RESUMO

Constructing a p-n heterojunction is a feasible strategy to manipulate the dynamic behaviors of photogenerated carriers through an internal electric field. Herein, a novel highly efficient indium oxide/bismuth oxyiodide (In2O3/BiOI) p-n junction photocatalyst was fabricated using a facile ionic liquid-assisted precipitation method for the first time. The morphologies were modified by adding different amounts of acetic acid solution. Their hierarchical architecture was beneficial for adsorbing contaminants in wastewater, while the in-situ formed p-n heterojunction between BiOI and In2O3 facilitated interfacial charge transfer and improved the quantum efficiency. Their visible light-responsive photocatalytic activities were systematically investigated by photocatalytic o-phenylphenol (OPP) and 4-tert-butylphenol (PTBP) oxidation. The degradation rate of OPP over In2O3/BiOI-2 was up to 5.67 times higher than that for BiOI. The excellent activity of In2O3/BiOI should be attributed to the rapid interfacial charge transfer, depressed carrier recombination, and proper band potentials. Trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance characterizations confirmed the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O2-), which have played a key role in decomposing pollutants. The intermediate products generated during the photocatalytic degradation of OPP were detected and identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Meanwhile, their possible molecular structures and degradation pathways have also been inferred.

Study Objectives: Previous literature supports that insomnia is predictive of subsequent psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) in the general population. However, there is a lack of empirical data on the reverse causality between the two variables and on the correlation between the symptom severity of insomnia and PLEs. This study aimed to explore the bidirectional associations between insomnia and PLEs before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A total of 938 students aged 14-25 years completed both waves of the survey before and during the pandemic (the first wave: October 2019 to November 2019; the second wave: April 2020 to May 2020). PLEs were assessed using the 15-item positive subscale of the community assessment of psychic experiences (CAPE-P15), and insomnia was assessed using three questions on difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, and early morning awakening. Results: Students with baseline insomnia were more likely to exhibit new-onset PLEs during the pandemic (OR: 5.13, 95% CI: 2.54-10.38), while no significant predictive effect of insomnia was found for the persistence and severity of PLEs. Meanwhile, baseline PLEs not only predicted the presence of insomnia during the pandemic (OR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.25-3.65) but also correlated with its severity (B: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.47-1.31). Conclusion: The study provides the first piece of evidence for the bidirectional association between insomnia and PLEs in the general population. However, although insomnia has an important predictive role in the occurrence of PLEs, it does not predict the persistence and development of PLEs, suggesting that there is a more complex mechanism underlying the process.

The bis-benzodioxole-fibrate hybrids were designed by structural simplification and bioisostere principle. Lipids lowering activity was preliminarily screened by Triton WR 1339 induced hyperlipidemia mice model, in which T3 showed the best hypolipidemia, decreasing plasma triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC), which were better than sesamin and fenofibrate (FF). T3 was also found to significantly reduce TG, TC and low density lipoprotein cholesterin (LDL-C) both in plasma and liver tissue of high fat diet (HFD) induced hyperlipidemic mice. In addition, T3 showed hepatoprotective activity, which the noteworthy amelioration in liver aminotransferases (AST and ALT) was evaluated and the histopathological observation exhibited that T3 inhibited lipids accumulation in the hepatic and alleviated liver damage. The expression of PPAR-α receptor involved lipids metabolism in liver tissue significantly increased after T3 supplementation. Other potent activity, such as antioxidation and anti-inflammation, was also observed. The molecular docking study revealed that T3 has good affinity activity toward to the active site of PPAR-α receptor. Based on these findings, T3 may serve as an effective hypolipidemic agent with hepatoprotection.

The maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT) is a major developmental transition in the life cycles of animals. It consists of two associated processes: maternal transcript clearance and zygotic genome activation (ZGA). The concept of MZT has been controversially discussed in plants. In this short review, we summarize recent advances in understanding the timing of ZGA and the similarities and differences between ZGA in eudicots and monocots. We discuss the parental contributions to the transcriptome of the proembryo and parental control of early embryogenesis, and we examine distinct differences in the ZGA between animals and plants, update relevant concepts on MZT, and highlight outstanding questions in this field.

