Myostatin (MSTN) is primarily expressed in skeletal muscle and plays an important role in the regulation of muscle growth and development as well as fat deposition; however, little is known about the molecular mechanism through which MSTN regulates body fat deposition. Therefore, in this study, we sought to identify the signaling pathways through which MSTN regulates fat accumulation in pigs. MSTN knockout (MSTN-/-) pigs showed increased muscle mass, decreased fat mass, and a leaner body composition. In this study, we found that the adipose tissue of MSTN-/- pigs exhibits the characteristics of beige adipose tissue, and the mRNA expression levels of beige adipose marker genes, including UCP3, Cidea, and CD137, were significantly increased. Remarkably, the observed beige phenotype was not adipocyte autonomous but rather caused by muscle-secreted myokine interleukin (IL)-6. This occurrence results in increased AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation in adipose tissue, which subsequently activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1α and the conversion of white adipocytes to beige in pigs. Therefore, we concluded that MSTN deficiency leads to increased IL-6 secretion in skeletal muscle and activates AMPK in adipocytes, thereby increasing the beige adipose tissue in MSTN-/- pigs.

OBJECTIVE: To optimize the protocol of meniscus cell extraction to enhance the efficiency of cell suspension preparation and maintain a high cell viability for single-cell RNA sequencing. METHODS: We compared the efficiency of the routine cell extraction methods (short-time digestion and long-time digestion) and the optimized protocol for obtaining meniscus cell suspensions by evaluating the cell number obtained and the cell viability. Single-cell RNA sequencing datasets were analyzed to evaluate the stability of the cell suspension prepared using the optimized protocol. The reliability of the optimized protocol was assessed by comparing the single-cell RNA sequencing dataset obtained by the optimized protocol with published single-cell RNA sequencing datasets of the meniscus. RESULTS: The optimized protocol harvested a greater number of cells (over 1×105) than the routine protocols. The cell suspension prepared with the optimized protocol showed a cell viability higher than 80%, the highest among the 3 methods. Analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing datasets showed that the ratio of the mitochondrial genes was below 20% in over 80% of the cells. CD34+ cells, MCAM+ cells and COL1A1+ cells were identified in the datasets. Comparison with the publish datasets showed that the optimized protocol was capable of harvesting COL3A1+, COL1A1+, MYLK+, BMP2+, CD93+ and CDK1+ cells. CONCLUSION: Single-cell suspension prepared from the meniscus can be stably obtained using the optimized protocol for single-cell RNA sequencing using the 10× Genomics platform.

Objective: To summarize the clinical characteristics of children with interleukin-1 receptor associated kinase 4 (IRAK4) deficiency. Methods: The clinical data of a child with IRAK4 deficiency who was admitted to the Department of Neurology of Shenzhen Children's Hospital for several times from June 2019 to August 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Related literature up to January 2021 with the key words "IRAK4 gene variation", and "interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 4 deficiency" in PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang, and CQVIP databases were searched. The clinical characteristics of this disease were summarized and analyzed. Results: The boy was 6 years of age and had recurrent respiratory tract infections. He was improved after antibiotic treatment. His clinical manifestation included Streptococcus pneumoniae meningoencephalitis, multiple sclerosis, invasive discitis and inflammatory bone destruction. Family-based whole exome sequencing showed that the boy had a homozygous frameshift variation in the IRAK4 gene, NM_016123.3:C.540del (p.Phe180leufs*26), and both parents were heterozygous. A total of 23 cases were reported in ten English articles. Together with this case, there were 24 cases, including 13 males and 11 females. The age of onset was 8 days to 7 years. The main manifestations were recurrent invasive bacterial infection, including 11 cases with Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, 9 cases with Streptococcus pneumoniae and (or) Staphylococcus aureus septicemia, 1 case with Pseudomonas aeruginosa meningitis, 1 case of salmonella infection, and 1 case with Staphylococcus aureus skin abscess. Only 1 case had recurrent virus infection. There were 2 patients with autoimmune diseases, 1 with autoimmune encephalitis and the other one with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Among the 24 cases, 10 died (9 in infancy). Most of the surviving children were diagnosed early and received antibiotics preventively and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). Their susceptibility to infection decreased year by year, and could be close to normal children at the age of 14 years. Among the 24 cases, 21 cases had homozygous variation of IRAK4 gene and 3 cases had complex heterozygous variation. There were 15 kinds of variation, including 9 kinds of frameshift variation, 4 kinds of nonsense variation and 2 kinds of missense variation. One candidate variation hotspot was c.877 c>T (3 cases). Conclusions: IRAK4 deficiency mainly manifest as recurrent and invasive bacterial infection, with Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis or septicemia being the most common. A few patients are complicated with autoimmune diseases. The mortality rate is high in infancy, early diagnosis and treatment can avoid severe illness or death.

