BACKGROUND: The impact of sex-related differences in patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support (ECMO) support is still inconclusive. This population-based study aimed to investigate sex differences in short- or long-term outcomes in order to improve clinical practice. METHODS: Patients who received ECMO between 2001 to 2017 were identified from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Propensity score matching with a 1:1 ratio was conducted in female-to-male groups, to reduce confounding of baseline covariates. Outcomes included in-hospital mortality, all-cause mortality, all-cause readmission, and ECMO-related complications. Logistic regression analysis, Cox proportional hazard model, and join point regression were used to compare sex differences in both short- or long-term outcomes. RESULTS: In total, 7,010 matched patients from 11,734 ECMO receivers were included for analysis. The use of ECMO increased dramatically in past years, although the proportion of females was still lower than males. There was a decreasing trend of females undergoing ECMO over time. Female patients have lower risks of in-hospital mortality (64.08% in females vs 66.48% in males; P = 0.0352) and ECMO-related complications compared with males. Furthermore, females also had favorable long-term late outcomes such as all-cause mortality (73.35% in females vs 76.98% in males; P = 0.009) and readmission rate (6.99% in females vs 9.19% in males; P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Female patients had more favorable in-hospital and long-term survival outcomes. Despite improvement in modern ECMO technique and equipment, ECMO remains underutilized in eligible female patients. Thus, females should undergo ECMO treatment if available and indicated. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The institutional review board of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital approved all data usage and the study protocol (registration number: 202100151B0C502; date of registration: 23/08/2021).

AIM: We aimed to study the influence of sevoflurane on the nucleotide-binding domain and Leucine-rich repeat protein 3 (NLRP3) pathways in rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. METHODS: Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were equally divided into five groups randomly: sham-operated, cerebral I/R, sevoflurane (Sevo), NLRP3 inhibitor-treated (MCC950), and sevoflurane and NLRP3 inducer-treated groups. Rats' neurological functions were assessed using Longa scoring after 24 h of reperfusion, after which they were sacrificed, and cerebral infarction area was determined by triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining. Pathological changes in damaged portions were assessed using hematoxylin-eosin and Nissl staining, and cell apoptosis was detected by terminal-deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated nick end labeling staining. Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-18 (IL-18), malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in brain tissues were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were analyzed using a ROS assay kit. Protein levels of NLRP3, caspase-1, and IL-1ß were determined by western blot. RESULTS: Neurological function scores, cerebral infarction areas, and neuronal apoptosis index were decreased in the Sevo and MCC950 groups than in the I/R group. IL-1ß, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-18, NLRP3, caspase-1, and IL-1ß levels decreased in the Sevo and MCC950 groups (p < 0.05). ROS and MDA levels increased, but SOD levels increased in the Sevo and MCC950 groups than in the I/R group. NLPR3-inducer nigericin eliminated the protective effects of sevoflurane on cerebral I/R injury in rats. CONCLUSION: Sevoflurane could alleviate cerebral I/R-induced brain damage by inhibiting the ROS-NLRP3 pathway.

Early life stress such as maternal separation (MS), is a major risk factor for developing psychiatric disorders in adulthood. Connexin 43 (CX43), the main type of connexins expressed in astrocytes, has been indicated to participate in depression disorders. Nevertheless, the role of CX43 in MS-induced cognitive impairment and astrocyte dysfunction is unclear. Neonatal C57BL/6 mice were exposed to MS to mimic early life stress. Adeno-associated virus carrying CX43 was inoculated into mice for CX43 overexpression. Sucrose preference test, forced swim test and Morris water maze were performed for evaluating depression-like behaviors and spatial learning and memory of mice in adulthood. Real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was conducted to detect CX43 mRNA expression in mouse brain. Immunofluorescence staining and western blotting were used for measuring expression levels of astrocytic markers in murine hippocampal dentate gyrus. The results showed that overexpressing CX43 attenuated MS exposure-induced depression-like behaviors and decrease in spatial learning and memory in mice. Upregulating CX43 alleviated MS exposure-induced downregulation of astrocytic markers. Collectively, CX43 overexpression attenuates cognitive deficits and astrocyte dysfunction in mice exposed to MS.