BACKGROUND: Oncomelania hupensis hupensis is the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, the causative agent of schistosomiasis in China and is therefore of significant medical and veterinary health importance. Although tremendous progress has been achieved, there remains an understudied area of approximately 2.06 billion m2 of potential snail habitats. This area could be further increased by annual flooding. Therefore, an understanding of population genetics of snails in these areas may be useful for future monitoring and control activities. METHODS AND RESULTS: We sampled snails from Hexian (HX), Zongyang (ZY) and Shitai (ST) in Anhui (schistosomiasis transmission control), and from Hengtang (HT), Taicang (TC), Dongsan (DS) and Xisan (XS) in Jiangsu (schistosomiasis transmission interrupted), downstream of Anhui. ST, DS and XS are classified as hilly and mountainous areas, and HX, ZY, TC and HT as lake and marshland areas. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene were sequenced. Out of 115 snails analyzed, 29 haplotypes were identified. We observed 56 (8.72%) polymorphic sites consisting of 51 transitions, four transversions and one multiple mutational change. The overall haplotype and nucleotide diversity were 0.899 and 0.01569, respectively. Snail populations in Anhui had higher genetic diversity than in Jiangsu. 73.32% of total variation was distributed among sites and 26.68% within sites. Snails were significantly separated according to eco-epidemiological settings in both network and phylogenetic analyses. CONCLUSION: Our results could provide important guidance towards assessing coevolutionary interactions of snails with S. japonicum, as well as for future molluscan host monitoring and control activities.

BACKGROUND: The Partners at Care Transitions Measure (PACT-M) is a measure that assesses the quality and safety of care during the transition from hospital to home from the patient's perspective. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the PACT-M in Mainland China. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. A convenience sample of patients was recruited from three tertiary hospitals affiliated with Zhengzhou University, China. A total of 402 participants were interviewed before discharge, and 306 participants were interviewed one month after discharge from hospital to home using the Chinese version of the PACT-M. The statistical methods used in this study include the critical ratio value, item total correlation, test-retest, Cronbach's alpha, confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis. RESULTS: The Chinese version of the PACT-M consists of PACT-M1 and PACT-M2, both of which have two dimensions, the number of items in both parts are consistent with the original English language version. The Cronbach's alpha values of the PACT-M1 and PACT-M2 were 0.802 and 0.741, and the test-retest reliability values were 0.885 and 0.837. The item content validity index and scale content validity index values of the PACT-M1 and PACT-M2 were all 1.0. CONCLUSION: The Chinese version of the PACT-M shows acceptable validity and reliability and can be used to assess the quality and safety of transitional care from hospital to home from the patient's perspective in mainland China.

Introduction: It has been reported that sex has well-established relationships with the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and the major adverse cardiovascular events. Compared with men, the difference of coronary artery and myocardial characteristics in women has effects on anatomical and functional evaluations. Quantitative flow ratio (QFR) has been shown to be effective in assessing the hemodynamic relevance of lesions in stable coronary disease. However, its suitability in acute myocardial infarction patients is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the sex differences in the non-infarct-related artery (NIRA)-based QFR in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Methods: In this study, 353 patients with STEMI who underwent angiographic cQFR assessment and interventional therapy were included. According to contrast-flow QFR (cQFR) standard operating procedures: reliable software was used to modeling the hyperemic flow velocity derived from coronary angiography in the absence of pharmacologically induced hyperemia. 353 patients were divided into two groups according to sex. A cQFR ≤0.80 was considered hemodynamically significant, whereas invasive coronary angiography (ICA) luminal stenosis ≥50% was considered obstructive. Demographics, clinical data, NIRA-related anatomy, and functional cQFR values were recorded. Clinical outcomes included the NIRA reclassification rate between men and women, according to the ICA and cQFR assessments. Results: Women were older and had a higher body mass index (BMI) than men. The levels of diastolic blood pressure, troponin I, peak creatine kinase-MB, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, N terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide, stent diameter, and current smoking rate were found to be significantly lower in the female group than in the male group. Women had a lower likelihood of a positive cQFR ≤0.80 for the same degree of stenosis and a lower rate of NIRA revascularization. Independent predictors of positive cQFR included male sex and diameter stenosis (DS) >70%. Conclusions: cQFR values differ between the sexes, as women have a higher cQFR value for the same degree of stenosis. The findings suggest that QFR variations by sex require specific interpretation, as these differences may affect therapeutic decision-making and clinical outcomes.

Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) is one of the most important ornamental plants. Its color is mainly determined by the middle tepals. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the intriguing flower color development among different wintersweet groups are still largely unknown. In addition, wintersweet belongs to magnoliids, and the phylogenetic position of magnoliids remains to be determined conclusively. Here, the whole genome of red flower wintersweet, a new wintersweet type, was sequenced and assembled with high quality. The genome comprised 11 super-scaffolds (chromosomes) with a total size of 737.03 Mb. Based on the analyses of the long branch attraction, incomplete lineage sorting, sparse taxon sampling, and other factors, we suggest that a bifurcating tree may not fully represent the complex early diversification of the angiosperms and that magnoliids are most likely sister to the eudicots. The wintersweet genome appears to have undergone two whole-genome duplication (WGD) events: a recent WGD event representing an independent event specific to the Calycanthaceae and an ancient WGD event shared by Laurales. By integrating genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic data, CpANS1 and the transcription factor CpMYB1 were found to play key roles in regulating tepal color development, whereas CpMYB1 needs to form a complex with bHLH and WD40 to fully perform its regulatory function. The present study not only provides novel insights into the evolution of magnoliids and the molecular mechanism for flower color development, but also lays the foundation for subsequent functional genomics study and molecular breeding of wintersweet.

Human trophoblast cell surface antigen 2 (TROP-2) is an important target of tumor therapy, and antibody-drug conjugates with sacituzumab targeting TROP-2 have been approved for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer. Here, we report the crystal structures of TROP-2-ECD, which can be either cis- or trans-dimers depending on which distinct but overlapping interfaces is used to engage with monomers. The cis- or trans-tetrameric forms of TROP-2 can also be assembled with a non-overlapping interface with either cis- or trans-dimerization, suggesting that cis- and trans-dimers cluster on the cell surface. The binding site of sacituzumab on TROP-2 is mapped to be located on a stretched polypeptide in CPD (Q237-Q252), which is not involved in either cis- or trans-interactions. The present findings will improve understanding of the molecular assembly of TROP-2 on tumor cells and shed light on future design of biologics for tumor therapy.

Plexiform cellular schwannoma (PCS) is very rare, and it is not completely understood. We present our experience with 7 additional cases of PCS in infancy and childhood to further characterize its distinctive clinicopathological features. There were 5 females and 2 males with a mean age of 28 months (ranging, 2 months to 8 years). The involved sites included the left forearm (n = 2), sacrococcygeal region (n = 2), retroperitoneum (n = 1), thoracic spinal canal and thoracic cavity (n = 1), and neck (n = 1). Tumor sizes ranged from 3 to 13 cm in maximum diameter (mean, 7.1 cm). Histologically, all tumors consisted of abundant spindle cells arranged in a multinodular or plexiform growth pattern, possessing elongated, hyperchromatic nuclei and pale eosinophilic cytoplasm with indistinct cell margins. Mitotic figures were easily identified, with a mean count of 4 per 10 consecutive high power fields (HPF). Immunohistochemically, all tumors were strongly and diffusely positive for S100 protein, SOX10 and H3K27me3. The Ki-67 index ranged from 5% to 30% (mean, 15%). Follow-up (available in 6 cases) revealed that 5 patients experienced local recurrence and were treated by re-excision. There was no evidence of recurrence and metastasis in 3 patients, and the other 2 were alive with the disease. In conclusion, PCS is an uncommon nerve sheath tumor predominantly occurring in infants and children, featuring a plexiform or multinodular growth pattern and exhibiting a tendency toward local recurrence. PCS is easily mistaken as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) due to its locally aggressive behaviors and worrisome features, including hypercellularity, hyperchromatism and high proliferative activity. Increased awareness of its potential occurrence and greater familiarity with its characteristic features are helpful for both clinicians and pathologists to avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary overtreatment.

The development of simple, efficient, and biocompatible organic luminescent molecules is of great significance to the clinical transformation of biomaterials. In recent years, purely organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with an extremely small single-triplet energy gap (ΔEST ) have been considered as the most promising new-generation electroluminescence emitters, which is an enormous breakthrough in organic optoelectronics. By merits of the unique photophysical properties, high structure flexibility, and reduced health risks, such metal-free TADF luminophores have attracted tremendous attention in biomedical fields, including conventional fluorescence imaging, time-resolved imaging and sensing, and photodynamic therapy. However, there is currently no systematic summary of the TADF materials for biomedical applications, which is presented in this review. Besides a brief introduction of the major developments of TADF material, the typical TADF mechanisms and fundamental principles on design strategies of TADF molecules and nanomaterials are subsequently described. Importantly, a specific emphasis is placed on the discussion of TADF materials for various biomedical applications. Finally, the authors make a forecast of the remaining challenges and future developments. This review provides insightful perspectives and clear prospects towards the rapid development of TADF materials in biomedicine, which will be highly valuable to exploit new luminescent materials.

