BACKGROUND: Restoration of joint congruity is an important factor for the prevention of subsequent arthritis in patients with Bennett's fracture. Surgical treatment of Bennett's fracture is thus generally recommended for displaced intra-articular fractures to the proximal aspect of the thumb metacarpal. Fluoroscopic examination is used to evaluate the adequacy of closed reduction after pinning of Bennett's fracture. The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of fluoroscopy to determine the reduction of Bennett's fractures. METHODS: A model was created, to mimic a Bennett's fracture utilizing ten fresh-frozen cadaveric hands. An oblique cut was made in the proximal aspect of the thumb metacarpal using an oscillating saw. The small oblique fragment involved 1/4-1/3 of the joint surface was then shifted in position creating a step-off or gap at the fracture site. An anatomical reduction model, gap models (1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm), and step-off models (1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm) were created using percutaneous fixation with two 1.0 mm Kirschner wires for each cadaveric hand. Fluoroscopic assessment then took place and was reviewed by 2 attending hand surgeons blinded to the actual position. Their estimated fluoroscopic position was then compared to the actual displacement. RESULTS: The step-off and gap on fluoroscopic examination showed a significant difference compared to the step-off and gap from direct visualization. The frequency of underestimation for the 3 mm displacement models from the fluoroscopic examination was 60%. The frequency for overestimated was 9% for the models in which displacement was within 2 mm (0, 1, 2 mm). CONCLUSIONS: The assessment of articular gap and step-off using PA (postero-anterior), AP (antero-posterior), and lateral view of fluoroscopic examination is not accurate as compared to the examination by direct visualization. Surgeons need to be aware that PA, AP and lateral view of fluoroscopic examination alone may not be sufficient to judge the final position of a reduced Bennett's fracture. Other methods such as live fluoroscopy in multiple different planes, 3-dimensional fluoroscopy or arthroscopic examination should be considered.

The expression of genes related to the Toll-like receptors (TLRs) signaling pathway were determined. Group A, B and C fed with basal diet and group D, E and F induced TD by feeding a basal diet containing 100 mg·kg-1 thiram. rGSTA3 protein was injected at 20 µg·kg-1 in group B, E and at 50 µg·kg-1 in C, F. Results suggested that lameness and death of chondrocytes were significant on day 14. TLRs signaling pathway related genes were screened based on the transcriptome enrichment, and validated on qPCR. IL-7, TLR2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 15, MyD88, MHC-II, MDA5 and TRAF6 were significantly (p < 0.05) expressed in group E and F as compared to group D on day 14 and 23. IL-7, MHCII, TRAF6, TLR3, TLR5, TLR7, and TLR15 determined insignificant in group D compared to group A on day 23. TD occur in an early phase and alleviated in the later period. rGSTA3 protein can prevent apoptosis and repair degraded chondrocytes.

Structure and assembly processes of soil bacterial communities under different land use at karst areas remained poorly understood to date. To address this issue, soil samples from arable land and pristine forest over a karst cave, located in the acid rain impacted area, Hubei province, were collected and subjected to high-throughput sequencing and multivariate statistical analysis. Bacterial communities and functions remarkably distinguished between soils under different land use. Both edaphic properties (the content of SO42-, C/N, pH, TN) and weathering processes, such as Si concentration, Mg/Al and Ca/Al, significantly impacted on soil bacterial community structures. Variable selections were predominant ecological processes, and pH and SO42- concentration were of significance in community assembly. Random molecular ecological network analysis revealed a more stable and complex microbial network in the forest ecosystem, which can quickly response to environmental change. Forest soil bacteria were mainly phototrophs, involving in C and N cycles, whereas those in arable soils were mainly chemoheterotrophs, capable of degrading organic fertilizers due to anthropogenic activities as confirmed by the analysis of keystone taxa, indicators and functional prediction. These results reveal that land use constructed soil bacterial communities in different aspects such as the structure, potential functions, microbial interactions and correlations with environmental variables. To our knowledge, this is the first report on bacterial community assembly in karst soils under different land use which enhances our understanding about how land use impact on microbial interaction and community assembly processes.

