatin-grafted-dopamine (GT-DA) and polydopamine-coated carbon nanotubes (CNT-PDA) were used to engineer antibacterial, adhesive, antioxidant and conductive GT-DA/chitosan/CNT composite hydrogels through the oxidative coupling of catechol groups using a H2O2/HRP (horseradish peroxidase) catalytic system. The addition of the antibiotic doxycycline endowed the hydrogels with antimicrobial activity to treat infected full-thickness defect wounds. Additionally, CNT-PDA endowed these hydrogels with an excellent photothermal effect, leading to good in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The catechol group and polydopamine imparted tissue adhesiveness, and the hemostatic and antioxidant abilities of these hydrogels were also investigated. The porosity, degradability, swelling, rheological, mechanical, and conductive behaviors of these hydrogels were finely regulated by changing the concentration of CNT-PDA. Hemolysis and cytocompatibility tests using L929 fibroblast cells confirmed the good biocompatibility of these hydrogels. The wound closure, collagen deposition, histomorphological examination and immunofluorescence staining results demonstrated the excellent effects of these hydrogels in an infected full-thickness mouse skin defect wound. In summary, the adhesive antibacterial and conductive GT-DA/chitosan/CNT hydrogels showed great potential as multifunctional bioactive dressings for the treatment of infected wounds.

Dextran with good biocompatibility and degradability shows great potentials for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. Electro-responsive drug delivery system can provide on-demand and localized drug release. However, dextran-based conductive hydrogel with electrical stimuli responsiveness as drug delivery system has not been reported. Herein, we designed and fabricated a kind of biocompatible biodegradable conductive hydrogel system with the property of electro-responsiveness as a new smart drug delivery system for localized drug release. These series of hydrogels were synthesized by mixing dextran and electroactive aniline trimer with hexamethylene diisocyanate as crosslinker to form hydrogel network. These series of hydrogels exhibited stable rheological property and controllable swelling ratio. These hydrogels showed good conductivity and desirable electric stimuli ability to control drug release. Furthermore, this kind of hydrogel was controlled by external electrical stimuli to generate a kind of "on-off" precise drug release system. When extra voltage was applied, they released more drug intelligently and less drug molecule without external stimuli. The hydrogel showed good cytocompatibility and in vivo biocompatibility by using H&E staining and Toluidine blue staining. All together, these results indicated that these series of biocompatible conductive dextran-based hydrogels were promising candidates as smart drug delivery systems in future biomedical field.

Developing injectable nanocomposite conductive hydrogel dressings with multifunctions including adhesiveness, antibacterial, and radical scavenging ability and good mechanical property to enhance full-thickness skin wound regeneration is highly desirable in clinical application. Herein, a series of adhesive hemostatic antioxidant conductive photothermal antibacterial hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid-graft-dopamine and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using a H2 O2 /HPR (horseradish peroxidase) system are prepared for wound dressing. These hydrogels exhibit high swelling, degradability, tunable rheological property, and similar or superior mechanical properties to human skin. The polydopamine endowed antioxidant activity, tissue adhesiveness and hemostatic ability, self-healing ability, conductivity, and NIR irradiation enhanced in vivo antibacterial behavior of the hydrogels are investigated. Moreover, drug release and zone of inhibition tests confirm sustained drug release capacity of the hydrogels. Furthermore, the hydrogel dressings significantly enhance vascularization by upregulating growth factor expression of CD31 and improve the granulation tissue thickness and collagen deposition, all of which promote wound closure and contribute to a better therapeutic effect than the commercial Tegaderm films group in a mouse full-thickness wounds model. In summary, these adhesive hemostatic antioxidative conductive hydrogels with sustained drug release property to promote complete skin regeneration are an excellent wound dressing for full-thickness skin repair.

