RESUMO

A super absorbent was synthesized from calcium-aluminum waste residue of aluminum industrial using a facile hydrothermal method. The XRD results revealed that the main phase of hydrothermal product at 120 °C is CaSO4 ·2H2O, with a small amount of Al(OH)3. The as-prepared products were used to investigate the adsorptive applications in Congo red (CR) removal, and the results showed that the products treated at 120 °C had the best adsorption properties. The maximum adsorption capacity reaches about 1860.11 mg/g with a removal rate of 99.75%. Furthermore, the used adsorbent could be regenerated for at least four cycles through a calcination procedure, indicating its potential as an excellent adsorbent for the removal of CR dye from wastewater. The adsorption behavior was analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips isotherms, and the adsorption proved to be a multilayer adsorption. This facile method presented here may provide promise synthesis of high-effective and low-cost adsorbents from industrial solid waste and achieve the goal of "using waste to treat waste" in the future.

Heavy metal-containing gypsum is a widespread hazardous waste. In this work, H+ was found to be the most essential factor of the mineralizers in hydrothermal treatment to completely (≥99.8%) extract Cr(VI) from gypsum waste to the supernatant, where the significant growth (from several µm to several hundreds of µm) and perfection of the gypsum crystals were observed. Moreover, with increasing concentration of H+, the crystal growth (undergoing Ostwald ripening process) was accelerated and the phase transformation temperature of gypsum was decreased from 110℃ (at 0.2 mol/L of HCl) to 100℃ (at 0.3 mol/L of HCl), which are favorable to enhance Cr(VI) extraction efficiency. Pilot experiments further certified this method to be practicable even in ton-scale. This work proposes a practicable and universal method to completely extract Cr(VI) from gypsum waste, and would also inspire the recycle of gypsum waste containing other heavy metals, such as As, Pb, Cd, and Hg.

Solid wastes containing potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are widely generated around the globe. Critical concerns have been raised over their impacts on human health and the environment, especially for the exposure to PTEs during the transfer and disposal of the wastes. It is important to devise highly-efficient and cost-effective treatment technologies for the removal or immobilisation of PTEs in solid wastes. However, there is an inadequate overview of the global flow of PTEs-contaminated solid wastes in terms of geographical distribution patterns, which is vital information for decision making in sustainable waste management. Moreover, in view of the scarcity of resources and the call for a circular economy, there is a pressing need to recover materials (e.g., precious metals and rare earth elements) from waste streams and this is a more sustainable and environmentally friendly practice compared with ore mining. Therefore, this article aims to give a thorough overview to the global flow of PTEs and the recovery of waste materials. This review first summarises PTEs content in various types of solid wastes; then, toxic metal(loid)s, radioactive elements, and rare earth elements are critically reviewed, with respect to their patterns of transport transformation and risks in the changing environment. Different treatments for the management of these contaminated solid wastes are discussed. Based on an improved understanding of the dynamics of metal(loid) fates and a review of existing management options, new scientific insights are provided for future research in the development of high-performance and sustainable treatment technologies for PTEs in solid wastes.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated with Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP) is a clinical complex with unsatisfying treatment efficacy and poor prognosis which is difficult to be diagnosed at early stage. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical features of SLE with PCP, recognize the early onset indicating factors, and evaluate the treatment efficacy of combined caspofungin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (coSMZ).We reviewed data of 9 patients admitted with SLE-PCP and treated with caspofungin combined with coSMZ at Tangshan Gongren Hospital from January 2013 to December 2017. Patients' clinical manifestation and laboratory data [leucocyte, lymphocyte, cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4)T cell, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), blood gas, etc] were compared before and after treatments. And the early onset factors of SLE-PCP, treatment efficacy of combined caspofungin and CoSMZ were analyzed.Among these 9 patients, 8 patients suffered renal impairment, and all of them had been taking prednisone in the past 3 months at an average dose of 29.4 ±â€Š13.6 mg/day. In addition, they had taken at least one kind of immunosuppressants. Laboratory data (leucocyte, lymphocyte, CD4T cell, PaO2, LDH) were remarkably abnormal at hospital admission, but they were improved significantly after 2 weeks of treatment, which is also statistically significant (P < .05), except that leukocyte had no significance change to the value at admission (P = .973). In addition, none of the studied patients died.The results of the study indicated that long-term use of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants, low CD4T cell count, and renal impairment are the early-onset factors for SLE-PCP, caspofungin, when combined with CoSMZ, it could be a promising and effective strategy to treat SLE with PCP.