OBJECTIVE: To prepare the human bone morphogenetic protein-2(hBMP-2)/human insulin-like growth factor-1(hIGF-1)coating titanium(Ti)and assess its performance as a dental implant material. METHODS: hBMP-2 and hIGF-1 were coated to the smooth surface of a Ti plate, and its efficacy for promoting bone formation and bone integration was compared with a pristine Ti plate.The surface characteristics of the metal samples were evaluated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and by contact angle measurement.MG63 cells were seeded on the surface of the Ti plates, and MTT assay and alizarin red staining was used to examine the cell proliferation and formation of calcified nodules, respectively.Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)secretion of the cells was examined with ELISA, and cellular expressions of osteocalcin and osteopontin were detected with Western blotting for assessing osteogenesis. RESULTS: SEM examination showed that the surface of Ti with hBMP-2 and hIGF-1 coating presented with a radial pattern resembling snowflakes.The contact angles of non-coated Ti, hBMP-2-coated Ti, hIGF-1-coated, and hBMP-2/-hIGF-1-coated Ti samples were 83.2°, 54°, 56° and 54°, respectively.Compared with the non-coated Ti plate, the surface-modified Ti samples showed a significantly smaller contact angle (P=0.032, 0.029, and 0.028), indicating a good hydrophilicity of the samples.MTT assay showed that MG63 cells grew well on the surface of the coated Ti plates.The hBMP-2/IGF-1 coating significantly induced cellular secretion of ALP(P=0.021, 0.014)and obviously promoted osteogenesis of MG63 cells (P < 0.05).Western blotting results showed that hBMP-2/IGF-1 coating significantly enhanced the expressions of osteocalcin and osteopontin in the seeded cells (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: hBMP-2 and hIGF-1 coating of Ti material can promote osteogenesis of the cells seeded on its surface to improve the performance of such Ti material as dental implants.

Objective: To explore the relationship between the daily incidence of human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) and meteorological parameters in the main urban area of Chongqing. Methods: This study took 3 107 children hospitalized with acute lower respiratory tract infections from June 2009 to June 2019 in department of Respiratory medicine, Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University (CHCMU). Nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) was collected on the day of admission to detect HRSV and common respiratory virus; combined with the meteorological data of the main urban area of ​​Chongqing during the same period, the correlation and distribution lag nonlinear model analysis of the daily incidence of HRSV and meteorological parameters were carried out. Results: Among 3 107 children, HRSV positive accounted for 34.53% (1 073 cases), the age was 6 (3, 13) months, and males accounted for 64.31% (690 cases). The daily incidence of HRSV was negatively correlated with minimum temperature (r=-0.220, P<0.001), maximum temperature (r=-0.221, P<0.001), average temperature (r=-0.221, P<0.001) and precipitation (r=-0.052, P<0.001), and positively correlated with sunshine time (r=0.011, P<0.001) and average relative humidity (r=0.095, P<0.001). Compared with the reference temperature (20 ℃), when the lowest temperature of 6-10 ℃ lags for 4-8 d, the RR value of HRSV was 1.11-1.14, and when the lowest temperature of 5-19 ℃ lags for 5 d and 2-19 ℃ lags for 10 d, the RR values were 1.02-1.14 and 1.00-1.03. When the cumulative lag is 5, 10, 15 and 21 d, compared with the reference temperature (20 ℃), the RR (95%CI) values at the lowest temperature of 10.4 ℃ were 1.93 (1.08-3.46), 3.49 (1.64-7.45), 5.00 (2.01-12.46) and 6.69 (2.18-20.48); the RR (95%CI) values of the lowest temperature of 22.1 ℃ were 0.87 (0.77-0.98), 0.77 (0.66-0.90), 0.74 (0.62-0.89) and 0.68 (0.55-0.85). In the cumulative effect, compared with the reference temperature (20 ℃), the gender stratification showed that the maximum RR (95%CI) values of the lowest temperature for boys and girls under different lag days were 7.24 (1.84-28.51) and 2.19 (1.07-4.46), the age stratification showed that the maximum RR (95%CI) values of the lowest temperature for children<6 months old and children ≥6 months old under different lag days were 4.72 (1.05-21.23) and 11.98 (1.70-84.35). Conclusions: In the main urban area of Chongqing, the daily incidence of HRSV in children is correlated with climatic parameters. Among them, the lowest temperature has a delayed and cumulative effect on HRSV infection. 6-10 ℃ has a greater impact on the incidence of HRSV when the lag is 4-8 days. The effect has a more obvious impact on the incidence of HRSV in boys and children ≥ 6 months.

