BACKGROUND/AIM: In our previous study, first-line eribulin (ERI) showed 25 weeks of progression-free survival (PFS). This study investigated the efficacy and safety of ERI re-administration in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: HER2-negative MBC patients who had never received chemotherapy for MBC received first-line ERI for 18 weeks if they did not have disease progression, and then one cycle of S-1 before ERI re-administration. RESULTS: Twelve patients received ERI re-administration. The PFS of re-administered ERI was 13 weeks. Total duration of ERI use was 30 weeks. The incidence and severity of adverse events were consistent with previous reports. CONCLUSION: In the first-line setting, the total PFS of eribulin was extended by S-1 administration before disease progression, compared with that of our previous report.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The tumor microenvironment plays an important role in tumor progression. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) have been reported to promote proliferation, invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis, and immunosuppression. Furthermore, angiogenesis has been reported to induce chemoresistance due to the inefficient distribution of drugs to cancer cells. However, the impact of TAMs on chemoresistance via angiogenesis in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of TAMs on the chemotherapeutic outcome in CRC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We enrolled 54 patients who underwent chemotherapy for unresectable metastatic CRC after resection of the primary tumor. We evaluated the density of TAMs and the degree of angiogenesis by immunohistochemistry and then explored the correlation between the density of TAMs and chemotherapeutic outcome. Furthermore, we assessed any correlation between the density of TAMs and that of neovascularity. RESULTS: The high-TAMs group had a significantly worse progression-free survival (p=0.0006) and a poorer response rate (p=0.0274) than the low-TAMs group. In addition, a positive correlation was observed between the density of TAMs and the degree of neovascularity (r=0.665, p=0.0004). CONCLUSION: TAMs were shown to promote chemoresistance via angiogenesis in CRC.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Blood transfusion and a large amount of intraoperative blood loss (IBL) have been reported to have a negative impact on long-term survival via immunosuppression. In recent years, thanks to the spread of laparoscopic surgery and the development of surgical devices, the average amount of IBL has decreased, as has the need for perioperative blood transfusion. Under such conditions, the prognostic significance of the amount of IBL is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the amount of IBL on long-term survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 277 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for stage II/III colorectal cancer were enrolled. RESULTS: The median amount of IBL was 30 ml, and 16 patients received blood transfusion. The overall survival rates were significantly better in the low-IBL (≤100 ml) group than in the high-IBL (>100 ml) group regardless of the blood transfusion. As the amount of IBL increased, the decline rate of the peripheral lymphocyte count increased. CONCLUSION: A large amount of IBL was associated with poor long-term survival, regardless of blood transfusion, in patients with colorectal cancer.

The interferon (IFN) pathway is critical for cytotoxic T cell activation, which is central to tumor immunosurveillance and successful immunotherapy. We demonstrate here that PKCλ/ι inactivation results in the hyper-stimulation of the IFN cascade and the enhanced recruitment of CD8+ T cells that impaired the growth of intestinal tumors. PKCλ/ι directly phosphorylates and represses the activity of ULK2, promoting its degradation through an endosomal microautophagy-driven ubiquitin-dependent mechanism. Loss of PKCλ/ι results in increased levels of enzymatically active ULK2, which, by direct phosphorylation, activates TBK1 to foster the activation of the STING-mediated IFN response. PKCλ/ι inactivation also triggers autophagy, which prevents STING degradation by chaperone-mediated autophagy. Thus, PKCλ/ι is a hub regulating the IFN pathway and three autophagic mechanisms that serve to maintain its homeostatic control. Importantly, single-cell multiplex imaging and bioinformatics analysis demonstrated that low PKCλ/ι levels correlate with enhanced IFN signaling and good prognosis in colorectal cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative anastomotic leakage (AL) is associated with not only prolonged hospital stay and increased medical costs, but also poor prognosis in esophageal cancer. Several studies have addressed the utility of various inflammation-based and/or nutritional markers as predictors for postoperative complications. However, none have been documented as specific predictors for AL in esophageal cancer. We aimed to identify predictors of AL after esophagectomy for thoracic esophageal cancer, focusing on preoperative inflammation-based and/or nutritional markers. