RESUMO

Rose (Rosa sp.) flowers have a rich diversity of colors resulting from the differential accumulation of anthocyanins, flavonols, and carotenoids. However, the genetic and molecular determinants of the red-petal trait in roses remains poorly understood. Here we report that a transposable element-like insertion (Rosa1) into RcMYB114, a R2R3-MYB transcription factor's promoter region causes its transcription, resulting in red petals. In red-petal varieties, RcMYB114 is expressed specifically in flower organs, but is absent from non-red varieties. Sequencing, yeast two-hybrid, transient transformation, and promoter activity assays of RcMYB114 independently confirmed the role of Rosa1 in altering RcMYB114's transcription and downstream effects on flower color. Genetic and molecular evidence confirmed that the Rosa1 transposable element-like insertion, which is a previously unknown DNA transposable element, is different from those in other plants and is a reliable molecular marker to screen red-petal roses.

Diabetes is an amalgamation of metabolic disorders marked by hyperglycemia. Over time diabetes brings up several other complications with it like cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy. among which diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the one we are concerned about in the present study. Diabetes management requires following a healthy lifestyle with proper medication. Most of the anti-diabetic drugs available at present come with adverse side effects. Nature has provided us with several components that are anti-diabetic in nature which has fewer or no side effects and tangeretin is one among them. Tangeretin is a natural flavonoid abundantly present in orange peel and tangerines. Our study is designed to evaluate tangeretin, as an anti-diabetic medication especially for patients suffering from diabetic nephropathy. The procured healthy rats were first divided into four groups: the group I was maintained as healthy control and the others were subjected to the induction of diabetes by i.p. injection of streptozotocin (STZ) at the concentration of 55mg/kg b.wt .Then, the diabetic rats were further divided into three groups: group II was used as the diabetic control rats and the group III and group IV were administered with tangeretin (25mg/kg b.wt) and positive control drug metformin (150mg/kg b.wt) for 8 weeks. The body weight, blood glucose, and serum insulin levels were estimated at week 0 and week 8. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) inhibitory effect, antioxidant, antilipidemic, nephroprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects of tangeretin on the diabetic-induced rats were evaluated at the end of week 8 in addition to the histopathological assessment of the sections of the kidneys of the experimental rats. All the test results concluded that tangeretin was able to significantly decelerate the progression of DN in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Toxoplasma gondii infects almost all warm-blooded animals, and toxoplasmosis is a common zoonotic parasitic disease worldwide. A nested PCR with high specificity and sensitivity was developed in this study based on the data collected on the infection rate of toxoplasmosis in chickens in Shandong province, and the effect of low temperature on the infectivity of tachyzoites was investigated. The sampling data showed that the total prevalence of T. gondii in Shandong province was 12.3%, and the positive rate varied in different regions, ranging from 6.7% to 21%. Chickens were infected with T. gondii under laboratory conditions, and positive chicken hearts were stored under various cold conditions to infect mice for reinfection evaluation. The results demonstrated that the parasites maintained high infectivity in mice even after 6 h of storage at -20 °C ambient temperature, indicating that short-term cryopreservation is not effective in reducing the risk of T. gondii transmission. These results form the basis for assessing the risk of toxoplasmosis contamination in consumed chicken products and provide information on the prevention of parasite transmission from animals to humans.