Objective: To evaluate the functional outcomes of repairing parietal and occipital defect after surgery for cancer by lower trapezius myocutaneous flap with latissimus dorsi. Methods: Retrospective analyses of eight patients were performed who underwent repairing parietal and occipital defects with dural exposure after surgeries for cancers from January 2015 to January 2020 in Tianjin Institute of Occupational Disease Control and Prevention (Tianjin Workers Hospital) and the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, including 6 males and 2 females aged from 26 to 68 years old. The method for harvesting the lower trapezius myocutaneous flap was improved and thus the lower trapezius myocutaneous flaps with latissimus dorsi were used for repairing the parietal and occipital defects. The area of myocutaneous flap depended on the size of defect. Results: The defects were repaired with the flaps with areas ranging from 12 cm×8 cm to 17 cm×15 cm. Seven flaps survived after surgery and the wounds were healed. Blisters and bruise were observed at the distal end of one flap 2 days after operation, which were cured with dressing change for 10 days. All cases were followed-up for six months, with normal functions of the shoulder joints, aside from mild hypertrophic scar in donor site on the back. Conclusion: It is feasible to use the lower trapezius myocutaneous flap with latissimus dorsi to repair the parietal and occipital defect after surgery for cancer, and the clinical effect is satisfactory.

The study examines the problem whether pyroptosis of U87-MG glioblastoma cells can result from activation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) by a local anesthetic. Glioblastoma cells exposed to various concentrations of typical local anesthetic lidocaine demonstrated augmented cytosolic flux of Ca2+, while suppression of CaMKII expression with the corresponding siRNA significantly inhibited this effect in cells treated with 2 mM lidocaine. Lidocaine up-regulated the expression of mRNA caspase-3 and gasdermin GSDME proteins, whereas silencing of CaMKII gene with siRNA significantly moderated this effect. In addition, lidocaine inhibited proliferation of U87-MG cells, and this effect was prevented by silencing CaMKII gene. Thus, lidocaine activated protein kinase CaMKII, which phosphorylated TRPV1 ion channels and induced calcium overload of U87-MG glioblastoma cells, thereby provoking their pyroptosis.

To explored the difference of goose fatty liver formation induced-by different types of sugar from the intestinal physiology and the gut microflora, an integrated analysis of intestinal physiology and gut microbiota metagenomes was performed using samples collected from the geese including the normal-feeding geese and the overfed geese which were overfed with maize flour or overfeeding dietary supplementation with 10% sugar (glucose, fructose or sucrose, respectively), respectively. The results showed that the foie gras weight of the fructose group and the sucrose group was heavier (P < 0.05) than other groups. Compared with the control group, the ileum weight was significantly higher (P < 0.01), and the cecum weight was significantly lower in the sugar treatment groups (P < 0.001). Compared with the control group, the ratio of villi height to crypt depth in the fructose group was the highest in jejunum (P < 0.05); the trypsin activity of the ileum was higher in the fructose group and the sucrose group (P < 0.05). At the phylum level, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the main intestinal flora of geese; and the abundance of Firmicutes in the jejunum was higher in the sugar treatment groups than that of the maize flour group. At the genus level, the abundance of Lactobacillus in the jejunum was higher (P < 0.05) in the sugar treatment groups than that of the maize flour group. In conclusion, forced-feeding diet supplementation with sugar induced stronger digestion and absorption capacity, increased the abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes and the abundance of Lactobacillus (especially fructose and sucrose) in the gut. So, the fructose and sucrose had higher induction on hepatic steatosis in goose fatty liver formation.