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 295 patients who underwent radical esophagectomy for thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma between June 2007 and July 2020. As inflammation-based and/or nutritional markers, Onodera prognostic nutritional index, C-reactive protein (CRP)-to-albumin ratio (CAR) and modified Glasgow prognostic score were investigated. Optimal cut-off values of inflammation-based and/or nutritional markers for AL were determined by receiver operating characteristic curves. Predictors for AL were analyzed by logistic regression modeling. RESULTS: AL was observed in 34 patients (11.5%). In univariate analyses, preoperative body mass index (≥ 22.1 kg/m2), serum albumin level (≤ 3.8 g/dL), serum CRP level (≥ 0.06 mg/dL), CAR (≥ 0.0139), operation time (> 565 min) and blood loss (≥ 480 mL) were identified as predictors of AL. Multivariate analyses revealed higher preoperative CAR (≥ 0.0139) as an independent predictor of AL (p = 0.048, odds ratio = 3.02, 95% confidence interval 1.01-9.06). CONCLUSION: Preoperative CAR may provide a useful predictor of AL after esophagectomy for thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer (GC) results in extremely poor prognoses. The peritoneal cavity is covered by a monolayer of peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs). Interactions between GC cells and PMCs might play a pivotal role in peritoneal metastasis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) correlate with intercellular communication. Although intercellular communication between cancer cells and PMCs might be associated with the peritoneal metastatic process, the role of EVs from PMCs remains unclear. We investigated the effects of EVs from PMCs on GC cells. Three GC cell lines (OCUM-12, NUGC-3, and MKN74) and four mesothelial cell lines were used. The effects of EVs derived from the PMCs on the invasion and migration of GC cells were evaluated by Matrigel invasion assay. Factors contained in the PMC EVs were analyzed; extra-cellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) was detected in the EVs. The effects of an EMMPRIN inhibitor on the invasion-stimulating activity of EVs were examined. The EMMPRIN expressions of 110 GCs were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. PMC EVs significantly promoted the invasion of diffuse-type GC cells, i.e., OCUM-12 and NUGC-3 cells. EMMPRIN in the EVs stimulated the invasion of OCUM-12 and NUGC-3 cells. The invasion-stimulating activity of PMC EVs was inhibited by the EMMPRIN inhibitor. A high EMMPRIN expression in PMCs was significantly associated with worse cancer-specific survival and peritoneal-recurrence-free survival. EMMPRIN in EVs from PMCs might stimulate the malignant progression of diffuse-type GC. EMMPRIN might be a useful prognostic marker of recurrence in GC patients.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical Apgar score (SAS) has been validated as a risk assessment tool for postoperative complications. However, the utility of the SAS in elderly patients with colorectal cancer remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the utility of the SAS for predicting the severe complications in elderly patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 295 patients underwent radical surgery for colorectal cancer in elderly patients ≥75 years old. The SAS was calculated based on 3 intraoperative parameters: estimated blood loss (EBL), lowest mean arterial pressure, and lowest heart rate. Severe complications were defined as Clavien-Dindo classification grade ≥ IIIa. We divided all patients into 2 groups according to with or without severe complications. The optimal cut-off value of SAS for severe complications has been determined by receiver operator characteristic curve. Predictors for severe complications were analyzed by logistic regression modeling. RESULTS: Severe complications were observed in 57 patients (19.3%). Male, rectal cancer, operation time (>240 minutes), EBL (≥120 mL), and a low SAS (≤6) were significantly associated with severe complications in univariate analysis. A multivariate analysis revealed that male, rectal cancer, and a low SAS (≤6) were independent predictors for severe complications. CONCLUSIONS: A low SAS (≤6) was associated with severe complications after colorectal cancer surgery in elderly patients. The SAS is a valuable predictor for severe complications in elderly patients with colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) have been reported to reflect the anti-tumor immune status. However, recent investigations have demonstrated that intratumoral fibrosis is important as a factor affecting the infiltration of TILs. This study investigated the organ specificities of TIL infiltration and intratumoral fibrosis in primary colorectal