RESUMO

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides an information-theoretically secure method to share keys between legitimate users. To achieve large-scale deployment of QKD, it should be easily scalable and cost-effective. The infrastructure construction of quantum access network (QAN) expands network capacity and the integration between QKD and classical optical communications reduces the cost of channel. Here, we present a practical downstream QAN over a 10 Gbit/s Ethernet passive optical network (10G-EPON), which can support up to 64 users. In the full coexistence scheme using the single feeder fiber structure, the co-propagation of QAN and 10G-EPON signals with 9 dB attenuation is achieved over 21 km fiber, and the secure key rate for each of 16 users reaches 1.5 kbps. In the partial coexistence scheme using the dual feeder fiber structure, the combination of QAN and full-power 10G-EPON signals is achieved over 11 km with a network capacity of 64-user. The practical QAN over the 10G-EPON in our work implements an important step towards the achievement of large-scale QKD infrastructure.

BACKGROUND: Severe disease of COVID-19 and mortality occur more frequently in male patients than that in female patients may be related to testosterone level. However, the diagnostic value of changes in the level of testosterone in predicting severe disease of male COVID-19 patients has not been determined yet. METHODS: Sixty-one male COVID-19 patients admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine were enrolled. Serum samples at different stages of the patients after admission were collected and testosterone levels were detected to analyze the correlation between testosterone level and disease severity. Transcriptome analysis of PBMC was performed in 34 patients. RESULTS: Testosterone levels at admission in male COVID-19 patients (4.7 nmol/L, IQR: 2.7∼7.7 nmol/L) were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (19.5 nmol/L, IQR: 14.9∼22.5). Testosterone levels in the non-ICU group increased gradually during the progression of the disease, while those in the ICU group remained low. In addition, testosterone level of enrolled patients in the second week after onset was significantly correlated with the severity of pneumonia, and ROC curve showed that testosterone level in the second week after onset was highly effective in predicting the severity of COVID-19. Transcriptome studies have found that testosterone levels of COVID-19 patients were associated with immune response, including T cell activation and regulation of lymphocyte activation. In addition, CD28 and Inositol Polyphosphate-4-Phosphatase Type II B (INPP4B) were found positively correlated with testosterone. CONCLUSIONS: Serum testosterone is an independent risk factor for predicting the severity of COVID-19 in male patients, and the level of serum testosterone in the second week after onset is valuable for evaluating the severity of COVID-19. Testosterone level is associated with T cell immune activation. The monitoring of serum testosterone should be highlighted in clinical treatment and the related mechanism should be further studied.

Background: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has been widely performed to treat cervical generative diseases. Cage subsidence is a complication after ACDF. Although it is known that segmental kyphosis, acceleration of adjacent segmental disease, and restenosis may occur due to cages subsidence; however detailed research comparing zero-profile cages (ROI-C) and conventional plate and cage construct (CPC) on cage subsidence has been lacking. Objective: The objectives of this study was to compare the rate of postoperative cage subsidence between zero profile anchored spacer (ROI-C) and conventional cage and plate construct (CPC) and investigate the risk factors associated with cage subsidence following ACDF. Methods: Seventy-four patients with ACDF who received either ROI-C or CPC treatment from October 2013 to August 2018 were included in this retrospective cohort study. Clinical and radiological outcomes and the incidence of cage subsidence at final follow up-were compared between groups. All patients were further categorized into the cage subsidence (CS) and non-cage subsidence (NCS) groups for subgroup analysis. Results: The overall subsidence rate was higher in the ROI-C group than in the CPC group (66.67 vs. 38.46%, P = 0.006). The incidence of cage subsidence was significantly different between groups for multiple-segment surgeries (75 vs. 34.6%, P = 0.003), but not for single-segment surgeries (54.55 vs. 42.30%, P = 0.563). Male sex, operation in multiple segments, using an ROI-C, and over-distraction increased the risk of subsidence. Clinical outcomes and fusion rates were not affected by cage subsidence. Conclusion: ROI-C use resulted in a higher subsidence rate than CPC use in multi-segment ACDF procedures. The male sex, the use of ROI-C, operation in multiple segments, and over-distraction were the most significant factors associated with an increase in the risk of cage subsidence.