A novel 0D organic-inorganic metal halide hybrid (C13H16N2O2)2InCl6·Cl (1) has been obtained by integrating the mono-viologen derivative with InCl3. Compound 1 exhibits reversible and ultrafast UV/sunlight/X-ray induced photochromic properties, as well as excellent electrochromic performance, which is the first example of an indium-based organic-inorganic chromic hybrid.

In this study, we performed a study on 106 children with epilepsy who were treated with sodium valproate (the VPA group, n = 37), oxcarbazepine (the OXC group, n = 34), or levetiracetam (the LEV group, n = 35). In addition, the clinical data of epileptic children who were newly diagnosed in the same period without antiepileptic drug (AED) treatment (the untreated group, n = 35) and normal children who received physical examination in our hospital (the healthy group, n = 35) were selected as controls. We analyzed the efficacy and safety of different AEDs, used blood ammonia and homocysteine levels as the observation indicators, and calculated the incidence of hyperammonemia (VAH) and hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) treated with different AEDs. And, based on the effect of epilepsy status on the cognitive function of patients, we also analyzed the effect of different AED treatments on children's cognitive function. Our results show that sodium valproate, oxcarbazepine, and levetiracetam are all effective in the treatment of children with epilepsy and can be used as the first-line choice of antiepileptic treatment for children with epilepsy. However, compared with sodium valproate, levetiracetam and oxcarbazepine have a lower incidence of adverse drug reactions and do not cause an increase in blood ammonia and Hcy levels, so they have higher safety of drug treatment. In addition, compared with sodium valproate, levetiracetam and oxcarbazepine have better recovery of cognitive function in children with epilepsy and so they have better application value.

A fearful face as second visual target (T2) was detected better than a neutral T2 in a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) task. The advantage of fear over neutral emotion was originally attributed to a limited-capacity mechanism, in which fearful stimuli are prioritized for attention over neutral stimuli. However, more recent studies have shown that the prioritization of the processing of fear is strongly dependent on the emotional task relevance. Combining the RSVP task and Garner's paradigm, by varying the expression (fearful and neutral faces) and the emotional task relevance of the T2 (relevance: emotion classification task; irrelevance: gender classification task), this study aims to investigate the role of emotional task relevance on the advantage of fear during an RSVP task in which participants have to identify two visual targets in a stream of distractors. The behavioral results revealed that there was no significant effect of the expression on the task performance in the gender classification task. Fearful faces were easier to detect than neutral faces, but the T2 accuracy of fearful faces was lower than that of neutral faces in the emotion classification task. Furthermore, we found that the vertex positive potential and P100 components were enhanced for fearful faces compared to neutral faces independent of the emotional task relevance. For the P300 component, there was no significant difference in the gender classification task, but fearful faces elicited enhanced P300 amplitudes compared to neutral faces in the emotion classification task. These results indicated that the early processing of fear is automatic, while the late processing of fear is dependent on the emotional task relevance under limited attentional resources.

The misuse of both antibiotics and plastics significantly increases the environmental pollution problems associated with these contaminants. Moreover, microplastics can adsorb other pollutants in the environment. However, the mechanisms of antibiotic adsorption by degradable and nondegradable microplastics are not completely understood. In this study, we investigated the environmental behavior of norfloxacin (NOR) using polybutylene succinate (PBS), which is a degradable microplastic, and compared it with conventional microplastics, polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE). The order of adsorption capacity was PS > PBS â‰« PE. The adsorption behavior fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating monolayer adsorption. The process is thermodynamically endothermic and non-spontaneous and is controlled by chemical and physical mechanisms, including π-π conjugation, hydrogen bonds, ion exchange, and electrostatic interactions. The adsorption capacity of microplastics was higher when the solution pH was around the pKa value of NOR than at other pH values. Ionic strength and dissolved organic matter inhibited the adsorption process. For PS and PBS, the amount of NOR adsorbed onto MPs initially decreased and then increased with the increase of coexisting heavy metal ions. Zn2+ and Pb2+ could promote the adsorption of NOR by PE. This study reveals the interaction mechanisms between microplastics and antibiotics and provides a more comprehensive theoretical basis for an ecological environmental risk assessment of different microplastics.