MicroRNA 22 (miR-22) was found in diverse cardiovascular diseases to have a role in regulating multiple cellular processes. However, the regulatory role of miR-22 in aortic dissection (AD) was still unclear. The miR-22 expression in human aorta was explored. A series of mimic, inhibitor, or small interfering RNA (siRNA) plasmids were delivered into vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) to explore the effects of miR-22 and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase α (p38MAPKα) in controlling VSMC apoptosis in vitro. In addition, a mouse AD model was established, and histopathologic analyses were performed to evaluate the regulatory effects of miR-22. Reduced miR-22 and increased apoptosis of VSMCs was seen in human AD aorta. Downregulation of miR-22 increased the apoptosis of VSMCs in vitro. Bioinformatics analyses revealed that p38MAPKα was a target of miR-22. Inhibiting p38MAPKα expression could reverse the apoptosis of VSMCs induced by miR-22 downregulation. Knockdown of miR-22 in the AD mouse model significantly promoted the development of AD. Our data underscore the importance of vascular remodeling and VSMC function in AD. miR-22 may represent a new therapeutic approach for AD by regulating the apoptosis of VSMCs through the MAPK signaling pathway.

Objective: To analyze vascular damage-related risk factors for ED in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and develop a nomogram for the prediction of the factors. METHODS: A total of 181 patients with type 2 DM were included for sexual function assessment, and the clinical data on vascular damage were retrieved from the patients system. After preprocessing, the data were described by the number and percentage of different types of cases and subjected to statistical analysis with the R software. The Lasso regression model was used to optimize feature selection. On the premise of the sample size required for logistic regression analysis according to the number of events per variable, multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed on the selected variables and a nomogram was developed for diabetes-induced erectile dysfunction (DIED). Then, the performance of the nomogram was evaluated with respect to its calibration, discrimination and clinical utility using Harrell's concordance index (C-index), the calibration plot and decision curve analysis, as well as bootstrapping for internal validation. RESULTS: ED was diagnosed in 90 (49.7%) of the 181 patients. The risk factors subjected to logistic regression analysis included the duration of DM (OR = 4.440, 95% CI: 1.594-13.105; OR = 7.667, 95% CI: 1.444-48.733), status of carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) (OR = 3.767, 95% CI: 1.194-12.691), diabetic retinopathy (DR) (OR = 5.382, 95% CI: 1.373-28.301), diabetic kidney disease (DKD) (OR = 4.959, 95% CI: 1.156-27.728), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (OR = 8.210, 95% CI: 2.027-43.507), red blood cell distribution width (RDW) (OR = 2.418, 95% CI: 1.021-5.826), and plasma fibrinogen (Fbg) (OR = 4.649, 95% CI: 2.001-11.339). The C-index of the DIED model was 0.911 (95% CI: 0.869-0.954). The curve representing the performance of the nomogram fit in well with that representing a perfect prediction by the calibration plot. Decision curve analysis indicated that the nomogram was clinically useful for predicting DIED in the type 2 DM patients at the possibility threshold of 6% to 93%. CONCLUSIONS: A nomogram was preliminarily developed for predicting the risk of DIED in type 2 DM patients with respect to the seven independent influencing factors, including the duration of DM, status of c-IMT, DR, DKD, LDL-C, RDW, and Fbg.