Left displaced abomasum (LDA) leads to substantial changes in the metabolism of dairy cows. Surgical correction of LDA can rapidly improve the health of cows; however, changes in metabolism following surgery are rarely described. To investigate the changes of plasma metabolome in cows with LDA before and after surgical correction, blood samples were collected from 10 healthy postpartum cows and 10 cows with LDA on the day of diagnosis, then again from the LDA cows 14 d after surgery. Serum nonesterified fatty acid, ß-hydroxybutyric acid, cortisol and histamine concentration, and antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) activities were evaluated, and the metabolic profile in plasma was analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The results demonstrated that cows with LDA experienced severe negative energy balance and oxidative stress, which can be improved by surgical correction. The metabolic profile was analyzed using multidimensional and univariate statistical analyses, and different metabolites were identified. In total, 102 metabolites differed between cows with LDA and healthy cows. After surgical correction, 65 metabolites changed in cows with LDA, compared with these cows during the LDA event. Following surgical correction, AA levels tended to increase, and lipid levels tended to decrease in cows with LDA. Pathway analysis indicated marked changes in linoleic acid metabolism, Arg biosynthesis, and Gly, Ser, and Thr metabolism in cows at the onset of LDA and following surgical correction. Surgical treatment reversed the changes in AA and lipid metabolism in cows with LDA.

A pressing need in low energy spintronics is two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets with Curie temperature above the liquid-nitrogen temperature (77 K), and sizeable magnetic anisotropy. We studied Mn3Br8 monolayer which is obtained via inducing Mn vacancy at 1/4 population in MnBr2 monolayer. Such defective configuration is designed to change the coordination structure of the Mn-d5 and achieve ferromagnetism with sizeable magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). Our calculations show that Mn3Br8 monolayer is a ferromagnetic (FM) half-metal with Curie temperature of 130 K, large MAE of - 2.33 meV per formula unit, and atomic magnetic moment of 13/3µB for the Mn atom. Additionally, Mn3Br8 monolayer maintains to be FM under small biaxial strain, whose Curie temperature under 5% compressive strain is 160 K. Additionally, both biaxial strain and carrier doping make the MAE increases, which mainly contributed by the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MCE). Our designed defective structure of MnBr2 monolayer provides a simple but effective way to achieve ferromagnetism with large MAE in 2D materials.

OBJECTIVE: Macrophages play an important part in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). Our objective was to determine the effects of α-defensin-1 on macrophage polarization and consequently OA. METHODS: OA synovial tissue and synovial fluid were assessed for the presence of M1 (CD68+CD16+CD206-) and M2 (CD68+CD206+CD16-) macrophages by flow cytometry. M0, M1, and M2 macrophages were co-cultured with OA chondrocytes to determine their influence on chondrogenic phenotype. Polarization of THP-1 activated monocytes from M1 to M2 in response to α-defensin-1 was evaluated by flow cytometry, RT-PCR and RNA sequencing. Effects of intra-articular α-defensin-1 in vivo were evaluated in a rat meniscal/ligamentous injury (MLI) model. RESULTS: The quantity of M1 exceeded M2 polarized macrophages in human OA synovial tissue (mean difference 26.1% [13.6-38.6%], P < 0.001) and fluid (mean difference 10.5% [5.0-16.1%], P = 0.003). M1 to M2 polarization in vitro was most effectively promoted with 10 ng/mL α-defensin-1. Compared with untreated macrophages, the α-defensin-1 polarized macrophages modified co-cultured OA chondrocytes from a pro-catabolic state to a pro-anabolic (regenerative-like) state based on expression of COL2A1, ACN, MMP3, MMP13 and ADAMTS5. Intra-articular α-defensin-1 decreased severity of cartilage damage and synovitis in the MLI rat model. RNAseq analyses suggested insulin and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways in the chondroprotective α-defensin-1 mechanism of action. CONCLUSION: α-defensin-1 promotes M1 to M2 macrophage polarization in vitro, has beneficial effects on chondrocytes indirectly via M2 macrophage polarization, and attenuates the severity of OA in vivo, suggesting it might be a candidate treatment for OA.