Eria lasiopetala (Willd.) Ormerod is an important ornamental plant and traditional Chinese medicine resource, but it is currently listed as a class II protected species due to its few resources in China. To further clarify the taxonomic status as well as provide genetic information for its conservation, the chloroplast genome of E. lasiopetala was assembled and characterized in this study. Results show that the genome is 158,740 bp in length, including a large single copy, two inverted repeats, and a small single copy, their lengths are 88,062, 26,213, and 18,252 bp, respectively. There are 132 genes in the chloroplast genome, among which the number of encoding protein genes, rRNA genes, and tRNA genes are 86, 8, and 38, respectively. The phylogenetic tree clearly shows that E. lasiopetala and Eria corneri cluster together with 100% support, rather than with Dendrobium group.

BACKGROUND: Few reports to date have evaluated the effects of different pedicle screw insertion depths on sagittal balance and prognosis after posterior lumbar interbody and fusion (PLIF) in patients with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (LDS). METHODS: A total of 88 patients with single-level PLIF for LDS from January 2018 to December 2019 were enrolled. Long screw group (Group L): 52 patients underwent long pedicle screw fixation (the leading edge of the screw exceeded 80% of the anteroposterior diameter of vertebral body). Short screw group (Group S): 36 patients underwent short pedicle screw fixation (the leading edge of the screw was less than 60% of the anteroposterior diameter of vertebral body). Local deformity parameters of spondylolisthesis including slip degree (SD) and segment lordosis (SL), spino-pelvic sagittal plane parameters including pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS) and lumbar lordosis (LL), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for back pain of both groups were compared. Postoperative complications, including vertebral fusion rate and screw loosening rate, were recorded. RESULTS: Except that PI in Group S at the final follow-up was not statistically different from the preoperative value (P > 0.05), other parameters were significantly improved compared with preoperative values one month after surgery and at the final follow-up (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in parameters between Group L and Group S before and one month after surgery (P > 0.05). At the final follow-up, SD, SL, LL, PT and PI-LL differed significantly between the two groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the preoperative results, ODI and VAS in both groups decreased significantly one month after surgery and at the final follow-up (P < 0.05). Significant differences of ODI and VAS were found between the two groups at the final follow-up (P < 0.05). Postoperative complications were not statistically significant between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: PLIF can significantly improve the prognosis of patients with LDS. In terms of outcomes with an average follow-up time of 2 years, the deeper the screw depth is within the safe range, the better the spino-pelvic sagittal balance may be restored and the better the quality of life may be.

Quantum key distribution endows people with information-theoretical security in communications. Twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) has attracted considerable attention because of its outstanding key rates over long distances. Recently, several demonstrations of TF-QKD have been realized. Nevertheless, those experiments are implemented in the laboratory, and therefore a critical question remains about whether the TF-QKD is feasible in real-world circumstances. Here, by adopting the sending-or-not-sending twin-field QKD (SNS-TF-QKD) with the method of actively odd parity pairing (AOPP), we demonstrate a field-test QKD over 428 km of deployed commercial fiber and two users are physically separated by about 300 km in a straight line. To this end, we explicitly measure the relevant properties of the deployed fiber and develop a carefully designed system with high stability. The secure key rate we achieved breaks the absolute key rate limit of repeaterless QKD. The result provides a new distance record for the field test of both TF-QKD and all types of fiber-based QKD systems. Our work bridges the gap of QKD between laboratory demonstrations and practical applications and paves the way for an intercity QKD network with measurement-device-independent security.

Objective: To investigate the role of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells. Methods: Nucleus pulposus (NP) cells were isolated from SD rat, and thereafter, passage three (P3) NP cells were divided into the following experimental groups: control, PI3K/AKT agonist IGF-1 (25 ng/ml, 50 ng/ml, and 100 ng/ml), and PI3K/AKT inhibitor LY294002 (5 µM, 10 µM, and 20 µM). Flow cytometry and BrdU cell proliferation assays were performed to assess apoptosis and the proliferation rate of NP cells. Western blot analysis was performed to examine the protein expression level of Col II, Col X, Aggrecan, and MMP13. Results: PI3K/AKT inhibitor LY294002 increased the rate of apoptosis in NP cells when compared to the control and decreased the proliferation rate when compared to control. Moreover, LY294002 decreased the protein expression level of Col-II and Aggrecan in NP cells. At the same time, LY294002 increased the protein expression level of MMP13 and Col-X in NP cells. Through activating PI3K/AKT, IGF-1 increased the proliferation rate when compared to control and decreased the rate of apoptosis when compared to control. Additionally, IGF-1 decreased the protein expression level of MMP13 and Col-X and increased Col-II and Aggrecan in NP cells. Conclusion: The inhibition of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway accelerated the apoptosis of NP cells and facilitated the extracellular matrix degradation. However, the activation of PI3K/AKT pathway partly prevented the NP cell from apoptosis and promoted their proliferation. Meanwhile, its activation also delayed the loss of extracellular matrix.

