RESUMO

Very recently, we introduced a set of correlation consistent effective core potentials (ccECPs) constructed within full many-body approaches. By employing significantly more accurate correlated approaches we were able to reach a new level of accuracy for the resulting effective core Hamiltonians. We also strived for simplicity of use and easy transferability into a variety of electronic structure methods in quantum chemistry and condensed matter physics. Here, as a reference for future use, we present exact or nearly-exact total energy calculations for these ccECPs. The calculations cover H-Kr elements and are based on the state-of-the-art configuration interaction (CI), coupled-cluster (CC), and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations with systematically eliminated/improved errors. In particular, we carry out full CI/CCSD(T)/CCSDT(Q) calculations with cc-pVnZ with up to n=6 basis sets and we estimate the complete basis set limits. Using combinations of these approaches, we achieved an accuracy of ≈ 1-10 mHa for K-Zn atoms and ≈ 0.1-0.3 mHa for all other elements - within about 1% or better of the ccECP total correlation energies. We also estimate the corresponding kinetic energies within the feasible limit of full CI calculations. In order to provide data for QMC calculations, we include fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo energies for each element that give quantitative insights into the fixed-node biases for single-reference trial wave functions. The results offer a clear benchmark for future high accuracy calculations in a broad variety of correlated wave function methods such as CI and CC as well is in stochastic approaches such as real space sampling QMC.

INTRODUCTION: Acute hydrocephalus is a common complication of spontaneous or traumatic intracranial bleeding with extensive subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) or ventricular extension. However, it has never been reported to be secondary to pneumocephalus. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old man was admitted following a motorcycle accident. Head computed tomography (CT) performed right after the accident revealed a skull base fracture and mild perimesencephalic SAH. Three days later, repeated CT revealed delayed perimesencephalic pneumocephalus and an evident enlargement of the ventricular system. DIAGNOSIS: The patient was diagnosed with acute obstructive hydrocephalus, which was secondary to pneumocephalus and traumatic SAH. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with temporary external ventricular drainage (EVD). OUTCOMES: The patient experienced an unremarkable recovery process. At follow-up 3 months later, he showed no recurrence of the hydrocephalus and the score of Glasgow Outcome Scale was 5. CONCLUSION: Transient mechanical obstruction of CSF circulation and disturbance of CSF physiology might conjointly lead to the acute obstructive hydrocephalus.

Rearrangement of the mixed lineage leukemia (MLL; also known as lysine methyltransferase 2A) gene is a recurrent genomic aberration in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). MLLT3, super elongation complex subunit (AF9) is one of the most common MLL fusion partners in AML. The present study aimed to explore the aberrant expression of genes associated with the MLL­AF9 translocation and identified potential new targets for the therapy of AML with MLL­AF9 translocation. The transcriptomic and epigenetic datasets were downloaded from National Center of Biotechnology Information Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes were obtained from two independent datasets (GSE68643 and GSE73457). Gene Ontology biological process and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis was performed using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery. MLL­AF9­associated chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP­Seq) data was analyzed and identified binding sites for MLL­AF9 and wild type MLL (MLL WT). The ChIP­Seq of histone modification data was downloaded from the GEO database, including histone 3 lysine 4 trimethylation (H3K4me3), histone 3 lysine 79 dimethylation (H3K79me2) and histone 3 lysine 27 acetylation (H3K27ac), was used for comparing histone modification marks between the MLL­AF9 leukemia cells and normal hematopoietic cells at MLL­AF9 and MLL WT binding sites. The differentially expressed genes with the same trend in H3K79me2, H3K27ac and H3K4me3 alteration were identified as potential MLL­AF9 direct target genes. Upon validation using RNA­Seq data from the Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments AML project, eight potential direct target genes of MLL­AF9 were identified and further confirmed in MLL­AF9 mouse model using reverse transcription­quantitative polymerase chain reaction. These genes may have a critical role in AML with MLL­AF9 translocation.