The effects of fresh and dried Flammulina velutipes (FFV and DFV) on quality and sensory characteristics of Cantonese sausages were investigated. Sausage samples were prepared by adding 0% (control), 2.5% FFV, 2.5% and 5.0% DFV, respectively, and their nutritional compositions, free amino acid profiles, lipid and protein oxidation, color and texture properties were determined. Addition of F. velutipes significantly decreased fat content while increased free amino acid contents of Cantonese sausages. Total free amino acid contents of 2.5% FFV, 2.5% DFV and 5.0% DFV incorporation were 2.8-, 2.4- and 3.5-fold as compared to control, respectively. Lipid and protein oxidation of Cantonese sausages were effectively inhibited by the addition of F. velutipes. Both FFV and DFV addition decreased hardness and chewiness while showed different effect on yellowness of samples. DFV added at 2.5% exhibited the best overall sensory acceptance. Therefore, appropriate addition of F. velutipes may be an effective way to improve meat product quality and function.

The robustness in real-world complex systems with dependency connectivities differs from that in isolated networks. Although most complex network research has focused on interdependent undirected systems, many real-world networks-such as gene regulatory networks and traffic networks-are directed. We thus develop an analytical framework for examining the robustness of networks made up of directed networks of differing topologies. We use it to predict the phase transitions that occur during node failures and to generate the phase diagrams of a number of different systems, including treelike and random regular (RR) networks of directed Erdos-Rényi (ER) networks and scale-free networks. We find that the the phase transition and phase diagram of networks of directed networks differ from those of networks of undirected networks. For example, the RR networks of directed ER networks show a hybrid phase transition that does not occur in networks of undirected ER networks. In addition, system robustness is affected by network topology in networks of directed networks. As coupling strength q increases, treelike networks of directed ER networks change from a second-order phase transition to a first-order phase transition, and RR networks of directed ER networks change from a second-order phase transition to a hybrid phase transition, then to a first-order phase transition, and finally to a region of collapse. We also find that heterogenous network systems are more robust than homogeneous network systems. We note that there are multiple phase transitions and triple points in the phase diagram of RR networks of directed networks and this helps us understand how to increase network robustness when designing interdependent infrastructure systems.

Sn-based anode materials have become potential substitutes for commercial graphite anode due to their high specific capacity and good safety. In this paper, ultrafine Sn nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen and phosphorus codoped porous carbon nanorods (Sn@C) are obtained by carbonizing bacteria that adsorb the Sn electroplating sludge extracting solution. The as-prepared Sn@C rod-shaped composite exhibits superior electrochemical Li-storage performances, such as a reversible capacity of approximate 560 mAh/g at 1 A/g and an ultralong cycle life exceeding 1500 cycles, with approximately no capacity decay. The ultrastable structure of the Sn@C was revealed using in situ transmission electron microscope at the nanoscale and indicated that the Sn@C composite could restrict the volume expansion of Sn nanoparticles during the lithiation/delithiation cycles. This work provides a new insight into addressing the electroplating sludge and designing novel lithium ion battery anodes.

We address the existence and stability of off-site and on-site vortex solitons with a unit topological charge in space-fractional Kerr lattices. In contrast to the reported ordinary Kerr lattices, vortex solitons in the proposed space-fractional lattices are stable only in the intermediate region of propagation constant, and this region widens rapidly with the increase of a Lévy index. Under the same Lévy index, the stability range of on-site vortices is larger than that of off-site ones. In particular, for on-site vortex solitons, the upper edge of the stability range appears where the maximum of soliton power is located, which provides an effective way to identify the stability range of on-site vortices. Our results extend the study of vortex solitons into space-fractional systems and deepen the understanding of Kerr lattices in fractional dimensions.

Through controlling the phase transformation and chromium species under hydrothermal condition, the Cr(VI) was extracted fully from hazardous Cr(VI)-containing gypsum sludge, with a very high efficiency of more than 99.5%. Scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure, and density functional theory calculation results revealed that the dissolution-recrystallization of CaSO4·2H2O into CaSO4 was the key factor to fully release the encapsulated Cr(VI). Moreover, the mineralizer (persulfate salt) provided H+ and SO42- ions, the former made an acidic condition to transform the released CrO42- into the specie (Cr2O72-) with less similarity to SO42-, which further prevented the recombination of the released Cr(VI) with gypsum; and the latter was essential to accelerate crystal growth of calcium sulfate so as to enhance Cr(VI) extraction. This work would provide an instructive guidance to fully extract heavy metals from hazardous solid wastes via the control of crystal transformation and the pollutant species.

