RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the differences and changes of blood flow status of splenic volume, common hepatic artery, splenic arteriovenous, inner diameter of portal vein and hepatic in patients with hypersplenism of different degrees using multi-slice spiral CT whole-liver perfusion model. Methods: 42 cases with hypersplenism of chronic hepatitis B with cirrhosis and 15 cases without hepatosplenic disease were collected as controls. All patients underwent multi-slice spiral CT whole-liver perfusion imaging. (1) The differences of spleen volume, common hepatic artery, splenic arteriovenous, and portal vein diameter between different degrees of hypersplenism and the control group were measured and compared. (2) The correlation between spleen volume and the inner diameter of each related vessels were analyzed and compared. (3) The values of perfusion parameters related to the five lobes of the liver in Couinaud segments based on hepatic artery perfusion (HAP), portal venous perfusion (PVP), total hepatic perfusion (TLP) and hepatic artery perfusion index (HPI) were measured and compared. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze the measurement data. The correlation between the spleen volume and the inner diameter of each blood vessel was analyzed by Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: (1) spleen volume and the inner diameter of splenic artery, splenic vein and portal vein in the cirrhotic hypersplenism group were significantly larger than control group, and the difference was statistically significant (F = 37.108, 17.484, 23.124, 13.636, P < 0.05). (2) spleen volume and the inner diameter of splenic artery, vein and portal vein in the moderate and severe hypersplenism groups were significantly larger than the mild hypersplenism group, and the difference was statistically significant (F = 25.418, 13.293, 15.136, 7.093, P < 0.05), but there was no statistically significant difference between the moderate and severe hypersplenism groups (P > 0.05). (3) The inner diameter of splenic vein, portal vein, and splenic artery was positively correlated with spleen volume (r = 0.680, 0.548, and 0.726). (4) PVP and TLP of the whole liver in hypersplenism group were lower than control group (P < 0.05), and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). HPI in the right posterior lobe of the liver in the moderate and severe hypersplenism group was higher than mild hypersplenism group (F = 3.555, 4.570, P < 0.05), and there was no significant difference in the HAP in the whole liver among the groups (P > 0.05), but the HAP in the whole liver in the severe hypersplenism group was lower than control, mild and moderate hypersplenism group. Conclusion: The inner diameter of the splenic arteriovenous in patients with hypersplenism of different degrees has widened to varying degrees, and is consistent with the increase in spleen volume, particularly in moderate and severe cases. Portal venous perfusion and total liver perfusion in patients with hypersplenism of different degrees have declined and the hepatic arterial perfusion in patients with severe hypersplenism is significantly reduced.

RESUMO

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a crucial regulator of calcium homeostasis and bone remodeling, and the parathyroid hormone 1 receptor (PTH1R) belongs to a class II G-protein-coupled receptor. PTH activates PTH1R, which mediates catabolic and anabolic processes in the skeleton. However, the functional mechanism of PTH1R has not been thoroughly elucidated in organisms. This study identified a 51 bp indel mutation in the first intron of the PTH1R gene and elucidated the effect of this gene mutation on the growth and carcass traits in chickens. The results indicated that the 51 bp indel was significantly associated with subcutaneous fat thickness, abdominal fat weight, body weight and daily gain over 4-8 weeks. Furthermore, we found that PTH1R gene expression was highest in the kidney and liver tissues, and it showed a trend of decreasing in leg and breast muscle tissues at different embryonic stages. In addition, we examined the expression of the three genotypes of the PTH1R gene in the liver, breast muscle and abdominal fat and found that the II genotype was significantly higher than the DD and ID genotypes. In summary, these findings suggest that the PTH1R gene can serve as a potential molecular marker for chicken breeding.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Chemotherapy resistance is a considerable obstacle to CRC treatment. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in the pathogenesis of many cancers. This study aimed to investigate the role and molecular basis of DEAD-box helicase 17 circRNA (circDDX17) in 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) sensitivity and CRC progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The levels of circDDX17, microRNA-31-5p (miR-31-5p) and kidney ankyrin repeat-containing protein 1 (KANK1) were detected by quantitative real-time PCR or western blot assay. Cell viability was assessed by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. Cell apoptosis rate was monitored by flow cytometry. Cell invasion capacity was evaluated by transwell assay. Western blot assay was conducted to measure the expression of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9) and E-cadherin. The interaction among circDDX17, miR-31-5p and KANK1 was indicated by bioinformatics analysis and dual-luciferase reporter assay. Xenograft assay was performed to analyze tumor growth and 5-Fu sensitivity in vivo. RESULTS: CircDDX17 and KANK1 were down-regulated, while miR-31-5p was upregulated in CRC tissues and cells. Upregulation of circDDX17 enhanced 5-Fu sensitivity and impeded CRC development. CircDDX17 inhibited 5-Fu resistance and CRC progression via sponging miR-31-5p. Besides, KANK1 depletion attenuated the effect of circDDX17 upregulation on chemosensitivity and CRC progression. CircDDX17 regulated KANK1 expression by binding to miR-31-5p. Moreover, circDDX17 overexpression blocked tumor growth and elevated 5-Fu sensitivity in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Upregulation of circDDX17 strengthened chemosensitivity of CRC to 5-Fu and blocked CRC progression by regulating miR-31-5p/KANK1 axis, which might provide an effective treatment strategy for CRC patients.

