RESUMO

Two-dimensional ferroelectric materials can maintain stable polarization with atomic layer thickness, and they have a wide range of technological applications in transistors, resistive memories, energy collectors and other multi-functional sensors for highly integrated flexible electronics. Domain evolution should be considered when 2d ferroelectric material-based devices are applied in a radiation environment, which may induce radiation damage and performance degradation. In this work, we investigate the domain evolution and photodetection performance degradation of α-In2Se3 nanoflakes induced by the total dose effect of 60Co γ-rays. The phonon modes change with an increase in total dose, while the domain structure changes in α-In2Se3 based transistors. Domain evolution may be one of the main reasons for the photoresponsivity degradation of these transistors. This investigation can provide a solid base for future research, and immediate applications in 2d ferroelectric material-based devices can be contemplated.

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is an acknowledged pathogenic mechanism of various ocular diseases, and in situ cells and mobilized bone marrow-derived cells (BMCs) are thought to participate in this process. We aimed to evaluate the roles of integrin α5 in BMCs and vascular endothelial cells (VECs) in the CNV process mediated by SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling. Adult wild-type mice were engrafted with whole BMCs obtained from GFP transgenic mice and then laser injured to induce CNV. BMCs and RF/6A cells were cultured to discover the mechanism of CNV in vitro. BMCs were mobilized to CNV areas, which expressed elevated SDF-1 and CXCR4. When SDF-1 was intravitreally injected, the number of BMCs was profoundly increased. In the SDF-1-treated group, the levels of integrin α5 expressed on BMCs and VECs were significantly higher than those on the cells in the control group. SDF-1 significantly increased the expression and positive ratio of integrin α5, which was involved in the recruitment and differentiation of BMCs into BMC-derived VECs, and these effects were suppressed by the CXCR4 inhibitor AMD3100. The PI3K/AKT pathway rather than the ERK pathway mediated SDF-1/CXCR4 induction of integrin α5. Integrin α5 suppression efficiently prevented the production of TGF-ß and bFGF but not VEGF. Inhibiting the SDF-1/CXCR4-PI3K/AKT-integrin α5 axis reduced CNV severity. Integrin α5 participates in BMC recruitment and differentiation in SDF-1/CXCR4-induced CNV and inhibition of this pathway may be a new approach to inhibit CNV.

Micromonospora terminaliae sp. nov., type strain TMS7T, is a gram-positive nonmotile aerobic actinobacterium that was recently isolated from a surface-sterilized stem of the medicinal plant Terminalia mucronata. This strain was described as a novel species in the Micromonospora genus. To elucidate the application potential of this species, its genome was completely sequenced, using the PacBio SMRT cell platform, and was compared with selected complete genome sequences of other Micromonospora species. Genomic analysis revealed that the genome of TMS7T consists of one circular DNA chromosome of 6,717,200 bp with a GC content of 73.35% and one plasmid of 24,912 bp with a GC content of 65.39%. The entire genome contains 6,311 predicted coding genes, 57 transfer RNAs, and nine ribosomal RNA genes. The genome contains a type III polyketide biosynthesis gene cluster, which encodes enzymes that catalyze the production of alkyl-O-dihydrogeranyl-methoxyhydroquinone. This information combined with the previous report that this strain can grow well on pH 10 medium with 4% NaCl (wt/vol) indicates that this strain may have potential biocontrol applications for economic plants cultivated on alkaline soil.