There is scarce evidence about the surgeon learning curve of acute type A aortic dissection surgery and whether the optimal procedure number exists when training a cardiovascular surgeon. A total of 704 patients with acute type A aortic dissection surgery performed by 17 junior surgeons who can identify their first career surgery from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2018, are included. The surgeon experience volume is defined as the cumulative number of acute type A aortic dissection surgery of the surgeon since January 1, 2005. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. The possibility of non-linearity and cutoffs for surgeon experience volume level was explored using a restricted cubic spline model. The results revealed that more surgeon experience volume is significantly correlated to a lower in-hospital mortality rate (r = - 0.58, P = 0.010). The RCS model shows for an operator who reaches 25 cumulative volumes of acute type A aortic dissection surgery, the average in-hospital mortality rate of the patients can be below 10%. Furthermore, the longer duration from the 1st to 25th operations of the surgeon is significantly correlated to a higher average in-hospital mortality rate of the patients (r = 0.61, p = 0.045). Acute type A aortic dissection surgery has a prominent learning curve in terms of improving clinical outcomes. The findings suggest fostering high-volume surgeons at high-volume hospitals can achieve optimal clinical outcomes.

Background: Outbreaks of silicosis have occurred among workers in the artificial stone (AS) industry, and there is currently no effective antifibrosis treatment for silicosis. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 89 artificial stone-associated silicosis patients treated in Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital (China). Patients who agreed to be administered tetrandrine entered the observation group and those who disagreed entered the control group. Changes in chest HRCT, pulmonary function, and clinical symptoms of patients in two groups were compared pre- and post-treatment. Results: After treatment for 3-12 months, 56.5%-65.4% of patients in the observation group showed improvements in HRCT imaging, while there was no improvement in the control group (p < 0.05). Disease progression occurred in 0%-17.4% of patients in the observation group after 3-12 months of treatment compared with 44.4%-92.0% of patients in the control group (p < 0.05). After 3 months of treatment, the forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLco) in the observation group increased by 136.7 ± 189.2 mL (p < 0.05), 124.2 ± 169.9 mL (p < 0.05), and 1.4 ± 2.3 mL/min/mmHg (p > 0.05), respectively, while those in the control group decreased (145.8 ± 356.5; 107.5 ± 272.1; 1.9 ± 3.8). After 6 months of treatment, FVC, FEV1, and DLco in the observation group increased by 207.8 ± 372.2 mL (p > 0.05), 107.8 ± 295.2 mL (p > 0.05) and 0.7 ± 6.0 mL/min/mmHg (p > 0.05), respectively, while those of the control group decreased (383.3 ± 536.7; 215.6 ± 228.9; 1.4 ± 1.7). The incidences of clinical symptoms such as cough, expectoration, dyspnea, chest tightness, and chest pain in the observation group were decreased-after treatment (all p < 0.05), while the incidences of these symptoms increased in the control group, although the change was not statistically significant (all p > 0.05). Conclusion: Tetrandrine can control and delay the progression of AS-associated silicosis fibrosis, with improved chest HRCT imaging and pulmonary function.

The courtship ritual is a dynamic interplay between males and females. Courtship successfully leading to copulation is determined by the intention of both parties which is conveyed by complex action sequences. In Drosophila, the neural mechanisms controlling the female's willingness to mate, or sexual receptivity, have only recently become the focus of investigations. Here, we report that pre-mating sexual receptivity in females requires activity within a subset of serotonergic projection neurons (SPNs), which positively regulate courtship success. Of interest, a male-derived sex peptide, SP, which was transferred to females during copulation acted to inhibit the activity of SPN and suppressed receptivity. Downstream of 5-HT, subsets of 5-HT7 receptor neurons played critical roles in SP-induced suppression of sexual receptivity. Together, our study reveals a complex serotonin signaling system in the central brain of Drosophila which manages the female's desire to mate.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second deadliest cancer and the third-most common malignancy in the world. Surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy have been widely used to treat CRC, but some patients still develop resistance to these treatments. Ferroptosis is a novel non-apoptotic form of cell death. It is an iron-dependent non-apoptotic cell death characterized by the accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species and has been suggested to play a role in reversing resistance to anticancer drugs. This review summarizes recent advances in the prognostic role of ferroptosis in CRC and the mechanism of action in CRC.