RESUMO

Microtia is a congenital malformation of the external ear that can be observed in many species including sheep. However, the genetic basis of microtia still remains unclear. Here, a GWAS was conducted to investigate the genetic basis underlying microtia. A total of 55 samples from 26 microtia and 29 normal animals were genotyped with Illumina OvineHD BeadChip. The strongest significant SNP was identified on OAR6, approximating the evolutionarily conserved region of the HMX1 gene, which is related to congenital malformations of the external ear in other species such as cattle and rats. Sequencing an evolutionarily conserved region surrounding HMX1 revealed a duplication of 76 bp, which is concordant with microtia, suggesting a dominant inheritance mode. Identification of this causal mutation in the HMX1 gene indicates the role of this particular gene in the development of the external ear and provides a genetic marker for selection against microtia.

RESUMO

Objective: To examine minimally invasive tricuspid valve operations applied in tricuspid valve insufficiency patients with previous left-sided valve surgery. Methods: Between September 2017 and June 2019, thirty-six consecutive patients received minimally invasive totally thoracoscopic tricuspid surgery through right thoracotomy at Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Fisrt Medical Center, People's Liberation Army General Hospital. There were 13 males and 23 females, aging (56±11) years (range: 43 to 79 years). All the patients had isolated significant tricuspid regurgitation after previous left-sided cardiac surgeries. A right anterolateral thoracotomy incision about 4 cm was made from the fourth intercostal space as main operating port. The arterial cannula was placed in femoral artery. The venous cannula was placed in femoral vein using Seldingger technique. Tricuspid valve operation was performed on beating heart by assist of vena vacuum. Results: Tricuspid valve repair was performed in 7 patients. Tricuspid valve replacement with bioprosthesis was performed in 29 patients. The operation time was (2.9±0.3) hours (range:2.5 to 3.6 hours). There was no conversion to sternotomy during operation. There was no severe complications during operation period. There were no complications related to this cannulation technique. The time of cardiopulmonary bypass establishment was (22±5) minutes (range: 12 to 24 minutes) and pump time was (82±16) minutes (range: 62 to 93 minutes). The length of hospital stay was (9±3) days after operation (range: 5 to 13 days). There was no early death in hospital. All patients were followed up for 3 to 22 months. No patient died. Conclusions: One single port-based minimally invasive approach seems to be safe, feasible, and reproducible in case of redo tricuspid valve operations. Only cannulation of inferior vena cava significantly simplified the complexity of isolated redo tricuspid surgery.

RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients in endometrial cancer with bone metastases. Methods: A retrospective review of medical records was performed to analyze patients with endometrial cancer who developed bone metastases at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) from January 2004 to December 2017, including patients with bone metastases at the diagnosis of endometrial cancer and at recurrence of endometrial cancer. The patient's clinicopathological features, bone metastasis characteristics, treatment process and prognoses were also analyzed. Results: The incidence of bone metastasis of endometrial cancer in PUMCH from 2004 to 2017 was 0.57% (14/2 458). (1) General clinical pathological features: the median age of the 7 patients with bone metastases diagnosed at the time of initial diagnosis was 50 years old, and the main pathological type was endometrioid carcinoma (n=5). The median age of the other 7 patients was 57 years old, with no significant difference comparing to the former groups (P=0.559). (2) The majority site of bone metastasis in endometrial cancer were discovered in pelvic bones, followed by the tibia. (3) Treatment: according to the staging of endometrial cancer, a comprehensive treatment based on surgery was performed, and one patient with isolated bone metastases underwent resection of bone metastasis. (4) Prognosis: nine out of the 14 patients died during the follow-up period. The median over all survival time was 25.5 months (range: 7.7-258.0 months). The median survival of population after diagnosis of bone metastases was 15.0 months (range: 3.0-51.0 months). The survival rate of endometrial cancer at 1-year after diagnosis of bone metastasis was 71.4%. The 2-year survival rate was 40.8%. (5) No independent prognostic factors affecting survival was found (P>0.05). Conclusions: The incidence of bone metastasis in endometrial cancer is less than 1%. Bone metastasis could occur at the diagnosis of endometrial cancer or recurrence of endometrial cancer. Bone metastasis suggests a poor prognosis. There is no standard follow-up and treatment protocols so that individualized treatment is needed.

RESUMO

To investigate the current status of postgraduates training in public health and preventive medicine in China. In this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted among directors of enrollment and teaching in 22 universities with postgraduate admission qualifications in corresponding disciplines nationwide. In 2016, full-time postgraduates were mainly academic masters. In addition to the graduate entrance examination, the common enrollment mode in colleges was to enroll a high qualified student with recommendations from relevant experts or institutions and an exemption from entrance examination (20/22). The emphasis on training contents between academic and public health master was different. Currently, the scale of public health postgraduate enrollment in public health and preventive medicine in China is stable, and the training program is reasonable, but there is an issue of monotonous model and uneven distribution of enrollment.

RESUMO

Glutaminyl-peptide cyclotransferase-like (QPCTL) is an isoenzyme of glutaminyl-peptide cyclotransferase (QPCT). QPCTL and QPCT catalyze the formation of N-terminal modified pyroglutamate-fractalkine and the chemokine CCL2. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between insertions/deletions in the chicken QPCTL promoter region with growth traits in chickens. We first detected two insertion/deletion variants of QPCTL via whole-genome resequencing analysis of DNA samples from Xichuan chickens. A total of 1896 individuals from 12 breeds were genotyped for 52- and 224-bp insertions/deletions. We found two novel insertions/deletions in the promoter region of the chicken QPCTL gene and studied their association with chicken body weight and carcass traits. Our findings show that QPCTL can be a molecular marker for chicken genetics and breeding programs.

RESUMO

In order to understand the status of the cultivation of the masters of public health (MPH) in colleges in China and improve the cultivation model, an electronic questionnaire survey were conducted among 22 schools of public health in colleges. The result showed that the size and the enrolment scale of Chinese MPH students were relatively small, and the training objectives were still unclear. There was no obvious difference between the curriculum setting for MPH and academic master degree. The practical skill-oriented courses and emergency response ability of public health practice were insufficient. The cultivation model of MPH should be improved in future.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the indication and midterm outcomes of surgical treatment of traumatic tricuspid insufficiency. Methods: Totally 19 patients with traumatic tricuspid insufficiency who underwent surgical treatment at Department of Cardiac Surgery, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2002 to January 2018 were included in this retrospective study. There were 12 male and 7 female patients, aged (43.1±12.9) years (range: 17-68 years). The main causes of traumatic tricuspid insufficiency included blunt chest trauma following high-speed vehicle accidents (17 patients) and high-fall trauma (2 patients). The preoperative New York Heart Association functional class was class Ⅱ in 5 patients, class Ⅲ in 12 patients, and class Ⅳ in 2 patients. The mechanism of tricuspid insufficiency included anterior chordal rupture in 9 patients, anterior papillary muscle rupture in 3 patients, anterior and posterior chordal or papillary muscle rupture in 4 patients, laceration of leaflet combined with chordal rupture in 2 patients and infection combined with anterior papillary muscle rupture in 1 patient. Anular dilation and enlargement of the right ventricle were observed in all the patients. Paired t test was used to evaluate the echocardiogratic results at preoperation, postoperation and follow-up. Independent sample rank sum test was used to evaluate the intervals between trauma and surgery in tricuspid valve repair group and tricuspid valve replacement group. Results: Tricuspid valve repair was successful in 8 patients, and 11 patients underwent valve replacement. Among the patients who underwent valve replacement, 6 patients received mechanical valve and 5 received bioprosthetic valve. The interval from trauma to surgery of the valve repair group and valve replacement group were 8.5(10.0) months (range: 0.1-13.0 months) and 72.0 (108.0) months (range: 2.0-228.0 months), respectively. Concomitant procedures included debridement in scalp trauma (1 patient), internal fixation of femoral fracture (1 patient). One patient died from liver failure 10 days after operation and the remaining patients survived. Eighteen patients were followed up for (94±50) months, 15 patients were in New York Heart Association functional class Ⅰ and 3 patients in class Ⅱ. One patient received redo-tricuspid valve replacement because of mechanical valve failure at the 11 years of follow-up. Conclusions: The midterm outcomes of surgical treatment of severe traumatic tricuspid insufficiency were satisfactory. Early diagnosis and surgical invention were recommended to achieve successful valve repair.

