This paper describes four new species of the superfamily Grylloidea from Yunnan, China, including a new species of Gryllidae: Tarbinskiellus sororius Wang, Zhang Liu sp. nov.; a new species of Mogoplistidae: Ornebius yunnanensis Wang, Zhang Liu sp. nov.; two new species of Trigonidiidae: Homonemobius curifolis Zhang, Wang Liu sp. nov. and Pteronemobius (Pteronemobius) truncates Zhang, Wang Liu sp. nov. In addition, photographs of habitus and genitalia and a distribution map are provided.

RESUMO

Due to the increase of emerging contaminants in water, how to use new treatment technology to make up for the defects of traditional wastewater treatment method has become one of the research hotspots at present. Intimate coupling of photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) as a novel wastewater treatment method, which combines the advantages of biological treatment and photocatalytic reactions, has shown a great potential as a low-cost, environmental friendly and sustainable treatment technology. The system mainly consists of photocatalytic materials, porous carriers and biofilm. The key principle of ICPB is to transform bio-recalcitrant pollutants into biodegradable products by photocatalysis on the surface of porous carriers. The biodegradable products were mineralized simultaneously through the biofilm inside the carriers. Because of the protection of the carriers, the microorganism can remain active even under the UV-light, the mechanical force of water flow or the attack of free radicals. ICPB breaks the traditional concept that photocatalytic reaction and biodegradation must be separated in different reactors, improves the purification capacity of sewage and saves the cost. This review summarizes the recent advances of ICPB photocatalysts, carriers and biofilm being applied, and focuses on the mechanisms and reactor configurations which is particularly novel. Furthermore, the possible ongoing researches on ICPB are also put forward. This review will provide a valuable insight into the design and application of ICPB in environment and energy field.

To study the effects of maternal dietary fiber composition during gestation on offspring antioxidant capacity, inflammation, and gut microbiota composition, we randomly assigned 64 gilts to four treatments and administered diets with an insoluble/soluble fiber ratio of 3.89 (R1), 5.59 (R2), 9.12 (R3), and 12.81 (R4). Sow samples (blood and feces at gestation 110) and neonatal samples (blood, liver, and colonic contents) were collected. The results showed that sows and piglets in R1 and R2 had higher antioxidant enzyme activity and lower pro-inflammatory factor levels than those in R3 and R4. Moreover, piglets in R1 and R2 had higher liver mRNA expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 and lower NF-κB than piglets in R4. Interestingly, maternal fiber composition not only affected the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in sow feces but also influenced the concentrations of SCFAs in the neonatal colon. Results of high-throughput sequencing showed that piglets as well as sows in R1 and R2 had microbial community structures distinct from those in R3 and R4. Therefore, the composition of dietary fiber in pregnancy diet had an important role in improving antioxidant capacity and decreasing inflammatory response of mothers and their offspring through modulating the composition of gut microbiota.

The diagnosis of the Themus (Telephorops) nepalensis species-group is summarized. A catalogue, a key and a distribution map of all world species are provided. Two synonymies are proposed: Themus (Telephorops) subcaeruleiformis Wittmer, 1983, syn. nov. = T. (Telephorops) crassimargo Champion, 1926; T. (Telephorops) separandus Wittmer, 1975, syn. nov. = T. (Telephorops) laboissierei (Pic, 1929). The female internal genitalia are photographed and described in this species-group for the first time, the aedeagi of T. (Telephorops) crassipes Pic, 1929 and T. (Telephorops) impressipennis (Fairmaire, 1886) are illustrated and described for the first time, and some additional distribution information is provided for the species. Themus (Telephorops) cavipennis (Fairmaire, 1897) is a new record for the Chinese fauna.

RESUMO

A key and a distribution map of the Chinese species of the genus Pentacentrus Saussure are provided. Pentacentrus dulongjiangensis sp. nov. is described from Yunnan, China. The new species is similar to P. medogensis Zong, Qiu Liu, 2017 from Xizang, China, but differs from the latter by the shape of male genitalia and the color of the tegmina.

RESUMO

Themus (Telephorops) davidis species-group is redefined and we present a catalogue, identification key and distribution map for this group. Some previously known species are redescribed and we provide new illustrations of female internal genitalia, abdominal sternite VIII and/or aedeagus. Further, we report new distribution data. A new species, Themus (Telephorops) hainanus sp. nov. from China (Hainan) is described, and Themus (Telephorops) birmanicus Wittmer, 1983 is recorded from China for the first time.