Purpose: To quantify the impact of image noise on CT-based lung ventilation biomarkers calculated using Jacobian determinant techniques. Methods: Five mechanically ventilated swine were imaged on a multi-row CT scanner with acquisition parameters of 120 kVp and 0.6 mm slice thickness in static and 4-dimensional CT (4DCT) modes with respective pitches of 1 and 0.09. A range of tube current time product (mAs) values were used to vary image dose. On two dates, subjects received two 4DCTs: one with 10 mAs/rotation (low-dose, high-noise) and one with CT simulation standard of care 100 mAs/rotation (high-dose, low-noise). Additionally, 10 intermediate noise level breath-hold (BHCT) scans were acquired with inspiratory and expiratory lung volumes. Images were reconstructed with and without iterative reconstruction (IR) using 1 mm slice thickness. The Jacobian determinant of an estimated transformation from a B-spline deformable image registration was used to create CT-ventilation biomarkers estimating lung tissue expansion. 24 CT-ventilation maps were generated per subject per scan date: four 4DCT ventilation maps (two noise levels each with and without IR) and 20 BHCT ventilation maps (10 noise levels each with and without IR). Biomarkers derived from reduced dose scans were registered to the reference full dose scan for comparison. Evaluation metrics were gamma pass rate (Γ) with 2 mm distance-to-agreement and 6% intensity criterion, voxel-wise Spearman correlation (ρ) and Jacobian ratio coefficient of variation (CoV JR ). Results: Comparing biomarkers derived from low (CTDI vol = 6.07 mGy) and high (CTDI vol = 60.7 mGy) dose 4DCT scans, mean Γ, ρ and CoV JR values were 93% ± 3%, 0.88 ± 0.03 and 0.04 ± 0.009, respectively. With IR applied, those values were 93% ± 4%, 0.90 ± 0.04 and 0.03 ± 0.003. Similarly, comparisons between BHCT-based biomarkers with variable dose (CTDI vol = 1.35-7.95 mGy) had mean Γ, ρ and CoV JR of 93% ± 4%, 0.97 ± 0.02 and 0.03 ± 0.006 without IR and 93% ± 4%, 0.97 ± 0.03 and 0.03 ± 0.007 with IR. Applying IR did not significantly change any metrics (p > 0.05). Discussion: This work demonstrated that CT-ventilation, calculated using the Jacobian determinant of an estimated transformation from a B-spline deformable image registration, is invariant to Hounsfield Unit (HU) variation caused by image noise. This advantageous finding may be leveraged clinically with potential applications including dose reduction and/or acquiring repeated low-dose acquisitions for improved ventilation characterization.

Hard carbon is the most promising anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to its low cost and abundance, but its limited storage capacity remains a major challenge. Herein, edge coordination of metal single atoms is proved to be an effective strategy for promoting potassium storage in hard carbon for the first time, taking B, N co-doped hard carbon nanotubes anchored by edge Ni-N4 -B atomic sites (Ni@BNHC) as an example. It is revealed that edge Ni-N4 -B can provide active sites for interlayer adsorption of K+ and that Ni atoms can facilitate the reversibility of K+ storage on N and B atoms. Furthermore, an unprecedentedly reversible K+ storage capacity of 694 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1 is realized by introducing commercial carbon nanotubes. This work provides a new perspective for the application of single-atom engineering and the design of high-performance carbon anodes for PIBs.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolone use can be associated with an increased risk of aortic aneurysm (AA) or aortic dissection (AD). The US Food and Drug Administration recently warned against fluoroquinolone use for high-risk patients, such as those with Marfan syndrome. However, the association between fluoroquinolone use and AA/AD risk was unknown in these high-risk patients and therefore it was studied in this work.Methods and Results: Data were collected from a national database between 2000 and 2017 for 550 patients with AA/AD and any congenital aortic disease (mean age 41.5 years; 415 with Marfan syndrome). A case cross-over study was conducted to compare the risk of aortic events (AA/AD) associated with fluoroquinolone and amoxicillin use between the hazard period (from -60 days to -1 day) and a randomly selected reference period (-180 to -121 days; -240 to -181 days; and -300 to -241 days). Compared to the reference period without fluoroquinolone use, fluoroquinolone use during the hazard period was not associated with a greater risk of AA/AD (1.09% vs. 1.09%; odds ratio [OR] 1.000; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.32-3.10), AA (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.11-3.99), or AD (OR 1.33; 95% CI 0.30-5.96) in patients with congenital aortic disease or Marfan syndrome. This lack of association was maintained in subgroup analysis, including Marfan syndrome or not, age (≤50 vs. >50 years) and sex. CONCLUSIONS: Fluoroquinolone use was not associated with an increased risk of AA/AD in patients with congenital aortic disease, including Marfan syndrome. More evidence is required for a fluoroquinolone pharmacovigilance plan in these patients.