RESUMO

Objective: To summarize and analyze the clinical outcomes of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) patients receiving primary treatment at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from 1985 to 2015, and investigate the changes in treatment efficacy between the first and the second 15 years. Methods: Clinical data of GTN patient receiving primary chemotherapy at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 1985 to December 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. It further compared the therapeutic results and chemotherapy cycles given to GTN patients, according to International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO, 2000) prognostic score system, who were classified to different stages and low- or high-risk groups. Results: In total, 1 711 GTN patients were included in this study. Comparing the 1985-2000 group and the 2001-2015 group, the results showed that: (1) while the overall complete remission (CR) rate was 93.7% (1 603/1 711) , the CR rate of 2001-2015 group was significantly higher than that of 1985-2000 group [98.4% (1 155/1 174) vs 83.4% (448/537) , χ(2)=139.353, P<0.01]. This difference was significant between stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ patients, but nonexistent between stage Ⅰ and Ⅱ patients, including low- and high-risk groups. (2) The relapse rate of patients who had been in CR was 2.7% (43/1 603) , with no significant differences between the groups of 1985-2001 and 2001-2015 [3.6% (16/448) vs 2.3% (27/1 155) , χ(2)=6.867, P=0.142]. (3) The overall mortality rate was 2.6% (44/1 711) , which significantly decreased in 2001-2015 group compared to 1985-2000 group [1.6% (19/1 174) vs 4.7% (25/537) , χ(2)=13.830, P<0.01]. This difference appeared only in high-risk patients with stage Ⅲ disease (χ(2)=9.505, P<0.01) . (4) Fluorouracil was gradually replaced by floxridine in chemotherapy regimens. The total cycles of chemotherapy regimens given to low-risk patients with stage Ⅲ disease significantly decreased in 2001-2015 group, but no statistical difference was shown with patients at other stages. Moreover, the cycles of consolidation treatment were significantly reduced in patients with stage Ⅲ patients. Conclusions: GTN patients could obtain satisfactory curative results after appropriate and standard treatment. Peking Union Medical College Hospital has achieved better curative effect in the latest 15 years than before.

RESUMO

Objective: Using a questionnaire to evaluate different regimens of chemotherapy on ovarian function and quality of life of patients with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) . Methods: At least 6 months after completion of chemotherapy, 200 patients with GTN treated in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2010 to June 2017 were randomly selected to fill up the questionnaire. The questionnaire items were included the patient's menstrual cycles, sexual life, gestational issues and common health. The patients were divided into 3 groups by chemotherapy regimens: actinomycin D (Act-D) group, floxuridine+Act-D+vincristine (FAV) or floxuridine+Act-D+etoposide+vincristine (FAEV) group (FAV-FAEV group) , and etoposide+methotrexate+Act-D (EMA) /vincristine+cyclophosphamide (CO) or EMA/ etoposide+cisplatin (EP) group (EMA/CO-EMA/EP group) . Chi-square test was used with a significance level of P-value less than 0.05. Results: One hundred and seventy-three (86.5%,173/200) of the patients completed the questionnaire. Forty three point two percent (43.2%, 19/44) in the EMA/CO-EMA/EP group had a normal menstrual cycle, which were significantly lower than those of Act-D group (84.6%,22/26) and FAV-FAEV group (71.2%, 37/52; all P<0.05) . Amenorrhea rate was also significantly higher in EMA/CO-EMA/EP group (25.0%, 11/44) than in Act-D group (0) and FAV-FAEV group (17.3%, 9/52; all P<0.05) . The sexual life parameters were comparable among 3 groups. Ten out of thirty-two patients conceived after chemotherapy, 2 had miscarriages and 8 had full-term delivery of healthy babies. The common health and labor capacity were significantly decreased after chemotherapy (all P<0.05) . Conclusions: EMA/CO or EMA/EP regimen have a worse impact on ovarian function than Act-D and FAV or FAEV regimen. Gynecologic oncologist should be concerned about the ovarian function and quality of life of GTN patients.