Injectable hydrogels with multifunctional properties, including tissue adhesiveness and pH-sensitivity are highly desired for localized drug delivery in disease treatment, and their design is still challenging. We developed a series of multifunctional injectable mucoadhesive and pH-responsive hydrogels based on chitosan-grafted-dihydrocaffeic acid (CS-DA) and oxidized pullulan (OP) via a Schiff base reaction. These hydrogels exhibited good injectability, suitable gelation time, in vitro pH-dependent equilibrated swelling ratios, morphologies, and rheological characteristics. The desirable in vitro pH-sensitive drug release behavior of these hydrogels was demonstrated by a drug release test with anti-cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) loaded hydrogels at different pH values. The hydrogels showed good DOX release, effectively killing colon tumor cells (HCT116 cells) and good antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus in vitro when the antibacterial model drug amoxicillin was encapsulated in the hydrogels. A lap-shear test was also carried out with these hydrogels. The hydrogels exhibited good mucosal adhesion, indicating their potential use in mucosa-localized drug delivery systems. All these results suggest that these injectable pH-responsive adhesive hydrogels are ideal candidates for development of colon cancer drug delivery carriers or mucoadhesive drug delivery systems.

Designing wound dressing materials with outstanding therapeutic effects, self-healing, adhesiveness and suitable mechanical property has great practical significance in healthcare, especially for joints skin wound healing. Here, we designed a kind of self-healing injectable micelle/hydrogel composites with multi-functions as wound dressing for joint skin damage. By combining the dynamic Schiff base and copolymer micelle cross-linking in one system, a series of hydrogels were prepared by mixing quaternized chitosan (QCS) and benzaldehyde-terminated Pluronic®F127 (PF127-CHO) under physiological conditions. The inherent antibacterial property, pH-dependent biodegradation and release behavior were investigated to confirm multi-functions of wound dressing. The hydrogel dressings showed suitable stretchable and compressive property, comparable modulus with human skin, good adhesiveness and fast self-healing ability to bear deformation. The hydrogels exhibited efficient hemostatic performance and biocompatibility. Moreover, the curcumin loaded hydrogel showed good antioxidant ability and pH responsive release profiles. In vivo experiments indicated that curcumin loaded hydrogels significantly accelerated wound healing rate with higher granulation tissue thickness and collagen disposition and upregulated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in a full-thickness skin defect model. Taken together, the antibacterial adhesive hydrogels with self-healing and good mechanical property offer significant promise as dressing materials for joints skin wound healing.

RESUMO

Developing injectable antibacterial and conductive shape memory hemostatic with high blood absorption and fast recovery for irregularly shaped and noncompressible hemorrhage remains a challenge. Here we report injectable antibacterial conductive cryogels based on carbon nanotube (CNT) and glycidyl methacrylate functionalized quaternized chitosan for lethal noncompressible hemorrhage hemostasis and wound healing. These cryogels present robust mechanical strength, rapid blood-triggered shape recovery and absorption speed, and high blood uptake capacity. Moreover, cryogels show better blood-clotting ability, higher blood cell and platelet adhesion and activation than gelatin sponge and gauze. Cryogel with 4 mg/mL CNT (QCSG/CNT4) shows better hemostatic capability than gauze and gelatin hemostatic sponge in mouse-liver injury model and mouse-tail amputation model, and better wound healing performance than Tegaderm™ film. Importantly, QCSG/CNT4 presents excellent hemostatic performance in rabbit liver defect lethal noncompressible hemorrhage model and even better hemostatic ability than Combat Gauze in standardized circular liver bleeding model.

OBJECTIVE Large vertebrobasilar fusiform aneurysms (VFAs) represent a small subset of intracranial aneurysms and are often among the most difficult to treat. Current surgical and endovascular techniques fail to achieve a complete or acceptable result because of complications, including late-onset basilar artery thrombosis and perforator infarction. The parallel-stent placement technique was established in the authors' department, and this study reports the application of this technique in the treatment of unruptured VFAs. METHODS Eight patients with 8 unruptured VFAs who underwent parallel stent placement between April 2011 and August 2012 were included. The diameters of the VFAs ranged from 7.9 to 14.0 mm, and the lengths from 27.5 to 54.4 mm. Of the 8 patients with unruptured VFAs, 3 received double or triple parallel stents and 5 patients received a series-connected stent with another 1 or 2 stents deployed parallel to them. Outcomes for these patients were tabulated, based on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score and angiographic results. RESULTS All of the 25 stents were successfully placed without any treatment-related complications. During follow-up, 5 patients had decreased mRS scores, 2 were unchanged, and 1 was increased for subarachnoid hemorrhage. Immediate and follow-up clinical outcome was completely or partially recovered in most patients. Follow-up angiograms revealed 2 aneurysms were reduced in size and 6 were unchanged after stent placement. No in-stent stenosis, occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery, or perforators jailed by the stent occurred in any of the aneurysms. CONCLUSIONS These results provide encouraging support for the parallel-stent placement technique, which can be envisaged as an alternative strategy against unruptured VFAs. However, testing in more patients is needed.

