RESUMO

Aim: KRAS SNPs may increase KRAS transcription and KRAS levels. SNPs of KRAS 3'UTR can affect carcinoma risk and prognosis. Materials & methods: The rs8720 and rs7960917 in KRAS 3'UTR for colorectal carcinoma (CRC) risk and survival were investigated in a case-control study. Association between SNPs and CRC risk, survival analysis were analyzed by an unconditional logistic regression model, log-rank test, Kaplan-Meier estimation, Cox regression model and one-way analysis of variance. Results & conclusion: The genotype CT of rs8720 was significantly increased risk of CRC, decreased overall survival and event-free survival, and KRAS mRNA and protein expressions were significantly increased in individuals with rs8720 CT, TT genotype. rs8720 may be an important factor in CRC development and prognosis.

Cognitive control is the coordination of mental operations under conditions of uncertainty in accordance with goal-directed behaviors, and plays a key role in the domains of executive control, working memory, and decision-making. Although there is emerging evidence of common involvement of the cognitive control network (CCN) of the brain in these domains, this network has mostly been linked to the processing of conflict, which is just one case of an increase in uncertainty. Here, we conducted an activation-likelihood-estimation-based large-scale meta-analysis of 289 functional magnetic resonance imaging studies in the three domains to examine the common involvement of the CCN in uncertainty processing by contrasting the high-uncertainty versus low-uncertainty conditions. We found a general association between increase in uncertainty and an activation increase in regions of the CCN, including the frontoparietal network (comprising the frontal eye fields, the areas near/along the intraparietal sulcus, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), the cingulo-opercular network (including the anterior cingulate cortex/supplementary motor area, and the anterior insular cortex), and a subcortical structure (the striatum). These results demonstrate that the CCN is a domain-general construct underlying uncertainty processing to support goal-directed behaviors. This article is protected by copyright. BACKGROUND: Recently, many kinds of cages for cervical fusion have been developed to avoid the related complications caused by tricortical iliac crest graft. The existing literature has reported the excellent clinical efficacy and superior fusion rate. However, various types of cages have their own disadvantages. Which bone graft material is the best choice for cage with the fewest complications? At present, there is still no conclusion. METHODS: By reviewing patients with 1 to 2-level cervical degenerative disease in our hospital with a novel cage made of allograft or polyetheretherketone (PEEK), we evaluated the efficacy and reliability of the new cage in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). From 2015 to 2016, a prospective review of 58 and 49 consecutive cases with spondylotic radiculopathy or myelopathy undergoing ACDF using allograft (group A) and PEEK (group B) cage were performed. The follow-up ranged from 12 to 40 months. Intraoperative index, clinical outcome and complications were recorded. Radiographs evaluated segmental and overall cervical lordosis, the height of the intervertebral space, interbody height ratio (IHR), cage positioning, and fusion state. RESULTS: A total of 134 cages were implanted. Compared to preoperatively, the visual analog scale (VAS) and neck disability index (NDI) were reduced postoperatively without any change during the subsequent follow-up in both groups. There was no migration or extrusion of the cages at the latest follow-up. There were 2 and 4 patients suffering dysphagia respectively. In both groups, the intervertebral height, IHR, segmental and overall cervical lordosis were significantly greater than pre-operation (P < .05) and were maintained at the last follow-up, but were not statistically significant (P > .05). The allograft group achieved a fusion rate of 100% (58/58) according to CT scans at 3 months post-operation, while PEEK group was 91.8% (45/49), which reached 95.9% (47/49) at 6 months and 100% at 12 months. In addition, the fusion state was maintained in all patients at the last follow-up. CONCLUSION: Our data showed that the new allograft cage is superior to the PEEK cage in providing a high fusion rate and fewer complications after 1-level and 2-level ACDF procedures. It may represent an excellent alternative to other cages.