BACKGROUND: As a class of endogenous non-coding RNAs with closed-loop structure, circular RNAs (circRNAs) are receiving more and more attention. CircRNAs have been reported to be widely expressed in various human cancers and are implicated in tumorigenesis and progression. The present study aimed to systematically evaluate the clinicopathological, diagnostic and prognostic values of circRNAs in lung cancer. METHODS: We searched literature from PubMed, Web of science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE and Ovid online databases up to May 29, 2020. Statistical analyses were undertaken based on Stata 11.0, Meta-DiSc 1.4, and RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: Finally, a total of 63 eligible articles were included in our meta-analysis, including 18 studies for diagnosis, 22 studies for prognosis and 57 studies for clinicopathological features. In terms of diagnostic values, circRNAs could discriminate between lung cancer patients and the normal individuals with a relatively high pooled area under the curve (AUC) of 0.83 (95%CI, 0.80-0.86). For the prognostic values, we found that elevated expression of oncogenic circRNAs could predict poor survival outcomes based on multivariate analysis (HR = 2.430, 95%CI = 2.003-2.948, P < 0.001 for OS; HR = 2.228, 95%CI = 1.289-3.853, P = 0.004 for DFS) while tumor-suppressor circRNAs was correlated with better OS in univariate analysis (HR = 0.627, 95%CI = 0.519-0.757, P < 0.001). The pooled results suggested that elevated expression of carcinogenic circRNAs was associated with tumor size (OR = 1.676, 95%CI = 1.209-2.323, P = 0.002), smoking statue (OR = 1.260, 95%CI = 1.062-1.494, P = 0.008), TNM stage (OR = 2.345, 95%CI = 1.617-3.399, P < 0.001), differentiation grade (OR = 1.843, 95%CI = 1.228-2.765, P = 0.003), and lymphatic metastasis (OR = 2.097, 95%CI = 1.482-2.967, P < 0.001). Moreover, the expression of tumor-suppressor circRNAs was related to the improved clinicopathological features (lymphatic metastasis: OR = 0.536, 95%CI = 0.311-0.926, P = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis demonstrated that circRNAs could be used as feasible and important biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis and clinicopathological features in lung cancer.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the fields of tumor and immunity. This study focused on the possible prognostic value of immune genes in non-small cell lung cancer patients. We used The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to download gene expression data and clinical information of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). The immune gene list was downloaded from the Immport database. We then constructed immune gene prognostic models on the basis of Cox regression analysis. We further evaluated the clinical significance of the models via survival analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and independent prognostic factor analysis. Moreover, we analyzed the associations of prognostic models with both mutation burdens and neoantigens. Using the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and Kaplan-Meier plotter databases, we evaluated the validity of the prognostic models. The prognostic model of LUAD included 13 immune genes, and the prognostic model of LUSC contained 10 immune genes. High-risk patients based on prognostic models had a lower 5-year survival rate than did low-risk patients. The ROC curve analysis demonstrated the prediction accuracy of the prognostic models, as the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.742, 0.707, and 0.711 for LUAD, and 0.668, 0.703, and 0.668 for LUSC, when the predicted survival times were 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. The mutation burden analysis showed that mutation level was associated with the risk score in patients with LUAD. The analysis based on GEO and Kaplan-Meier plotter demonstrated the prognostic validity of the models. Therefore, immune gene-related models of LUAD and LUSC can predict prognosis. Further study of these genes may enable us to better distinguish between LUAD and LUSC and lead to improvement in immunotherapy for lung cancer.

Varicocele is one of the common causes of infertility in adult males. Surgical intervention can improve the semen quality of some of the patients and significantly increase the pregnancy rate, but fails to benefit them all. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to identify the patients who can significantly benefit from surgical interventions to maximize the effectiveness of surgery and avoid medical waste. This article summarizes the recent progress in surgical indications and strategies for varicocele in adult males, and provides some reference for the management of the disease.

Puerarin is an isoflavone isolated from the medicinal plant Pueraria lobata. The purpose of this study was to study the antiinflammatory and antimatrix-degrading effects of puerarin in a rat osteoarthritis (OA) model and its protective effects on joints. The rat OA model was established by anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) surgery. Rats (n = 40) were divided into nontreated OA, OA + celecoxib (2.86 mg/kg), OA + puerarin (50 and 100 mg/kg), and control groups. Two weeks after surgical induction, puerarin was administered by gavage daily for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, macroscopic observation and histopathological images showed that cartilage damage was reduced after puerarin and celecoxib treatment, the intensity of Safranin O staining was high, and the OARSI scores were significantly reduced compared to the OA group. Puerarin reduced the expression of MMP-3, MMP-13, ADAMTS-5, and COX-2 in the cartilage tissue of ACLT rats, inhibited the production of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α inflammatory factors, increased Type II collagen content, and altered the expression of serum OA cartilage degradation/bone turnover biomarkers (CTX-I, CTX-II, COMP, and PIINP). Based on these findings, we speculate that puerarin supplement to attain recovery from OA damage.

Hyperelodione D (1), an undescribed polyprenylated phloroglucinol derivative possessing 6/6/5/5 fused tetracyclic core, together with hyperelodiones E-F (2-3), two unreported analogues bearing 6/5/5 fused tricyclic structure, were isolated from Hypericum elodeoides Choisy. Their planar structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis (HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR) and their absolute configurations were determined by comparison of experimental and calculated ECD data. The cytotoxicity and retinoid X receptor-α (RXRα) related activities of the isolates were evaluated and the plausible biogenetic pathways of 1-3 were proposed.

