RESUMO

Objective To analyze the impact of sleep quality/duration on cardiac autonomic modulation on physically active adolescents with obesity. Materials and Methods The present cross-sectional study included 1,150 boys with a mean age of 16.6 ± 1.2 years. The assessment of cardiac functions included the frequency domain of heart rate variability (HRV; low frequency - LF; high frequency - HF; and the ratio between these bands -LF/HF -, defined as the sympathovagal balance), and each parameter was categorized as low / high . Physical activity levels and sleep quality/duration were obtained by questionnaires. Abdominal obesity was assessed and defined as waist circumference > 80 th percentile. Results Poor sleep quality resulted in lower HF (odds ratio [OR]: 1.8; 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 1.01-3.21]) regardless of physical activity and abdominal obesity. Moreover, the study found no association between sleep duration and HRV parameters in adolescents. Conclusion Sleep quality, not sleep duration, reduces parasympathetic cardiac modulation apart from other factors such as physical activity and abdominal obesity in adolescents.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Physical inactivity is associated with low heart rate variability (HRV) in adolescents. However, whether the number of physical education (PE) classes impact HRV remains unclear. This cross-sectional study verified the association between the frequency of PE classes and HRV parameters in male adolescents. This study included 1152 boys (16.6 ± 1.2 years). The quantity of PE classes was assessed though questionnaire and the adolescents were stratified accordingly (no PE class; one PE class/wk; ≥2 PE classes/wk). Time- (SDNN, RMSSD, PNN50) and frequency-domains (LF, HF, sympathovagal balance) of HRV were obtained. Generalized Linear Models were used for comparing the HRV parameters according to the quantity of PE classes, adjusting for confounders. There was no difference in HRV measures of time: (SDNN, p = 0.77; RMSSD, p=0.72; PNN50, p=0.83) and frequency (LF, p=0.61; HF, p=0.61; sympathovagal balance, p=0.60) between the different frequencies of PE classes. The frequency of PE classes in not associated with HRV parameters of male adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze scientific evidence on the use of blenderized tube feeding in children regarding nutritional composition, family satisfaction, and health outcomes. DATA SOURCE: Survey was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases using the following search terms: blenderized tube feeding OR blended tube feeding OR homemade OR pureed AND enteral nutrition AND enteral tube. The methodological quality of the selected articles was evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skill Programme and Hierarchical Classification of Evidence. DATA SYNTHESIS: After analysis, 11 articles were included in the present review. Most studies demonstrated improvements in health outcomes and greater family satisfaction after replacing the commercial enteral feeding with blenderized tube feeding. CONCLUSIONS: When guided and monitored by the healthcare team, a blenderized tube feeding ensures an adequate nutritional composition. The use of this method is also associated with positive health outcomes such as reductions in gastrointestinal symptoms and hospitalizations. Moreover, a high frequency of family satisfaction was verified.

RESUMO

Abstract Sedentary behavior tends to increase with aging and several studies have focused on analyzing the components which may influence this pattern of behavior. Indirect and direct measuring have been used to determine the relative parameters to this phenomenon while there is no consensus about which parameter should be adopted to conceptualize sedentary behavior, making difficulty to establish comparisons among the studies on this population. The aim of this study was to systematically review the characterization of low level of physical activity and sedentary behavior in studies with older people. Electronic search on Scielo, LILACS, MEDLINE, PubMed, and ISI Web of Knowledge was carried out. Selection of the studies included: original manuscripts, with elderly analyzing sedentary behavior or low-level pf physical activity through direct and indirect measure. Search initially screened 190 manuscripts yielding 10 relevant studies. Questionnaire, self-reported questionnaire and accelerometer were the instruments used in the studies. Sedentary behavior or low level of physical activity was characterized by analyzing sitting time, physical activity on leisure time, counts per minute, engaging in moderate or vigorous intensity during day or performing physical activities with MET <1.5. There is no standardization of the parameters adopted to characterize sedentary behavior on studies, generating divergent results and making it difficult to establish comparisons.

Pesquisa eletrônica no Scielo, LILACS, MEDLINE, PubMed e ISI Web of Knowledge foi realizada.

