RESUMO

A new species of the genus Cirrhimuraena (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae), Cirrhimuraena indica sp. nov., is described based on eight specimens collected from the Paradip (Odisha) and Petuaghat harbours (West Bengal) along the Bay of Bengal. The species is distinct in having the upper jaw fringed with 16-17 cirri before posterior nostril and 4-5 in between the anterior and posterior nostrils on the side; dorsal fin originates above the level of gill opening, predorsal length is 9.3-10.9 in total length; the head is relatively large, the length is 9.3-9.8 in total length; no infraorbital pores are observed between the nostrils; teeth are numerous, small, conical and in bands on each jaw; pores are present before the gill opening 10-11 and before anus 47-48; pectoral-fin length is 2.4-2.8 in head length; predorsal vertebrae are 8-10, pre-anal vertebrae 43-47 and total vertebrae 164-169. In the maximum likelihood tree analysis for COI gene, the new species belongs to the same clade as the other congener of Cirrhimuraena chinensis and is separated from the species morphologically and genetically.

RESUMO

Gymnothorax aurocephalus sp. nov. is described herein based on 4 specimens. Three were collected from off Swaraj Dweep Island of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (AN Islands) from a depth of 125-130 m and one specimen off Interview Island, AN Islands at a depth of 90 m. This new species is distinguishable from its congeners by the following combination of characters: chocolate brown color overlain with small irregular white spots, golden skin shadings close to rictus; anus slightly before midbody; pointed and serrated jaw teeth; uniserial teeth in jaws and vomer; vertebral formula 7/61/148-149. The species is compared to all its congeners with white spots.

RESUMO

Strophidon McClelland is a muraenid genus with characteristic appearance of a very elongated body, a large mouth cleft and anteriorly placed eyes. The nomenclature and taxonomic history of species within Strophidon are contentious and its members are easily misidentified. In the present study, species of the genus Strophidon are revised based on morphological and molecular data, and five species are considered valid, including S. dawydoffi Prokofiev, S. dorsalis (Seale), S. sathete (Hamilton), S. ui Tanaka and a new species, S. tetraporus. Strophidon tetraporus sp. nov. is described based on 15 specimens from Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam with the unique characteristic of the constant presence of the fourth infraorbital pore among species of Strophidon. The intraspecific variation of vertebral formula within S. dorsalis is discussed based on molecular data. Muraena macrurus Bleeker and Thyrsoidea longissima Kaup are synonyms of S. sathete that can be distinguished from the most similar congener S. ui by a longer tail, smaller eyes and more inner maxillary and inner dentary teeth. A key to identify species of Strophidon is provided. The distribution and maximum size of each species are also re-evaluated.

A new snake eel (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae: Ophichthinae) species, Ophichthus kailashchandrai sp. nov., is described from three specimens, collected from the Shankarpur fishing harbour located on the northern part of the Bay of Bengal, West Bengal, India. Ophichthus kailashchandrai sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by having its dorsal-fin origin at the posterior third of the pectoral fin, preanal length 2.6-2.8 in TL, uniserial maxillary and mandibular teeth and vertebral count (predorsal vertebrae 14-15, preanal vertebrae 54-55, and total vertebrae 180-182).

RESUMO

A new species of snake eel, Ophichthus chennaiensis sp. nov. (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae: Ophichthinae), is described on the basis of a specimen collected from dumped fish disposed of by bottom trawlers at Kasimedu fishing harbour, Chennai. Ophichthus chennaiensis sp. nov is distinguished from its congeners by having its dorsal-fin origin one pectoral-fin length behind the pectoral-fin tip, preanal length 2.4 in TL, biserial maxillary, uniserial mandibular teeth, biserial to uniserial vomerine teeth, and its vertebrae (predorsal 19, preanal 53, and total vertebrae 154).

RESUMO

Ophichthus chilkensis Chaudhuri, 1916 has long been treated as a synonym of Pisodonophis cancrivorus (Richardson, 1848). O. chilkensis is hereby re-described on the basis of holotype from Chilika Lake, Odisha as well as ten fresh specimens from Talsari, Balasore district, Odisha and Digha, West Bengal. The present study confirms it belonging to the genus Ophichthus and resurrected as a valid species from the east coast of India. It is compared with its closest congener species, particularly with Ophichthus microcephalus Day, 1878, known from India.