RESUMO

Salmonid alphaviruses (SAV) severely infect farmed salmonids and rainbow trout. Owing to the recent increase in fish import trade, several SAV unreported countries, such as China, may face serious threat of this infection. Thus, it is necessary to develop efficient detection methods for the prevention and diagnosis of SAV infection. In this study, we selected a conserved segment of the SAV E1 protein as a target immunogen for the preparation of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific to SAV. A sensitive indirect immunofluorescence (IF) method was developed using 26E9C2 mAb that detected E1 protein and identified subtypes 1, 2 and 5 of SAV. Thus, this assay provides a sensitive and specific detection method, and an improved technical support for the clinical diagnosis and epidemiological study of SAV. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: In this study, we successfully prepared two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against three subtypes of salmonid alphavirus (SAV), and established an indirect immunofluorescence assay that can be used to diagnose and prevent SAV from entering SAV unreported countries, such as China, through international trade. RESUMO

The Andrias davidianus has been known as a traditional Chinese medicine for a long time. Its blood is considered as a waste or by-product of the meat production industry. Although there are reports on isolation of the antimicrobial peptides from different resources, there are no reports of their isolation from A. davidianus blood. In this work, an antimicrobial peptide, andricin B, was isolated from the blood of A. davidianus by an innovative method in which the magnetic liposome adsorption was combined with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The structure, antimicrobial activity and safety of andricin B were further investigated. Amino acid sequence was determined by N-terminal sequencing and found to be Gly-Leu-Thr-Arg-Leu-Phe-Ser-Val-Ile-Lys. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra and prediction of three-dimensional structure by bioinformatics software suggested the presence of a well-defined random coil conformation. Andricin B was found to be active against all bacteria tested in this study as well as some fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were in the range 8-64 µg ml-1 . Moreover, the haemolytic testing also suggested that andricin B could be considered safe at the MICs. Finally, andricin B was shown to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in the cooked meat of A. davidianus. This study shows that andricin B is a promising novel antimicrobial peptide that may provide further insights towards the development of new drugs. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the pioneer study on screening and isolation of antimicrobial peptide from the blood of Andrias davidianus. Here, we have developed a novel method by combining magnetic liposomes adsorption with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography to purify and screen the antimicrobial peptides. From this screen, we identified a novel antimicrobial peptide which we name as andricin B. Andricin B is unique as it checks the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as few fungal species.

RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the prevalence and related factors of HBV infection among people aged 18 years old and above in Mianyang city. Methods: A total of 260 950 residents, living in Mianyang city more than 6 months, aging 18 years old and above were employed by multi-stage random sampling method from November 2014 to September 2015. Questionnaire survey was conducted on participants using a self-designed questionnaire, including general demographic characteristics, family history of Hepatitis B, history of Hepatitis B vaccination and history of present illness, etc. 5ml blood was collected from all participants, and the blood samples were detected for HBsAg by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The multivariate unconditional logistic regression was performed to identify the related factors of positive HBsAg. Results: Among the 260 950 subjects, 113 184 were males (43.37%), 147 766 were females (56.63%), and the average age was (47.68±17.36) years old. The positive rate of HBsAg was 6.10%(15 822 cases). Subjects who were 25-34 years old (OR=1.23), 35-44 years old (OR=1.26), 45-54 years old (OR=1.23), and 55-64 years old (OR=1.34) were more likely to be HBsAg positive,65 years and older (OR=0.88) were less likely to be, compared with subjects aging 18-24 years old; males were more likely to be HBsAg positive compared with females (OR=1.35); people living in Fucheng district were more likely to be HBsAg positive compared with who living in Jiangyou district(OR=1.91); married people were more likely to be HBsAg positive compared with unmarried ones (OR=1.36); medical staff were less likely to be HBsAg positive compared with non-medical staff (OR=0.61); subjects with a surgery history were more likely to HBsAg positive compared with who without (OR=1.13); subjects with trauma history were more likely to HBsAg positive compared with who without (OR=1.13); people with history of Hepatitis B were more likely to HBsAg positive compared with who without (OR=4.21); people with Hepatitis B vaccination history were less likely to be HBsAg positive compared with who without (OR=0.48); all the P values above were less than 0.05. Conclusion: The positive rate of HBsAg among adults in Mianyang city was very high, and we should pay more attention to people aging between 25 and 64 years old, male, medical staff, with surgery history, trauma history, and a family history of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis B vaccination history.