BACKGROUND: The exact regulation network of programmed death 1 (PD-1), programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1), and programmed death ligand 2 (PD-L2) signaling in immune escape is largely unknown. We aimed to describe the gene expression profiles related to PD-1 as well as its ligands PD-L1 and PD-L2, thus deciphering their possible biological processes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). AIM: To find the possible mechanism of function of PD-1, PD-L1, and PD-L2 in HCC. METHODS: Based on the expression data of HCC from The Cancer Genome Atlas, the PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 related genes were screened by weighted correlation network analysis method and the biological processes of certain genes were enriched. Relation of PD1/PD-L1/PD-L2 with immune infiltration and checkpoints was investigated by co-expression analysis. The roles of PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 in determination of clinical outcome were also analyzed. RESULTS: Mutations of calcium voltage-gated channel subunit alpha1 E, catenin beta 1, ryanodine receptor 2, tumor suppressor protein p53, and Titin altered PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 expression profiles in HCC. PD-1, PD-L1, and PD-L2 related genes were mainly enriched in biological procedures of T cell activation, cell adhesion, and other important lymphocyte effects. In addition, PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 was related with immune infiltration of CD8 T cells, cytotoxic lymphocytes, fibroblasts, and myeloid dendritic cells. Immune checkpoints of CTLA4, CD27, CD80, CD86, and CD28 were significantly related to the PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 axis. Clinically, PD-1 and PD-L2 expression was correlated with recurrence (P = 0.005 for both), but there was no significant correlation between their expression and HCC patient survival. CONCLUSION: Mutations of key genes influence PD-1, PD-L1, and PD-L2 expression. PD-1, PD-L1, and PD-L2 related genes participate in T cell activation, cell adhesion, and other important lymphocyte effects. The finding that PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 is related to immune infiltration and other immune checkpoints would expand our understanding of promising anti-PD-1 immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Benvitimod cream, a novel synthetic small molecule, was effective in treating mild-to-moderate plaque psoriasis. We conducted a phase III clinical trial to assess the efficacy and safety of benvitimod cream in patients with mild-to-moderate plaque psoriasis. METHODS: We randomly assigned 686 patients (2:1:1) to receive 1% benvitimod cream, 0.005% calcipotriol ointment or placebo twice a day for 12 weeks. The primary efficacy end points were the percentage of patients with a 75% or greater reduction from baseline in the psoriasis area and severity index (PASI 75) score and with a score of 0 or 1 in static physician's global assessment (sPGA) at week 12. RESULTS: The results showed that 50.4% of patients in the benvitimod group achieved PASI 75, which was significantly higher than that in the calcipotriol (38.5%, P < 0.05) and placebo (13.9%, P < 0.05) groups. The proportion of patients achieving an sPGA score 0 or 1 was 66.3% in the benvitimod group and 63.9% in the calcipotriol group, which were both significantly higher than that in the placebo group (34%, P < 0.05). In the long-term follow-up study, 50.8% of patients experienced recurrence. After retreatment with 1% benvitimod, 73.3% of patients achieved an sPGA score of 0 or 1 again at week 52. Adverse events included application site irritation, follicular papules, and contact dermatitis. No systemic adverse reactions were reported. CONCLUSION: During this 12-week study, benvitimod cream was demonstrated with high effectiveness and safety in patients with mild-to-moderate plaque psoriasis. Two new compounds, triacremoniate (1) and dietziamide C (2) along with known compounds ß-Adenosine (3) and acrepyrone A (4) were obtained from the mangrove-derived fungus Acremonium citrinum. MMF4. Their structures were unambiguously determined by extensive spectroscopic methods, including UV, IR, HRESIMS and NMR. Triacremoniate (1) can promote apoptosis of HeLa cells by increasing the PARP cleavage and the phosphorylation of JNK and p38.

The rational structure design and controllable surface modification of electrode materials plays a decisive role in constructing high performance energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, the P-doped cobalt carbonate hydroxide@NiMoO4 (P-CoCH@NiMoO4) nanowires@nanosheets double-shell hierarchical structure is successfully fabricated on nickel foam. The unique nanowire@nanosheet structure with gradient porous distribution and hydrophilic nature can facilitate both the charge and electron transfer based on the synergetic effects with conductive NiMoO4 array. Importantly, the dopant of P element can enrich oxygen vacancies on the surface of CoCH nanowire, thus increase the effective active sites and enhance the electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, when act as the supercapacitor electrode, the bi-functional P-CoCH@NiMoO4/NF material achieves high areal capacitance (5.08 F cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2, 0.75 mAh cm-2) and good cyclic stability (82.7% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles). Meanwhile, when utilize as the hydrogen evolution electrode in alkaline solution, a low overpotential (115 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and Tafel slope (113.5 mV dec-1) can also be achieved.