cancer and distant metastases, as well as the relationship between the distribution of TILs and intratumoral fibrosis. METHODS: Patients who underwent resection of primary tumors or distant metastases for colorectal cancer with distant metastases were enrolled. We evaluated the TIL infiltration by immunohistochemical staining with CD3&CD8 and intratumoral fibrosis by immunohistochemical staining with α-SMA positive cancer-associated fibroblasts and Masson's trichrome staining against collagen fibers. The "ImageJ" was used to evaluate fibrosis, and the density of TILs in the dense and sparse areas of fibrosis was calculated. The Immunoscore (IS) was obtained based on the density of CD3+/CD8+TILs in the tumor center and invasive margin of the primary tumor. RESULTS: The degree of CD3+/CD8+TIL infiltration in peritoneal metastases was significantly lower than that in liver and lung metastases. The area ratio of α-SMA positive cancer-associated fibroblasts and collagen fibers in peritoneal metastases was significantly higher than that of liver and lung metastases. Furthermore, the density of TILs in the high-fibrosis area was significantly lower than that in the low-fibrosis area. In the high-IS group of primary tumors, the degree of TIL infiltration in distant metastases was significantly higher than that in the low-IS group. CONCLUSION: The infiltration of T lymphocytes into tumors is prevented in peritoneal metastases of colorectal cancer due to the high intratumoral fibrosis, which may lead to treatment resistance and a poor prognosis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: No biomarkers that predict the benefit from anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibodies have been identified. It is necessary to discover biomarkers that can identify patients who are more likely to benefit from bevacizumab-containing treatment, especially those who are more likely to benefit from treatment with bevacizumab beyond progression (BBP). Levels of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), reported to be an indirect marker of hypoxia and angiogenesis, may be a useful marker for monitoring the efficacy of suppression of angiogenesis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The clinical data of 91 patients with unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer who were treated with bevacizumab-containing chemotherapy as first-line treatment were collected and studied. RESULTS: In the second-line treatment, the bevacizumab plus chemotherapy group showed significantly better progression-free survival (PFS) in comparison to the chemotherapy-alone group in patients with low post-first-line-treatment serum LDH levels. On the other hand, no significant differences in the PFS rate were observed between the two groups in patients with high post-first-line-treatment serum LDH levels. CONCLUSION: The post-first-line-treatment serum LDH levels may, therefore, be useful marker for predicting the efficacy of treatment with BBP.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of adjuvant chemotherapy in elderly patients with stage III colorectal cancer in a real-world setting. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 165 patients of ≥70 years of age with stage III colorectal cancer who underwent a curative operation between 2008 and 2020 were enrolled in this study. RESULTS: Among septuagenarians, the relapse-free and overall survival rates in the single-agent therapy group and the combination therapy group were significantly better than those in the group treated by surgery alone. However, no significant differences were observed in the relapse-free and overall survival rates of the single-agent therapy group and the combination therapy group. Among octogenarians in whom all regimens were single-agent therapy, adjuvant chemotherapy tended to improve the relapse-free and overall survival rates but not the time to recurrence or cancer-specific survival. CONCLUSION: Single-agent adjuvant chemotherapy may be a useful treatment option for septuagenarians with stage III colorectal cancer. However, the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy in octogenarians was not shown in this study.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) patients frequently develop peritoneal metastasis. Recently, it has been reported that peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) activated by GC cells acquire a migratory capacity and promote GC cell invasion. The invasiveness of PMCs reportedly depends on the activity of Tks5, an adaptor protein required for invadopodia formation. However, the relationship between clinicopathologic features and Tks5 expression in PMCs has been poorly documented. In this study, we evaluated the clinicopathologic significance of the Tks5 expression of PMCs in GC patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 110 GC patients who underwent gastrectomy were enrolled in this study. Tks5 expressions in PMCs from the greater omentum, lesser