BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intra-islet heparan sulfate (HS) plays an important role in the maintenance of the pancreatic islet function. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect mechanism of HS loss on the functioning of islets in diabetic mice. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The hypoglycemic effect of a heparanase inhibitor, OGT2115, was tested in a streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice model. The islets of pancreas sections were also stained to reveal their morphology. An insulinoma MIN6 cell line and primary isolated murine islets were used to investigate the effect of OGT2115 in vitro. KEY RESULTS: Intra-islet HS was clearly lost in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice due to the increased heparanase expression in damaged islets. OGT2115 prevented intra-islet HS loss to improve the glucose profile and insulin secretion in streptozotocin-treated mice. The apoptosis of pancreatic beta cells, the infiltration of mononuclear macrophages, CD4 and CD8 positive T-cells in islets was reduced by OGT2115 in streptozotocin-treated mice, but OGT2115 did not alter the direct streptozotocin-induced damage in vitro. The expression of heparanase was increased in high glucose-treated isolated islets but not in response to direct streptozotocin stimulation. Further experiments showed that high glucose stimuli could decrease the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) in cultured islets, thereby relieving the PPARγ-induced inhibition of heparanase gene expression. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Hyperglycemia could cause intra-islet HS loss by elevating the expression of heparanase, thereby aggravating inflammatory cell infiltration and islet damage. Inhibition of heparanase might provide benefit for pancreatic beta cell protection in type 1 diabetes.

To gain a better understanding of the day-night variation characteristics of water-soluble ions, PM2.5 samples were continuously collected for two months in the Nanjing Jiangbei New Area during winter. The diurnal variation and sources of water-soluble ions were studied. Results showed that the mass concentration of water-soluble ions ranged from 17.07 µg·m-3 to 168.43 µg·m-3 with a mean value of (59.01±30.75) µg·m-3. The average mass concentration of water-soluble ions in daytime was higher than that in the nighttime. The concentration ratio of NO3- and NH4+ to total ion concentrations was higher at night, while SO42- and Cl- were higher during daytime. SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+ (SNA) were the dominant species of water-soluble ions in PM2.5 in Nanjing. The mass concentration of SNA on polluted days was higher than that on clean days. The ratio of the anion-cation balance (AE/CE) was larger than 1, indicating that the PM2.5 was acidic. There was a significant linear correlation between NH4+ with NO3- and SO42-, indicating that it occurred mainly in the form of NH4NO3 and (NH4)2SO4 in PM2.5. The PMF source apportionment indicated that water-soluble ions of PM2.5 were mainly derived from motor vehicle emissions, fossil fuel combustion, biomass burning, and dust in the Nanjing Jiangbei New Area.

As problems with the overuse of radical prostate cancer (PCa) treatment are increasingly exposed, focal therapy represents the direction of low- or intermediate-risk PCa management in the future. However, inaccurate diagnosis and low controllability of focal therapy hinder its clinical translation. In this study, we develop simple structural cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartic (cRGD) peptide-modified and indocyanine green (ICG)-loaded microbubbles (cRGD-ICG-MBs) for ultrasound-photoacoustic imaging and multi-synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT) to address the above problems. Precise PCa diagnosis is achieved by molecular ultrasound imaging. cRGD-targeting and low-frequency ultrasound with an amplitude of 500 kPa convert MBs into nanoparticles for enhanced ICG delivery. A low-frequency 2500-kPa amplitude ultrasound enables temporary vasculature destruction, which minimizes heat loss during PTT. Specifically, ICG in the tumor region is 14-fold higher than the control, resulting in satisfactory PTT. Our study highlights that this theranostic strategy possesses considerable clinical translational potential, especially in mini-invasive and individualized PCa therapy.