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic disease mainly caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The function of T cells usually decreased and even exhausted in severe TB such as multiple drug resistant TB (MDR-TB), which might lead to the failure of treatment in return. The mechanism of T cell dysfunction in TB is still not clear. In this study we set up a mouse model of T cell dysfunction by persistent M. tuberculosis antigen stimulation and investigated the therapeutic role of interleukin 2 (IL-2) in it. C57BL/6 mice were primed with Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and boosted repeatedly with a combination of M. tuberculosis fusion proteins Mtb10.4-HspX (MH) plus ESAT6-Ag85B-MPT64 <190-198>-Mtb8.4-Rv2626c (LT70) or MH plus ESAT6 and CFP10 with adjuvant of N, N'-dimethyl-N, N'-dioctadecylammonium bromide (DDA) plus polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (Poly I:C). Following persistent antigen stimulation, the mice were treated with IL-2 and the therapeutic effects were analyzed. The results showed that compared with the mice that received transient antigen stimulation (boost twice), persistent antigen stimulation (boost more than 10 times) resulted in decrease of antigen specific IFN-γ and IL-2 production, reduction of memory CD8+ T cells, over-expression of immune checkpoint programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), and impaired the protective immunity against bacterial challenge. Treating the T cell functionally exhausted mice with IL-2 restored antigen-specific T cell responses and protective efficacy. In conclusion, persistent stimulation with M. tuberculosis antigens induced T cell dysfunction, which could be restored by complement of IL-2.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of three surgical approaches for the treatment of cervicothoracic tuberculosis. METHODS: This is a multicenter retrospective study. We analyzed 74 patients with cervicothoracic tuberculosis who were treated in six institutions between January 2000 and January 2015. There were 37 male and 37 female patients, with an average age of 24 years (range, 5-62 years). The operative method was selected according to the indications. A total of 33 patients underwent one-stage anterior surgery (group A); 16 underwent a combined anterior and posterior surgery (group B) and 25 underwent one-stage posterior surgery (group C). Clinical outcomes, laboratory indexes, and radiological results were analyzed. RESULTS: All cases were followed up for approximately 36-96 months post-surgery (average, 39 months). At the last follow-up, patients in all three groups had achieved bone fusion, with pain relief and neurological recovery. No major vessel and nerve injuries were found during the operation. There were significant differences before and after treatment for visual analogue scale (VAS), neck disability index (NDI), and Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score (P < 0.001). Three surgical strategies significantly improved kyphosis (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The choice of operation for cervicothoracic tuberculosis should be selected based on the pathological changes, scope, and general physical condition of the patient. The indication for a posterior approach is narrow and it should be used selectively. The combined anterior and posterior approach involved a longer operating time, larger blood loss, and greater trauma, and also required a higher level of surgical skill. Therefore, the indications for this approach should be strictly controlled. Anterior approach surgery for the treatment of cervicothoracic tuberculosis showed excellent efficacy and fewer complications.