The highly regioselective and operationally straightforward [3 + 2] cyclizations of ß-chlorovinyl dithianes with α,ß-unsaturated carbonyl compounds have been developed. This protocol provides direct access to highly functionalized cyclopentenes with perfect chemo- and regioselectivities under extremely mild reaction conditions. In particular, the unprecedented cyclization allows for the selective preparation of hydroxylated cyclopentenes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility, safety, clinical, and angiographic follow-up of only overlapping stents therapy for intracranial vertebral artery dissection aneurysms (VADA). METHODS: Eight consecutive patients (6 men, 2 women; mean age 46.8 years ranging from 34 to 62 years) with intracranial VADA admitted to Department of Neurology, Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital from June 2008 to June 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were diagnosed intracranial VADA by MRI or digital subtraction angiography (DSA). All patients were treated by only overlapping stents therapy under general anesthesia. In the endovascular treatment process 2 to 3 Solitaire, Neuroform or Wingspan self-expandable stents were overlapping implanted in the segment of the aneurysms. All patients received routine antiplatelet therapy before and after endovascular treatment. RESULTS: The operative procedures were succeeded in all patients. Eight patients were implanted 18 stents (2 patients, 3 stents; 6 patients, 2 stents). The stents were located accurately and implanted smoothly, none perioperative complications occurred. All patients lived and worked normally and had no recurrent symptoms on follow-up of 6 to 48 months. All patients performed DSA reexamination on follow-up. The aneurysm blocked in 2 patients, the size lessened in 2 patients, and the size had no change in 3 patients. CONCLUSIONS: Only overlapping stents therapy for treating intracranial VADA is feasible and has good operation safety. Preliminary follow-up results show that it can reduce the probability of thrombosis or hemorrhage and can improve the patients' life quality.

The development of a new transition-metal-free tactic for convergent, one-pot synthesis of multisubstituted furans by ß-chloro-vinyl dithiane cyclization with aldehydes is described. Key to the success was the development of a new vinylidene dithiane site as a donor allene that generates the active dihydrofuran, which undergoes in situ aromatization under mild conditions.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most important causes of end­stage renal disease. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) is a saponin isolated from Astragalus membranaceus, which possesses various pharmacological activities. AS­IV prevents podocyte apoptosis and ameliorates renal injury in DN; however, few studies have focused on its effects on ion channels. The transient receptor potential channel 6 (TRPC6) is an important Ca2+­permeable ion channel in podocytes, which is involved in high glucose (HG)-induced podocyte apoptosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether AS­IV prevented HG­induced podocyte apoptosis via TRPC6. Cultured podocytes were pre­treated with 10, 20 or 40 µM AS­IV for 1 h prior to HG exposure for 24 h. Apoptosis, cell viability, expression of TRPC6, nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT2) and B­cell lymphoma 2­associated X protein (Bax), as well as the intracellular Ca2+ concentration were subsequently analyzed. The results indicated that HG induced podocyte apoptosis and upregulation of TRPC6, and increased intracellular Ca2+. Furthermore, enhanced NFAT2 and Bax expression was detected. Conversely, AS­IV protected HG­induced podocyte apoptosis, downregulated TRPC6 expression and suppressed intracellular Ca2+ in HG-stimulated podocytes. AS­IV also suppressed NFAT2 and Bax expression. These results suggest that AS­IV may prevent HG-induced podocyte apoptosis via downregulation of TRPC6, which is possibly mediated via the calcineurin/NFAT signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility,safety and follow-up results of multiple stents parallel placement and reconstruction technique for treating giant vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms. METHODS: Five consecutive patients with giant fusiform vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms in Department of Neurology,Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital were retrospectively reviewed from April 2011 to October 2013. All patients were diagnosed vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms by MRI and digital subtraction angiography (DSA), the aneurysm size ranged 8.2-15.0 mm. All patients were treated by multiple stents parallel placement and reconstruction technique under general anesthesia. In the endovascular treatment process, 2-3 Solitaire or Neuroform self-expandable stents were parallel implanted in the maximum extension segment of the aneurysms to reconstruct the cavity of the aneurysm and solved the problem that the diameter of the intracranial stent is less than the diameter of the aneurysms. Multiple stents parallel placement can keep the stents stable in the cavity. The parallel stent can close the dissection as well as strengthen the aneurysm walls to alleviate the vessel pulsative compression of the brain stem. Furthermore, one of the parallel stents was selected for the main blood flow channel. Based on the main channel, telescope technique was used to completely covering the dissection. It can not only prevent the progress of dissection to normal regions, but also be helpful for blood flow channel reconstruction to reduce the hemodynamic disorders. All Patients received routine antiplatelet therapy before and after endovascular treatment. RESULTS: The operative procedures were succeeded in all patients. Five patients were implanted 18 stents (3 stents in 3 patients; 4 stents in 1 patient; 5 stents in 1 patient; parallel 3 stents in 2 patients; parallel 2 stents in 3 patients). The signs and symptoms of brain stem and posterior group of cranial nerves improved significantly. All patients lived and worked normally and had no recurrent symptoms on follow-up of 6-24 months. All patients performed DSA reexamination at 6-12 months postoperation. The aneurysm size lessened in 2 patients and had no change in 3 patients. CONCLUSIONS: Multiple stents parallel placement and reconstruction technique for treating giant fusiform vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms is feasible and have good operation safety. It may control the dilatation of the aneurysm and reduce the probability of thrombosis or hemorrhage. It can improve the patients' clinical symptoms and quality of life in short term follow-up. The long term result need for further follow-up.

Atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of 2-chlorodithiane onto aryl alkynes through the use of di-tert-butyl peroxide as an oxidant at room temperature directly affords a variety of synthetically valuable ß-chloro-(Z)-vinyl dithianes in good yields with high regioselectivities and without the assistance of any transition metals. It provides an operationally simple pathway to access vinyl dithianes with controlled formation of a new C(sp(2) )C bond and a C(sp(2) )Cl bond.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the imaging anatomic features of symptomatic cerebral venous sinus stenosis, and evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of different treatment methods. METHODS: From August 2001 to September 2004, 173 patients (transverse sinus stenosis 150, middle of the superior sagittal sinus stenosis 18, proximal part of sigmoid sinus stenosis 3, straight sinus stenosis 2; combined with sinus diverticulum 14, combined with Labbe's vein stenosis 3) were confirmed venous sinus stenosis by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Among these patients, 121 were treated by stent implantation and the other 52 with mild symptoms by anticoagulation and/or thrombolysis treatment. RESULT: The treatment procedures were succeeded in all patients. 2 patients developed temporal and occipital hemorrhage during the procedure of artery thrombolysis, and 1 patient developed epidural hematoma in the transverse sinus area.All the 3 patients had a satisfactory prognosis through symptomatic treatment.There was no recurrence for all the patients during the follow-up period ranging from 1 to 9 years.9 patients who had recurring dizziness were confirmed no stent stenosis or thrombosis by DSA. The sites of stenosis in 168 patients (97%) were in the connect area of sigmoid and transverse sinuses or in the middle segment of superior sagittal sinus, where arachnoid granulations were focused on according to the anatomic characteristics. CONCLUSIONS: There is significant correlation between the cerebral venous sinuses stenosis and the abnormal growth of arachnoid granulations in the sinuses; the neurologic deficits caused by venous sinus stenosis can be relieved and eliminated by anticoagulation, thrombolysis, or stent implantation. Favorable medium-long term outcome is showed in the study population.

