Accumulating evidence has shown that circular RNA (circRNA) dysregulation is involved in various types of cancer, including osteosarcoma (OS). Nevertheless, the role and mechanism of circRNAs in OS progression and chemoresistance remain elusive. We found that a novel doxorubicin-induced circular RNA, hsa_circ_0004674, screened by whole total transcriptome RNA sequencing in our previous study, was upregulated in OS chemoresistant cell lines and tissues and also connected with patients' poor prognosis. Circ_0004674 knockdown remarkably suppressed OS cell chemoresistance, proliferation, migration, invasion, OS tumor growth, and enhanced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in vitro and in vivo through control the expression of the antiapoptotic protein MCL1, a member of the Bcl-2 gene family. Further online bioinformatics analysis revealed that miR-142-5p had potential binding sites that can bind circ_0004674 and the 3'UTR of MCL1 mRNA. Moreover, the expression and function of miR-142-5p were conversely correlated with circ_0004674 in vitro. RIP, pull-down, luciferase assay, and RNA FISH demonstrated that circ_0004674 could compete with MCL1 for miR-142-5p binding to counteract miR-142-5p-mediated repression of MCL1 at the post-transcriptional level. To sum up, our study sheds light on the critical role of the oncogenic circ_0004674/miR-142-5p/MCL1 axis in OS progression and chemoresistance, providing a novel potential target for OS therapy.

Background: The prognosis of synchronous bone metastasis (BM) in colorectal cancer (CRC) is poor and rarely concerned. A clinical tool to evaluate the prognosis and clinical outcomes for BM would be attractive in current clinical practice. Methods: A total of 342 CRC patients with synchronous BM were identified from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The cancer specific survival (CSS) was estimated with the Kaplan-Meier method. Prognostic factors were identified from multivariate Cox model, and the final clinical nomogram was developed to predict the CSS. The concordance index (C-index) was used to assess the discriminative ability. Calibration curves were provided to internally validate the performance of the nomogram. Results: The nomogram finally consisted of 6 prognostic factors including age, tumor grade, AJCC N stage, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels, primary tumor resection and chemotherapy, which translated the effects of prognostic factors into certain scores to predict the 1-, 2- and 3-year CSS for the synchronous BM in CRC patients. The nomogram presented a good accuracy for predicting the CSS with the C-index of 0.742. The calibration of the nomogram predictions was also accurate. Conclusions: This nomogram was accurate enough to predict the CSS of CRC patients with synchronous BM using readily available clinicopathologic factors and could provide individualized clinical decisions for both physicians and patients.

T cell metabolic activation plays a crucial role in inflammation of atherosclerosis. Shikonin (SKN), a natural naphthoquinone with anti-inflammatory activity, has shown to exert cardioprotective effects, but the effect of SKN on atherosclerosis is unclear. In addition, SKN was found to inhibit glycolysis via targeting pyruvate kinase muscle isozyme 2 (PKM2). In the present study, we investigated the effects of SKN on hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy)-accelerated atherosclerosis and T cell inflammatory activation in ApoE-/- mice and the metabolic mechanisms in this process. Drinking water supplemented with Hcy (1.8 g/L) was administered to ApoE-/- mice for 2 weeks and the mice were injected with SKN (1.2 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle every 3 days. We showed that SKN treatment markedly attenuated HHcy-accelerated atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice and significantly decreased inflammatory activated CD4+ T cells and proinflammatory macrophages in plaques. In splenic CD4+ T cells isolated from HHcy-ApoE-/- mice, SKN treatment significantly inhibited HHcy-stimulated PKM2 activity, interferon-γ secretion and the capacity of these T cells to promote macrophage proinflammatory polarization. SKN treatment significantly inhibited HHcy-stimulated CD4+ T cell glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation. Metabolic profiling analysis of CD4+ T cells revealed that Hcy administration significantly increased various glucose metabolites as well as lipids and acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1, which were reversed by SKN treatment. In conclusion, our results suggest that SKN is effective to ameliorate atherosclerosis in HHcy-ApoE-/- mice and this is at least partly associated with the inhibition of SKN on CD4+ T cell inflammatory activation via PKM2-dependent metabolic suppression.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonotic infectious disease that is transmitted in various ways and causes great harm to humans and animals. The brucellosis pathogen is Brucella, which mainly resides in macrophage cells and survives and replicates in host cells. However, the mechanisms underlying Brucella survival in macrophage cells have not been thoroughly elucidated to date. Peroxiredoxin 6 (Prdx6) is a bifunctional protein that shows not only GSH peroxidase activity but also phospholipase A2 activity and plays important roles in combating oxidative damage and regulating apoptosis. RESULTS: Recombinant mouse (Mus musculus) Prdx6 (MmPrdx6) was expressed and purified, and monoclonal antibodies against MmPrdx6 were prepared. Using the Brucella suis S2 strain to infect RAW264.7 murine macrophages, the level of intracellular Prdx6 expression first decreased and later increased following infection. Overexpressing Prdx6 in macrophages resulted in an increase in B. suis S2 strain levels in RAW264.7 cells, while knocking down Prdx6 reduced the S2 levels in cells. CONCLUSIONS: Host Prdx6 can increase the intracellular survival of B. suis S2 strain and plays a role in Brucella infection.