omentum and retroperitoneum were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. We analyzed the correlation between Tks5 expressions in PMCs and the patients' clinicopathologic features. RESULTS: Tks5 expression was found in 71 (64.5%) of the 110 patients, while 39 (35.5%) were Tks5-negative. Tks5 positivity was significantly (p = 0.038) associated with a greater tumor depth (i.e., T3/4 compared with T1/T2). Peritoneal recurrence was found in 12 of 98 cases within 3 years of surgery. The 3-year peritoneal recurrence-free survival (PRFS) rate in Tks5-positive cases was significantly poorer than that in Tks5-negative cases (80.1% vs 97.4%, p = 0.024). Multivariate analysis revealed that Tks5 positivity and lymph node metastasis were independent factors for PRFS. CONCLUSION: Tks5 is frequently expressed in PMCs in advanced-stage gastric cancer. Tks5 might be a useful predictor for peritoneal recurrence in GC patients.

BACKGROUND: In the rapidly-progressing healthcare environment, it is essential to improve treatment quality through continuous clarification of the needs and concerns of esophageal cancer patients and their families. Effective collaboration between information providers and academic associations could help make such clarified information available. METHODS: We analyzed esophageal cancer patients' views and preferences (PVPs) using data that were previously obtained from medical staff in Japan. Based on these PVPs, we created a question and answer (Q&A) resource through collaboration with the Cancer Information Service in Japan (CISJ) and the Japan Esophageal Society (JES). RESULTS: Regarding esophageal cancer, "diet and eating behavior" was the most frequent PVP mentioned by patients and their families, followed by "treatment-related symptoms and adverse effects" and "daily life, recuperation, and survivorship." These PVPs were noted by a wide variety of medical specialties. By analyzing the PVPs, the CISJ developed 11 proposed questions and sent them to the JES, which then created answers based on evidence and clinical-practice-associated consensus. The resultant Q&A resource was uploaded to the CISJ website with mutual linkage to the JES website. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed the usefulness of collecting esophageal-cancer-related PVPs from medical staff and fostering successful collaboration between a cancer-information provider and an academic association. This arrangement may represent a model case for developing a sustainable system that can satisfactorily respond to PVPs regarding other cancers and/or issues.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cancer (EC) is associated with malnutrition in the vast majority of patients, and this often leads to sarcopenia, which is characterised by loss of skeletal muscle mass (SMM). Although sarcopenia could be one of the risk factors for postoperative pneumonia (PP), the optimal definition of sarcopenia using skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) remains unknown for predicting PP after esophagectomy in patients with EC. Therefore, this study aimed to identify high-risk patients for PP after esophagectomy through evaluating SMI by BIA and set an appropriate cut-off value for this purpose. METHOD: A total of 73 patients with EC who underwent subtotal esophagectomy with lymph node dissection at Osaka City University Hospital between 2017 and 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. The association between PP and perioperative factors including SMI by BIA were analysed. When SMI was lower than the cut-off values proposed by two study groups (Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) and original European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP)) or SMM was less than 90% of standard, the patient was diagnosed with sarcopenia. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to set the appropriate cut-off value of SMI, and a new criterion (modified EWGSOP) was formulated by using the value. Clinicopathological factors and postoperative complications between sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups were compared, which were classified by four different criteria: (1) AWGS, (2) original EWGSOP, (3) < 90% standard and (4) modified EWGSOP criteria. RESULTS: Nine patients (12.3%) were with PP grade III or higher. Total SMI as well as body mass index (BMI), transthyretin and % vital capacity (%VC) were found to be significantly associated with PP (Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ III). BMI, total and appendicular SMI of sarcopenic patients were found to be lower than those of non-sarcopenic patients. Low serum albumin and %VC were significantly associated with sarcopenia defined by modified EWGSOP criteria. The rate of PP was significantly higher in sarcopenic patients when the original and modified EWGSOP criteria were used (p = 0.0079 and 0.0015, respectively). A multivariate analysis revealed that sarcopenic state by modified EWGSOP criteria was the significant independent predictive factor of PP [p = 0.0031, hazard ratio (HR) = 10.1; 95% confidential interval (CI): 2.12-76.9]. CONCLUSION: Preoperative sarcopenia by modified EWGSOP criteria could be the best indicator using BIA for predicting PP after esophagectomy in patients with EC.