Three new species of Phyllotrella Gorochov, 1988 are described: P. hainanensis sp. nov. (China: Hainan), P. transversa sp. nov. (China: Guangdong, Guangxi) and P. fumingi sp. nov. (China: Guangdong), which are illustrated with the habitus, metanotal gland, phallus and anal plate of the male. P. planidorsalis Gorochov, 1988 is excluded from Chinese fauna. A distribution map and a key of all species of Phyllotrella are provided.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal high dietary protein intake on the hepatic growth axis in offspring. METHODS: Fourteen primiparous purebred Meishan sows were fed either a standard-protein (SP, n = 7) diet or a high-protein (HP, 150% of SP, n = 7) diet during pregnancy. Offspring (one male and one female per group, n = 14) on day 70 of the embryonic stage and on days 1, 35 and 180 after birth were selected, weighed and killed. Serum samples were analyzed for Tch, insulin and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) levels. Liver samples were analyzed for IGFBP-3 and IGF-I mRNA expression by qRT-PCR and for IGFBP-3, IGF1R and growth hormone receptor (GHR) protein expression by Western blotting. The underlying mechanism of IGFBP-3 regulation was determined by methylated DNA immunoprecipitation (MeDIP) and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP). RESULTS: High-protein exposure resulted in significantly higher body and liver weights of piglets, and it increased their serum T3 and T4 levels at birth and/or at weaning. Furthermore, the IGFBP-3 protein content in the liver and serum was significantly reduced in the HP-exposed weaning piglets, whereas at the transcriptional level IGFBP-3 mRNA expression was downregulated in the livers of HP group piglets. Finally, DNA hypermethylation and higher enrichment of the histone repressive marks H3K27me3 and H3K9me3 were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results suggest that a maternal high-protein diet during gestation epigenetically reprograms IGFBP-3 gene expression to modulate the hepatic growth axis in weaning piglets.

To investigate the effects of the ratio of insoluble fiber to soluble fiber (ISF:SF) on sow performance and piglet intestinal development, we randomly assigned 64 gilts to four treatments comprising diets with the same level of dietary fiber, but different ISF:SF values of 3.89 (T1), 5.59 (T2), 9.12 (T3), and 12.81 (T4). At birth and weaning, six piglets per treatment at each phase were slaughtered for sampling. As ISF:SF increased, the mean piglet body weight (BW) at weaning and piglet BW gain, which were all significantly higher in T1 and T2 compared with T3 and T4 (p < 0.05), showed a linear decrease (p < 0.05); the crypt depth of the jejunum in weaned piglets linearly increased, whereas the duodenal weight, jejunal villus height, and villus height/crypt depth in newborn piglets and enzymatic activity of lactase, sucrase, and maltase linearly decreased (p < 0.05). No differences were observed in the yield and composition of milk (p > 0.05). Moreover, when the ISF:SF was 3.89 in gestation diets, higher piglet BW at weaning occurred, possibly because the ISF:SF affected development and enzymatic activity in the small intestine-effects related to digestion and absorption of nutrients-and consequently enhanced piglet BW gain.

SCOPE: Emerging evidence suggests that high-fat diet (HFD) is associated with gut microbiome dysbiosis and related disorders. Bilberry is a prebiotic food component with known health benefits. Herein, the dynamics of the colonic mucus layer and microbiome during HFD and bilberry supplementation are addressed. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effects on colonic mucus thickness in vivo and gut microbiota composition (Illumina sequencing, quantitative real-time PCR) are investigated in young rats fed a low-fat diet or HFD with or without bilberries for 8 weeks (n = 8). HFD induced significant local colonic effects, despite no observed weight gain or systemic inflammation, as HFD causes epithelial upregulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase, which is counteracted by bilberry. The firmly adherent mucus layer becomes thicker and the mRNA levels of Muc2 and Tff3 are increased by HFD with or without bilberry. In parallel, HFD reduced the colonic abundance of mucolytic bacterial species Akkermansia muciniphila and Bacteroides spp. Finally, bilberry prevents HFD-induced microbiota dysbiosis, including expansion of pathobionts, for example, Enterobacteriaceae. CONCLUSION: HFD expand firmly adherent mucus thickness and reduce mucus-foraging bacteria populations in the colon prior to obesity. Enriching HFD with bilberry protects against intestinal inflammation and marked microbiota encroachment.