RESUMO

We explore the effect of microbial activity stimulated by root exudates on the penetrometer resistance of soil and its elastic modulus. This is important because it is a measure of the mechanical strength of soil and it correlates closely with the rate of elongation of roots. A sandy soil was incubated with a synthetic root exudate at different temperatures, for different lengths of time and with selective suppression of either fungi or bacteria. The shape of the temperature response of penetrometer resistance in soil incubated with synthetic exudate was typical of a poikilothermic temperature response. Both penetrometer resistance and small strain shear modulus had maximum values between 25 and 30°C. At temperatures of 20°C and less, there was little effect of incubation with synthetic root exudate on the small strain shear modulus, although penetrometer resistance did increase with temperature over this range (4-20°C). This suggests that in this temperature range the increase in penetrometer resistance was related to a greater resistance to plastic deformation. At higher temperatures (> 25°C) penetrometer resistance decreased. Analysis of the DNA sequence data showed that at 25°C the number of Streptomyces (Gram-positive bacteria) increased, but selective suppression of either fungi or bacteria suggested that fungi have the greater role with respect to penetrometer resistance. HIGHLIGHTS: Effect of microbial activity stimulated by synthetic root exudates on the mechanical properties. We compared penetrometer measurements and estimates of elastic modulus with microbial community.Penetrometer resistance of soil showed a poikilothermic temperature response.Penetrometer resistance might be affected more by fungi than bacteria.

RESUMO

Objective: To discuss the effects of prophylactic chemotherapy on the outcomes and prognosis of invasive mole patients. Methods: One hundred and fifteen invasive mole (IM) patients older than 40 years were registered in Peking Union Medical Collage Hospital.Eleven of them were treated with prophylactic chemotherapy before diagnosed as IM prophylactic chemotherapy group, while the other 104 cases received therapeutic chemotherapy after diagnosed as IM (non-prophylactic chemotherapy group). The general clinical data (including age, clinical stage, risk factor score), treatment, outcomes and relapse of patients were retrospectively compared between two groups. Results: (1) The age of prophylactic chemotherapy group and non-prophylactic chemotherapy group were (47±5) versus (46±4) years old. Ratio of clinical stageⅠ-Ⅱ were 3/11 versus 29.8% (31/104), clinical stage Ⅲ-Ⅳ were 8/11 versus 70.2% (73/104). Ratio of risk factor score 0-6 were 11/11 versus 84.6% (88/104), risk factor score >6 were 0 versus 15.4% (16/104). There were no significant statistical differences between two groups in age, clinical stage or risk factor score (all P>0.05). (2) Treatment: the total chemotherapy courses between prophylactic chemotherapy group and non-prophylactic chemotherapy group (median 7 versus 5) were significantly different (Z=3.071,P=0.002). There were no significant statistical differences between two groups in the chemotherapy courses until negative conversion of ß-hCG, consolidation chemotherapy courses, total therapeutic chemotherapy courses or ratio of hysterectomy (all P>0.05). (3) Outcomes and relapse: between the prophylactic chemotherapy group and the non-prophylactic chemotherapy group, the complete remission rate were 11/11 versus 98.1%(102/104), the relapse rate were 0 versus 1.0%(1/102). There were no significant difference between the two groups in outcomes or relapse rate (P>0.05). Conclusions: Prophylactic chemotherapy does not substantially benefit the IM patients older than 40 years. Prophylactic chemotherapy may not significantly improve patients' prognosis, in which increased sample size is required in further study.