The development of an efficient electrolyte that combines fast charge transport and high stability for advanced energy devices remains a huge challenge because these two qualities are traded off during the normal design process. Nanostructured liquid crystals have shown potential as efficient charge transport media. However, the reported liquid crystal electrolytes showed limited performance in energy devices probably due to the charge transport barrier at the domain interfaces. Herein, a novel approach was proposed to construct self-assembled long-range charge transport channels in liquid crystal electrolytes by interconnecting the liquid crystal domains via flexible polymer networks. A liquid crystal gel electrolyte was prepared by solidifying a smectic electrolyte using polyethylene oxide (PEO) networks, and applied to improve the performance of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In the gel electrolyte, the smectic assembly formed lamellar nanostructures for charge transport at the intra-domains, while the PEO networks aggregated amorphously at the domain interfaces, acting as bridges to interconnect the smectic domains for charge transport over the inter-domains. Based on the coordination of the smectic assembly and PEO aggregation, the charge transport in the liquid crystal gel electrolyte was greatly improved despite a higher viscosity. Conversely, the photovoltaic efficiency of the DSSC prepared from the liquid crystal gel electrolyte was about two times enhanced, with a champion efficiency of 7.2%, compared with that from the smectic electrolyte without PEO. The liquid crystal gel-based DSSC showed superior stable performance within a wide temperature range from 30 to 70 °C, and stored after 5000 h. Our work here provides a novel and convenient approach to break the trade-off for high-performance electrolytes towards efficient and stable energy devices.

OBJECTIVES: Calcium ion signals are important for osteoclast differentiation. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 6 (TRPV6) is a regulator of bone homeostasis. However, it was unclear whether TRPV6 was involved in osteoclast formation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the role of TPRV6 in bone metabolism and to clarify its regulatory role in osteoclasts at the cellular level. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bone structure and histological changes in Trpv6 knockout mice were examined using micro-computed tomography and histological analyses. To investigate the effects of Trpv6 on osteoclast function, we silenced or overexpressed Trpv6 in osteoclasts via lentivirus transfection, respectively. Osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption viability were measured by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining and pit formation assays. The expression of osteoclast marker genes, including cathepsin k, DC-STAMP, Atp6v0d2 and TRAP, was measured by qRT-PCR. Cell immunofluorescence and Western blotting were applied to explore the mechanisms by which the IGF-PI3K-AKT pathway was involved in the regulation of osteoclast formation and bone resorption by Trpv6. RESULTS: We found that knockout of Trpv6 induced osteoporosis and enhanced bone resorption in mice, but did not affect bone formation. Further studies showed that Trpv6, which was distributed on the cell membrane of osteoclasts, acted as a negative regulator for osteoclast differentiation and function. Mechanistically, Trpv6 suppressed osteoclastogenesis by decreasing the ratios of phosphoprotein/total protein in the IGF-PI3K-AKT signalling pathway. Blocking of the IGF-PI3K-AKT pathway significantly alleviated the inhibitory effect of Trpv6 on osteoclasts formation. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirmed the important role of Trpv6 in bone metabolism and clarified its regulatory role in osteoclasts at the cellular level. Taken together, this study may inspire a new strategy for the treatment of osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of patients with ventral abdominal wall defects, especially complex abdominal wall defects, remains a challenging problem for abdominal wall reconstructive surgeons. Effective surgical treatment requires appropriate preoperative assessment, surgical planning, and correct operative procedure in order to improve postoperative clinical outcomes and minimize complications. Although substantial advances have been made in surgical techniques and prosthetic technologies, there is still insufficient high-level evidence favoring a specific technique. Broad variability in existing practice patterns, including clinical pre-operative evaluation, surgical techniques and surgical procedure selection, are still common. DATA SOURCES: With the purpose of providing a best practice algorithm, a comprehensive search was conducted in Medline and PubMed. Sixty-four surgeons considered as experts on abdominal wall defect repair and reconstruction in China were solicited to develop a Chinese consensus and give recommendations to help surgeons standardize their techniques and improve clinical results. CONCLUSIONS: This consensus serves as a starting point to provide recommendations for adult ventral abdominal wall repair and reconstruction in China and may help build opportunities for international cooperation to refine AWR practice.