BACKGROUND: Studies have hypothesized that alterations in haemodynamics and rheological properties in the main vessels like the main stem of the carotid artery or the internal carotid arteries are responsible for the formation of cerebral aneurysms. AIMS: The objectives of the current analyses were to collate data that have examined the occurrence of cerebral aneurysm with coexisting internal carotid artery stenosis. METHODS: Data sources were collated from detailed PubMed search obtained from 1990 till current. Published literature that deals with the epidemiologic properties as well as prevalence was scanned for data extraction. Publications that reported coexistence of internal carotid artery stenosis with intracranial aneurysm, detected by any modality of imaging, was included in the current study. Spearman's correlation analyses were used to obtain significant information of coexistence of an intracranial aneurysm with an extracranial internal carotid artery stenosis. RESULTS: The frequency of concurrent extracranial internal carotid artery stenosis and an unruptured cerebral artery aneurysm is not known exactly, but has been estimated to be approximately 4%. The major limitations of the current analyses actually can be retrospectively traced to the lack of detailed analyses in this important area of investigation. CONCLUSIONS: Although low in absolute occurrence, there is a significant correlation of the existence of an intracranial aneurysm with carotid artery stenosis. Thus, if peripheral stenosis is detected by any imaging modality including carotid Ultrasonography scan, we recommend digital subtraction intracranial angiography to detect any potential aneurysm and define its radiologic morphology.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the renal microvascular injury in chronic aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) and the protective effects of Cozaar. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into three groups. Rats in the model group received Caulis Aristolochiae manshuriensis (CAM) decoction by gavage (10 mL/kg/day); those in the Cozaar group were gavaged with CAM and Cozaar (33.3 mg/kg/day); and those in the control group only received an equal daily volume of saline solution by gavage. Kidney tissues were observed under a light and electron microscope. CD34, caspase-3, and bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) were determined by immunohistochemistry, and expressions of angiopoietin (Ang) 1 and 2, Tie-2, BMP-7, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA were monitored via real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: (1) The kidney tissue injury in the chronic AAN model group was apparent, compared to the normal structure in the normal control group, and the Cozaar group showed relieved injury. (2) The expression of caspase-3 in the model group was elevated, while expressions of BMP-7 and CD34 were decreased (p < 0.05). Cozaar lessened caspase-3 expression (p < 0.05) and promoted BMP-7 and CD34 expressions (p < 0.05). (3) Real-time PCR demonstrated a downregulation of Ang-1, Tie-2, BMP-7, and VEGF mRNA (p < 0.05) and an upregulation of Ang-2 mRNA (p < 0.01) in the renocortex, while Cozaar upregulated the expression of Ang-1, Tie-2, BMP-7, and VEGF mRNA (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Renal microvascular injury was observed in chronic AAN, which was hypothetically correlated with a lack in the expressions of Ang-1, BMP-7, Tie-2, and VEGF and an excess in caspase-3 and Ang-2. Cozaar can significantly ameliorate the renal microvascular injury and protect renal function.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Wenyang Huoxue Recipe (WRHXR), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine for warming yang and promoting blood flow, on the expression of angiopoietin mRNA in rats with chronic aristolochic acid nephropathy induced by Caulis Aristolochia Manshuriensis (CAM) decoction, and to explore the protection mechanism of WYHXR against kidney damage. METHODS: Twenty-eight male SD rats were randomly divided into normal control group, CAM group and WYHXR-treated group. Rats in the normal control group (n=8) and CAM group (n=10) were intragastrically administered with normal saline 10 ml/(kg.d) or CAM decoction 10 ml/(kg.d) respectively. Rats in the WYHXR-treated group (n=10) were intragastrically administered with WYHXR 30 g/(kg.d) and CAM decoction 10 ml/(kg.d). The expressions of Ang-l and Ang-2 mRNAs were detected by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) after 20-week treatment. RESULTS: Compared with the normal control group, the expression of Ang-l mRNA was significantly decreased, and the expression of Ang-2 mRNA was significantly increased in the CAM group (P<0.01). Compared with the CAM group, the expression of Ang-l mRNA was increased in the WYHXR-treated group (P<0.01). The expression of Ang-2 mRNA had no significant difference between the CAM group and the WYHXR-treated group (P>0.05). Renal pathology showed that renal damage in WYHXR-treated group was significantly reduced as compared with the CAM group. CONCLUSION: WYHXR can up-regulate the expression of Ang-l mRNA, which may be its action mechanism in protecting the kidneys.