The social norms of fairness and reciprocity are fundamental to cooperation and constitute core behavioral principles. Warm glow theory suggests that cooperative behavior is driven by positive emotions, whereas inequity aversion theory proposes that cooperative behavior is necessary to avoid negative feelings. However, the precise characteristics underlying the enforcement (fairness or reciprocity) and violation (unfairness or betrayal) of cooperation remain elusive. Moreover, whether the neural mechanism of cooperation as a partner or a spectator is the same remains unclear. To resolve the above issues, we summarized the findings of human cooperation neuroimaging studies through a meta-analysis. Based on our results, cooperation enforcement activates reward-related brain areas, such as the striatum and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), only during other-cooperation. In contrast, cooperation violation is associated with the negative emotion-related insula (IA) in both self- and other-noncooperation. Thus, people expect others to cooperate rather than themselves; however, people are disgusted when cooperation is violated by themselves or others. Taken together, cooperative behavior might be mainly driven by a process designed to avoid negative emotion, which supports the inequity aversion theory but not the warm glow theory, thereby improving our understanding of cooperation theory.

OBJECTIVE: The immune rejection mediated by CD4+ T cell and antigen presenting macrophages is the leading cause of corneal transplantation failure. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) possess robust immunomodulatory potentials, and have been shown by us and others to promote corneal allograft survival. However, the immunological mechanism underlying the protective effects of BM-MSCs remains unclear. Therefore, in the current study, this mechanism was investigated in a BM-MSC-treated rat model of corneal allograft rejection, in the hope to facilitate the search for novel interventional targets to corneal allograft rejection. METHODS: Lewis rats were subjected to corneal transplantation and then received subconjunctival injections of BM-MSCs (2×106 cells / 100 µl PBS) immediately and at day 3 post-transplantation. The control group received the injections of PBS with the same volume. The clinical parameters of the corneal allografts, including opacity, edema, and neovascularization, were regularly evaluated after transplantation. On day 10 post-transplantation, the corneal allografts were collected and subjected to flow cytometry and high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). GO enrichment and KEGG pathways were analyzed. The quantitative realtime PCR (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were employed to validate the expression of the selected target genes at transcript and protein levels, respectively. RESULTS: BM-MSC subconjunctival administration prolonged the corneal allograft survival, with reduced opacity, alleviated edema, and diminished neovascularization. Flow cytometry showed reduced CD4+ T cells and CD68+ macrophages as well as boosted regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the BM-MSC-treated corneal allografts as compared with the PBS-treated counterparts. Moreover, the RNA-seq and qPCR results demonstrated that the transcript abundance of Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Associated Protein 4 (Ctla4), Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase, Receptor Type C (Ptprc), and C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 9 (Cxcl9) genes were increased in the allografts of BM-MSC group compared with PBS group; whereas the expression of Heat Shock Protein Family A (Hsp70) Member 8 (Hspa8) gene was downregulated. The expression of these genes was confirmed by IHC at protein level. CONCLUSION: Subconjunctival injections of BM-MSCs promoted corneal allograft survival, reduced CD4+ and CD68+ cell infiltration, and enriched Treg population in the allografts. The BM-MSC-induced upregulation of Ctla4, Ptprc, Cxcl9 genes and downregulation of Hspa8 gene might contribute to the protective effects of BM-MSCs and subserve the potential interventional targets to corneal allograft rejection.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the iliac vascular space in patients with lumbosacral tuberculosis and to evaluate the feasibility of anterior internal fixation for lumbosacral tuberculosis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed in 36 patients with lumbosacral tuberculosis. The preoperative three-dimensional computed tomography angiography images were analyzed for anatomical parameters. RESULTS: There were large variations among the anterior lumbosacral iliac vessels. Predominantly, the left iliac vein and the right iliac artery formed the two borders of the triangular iliac vascular space in the coronal plane. The mean distance between the iliac vessels straddle point and the inferior endplate of L5 was 15.01 ± 15.08 mm. In the sagittal plane, presacral abscess increased the distance between the posterior iliac vessel and the anterior vertebra. The distances on the left and right sides were 9.94 ± 6.03 and 10.15 ± 5.46 mm, respectively, at the inferior endplate of L5 and were 11.90 ± 6.97 and 11.68 ± 5.52 mm, respectively, at the superior endplate of S1. CONCLUSIONS: The space on sagittal plane occupied by presacral abscess may push forward the vessels and therefore provide opportunities for anterior internal fixation.

The timely warning of the germination of bacterial spores and their prevention are highly important to minimize their potential detrimental effects and for disease control. Thus, a sensitive and selective assay of biomarkers is most desirable. In this work, a nanoprobe is constructed by conjugating lanthanide upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) and eriochrome black T (EBT). The nanoprobe, UCNPs-TPP/EBT, serves as a platform for the detection of the anthrax biomarker, dipicolinic acid (DPA). In principle, DPA displaces EBT from the UCNPs-TPP/EBT nanoconjugate, resulting in a color change from magenta to blue because of the release of free EBT into the aqueous solution. The binding sites on UCNPs are partly preblocked with TPP as the placeholder molecule, leaving a desired number of binding sites for EBT conjugation. On the basis of this dye displacement reaction, a novel colorimetric assay protocol for DPA is developed, deriving a linear calibration range from 2 to 200 µM with a detection limit of 0.9 µM, which is well below the infectious dose of the spores (60 µM). The assay platform exhibits excellent anti-interference capability when treating a real biological sample matrix. The present method is validated by the analysis of DPA in human serum, and its practical application is further demonstrated by monitoring the DPA release upon spore germination.