The aim of this study was to synthesize, through a systematic review, the effects of Pilates on sleep quality in adults and elderly. Therefore, a systematic review of clinical trials analyzing the effects of Pilates on sleep quality, published in journals indexed in the PubMed/Medline database, LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) and SCOPUS published until 2019 was performed. Eight studies were included in this review, with total sample size of 608 participants aged from 18 to 64 years. Among the studies, three included the elderly in the sample. Program protocols ranged from 4 to 16 weeks, 2 to 3 sessions, average duration of 120 to 180 minutes per week. The number of exercises ranged from 13 to 15 exercises, performed in 1 or 2 sets, 8 to 12 repetitions, with breathing control. All studies used the Mat Pilates as intervention and assessed sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) or the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). It was observed an improvement in the PSQI score through increased sleep efficiency and overall quality and reduced sleep latency, and a reduction in ESS score after interventions. The reported results indicated that the Mat Pilates program improved sleep quality in adults and elderly

RESUMO

Objective: to analyze the post exercise cardiovascular effects of different resistance exercise protocols for trunk and upper limbs. Methods: Fifteen males (22.3 ± 0.9 years) underwent three experimental sessions randomly: control session (C), resistance exercise session at 50% of one repetition maximum (1-RM) (E50%), and resistance exercise session at 70% of 1-RM (E70%). Three sets of 12, 9 and 6 repetitions were performed for each exercise. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and rate pressure product (RPP) were measured before and during 90 minutes after each session. Results: Systolic BP decreased (P<.05) and diastolic BP increased (P<.05) similarly after C, E50% and E70%. However, HR and RPP decreased after C (P<.01), maintained after E50%, and increased after E70% (P<.01). Conclusions: The resistance exercise intensity did not influence post-exercise BP responses, however, cardiac overload was greater after E70%.

Studies suggest that patients with intermittent claudication (IC) present abnormal cardiovascular responses during treadmill exercise. However, it remains unclear whether this response is influenced by the severity of the disease. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of IC severity on cardiovascular responses to an exercise test in subjects with peripheral arterial obstructive disease. Forty-seven men and women with IC, with a mean age of 65±9 years, participated in the study. The subjects underwent an exercise test on a treadmill using a specific protocol for this population. The subjects were divided into three groups according to thedistance walked in the test: 1st tertile, walked from 210 to 420 m; 2nd tertile, walked from 450 to 700 m, and 3rd tertile, walked from 740 to 1060 m. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR) and rate-pressure product (RPP) were measured at rest, in the first stageof the treadmill test, and during peak exercise. SBP and DBP increased along the exercise test in the three tertiles. HR and RPP increased along the test in the three tertiles, and these increases were higher in the 1st tertile than in the other tertiles in the first stage. However, similar HR andRPP were observed for the three tertiles during peak exercise. In conclusion, the severity of IC did not affect blood pressure responses during treadmill exercise. However, HR and RPP werehigher during submaximal exercise in subjects with more severe IC.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical fitness and the indicators of quality of life in individuals with intermittent claudication (IC). Forty-two subjects (65.2 ± 8.3 years) with IC of both genders participated in the study. Exercise treadmill test, to assess claudication distance (CD) and total walking distance (TWD), and one repetition maximum knee extension test were used to evaluate physical fitness. The quality of life indicators were obtained from the Medical Outcome Study Questionnaire Short Form, which is composed of eight domains: physical functioning (PF), physical aspects (PA), pain, general health, vitality (VI), social functioning (SF), emotional aspects (EA) and mental health. For statistical analysis Pearson correlation coefficient was used, with p < 0.05. There was a significant correlation between PF and CD and TWD (r = 0.60, p < 0.01 and r = 0.49; p < 0.01, respectively), between RP and TWD (r = 0.46, p < 0.01), between VI and SF and CD (r = 0.34, p = 0.03 e r = 0.33, p = 0.04; respectively), and between EA and CD and TWD (r = 0.43, p = 0.01 and r = 0.44, p = 0.01; respectively). In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that indicators of quality of life, both related to physical health and emotional health, are correlated with the walking capacity in patients with IC.