IMPORTANCE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an important risk factor for blindness in children due to neovascularization (NV). Hypoxia stimulates the formation of NV, as retinal hypoxia affects the stability and function of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) transcription factors. The purpose of this study is to study the mechanism of ROP and provide theoretical basis for clinical treatment of ROP. OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we used a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) to demonstrate the effects of the HIF-1α inhibitor PX-478 on OIR, and to determine its mechanism of action, to provide a theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of ROP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The OIR mouse model was induced by exposing neonatal mouse pups and their mothers to 75 ± 5% oxygen from postnatal day 7 (P7) to P12, before being returned to room air from P12 to P17. Flat mount analyses were performed at P12 and P17. Hif1a, Hif2a, Hif3a, and Vegfa mRNA were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in OIR mice at P12 and P17. Hif1a and Vegfa mRNA were detected in OIR mice at P12 and P17 treatment with PX-478. Western blot analyses were used to assess the levels of HIF-1α, VEGF-A, and EPO before and after treatment with PX-478 at P12 and P17. RESULTS: Hif1a mRNA was increased in OIR mice at P12 and P17, while Vegfa mRNA was increased at P12 and P17. HIF-1α, VEGF-A, and EPO protein levels were increased in OIR mice at P12 and P17, as compared to control mice at the same age (all p < 0.05). Inhibition of HIF-1α by injection of PX-478 in OIR mice (P9-P16) caused a decrease in the retinal avascular area at P12 and P17 (both p < 0.05), NV areas at P17 (p < 0.05), Vegfa mRNA decreased at P12 and P17, as compared to control mice (p < 0.05), and VEGF-A and EPO protein levels at P12 and P17, as compared to control mice. Our study found that there were PX-478 both retina and vitreous body of OIR. Inhibition of HIF-1α by injection of PX-478 in OIR mice caused a decrease in the retinal avascular area at P12 and P17, NV areas decreased at P17, VEGF-A and EPO protein levels at P12 and P17. Endothelial cell migration assays and cell tube formation indication PX-478 attenuate cell migration and significantly weakened the cell cavity formation under the condition of hypoxia. CONCLUSION: HIF-1α plays a main role in OIR and can be considered a therapeutic target in OIR by suppressing downstream angiogenic factors, PX-478 decreasing the retinal avascular area and NV.

INTRODUCTION: To introduce a classification for medial wall fragments in pertrochanteric femur fractures and investigate potential preoperative predictors of implant failure following fixation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical records of 324 adult patients receiving routine operative treatment using intramedullary devices for pertrochanteric femur fractures with medial wall fragments between August 2008 and May 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Potential predictors including age, gender, body mass index, comorbidities, AO/OTA classification of fractures were noted. The medial wall fractures were categorized into three types: 1) Type I: avulsion of the lesser trochanter; fracture line does not exceed the base of the lesser trochanter; 2) Type II: fragment involving the posterior cortex near the base of the lesser trochanter; fracture line does not reach the midline of the posterior wall; 3) Type III: fragment involving the large posterior cortex; fracture line reaches or exceeds the midline of the posterior wall. RESULTS: The 8 (2.5%) implant failures comprised 1 in 186 Type I fractures, 1 in 76 Type II fractures and 6 in 62 Type III fractures. The failure rates of each fracture type were 0.5% in Type I, 1.3% in Type II and significantly increased to 9.7% in Type III (odds ratio [OR], 19.821; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.337-168.135; p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Type III fractures had a significantly increased failure rate. It is important for orthopedists to identify Type III fractures presurgically, reduction of the medial wall fragment and fixation should be considered during surgery using intramedullary nails.

The use of immobilization methods to treat radioactive nuclear waste liquid is one of the most effective ways for preventing radioactive contamination. Understanding the solidification matrix for the immobilization behavior of radioactive ions is ​​an important issue. In this work, ab initio calculation was used to study the solidification mechanism of Cs+ in K-struvite crystal in the aqueous solution. Corresponding experiments were carried out and analyzed by XRF1, XPS2, AAS3, FI-IR4, SEM5, EDS6 and XRD7 . This work proposed a calculation method for the ΔEaq8 . By analyzing ΔEaq, the tendency of Cs+ to occupy the K site in K-struvite crystal is remarkable. Furthermore, in-depth first-principles calculations show that this immobilization behavior is related to the electronic structures of K-struvite and Cs-struvite9, and they together with the interaction of cation and aqueous solution determine the energy change of the process. This work provides a basic perspective for the study of magnesium phosphate potassium cement solidified nuclides, which is convenient for judging the solidification of other nuclide ions, thereby designing K-struvite cement for solidified nuclide. This method is also readily extended to other studies of the chemical immobilization of any crystal in the solution to any other ions.