This article presents a novel singular value decomposition (SVD)-based robust distributed model predictive control (SVD-RDMPC) strategy for linear systems with additive uncertainties. The system is globally constrained and consists of multiple interrelated subsystems with bounded disturbances, each of whom has local constraints on states and inputs. First, we integrate the steady-state target optimizer into the MPC problem through the offset cost function to formulate a modified single optimization problem for tracking changing targets from real-time optimization. Then, the concept of constraint tightening is utilized to enhance the robustness and ensure robust constraint satisfaction in the presence of interferences. On this basis, the SVD method is introduced to decompose the new optimization problem into several independent subsystems on the orthogonal projection space, and a distributed dual gradient algorithm with convergence proved is implemented to obtain the control of each nominal subsystem. The recursive feasibility is then ensured and the tracking ability of the strategy is analyzed. It is verified that for a target, the system can be steered to a neighborhood of the closest possible steady setpoint. At last, the effectiveness of the raised SVD-RDMPC strategy is established in two simulations on building temperature control and load frequency control.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1) regulates oxidative damage in oral cancer cells by interacting with nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2 (NRF2). DESIGN: The BRCA1 gene was silenced in CAL-27 and DOK cells using specific shRNA, and NRF2 was activated with sulforaphane. The expression levels of BRCA1, NRF2 and its target genes were assessed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. Cell counting kit-8 assay was used to detect cell proliferation, apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry, and 8-OXo-2'-deoxyguanosine level was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of BRCA1 and NRF2 in patients with oral leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: BRCA1 knockdown downregulated NRF2 and its target genes, increased proliferation rates, reduced apoptosis, and increased 8-OXo-2'-deoxyguanosine levels compared to the control. Activation of NRF2 by sulforaphane significantly upregulated NRF2 levels in the BRCA1-depleted cells, and restored proliferation, apoptosis and 8-OXo-2'-deoxyguanosine level in a dose-dependent manner. Compared with patients with leukoplakia, BRCA1 and NRF2 expression were increased in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: BRCA1 depletion increases oxidative damage and promotes the malignant phenotype, which may eventually promote oral carcinogenesis. The NRF2-activator sulforaphane is a potential chemo-preventive agent for oral cancer.

BACKGROUND: Poplar trees provide a large amount of wood material, but many parts of the world are arid or semi-arid areas because of insufficient annual precipitation, which seriously affects the growth of poplar trees. Populus simonii 'Tongliao1' shows strong tolerance to stress environments, and Populus deltoides 'Danhong' shows a stronger growth rate in a suitable environment. To identify drought tolerance-related QTLs and genes, an F1 population derived from the cross between the 'Danhong' and 'Tongliao 1' Populus was assessed under drought stress. RESULTS: We measured drought-related traits such as the relative height growth, relative diameter growth, leaf senescence number, specific leaf area, and leaf relative water content in the population under control and drought environments. The results showed that drought stress reduced the plant height relative growth, ground diameter relative growth, specific leaf area and leaf relative water content and increased the number of leaf drops. A total of 208 QTLs were identified by QTL mapping analysis, and they consisted of 92, 63 and 53 QTLs under control, drought stress treatment and drought index conditions, respectively. A molecular identification marker for drought tolerance, np2841, which was associated with a QTL (qDLRWC-LG10-1) for relative leaf water content, was initially developed. We mined 187 candidate genes for QTL regions of five traits under a drought environment. The reference genome annotation for Populus trichocarpa and a homologous gene analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana identified two candidate genes, Potri.003G171300 and Potri.012G123900, with significant functions in response to drought stress. We identified five key regulatory genes (Potri.006G273500, Potri.007G111500, Potri.007G111600, Potri.007G111700, and Potri.007G111800) related to drought tolerance through the poplar coexpression network. CONCLUSION: In this study, our results indicate that the QTLs can effectively enhance the drought tolerance of poplar. It is a step closer towards unravelling the genetic basis of poplar drought tolerance-related traits, and to providing validated candidate genes and molecular markers for future genetic improvement.

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors are involved in several biological processes both in plant development and stress responses. Agarwood, a major active and economical product, is only induced and accumulated when the roots, stems, or branches are wounded in Aquilaria sinensis. Although genome-wide comprehensive analyses of the bHLH family have been identified in many plants, no systematic study of the genes in this family has been conducted in A. sinensis. In this study, 105 bHLH genes were identified in A. sinensis through genome-wide analysis and named according to their chromosomal locations. Based on a phylogenetic tree, AsbHLH family proteins were classified into 18 subfamilies. Most of them were distributed on eight chromosomes, with the exception of two genes. Based on the tissue-specific expression characteristics and expression patterns in response to methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment, seven AsbHLH genes were likely involved in wound-induced agarwood formation. The results provide comprehensive information on AsbHLHs that can be used to elucidate the molecular functions and physiological roles of these proteins in A. sinensis.