RESUMO

Gymnothorax andamanensis sp. nov., a new short brown moray eel, is described here on the basis of two specimens collected from Port Mout, Port Blair, South Andaman (11.659327°N; 92.696148°E), caught using baited hand-lines in a sandy habitat at a depth of less than 2 m. The species is characterized in having the dorsal-fin origin before the gill opening, pre-anal length 2.1-2.2, jaw pores with black rim, two branchial pores, predorsal vertebrae 3, preanal vertebrae 57 and total vertebrae 135-136, teeth smooth, three large fang-like median intermaxillary teeth, biserial maxillary and uniserial vomerine teeth, and dentary teeth biserial with two teeth in each side in the second row of the dentary. The new species is compared with all 10 short brown unpatterned moray eels known from the world and two from Indian waters.

RESUMO

A new species of white-spotted moray eel Gymnothorax smithi sp. nov. is described based on three specimens collected from the southeastern Arabian Sea, India. This is the first deep water report of a moray eel from Indian waters from 200 m depth. This new species is distinguishable from its congeners by the following combination of characters: greyish brown body overlain with white spots of irregular shape, dorsal-fin origin anterior to gill opening, anus positioned slightly behind the mid-point of the body, serrated teeth and a unique vertebral count 3-5 /57/130-132. RESUMO

Gymnothorax odishi sp. nov., a new short brown moray eel, is described here on the basis of eleven specimens collected from Gopalpur, Odisha, along the east coast of India, Bay of Bengal. The species is characterized with dorsal-fin origin before gill opening, jaw pores with dark rim, small black patch just behind the eye of about eye size or more, gill opening with dark rim, two branchial pores, predorsal vertebrae 4, preanal vertebrae 55-58 and total vertebrae 133-138, three large fang like median intermaxillary teeth, uniserial maxillary and vomerine teeth. The new species is compared with all short brown unpatterned moray eels known from the world.

A new species of snake eel (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae: Ophichthinae), Ophichthus johnmccoskeri sp. nov., is described from three specimens collected from the northern part of the Bay of Bengal, India. Ophichthus johnmccoskeri sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by having the dorsal-fin origin well behind the pectoral-fin tips, by tooth pattern (lower jaw with a single row anteriorly followed by biserial teeth on anterior sides and tri-serial teeth posteriorly), and vertebral count (24 predorsal, 51-52 preanal, and 156-158 total).The new species has a single barbel between the anterior and posterior nostrils; vomerine teeth biserial anteriorly, multi to triserial and biserial medially and in a single row posteriorly; maxillary teeth biserial anteriorly and triserial posteriorly; tip of the lower jaw toothless; and tail length 1.6 times in total length.

Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) dighaensis n. sp. is described from the intestine of the fourfinger threadfin fish Eleutheronema tetradactylum (Shaw, 1804) from the Digha coast, West Bengal, India. Females were larger than males. In the male dorso-ventral lacunar canals well developed. Middle hooks in perfect circle, smaller than anterior hooks. Posterior hooks slightly smaller than middle hooks. Lateral anterior proboscis hooks larger than the others in same circles. Lateral posterior proboscis hooks equal to others in same circles. Lemnisci equal, longer reaching to testes in male. Male reproductive system usually occupies half of the total body length. Eggs were elliptical in shape with concentric membrane. Cement gland long, containing seven giant nuclei.

An elongate, brown unpatterned moray eel, Gymnothorax indicus sp. nov., is described based on four specimens collected from the northern Bay of Bengal. The new species is differentiated from other elongate, unpatterned moray eels in having the following combination of characters: anus at about mid-point of body, preanal length 2.0 in total length; snout blunt and short; dorsal fin margin black, 5 mandibular pores; maxillary teeth uniserial, sharp and depressible, total vertebrae 194 (MVF: 9-79-194).

RESUMO

A new genus, Cyathoshiva, of free-living marine nematodes from the subfamily Cyatholaiminae (family Cyatholaimidae, order Chromadorida), is described from the Indian coast. The new genus differs from other known Cyatholaiminae genera in having a unique combination of morphological characters: buccal cavity with well-developed dorsal tooth and two subventral teeth, proximally unpaired gubernaculum and non-cup shaped supplements. The type species Cyathoshiva amaleshi gen. n. sp. n. is characterized by having multispiral amphids with 4.5 turns, punctated cuticle with a weak lateral differentiation, a conical tail, three supplements possessing both tubular and setoid parts, and a gubernaculum with a serrated and dentate distal end.