Real-time spectroscopy access to ultrafast fiber lasers opens new opportunities for exploring complex soliton interaction dynamics. Here, we have reported the first observation, to the best of our knowledge, of the entire buildup process of soliton molecules (SMs) in a mode-locked laser. We have observed that the birth dynamics of a stable SM experiences five different stages, i.e., the raised relaxation oscillation (RO) stage, beating dynamics stage, transient single pulse stage, transient bound state, and finally the stable bound state. We have discovered that the evolution of pulses in the raised RO stage follows a law that only the strongest one can ultimately survive and, meanwhile, the pulses periodically appear at the same temporal positions for all lasing spikes during the same RO stage (named as memory ability) but they lose such ability between different RO stages. Moreover, we have found that the buildup dynamics of SMs is quite sensitive to both the polarization state of intracavity light and the fluctuation of pump power. These results provide new perspectives into the ultrafast transient process in mode-locked lasers and the dynamics of complex nonlinear systems.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the quality and sensory properties of Cantonese sausages incorporated with dried straw mushrooms. Five types of sausage with the addition of 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% straw mushrooms were prepared, and their physicochemical traits and sensory acceptance were investigated. The results showed that incorporation of straw mushrooms improved the physical properties, significantly decreased peroxide value, increased the amount of amino acids and volatile compounds, and introduced new volatiles (aldehyde and ester compounds) to Cantonese sausages. Compared to sausages without addition of straw mushrooms, the amount of essential amino acids increased 8-fold, the P/S ratio of fatty acid increased to 0.46 similar to the recommended nutritional value, and the lipid peroxide value reduced 10-fold in Cantonese sausages with addition of 4% straw mushrooms. These results indicate that incorporation of straw mushrooms could be an efficient way to obtain nutritional and healthy Cantonese sausages.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism for the synergistic effect of interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4) and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) on tyrosinase (TYR) promoter.
 Methods: The synergistic transcriptional effect, subcellular localization, and protein-protein interaction for IRF4 and MITF were observed by luciferase assay, immunofluorescence, GST-pull down, and co-immunoprecipitation, respectively.
 Results: IRF4 and MITF proteins were co-expressed in the cell nucleus. IRF4 augmented the transcriptional function of MITF (but not the mutant MITF) to activate the expression of the TYR promoter, but with no effect on other MITF-specific target promoters. IRF4 alone did not affect TYR promoter significantly. No direct interaction between the two proteins was noted.
 Conclusion: IRF4 and MITF exert a specifically synergistic effect on activation of TYR promoter through IRF4-mediated upregulation of transcriptional function of MITF. This synergistic effect is mainly regulated by MITF; DNA might be involved in the interaction between the two proteins.

Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 µm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 µm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 µm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to -0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 µm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

The experiment was conducted to assess the protective effects of Momordica grosvenori extract (MGE) against lipid and protein oxidation-induced damage in vacuum-packed dried minced pork slices stored at room temperature for 21days. Antioxidant activity of MGE was evaluated by measuring its radical scavenging activities and reducing power with progressive concentrations from 40 to 200g/L. MGE was added to the dried minced pork slices at 7, 10 or 15g/100g. Results showed that inclusion of MGE in dried minced pork slice significantly delayed the formation of hexanal, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and carbonyls and reduced the sulfhydryl loss in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.05), indicating that MGE exerted a protective effect against lipids and protein oxidation. Concomitantly, an intense increase of redness and loss of lightness and yellowness was found to take place (P<0.05), though it exhibited little negative effects on the sensory properties of slices. Mogrosides, the main bioactive components in M. grosvenori, decreased primarily during processing while they were relatively stable during storage under vacuum condition, room temperature. All these results demonstrated MGE had great potential as a natural antioxidant used in meat products.

When controlling a complex networked system it is not feasible to control the full network because many networks, including biological, technological, and social systems, are massive in size and complexity. But neither is it necessary to control the full network. In complex networks, the giant connected components provide the essential information about the entire system. How to control these giant connected components of a network remains an open question. We derive the mathematical expression of the degree distributions for four types of giant connected components and develop an analytic tool for studying the controllability of these giant connected components. We find that for both Erdos-Rényi (ER) networks and scale-free (SF) networks with p fraction of remaining nodes, the minimum driver node density to control the giant component first increases and then decreases as p increases from zero to one, showing a peak at a critical point p=p_{m}. We find that, for ER networks, the peak value of the driver node density remains the same regardless of its average degree 〈k〉 and that it is determined by p_{m}〈k〉. In addition, we find that for SF networks the minimum driver node densities needed to control the giant components of networks decrease as the degree distribution exponents increase. Comparing the controllability of the giant components of ER networks and SF networks, we find that when the fraction of remaining nodes p is low, the giant in-connected, out-connected, and strong-connected components in ER networks have lower controllability than those in SF networks.