A field experiment was conducted to examine the effects of plastic film mulching (PM), straw retention (SR), and planting green manure (GM) on winter wheat grain yield and soil fertility. The results showed that PM did not have consistently positive effect on the grain yield, when compared to the traditional patterns (TP). No difference of average grain yield was observed between them over three years. Soil total nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) were decreased in 20-40 cm layer in PM than those in TP, while no difference was observed for soil organic matter, nitrate (NO3--N), available iron (Fe) and copper (Cu). The mean grain yield of three years decreased by 12.1% in SR than that in TP treatment. At maturity stage of winter wheat, soil total N and available Cu was increased by 5.8% in 0-20 cm and 6.2% in 20-40 cm layer, respectively, while soil available P and Mn were decreased by 36.1% and 10.2%, respectively. No difference was observed between SR and TP treatments for soil organic matter, NO3--N, available K, S, Zn and Fe at anthesis and maturity stages. Compared to the TP treatment, the mean grain yield was decreased by 12.1% in GM treatment. Soil pH, available P and S were decreased, while the soil organic matter, total N, NO3--N, and available Zn and Mn were increased. No difference was observed for soil available K, Fe and Cu. In conclusion, the PM and SR were not beneficial for the improvement of soil fertility, and thus inhibited the grain yield increase in dryland with low soil fertility level. The GM has greater potential to increase soil nutrients, but it should be paid more attention to the risk of grain yield reduction due to insufficient annual precipitation.

Chemo-resistance is a huge obstacle encountered in the osteosarcoma (OS) treatment. Protein-coding mRNAs, as well as non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including long ncRNA (lncRNA), circular RNA (circRNA), and microRNA (miRNA), have been demonstrated to play an essential role in the regulation of cancer biology. However, the comprehensive expression profile and competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory network between mRNAs and ncRNAs in the OS chemo-resistance still remain unclear. In the current study, we developed whole-transcriptome sequencing (RNA sequencing [RNA-seq]) in the three paired multi-drug chemo-resistant and chemo-sensitive OS cell lines to comprehensively identify differentially expressed lncRNAs, circRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses were performed for mRNAs with significantly different expression. Then the ceRNA networks combining lncRNAs, circRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs were predicted and constructed on the basis of the authoritative miRanda and TargetScan databases combined with the widely accepted vital drug resistance-related genes and signal transduction pathways. In addition, two constructed ceRNA regulatory pathways, lncRNAMEG3/hsa-miR-200b-3p/AKT2 and hsa_circ_0001258/hsa-miR-744-3p/GSTM2, were randomly selected and validated by real-time qPCR, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), RNA pull-down assay, and dual luciferase reporter gene system. Taken together, our findings may provide new evidence for the underlying mechanism of OS chemo-resistance and uncover some novel targets for reversing it.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Heat stress could cause huge losses for Lentinula edodes in China and other Asian cultivation areas. Yet our understanding of mechanism how to defend to heat stress is incomplete. METHODS: Using heat-tolerant and heat-sensitive strains of L. edodes, we reported a combined proteome and transcriptome analysis of L. edodes response to 40 °C heat stress for 24 h. Meanwhile, the effect of LeDnaJ on the thermotolerance and IAA (indoleacetic acid) biosynthesis in L. edodes was analyzed via the over-expression method. RESULTS: The proteome results revealed that HSPs (heat shock proteins) such as Hsp40 (DnaJ), Hsp70, Hsp90 and key enzymes involved in tryptophan and IAA metabolism process LeTrpE, LeTrpD, LeTam-1, LeYUCCA were more highly expressed in S606 than in YS3357, demonstrating that HSPs and tryptophan as well as IAA metabolism pathway should play an important role in thermotolerance. Over-expression of LeDnaJ gene in S606 strains showed better tolerance to heat stress. It was also documented that intracellular IAA accumulation of S606 (8-fold up) was more than YS3357 (2-fold up), and exogenous IAA enhanced L. edodes tolerance to heat stress. CONCLUSION: Our data support the interest of LeTrpE, LeDnaJ, tryptophan and IAA could play a pivotal role in enhancing organism thermotolerance.