BACKGROUND: Systematic investigation and analysis of cardiovascular health status (CVHS) of Chinese women is rare. This study aimed to assess CVHS and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) burden in the Chinese women physicians (CWP) and community-based non-physician cohort (NPC). METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter, observational study, CVHS using the American Heart Association (AHA) defined 7 metrics (such as smoking and fasting glucose) and ASCVD risk factors including hypertension, hyperlipidemia and type-2 diabetes were evaluated in CWP compared with NPC. RESULTS: Of 5832 CWP with a mean age of 44 ± 7 years, only 1.2% achieved the ideal CVHS and 90.1% showed at least 1 of the 7 AHA CVHS metrics at a poor level. Total CVHS score was significantly decreased and ASCVD risk burden was increased in postmenopausal subjects in CWP although ideal CVHS was not significantly influenced by menopause. Compared to 2596 NPC, fewer CWP had ≥ 2 risk factors (8% vs. 27%, P < 0.001); CWP scored significantly higher on healthy factors, a composite of total cholesterol, blood pressure, fasting glucose (P < 0.001), but, poorly on healthy behaviors (P < 0.001), specifically in the physical activity component; CWP also showed significantly higher levels of awareness and rates of treatment for hypertension and hyperlipidemia, but, not for type-2 diabetes. CONCLUSION: Chinese women's cardiovascular health is far from ideal and risk intervention is sub-optimal. Women physicians had lower ASCVD burden, scored higher in healthy factors, but, took part in less physical activity than the non-physician cohort. These results call for population-specific early and improved risk intervention.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to prospectively recruit patients treated with limb malformation and to explore the prevalence and the clinical and epidemiological features of Heart-Hand Syndrome (HHS) in China. METHODS: The consecutive patients treated for congenital upper limb malformation in Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital from October 1st, 2016 to October 1st, 2019 were prospectively recruited. We reviewed the patients' medical records and identified patients with abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) and/or abnormal ultrasonic cardiogram as well as their basic demographic and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: A total 1653 (1053 male and 600 female) patients with congenital upper extremity malformations were prospectively recruited. Among them, 200 (12.1%) had abnormal ultrasonic cardiogram (181patients, 10.9%) and/or abnormal ECG (19 patients, 1.1%). The commonest type of abnormal heart structure was atrial septal defect (69/181 38.1%), and the commonest abnormal ECG was wave patterns (7/19, 36.8%). HHS patients had a higher comorbidity rate (11%) than non-HHS patients (6.9%). Patients with HHS were classified into four groups by the types of congenital upper extremity malformations, among which the most common group was thumb type (121/200, 60.5%). CONCLUSIONS: HHS occurred frequently among patients with congenital upper extremity malformation in China, particularly for those with multiple congenital malformations. The commonest type of hand malformations of HHS patients was thumb malformation.

The mixed-ligand strategy is one of the important methods for preparing new materials and regulating the properties of materials. In this work, by introducing different auxiliary ligands (ALs), we have obtained a series of mixed-ligand uranyl complexes (1-6) from a flexible biphenyltetracarboxylic acid (H4bptc) with an adjustable orthogonal conformation and studied the influence of different organic base molecules on the coordination and assembly of H4bptc with a uranyl cation. It is found that the coordinated ALs, including 4,4'-bipyridine-1,1'-dioxide and 1,10-phenanthroline, partially occupy the coordination sites of the uranyl center and directly affect the molecular conformations and uranyl coordination of flexible bptc linkers. On the other hand, noncoordinated ALs such as protonated 4,4'-bipyridine ([H2(4,4'-bpy)]2+) or dimethylammonium, which work as counterions in the form of encapsulated guests or hydrogen-bonded templates, also have a nonnegligible impact on the conformation and coordination of bptc linkers. Most interestingly, the AL-mediated evolution of uranyl coordination by the bptc linker and coordination geometry of the uranyl center is clearly observed, which suggests the adaptability of flexible bptc linkers to take suitable molecular configurations and uranyl coordination modes so as to adapt to the external regulator agents and varying environment. The physicochemical characterization of these uranyl compounds, especially photoluminescence, is addressed and discussed, and the results reveal that compound 5 has the potential to serve as a multifunctional radiation detection material for UV light and X-ray radiation.
