RESUMO

In this review, we will summarize model organisms used by scientists in the laboratory, including Escherichia coli, yeast, Arabidopsis thaliana, nematodes, Drosophila, zebrafish, mice and other animals. We focus on the progress in research exploring different types of E. coli in the human body, and the specific molecular mechanisms by which they play a role in humans. First, we discuss the specific transcriptional regulation mechanism of E. coli in cell development, maturation, ageing and longevity, as well as tumorigenesis and development. Then, we discuss how the synthesis of some important substances in cells is regulated and how this affects biological behaviour. Understanding and applying these mechanisms, presumably, can greatly improve the quality of people's lives as well as increase their lifespan. For example, some E. coli can activate certain cells by secreting insulin-like growth factor-1, thus activating the inflammatory response of the body, while other E. coli can inactivate the immune response of the body by secreting toxic factors.

Sertoli cells are indispensable for normal spermatogenesis and increasing evidence has shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) participate in the regulation of Sertoli cell growth. However, the functions and regulatory mechanisms of miRNAs in Sertoli cells of domestic animals have not been fully investigated. In the present study, we mainly investigated the regulatory roles of miR-499 in immature porcine Sertoli cells. The results showed that miR-499 was mainly located in the basement section of seminiferous tubules of prepubertal porcine testicular tissue. Overexpression of miR-499 promoted cell proliferation and inhibited apoptosis, whereas miR-499 inhibition resulted in the opposite effects. The PTEN gene was directly targeted by miR-499, and the expression of mRNA and protein was also negatively regulated by miR-499 in immature porcine Sertoli cells. siRNA-induced PTEN knockdown resulted in a similar effect as overexpression of miR-499, and abolished the effects of miR-499 inhibition on immature porcine Sertoli cells. Moreover, both miR-499 overexpression and the PTEN knockdown activated the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, whereas inhibition of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway caused immature porcine Sertoli cell apoptosis and inhibited cell proliferation. Overall, miR-499 promotes proliferation and inhibits apoptosis in immature porcine Sertoli cells through the PI3K/AKT pathway by targeting the PTEN gene. This study provides novel insights into the effects of miR-499 in spermatogenesis through the regulation of immature Sertoli cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of endogenous non-coding RNAs with a closed loop structure. These RNAs are produced by pre-mRNA through variable shear processing and are highly conserved. Such highly conserved molecules play an important role in biology, especially in cancer biology. With the development of experimental techniques such as circRNA microarray screening and high-throughput sequencing technologies, the mystery of circRNAs has gradually been unveiled and the values of function and application have gradually emerged. Among them, cancer-related circRNAs are the most eye-catching. Numerous studies have shown that some circRNAs were involved in the pathogenesis of cancer. This review systematically introduced the cancer-related circRNAs and their origin, formation mechanisms, functions, and applications in the diagnosis and treatment of sixteen kinds of tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) are rare and life-threatening complications of adult-onset Still disease (AOSD). PATIENT CONCERNS: We reported an interesting case of a 25-year-old AOSD patient with MAS and PAH, and the patient was found to have right anomalous pulmonary venous connection accompanied by an atrial septal defect. DIAGNOSIS: MAS was diagnosed as a complication of AOSD. PAH was contributed probably by right anomalous pulmonary venous connection. INTERVENTIONS: The patient dramatically improved with methylprednisolone (80 mg I.V. daily) plus supportive treatments, without interleukin (IL) inhibitors or ciclosporin A given. OUTCOMES: The patient's serum hepatic enzyme levels dropped and hemocytes rose within 1 week. CONCLUSION: Other causes need to be excluded carefully before giving a diagnosis of PAH with AOSD. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatments are pivotal to improve the quality of life and the survival of patients.