'How to improve individual initiative' has become an important subject facing current researchers and practitioners. This study attempts to answer this question from the perspective of on-the-job embeddedness based on social cognitive theory, organization attachment theory and cognitive neural experiment. We revealed the differences in the effects of three dimensions of on-the-job embeddedness on individuals with different initiative by event-related potential (ERP) cognitive neural experiment. The experimental results showed that the effect on high-initiative individuals was in the descending order of organization fit, organization link, organization sacrifice; the effect on general-initiative individuals was in the descending order of organization link, organization fit, organization sacrifice; the effect on low-initiative individuals was in the descending order of organization sacrifice, organization link, organization fit. The ultimate goal is to put forward management strategies for individuals with different initiative from these three dimensions, to promote their initiative level and active participation in production activities.

Diet and bile play critical roles in shaping gut microbiota, but the molecular mechanism underlying interplay with intestinal microbiota is unclear. Here, we showed that lemon-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (LELNs) enhance lactobacilli toleration to bile. To decipher the mechanism, we used Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) as proof of concept to show that LELNs enhance LGG bile resistance via limiting production of Msp1 and Msp3, resulting in decrease of bile accessibility to cell membrane. Furthermore, we found that decline of Msps protein levels was regulated through specific tRNAser UCC and tRNAser UCG decay. We identified RNase P, an essential housekeeping endonuclease, being responsible for LELNs-induced tRNAser UCC and tRNAser UCG decay. We further identified galacturonic acid-enriched pectin-type polysaccharide as the active factor in LELNs to increase bile resistance and downregulate tRNAser UCC and tRNAser UCG level in the LGG. Our study demonstrates a tRNA-based gene expression regulation mechanism among lactobacilli to increase bile resistance.

BACKGROUND: Increasing radiosensitivity of cancer cells can enhance the efficacy of cervical cancer treatment. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the potential roles and mechanism of baicalein in regulating the radiosensitivity of cervical cancer cells in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to assess miR-183 expression in End1/E6E7 cells, Hela cells and Hela cells irradiated with X-ray (0 Gy, 1 Gy, 3 Gy, 5 Gy, and 10 Gy). Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) method measured cell viability of Hela cells after miR-183 regulation, baicalein or RO8191 treatment. Apoptosis rates were detected using flow cytometry. Thereafter, expression of Bcl-2, Bax and caspase-3 RNA was also detected through RT-qPCR. Protein concentrations of E-cadherin, N-cadherin, Vimentin in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), phospho-JAK2/STAT3, and total Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 STAT3 (JAK2/STAT3) were examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods. RO8191, a JAK2/STAT3 activator, was used to activate the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. RESULTS: The miR-183 expression was significantly lower in Hela cells compared to End1/E6E7 cells. Following upregulation of miR-183 in Hela cells, cell viability was inhibited while apoptosis was promoted. Moreover, EMT was inhibited after miR-183 over-expression. X-ray treatment markedly reduced the cell survival rate and increased miR-183 RNA expression. Baicalein treatment severely reduced the cell viability of 10-Gy X-ray-irradiated Hela cells, partially reversing the effect of miR-183, and also increased apoptosis and prevented EMT in irradiated cells. Y1007/8 in JAK2 and tyrosine (Tyr) residue 705 of STAT3 were phosphorylated, resulting in high expression of JAK2/STAT3, which was decreased by irradiation and baicalein treatment. RO8191 activated JAK2/STAT3 signaling, promoted cell viability and EMT, and inhibited cell apoptosis, while baicalein partly reversed the functions of RO8191. CONCLUSIONS: Baicalein inhibited cell viability and EMT, and induced cell apoptosis of Hela cells, through upregulating miR-183 via inactivation of the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway.