Emulsions were prepared using hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and nonionic surfactant sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) as emulsifier. Effects of Span 80 concentration, emulsification time, emulsification rate, poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) concentration and the surface chemical properties of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles on emulsion properties were systematically studied. The results showed that emulsion would undergo a phase inversion from oil-in-water (O/W) type to water-in-oil (W/O) type with an increase in Span 80 concentration. All of the above factors are closely related to emulsion type and stability. SEM results indicated that cured materials with different structures were obtained using these emulsions as templates via in situ evaporation; especially, open-cell porous structures were obtained by a mixture of hydroxyapatite and a moderate concentration of Span 80. The mechanism of this emulsion system is proposed in relation to the emulsion properties and cured material structure, which should be attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between hydroxyapatite and Span 80 by hydroxyl groups as well as their location changes in the emulsion.

A field experiment was conducted to examine the effects of plastic film mulching (PM), straw retention (SR) and planting green manure (GM) on grain yield and nutrient concentrations of winter wheat. Compared to the traditional pattern (TP), plastic film mulching showed no significant effect on the average yield over the three years but increased the average phosphorus (P) uptake and concentration in grain by 8.4% and 13.0%, respectively. The average uptake of nitrogen (N), sulfur (S) and iron (Fe) was decreased by 12.6%, 15.0% and 11.1%, and the corresponding concentration was decreased by 12.1%, 12.9% and 10.1%, respectively. There was no significant effect on grain zinc (Zn) concentration. Straw retention decreased grain yield by 12.1%, reduced the average uptake of N, S and Fe decreased by 22.5%, 21.0% and 19.8%, and their corresponding concentration by 10.1%, 9.4% and 3.8%, respectively. The average uptake of P in grain was decreased by 9.8% with straw retention, while the P concentration was increased by 5.0%. There was no significant effect of straw retention on Zn concentration in grain. Planting green manure decreased the grain yield by 12.1%. It had no significant effect on the average uptake of N and Zn, but increased the grain N and Zn concentration by 12.1% and 12.6%, respectively. It showed no impact on P, S and Fe concentration in grain. The discordance between variation of grain yield and its nutrient uptake under different cultivations was the key reason for the changes of their nutrient concentration. Considering the potential adverse effects of plastic film mulching and straw retention on the quantity and quality of grain yield, suitable N fertilization should be applied to ensure the nutrient requirement for grain yield and regulate the uptake and utilization of N, S and Fe for improving the grain quality. Planting green manure could improve soil fertility and increase grain N and Zn concentration, but the yield reduction deserves more attention.