Transient receptor potential canonical 7 (TRPC7) has been reported to mediate aging-associated tumorigenesis, but the role of TRPC7 in cancer malignancy is still unclear. TRPC7 is associated with tumor size in patients with lung adenocarcinoma and the present study further evaluated the underlying mechanism of TRPC7 in the regulation of cancer progression. The clinicopathological role of TRPC7 was assessed using immunohistochemistry staining and the pathological mechanism of TRPC7 in lung adenocarcinoma cells was determined using cell cycle examination, invasion and calcium response assays, and immunoblot analysis. The results indicated that high TRPC7 expression was associated with a lower 5-year survival rate compared with low TRPC7 expression, which suggested that TRPC7 expression was inversely associated with overall survival in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. TRPC7 serves a pathological role by facilitating the enhancement of cell growth and migration with increased phosphorylation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II, AKT and ERK. TRPC7 knockdown in lung adenocarcinoma cells restrained cell cycle progression and cell migration by interrupting the TRPC7-mediated Ca2+ signaling-dependent AKT and MAPK signaling pathways. These findings demonstrated for the first time a role of oncogenic TRPC7 in the regulation of cancer malignancy and could provide a novel therapeutic molecular target for patients with lung adenocarcinoma.

Introduction: Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), also known as Steven Johnson syndrome (SJS), is a devastating disease. Patients develop blindness and symblepharon despite multiple reconstructive surgeries. We report a case of SJS/TEN with ocular involvement where treatment with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) resulted in a significant improvement in the visual acuity after surgery. Case presentation: A woman with SJS/TEN with severe ocular complication (SOC) had limbal stem cell deficiency and symblepharon of the superior and inferior fornix. Pannus grew over her cornea, reducing the vision to counting finger. The symblepharon produced shortening of the fornix, causing entropion. The in-turned eyelid caused her eyelashes to rub against the cornea, causing great damage to the ocular surface. Limbal stem cell deficiency led to the loss of normal corneal morphology and invasion of the pannus onto the central visual axis, resulting in poor vision. She experienced ocular inflammation for 3 months before transfer to our hospital for admission. Ophthalmic examination showed bilateral corneal opacity with conjunctivalization, and inferior and superior fornix shortening. Symblepharon-lysis with amniotic membrane transplantation was attempted but the outcome was poor, with recurrence of superior scaring and symblepharon. She finally underwent major reconstructive surgery with allogeneic limbal stem cell transplantation with her sister as the donor, autologous minor salivary gland transplantation, and oral buccal mucosa flap transplant. HBOT was given daily post-surgery for supporting the grafts and suppressing inflammation. After 17 HBOT sessions and 3 months of autoserum drops, her left eye vision increased from the initial counting finger to 0.4 due to the successful growth of the corneal epithelium from the donor corneal limbal cell line. When a scleral contact lens which vaulted over the corneal limbal area was fitted, her vision improved to 0.8 due to redressal of high order aberration and astigmatism from the cornea scar. Conclusion: After major reconstruction of the ocular surface with multiple cell type transplants, including limbal stem cells, minor salivary gland acinar cells, and oral mucosa cells, HBOT proved useful in supporting the graft uptake and oxygenation of the donor tissues, enabling fast recovery of the grafts and cell functioning, with eventual return of the working vision of the patient.

The cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides towards cyclic carbonates provides a promising pathway for CO2 utilization. Given the crucial role of epoxide ring opening in determining the reaction rate, designing catalysts with rich active sites for boosting epoxide adsorption and C-O bond cleavage is necessary for gaining efficient cyclic carbonate generation. Herein, by taking two-dimensional FeOCl as a model, we propose the construction of electron-donor and -acceptor units within a confined region via vacancy-cluster engineering to boost epoxide ring opening. By combing theoretical simulations and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy, we show that the introduction of Fe-Cl vacancy clusters can activate the inert halogen-terminated surface and provide reactive sites containing electron-donor and -acceptor units, leading to strengthened epoxide adsorption and promoted C-O bond cleavage. Benefiting from these, FeOCl nanosheets with Fe-Cl vacancy clusters exhibit enhanced cyclic carbonate generation from CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides.

BACKGROUND: RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), which form complexes or single/multiple RNA-binding domains, have a functional role in regulating and determining the function or stability of the bound RNAs in various cancers, including breast invasive carcinoma (BRCA). However, the biological functions and clinical implications of RBP-related long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in BRCA remain largely unknown. METHODS: Herein, we first identified and characterized RBP-related lncRNAs in BRCA. Then we built an RBP-related lncRNA signature (RBPLSig) and explored the clinical evaluation and prediction performance of the RBPLSig by bioinformatic analysis. In addition, to optimize treatment plans, prediction online tools was developed to predict the patient survival rate. Lastly, to verify the function of lncRNA WAC antisense RNA 1 (WAC-AS1), the experiments such as Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), lncRNA knockdown, CCK-8, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) staining were performed. We also gained the potential mechanisms of the druggable compounds of the WAC-AS1 related RBP gene, putative NSUN6, using molecular docking. RESULTS: The results showed that RBPLSig, as an independent prognostic factor for BRCA patients, was involved in numerous malignancy-associated immunoregulatory pathways. We found different immune statuses and responses to immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy between the high- and low-risk groups stratified by RBPLSig. CONCLUSIONS: Our data broaden the comprehensive understanding of the biological functions of RBP-related lncRNAs, and demonstrate a novel and independent RBPLSig to assess prognosis and the immune microenvironment, thus helping to guide treatment decisions for BRCA.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrythmia and causes many complications. Sinus rhythm restoration could reduce late mortality of atrial fibrillation patients. The Maze procedure is the gold standard for surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation. Higher surgical volume has been documented with favorable outcomes of various cardiac procedures such as mitral valve surgery and aortic valve replacement. We aimed to determine the volume-outcome relationship (i.e., association between surgical volume and outcomes) for the concomitant Maze procedure during major cardiac surgeries. METHODS: This nationwide population-based cohort study retrieved data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Adult patients undergoing concomitant Maze procedures during 2010-2017 were identified; consequently, 2666 patients were classified into four subgroups based on hospital cumulative surgery volumes. In-hospital outcomes and late outcomes during follow-up were analyzed. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards model were used to analyze the volume-outcome relationship. RESULTS: Patients undergoing Maze procedures at lower-volume hospitals tended to be frailer and had higher comorbidity scores. Patients in the highest-volume hospitals had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality than those in the lowest-volume hospitals [adjusted odds ratio, 0.30; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.15-0.61; P < 0.001]. Patients in the highest-volume hospitals had lower rates of late mortality than those in the lowest-volume hospitals, including all-cause mortality [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 0.53; 95% CI 0.40-0.68; P < 0.001] and all-cause mortality after discharge (aHR 0.60; 95% CI 0.44-0.80; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: A positive hospital volume-outcome relationship for concomitant Maze procedures was demonstrated for in-hospital and late follow-up mortality. The consequence may be attributed to physician skill/experience, experienced multidisciplinary teams, and comprehensive care processes. We suggest referring patients with frailty or those requiring complicated cardiac surgeries to high-volume hospitals to improve clinical outcomes. Ovarian cancer is a lethal gynecological cancer because drug resistance often results in treatment failure. The CHK2, a tumor suppressor, is considered to be an important molecular target in ovarian cancer due to its role in DNA repair. Dysfunctional CHK2 impairs DNA damage-induced checkpoints, reduces apoptosis, and confers resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation therapy in ovarian cancer cells. This provides a basis for finding new effective agents targeting CHK2 upregulation or activation to treat or prevent the progression of advanced ovarian cancer. Here, the results show that baicalein (5,6,7-trihydroxyflavone) treatment inhibits the growth of highly invasive ovarian cancer cells, and that baicalein-induced growth inhibition is mediated by the cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase. Baicalein-induced G2/M phase arrest is associated with an increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, DNA damage, and CHK2 upregulation and activation. Thus, baicalein modulates the expression of DNA damage response proteins and G2/M phase regulatory molecules. Blockade of CHK2 activation by CHK2 inhibitors protects cells from baicalein-mediated G2/M cell cycle arrest. All the results suggest that baicalein has another novel growth inhibitory effect on highly invasive ovarian cancer cells, which is partly related to G2/M cell cycle arrest through the ROS-mediated DNA breakage damage and CHK2 activation. Collectively, our findings provide a molecular basis for the potential of baicalein as an adjuvant therapeutic agent in the treatment of metastatic ovarian cancer.