BACKGROUND: Fulvic acid (FA) is a kind of plant growth regulator, which can promote plant growth, play an important role in fighting against drought, improve plant stress resistance, increase production and improve quality. However, the function of FA in tea plants during drought stress remain largely unknown. RESULTS: Here, we examined the effects of 0.1 g/L FA on genes and metabolites in tea plants at different periods of drought stress using transcriptomics and metabolomics profiles. Totally, 30,702 genes and 892 metabolites were identified. Compared with controlled groups, 604 and 3331 differentially expressed metabolite genes (DEGs) were found in FA-treated tea plants at 4 days and 8 days under drought stress, respectively; 54 and 125 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) were also found at two time points, respectively. Bioinformatics analysis showed that DEGs and DEMs participated in diverse biological processes such as ascorbate metabolism (GME, AO, ALDH and L-ascorbate), glutathione metabolism (GST, G6PDH, glutathione reduced form and CYS-GYL), and flavonoids biosynthesis (C4H, CHS, F3'5'H, F3H, kaempferol, quercetin and myricetin). Moreover, the results of co-expression analysis showed that the interactions of identified DEGs and DEMs diversely involved in ascorbate metabolism, glutathione metabolism, and flavonoids biosynthesis, indicating that FA may be involved in the regulation of these processes during drought stress. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that FA enhanced the drought tolerance of tea plants by (i) enhancement of the ascorbate metabolism, (ii) improvement of the glutathione metabolism, as well as (iii) promotion of the flavonoids biosynthesis that significantly improved the antioxidant defense of tea plants during drought stress. This study not only confirmed the main strategies of FA to protect tea plants from drought stress, but also deepened the understanding of the complex molecular mechanism of FA to deal with tea plants to better avoid drought damage.

Nop9 is an essential factor in the processing of pre-ribosomal RNA. Its absence in yeast is lethal, and defects in the human ortholog are associated with breast cancer, autoimmunity, and learning/language impairment. PUF family RNA-binding proteins are best known for sequence-specific RNA recognition, and most contain eight α-helical repeats that bind to the RNA bases of single-stranded RNA. Nop9 is an unusual member of this family in that it contains eleven repeats and recognizes both RNA structure and sequence. Here we report a crystal structure of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Nop9 in complex with its target RNA within the 20S pre-ribosomal RNA. This structure reveals that Nop9 brings together a C-terminal module recognizing the 5' single-stranded region of the RNA and a bifunctional N-terminal module recognizing the central double-stranded stem region. We further show that the 3' single-stranded region of the 20S target RNA adds sequence-independent binding energy to the RNA-Nop9 interaction. Both the N- and C-terminal modules retain the characteristic sequence-specific recognition of PUF proteins but the N-terminal module has also evolved a distinct interface, which allows Nop9 to recognize either single-stranded RNA sequences or RNAs with a combination of single-stranded and structured elements.

There has been increasing interest in identifying factors to predict subjective well-being in the emerging field of positive psychology over the past two decades. Dispositional hope, which reflects one's goal-directed tendencies, including both pathway thinking (planning to meet goals) and agency thinking (goal-directed determination), has emerged as a stable predictor for subjective well-being. However, the neurobiological substrates of dispositional hope and the brain-hope mechanism for predicting subjective well-being remain unclear. Here, we examined these issues in 231 high school graduates within the same grade by estimating cortical gray matter volume (GMV) utilizing a voxel-based morphometry method based on structural magnetic resonance imaging. Whole-brain regression analyses and prediction analyses showed that higher dispositional hope was stably associated with greater GMV in the left supplementary motor area (SMA). Furthermore, mediation analyses revealed that dispositional hope mediated the relation between left SMA volume and subjective well-being. Critically, our results were obtained after adjusting for age, sex, family socioeconomic status and total GMV. Altogether, our study presents novel evidence for the neuroanatomical basis of dispositional hope and suggests an underlying indirect effect of dispositional hope on the link between brain gray matter structure and subjective well-being.