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor-modified (CAR) T-cell immunotherapy is a novel promising therapy for treatment of B-cell malignancy. Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and infection are the most common adverse events during CAR T-cell therapy. Similar clinical presentation of concurrent CRS and infection makes it difficult to differentially diagnose and timely treat the condition. METHODS: We analyzed the features of infection events during the first 30 days after CAR T-cell infusion (CTI) in 109 patients from three clinical trials (ChiCTR-OPN-16008526, ChiCTR-OPC-16009113, ChiCTR-OPN-16009847). Based on the dynamic changes of interleukin (IL)-6 and ferritin, we proposed the "double peaks of IL-6" pattern as a feature of life-threatening infection during the first 30 days after CTI. Meanwhile, we screened candidate biomarkers from 70-biomarker panel to establish a prediction model for life-threatening infection. RESULTS: In this study, 19 patients (17.4%) experienced a total of 19 infection events during the first 30 days after CAR T-cell infusion. Eleven patients (10.1%) had grade 4-5 infection, which were all bacterial infection and predominantly sepsis (N = 9). "Double peaks of IL-6" appeared in 9 out of 11 patients with life-threatening infection. The prediction model of three-cytokines (IL-8, IL-1ß and interferon-γ) could predict life-threatening infection with high sensitivity (training: 100.0%; validation: 100.0%) and specificity (training: 97.6%; validation: 82.8%). On base of the aforementioned methods, we proposed a workflow for quick identification of life-threatening infection during CAR T-cell therapy. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we worked out two diagnostic methods for life-threatening infection during CAR T-cell therapy by analyzing inflammatory signatures, which contributed to reducing risks of infection-induced death.

Gaofen-3 is a Chinese remote sensing satellite with multiple working modes, among which the scanning synthetic aperture radar (ScanSAR) mode is used for wide-swath imaging. synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry in the ScanSAR mode provides the most rapid way to obtain a global digital elevation model (DEM), which can also be realized by Gaofen-3. Gaofen-3 ScanSAR interferometry works in the repeat-pass mode, and image pair non-synchronizations can influence its performance. Non-synchronizations can include differences of burst central times, satellite velocities, and burst durations. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze their influences and improve the interferometric coherence. Meanwhile, interferometric phase compensation and rapid DEM geolocation also need to be considered in interferometric processing. In this paper, interferometric coherence was analyzed in detail, followed by an iterative filtering method, which helped to improve the interferometric performance. Further, a phase compensation method for Gaofen-3 was proposed to compensate for the phase error caused by the unsynchronized azimuth time offset of image pair, and a closed-form solution of DEM geolocation with ground control point (GCP) information was derived. Application of our methods to a pair of Gaofen-3 interferometric images showed that these methods were able to process the images with good accuracy and efficiency. Notably, these analysis and processing methods can also be applied to other SAR satellites in the ScanSAR mode to obtain DEMs with high quality.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hyperlipidemia-induced atherosclerosis is the major cause of heart attack and stroke in humans. However, pathological details and molecular mechanisms underlying early atherogenesis remain incompletely characterized. This study explored the early events of atherogenesis in a hypercholesterolemic zebrafish model in vivo. METHODS: We used transparent transgenic zebrafish larvae Tg(lysc:EGFP), Tg(mpx:EGFP), Tg(mpeg1:EGFP), Tg(flk1:EGFP) or Tg(lysc:EGFP/flk1:mCherry), together with fluorescently labeled control and high cholesterol diets (HCD), to dynamically investigate the early development of atherosclerosis with confocal in vivo. Endothelial cells with green fluorescence were sorted by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) to detect gene expression. Moreover, we treated hypercholesterolemic zebrafish model in vivo or human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) in vitro with rosiglitazone, an agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). RESULTS: We found that HCD-induced endothelial inflammation was an earlier pathological alteration than myeloid cells/neutrophils accumulation and lipid deposition in zebrafish vascular vessels of HCD-fed zebrafish. Endothelial inflammation was characterized by down-regulation of anti-inflammatory PPARγ and upregulation of pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß). Pharmacological treatment with rosiglitazone reversed the decrease in the expression of PPARγ and decreased expression of TNF-α and IL-1ß in HCD-fed zebrafish. Moreover, rosiglitazone ameliorated myeloid cells accumulation and lipid deposition in HCD-fed zebrafish in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperlipidemia-induced endothelial inflammation happens earlier than myeloid cell neutrophils accumulation in vascular vessels, and neutrophils accumulation is prior to lipid deposition during the initial stage of atherosclerosis. Early alleviation of inflammation induced by HCD would have a prophylactic effect for the initial development of atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Constipation is a common reason of poor bowel preparation, which negatively influences the quality of colonoscopy. Risk factors for inadequate bowel preparation in constipated patients remain unclear. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the high-risk factors that might influence the quality of bowel preparation in patients with functional constipation. METHODS: Consecutive patients with functional constipation who underwent colonoscopy between June 2016 and April 2017 were enrolled. A standard split dose of 4 l polyethylene glycol was used for bowel preparation. Patient- and procedure-related parameters were recorded. The primary outcome was an adequate rate of bowel preparation. Risk factors for inadequate bowel preparation were screened by multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 199 patients were included. Adequate bowel preparation was found in 62.8% (125/199) of patients. At multivariate analysis, Bristol stool form scale (BSFS) 1 [odds ratio (OR) 2.73, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.26-5.90; P = 0.011], rectal pain score during defecation < 2 (OR 4.14, 95% CI 1.22-13.97; P = 0.022), and starting-to-defecation interval ≥ 4 h (OR 3.83, 95% CI 1.34-10.91; P = 0.012) were risk factors for inadequate bowel preparation in patients with constipation. For patients with no, 1, 2, or 3 risk factors, the rates of inadequate bowel preparation were 11%, 23%, 49%, and 65%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: With the standard preparation regime, > 1/3 of patients with functional constipation had inadequate bowel cleansing. BSFS 1, rectal pain score during defecation < 2, and starting-to-defecation interval ≥ 4 h were identified as independent risk factors for inadequate bowel preparation in constipated patients. To predict the survival of appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma (AMA) by prognostic nomogram.A total of 3234 patients with AMA were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2015. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards (PH) regression analyses were used to generate independent prognostic factors. These variables were included in the nomogram to predict overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) at 1-, 3-, and 5- years. These data are validated both internally and externally. The consistency index (C-index) and calibration chart were used to estimate the accuracy of the nomogram.The study cohort was randomly divided into the training (n = 2155) and validation group (n = 1799). According to univariate and multivariate analyses, age at diagnosis, marital status, sex, histological differentiation, SEER extent of disease, number of local lymph nodes examined, whether they were positive, and surgical methods were independent prognostic factors for OS and DSS. These factors were incorporated into the nomogram. Internal validation in the training cohort showed that the C-index values for nomogram predictions of OS and DSS were 0.73 (95% CI 0.70-0.76) and 0.77 (95% CI 0.73-0.81), respectively. Similarly, the corresponding C-index values in the external validation cohort were 0.76 (95% CI 0.70-0.81) and 0.75 (95% CI 0.71-0.80). The Calibration plots revealed that the actual survival and nomogram prediction had a good consistency.Build a nomogram in the SEER database to predict OS and DSS in patients with AMA. It can provide accurate and personalised survival prediction for clinicians and patients.

An improved anti-noise morphology vision navigation algorithm is proposed for intelligent tractor tillage in a complex agricultural field environment. At first, the two key steps of guided filtering and improved anti-noise morphology navigation line extraction were addressed in detail. Then, the experiments were carried out in order to verify the effectiveness and advancement of the presented algorithm. Finally, the optimal template and its application condition were studied for improving the image-processing speed. The comparison experiment results show that the YCbCr color space has minimum time consumption of 0.094   s in comparison with HSV, HIS, and 2R-G-B color spaces. The guided filtering method can effectively distinguish the boundary between the tillage soil compared to other competing vanilla methods such as Tarel, multi-scale retinex, wavelet-based retinex, and homomorphic filtering in spite of having the fastest processing speed of 0.113   s . The extracted soil boundary line of the improved anti-noise morphology algorithm has the best precision and speed compared to other operators such as Sobel, Roberts, Prewitt, and Log. After comparing different sizes of image templates, the optimal template with the size of 140   ×   260 pixels could achieve high-precision vision navigation while the course deviation angle was not more than 7.5 ° . The maximum tractor speed of the optimal template and global template were 51.41   km / h and 27.47   km / h , respectively, which can meet the real-time vision navigation requirement of the smart tractor tillage operation in the field. The experimental vision navigation results demonstrated the feasibility of the autonomous vision navigation for tractor tillage operation in the field using the tillage soil boundary line extracted by the proposed improved anti-noise morphology algorithm, which has broad application prospect.