Acidosis is a hallmark of ischemic stroke and a promising neuroprotective target for preventing neuronal injury. Previously, genetic manipulations showed that blockade of acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a)-mediated acidotoxicity could dramatically alleviate the volume of brain infarct and restore neurological function after cerebral ischemia. However, few pharmacological candidates have been identified to exhibit efficacy on ischemic stroke through inhibition of ASIC1a. In this work, we examined the ability of a toxin-inspired compound 5b (C5b), previously found to effectively inhibit ASIC1a in vitro, to exert protective effects in animal models of ischemic stroke in vivo. We found that C5b exerts significant neuroprotective effects not only in acid-induced neuronal death in vitro but also ischemic brain injury in vivo, suggesting that ASIC1a is a druggable target for therapeutic development. More importantly, C5b is able to cross the blood brain barrier and significantly reduce brain infarct volume when administered intravenously in the ischemic animal model, highlighting its systemic availability for therapies against neurodegeneration due to acidotoxicity. Together, our data demonstrate that C5b is a promising lead compound for neuroprotection through inhibiting ASIC1a, which warrants further translational studies.

Deer genera around the globe are threatened by anthropogenic interference. The translocation of alien species and their subsequent genetic introgression into indigenous deer populations is particularly harmful to the species of greatest conservation concern. Products derived from deer, including venison and antler velvet, are also at risk of fraudulent labeling. The current molecular markers used to genetically identify deer species were developed from genome sequences and have limited applicability for cross-species amplification. The absence of efficacious diagnostic techniques for identifying deer species has hampered conservation and wildlife crime investigation efforts. Expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers are reliable tools for individual and species identification, especially in terms of cross-species genotyping. We conducted transcriptome sequencing of sambar (Rusa unicolor) antler velvet and acquired 11,190 EST-SSRs from 65,074 newly assembled unigenes. We identified a total of 55 unambiguous amplicons in sambar (n = 45), which were selected as markers to evaluate cross-species genotyping in sika deer (Cervus nippon, n = 30) and red deer (Cervus elaphus, n = 46), resulting in cross-species amplification rates of 94.5% and 89.1%, respectively. Based on polymorphic information content (>0.25) and genotyping fidelity, we selected 16 of these EST-SSRs for species identification. This marker set revealed significant genetic differentiation based on the fixation index and genetic distance values. Principal coordinate analysis and STRUCTURE analysis revealed distinct clusters of species and clearly identified red-sika hybrids. These markers showed applicability across different genera and proved suitable for identification and phylogenetic analyses across deer species.

Antrodia camphorata (A. camphorata) is an edible fungus containing various bioactive compounds generally used for health benefits. This study aimed to explore the potential neuroprotective activities of solid-state-cultured mycelium of A. camphorata (SCMAC) against Parkinson's disease (PD), as well as the underlying mechanism using an in vitro 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PC12 cell model. The results showed that SCMAC extracts alleviated cell toxicity induced by 6-OHDA and the loss of dopaminergic neurons, which was confirmed by the increase of cell viabilities, inhibition of cell apoptosis, the upregulation of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine transporter (DAT) levels and the downregulation of α-Synuclein level. After purification, 11 compounds were identified by the NMR technique, including a quinone, four phenolic acid derivatives, three ubiquinone derivatives, two alkaloids, and a triterpenoid. The present study suggests that SCMAC could be an attractive candidate for the prevention or treatment of PD. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Parkinson's disease seriously affects the lifetime and quality of the elder population for a long history. Long-term consumption of L-DOPA will result in side effects, such as developing abnormal involuntary movements called dyskinesia. This study showed that natural SCMAC extracts could be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorder.

Reconstructing axonal projections of single neurons at the whole-brain level is currently a converging goal of the neuroscience community that is fundamental for understanding the logic of information flow in the brain. Thousands of single neurons from different brain regions have recently been morphologically reconstructed, but the corresponding physiological functional features of these reconstructed neurons are unclear. By combining two-photon Ca2+ imaging with targeted single-cell plasmid electroporation, we reconstruct the brain-wide morphologies of single neurons that are defined by a sound-evoked response map in the auditory cortices (AUDs) of awake mice. Long-range interhemispheric projections can be reliably labelled via co-injection with an adeno-associated virus, which enables enhanced expression of indicator protein in the targeted neurons. Here we show that this method avoids the randomness and ambiguity of conventional methods of neuronal morphological reconstruction, offering an avenue for developing a precise one-to-one map of neuronal projection patterns and physiological functional features.