Lung inflammation is a hallmark of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this study, we show that mice develop inflamed lung tissue after being administered exosomes released from the lung epithelial cells exposed to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Nsp12 and Nsp13 (exosomesNsp12Nsp13). Mechanistically, we show that exosomesNsp12Nsp13 are taken up by lung macrophages, leading to activation of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and the subsequent induction of an array of inflammatory cytokines. Induction of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1ß from exosomesNsp12Nsp13-activated lung macrophages contributes to inducing apoptosis in lung epithelial cells. Induction of exosomesNsp12Nsp13-mediated lung inflammation was abolished with ginger exosome-like nanoparticle (GELN) microRNA (miRNA aly-miR396a-5p. The role of GELNs in inhibition of the SARS-CoV-2-induced cytopathic effect (CPE) was further demonstrated via GELN aly-miR396a-5p- and rlcv-miR-rL1-28-3p-mediated inhibition of expression of Nsp12 and spike genes, respectively. Taken together, our results reveal exosomesNsp12Nsp13 as potentially important contributors to the development of lung inflammation, and GELNs are a potential therapeutic agent to treat COVID-19.

Background: Cholecystectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed worldwide. The objective of this large, population-based cohort study is to explore the risk factors of pneumonia after cholecystectomy in Taiwan. Methods: From the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database, we selected all patients who underwent cholecystectomy by using ICD-9-codes, from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2016. The patients were separated into two groups based on the presence or absence of postoperative pneumonia. Basic information, comorbidities, and postoperative complications were evaluated using a t-test or chi-square test. There were 6056 patients in the pneumonia group and 24224 patients in the control group. These two groups were shown in a ratio of 1 : 4 and were matched by age and sex. The log-rank test was used to examine differences in postoperative mortality between patients with and without pneumonia. Preoperative risk factors were analyzed using logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for age and sex. Results: The final dataset included 282184 cholecystectomy patients. Of these patients, 6056 (2.15%) had postoperative new-onset pneumonia. The patient-related risk factors for pneumonia after cholecystectomy in the order of relevance were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, surgical type, hemodialysis, coronary artery disease, and liver cirrhosis. Compared to patients without postcholecystectomy pneumonia, those with postcholecystectomy pneumonia had higher rates of mortality (within first month, 1.72% vs. 2.28%, P < 0.005) and admission to intensive care unit (15.02% vs. 41.80%, P < 0.0001) and longer hospital stays (10.71 vs. 18.55 days, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Our results show that postcholecystectomy associated with pneumonia had higher rates of morbidity and mortality in this clinical population. Early identification and possible management of risk factors for pneumonia could improve outcomes of cholecystectomy and lower the risk for patient comorbidities after surgery.

Agrimonia pilosa var. nepalensis (D. Don) Nakai is an herbaceous species of Rosaceae distributed in China. It has ornamental and ecological values. Lack of genetic background seriously hinders its further research and utilization. To provide genetic information for further study of it, complete chloroplast (cp) genome was characterized in this study. The genome is a circular molecule of 155,147 bp in length with overall GC content of 36.9%, which contains 85 protein-coding genes, eight ribosomal RNA genes, and 37 transfer RNA genes. It contains a typical tetrad structure, including a large single copy, a small single copy, and two inverted repeat regions. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that A. pilosa var. nepalensis and A. pilosa are closely related. Result of this study could provide genetic information for further research of A. pilosa var. nepalensis.

PURPOSE: To report the long-term outcomes of Boston keratoprosthesis type I (B-KPro type I) implantation in the management of severe ocular surface disorders. METHODS: Retrospective case series. Patients who underwent B-KPro type I implantation at the People's Liberation Army General Hospital were enrolled between March 2011 and September 2019. Data regarding visual acuity (VA), B-KPro type I retention and postoperative complications were recorded and analysed. RESULTS: A total of 103 eyes of 100 patients who underwent B-KPro type I implantation were included. The main indications were chemical burn (59.2%), ocular trauma (25.2%), herpetic keratitis (11.7%) and autoimmune diseases (3.9%). The percentage of eyes with postoperative VA of 10/200 or better was 82.7% at 6 months, 82.8% at 12 months, 77.9% at 2 years, 72.4% at 3 years, 71.1% at 4 years, 69.4% at 5 years, 58.9% at 6 years, 56.8% at 7 years and 42.9% at 8 years. Preoperatively, 8.7% eyes were diagnosed with new-onset glaucoma. Retroprosthetic membrane formation occurred in 19.4% eye. Corneal melting occurred in 18.4% eyes. Sterile vitritis was diagnosed in 4.9% eyes and infectious endophthalmitis in 2.9% eyes. Retinal detachment occurred in 0.9% eyes. CONCLUSIONS: In a Chinese patient group, B-KPro type I is a viable option for treating severe ocular surface disorders in eyes where conventional keratoplasty would have a poor prognosis, especially in patients with chemical and thermal burns. Improved visual outcomes and high retention rate can be achieved and maintained in most cases.