To analyze the clinical characteristics and prognosis of endometrial cancer patients with lymph node metastasis to provide a reference for lymphadenectomy in endometrial cancer. The data used in this study were extracted from a tertiary hospital in Guangxi, China based on the hospital information system. 1219 patients with endometrial malignancy who were treated in our hospital. The lymph node metastasis rate was 9.8%. The metastasis rate of the abdominal aorta + pelvic lymph nodes (56.7%) was significantly higher than that of the pelvic (24.2%) or para-aortic (19.2%) lymph nodes alone. The proportion of postmenopausal patients with lymph node metastasis was higher than that of premenopausal patients. The proportion of patients with lymph node metastasis with vaginal and uterus involvement, HPV detection, Thinprep Cytologic Testresults, CRP level <10 ug/mL, G3 tumor grade, postoperative pathology indicating cervical invasion, lymphovascular invasion, and muscular infiltration depth > 1/2 was higher than that of patients without lymph node metastasis. The proportion of endometrial cancer patients with lymph node metastasis with CA125 ≥ 35 U/ml was higher than that of those with CA125 < 35 U/ml. The lymph node-positive rate is related to tissue differentiation, lymphangitic infiltration, cervical invasion, muscle infiltration depth > 1/2, and CA125 level. The metastasis rate of pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes is higher than that of pelvic lymph nodes or para-aortic lymph nodes alone. There was no statistically significant difference in the overall survival rate among the three groups.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has shown a good prognostic value in many different type of malignancies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between NLR and the outcome of critically ill patients with cancer. METHODS: We performed a single-institution, retrospective study of 1317 adult critically ill patients with cancer and determined the optimal cut-off for NLR by X-tile software. Propensity score matching (PSM) and inverse probabilities of treatment weighting (IPTW) were performed to control confounders. Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the relationship between NLR and 28-day, 6-month and 1-year all-cause mortality. Kaplan-Meier method, subgroup analysis, and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis were applied to assess the prognostic value of NLR. RESULTS: The cut-off value for NLR was 17.6. Cox proportional hazards model demonstrated that high NLR (> 17.6) was independently associated with 28-day, 6-month and 1-year all-cause mortality with hazard ratio (HR) of 1.58 (1.29, 1.94), 1.51 (1.28, 1.77) and 1.45 (1.25, 1.69), respectively. The results were consistent with survival analyses (p < 0.001, log-rank test). The ROC analyses showed that the discrimination abilities of NLR were better than other blood-based biomarkers. CONCLUSION: NLR is a promising prognostic indicator of survival in unselected critical ill patients with cancer.