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing and is related to sedentary lifestyles and obesity. Many studies were published on the effect of lifestyle interventions on glucose regulation and delay the onset of diabetes in adults with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or prediabetes. This study aimed to investigate the role of lifestyle interventions in individuals with IGT or prediabetes using a meta-analytic approach. PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched from their inception up to January 2020 to select eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The weighted mean difference (WMD; for fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 2-hour plasma glucose (2hPPG)) or relative risk (RR; for the risk of diabetes) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated for pooled effect estimates using the random-effects model. Thirteen RCTs involving 3376 individuals with IGT or prediabetes were selected for this meta-analysis. The results showed that lifestyle interventions were associated with lower FPG (WMD: -0.14; 95% CI: -0.24 to -0.05 mmol/L; p=0.004) and 2hPPG (WMD: -0.66; 95% CI: -1.12 to -0.20 mmol/L; p=0.005) in adults with IGT or prediabetes. Moreover, the risk of diabetes was significantly reduced in individuals who received lifestyle interventions (RR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.60-0.95; p=0.015). Lifestyle interventions could help improve glucose dysregulation and prevent the progression of diabetes in adults with IGT or prediabetes. Further large-scale RCTs should be conducted to assess the effects of long-term lifestyle interventions on diabetic complications in adults with IGT or prediabetes.

Hypoxia, the typical and conspicuous characteristic of most solid tumors, worsens the tumor invasiveness and metastasis. Here, we engineered a sequential ultrasound (US)/hypoxia-sensitive sonochemotherapeutic nanoprodrug by initially synthesizing the hypoxia-activated azo bond-containing camptothecin (CPT) prodrug (CPT2-Azo) and then immobilizing it into the mesopores of sonosensitizer-integrated metal organic frameworks (MOF NPs). Upon entering the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME), the structure of CPT2-Azo immobilized MOFs (denoted as MCA) was ruptured and the loaded nontoxic CPT2-Azo prodrug was released from the MOF NPs. Under US actuation, this sonochemotherapeutic nanoprodrug not only promoted sonosensitizer-mediated sonodynamic therapy (SDT) via the conversion of oxygen into cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) but also aggravated hypoxia in the TME by elevating oxygen consumption. The exacerbated hypoxia in turn served as a positive amplifier to boost the activation of CPT2-Azo, and the controllable release of toxic chemotherapeutic drug (CPT), and compensated the insufficient treatment efficacy of SDT. In vitro and in vivo evaluations confirmed that sequential SDT and tumor hypoxia-activated sonochemotherapy promoted the utmost of tumor hypoxia and thereby contributed to the augmented antitumor efficacy, resulting in conspicuous apoptotic cell death and noteworthy tumor suppression in vivo. Our work provides a distinctive insight into the exploitation of the hypoxia-activated sonochemotherapeutic nanoprodrug that utilizes the hypoxic condition in TME, a side effect of SDT, to initiate chemotherapy, thus causing a significantly augmented treatment outcome compared to conventional SDT.