Developmental theories posit that immature cognitive control and excessive reward-seeking capacities may be a risk factor for addictive behaviors during adolescence, but the control and reward capacities have rarely been assessed experimentally in adolescents with Internet gaming disorder (IGD) simultaneously. This electrophysiological study examined inhibitory control and reward processing in adolescents with IGD during a go/no-go task and a gambling task. Behaviorally, the adolescents with IGD exhibited lower inhibitory control, as measured by the accuracy of no-go trials, and more risk seeking, as measured by the proportion of risky choices, than did the controls. Compared with the controls, the adolescents with IGD exhibited decreased no-go P3 and blunted feedback-related negativity (FRN) amplitudes following gains (gain FRN) but not losses. Thus, IGD in adolescents is potentially driven by dysfunction of the control system and the approach system rather than the avoidance system, supporting the neurobiological model of adolescent development.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this multicentre, retrospective study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of different surgical approaches for treating thoracolumbar tuberculosis. METHODS: This study reviewed 132 patients with thoracolumbar tuberculosis in six institutions between January 1999 and January 2015 surgically treated by an anterior-only approach (n = 22, group A), an anterior combined with posterior approach (n = 79, group B), and a posterior-only approach (n = 31, group C). All patients were treated with standard antituberculosis drugs pre- and postoperatively and were followed regularly after surgery. Clinical symptoms, nerve function, and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate were observed, and kyphosis correction and bone fusion were evaluated by X-ray or computed tomography. RESULTS: At the last follow-up, all patients had achieved bone fusion, relief from pain, and neurological recovery. The Cobb angle was improved; however, the Cobb angle showed a degree of loss at the final follow-up after all three surgical approaches. Further comparisons revealed a difference in angle loss at the final follow-up among the three groups; groups B and C were superior to group A in maintenance of the correction. The posterior-only approach was characterized by a shorter operative time and reduced blood loss. CONCLUSIONS: Surgery by a posterior-only approach is superior to that by an anterior-only approach and anterior combined with posterior approach in terms of permanent kyphosis correction and spinal stability maintenance. Therefore, we recommend surgery by a posterior-only approach as the optimized treatment for thoracolumbar tuberculosis if the indications for this treatment are met.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the knowledge and practices of Chinese doctors in the management of osteoporotic fractures after the Chinese osteoporotic fracture guidelines update and aseries of medical education in 2017. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of doctors in 71 cities across Mainland China. Based on the 2017 Chinese guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporotic fractures, a questionnaire was designed and pre-tested for reliability and validity. Doctors were surveyed with the questionnaire after scientific meetings during February 2017 to January 2018 through WeChat or conference digital platforms or in paper form. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the responses to the questionnaire. RESULTS: Overall, 314 valid questionnaires were confirmed. Regarding diagnosis, 77% agreed that osteoporosis could be diagnosed once an osteoporotic fracture occurred; 83% believed that the bone mineral density criteria for osteoporosis diagnosis would be T ≤ -2.5 SD. For treatment, almost all (99.7%) agreed with anti-osteoporosis treatment being one of the basic principles of osteoporotic fracture treatment; 71.6% considered bisphosphonates as the most commonly used anti-osteoporosis drug; 97% believed that patients who have used anti-osteoporosis drugs should reassess osteoporosis after osteoporotic fractures instead of discontinue; 95% thought that the patients who did not use anti-osteoporosis medications before osteoporotic fracture should be treated with anti-osteoporosis drugs after fracture treatment as early as possible; 89% agreed that the standard use of bisphosphonates after osteoporotic fracture would not affect bone healing adversely; 59% believed the course of bisphosphonates treatment for osteoporosis would be 3-5 years, and 27% considered it to be 1-3 years. The patient follow-up rate was poor: 46% selected follow-up rate <30%; only 20% selected follow-up rate >50%. Only 31% of the hospitals had long-term management programs for osteoporotic fractures. CONCLUSIONS: Doctors generally adhered to the updated Chinese guidelines for osteoporotic fractures; frequent participation in medical education can help doctors to increase their awareness of osteoporosis as well as their acceptance and practice of the guidelines.

To investigate the effect of Fuyanshu Capsules combined with Western medicine antibiotics on symptoms and inflammatory factors IL-10 and IL-1ß in patients with pelvic inflammatory disease and its possible mechanism. Totally 112 patients with pelvic inflammatory disease of damp-heat stagnation treated since April 2017 to April 2018 were randomly divided into treatment group( group A,57 cases) and control group( group B,55 cases). The treatment group was given Fuyanshu Capsules for 56 d,and levofloxacin hydrochloride tablets and metronidazole tablets for 14 d. The control group was given Fuyanshu Capsules as its analogue. The curative rate,effective rate and inefficiency,serum IL-10 and IL-1ß levels were compared between the two groups. The curative effect was evaluated with McCormack score and traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) syndrome score. The recurrence rate and chronic pelvic pain were followed up after one menstrual cycle. It was found that the curative rate and effective rate of group A were higher than those of group B after treatment. After 28 d of treatment,there was a difference in the effective rate of TCM syndrome score between group A and group B( 62. 71% vs 8. 47%,P < 0. 01). After 56 d of treatment,serum IL-10 increased,while IL-1ß decreased in group A,which was significantly different from that in group B( P<0. 01). The recurrence rate of PID and chronic pelvic pain in group A were significantly lower than those in group B( P<0. 01). The results showed that Fuyanshu Capsules combined with levofloxacin and metronidazole could alleviate the clinical symptoms and signs of chronic pelvic inflammation of damp-heat stagnation type,reduce the recurrence rate of pelvic inflammation,relieve pelvic pain,and alleviate the inflammation status of patients by regulating the expression of IL-10 and IL-1ß in peripheral serum.