Recent findings have shown that lncRNA dysregulation is involved in many cancers, including osteosarcoma (OS). In a previous study, we reported a novel lncRNA, ODRUL, that could promote doxorubicin resistance in OS. We now report the function and underlying mechanism of ODRUL in regulating OS progression. We show that ODRUL is upregulated in OS tissues and cell lines and correlates with poor prognosis. ODRUL knockdown significantly inhibits OS cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and tumor growth in vitro and in vivo by decreasing matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression. A microarray screen combined with online database analysis showed that miR-3182 is upregulated and MMP2 is downregulated in sh-ODRUL-expressing MG63 cells and that miR-3182 harbors potential binding sites for ODRUL and the 3' UTR of MMP2 mRNA. In addition, miR-3182 expression and function are inversely correlated with ODRUL expression in vitro and in vivo. A luciferase reporter assay demonstrated that ODRUL could directly interact with miR-3182 and upregulate MMP2 expression via its competing endogenous RNA activity on miR-3182 at the posttranscriptional level. Taken together, our study has elucidated the role of oncogenic ODRUL in OS progression and may provide a new target in OS therapy.

Recent efforts have revealed that numerous natural antisense lncRNAs play a crucial role in the regulation of cancer biology. Here, based on our previous study, we further identified that the lncRNA FOXC2-AS1 and its antisense transcript FOXC2 are positively up-regulated in doxorubicin-resistant osteosarcoma cell lines and tissues, correlate with poor prognosis and promote doxorubicin resistance in osteosarcoma cells in vitro and in vivo. In addition, FOXC2-AS1 and FOXC2 are mainly located in the cytoplasm and form an RNA-RNA double-stranded structure in the overlapping region, which is necessary for FOXC2-AS1 to regulate the expression of FOXC2 at both the transcription and post-transcription levels. In addition, transcription factor FOXC2 also contributes to doxorubicin resistance through inducing the expression of the classical multi-drug resistance-related ABCB1 gene similar to FOXC2-AS1. Thus, we concluded that the lncRNA FOXC2-AS1 may promote doxorubicin resistance in OS by increasing the expression of transcription factor FOXC2, further facilitating ABCB1 expression. These findings demonstrate the potential underlying mechanism of FOXC2-AS1 in the regulation of doxorubicin resistance in OS and possibly provide a novel reversing target.

Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is a cell signaling protein involved in systemic inflammation, and is also an important cytokine in the acute phase reaction. Several studies suggested a possible association between TNF-α and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in type 2 diabetic patients, but no accurate conclusion was available. A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies was performed to comprehensively assess the association between serum TNF-α levels and DPN in type 2 diabetic patients. We searched Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, and China Biology Medicine (CMB) databases for eligible studies. Study-specific data were combined using meta-analysis. Fourteen studies were finally included into the meta-analysis, which involved a total of 2650 participants. Meta-analysis showed that there were obviously increased serum TNF-α levels in DPN patients compared with type 2 diabetic patients without DPN (standard mean difference [SMD] = 1.203, 95 % CI 0.795-1.611, P < 0.001). There were also obviously increased levels of serum TNF-α in diabetic patients with DPN when compared with healthy controls (SMD = 2.364, 95 % CI 1.333-3.394, P < 0.001). In addition, there were increased serum TNF-α levels in painful DPN patients compared with painless DPN patients (SMD = 0.964, 95 % CI 0.237-1.690, P = 0.009). High level of serum TNF-α was significantly associated with increased risk of DPN in patients with type 2 diabetes (odds ratio [OR] = 2.594, 95 % CI 1.182-5.500, P = 0.017). Increased serum levels of TNF-α was not associated with increased risk of painful DPN in patients with type 2 diabetes (OR = 2.486, 95 % CI 0.672-9.193, P = 0.172). Sensitivity analysis showed that there was no obvious change in the pooled estimates when omitting single study by turns. Type 2 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy have obviously increased serum TNF-α levels than type 2 diabetic patients without peripheral neuropathy and healthy controls, and high level of serum TNF-α may be associated with increased risk of peripheral neuropathy independently. Further prospective cohort studies are needed to assess the association between TNF-α and DPN.