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Recently, elevated levels of postoperative inflammatory markers have been reported to be associated with poorer long-term survival outcomes, regardless of the occurrence of infectious complications, in gastroenterological malignancies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between postoperative inflammation and shorter long-term survival after resection of colorectal liver metastases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 104 patients who underwent R0 resection for colorectal liver metastases were enrolled. The CRPmax levels were defined as the highest postoperative serum C-reactive protein levels during hospital stay. RESULTS: The high-CRPmax group had a significantly lower relapse-free survival rate than the low-CRPmax group, regardless of the occurrence of infectious complications. CONCLUSION: In colorectal liver metastasis as well as other malignancies, elevated postoperative levels of serum C-reactive protein are associated with shorter long-term survival, regardless of the occurrence of infectious complications.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer subtypes are known to have different metastatic recurrence sites. Distant metastases are often observed during the post-operative course in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-enriched breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer, but are relatively rare in those with hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative (HR+/HER2-) breast cancer. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) serve as an index to monitor tumor immune microenvironment and may possibly predict the prognosis and therapeutic effect in breast cancer. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between TIL density and recurrence site in HR+/HER2- breast cancer. METHODS: In stages I-II of HR+/HER2- breast cancer patients who underwent surgery as the first treatment and received adjuvant endocrine therapy (except adjuvant chemotherapy), forty-two patients relapsed after surgery. TILs were evaluated using needle biopsy specimens for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Morphological assessment was conducted using conventional hematoxylin and eosin staining. RESULTS: Six patients had no TILs density. In them, local recurrence was significantly less (p = 0.022), while distant metastases were significantly more (p = 0.015) compared to those in patients with TIL density. Therefore, for the prediction of distant metastases in HR+/HER2- breast cancer without chemotherapy, TILs could be used as predictors in univariate analysis (p = 0.015, odds ratio [OR] = 0.127), although not as independent factors (p = 0.285, OR = 0.144). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that TILs may predict distant metastatic recurrence in stages I-II of HR+/HER2- breast cancer in patients who do not undergo chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Asporin (ASPN), a member of the proteoglycan family, has been shown to have a close correlation with cancer progression. It is not known whether ASPN is an oncogenic driver or a tumor suppressor in human gastric cancer. We sought herein to determine the relationship between ASPN expression and clinicopathological features of gastric cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 296 gastric cancer patients (diffuse type, n = 144; intestinal type, n = 152) were enrolled. The ASPN expression level in each case was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: ASPN was mainly found on stromal cells, especially on fibroblasts in tumor stroma, i.e., cancer-associated fibroblasts. The ASPN expression on either cancer cells or stromal cells was significantly high in macroscopic scirrhous-type tumors (p < 0.001) and histologically abundant stroma-type tumors (p < 0.001). Interestingly, a Kaplan-Meier survival curve of the 144 cases of diffuse-type gastric cancer revealed a significantly poorer prognosis in patients with ASPN-positive expression (p = 0.043; log rank) compared to those with ASPN-negative expression, but the prognoses were not significantly different in these subgroups of the 152 cases of intestinal-type gastric cancer. A multivariate analysis with respect to overall survival showed that ASPN expression on stromal cells and/or cancer cells was significantly correlated with overall survival in patients with diffuse-type gastric cancer (p = 0.041). CONCLUSION: In gastric cancer, ASPN was expressed mainly on stromal cells and partially on cancer cells. ASPN expression on stromal cells and/or cancer cells might be a useful prognostic marker in patients with diffuse-type gastric cancer.