Owing to the excellent electrical conductivity and high theoretical capacity, binary transition metal sulfides have attracted extensive attention as promising anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the relatively poor electrical conductivity and serious capacity fading originated from large volume change still hinder their practical applications. Herein, binary NiMoS4 nanoparticles are deposited on N doped carbon nanosheets (NC@NiMoS4) through a facile hydrothermal method. The N doped carbon nanosheets and the strong chemical bonding between NC and NiMoS4 can accommodate the volume change, keep the structural integrity and promote the ion/electron transfer during electrochemical reaction. The extra voids between NiMoS4 nanoparticles enlarge the contact area and reduce the lithium migration barriers. As anode for LIBs, the NC@NiMoS4 exhibits the excellent cycle stability with 834 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at the current density of 100 mA g-1. Even at high rate of 2000 mA g-1, the specific capacity of 544 mAh g-1 can be achieved after 500 cycles.

RATIONALE: Brain arteriovenous malformation (BAVM)-associated varix is always asymptomatic, and no special treatment is needed. However, there is no consensus regarding how to address a varix that has led to clinical manifestation. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 11-year-old girl was admitted complaining of left hemiparesis for 4 days. She was previously healthy and denied any history of similar ictus. She was alert, and a physical examination performed upon admission was unremarkable except for the left hemiparesis. DIAGNOSES: Head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a linear and round flow void and perilesional edema in the region of the right basal ganglia, indicating a BAVM. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI showed peripheral enhancement of the round lesion. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed that the BAVM was fed by the ipsilateral posterior cerebral artery and anterior choroidal artery and drained into the vein of Galen. A large varix was also noted at the top of the BAVM and was consistent with the round flow void observed at the right basal ganglia on MRI. The Spetzler-Martin grading scale was grade IV INTERVENTIONS:: The patient experienced a TAE of the BAVM nidus with liquid embolic agent. OUTCOMES: A follow-up investigation showed regression of the varix, although there was still some residual BAVM. The patient experienced a favorable recovery. LESSONS: In the case of a BAVM-associated symptomatic varix, if surgical resection cannot readily be performed, initial TAE of the BAVM nidus can be attempted.

Absorbers have potential applications in the stealth field. However, limited bandwidth and low absorption rate persist in existing methods. Moreover, absorbers working in the low frequency range (1-4 GHz) with small size are much more difficult to realize. In this paper, we propose a novel absorption structure, which combines indium tin oxide film and metal resonator. The former realizes impedance matching with free space in a broad bandwidth at moderate frequency range while the latter shows the resonant property at low frequency. Based on this absorption structure, we design the zigzag-shaped structure to realize high-efficiency and ultra-broadband absorption. To demonstrate the feasibility of our method, we fabricate a sample and perform measurements. The measurement results show that our sample can achieve ultra-broadband absorption with high-efficiency of over 90% from 1 GHz to 18 GHz, which is in good agreement with simulation results. Our findings provide a valuable technique for broadband device design, which could bring about a wide range of applications in cloaking technology.

Recently, we developed a new method for generating effective core potentials (ECPs) using valence energy isospectrality with explicitly correlated all-electron (AE) excitations and norm-conservation criteria. We apply this methodology to the 3rd-row main group elements, creating new correlation consistent ECPs (ccECPs) and also deriving additional ECPs to complete the ccECP table for H-Kr. For K and Ca, we develop Ne-core ECPs, and for the 4p main group elements, we construct [Ar]3d10-core potentials. Scalar relativistic effects are included in their construction. Our ccECPs reproduce AE spectra with significantly better accuracy than many existing pseudopotentials and show better overall consistency across multiple properties. The transferability of ccECPs is tested on monohydride and monoxide molecules over a range of molecular geometries. For the constructed ccECPs, we also provide optimized DZ-6Z valence Gaussian basis sets.

Multi-functional metasurfaces have exhibited powerful abilities of manipulating electromagnetic (EM) wave in predetermined manners, largely improving their information capacities. However, most works are implemented with EM functions controlled by one of the intrinsic properties of EM wave, such as polarization, frequency, etc. Herein, we propose a coding scheme to design a broadband and high-efficient multi-functional metasurface independently controlled by both frequency and polarization. To achieve this goal, we design anisotropic coding particles to realize independent phase functions and polarization-selectivity in the microwave region. Meta-atoms are finally optimized to exhibit 2-bit phase responses insensitive to incident polarization in the X-band while showing a 1-bit phase shift sensitive to incident polarization in the Ku-band. As a proof of concept, a metasurface is configured as an isotropic lens in the X-band, whereas the metasurface is designed as an anisotropic beam deflector in the Ku-band with or without polarization-conversion functionality dependent on the input polarization. The measured results, which agree well with the simulated ones, show excellent performances in the designed dual bands. Such a multi-functional coding metasurface may provide a flexible and robust approach to manipulate EM wave of multiple frequencies, as well as to integrate diverse functionalities into a single flat device.