Background: Diet manipulation is the basis for prevention of obesity and diabetes. The molecular mechanisms that mediate the diet-based prevention of insulin resistance are not well understood. Here, as proof-of-concept, ginger-derived nanoparticles (GDNP) were used for studying molecular mechanisms underlying GDNP mediated prevention of high-fat diet induced insulin resistance. Methods: Ginger-derived nanoparticles (GDNP) were isolated from ginger roots and administered orally to C57BL/6 high-fat diet mice. Fecal exosomes released from intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) of PBS or GDNP treated high-fat diet (HFD) fed mice were isolated by differential centrifugation. A micro-RNA (miRNA) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array was used to profile the exosomal miRs and miRs of interest were further analyzed by quantitative real time (RT) PCR. miR-375 or antisense-miR375 was packed into nanoparticles made from the lipids extracted from GDNP. Nanoparticles was fluorescent labeled for monitoring their in vivo trafficking route after oral administration. The effect of these nanoparticles on glucose and insulin response of mice was determined by glucose and insulin tolerance tests. Results: We report that HFD feeding increased the expression of AhR and inhibited the expression of miR-375 and VAMP7. Treatment with orally administered ginger-derived nanoparticles (GDNP) resulted in reversing HFD mediated inhibition of the expression of miR-375 and VAMP7. miR-375 knockout mice exhibited impaired glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance. Induction of intracellular miR-375 led to inhibition of the expression of AhR and VAMP7 mediated exporting of miR-375 into intestinal epithelial exosomes where they were taken up by gut bacteria and inhibited the production of the AhR ligand indole. Intestinal exosomes can also traffic to the liver and be taken up by hepatocytes, leading to miR-375 mediated inhibition of hepatic AhR over-expression and inducing the expression of genes associated with the hepatic insulin response. Altogether, GDNP prevents high-fat diet-induced insulin resistance by miR-375 mediated inhibition of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor mediated pathways over activated by HFD feeding. Conclusion: Collectively our findings reveal that oral administration of GDNP to HFD mice improves host glucose tolerance and insulin response via regulating AhR expression by GDNP induced miR-375 and VAMP7.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to evaluate the association of preoperative anxiety with inflammatory indicators and postoperative complications in patients undergoing scheduled aortic valve replacement surgery. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed. The Hamilton Anxiety Scale was used to assess preoperative anxiety. The serum white blood cell (WBC) count and concentrations of C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-8 were measured 1 day preoperatively and 3 and 7 days postoperatively. Postoperative complications were also recorded. RESULTS: Seventy-three patients were included. The incidence of preoperative anxiety was 30.1% (22/73). The payment source was the only independent risk factor for preoperative anxiety. The incidence of postoperative complications was lowest in the mild anxiety group. The WBC count 3 days postoperatively was significantly lower in the mild than moderate-severe anxiety group. The IL-8 concentration 1 day preoperatively was highest in the no anxiety group. CONCLUSIONS: Mild preoperative anxiety might help to improve clinical outcomes. However, further investigations with more patients are warranted. Patients with different degrees of anxiety may have different levels of inflammatory cytokines.

Quantum key distribution (QKD)1,2 has the potential to enable secure communication and information transfer3. In the laboratory, the feasibility of point-to-point QKD is evident from the early proof-of-concept demonstration in the laboratory over 32 centimetres4; this distance was later extended to the 100-kilometre scale5,6 with decoy-state QKD and more recently to the 500-kilometre scale7-10 with measurement-device-independent QKD. Several small-scale QKD networks have also been tested outside the laboratory11-14. However, a global QKD network requires a practically (not just theoretically) secure and reliable QKD network that can be used by a large number of users distributed over a wide area15. Quantum repeaters16,17 could in principle provide a viable option for such a global network, but they cannot be deployed using current technology18. Here we demonstrate an integrated space-to-ground quantum communication network that combines a large-scale fibre network of more than 700 fibre QKD links and two high-speed satellite-to-ground free-space QKD links. Using a trusted relay structure, the fibre network on the ground covers more than 2,000 kilometres, provides practical security against the imperfections of realistic devices, and maintains long-term reliability and stability. The satellite-to-ground QKD achieves an average secret-key rate of 47.8 kilobits per second for a typical satellite pass-more than 40 times higher than achieved previously. Moreover, its channel loss is comparable to that between a geostationary satellite and the ground, making the construction of more versatile and ultralong quantum links via geosynchronous satellites feasible. Finally, by integrating the fibre and free-space QKD links, the QKD network is extended to a remote node more than 2,600 kilometres away, enabling any user in the network to communicate with any other, up to a total distance of 4,600 kilometres.