RESUMO

A 50s old woman admitted to our hospital with anal pain, who was diagnosed as rectal gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). After neoadjuvant therapy with imatinib mesylate for 6 months, the tumor reduced by 75% from its original size and anus preserving operation(low anterior resection)was performed. After operation adjuvant therapy with imatinib mesylate was performed for 2 years and 6 months. The patient is alive without recurrence 5 years after surgery. It is suggested that neoadjuvant therapy with imatinib mesylate is useful and safety for large rectal GIST, from the standpoint of anal preservation.

A 52-year-old woman experienced right breast pain and detected a mammary tumor 6 months ago. She then noticed rapid enlargement of the tumor, which was suspected to be a borderline malignant phyllodes tumor. The tumor size was approximately 15 cm and presented with skin congestion but without infiltration. The tumor showed internal heterogeneous echo and rich blood flow signals on breast ultrasonography. Ultrasonography also showed swelling of the axillary lymph node. Lymph node cytology revealed the presence of atypical cells in the lymph node, and CT scan showed lymph node metastasis in the right axilla and no distant metastases. We performed mastectomy with lymph node sampling. Pathological examination of the specimens confirmed a malignant phyllodes tumor and a metastatic lymph node. One month later, a subcutaneous mass and multiple pulmonary nodules were identified on a chest CT scan. Chest wall irradiation(45 Gy)and chemotherapy were performed, but the number of pulmonary nodules, pleural effusion, and size of the subcutaneous mass continued to increase. Although she underwent another chemotherapeutic treatment, she died 5 months after the surgery. Thus, we report a case of a malignant phyllodes tumor with an extremely rare lymph node metastasis, which rapidly progressed even though multimodal therapy was performed.

Several studies have reported that tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM cells) or tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are associated with a good prognosis. The aim of this study was to clarify the association of TRM cells and TLSs in the tumor immune microenvironment in gastric cancer (GC). We performed immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence staining to detect the presence of CD103+ T cells and to assess the association between CD103+ T cells and TLSs. CD103+ T cells were observed in the tumor epithelium accompanied by CD8+ T cells and were associated with a better prognosis in GC. Furthermore, CD103+ T cells were located around TLSs, and patients with CD103high had more rich TLSs. Patients who had both CD103high cells and who were TLS-rich had a better prognosis than patients with CD103low cells and who were TLS-poor. Moreover, for patients who received PD-1 blockade therapy, CD103high and TLS-rich predicted a good response. Flow cytometry was performed to confirm the characteristics of CD103+ CD8+ T cells and showed that CD103+ CD8+ T cells in GC expressed higher levels of PD-1, granzyme B, and interferon-γ than CD103- CD8+ T cells. Our results suggested that CD103+ CD8+ cells in GC are correlated with TLSs, resulting in enhanced antitumor immunity in GC.

BACKGROUND/AIM: We previously showed that an elevated postoperative serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level has a negative impact on long-term survival outcomes, regardless of the occurrence of infectious complications in colorectal cancer. However, the cause of postoperative inflammation could not be properly evaluated, because patient background factors, such as the surgical approach (open/laparoscopic), were not unified. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 277 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for stage II/III colorectal cancer were enrolled. RESULTS: The high-CRP group had lower relapse-free and overall survival rates in comparison to the low-CRP group. A high postoperative serum CRP level was significantly associated with a larger tumor diameter and longer operation time, and tended to be associated with a higher T stage and larger amount of bleeding. CONCLUSION: Larger tumor volume, longer operation time and larger amount of bleeding were associated with the promotion of postoperative inflammation, which worsened long-term survival outcomes in colorectal cancer.