AIM: The present study examined the associations between night-time sleep duration, midday napping duration and bedtime, and fasting glucose levels, and whether or not such associations are dependent on gender and age. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional analysis of 172,901 adults aged≥40 years living in mainland China. Sleep duration was obtained by self-reports of bedtime at night, waking-up time the next morning and average napping duration at midday. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG)≥7.0mmol/L was defined as hyperglycaemia. Independent associations between night-time sleep duration, midday naptime duration and bedtime with hyperglycaemia were evaluated using regression models. RESULTS: Compared with night-time sleep durations of 6-7.9h, both short (<6h) and long (≥8h) night-time sleep durations were significantly associated with an increased risk of hyperglycaemia in women [odds ratio (OR): 1.12, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.29 and OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.08-1.21, respectively], and revealed a U-shaped distribution of risk in women and no significant association in men. Long midday nap durations (≥1h) were significantly but weakly associated with hyperglycaemia (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01-1.09) compared with no napping without interactions from gender or age, whereas the association between bedtime and fasting glucose levels did vary according to gender and age. CONCLUSION: Night-time sleep duration, midday napping duration and bedtime were all independently associated with the risk of hyperglycaemia, and some of the associations between these sleep characteristics and hyperglycaemia were gender- and age-dependent.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to elucidate how sevoflurane affects the malignant progression of gastric cancer (GC) and its pharmacological mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dose-dependent and time-dependent regulations of sevoflurane on proliferation inhibition rate in AGS and BGC-823 cells were examined, and thus the optimal dose and treatment time of sevoflurane on GC cells were selected. Subsequently, proliferative and migratory abilities in sevoflurane-induced AGS and BGC-823 cells (3.4% sevoflurane induction for 6 h) were detected by CCK-8 and transwell assay, respectively. After sevoflurane induction, relative levels of miR-34a and TGIF2 in GC cells were determined by qRT-PCR and Western blot. Regulatory effects of miR-34a on GC cell phenotypes were also assessed. Furthermore, the in vivo function of miR-34a in GC growth was explored by generating xenografted GC in nude mice. RESULTS: Sevoflurane induction time-dependently and dose-dependently enhanced proliferation inhibition rate in AGS and BGC-823 cells. The proliferative and migratory abilities in GC cells induced with 3.4% sevoflurane for 6 h were markedly attenuated. sevoflurane induction upregulated miR-34a, but downregulated TGIF2 in GC cells. TGIF2 was negatively regulated by miR-34a. Notably, overexpression of miR-34a inhibited proliferative and migratory abilities in sevoflurane-induced GC cells, and knockdown of miR-34a yielded the opposite results. In nude mice with xenografted GC tissues, sevoflurane treatment markedly reduced tumorigenic ability, which was improved by knockdown of miR-34a. CONCLUSIONS: Sevoflurane weakens proliferative and migratory abilities in GC by upregulating miR-34a and downregulating TGIF2.

Objective: To investigate the impact of history of hypertension and blood pressure levels on the thromboembolism risk in the setting of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Methods: China Atrial Fibrillation Registry Study prospectively enrolled 25 512 atrial fibrillation (AF) patients between August 2011 and December 2018. After exclusion of patients with valvular AF, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, receiving anticoagulation or ablation therapy at the enrollment, 7 757 patients were included in analysis. The primary endpoint was the time to the first occurrence of ischemic stroke or systemic embolism. Cox proportional hazards models were performed to evaluate whether a history of hypertension or blood pressure levels were independently associated with thromboembolism. Results: During a mean follow up of (35±25) months, 455 (5.9%)thromboembolic events occurred. The crude incidence rate of thromboembolism in patients with a history of hypertension was higher than that in patients without hypertension (2.38 vs. 1.35 per 100 patient-years, χ²=16.8,Log-rank P<0.001). Patients were further divided into 4 groups according to systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels at baseline, the crude incidence rate of thromboembolism significantly increased in proportion to the elevation of SBP levels (χ²=17.9,Log-rank P<0.001). However, there was no significant difference in thromboembolism risk among 4 groups stratified by diastolic blood pressure (DBP) levels (χ²=0.6,Log-rank P=0.907). Multivariable regression analysis showed that history of hypertension was independently associated with a 27% higher risk of thromboembolism (HR=1.27, 95%CI 1.01-1.61, P=0.045). Patients with SBP≥140 mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa) was associated with 36% higher risk of thromboembolism than patients with SBP<120 mmHg (HR=1.36, 95%CI 1.02-1.82, P=0.036). However, patients with SBP 120-129 mmHg or 130-139 mmHg were not at a higher risk of thromboembolism as compared to the patients with SBP<120 mmHg (SBP 120-129 mmHg: HR=1.23, 95%CI 0.90-1.67, P=0.193; SBP 130-139 mmHg: HR=1.30, 95%CI 0.95-1.77, P=0.098). In addition, DBP levels were not independently associated with the increased thromboembolism risk. Conclusion: A history of hypertension and SBP≥140 mmHg are independent predictors of thromboembolism risk in patients with NVAF. These results indicate that intensive efforts to lower SBP below 140 mmHg might be an important strategy to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with NVAF.