Large numbers of miRNAs are found in biofluid exosomes. We isolated ~50-200 nm diameter exosomes from four types of porcine biofluid (urine, plasma, semen, and bile) using serial centrifugation and ultracentrifugation procedures. A total of 42.15 M raw data were generated from four small RNA libraries. This produced 40.17 M map-able sequences, of which we identified 204 conserved miRNAs, and 190 novel candidate miRNAs. Furthermore, we identified 34 miRNAs specifically expressed in only one library, all with well-characterized immune-related functions. A set of five universally abundant miRNAs (miR-148a-3p, miR-21-5p, let-7f-5p, let-7i-5p, and miR-99a-5p) across all four biofluids was also found. Function enrichment analysis revealed that the target genes of the five ubiquitous miRNAs are primarily involved in immune and RNA metabolic processes. In summary, our findings suggest that porcine biofluid exosomes contain a large number of miRNAs, many of which may be crucial regulators of the immune system.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune syndrome characterized by various co-existing autoantibodies (autoAbs) in patients' blood. However, the full spectrum of autoAbs in SLE has not been comprehensively elucidated. In this study, a commercial platform bearing 9400 antigens (ProtoArray) was used to identify autoAbs that were significantly elevated in the sera of SLE patients. By comparing the autoAb profiles of SLE patients with those of healthy controls, we identified 437 IgG and 1213 IgM autoAbs that the expression levels were significantly increased in SLE (P < 0.05). Use of the ProtoArray platform uncovered over 300 novel autoAbs targeting a broad range of nuclear, cytoplasmic, and membrane antigens. Molecular interaction network analysis revealed that the antigens targeted by the autoAbs were most significantly enriched in cell death, cell cycle, and DNA repair pathways. A group of autoAbs associated with cell apoptosis and DNA repair function, including those targeting APEX1, AURKA, POLB, AGO1, HMGB1, IFIT5, MAPKAPK3, PADI4, RGS3, SRP19, UBE2S, and VRK1, were further validated by ELISA and Western blot in a larger cohort. In addition, the levels of autoAbs against APEX1, HMGB1, VRK1, AURKA, PADI4, and SRP19 were positively correlated with the level of anti-dsDNA in SLE patients. Comprehensive autoAb screening has identified novel autoAbs, which may shed light on potential pathogenic pathways leading to lupus.

A divergent strategy for the facile preparation of various enantioenriched phenylthio-substituted lactones was developed based on Lewis base/Brønsted acid co-catalyzed thiolation of homoallylic acids. The acid-controlled regiodivergent cyclization (6-endo vs. 5-exo) and acid-mediated stereoselective rearrangement of phenylthio-substituted lactones were explored. Experimental and computational studies were performed to clarify the origins of the regioselectivity and enantioselectivity. The calculation results suggest that C-O and C-S bond formation might occur simultaneously, without formation of a commonly supposed catalyst-coordinated thiiranium ion intermediate and the potential π-π stacking between substrate and SPh as an important factor in the enantio-determining step. Finally, this methodology was applied in the rapid syntheses of the bioactive natural products (+)-ricciocarpin A and (R)-dodecan-4-olide.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of different frequencies of electroacupuncture (EA) on motor function and expression of autophagy-related proteins microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3), etc. in spinal cord injury (SCI) rats, so as to reveal its underlying mechanisms and provide a reference for clinical application. METHODS: A total of 100 male SD rats were randomly divided into sham control, model, 2 Hz-EA, 100 Hz-EA and 2 Hz/100 Hz-EA groups(n=20 in each group). EA (2 Hz, 100 Hz or 2 Hz/100 Hz, 0.4-0.5-0.6 mA increased by 0.1 mA every10 min) was applied to "HuatuoJiaji" (EX-HN1, T9 and T11) for 30 min, once a day for 7 days. The rat's hindlimb motor function was assessed by using Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan(BBB) locomotor rating scale, inclined plane test and plantar imprinting test, separately. The histological changes and neuronal apoptosis of the spinal cord tissue were observed by Fluoro-Jade B (FJB) and Nissl staining, respectively. The expression of LC3, Beclin 1 and cleaved Caspase-3 proteins in the spinal cord was detected by Western blot. RESULTS: After modeling, the BBB scores and the angles of inclined plane on day 1, 3 and 7 were significantly decreased (P<0.001), and the number of FJB positive cells, and the expression levels of Beclin 1 and cleaved Caspase-3 proteins were