Interference imaging spectrometer is one of the most important equipments of Chang'E 1 satellite, which is applied to analysis the material composition and its distribution of the surface on the moon. At present, the spectral resolution of level 2B scientific data obtained by existing methods is 325 cm(-1). If we use the description way of wavelength resolution, various spectrum is different: the first band is 7.6 nm, the last band is 29 nm, which introduces two questions: (1) the spectral resolution description way mismatch with the way of ground spectral library used for calibration and comparison; (2) The signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra in the shortwave band is low due to the signal entering narrow band is little. This paper discussed the relationship between wavelength resolution and cut-off function based on the reconstruction model of CE-1 interference imaging spectrometer. It proposed an adjustable cut-off function changing with wavelength or wavelength resolution, while selected the appropriate Sinc function as apodization to realize the reconstruction of arbitrary specified wavelength resolution in the band coverage. Then we used this method to CE-1 on orbit 0B data to get a spectral image of 29 nm wavelength resolution. Finally, by using the signal-to-noise ratio, principal component analysis and unsupervised classification method on the reconstruction results with 2 grade science data from ground application system for comparison, the results showed that: signal-to-noise ratio of the shortwave band increased about 4 times, and the average increased about 2.4 times, the classification based on the spectrum was consistent, and the quality of the data was greatly improved. So, EWSR method has the advantages that: (1) in the case of keeping spectral information steadiness, it can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of shortwave band spectrum though sacrificed part of spectral resolution; (2) it can achieve the spectral data reconstruction which can set arbitrary band position or specify any wavelength resolution within the band range.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative bacillus that causes nosocomial infections, such as bacteremia, pneumonia, and meningitis and urinary tract and wound infections. In the present study, the surface antigen protein 1 (SurA1) gene of A. baumannii strain CCGGD201101 was identified, cloned and expressed, and then its roles in fitness and virulence were investigated. Virulence was observed in the human lung cancer cell lines A549 and HEp-2 at one week after treatment with recombinant SurA1. One isogenic SurA1 knock-out strain, GR0015, which was derived from the A. baumannii strain CCGGD201101 isolated from diseased chicks in a previous study, highlighted the effect of SurA1 on fitness and growth. Its growth rate in LB broth and killing activity in human sera were significantly decreased compared with strain CCGGD201101. In the Galleria mellonella insect model, the isogenic SurA1 knock-out strain exhibited a lower survival rate and decreased dissemination. These results suggest that SurA1 plays an important role in the fitness and virulence of A. baumannii.

BACKGROUND: IDH1/2 mutation, 1p/19q-codeletion and MGMT hypermethylation are well known molecular markers for gliomas. ATRX and p53 alterations are two lineage-specific genetic aberrations in diffuse astrocytic tumors. The aim of the present study is to clarify the significance of ATRX loss and its correlation with p53 overexpression, IDH1/2 mutations, 1p/19q-codeletion and MGMT hypermethylation in supertentorial astrocytoma, and to determine the prognostic value of these factors in Chinese patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 135 adult supertentorial astrocytomas were evaluated. ATRX loss was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and was shown to be much less frequent in pGBs (3.5%) than in grade II, III astrocytomas and IV sGBs (31%). Direct sequencing and/or IHC analysis of the IDH1R132H gene mutation and p53 accumulation demonstrated correlation with age. Strong correlations were found between ATRX loss and IDH1R132H mutation, p53 overexpression as well as MGMT hypermethylation. 1p/19q-codeletion detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) showed mutually exclusive with ATRX loss and p53 accumulation. In addition, patients with p53 overexpression combined with ATRX alterations demonstrated substantially longer survival than patients with wild-type ATRX. CONCLUSIONS: There may be interactions among these distinct molecules in astrocytoma development. ATRX loss may predict better clinical outcome in astrocytoma patients with p53 overexpression as compared to patients with wild-type ATRX. Tumors with astrocytoma phenotype accompanied by 1p/19q-codeletion and IDH1R132H mutation are mutually exclusive with ATRX and p53 alterations. Routine IHC can be used for evaluation of ATRX loss, p53 protein accumulation and IDH1R132H mutation, which may allow a means of classification of astrocytoma outcome.