A recently developed synchronous precursor selection (SPS) mass spectrometry to the third (MS3) protocol enables more accurate multiplexed quantification of proteins/peptides using tandem mass tags (TMT) through comparison of reporter ion intensities at the MS3 level. However, challenges still exist for TMT-based simultaneous quantification and identification of intact glycopeptides due to inefficient peptide backbone fragmentation when using collision-induced dissociation (CID). To overcome this limitation, here we report an improved SPS/ETD workflow for TMT-based intact glycopeptide quantification and identification. The SPS/ETD approach was implemented on an Orbitrap Tribrid mass spectrometer and begins with selection of a parent ion in the MS scan, followed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS2) fragmentation by CID in the ion trap. Following MS2 fragmentation, SPS enables simultaneous isolation of the top 10 MS2 fragment ions for further higher energy collisional dissociation (HCD) fragmentation with the resulting MS3 fragments detected in an Orbitrap analyzer. Here, in addition to the standard SPS workflow, an electron-transfer dissociation (ETD) MS2 was performed and analyzed in the ion trap. The resultant ETD and CID spectra were used for the identification of the intact glycopeptides, while the quantitative comparison of site-specific glycans was achieved utilizing TMT reporter ions from HCD MS3 spectra. For intact glycopeptides, through systematic optimization and evaluation using a glycoprotein interference model, the SPS/ETD approach was demonstrated to offer improved accuracy, precision, and sensitivity compared to traditional data-dependent MS2 quantification, while maintaining the glycopeptide identification capability. Finally, this workflow was applied for the site-specific quantitative comparison of the glycoforms for two therapeutic enzymes (Cerezyme and VPRIV) and their different lots. The results demonstrate that this workflow is suitable for TMT-based intact glycopeptide characterization of glycoproteins.

BACKGROUND: Different mulches have variable effects on soil physicochemical characteristics, bacterial and fungal communities and ecosystem functions. However, the information about soil microbial diversity, community structure and ecosystem function in tea plantation under different mulching patterns was limited. In this study, we investigated bacterial and fungal communities of tea plantation soils under polyethylene film and peanut hull mulching using high-throughput 16S rRNA and ITS rDNA gene Illumina sequencing. RESULTS: The results showed that the dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi, and the dominant fungal phyla were Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota and Basidiomycota in all samples, but different mulching patterns affected the distribution of microbial communities. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Nitrospirae in peanut hull mulching soils (3.24%) was significantly higher than that in polyethylene film mulching soils (1.21%) in bacterial communities, and the relative abundances of Mortierellomycota and Basidiomycota in peanut hull mulching soils (33.72, 21.93%) was significantly higher than that in polyethylene film mulching soils (14.88, 6.53%) in fungal communities. Peanut hull mulching increased the diversity of fungal communities in 0-20 cm soils and the diversity of bacterial communities in 20-40 cm soils. At the microbial functional level, there was an enrichment of bacterial functional features, including amino acid transport and metabolism and energy production and conversion, and there was an enrichment of fungal functional features, including undefined saprotrophs, plant pathogens and soils aprotrophs. CONCLUSIONS: Unique distributions of bacterial and fungal communities were observed in soils under organic mulching. Thus, we believe that the organic mulching has a positive regulatory effect on the soil bacterial and fungal communities and ecosystem functions, and so, is more suitable for tea plantation.

BACKGROUND: To obtain high-yield histological samples by targeted prostate cancer (PCa) biopsy is the current trend compared with transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided systematic histological biopsy, which is regarded as the gold standard for prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis. In this paper, we present a targeted PCa imaging strategy using a real-time molecular photoacoustic imaging system integrated with a handheld US probe (PAI/US) and synthesized an integrin αvß3 targeted probe based on ICG (cRGD-ICG). METHODS: To prepare cRGD-ICG, ICG-NHS was linked to cRGD through carboxyl-co-reaction. In vitro PA imaging ability of cRGD-ICG was tested. Orthotopic PCa-bearing rats were used as animal models. After injected with either cRGD-ICG or non-targeted probe, rats were implemented with PA imaging to confirm the specific accumulation of cRGD-ICG at tumor region. Moreover, pathological frozen slices were made to observe distribution of the probe in prostate tissue ex vivo. RESULTS: A small molecular PAI probe was synthesized and exhibited excellent targeted imaging ability in vitro. In vivo photoacoustic imaging was carried out after intravenous injection of cRGD-ICG in orthotopic PCa-bearing rats under the facilitation of the PAI/US system. Maximum molecular photoacoustic signals were observed in the tumor area in vivo after the probe injection, which showed 3.8-fold higher signal enhancement than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Significantly higher cRGD-ICG accumulation was observed under confocal microscopy in the tumor region than in normal prostate tissue. CONCLUSIONS: All our results showed that the comprehensive strategy provided a high-yield and reliable method for PCa diagnosis and targeted prostate biopsy, with great clinical translation potential.