Obesity is linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk factors associated to metabolic syndrome. Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) that contains easily fermentable fiber may strengthen the intestinal barrier function, attenuate inflammation and modulate gut microbiota composition, thereby prevent obesity development. In the current study, liver lipid metabolism, fat depot, cecal and serum short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and gut microbiome were evaluated in rats fed bilberries in a high-fat (HFD + BB) or low-fat (LFD + BB) setting for 8 weeks and compared with diets containing equal amount of fiber resistant to fermentation (cellulose, HFD and LFD). HFD fed rats did not obtain an obese phenotype but underwent pre-obesity events including increased liver index, lipid accumulation and increased serum cholesterol levels. This was linked to shifts of cecal bacterial community and reduction of major SCFAs. Bilberry inclusion improved liver metabolism and serum lipid levels. Bilberry inclusion under either LFD or HFD, maintained microbiota homeostasis, stimulated interscapular-brown adipose tissue depot associated with increased mRNA expression of uncoupling protein-1; enhanced SCFAs in the cecum and circulation; and promoted butyric acid and butyrate-producing bacteria. These findings suggest that bilberry may serve as a preventative dietary measure to optimize microbiome and associated lipid metabolism during or prior to HFD.

Purpose: To explore the effect of vascular stress changes on endothelial function recovery and vascular restenosis inhibition, under the condition of dynamic degradation process of the degradable stent. Methods: Fitting the material parameters of the hyperelastic vascular constitutive relationship, the stress distribution of the intima of the blood vessel before the stent was implanted and during the dynamic degradation was calculated by numerical simulation. In vitro culture experiments were carried out, and the stretch ratios of the silicone chamber were set to 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%, respectively, to simulate the effects of different degradation stages on the growth state of endothelial cells. Results: After the stent was completely degraded, the circumferential intimal stress (strain) of the vessel was recovered to 0.137 MPa, 5.5%, which was close to the physiological parameters (0.122 MPa, 4.8%) before stent implantation. In vitro experiments showed that the endothelial cell survival rate was the highest under the condition of circumferential stress (strain) of 0.1 MPa, 5%, and all adhesion growth could be achieved. Conclusions: With the occurrence of degradation process of the stent, the circumferential stress (strain) of the intima was recovered to a range close to physiological parameters, which promotes the growth of endothelial cells. The recovery of intimal function can effectively inhibit the process of vascular restenosis. The results can provide a theoretical basis and experimental platform for the study of coronary intervention for the treatment of vascular restenosis.

Surgical repair of rotator cuff tears presents a significant clinical challenge with high failure rates and inferior functional outcomes. Graft augmentation improves repair outcomes; however, currently available grafting materials have limitations. Although cell-seeded decellularized tendon slices may facilitate cell infiltration, promote tendon incorporation, and preserve original mechanical strength, the unique fibrocartilage zone is yet to be successfully reestablished. In this study, we investigated the biological and mechanical properties of an engineered tendon-fibrocartilage-bone composite (TFBC) with cyclic tension (3% strain; 0.2 Hz). Decellularized TFBCs seeded with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BMSCs) sheets and subjected to mechanical stimulation for up to 7 days were characterised by histology, immunohistochemistry, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical testing, and transcriptional regulation. The decellularized TFBC maintained native enthesis structure and properties. Mechanically stimulated TFBC-BMSC constructs displayed increased cell migration after 7 days of culture compared with static groups. The seeded cell sheet not only integrated well with tendon scaffold but also distributed homogeneously and aligned to the direction of stretch under dynamic culture. Developmental genes were regulated including scleraxis, which was significantly upregulated with mechanical stimulation. The Young's modulus of the cell-seeded constructs was significantly higher compared with the noncell-seeded controls. In conclusion, the results of this study reveal that the TFBC-BMSC composite provides an ideal multilayer construct for cell seeding and growth, with mechanical preconditioning further enhances cell penetration and differentiation. The BMSC cell sheet revitalised TFBC in conjunction with mechanical stimulation could serve as a novel and primed biological patch to improve rotator cuff repair.

RESUMO

The Chinese fauna of Themus Motschulsky, 1858 is studied. Two new species are described: Themus (Haplothemus) quadratiformis sp. nov. (China: Shaanxi) and T. (H.) longideverticulum sp. nov. (China: Yunnan). Themus (Haplothemus) mishmiensis Wittmer, 1973 stat. nov. is elevated to the full-species rank from the subspecies of T. (H.) elongatior Pic, 1955, both species are redescribed. The male of T. (H.) quadratus Wittmer, 1983 and the female of T. (H.) weishanensis Kopetz, 2016 are described for the first time. The species are illustrated with aedeagus and habitus of male, abdominal sternite VIII and internal genitalia of female.