RESUMO

A new species of short brown unpatterned moray eel of the genus Gymnothorax, Gymnothorax mishrai sp. nov. is described from a specimen of 324 mm total length, collected from the Bay of Bengal. The species is distinguished by having the dorsal-fin origin before gill opening, jaw pores with brown rim, two branchial pores, total vertebrae 134 (MVF: 9-59-134), three median intermaxillary teeth, uniserial maxillary and vomerine teeth. The new species is distinctly different from the other eight described species of this group. This species is also the first species of short brown unpatterned moray eel to be reported from India.

RESUMO

A small bodied, free-living marine nematode, Rhynchonema dighaensis sp. nov., is described from the intertidal sand of the east coast of India. It is characterized by having a small buccal cavity, longer left spicule and symmetrical dorsal gubernaculum apophysis. Other species of the genus are discussed with their type locality. A modified key has been prepared for species of Rhynchonema with an illustrated guide. Species of Rhynchonema primarily differ from each other by the shape and size of the spicules, shape of the gubernaculum and dorsal apophysis, size of the buccal cavity and position of the amphid.

A new species of the genus Hapalogenys, Hapalogenys bengalensis sp. nov. is described from fourteen specimens collected from the Bay of Bengal coast. The species is distinct in having three longitudinal dark stripes; pelvic-fin tip almost reaching the base of first anal-fin spine when depressed; transverse scale rows above lateral line 7-8, below lateral line 19-20; gill rakers 18 (7 on lower limb and 11 on upper limb); posterior angle ofjaw reaching vertical through anterior rim of eye. Genetic divergence (13.0-14.2%) and analysis of NJ tree shows that the new species is closely related to H. kishinouyei in the "Hapalogenys kishinouyei complex" with significant morphological difference from the other three species reported from the same complex.

Concentrations of 10 elements were studied from the pre-moult hard shelled and newly moulted (soft shelled) crabs (Scylla serrata) by the (Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence) EDXRF technique. The study evaluated the composition of all 10 elements from the body tissues and the exuvium of soft shelled and the carapace of pre-moulted hard-shelled crabs in order to evaluate the food value from nutritional and safety point of view for human consumption. The essential elements like K, Ca, Mn, Cu, etc., get reabsorbed from the carapace to the body tissues in order to meet the further requirement in the soft shelled crabs and are also utilized to some extent during the formation of new carapace, toxic element like Pb gets excreted during exuviation and element like Zn gets regulated, as and when become higher in bioavailable form. This study gives evidence that, the freshly moulted soft shelled crabs are more safe and nutritious than the hard-shelled crabs.

During the present study concentration of nine elements (K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Br and Pb) in different tissues of mud crab Scylla serrata from Mahanadi estuary, India were determined by the external PIXE set up at Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, India. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of the technique in analyzing both soft and hard tissue samples from marine organisms and opens the door for non-destructive, multi-elemental analysis of tissue samples with a very little sample preparation by direct irradiation. This technique can be well utilized for analyzing the tissue samples for environmental, toxicological and nutritional purposes. The study also demonstrates the elemental concentrations from tissue samples of any crustaceans from Mahanadi estuary for the first time. Sex based difference in the elemental concentration of the mud crabs were marked, which may be related to the growth rate and other biological activities. No significant difference in the concentration of elements (Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn) in the tissues of juveniles and adults of respective sex is observed, which indicated the active regulation of these elements by S. serrata.

In the mainstream culture to identify oneself as a "feminist" has been a fashion. Feminism covers all issues degrading and depriving women of their due in society vis-à-vis male members and it has started a crusade against atrocities on women across the globe. It is therefore regarded as synonymous with a movement and revolution to defend and promote issues involving women. However, the concerns that feminism raises do seem alien to tribal inhabitants in the Koraput district of Orissa, because, unknowingly, they are its champions. Its principles are ingrained in their very culture. They practice and follow feminism as a matter of habit that has come to them down the ages. They do not follow it out of fear, compassion, enlightenment, education or compulsion; it is a necessity that comes quite naturally to them. It has been spontaneous and indigenous.