considerably increased in the model group compared with the sham control group (P<0.001, P<0.05). After EA intervention, the BBB score and the angles of inclined plate on day 3 in the 2 Hz/100 Hz-EA group (rather than in the 2 Hz- and 100 Hz-EA groups), the BBB score and the angles of inclined plate on day 7 in both 2 Hz/100 Hz and 100 Hz-EA groups(rather than in the 2 Hz-EA group), and the expression levels of Beclin 1 and LC3-Ⅱ/Ⅰ in both 2 Hz/100 Hz and 100 Hz-EA groups (rather than in the 2 Hz-EA group) on day 7 were obviously increased (P<0.001, P<0.01, P<0.05), while the number of FJB-positive neurons in the 3 EA groups, and the expression of cleaved Caspase-3 protein in both 2 Hz/100 Hz and 100 Hz-EA groups and the LC3-Ⅱ/Ⅰ in the 2 Hz-EA group were obviously decreased relevant to the model group (P<0.001, P<0.05). The expression of Beclin 1 in the 100 Hz-EA group was obviously decreased relevant to the 2 Hz/100 Hz-EA group (P<0.05) .Nissl staining displayed appearance of cavities and fuzzy shape of Nissl bodies with light coloration in the injured spinal cord of model group, which was milder in both 2 Hz/100 Hz-EA and 100 Hz-EA groups. Plantar imprinting tests showed dragging gait prints in the model group due to disability in movement, and relatively distinct foot imprints in both 2 Hz/100 Hz and 100 Hz-EA groups. CONCLUSION: Both 100 Hz and 2 Hz/100 Hz-EA can effectively promote the recovery of hindlimb locomotor function of SCI rats, which may be related to its function in promoting autophagy of damaged nerve cells and in reducing neuronal apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Pulse methylprednisolone (MP) was routinely used before commencing standard immunosuppressive therapy for induction of remission in patients with dialysis-dependent anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) in spite of the paucity of evidence of benefit. The aim of this study was thus to determine whether the addition of pulse MP to standard induction immunosuppressive therapy in severe myeloperoxidase (MPO) -AAV patients who were on dialysis at onset is associated with an improvement in kidney recovery and patient survival. Furthermore, we analyzed the factors associated with restoration of kidney function and mortality in a single Chinese cohort. METHODS: 69 MPO-AAV patients who were on dialysis at the time of diagnosis were included in this study. The MP group (n = 30) received pulse MP (5-10 mg/kg/day) for 3 days before the standard immunosuppressive therapy. The Non-MP group (n = 39) had no MP pulses. The outcomes and adverse events between the two groups were compared. In addition, the predictive value of the clinical and histological parameters for kidney and patient survival was assessed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULT: There was no difference in patient survival, kidney recovery and the rates of adverse events between the two groups. A higher Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS) was shown to be a negative prognostic factor for kidney function restoration (p = 0.046, OR 0.811, 95% CI 0.660-0.997). BVAS was also demonstrated to be an independent predictor for both all-cause death (p = 0.007, OR 1.324, 95% CI 1.079-1.624) and therapy-related death (p = 0.003, OR 1.574, 95% CI 1.171-2.115). Patients' eGFR at the presentation of the disease was shown to be an independent predictor for therapy-related death (p = 0.027, OR 2.535, 95% CI 1.112-5.779). CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective study of MPO-AAV patients who required dialysis at presentation in a single Chinese center suggests that the addition of pulse MP to standard immunosuppressive induction therapy for remission appears to confer no benefit in terms of improving patient outcomes. Further research is required to determine the role of pulse MP in severe MPO-AAV.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) afflicts more than half a million people each year worldwide. It was reported that circ_0015756 was up-regulated in HCC, but the mechanism did not extensively studied. Methods: we collected 24 paired cancerous and noncancerous liver tissues surgically resected from HCC patients. HCC cell proliferation, invasion, migration and apoptosis in vitro were evaluated using MTT assay, Transwell assay, scratch test and Annexin-V/PI staining respectively. Interactions between circ_0015756 and miR-7, miR-7 and FAK were further validated by the luciferase reporter assay. Tumor xenografts of HCC cells with circ_0015756 knockdown were established in nude mice. Results: The expression level of circ_0015756 was increased and the expression level of miR-7 was diminished in cancerous liver tissues relative to noncancerous liver tissues. Circ_0015756 knockdown