SOX9 plays a crucial, extensive and conservative role in the process of somatic tissue development and adult regeneration through the positive self-regulation mediated by SOM across all vertebrates. In this study, we have cloned SOX9 from the kidney of hatchling Alligator sinensis. The full-length of SOX9 cDNA is 3878 bp with an open reading frame encoding 494 amino acids. Amino acid alignment analyses indicated that the SOX9 exhibit highly conserved functional domains. Using the droplet digital PCR, the mRNA abundances of SOX9 during nephrogenesis in A. sinensis showed prominent changes in the embryonic development, suggesting that SOX9 might combines a vital role in the regulation of complex renal development. Interestingly, we detected the nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of SOX9 protein using immunofluorescence, implying that nucleocytoplasmic shuttling is critical to the regulation of SOX9 in the renal embryonic development. Collectively, these data provide an important foundation for further studies on renal developmental biology and molecular biology of non-mammalian SOX9. Furthermore, it provides new insights into the phenomenon of SOX9 nucleocytoplasmic shuttling in Alligator sinensis, which is probably of great significance to the development of kidney metanephros embryo.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the therapeutic effect of a novel tension band using 3.0 mm cannulated screw combined with a titanium cable and specific shims comparatively with patellotibial tubercle cerclage in comminuted fractures of the inferior pole of the patella. METHODS: The retrospective study from March 2012 to July 2017 was conducted in Peking University Third Hospital and comprised 63 patients with comminuted fractures of the inferior pole of the patella: 41 treated with new tension band using 3.0 mm cannulated screw combined with a titanium cable and specific shims (new tension band group) and 22 with patellotibial tubercle cerclage (tubercle cerclage group). Gender, age, AO/OTA fracture type, injury mechanism, inter-fragmentary gap, and follow-up time of patients were recorded. Two groups were compared regarding: operation time, blood loss, partial weight-bearing time, fracture-healed time, Bostman score and knee mobility at 12-month follow-up, and postoperative complications. Continuous and categorical parameters were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test and the chi-squared test, respectively. Fisher's exact test was used for small data subsets. RESULTS: Between the two groups, no statistically significant difference was found in mean age, gender, AO/OTA fracture type, injury mechanism, mean inter-fragmentary gap, or mean follow-up time (P > 0.05). The mean operation time of new tension band group was significantly longer than that of tubercle cerclage group (76.4 min vs 64.2 min, P = 0.006), while there was no significant difference in blood loss. After surgery, new tension band group had a significantly earlier mean partial weight-bearing time (5.2 weeks vs 7.4 weeks, P < 0.001) and fracture-healed time (9.6 weeks vs 11.6 weeks, P < 0.001). At 12-month follow-up, patients of new tension band group had a significantly higher mean Bostman score (28.5 vs 25.8, P < 0.001) and knee mobility (126.7 vs 117.3, P < 0.001). Ten complications related with internal fixation were found in tubercle cerclage group including two cases of loose internal fixation, two cases of cerclage breakage, and six cases of low patella position who undertook secondary operation. No complications were found in new tension band group (0 in 41 vs 10 in 22, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Patients with comminuted fractures of the inferior pole of the patella treated with a novel tension band experienced a longer operation time, but earlier partial-weight-bearing and fracture-healed time, better clinical outcomes at 12-month follow-up, and less complications. It should be considered an alternative therapy for the treatment of distal pole patellar fractures.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of autologous platelet-rich gel (APG) in the treatment of deep sinus tract wounds from diabetic ulcers. METHODS: Forty-eight patients with diabetic ulcers were randomly classified into two groups: an APG treatment group (25 patients) and a conventional wound dressing control group (23 patients). The sinus tract closure times, ulcer healing rates, hospitalization times, and hospitalization expenses of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the basic data and wound conditions between the two groups. The cure (healed wound) rates were 96% and 87% for the APG group and control group, respectively. During the first 4 wk, the sinus tract closure rate for the APG group was significantly higher than that for the control group. However, there was no significant difference in the sinus tract healing between the two groups at the end of the 8th wk. For the APG group and the control group, the average hospital stays were 19.36 ± 7.239 d and 48.13 ± 11.721 d, respectively, and the total hospitalization expenses were 2.48 ± 0.45 ten thousand yuan and 5.63 ± 1.35 ten thousand yuan (P < 0.05), respectively. These differences were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: When compared with conventional wound dressings, APG can accelerate the healing of deep sinus tract wounds associated with diabetic ulcers.

Surfactin is a promising microbial lipopeptide with wide applications in food, environmental, agricultural, and pharmaceutical fields. However, its high cost caused by low productivity largely limits the commercial application. In this study, genome shuffling was employed to improve surfactin production in Bacillus velezensis strain LM3403 via recursive protoplast fusion. RT-qPCR analysis was employed to evaluate the transcriptional variance of surfactin synthase genes and surfactin efflux gene to insight into the variance underlying the recombinant strain. After three rounds of genome shuffling, a high-yield and genetic stable recombinant F34 was obtained, exhibiting dramatic improvement in surfactin production (from 229.60 ± 7.10 mg/L to 908.15 ± 5.65 mg/L) with high proportion of long carbon chain homologues. Scale-up fermentation confirmed that F34 had good growth performance and reached the yield of 917.05 ± 10.25 mg/L in a 30 L fermenter, which was 3.99-fold that of the initial strain. RT-qPCR analysis showed that the transcriptional levels of surfactin synthase genes srfAA and sfp, and surfactin efflux gene swrC in F34 were 8.12-fold, 9.27-fold, and 8.45-fold higher than those of LM3403, respectively. The upregulation of genes were consistent with the high surfactin yield in F34, indicating the increased capability of surfactin biosynthesis and transmember efflux in F34. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to employ genome shuffling to breeding a B. velezensis strain to improve surfactin yield. The research helps us to understand the mechanisms underlying surfactin overproduction and provide references for further rational strain improvement.