BACKGROUND: Gibberellic acid (GA3 ), a plant-growth regulator, is often used to obtain enlarged table grape berries and induce seedlessness in them. However, the effects of GA3 on rachis elongation and bunch compactness have seldom been reported in wine-grape production. We assessed the effects of GA3 spraying on wine-grape inflorescences and bunches and their practical implications for viticulture in the Jiaodong Peninsula, China. RESULTS: Various GA3 concentrations were sprayed on field-grown Vitis vinifera L. 'Cabernet Franc' (CF) and 'Cabernet Sauvignon' (CS) grapevines before anthesis in the Jiaodong Peninsula, China, in 2015 and 2016. Inflorescence length during berry development was measured, and flavonoids and aroma compounds in the fruit were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS), respectively. For both cultivars, 50 and 100 mg L-1 GA3 caused significant elongation of the rachis, whereas there was no significant effect on inflorescence growth and berry seed number. Anthocyanin, flavonol, and flavan-3-ol levels in mature berries were not significantly influenced by GA3 spraying, whereas C13 -norisoprenoids were modified. CONCLUSION: The application of 50-100 mg L-1 GA3 prior to grapevine anthesis caused elongation of inflorescences and bunches, and eased cluster compactness in CF and CS, and no negative effects were observed on the yield and seed numbers. The concentration and composition of flavonoids and most aroma compounds were not influenced, except that the norisoprenoids were increased by 50 mg L-1 GA3 applications. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

The balance of major excitatory (glutamate, Glu) and inhibitory (γ-aminobutyric acid, GABA), named as E/I neurotransmission, is critical for proper information processing. Anxiety-like responses upon stress are accompanied by abnormal alterations in the formation and function of synapses, resulting in the imbalance of E/I neurotransmission in the amygdala. Liver X receptors (LXRs), including LXRα and LXRß isoforms, are nuclear receptors responsible for regulating central nervous system (CNS) functions besides maintaining metabolic homeostasis. However, little is known about the contribution of LXRs in E/I balance in regulating anxiety-related behaviors induced by stress. In this study, we found stress-induced anxiety led to the expression reduction of LXRß not LXRα in mice amygdala. GW3965, a dual agonist for both LXRα and LXRß, alleviated anxiety-like behaviors of stressed mice through activation of LXRß, confirmed by the knockdown of LXRß mediated by lentiviral shRNAs in the basolateral amygdala (BLA). This was paralleled by correcting the disequilibrium of E/I neurotransmission in the stressed BLA. Importantly, GW3965 exerted anxiolytic effects by correcting the promoted amplitude and frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic current (mEPSC), and augmenting the decreased that of miniature inhibitory postsynaptic current (mIPSC) in the stressed BLA. This suggests that stress-induced anxiety-like behaviors can largely be ascribed to the deficit of LXRß signaling in E/I neurotransmission in BLA. These findings highlight the deficiency of LXRß signaling in the amygdala linked to anxiety disorder, and LXRß activation may represent a potential novel target for anxiety treatment with an alteration in synaptic transmission in the amygdala.

BACKGROUND: A large number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that traditional Chinese exercises (TCE) have certain advantages in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). However, due to the diversity of TCE methods, their relative effectiveness has not been studied and explained. Therefore, based on the network meta-analysis (NMA), this study will compare the differences in the effectiveness of TCE methods in the treatment of LDH, in order to provide a reference for clinical treatment. METHODS: We will search PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CHKD-CNKI), WANFANG database (Chinese Medicine Premier), Chinese Biomedical Literature database VIP for relevant RCTs of ACU treatments for POP, from their inceptions to March 18, 2019. STATA 15.0 and GEMTC software will be used to perform a NMA. The evidence will be evaluated by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach and the type 1 error rate will be assessed by trial sequential analysis. RESULTS: The results of this review will be submitted to a recognized journal for publication. CONCLUSION: This proposed systematic review will evaluate the different advantages of various types of TCE in the treatment of LDH.