In order to illustrate the immunometabolic changes of fish during bacterial infection, grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) was injected with Flavobacteriumcolumnare(F.columnare) and then the immune response, nutrient metabolism and related signaling pathways were assayed from 6 h post injection (hpi) to 7 days post injection (dpi). After F.columnare injection, gill lamellae showed obvious fusion and higher mRNA expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The mRNA expression levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-8 in the head kidney were also significantly upregulated at 6 hpi and 3 dpi. Moreover, the expression of IgZ in the gill was significantly upregulated at 3 dpi and 7 dpi, while the expression of IgM in the head kidney was significantly upregulated at 1 dpi and 3 dpi after F.columnare injection. During bacterial infection, the systematic nutrient metabolism was also significantly affected. Hepatic glycolysis, indicated by GK mRNA expression and PK activity, was significantly upregulated at 1 dpi, while glucogenesis, indicated by PEPCK mRNA expression and enzyme activity, was significantly increased at later time, which resulted in the decreased hepatic glycogen content at 1dpi but increased glycogen content at 7 dpi in the experimental group. LPL, which catalyzed the lipid catabolism, showed decreased mRNA expression and enzyme activity at 6 hpi, while ACC, which was rate-limiting of FA synthesis, was significantly increased at 6 hpi, 3 dpi and 7 dpi. During this process, the nutrient sensing signaling was also significantly affected. TOR signaling in grass carp was significantly activated while ERK signaling was significantly inhibited after F.columnare infection, both of which might function as the sensor and regulator of fish immunometabolic changes.

Liquid-liquid transition (LLT) refers to the phase transition among thermodynamically distinct liquid states with identical composition in analogy to the polymorphic transition in solid. The growing awareness of its significance to understanding the nature of liquid also provokes curiosity about its potential impact on crystallization. Here, we report a first-order liquid-liquid transition above liquidus temperature in the melt of sodium acetate trihydrate using nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, and high-precision density measurements, which show negligible change in density associated with the observed LLT. Further, the kinetics and products of crystallization are significantly influenced by LLT, providing a new way for the controlling crystallization pathway and realizing crystal polymorph selection.

Purpose: To observe the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) against H2O2-induced oxidative damage in retinal Müller cells. Methods: Cultured human Müller cell line (MIO-M1line) were exposed to H2O2 for 2 hours. Cell survival was evaluated by Calcein AM cell viability assay. Dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA) + endoplasmic reticulum (ER) red fluorescent probe (ER-Tracker Red) staining was used to observe the expression level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in ER of cells. Mitochondrial membrane potential detection (JC-1) was used to observe cell membrane potential change and early apoptosis. Cell apoptosis was detected by Hoechst33258 staining. The expressions of Nrf2, HO-1 were documented by cell Immunofluorescence staining and Western blot analysis. Results: NBP effectively improved the survival ability of Müller cells shown by MTT assay. NBP effectively alleviated the morphological and apoptotic changes induced by H2O2 stimulation by Calcein AM assay, HE staining, Hoechst 33258, JC-1 staining. H2O2 induction increased the expression level of ROS, whereas, the treatment with NBP could remarkably lower the expression level of ROS. Cell immunofluorescence staining indicated that the fluorescence staining intensity of HO-1 in the NBP group was significantly higher than that in the control group. While the western blotting results showed that the expression level of HO-1 could be increased by NBP in a time-dependent manner. The translocation of Nrf2 in nuclei was observed within 2 h and Nrf2 was identified in nuclei for up to 48 h. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that NBP had a protective effect on H2O2-induced cytotoxicity in retinal Müller cells in vitro and that it was a potent activator of Nrf2 and HO-1signaling.