In Hubei, China, where the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic first emerged, the government has enforced strict quarantine and lockdown measures. Longitudinal studies suggest that the impact of adverse events on psychological adjustment is highly heterogenous. To better understand protective and risk factors that predict longitudinal psychopathology and resilience following strict COVID-19 lockdowns, this study used unsupervised machine learning to identify half-year longitudinal trajectories (April, June, August, and October, 2020) of three mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) among a sample of Hubei residents (N = 326), assessed a broad range of person- and context-level predictors, and applied least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression, a supervised machine learning approach, to select best predictors for trajectory memberships of resilience and chronic psychopathology. Across outcomes, most individuals remained resilient. Models with both person- and context-level predictors showed excellent predictive accuracy, except for models predicting chronic anxiety. The person-level models showed either good or excellent predictive accuracy. The context-level models showed good predictive accuracy for depression trajectories but were only fair in predicting trajectories of anxiety and PTSD. Overall, the most critical person-level predictors were worry, optimism, fear of COVID, and coping flexibility, whereas important context-level predictors included features of stressful life events, community satisfaction, and family support. This study identified clinical patterns of response to COVID-19 lockdowns and used a combination of risk and protective factors to accurately differentiate these patterns. BACKGROUND: To preliminary evaluate the application of SaCoVLM™ video laryngeal mask airway in airway management of general anesthesia. METHODS: We recruited 100 adult patients (ages 18-78 years, male 19, female 81, weight 48-90 kg) with normal predicted airway (Mallampati I ~ II, unrestricted mouth opening, normal head and neck mobility) and ASA I-II who required general anaesthesia. The SaCoVLM™ was inserted after anesthesia induction and connected with the anesthesia machine for ventilation. Our primary outcome was glottic visualization grades. Secondary outcomes included seal pressure, success rate of insertion, intraoperative findings (gastric reflux and contraposition), gastric drainage and 24-h complications after operation. RESULTS: The laryngeal inlet was exposed in all the patients and shown on the video after SaCoVLM™ insertion. The status of glottic visualization was classified: grade 1 in 55 cases, grade 2 in 23 cases, grade 3 in 14 cases and grade 4 in 8 cases. The first-time success rate of SaCoVLM™ insertion was 95% (95% CI = 0.887 to 0.984), and the total success rate was 96% (95% CI = 0.901 to 0.989). The sealing pressure of SaCoVLM™ was 34.1 ± 6.2 cmH2O and the gastric drainage were smooth. Only a small number of patients developed mild complications after SaCoVLM™ was removed (such as blood stains on SaCoVLM™ and sore throat). CONCLUSIONS: The SaCoVLM™ can visualize partial or whole laryngeal inlets during the surgery, with a high success rate, a high sealing pressure and smooth gastroesophageal drainage. SaCoVLM™ could be a promise new effective supraglottic device to airway management during general anesthesia. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ChiCTR, ChiCTR2000028802 .Registered 4 January 2020.

Microgravity is an ecological factor that affects the environment of the body. In this study, quantitative isobaric labeling (tandem mass tag) method was used to study the changes in human gastric mucosal cells under simulated microgravity for the first time. Comparative proteomic analysis identified 394 (202 upregulated and 192 downregulated) and 542 (286 upregulated and 256 downregulated) proteins differentially regulated by simulated microgravity after 3 and 7 days, respectively. Then the identified proteins were subjected to Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses for further exploration. The results of the analysis showed that the ribosomes of gastric mucosal cells were significantly impacted after exposure to simulated microgravity for 3 days, and the cells appeared to be in a state of stress and inflammation. Exposure to simulated microgravity for 7 days significantly affected the mitochondria of the cells, oxidative stress became more evident, while inflammation and weakened connections were observed in the cells. The results of this study highlighted the temporal response trend of gastric mucosal cells to the stressor of microgravity at the two time points of 3 and 7 days. OBJECTIVE: The traditional anterior approach for multilevel severe cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is demanding and risky. Recently, a novel surgical procedure-anterior controllable antedisplacement and fusion (ACAF)-was introduced by the authors to deal with these problems and achieve better clinical outcomes. However, to the authors' knowledge, the immediate and long-term biomechanical stability obtained after this procedure has never been evaluated. Therefore, the authors compared the postoperative biomechanical stability of ACAF with those of more traditional approaches: anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF). METHODS: To determine and assess pre- and postsurgical range of motion (ROM) (2 Nm torque) in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation in the cervical spine, the authors collected cervical areas (C1-T1) from 18 cadaveric spines. The cyclic fatigue loading test was set up with a 3-Nm cycled load (2 Hz, 3000 cycles). All samples used in this study were randomly divided into three groups according to surgical procedures: ACDF, ACAF, and ACCF. The spines were tested under the following conditions: 1) intact state flexibility test; 2) postoperative model (ACDF, ACAF, ACCF) flexibility test; 3) cyclic loading (n = 3000); and 4) fatigue model flexibility test. RESULTS: After operations were performed on the cadaveric spines, the segmental and total postoperative ROM values in all directions showed significant reductions for all groups. Then, the ROMs tended to increase during the fatigue test. No significant crossover effect was detected between evaluation time and operation method. Therefore, segmental and total ROM change trends were parallel among the three groups. However, the postoperative and fatigue ROMs in the ACCF group tended to be larger in all directions. No significant differences between these ROMs were detected in the ACDF and ACAF groups. CONCLUSIONS: This in vitro biomechanical study demonstrated that the biomechanical stability levels for ACAF and ACDF were similar and were both significantly greater than that of ACCF. The clinical superiority of ACAF combined with our current results showed that this procedure is likely to be an acceptable alternative method for multilevel cervical OPLL treatment.