In this paper, a multi-layered metallic structure is proposed, which consists of split-ring resonators on both sides of two dielectric substrates. Numerical results reveal that the structure realizes a high magnitude of 0.94, three bands and broadband (more than 8 GHz) asymmetric transmission for linearly polarized wave. These properties are not observed in previous works. In order to better know these transmission properties, the Fabry-Perot like resonance model has been introduced to analyze the enhancement mechanism of asymmetric transmission in the multi-layered structure. The physical mechanism of linearly polarized wave conversion and asymmetric transmission based on electric fields and currents distribution is also analyzed in detail, respectively.

The presence of CD117 positive cells in esophageal leiomyoma may lead to a misdiagnosis of GIST. We reviewed 46 esophageal tumors which were smooth muscle tumors or GIST. Based on morphology, immunohistochemistry and mutation analysis, there were 44 (95.6%) leiomyomas, 1 (2.2%) leiomyosarcoma, and 1 (2.2%) GIST. Variable numbers of CD117 positive cells were seen in all leiomyomas. Tryptase immunostaining identified mast cells in 93.2% (41/44) of leiomyomas, and the number of mast cells per tumor decreased significantly from tumors of the upper esophagus to the esophageal-gastric junction (p<0.01). Immunofluorescence study further confirmed the presence of two types of CD117 positive spindle cells which included spindle-shaped mast cells and DOG-1-positive interstitial cells of Cajal. This is the first study to systemically review mast cells in esophageal leiomyomas and tumors which may be included in the differential diagnosis. We demonstrate that both spindled mast cells and hyperplastic interstitial cells of Cajal are present within esophageal leiomyomas. The immunoreactivity of these cells with CD117 may suggest a diagnosis of GIST, but the presence of mast cells itself supports a diagnosis of esophageal leiomyoma.

AIM: Anticoagulants are commonly used to treat ischemic stroke. Its impact on cerebellar infarction has not been fully understood. METHODS: In the clinical study, we reviewed a consecutive series of patients with large-sized cerebellar infarction (diameter > 3 cm, n = 30) treated with or without anticoagulation. In animal study, cerebellar infarction operation was performed in 12 Cynomolgus monkeys. Then the animals were administrated with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) or vehicle for 14 days. RESULTS: Six patients died during the following treatment. All the subjects that died received anticoagulation therapy, while nobody in the survival group received such a therapy. Compared with sham-operated animals, all monkeys with cerebellar infarction have obvious neurological deficits. The number and size of the Purkinje cells in the cerebellar area were also reduced. Two animals in the LMWH group (33%) died, while all animals in the vehicle control group survived. Compared with the vehicle group, the neurological score in the LMWH group was significantly increased (P < 0.05). The water content in the cerebella was also significantly higher (P < 0.05). Edema, hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage occurred in the cerebella as well as brainstem of all the LMWH treated animals. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated the harmful effects of anticoagulation therapy on large-sized cerebellar infarction.

Lymph node (LN) retrieval is important for proper staging of colorectal carcinoma. Although various assistant techniques were recommended to facilitate LN identification, most of them were unavoidably time-consuming, resource intensive and costly. We prepared a modified GEWF solution (RE-GEWF) by use of recycled alcohol and a familiar dye, eosin and investigated its efficacy on 55 colorectal carcinoma specimens. Of the 55 studied cases, 33 of them with <12 LNs (Group A) and 22 with ≥12 LNs were detected (Group B) before RE-GEWF treatment. All were subsequently treated with RE-GEWF for 14-16h and were inspected again for LNs. The number of LNs revealed before and after RE-GEWF treatment was 539 and 476 respectively. The mean number of LNs per cases increased from 9.80±6.27 to 18.43±8.77. Twelve accessory LN metastases were found in 9 cases. Upgrade of pN stage was only present in 7 of the Group A cases. The results show that RE-GEWF is as effective as other reported LN revealing solutions. Use of RE-GEWF not only can assure the quality of LN detection, but also minimize the cost and reduce the release of waste.