In insects, the ecdysteroid 20-hydroxyecdysone coordinates with juvenile hormone (JH) to regulate the process of molting, development and metamorphosis; however, this interaction is still unclear in the mites. In this study, we investigated the gene related to ecdysteroid and JH biosynthesis pathways, including four ecdysteroid and 11 JH biosynthesis genes. We examined their expression patterns during molting of different developmental stages of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), an important agricultural pest that feeds on more than 1100 plant species. The expression of ecdysteroid biosynthesis Halloween genes exhibited a positive zigzag-like pattern, with a peak after 8 h of molting and a drop 8 h after entering each quiescent stage. In contrast, JH biosynthesis genes expression displayed a negative zigzag-like pattern, with a peak at 8 h after entering each quiescent stage and a drop after 8 h of each molting. These opposite patterns imply that ecdysteroid and JH expression is coordinated during the developmental transition. Our data provide an initial perspective on the co-expression of ecdysteroid and JH biosynthesis genes to regulate this important developmental process in the two-spotted spider mite.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel bone cement-injectable cannulated pedicle screw augmented with polymethylmethacrylate in osteoporotic spinal surgery. METHODS: This study included 128 patients with osteoporosis (BMD T-score -3.2±1.9; range, -5.4 to -2.5) who underwent spinal decompression and instrumentation with a polymethylmethacrylate-augmented bone cement-injectable cannulated pedicle screw. Postoperative Visual Analogue Scale scores and the Oswestry Disability Index were compared with preoperative values. Postoperative plain radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scans were performed immediately after surgery; at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months; and annually thereafter. RESULTS: The mean follow-up time was 42.4±13.4 months (range, 23 to 71 months). A total of 418 polymethylmethacrylate-augmented bone cement-injectable cannulated pedicle screws were used. Cement extravasations were detected in 27 bone cement-injectable cannulated pedicle screws (6.46%), mainly in cases of vertebral fracture, without any clinical sequela. The postoperative low back and lower limb Visual Analogue Scale scores were significantly reduced compared with the preoperative scores (<0.01), and similar results were noted for the Oswestry Disability Index score (p<0.01). No significant screw migration was noted at the final follow-up relative to immediately after surgery (p<0.01). All cases achieved successful bone fusion, and no case required revision. No infection or blood clots occurred after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: The polymethylmethacrylate-augmented bone cement-injectable cannulated pedicle screw is safe and effective for use in osteoporotic patients who require spinal instrumentation.

PM2.5 air pollution is a significant issue for human health all over the world, especially in East Asia. A large number of ground-based measurement sites have been established over the last decade to monitor real-time PM2.5 concentration. However, even this enhanced observational network leaves many gaps in characterizing the PM2.5 spatial distribution. Machine learning provides a variety of algorithms to help deal with these large spatial gaps-combining both remotely sensed and in situ observation data to estimate the global PM2.5 concentration. This study used a PM2.5 data product of six regions from the results of an unsupervised self-organizing map (SOM) with optimized ensemble learning approaches to highlight the most important meteorological and surface variables associated with PM2.5 concentration. These variables were then examined via multiple linear regression models to provide physical mechanistic insights into the morphology of the PM2.5 annual cycles.

Approximately 50 million Americans have allergic diseases. Airborne plant pollen is a significant trigger for several of these allergic diseases. Ambrosia (ragweed) is known for its abundant production of pollen and its potent allergic effect in North America. Hence, estimating and predicting the daily atmospheric concentration of pollen (ragweed pollen in particular) is useful for both people with allergies and for the health professionals who care for them. In this study, we show that a suite of variables including meteorological and land surface parameters, as well as next-generation radar (NEXRAD) measurements together with machine learning can be used to estimate successfully the daily pollen concentration. The supervised machine learning approaches we used included random forests, neural networks, and support vector machines. The performance of the training is independently validated using 10% of the data partitioned using the holdout cross-validation method from the original dataset. The random forests (R= 0.61, R2= 0.37), support vector machines (R= 0.51, R2= 0.26), and neural networks (R= 0.46, R2= 0.21) effectively predicted the daily Ambrosia pollen, where the correlation coefficient (R) and R-squared (R2) values are given in brackets. Three independent approaches-the random forests, correlation coefficients, and interaction information-were employed to rank the relative importance of the available predictors.