High-fat diet (HFD) decreases insulin sensitivity. How high-fat diet causes insulin resistance is largely unknown. Here, we show that lean mice become insulin resistant after being administered exosomes isolated from the feces of obese mice fed a HFD or from patients with type II diabetes. HFD altered the lipid composition of exosomes from predominantly phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) in exosomes from lean animals (L-Exo) to phosphatidylcholine (PC) in exosomes from obese animals (H-Exo). Mechanistically, we show that intestinal H-Exo is taken up by macrophages and hepatocytes, leading to inhibition of the insulin signaling pathway. Moreover, exosome-derived PC binds to and activates AhR, leading to inhibition of the expression of genes essential for activation of the insulin signaling pathway, including IRS-2, and its downstream genes PI3K and Akt. Together, our results reveal HFD-induced exosomes as potential contributors to the development of insulin resistance. Intestinal exosomes thus have potential as broad therapeutic targets.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to summarize the predictors of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients after hip surgery. METHODS: A literature search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for studies assessing the predictors of AKI after hip fracture surgery. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD) of those who experienced AKI compared to those who did not were calculated for each variable. Evidence was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: Ten studies with 34 potential factors were included in the meta-analysis. In the primary analysis, 12 factors were associated with AKI, comprising males (OR 1.25; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.14-1.36), advanced age (MD 2.28; 95% CI 0.80-3.75), myocardial infarction (OR 1.39; 95% CI 1.18-1.63), hypertension (OR 1.46; 95% CI 1.13-1.89), diabetes (OR 1.84; 95% CI 1.40-2.42), chronic kidney disease (OR 3.66; 95% CI 2.21-6.07), hip arthroplasty (OR 1.35; 95% CI 1.22-1.50), angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers use (OR 2.28; 95% CI 1.68-3.08), more intraoperative blood loss (MD 44.06; 95% CI 2.88-85.24), higher preoperative blood urea nitrogen levels (MD 5.29; 95% CI 3.38-7.20), higher preoperative serum creatinine levels (MD 0.4; 95% CI 0.26-0.53), and lower preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (MD -19.59; 95% CI -26.92--12.26). Another 13 factors related to AKI in individual studies were identified in the systematic review. CONCLUSION: Related prophylaxis strategies should be implemented in patients involved with the above-mentioned characteristics to prevent AKI after hip surgery.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the awareness, knowledge and attitudes towards cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) among relatives of people with and without heart disease and their influence in South China. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional survey. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the demographic factors associated with CPR training, learning and knowledge. SETTING: The study was conducted in two hospitals, the largest cardiovascular institute and the largest eye care centre in South China. PARTICIPANTS: Healthy individuals who accompanied their relatives with heart disease to the outpatient department of cardiovascular disease and systemically healthy patients who came for regular ophthalmic examination and had no relatives with heart disease were consecutively recruited for the study. A total of 1644 respondents with heart disease relatives and 813 respondents without heart disease relatives completed the survey. RESULTS: Thirty three per cent of respondents never heard of CPR and only 11% had received CPR training. Factors associated with a higher rate of CPR training were higher level of education and income (p<0.001). Most respondents stated that CPR training was necessary and would like to learn CPR. However, only one-third considered it beneficial to perform CPR as a layperson. In addition, healthcare respondents (p<0.001), younger (p<0.05) and more educated respondents (p<0.001) earned higher scores on the knowledge of CPR skills. Only 5.3% had perfect scores on a CPR skills test. Notably, respondents with relatives suffering from heart disease had significantly less training experience and CPR knowledge than those without (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Although the attitudes towards learning CPR are very positive, there was a lack of knowledge on this topic among the general public. This study demonstrates an urgent need to boost awareness and training in CPR in South China, especially among people whose relatives have heart disease.