Metal borides/borates have been considered promising as oxygen evolution reaction catalysts; however, to date, there is a dearth of evidence of long-term stability at practical current densities. Here we report a phase composition modulation approach to fabricate effective borides/borates-based catalysts. We find that metal borides in-situ formed metal borates are responsible for their high activity. This knowledge prompts us to synthesize NiFe-Boride, and to use it as a templating precursor to form an active NiFe-Borate catalyst. This boride-derived oxide catalyzes oxygen evolution with an overpotential of 167 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte and requires a record-low overpotential of 460 mV to maintain water splitting performance for over 400 h at current density of 1 A/cm2. We couple the catalyst with CO reduction in an alkaline membrane electrode assembly electrolyser, reporting stable C2H4 electrosynthesis at current density 200 mA/cm2 for over 80 h.

Genomic discovery and characterization of risk loci for type 2 diabetes (T2D) have been conducted primarily in individuals of European ancestry. We conducted a multiethnic genome-wide association study of T2D among 53,102 cases and 193,679 control subjects from African, Hispanic, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and European population groups in the Population Architecture Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) and Diabetes Genetics Replication and Meta-analysis (DIAGRAM) Consortia. In individuals of African ancestry, we discovered a risk variant in the TGFB1 gene (rs11466334, risk allele frequency (RAF) = 6.8%, odds ratio [OR] = 1.27, p = 2.06 × 10-8), which replicated in independent studies of African ancestry (p = 6.26 × 10-23). We identified a multiethnic risk variant in the BACE2 gene (rs13052926, RAF = 14.1%, OR = 1.08, p = 5.75 × 10-9), which also replicated in independent studies (p = 3.45 × 10-4). We also observed a significant difference in the performance of a multiethnic genetic risk score (GRS) across population groups (pheterogeneity = 3.85 × 10-20). Comparing individuals in the top GRS risk category (40%-60%), the OR was highest in Asians (OR = 3.08) and European (OR = 2.94) ancestry populations, followed by Hispanic (OR = 2.39), Native Hawaiian (OR = 2.02), and African ancestry (OR = 1.57) populations. These findings underscore the importance of genetic discovery and risk characterization in diverse populations and the urgent need to further increase representation of non-European ancestry individuals in genetics research to improve genetic-based risk prediction across populations.

Chemokine is a structure-related protein with a relatively small molecular weight, which can target cells to chemotaxis and promote inflammatory response. Inflammation plays an important role in aging. C-C chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) and its ligand C-C chemokine ligand 25 (CCL25) are involved in the regulating the occurrence and development of various diseases, which has become a research hotspot. Early research analysis of CCR9-deficient mouse models also confirmed various physiological functions of this chemokine in inflammatory responses. Moreover, CCR9/CCL25 has been shown to play an important role in a variety of inflammation-related diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, etc. Therefore, the purpose of this review gives an overview of the recent advances in understanding the roles of CCR9/CCL25 in inflammation and inflammation-associated diseases, which will contribute to the design of future experimental studies on the potential of CCR9/CCL25 and advance the research of CCR9/CCL25 as pharmacological inflammatory targets.

Flotation separation, which is the most important mineral beneficiation technique, is dependent on gas dispersion (hydrodynamic conditions). Thus, many investigations have focused on the precise determination of hydrodynamic conditions such as Reynolds number of the bubbles, bubble velocity, and bubble diameter. However, few studies have examined their relationships with pressure fluctuations in a column flotation. This study introduced the differential pressure fluctuations as an actual variable that could be considered to determine the collection zone's hydrodynamic conditions in a cyclonic microbubble flotation column. In general, the outcomes indicated that superficial gas velocity had the most substantial relationship with the differential pressure fluctuations among other flotation factors (such as pump speed, superficial gas velocity, superficial water velocity, and frother dosage). Furthermore, a high coefficient of determination (R 2 > 0.77) for the equation generated to assess the relationships demonstrated that differential pressure fluctuations could be used as a promising tool to determine the hydrodynamic parameters' characteristics in the flotation columns.

RESUMO

The evolution of seeds is a major reason why flowering plants are a dominant life form on Earth. The developing seed is composed of two fertilization products, the embryo and endosperm, which are surrounded by a maternally derived seed coat. Accumulating evidence indicates that efficient communication among all three seed components is required to ensure coordinated seed development. Cell communication within plant seeds has drawn much attention in recent years. In this study, we review current knowledge of cross-talk among the endosperm, embryo, and seed coat during seed development, and highlight recent advances in this field.