Objectives: Herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM) is a costimulatory molecule, and has been proved to play an important role in airway inflammatory and remodeling processes of asthma. We aimed to investigate the expression of HVEM gene in patients with asthma as a means of assessing disease severity.Methods: This study was carried out on 59 subjects, 16 patients with mild persistent asthma, 11 patients with moderate persistent asthma, 13 patients with severe persistent asthma, and 19 age and gender matched healthy controls. The HVEM mRNA expressions of all subjects were determined by real time PCR. Correlations between HVEM mRNA expression and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), pulmonary function test values, total blood white cell count and differential, total immunoglobulin E (IgE) level, and Asthma Control Test (ACT) score were analyzed, respectively. The discrimination abilities of HVEM mRNA between different groups were tested using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analyses.Results: This study showed the expressions of HVEM mRNA were significantly higher in the patients with severe and moderate persistent asthma than in patients with mild persistent asthma and healthy subjects (2.97 ± 1.23 vs. 1.17 ± 0.42 vs. 0.62 ± 0.38 vs. 0.46 ± 0.18/NAPDH, p < 0.001), but there was no significant difference between patients with mild persistent asthma and health controls (0.62 ± 0.38 vs. 0.46 ± 0.18/NAPDH, p = 0.557). HVEM mRNA expression at cut off point [1.01/NAPDH, area under the ROC curve (AUC) = 0.99] is sufficient to discriminate severe patients from mild-to-moderate patients, and at cut off point (0.93/NAPDH, AUC = 0.91) for discrimination of moderate-to-severe patients from mild ones, while at cut off point (0.76/NAPDH, AUC = 0.75) for discrimination of asthmatic patients from controls. Furthermore, HVEM mRNA expression was positively correlated with FeNO level (r = 0.524, p = 0.015), and total lymphocyte count (r = 0.426, p = 0.017) in patients with persistent asthma.Conclusions: HVEM gene expressions can be used as a potential biomarker for evaluating the severity of patients with persistent asthma.

Histone deacetylases 3 (HDAC3) modulates the acetylation state of histone and non-histone proteins and could be a powerful regulator of the inflammatory process in stroke. Inflammasome activation is a ubiquitous but poorly understood consequence of acute ischemic stroke. Here, we investigated the potential contributions of HDAC3 to inflammasome activation in primary cultured microglia and experimental stroke models. In this study, we documented that HDAC3 expression was increased in microglia of mouse experimental stroke model. Intraperitoneal injection of RGFP966 (a selective inhibitor of HDAC3) decreased infarct size and alleviated neurological deficits after the onset of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). In vitro data indicated that LPS stimulation evoked a time-dependent increase of HDAC3 and absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) inflammasome in primary cultured microglia. Interestingly, AIM2 was subjected to spatiotemporal regulation by RGFP966. The ability of RGFP966 to inhibit the AIM2 inflammasome was confirmed in an experimental mouse model of stroke. As expected, AIM2 knockout mice also demonstrated significant resistance to ischemia injury compared with their wild-type littermates. RGFP966 failed to exhibit extra protective effects in AIM2-/- stroke mice. Furthermore, we found that RGFP966 enhanced STAT1 acetylation and subsequently attenuated STAT1 phosphorylation, which may at least partially contributed to the negative regulation of AIM2 by RGFP966. Together, we initially found that RGFP966 alleviated the inflammatory response and protected against ischemic stroke by regulating the AIM2 inflammasome.

BACKGROUND: Dendritic cell-associated C-type lectin-1 (Dectin-1) receptor has been reported to be involved in neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease and traumatic brain injury. The present study was designed to investigate the role of Dectin-1 and its downstream target spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) in early brain injury after ischemic stroke using a focal cortex ischemic stroke model. METHODS: Adult male C57BL/6 J mice were subjected to a cerebral focal ischemia model of ischemic stroke. The neurological score, adhesive removal test, and foot-fault test were evaluated on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 after ischemic stroke. Dectin-1, Syk, phosphorylated (p)-Syk, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression was analyzed via western blotting in ischemic brain tissue after ischemic stroke and in BV2 microglial cells subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) injury in vitro. The brain infarct volume and Iba1-positive cells were evaluated using Nissl's and immunofluorescence staining, respectively. The Dectin-1 antagonist laminarin (LAM) and a selective inhibitor of Syk phosphorylation (piceatannol; PIC) were used for the intervention. RESULTS: Dectin-1, Syk, and p-Syk expression was significantly enhanced on days 3, 5, and 7 and peaked on day 3 after ischemic stroke. The Dectin-1 antagonist LAM or Syk inhibitor PIC decreased the number of Iba1-positive cells and TNF-α and iNOS expression, decreased the brain infarct volume, and improved neurological functions on day 3 after ischemic stroke. In addition, the in vitro data revealed that Dectin-1, Syk, and p-Syk expression was increased following the 3-h OGD and 0, 3, and 6 h of reperfusion in BV2 microglial cells. LAM and PIC also decreased TNF-α and iNOS expression 3 h after OGD/R induction. CONCLUSION: Dectin-1/Syk signaling plays a crucial role in inflammatory activation after ischemic stroke, and further investigation of Dectin-1/Syk signaling in stroke is warranted.