Fungal infection is an emerging threat to reptiles. The main pathogens are fungi of the genera Nannizziopsis, Paranannizziopsis and Ophidiomyces. The clinical symptoms range from mild skin lesions to the dissemination of internal organs and even death. Most of the reported cases are from Europe, North America and Australia. In this study, we report the Nannizziopsis guarroi infection in one captive inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), one captive green iguana (Iguana iguana) and Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola infection in one wild red-banded snake (Dinodon rufozonatum) and one wild Chinese cobra (Naja atra) in Taiwan. The infections were confirmed by the presence of fungal elements in the tissue. The pathogens were identified based on their morphological and DNA sequence characteristics. The susceptibility profiles of the fungal strains to nine antifungal drugs were obtained using broth microdilution methods. The presence of both fungal species in Asia highlights the urgent need for surveillance and close monitoring of reptile infections to prevent them from spreading and to the possible collapse of reptile populations in the wild.

OBJECTIVE: To achieve the anatomical evaluation of spinal nerve and cervical intervertebral foramina in anterior controllable antedisplacement and fusion (ACAF) surgery, a novel surgical technique with the wider decompression, through a cadaveric and radiologic study. METHODS: Radiographic data of consecutive 47 patients (21 by ACAF and 26 by anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion [ACCF]) who have accepted surgery for treatment of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament(OPLL) and stenosis from March 2017 to March 2018 were retrospectively reviewed and compared between an ACAF group and ACCF group. Three postoperative radiographic parameters were evaluated: the decompression width and the satisfaction rate of decompression at the entrance zone of intervertebral foramina on computed tomography (CT), and the transverse diameter of spinal cord in the decompression levels on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the anatomic study, three fresh cadaveric spines (death within 3 months) undergoing ACAF surgery were also studied. Four anatomic parameters were evaluated: the width of groove, the distance between the bilateral origins of ventral rootlets, the length of ventral rootlet from their origin to the intervertebral foramina, the descending angle of ventral rootlet. RESULTS: The groove created in ACAF surgery included the bilateral origins of ventral rootlets. The rootlets tended to be vertical from the rostral to the caudal direction as their takeoff points from the central thecal sac became higher and farther away from their corresponding intervertebral foramina gradually. No differences were identified between left and right in terms of the length of ventral rootlet from the origin to the intervertebral foramina and the descending angle of ventral rootlet. The decompression width was significantly greater in ACAF group (19.2 ± 1.2 vs 14.7 ± 1.2, 21.3 ± 2.2 vs 15.4 ± 0.9, 21.5 ± 2.1 vs 15.7 ± 1.0, 21.9 ± 1.6 vs 15.9 ± 0.8, from C3 to C6 ). The satisfactory rate of decompression at the entrance zone of intervertebral foramina tended to be better in the left side in ACAF group (significant differences were identified in the left side at C3/4 , C4/5 , C6/7 level, and in the right side at C4/5 level when compared with ACCF). And decompression width was significantly greater than the transverse diameter of spinal cord in ACAF group. Comparatively, there existed no significant difference in the ACCF group besides the C5 level. CONCLUSION: ACAF can decompress the entrance zone of intervertebral foramina effectively and its decompression width includes the origins and massive running part of bilateral ventral rootlets. Due to its wider decompression range, ACAF can be used as a revision strategy for the patients with failed ACCF.