Flexor tendon injuries are common and pose a clinical challenge for functional restoration. The purpose of our study was to assess the adequacy of the turkey as a large animal model for flexor tendon injuries in vivo. Twenty-four male turkeys underwent surgical flexor tendon cut and repair. Turkeys were allocated to five groups postoperatively: (1) foot casted in extension and sacrificed after 3 weeks; (2) foot casted in extension and sacrificed after 6 weeks; (3) foot casted in flexion and sacrificed after 3 weeks; (4) foot casted in flexion and sacrificed after 6 weeks; and (5) foot casted in flexion for 6 weeks and then free roaming allowed for an additional 3 weeks before sacrifice. After sacrifice, digits were collected and analyzed for adhesion formation, healing at the macrolevel and histologically, and biomechanical properties-including friction, work of flexion, stiffness, and strength of repair. All turkeys survived anesthesia and surgery. Tendon rupture occurred in all extension casts and in 11% of those casted in flexion. Friction and work of flexion were significantly higher in the repaired digit than the control digit. There was a correlation between duration of immobilization and repair strength. Histologically, the tendon healed with tenocytes migrating into the gap and producing collagen fibers. We have, for the first time, studied flexor tendon injury and repair using turkeys in terms of anesthesia, surgical procedures, postoperative care, and animal husbandry. The findings regarding functional and histological results from this novel avian model were comparable to the most commonly used mammal model. © 2018 Orthopaedic Research Society. Genistein, but not daidzein, binds to copper(II) with a 1:2 stoichiometry in ethanol and with a 1:1 stoichiometry in methanol, indicating chelation by the 5-phenol and the 4-keto group of the isoflavonoid as demonstrated by the Jobs method and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. In ethanol, the stability constants had the value 1.12 × 1011 L²âˆ™mol-2 for the 1:2 complex and in methanol 6.0 × 105 L∙mol-1 for the 1:1 complex at 25 °C. Binding was not detected in water, as confirmed by an upper limit for the 1:1 stability constant of K = 5 mol-1 L as calculated from the difference in solvation free energy of copper(II) between methanol and the more polar water. Solvent molecules compete with genistein as demonstrated in methanol where binding stoichiometry changes from 1:2 to 1:1 compared to ethanol and methanol/chloroform (7/3, v/v). Genistein binding to copper(II) increases the scavenging rate of the stable, neutral 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical by more than a factor of four, while only small effects were seen for the short-lived but more oxidizing ß-carotene radical cation using laser flash photolysis. The increased efficiency of coordinated genistein is concluded to depend on kinetic rather than on thermodynamic factors, as confirmed by the small change in reduction potential of -0.016 V detected by cyclic voltammetry upon binding of genistein to copper(II) in methanol/chloroform solutions.

RESUMO

A second species of Qingryllus Chen & Zheng is described and illustrated, Q. jiguanshanensissp. n., from Sichuan, China. This new species is similar to Q. striofemorus Chen & Zheng, 1995, but differs from the latter by the posterior margin of pronotum being distinctly widened, the veins of tegmina yellowish-white only on lateral side of dorsal area, and the epiphallus distinctly widened posteriorly. A distribution map of the species of this genus and habitus photographs of the new species are presented.

The d-band center and surface negative charge density generally determine the adsorption and activation of CO2, thus serving as important descriptors of the catalytic activity toward CO2 hydrogenation. Herein, we engineered the d-band center and negative charge density of Rh-based catalysts by tuning their dimensions and introducing non-noble metals to form an alloy. During the hydrogenation of CO2 into methanol, the catalytic activity of Rh75W25 nanosheets was 5.9, 4.0, and 1.7 times as high as that of Rh nanoparticles, Rh nanosheets, and Rh73W27 nanoparticles, respectively. Mechanistic studies reveal that the remarkable activity of Rh75W25 nanosheets is owing to the integration of quantum confinement and alloy effect. Specifically, the quantum confinement in one dimension shifts up the d-band center of Rh75W25 nanosheets, strengthening the adsorption of CO2. Moreover, the alloy effect not only promotes the activation of CO2 to form CO2δ- but also enhances the adsorption of intermediates to facilitate further hydrogenation of the intermediates into methanol.