All the optical properties of materials are derived from dielectric function. In spectral region where the dielectric permittivity approaches zero, known as epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) region, the propagating light within the material attains a very high phase velocity, and meanwhile the material exhibits strong optical nonlinearity. The interplay between the linear and nonlinear optical response in these materials thus offers unprecedented pathways for all-optical control and device design. Here the authors demonstrate ultrafast all-optical modulation based on a typical ENZ material of indium tin oxide (ITO) nanocrystals (NCs), accessed by a wet-chemistry route. In the ENZ region, the authors find that the optical response in these ITO NCs is associated with a strong nonlinear character, exhibiting sub-picosecond response time (corresponding to frequencies over 2 THz) and modulation depth up to ≈160%. This large optical nonlinearity benefits from the highly confined geometry in addition to the ENZ enhancement effect of the ITO NCs. Based on these ENZ NCs, the authors successfully demonstrate a fiber optical switch that allows switching of continuous laser wave into femtosecond laser pulses. Combined with facile processibility and tunable optical properties, these solution-processed ENZ NCs may offer a scalable and printable material solution for dynamic photonic and optoelectronic devices.

The functionality and structural properties of pig skin hydrolysates with different degrees of hydrolysis (DH, 10% and 20%) and microfluidisation (120MPa), prepared by pepsin and Alcalase® have been investigated in this study. Extensive hydrolysis can significantly improve the absolute value of the zeta potential and surface hydrophobicity. The particle distribution of hydrolysates decreased with increasing DH. The numbers of free sulfhydryl (SH) and disulfide bonds (SS) were significantly increased with increasing DH (p<0.05). Hydrolysates with a lower DH showed a better emulsifying property than those with a higher DH. Microfluidisation led to the transformation of structural and interfacial properties of the hydrolysates and increased the value of the zeta potential, S0, and gel strength. Microfluidisation results in limited breakage of chemical bonds, the number of SS and SH bonds unchanged in the treatment. These results reflect the functionality and structural properties of collagen-rich pig skin hydrolysates.

Monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with lamellar structure as that of graphene, has attracted significant attentions in optoelectronics and photonics. Here, we focus on the optical absorption response of a new member TMDs, rhenium disulphide (ReS2) whose monolayer and bulk forms have the nearly identical band structures. The nonlinear saturable and polarization-induced absorption of ReS2 are investigated at near-infrared communication band beyond its bandgap. It is found that the ReS2-covered D-shaped fiber (RDF) displays the remarkable polarization-induced absorption, which indicates the different responses for transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations relative to ReS2 plane. Nonlinear saturable absorption of RDF exhibits the similar saturable fluence of several tens of µJ/cm2 and modulation depth of about 1% for ultrafast pulses with two orthogonal polarizations. RDF is utilized as a saturable absorber to achieve self-started mode-locking operation in an Er-doped fiber laser. The results broaden the operation wavelength of ReS2 from visible light to around 1550 nm, and numerous applications may benefit from the anisotropic and nonlinear absorption characteristics of ReS2, such as in-line optical polarizers, high-power pulsed lasers, and optical communication system.

SCOPE: Epidemiologic studies assessing the association between dietary total flavonoids intake and the risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all causes have yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, we conducted a dose-response meta-analysis to investigate this association. METHOD AND RESULTS: We searched PubMed and Embase databases from January 1966 through May 2016 and examined the references of retrieved articles to identify relevant prospective cohort studies. The random-effect model was used to calculate the summary risk estimates and dose-response analysis was performed. Ten studies were included in the present meta-analysis. The relative risk (RR) of all-cause mortality for the highest versus lowest category of total flavonoids intake was 0.82 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72-0.92). Dose-response analysis showed that those consuming 200 mg/day of total flavonoids had the lowest risk of all-cause mortality. Furthermore, a marginally significant association was found between dietary total flavonoids consumption and risk of death from CVD (summary RR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.70-1.03; P = 0.099) and coronary heart diseases (summary RR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.54-1.02; P = 0.069), respectively. CONCLUSION: The meta-analysis provides strong evidence for the recommendation of consuming flavonoids-rich food to reduce risks of mortality from all causes as part of a healthy diet among general adults.

AIM: To explore the possible relationship between fecal microbial communities and non-anastomotic stricture (NAS) after liver transplantation (LT). METHODS: A total of 30 subjects including 10 patients with NAS, 10 patients with no complications after LT, and 10 non-LT healthy individuals were enrolled. Fecal microbial communities were assessed by the 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology. RESULTS: Different from the uncomplicated and healthy groups, unbalanced fecal bacterium ratio existed in patients with NAS after LT. The results showed that NAS patients were associated with a decrease of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes and an increase of Proteobacteria at the phylum level, with the proportion-ratio imbalance between potential pathogenic families including Enterococcaceae, Streptococcaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonadaceae and dominant families including Bacteroidaceae. CONCLUSION: The compositional shifts of the increase of potential pathogenic bacteria as well as the decrease of dominant bacteria might contribute to the incidence of NAS.
