RESUMO

Bornite (Cu5FeS4) exhibits great potential for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and few studies have been conducted on its electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we successfully fabricate NixS/Cu5FeS4 hybrid catalyst with interface structure between NixS nanoparticles (NPs) and Cu5FeS4 NPs. The NixS/Cu5FeS4 hybrid catalyst exhibits favorable HER performances in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte and demonstrates smaller overpotential and lower Tafel slope than bare NixS NPs and Cu5FeS4 NPs. The remarkable HER performances are attributed to the strongly coupling interface structure between NixS NPs and Cu5FeS4 NPs, which leads to synergistic effect optimizing the HER activity and enhancing the charge transfer during catalytic process. This work provides a promising strategy for the construction of Cu5FeS4-based hybrid catalyst and its application in energy systems.

Background: Rectal polyps is a major risk factor for rectal cancer. There is a need to explore a panel of preventive measures, as well as reliable biomarkers for screening of rectal polyps. Patients and methods: We conducted a case control study which aimed to explore the effects of regular consumption of ginsenoside Rg3, profiling of selected cytokines, and development of rectal polyps in a Chinese population. Results: Significantly higher levels of IL-4, MIP-1ß, FasL, TGF-ß1, and RANTES were detected in rectal polyp cases. Further, we found significant dose-response relationships between quartile-categorized levels of IL-4, MIP-1ß, FasL, and TGF-ß1, and risk of rectal polyps. The strongest associations for IL-4, MIP-1ß, FasL, and TGF-ß1 were observed for the highest quartile vs the lowest quartile with an OR of 1.78, 2.70, 1.49, and 2.36, respectively. Compared with non-Rg3 consumers, regular Rg3 consumers had a significantly lower risk of rectal polyps (OR =0.71; 95% CI: 0.55-0.92; P=0.009). We also found that Rg3 consumers had significantly lower levels of IL-4, MIP-1ß, FasL, and TGF-ß1 than non-Rg3 consumers, in both rectal polyp cases and healthy controls. Conclusion: These results indicate that regular consumption of Rg3 might prevent the occurrence of rectal polyps through decreasing the serum level of selected cytokines, including IL-4, MIP-1ß, FasL, and TGF-ß1. Further clinical trials and prospective cohort studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to validate the anti-inflammatory activity and the anti-tumorigenic role of Rg3.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have been widely studied as drug carriers to get sustained release behaviors, however, their application in sustained release of metoprolol tartrate (MPT) is limited. The possible reason is due to MPT molecule being bulky, while normal type MSNs like MCM-41 and SBA-15 have pore sizes of only 3-6 nm. In this study, two MCF-26 type MSNs were prepared with pore size of 11 or 15 nm, and used to conduct MPT release in comparison with MCM-41 and SBA-15. Both molecular simulation and MPT release experiments were performed to identify the pore size effect on adsorption and diffusion (release) of MPT in these MSNs. Finally, a kind of pH-sensitive MPT drug delivery system was obtained by coating the chosen MCF-26@MPT with an enteric polymer, which might find promising application in treating morning hypertension attack by orally administrating the drug delivery system before bedtime.

Background: The prognostic significance of galectin-1 (Gal-1) expression in cancerous patients has been assessed for several years while the results remain controversial. Thus, we performed the first comprehensive meta-analysis to evaluate the prognostic value of Gal-1 expression in cancerous patients. Methods: We searched Pubmed, Embase and Web of Science to recruit studies on the prognostic impact of Gal-1 expression in cancerous patients. Eighteen studies containing 2674 patients were involved in this meta-analysis until March 30, 2018. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated to estimate the effect using random-effects model. Results: The pooled results revealed that high Gal-1 expression in cancer tissue associated with a poor OS (HR = 1.79, 95% CI 1.54-2.08, P < 0.001). In the subgroup of tumor type, it's observed that high Gal-1 expression was significant correlated with poor OS in digestive cancers without heterogeneity (HR = 1.94, 95% CI 1.64-2.30, P < 0.001; fixed-effects model; I2 = 20.1%, P = 0.276). Conclusions: Our present meta-analysis indicates that high Gal-1 expression might be a predictive factor of poor prognosis in cancers, particularly in digestive cancers.

Pain, especially chronic pain, has always been a heated point in both basic and clinical researches since it puts heavy burdens on both individuals and the whole society. A better understanding of the role of biological molecules and various ionic channels involved in pain can shed light on the mechanism under pain and advocate the development of pain management. Using viral vectors to transfer specific genes at targeted sites is a promising method for both research and clinical applications. Lentiviral vectors and adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors which allow stable and long-term expression of transgene in non-dividing cells are widely applied in pain research. In this review, we thoroughly outline the structure, category, advantages and disadvantages and the delivery methods of lentiviral and AAV vectors. The methods through which lentiviral and AAV vectors are delivered to targeted sites are closely related with the sites, level and period of transgene expression. Focus is placed on the various delivery methods applied to deliver vectors to spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion both of which play important roles in primary nociception. Our goal is to provide insight into the features of these two viral vectors and which administration approach can be chosen for different pain researches. Recently, many studies have shown that pretreatment serum albumin can be closely linked to the prognosis of cancer patients, including those with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However, not all studies have reached the same conclusion. We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the prognostic value of pretreatment serum albumin in RCC patients. A total of 17 studies involving 6,447 patients were included in our meta-analysis. Our results indicated that a lower pretreatment serum albumin level yielded a worse overall survival (hazard ratio [HR]=2.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.92-3.13), cancer-specific survival (HR=2.22, 95% CI 1.87-2.64), and relapse-free survival/progression-free survival (HR=1.75, 95% CI 1.28-2.38). Generally, these findings were particularly pronounced when stratified by tumor type, analysis type, cut-off value, and HR-obtaining method. In conclusion, a decreased pretreatment serum albumin level implies a poor prognosis for RCC patients, and can be monitored for risk stratification and individualized treatment in RCC patients.

Mitochondria are organelles responsible for vital cell functions. p53 is a transcription factor that regulates the DNA stability and cell growth normality. Recent studies revealed that p53 can influence mitochondrial function changing from normal condition to abnormal condition under different stress levels. In normal state, p53 can maintain mitochondrial respiration through transactivation of SCO2. When stress stimuli presents, SCO2 overexpresses and leads to ROS generation. ROS promotes p53 inducing MALM (Mieap-induced accumulation of lysosome-like organelles within mitochondria) to repair dysfunctional mitochondria and MIV (Mieap-induced vacuole) to accomplish damaged mitochondria degradation. If stress or damage is irreversible, p53 will translocate to mitochondria, leading into apoptosis or necrosis. Neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and Alzheimer's disease are still lack of clear explanations of mechanisms, but more studies have revealed the functional relationship between mitochondria and p53 towards the pathological development of these diseases. In this review, we discuss that p53 plays the vital role in the function of mitochondria in the aspect of pathological change metabolism. We also analyze these diseases with novel targeted treating molecules which are related to p53 and mitochondria, hoping to present novel therapies in future clinic.