was shown to increase the expression of miR-7, reduce the proliferation, invasion, migration and resistance to apoptosis, and down-regulate the expression of FAK in HCC. We found miR-7 impaired expression of FAK to inhibit HCC cells, suggesting that miR-7 is responsible for the dysfunction of FAK. Importantly, we showed circ_0015756 could up-regulate FAK via targeting miR-7. These in vitro findings were reproduced in vivo that circ_0015756 knockdown decreased HCC xenograft growth. Conclusion: Our present study reveals a model of HCC development that is composed of circ_0015756, miR-7 and FAK. Modulation of their levels exhibits a promise in the treatment of HCC. The cylindrical resonator gyroscope (CRG) is a kind of solid-state gyroscope with a wide application market. The cylindrical resonator is the key component of CRG, whose quality factor and symmetry will directly affect the performance of the gyroscope. Due to the material properties and fabrication limitations, the actual resonator always has some defects. Therefore, frequency trimming, i.e., altering the local mass or stiffness distribution by certain methods, is needed to improve the overall symmetry of the resonator. In this paper, we made further derivation based on the chemical trimming theory proposed by Basarab et al. We built up the relation between the frequency split and the balanced mass to determine the mass to be removed. Chemical trimming experiments were conducted on three cylindrical fused silica resonators. The frequency splits of the three resonators were around 0.05 Hz after chemical trimming. The relation between frequency split and balanced mass established from experimental data was consistent with the theoretical calculation. Therefore, frequency split can be reduced to lower than 0.05 Hz under rigorous theoretical calculation and optimized chemical trimming parameters.

Aim: Treatment schedules of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for patients with early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are varied. The aim of this study was to clarify the optimal biologically effective dose (BED) for the treatment of stage I NSCLC. Methods: Research findings published after 1990 detailing the effects of SBRT on early-stage NSCLC patients were compiled from the Medline, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library. For comparative analyses, two groups were divided into moderate BED (100-150 Gy) and high BED (BED ≥150 Gy). Results: Two moderate BED studies and four high BED studies were selected for analysis. The results from the analysis of four moderate and high groups suggest that the 2-year local control rate was significantly lower in moderate BED group than that of high BED group (p = 0.04). Subgroup analysis by tumor size was also conducted. For patients with Stage IA disease, no difference in overall survival (OS) was found. No statistically significant difference was achieved in the instance of Stage IB tumor; however, the 2-year OS showed a trend in favor of high BED (p = 0.08). The remaining two studies, comparing 106 Gy (Stage IA) to 120-132 Gy (Stage IB) treatment, indicated a significantly higher 3-year OS in the 106 Gy group than that of 120-132 Gy group (p = 0.009). Conclusion: In patients with early-stage NSCLC treated with SBRT, our analyses suggested that a moderate BED, especially 106 Gy, is sufficient for the treatment of Stage IA tumor; although a high BED conferred no significant benefit to OS for the treatment of Stage IB tumor, a higher local control rate was achieved. Further detailed studies should be performed to explore the optimal BED for the treatment of Stage IB tumor.

As a new class of sustainable carbon material, "carbon dots" is an umbrella term covering many types of materials. Herein, a broad range of techniques was used to develop the understanding of hydrothermally synthesized carbon dots, and it is shown how fine-tuning the structural features by simple reduction/oxidation reactions can drastically affect their excited-state properties. Structural and spectroscopic studies found that photoluminescence originates from direct excitation of localized fluorophores involving oxygen functional groups, whereas excitation at graphene-like features leads to ultrafast phonon-assisted relaxation and largely quenches the fluorescent quantum yields. This is arguably the first study to identify the dynamics of photoluminescence including Stokes shift and allow the relaxation pathways in these carbon dots to be fully resolved. This comprehensive investigation sheds light on how understanding the excited-state relaxation processes in different carbon structures is crucial for tuning the optical properties for any potential commercial applications.