Previous studies have linked self-management with social support and family function. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying these relationships. This study aimed to explore the underlying relationships between social support (family function) and self-management and to examine whether well-being mediated these relationships in elderly patients with hypertension. A cross-sectional design was used to study 517 elderly patients with hypertension. Demographics, self-management behaviors, social support, family function and well-being were collected by questionnaires. Results showed that social support, family function and well-being were separately associated with self-management behaviors. When social support, family function and well-being were included in the regression model simultaneously, social support and family function were no longer the significant predictors of self-management, demonstrating mediation. Using bootstrapping approach, 89.9% of the relationship between social support and self-management was explained by well-being, and 66.3% of the relationship between family function and self-management was explained by well-being. Improving self-management in patients with hypertension should be a comprehensive approach which should take social support, family function and well-being into account. Health providers should realize the importance of focusing on the promotion of well-being, especially among elderly hypertensive patients with low social support and low family function.

Dispositional optimism reflects one's generalized positive expectancies for future outcomes and plays a crucial role in personal developmental outcomes and health (e.g., counteracting related mental disorders such as depression and anxiety). Increasing evidence has suggested that extraversion is an important personality factor contributing to dispositional optimism. However, less is known about the association between dispositional optimism and brain structure and the role of extraversion in this association. Here, we examined these issues in 231 healthy high school students aged 16 to 20 years (110 males, mean age = 18.48 years, SD = 0.54) by estimating regional gray matter density (rGMD) using a voxel-based morphometry method via structural magnetic resonance imaging. Whole-brain regression analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between dispositional optimism and the rGMD of the bilateral putamen after adjusting for age, sex, family socioeconomic status (SES), general intelligence, and total gray matter volume (TGMV). Moreover, prediction analyses using fourfold balanced cross-validation combined with linear regression confirmed a significant connection between dispositional optimism and putamen density after adjusting for age, sex, and family SES. More importantly, subsequent mediation analysis showed that extraversion may account for the association between putamen density and dispositional optimism after adjusting for age, sex, family SES, general intelligence, TGMV, and the other four Big Five personality traits. Taken together, the current study provides new evidence regarding the neurostructural basis underlying dispositional optimism in adolescents and underscores the importance of extraversion as an essential personality factor for dispositional optimism acquisition.

BACKGROUND: The hypertension control rate in China is much lower than that in developed countries. Self-management among elderly patients with hypertension can improve blood pressure control; thus, it is necessary to explore its association with individual and social environmental factors. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate self-management among elderly patients with hypertension in China and its association with individual and social environmental factors based on the social ecological model. METHODS: A total of 301 elderly patients with hypertension were recruited to do a questionnaire survey based on the social ecological model, which included the General Demographic Information Questionnaire, Hypertension Patients Self-Management Behavior Rating Scale, World Health Organization Well-Being Index, Family APGAR Index, and Social Support Rating Scale. RESULTS: The lowest level of self-management behaviors was in exercise management, and the highest was in medication management. The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that well-being, family function, sex, education level, and age were pivotal individual and social environmental factors influencing self-management behaviors among elderly patients with hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to develop and test interventions that improve self-management in elderly patients with hypertension. Specifically, individualized interventions to promote exercise among elderly persons with hypertension who are single and living alone are needed. Male patients with a lower education level, poor well-being, poor family function, and the lowest self-management levels are a key population to target.
