Objective: To analyze the available evidence in the literature regarding the topical use of essential oils as potential agents for dental clinic activities. Methods: BVS and PubMed databases were utilized. Key articles addressing the application of essential oils in dentistry were selected, using scientific and common names associated with "dentistry" as keywords in Portuguese and English, published between 2018 and 2022. Results: A table was compiled containing the main essential oils commonly used54 oils in total. Thirty-four oils were excluded as they had no connection to dentistry, leaving 20 oils associated with clinical practice. The analysis of these oils revealed their primary properties, showing efficacy in various areas such as periodontics, endodontics, pediatric dentistry, healing of oral cavity lesions, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anesthetic effects. Conclusion: Thus, it can be observed that there is an application of essential oils in dentistry, and they offer various benefits when used correctly and appropriately, manifesting effects that address the patient universally. In this regard, further studies in this area are necessary as it presented a considerable number of positive results in the use of essential oils in dental practice to fully take advantage of the benefits offered by these oils.
RESUMO
Sex workers, including female ones, have a higher risk of developing cancer and oral diseases due to the overlapping of risk factors. To characterize oral health status and healthcare practices and behaviors in female sex workers. Both quantitative and qualitative concomitant approaches were used. A closed-ended questionnaire, clinical examination, and semi-structured interview were administered, from July 2017 to August 2018, to 21 intentionally selected participants, in the city of Itajaí, southern Brazil. Although the participants reported having good oral health and healthcare habits, some oral diseases and harmful habits were observed. Poor oral hygiene and habits such as smoking, alcohol, and illicit drug use were found. Most of the participants had undergone gynecological follow-up in the last 12 months. Qualitative analysis gave rise to six categories: Social aspects of working as a sex worker, Work routine, Sexual practices and behaviors and protection from sexually transmitted infections, Practices and behaviors (including unprotected sun exposure, smoking, and alcohol use at work), Use of illicit drugs at work, and General and oral health care and perceptions about their oral health. Oral health status of the participants was variable, and most of them smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol, and consumed illicit drugs at work. Preventive condom use was reported. Most of them underwent recent serological tests for sexual diseases and gynecological follow-up, incentivized by the community health workers that facilitate access to public services.

PURPOSE: To systematically review (SR) and critically appraise studies that investigated the diagnostic capability of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the assessment of intraosseous lesions of the jaws. METHODS: Six main electronic databases and three gray literature databases were searched aiming diagnostic studies, which were selected in a two-phase process. Risk of bias (RoB) of included studies was assessed using the Revised Tool for the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies. RESULTS: A total of eight articles were included, of which six evaluated the FNAC smear technique exclusively, one assessed both smear and cell-block techniques, while one investigated only the cell-block technique. With regard to the FNAC smear technique, from 134 benign lesions investigated, concordance with the histopathological diagnosis was achieved in 64.17% of cases. In addition, considering the 32 malignant lesions assessed through this technique, concordance with histopathology was achieved in all cases. Regarding the cell-block technique, only benign lesions (n = 40) were evaluated in the included studies, in which the concordance rate with histopathology was of 77.5%. The overall RoB judgment was "at risk of bias" for seven included studies mostly due to lack of information or reportedly absence of blinding of evaluator. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this SR, FNAC presented modest to satisfactory diagnostic capability for the assessment of intraosseous jaw lesions, showing concordance rates higher than 64% for the smear and 77% for the cell-block technique. Also, considerably high concordance rates were found for the assessment of malignant lesions regarding FNAC smear technique.