OBJECTIVE: Gut microbiota plays a key role in metabolism and health in diabetes patients with gastrointestinal microbiota dysbiosis. Thus, regulating the ecological balance of gut microbiota may provide a pathway toward improvement for these patients. Our previous study showed that functional ingredients in tea may inhibit cornstarch digestion in vitro. METHODS: A cornstarch-tea diet was developed, and in this study we investigated the effects of such a diet on blood glucose and gut microbiota in diabetic mice. RESULTS: Diabetes resulted in significant weight loss, hyperphagia and hyperglycemia. 16S rDNA sequencing revealed that in diabetes there is significantly increased Bacteroidaceae, Helicobacteraceae, Ruminococcaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Rikenellaceae and Saccharibacteria_genera_incertae_sedis, and significantly decreased Lactobacillaceae, Prevotellaceae, Coriobacteriaceae, Verrucomicrobiaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae. The cornstarch‒tea diet resulted in a trend toward reduced blood glucose, with particularly increased levels of Coriobacteriaceae, Lactobacillaceae, Prevotellaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae, and decreased Bacteroidaceae, Ruminococcaceae, Helicobacteraceae and Enterobacteriaceae. CONCLUSIONS: Instant tea and matcha supplementation had beneficial effects on regulation of blood glucose and gut microbiota, reversing the changes in microbiota caused by alloxan injection. The cornstarch‒tea regulation pathway is involved in bacterium group regulation rather than single-species regulation, which suggests that cornstarch combined with tea may be used as a functional food supplement for diabetes patients.

The world's first 194-cm-long total-body PET/CT scanner (uEXPLORER) has been built by the EXPLORER Consortium to offer a transformative platform for human molecular imaging in clinical research and health care. Its total-body coverage and ultra-high sensitivity provide opportunities for more accurate tracer kinetic analysis in studies of physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the capability of total-body parametric imaging and to quantify the improvement in image quality and kinetic parameter estimation by direct and kernel reconstruction of the uEXPLORER data. Methods: We developed quantitative parametric image reconstruction methods for kinetic analysis and used them to analyze the first human dynamic total-body PET study. A healthy female subject was recruited, and a 1-h dynamic scan was acquired during and after an intravenous injection of 256 MBq of 18F-FDG. Dynamic data were reconstructed using a 3-dimensional time-of-flight list-mode ordered-subsets expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithm and a kernel-based algorithm with all quantitative corrections implemented in the forward model. The Patlak graphical model was used to analyze the 18F-FDG kinetics in the whole body. The input function was extracted from a region over the descending aorta. For comparison, indirect Patlak analysis from reconstructed frames and direct reconstruction of parametric images from the list-mode data were obtained for the last 30 min of data. Results: Images reconstructed by OSEM showed good quality with low noise, even for the 1-s frames. The image quality was further improved using the kernel method. Total-body Patlak parametric images were obtained using either indirect estimation or direct reconstruction. The direct reconstruction method improved the parametric image quality, having a better contrast-versus-noise tradeoff than the indirect method, with a 2- to 3-fold variance reduction. The kernel-based indirect Patlak method offered image quality similar to the direct Patlak method, with less computation time and faster convergence. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the capability of total-body parametric imaging using the uEXPLORER. Furthermore, the results showed the benefits of kernel-regularized reconstruction and direct parametric reconstruction. Both can achieve superior image quality for tracer kinetic studies compared with the conventional indirect OSEM for total-body imaging.