In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination in controlling the infectivity and mortality of the SARS-CoV-2. Two major variants Delta and Omicron are investigated respectively. The main method used in the research is the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA). We use Δ α as the evaluation of control effectiveness. In the transmission stages of Delta and Omicron, we observe whether Δ α shows a downward trend by gradually expanding the length of time series. Vaccine effectiveness is evaluated using a time series of newly diagnosed patients and newly reported deaths. Data samples are taken from 9 different countries. According to the obtained results, the vaccine controls infectivity and mortality of the virus in the Delta transmission stage, but infectivity control is less effective than mortality. In the Omicron transmission stage, the immune effect of the vaccine is not obvious, which may be related to the high infectivity of Omicron. However, the vaccine is still effective in controlling mortality. We also find that the immune effect of vaccine on Omicron was lower than that of Delta. Finally, we observe that the immune effect of the vaccine in 'Poland' was abnormal. By analyzing the vaccination curve, we conclude that in 'Poland', when the growth rate of vaccination rate slowed down, the immune effect of the vaccine was very poor in terms of pathogenicity and lethality. Therefore, we suggest that all countries should continue to strengthen the vaccination rate. A higher or faster growth rate of vaccination rate will help control the infectivity and mortality rate, especially in the effectiveness of controlling mortality. Our research can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of vaccines for epidemic prevention and control, the formulation of epidemic prevention measures and vaccination policies for different countries with respect to their current pandemic situation accordingly.

The zero-magnetic-field nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) refers to the second-order transverse current induced by an applied alternating electric field; it indicates the topological properties of inversion-symmetry-breaking crystals. Despite several studies on the NLHE induced by the Berry-curvature dipole in Weyl semimetals, the direct current conversion by rectification is limited to very low driving frequencies and cryogenic temperatures. The nonlinear photoresponse generated by the NLHE at room temperature can be useful for numerous applications in communication, sensing, and photodetection across a high bandwidth. In this study, observations of the second-order NLHE in type-II Dirac semimetal CoTe2 under time-reversal symmetry are reported. This is determined by the disorder-induced extrinsic contribution on the broken-inversion-symmetry surface and room-temperature terahertz rectification without the need for semiconductor junctions or bias voltage. It is shown that remarkable photoresponsivity over 0.1 A W-1 , a response time of approximately 710 ns, and a mean noise equivalent power of 1 pW Hz-1/2 can be achieved at room temperature. The results open a new pathway for low-energy photon harvesting via nonlinear rectification induced by the NLHE in strongly spin-orbit-coupled and inversion-symmetry-breaking systems, promising a considerable impact in the field of infrared/terahertz photonics.