The recommendations focus on the care and management of older adults with mild cognitive impairment, the objectives and methods of maintaining cognition and training, the assessments and measures of daily care for patients at different stages of dementia, the assessments and coping strategies for the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, principles and suggestions for an appropriate living environment, arrangements for recreational activities, the care and management of patients with end-stage dementia, and suggestions for addressing stress in caregivers.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Fushen Granule (FSG) is a Chinese medicinal formular prepared in hospital to treat intestinal mucosal dysfunction induced by peritoneal dialysis (PD). However, the mechanisms of this formular has not been studied yet. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study was designed to investigate the effect of FSG against intestinal dysfunction during PD treatment and explore the potential mechanisms using a rat PD model. METHODS AND METHODS: In the present study, the effect of FSG on improving intestinal mucosal architecture injury was intuitively shown by hematoxylin-eosin staining, the serum levels of DAO and D-lactate were measured to evaluate the intestinal permeability by the DAO Assay Kit and D-Lactic Acid ELISA Kit. The expression of the intestinal mucosal barrier related inflammation factor by real-time PCR. The main effective constituents of FSG were characterized by UPLC/Q-TOF analysis, and the targets and pathways of the constituents were predicted via TCMSP database and IPA. the activation of p38MAPK signaling pathway by western blotting. RESULTS: HE staining results showed that FSG protected against intestinal mucosal injury in pathology in PD rats. FSG decreased the intestinal mucosal permeability by increasing the transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) level and decreasing the intestinal clearance of fluorescein-isothiocyanate dextran (FD4) and the level of D-lactate and diamine oxidase (DAO). FSG significantly decreased the expression of ICAM-1, IL-1ß, iNOS and TNF-α, and further inhibited the activation of p38MAPK signaling pathway via down-regulating the expression of P-p38MAPK and up-regulating the expression of DUSP1, occludin, and ZO-1. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that FSG ameliorated intestinal mucosal dysfunction in PD by decreasing expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and inhibiting the activation of p38MAPK signaling pathway. The results provide a promising basis for the alternative medicine treatment of intestinal mucosal dysfunction in PD.

The commonly used materials in fog seal are emulsified asphalt and modified emulsified asphalt. Nevertheless, there are some intractable problems including aging under ultraviolet, poor permeability, and moisture susceptibility. Therefore, silicone resin polymer was used as a kind of innovative fog seal material in this study. Physicochemical properties of solidified silicone resin were characterized. X-ray computed tomography and 3D reconstruction technology were used to evaluate permeability and distribution of silicone resin polymer in an asphalt mixture. Moisture sensitivity and high-temperature performance of the asphalt mixture maintained by silicone resin polymer were also detected. The results show that surface characteristic of silicone resin can effectively isolate moisture, thereby improving moisture resistance of the asphalt mixture. Silicone resin was found to be evenly distributed throughout the pores of a sample when the dosage was 400 or 600 mL/m2. The pore filling rate increased by 16.3% when the dosage was changed from 200 to 400 mL/m2, whereas it only increased by 3.7% when dosage increased from 400 to 600 mL/m2. Moisture damage resistance of asphalt mixtures generally increased as the dosage of silicone was increased. However, as the dosage increased from 400 to 600 mL/m2, the growth rate in residual Marshall stability (RMS) and tensile strength ratio (TSR) slowed significantly since the pore filling effect of silicone has reached the upper limit. Dosage of silicone resin has little effect on the results of the rutting test while it has significant influence on Hamburg wheel tracking test (HWT). Furthermore, it was found that 400 mL/m2 is the optimum silicone dosage for open-graded friction course (OGFC)-13 mixture in consideration of permeability, distribution, performance of mixture, and economic cost.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of intertrochanteric hip fracture is expected to increase as the global population ages. It is one of the most important causes of mortality and morbidities in the geriatric population. The incidence of reverse oblique and transverse intertrochanteric (AO/OTA 31-A3) fractures is relatively low; however, the incidence of implant failure in AO/OTA 31-A3 fractures is relatively high compared with that in AO/OTA 31-A1 and A2 fractures. To date, the risk factors for implant failure in AO/OTA 31-A3 fractures treated with proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) have remained ambiguous. The purpose of this study was to identify the predictive factors of implant failure in AO/OTA 31-A3 fractures treated with PFNA. METHODS: The data of all patients who underwent surgery for trochanteric fractures at our institution between January 2006 and February 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. All AO/OTA 31-A3 fractures treated with PFNA were included. Logistic regression analysis of potential predictors of implant failure was performed. Potential predictors included age, sex, body mass index, fracture type, reduction method, status of posteromedial support and lateral femoral wall, reduction quality, tip-apex distance and position of the helical blade in the femoral head. RESULTS: One hundred four (9.3%) patients with AO/OTA 31-A3 fractures were identified. Forty-five patients with AO/OTA 31-A3 fractures treated with PFNA were suitable for our study. Overall, implant failure occurred in six (13.3%) of forty-five patients. Multivariate analysis identified poor reduction quality (OR, 28.70; 95% CI, 1.91-431.88; p = 0.015) and loss of posteromedial support (OR, 18.98; 95% CI, 1.40-257.08; p = 0.027) as factors associated with implant failure. CONCLUSIONS: Poor reduction quality and loss of posteromedial support are predictors of implant failure in reverse oblique and transverse intertrochanteric fractures treated with PFNA.

BACKGROUND: In this paper, we aim to explore clinical value of skeletal muscle index (SMI) and prognostic nutrition index (PNI) on resected colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM). RESULTS: Among the 539 patients, 355 were males. Baseline lower SMI was associated with smaller BMI, smaller PNI, smaller pre-albumin and longer hospitalization days (P<0.05). Patients with lower SMI and PNI had significantly shorter duration of PFS and OS (P<0.05). SMI can reflect the postoperative treatment response. Postoperative 6-month's and 12-month's SMI and PNI can indicate overall prognosis. When combined SMI and PNI, prognostic AUC of ROC curves improved significantly. CONCLUSION: Combined monitor of SMI and PNI can improve the power at predicting prognosis. Postoperative 6-month's record of SMI and PNI was more accurate and predictive for CRLM prognosis. METHOD: A total of 539 resected CRLM patients between January 2013 to December 2016 with complete clinical data were included. Computed tomography image was collected from each patient. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed; area under curves (AUC) were also determined. All clinical variables were analyzed in proper way.

BACKGROUND: Several randomized controlled trials comparing platelet-rich plasma to standard wound care for chronic wounds have been published. Previous articles have revealed that the role of platelet-rich plasma in promoting chronic wound healing is uncertain. This quantitative meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate whether superior outcomes can be obtained by using platelet-rich plasma in nonhealing ulcers compared with traditional wound care. METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, EBSCO (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), and Cochrane databases were searched through November of 2018 for randomized controlled trials comparing platelet-rich plasma to standard wound care for chronic wounds. For binary outcome measures, we calculated the risk ratio. The continuous outcomes were expressed as the mean differences. Subgroup analyses were also performed according to the type of chronic ulcer. RESULTS: Overall, 630 adult patients in 15 randomized controlled trials from 2000 to 2018 were included. The number of ulcers healed in the platelet-rich plasma group was higher than in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (risk ratio, 1.26; 95 percent CI, 1.11 to 1.42; p = 0.0003). During the fourth week of follow-up, the number of ulcers healed in the platelet-rich plasma group was significantly greater than in the control group (risk ratio, 3.50; 95 percent CI, 1.80 to 6.81; p = 0.0002). CONCLUSIONS: Platelet-rich plasma is a valuable and safe treatment dressing for chronic nonhealing ulcers; it is simple to prepare and has remarkable effects. BACKGROUND: Axillary osmidrosis, characterized by an unpleasant odor, renders social life difficult for young adults. This study aimed to compare traditional open excision and use of the VERSAJET™ II Hydrosurgery System for effectiveness and treatment complaints in the treatment of axillary osmidrosis. AIM: The current study aimed to assess the curative effect of VERSAJET™ for axillary osmidrosis in a prospective cohort study, comparatively to traditional open excision. METHOD: In this prospective cohort study, from October 2016 to March 2018, 31 and 34 patients treated with the VERSAJET™ II Hydrosurgery System and traditional open excision, respectively, were recruited and followed up for 6 months post-treatment. Treatment outcomes were assessed, including surgical field size, operation time, postoperative complications, odor elimination, hair growth reduction, scarring, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: The VERSAJET™ group had significantly shorter operation (P < .001) and lower rates of complications, including hematoma (P = .014), wound dehiscence (P = .048), and epidermal erosion (P = .022) compared with the open excision group. A similar rate of good odor elimination (P = .925) was observed in both groups (96.77% and 97.05% in the VERSAJET™ and open excision groups, respectively). Most patients experienced sparsity of armpit hair following both procedures. Based on a comprehensive consideration of the whole operation process, recovery process, postoperative odor and scar, patients in the VERSAJET™ group were more satisfied compared with those in the open excision group (P = .008). CONCLUSION: The VERSAJET™ II procedure is shorter, with less postoperative scarring and fewer postoperative complications, compared with the traditional method. Therefore, the VERSAJET™ II procedure is superior to traditional open excision, as a new, radical treatment method for axillary osmidrosis.