In humans, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) adopt unique responsive pathways counteracting with the DNA-damaging assaults to weigh the balance between the maintenance of normal stem cell poor for whole-life blood regeneration and the transformation to leukemia stem cells (LSCs) for leukemia initiation. LSCs also take actions of combating with the attack launched by externally therapeutic drugs that can kill most leukemic cells, to avoid extermination and promote disease relapse. Therefore, the collection of knowledge about all these underlined mechanisms would present a preponderance for later studies. In this chapter, the universal DNA damage response (DDR) mechanisms were firstly introduced, and then DDR of HSCs were presented focusing on the DNA double-strand breaks in the quiescent state of HSCs, which poses a big advantage in promoting its transformation into preleukemic HSCs. Lastly, the DDR of LSCs were summarized based on the major outcomes triggered by different pathways in specific leukemia, upon which some aspects for future investigations were envisioned under our currently limited scope of knowledge.

The cardiac mechanosensitive BK (Slo1) channels are gated by Ca2+, voltage, and membrane stretch. The neuropeptide GsMTx4 is a selective inhibitor of mechanosensitive (MS) channels. It has been reported to suppress stretch-induced cardiac fibrillation in the heart, but the mechanism underlying the specificity and even the targeting channel(s) in the heart remain elusive. Here, we report that GsMTx4 inhibits a stretch-activated BK channel (SAKcaC) in the heart through a modulation specific to mechano-gating. We show that membrane stretching increases while GsMTx4 decreases the open probability (P o) of SAKcaC. These effects were mostly abolished by the deletion of the STREX axis-regulated (STREX) exon located between RCK1 and RCK2 domains in BK channels. Single-channel kinetics analysis revealed that membrane stretch activates SAKcaC by prolonging the open-time duration (τO) and shortening the closed-time constant (τC). In contrast, GsMTx4 reversed the effects of membrane stretch, suggesting that GsMTx4 inhibits SAKcaC activity by interfering with mechano-gating of the channel. Moreover, GsMTx4 exerted stronger efficacy on SAKcaC under membrane-hyperpolarized/resting conditions. Molecular dynamics simulation study revealed that GsMTx4 appeared to have the ability to penetrate deeply within the bilayer, thus generating strong membrane deformation under the hyperpolarizing/resting conditions. Immunostaining results indicate that BK variants containing STREX are also expressed in mouse ventricular cardiomyocytes. Our results provide common mechanisms of peptide actions on MS channels and may give clues to therapeutic suppression of cardiac arrhythmias caused by excitatory currents through MS channels under hyper-mechanical stress in the heart.

Medical implantation of an electrocorticography (ECoG) recording system for brain monitoring is an effective clinical tool for seizure focus location and brain disease diagnosis. Planar and flexible ECoG electrodes can minimize the risks of infection and serious inflammatory response, and their good shape adaptability allows the device to fit complex cortex shape and structure to record brain signals with high spatial and temporal resolution. However, these ECoG electrodes require an additional surgery to remove the implant, which imposes potential medical risks. Here, a novel flexible and bioresorbable ECoG device integrated with an intracortical pressure sensor for monitoring swelling of the cortex during operation is reported. The ECoG device is fabricated with poly(l-lactide) and polycaprolactone composite and transient metal molybdenum. In vivo tests on rats show that the ECoG system can record the dynamic changes in brain signals for the different epilepsy stages with high resolution, while the malleable pressure sensor shows a linear relationship between the pressure and resistance in in vitro tests. In vitro degradation experiments show that the ECoG system can work stably for about five days before loss of efficacy, and the whole ECoG system degrades completely in a phosphate buffer solution in about 100 days.

The posterior meningeal artery, which arises from the vertebral artery, is a critical artery in neurological lesions. However, a comprehensive review of the importance of the posterior meningeal artery is currently lacking. In this study, we used the PubMed database to perform a review of the literature on the posterior meningeal artery to increase our understanding of its role in vascular lesions. The posterior meningeal artery provides the main blood supply to the paramedial and medial portions of the dura covering the cerebellar convexity. The posterior meningeal artery is often involved in dural arteriovenous fistulas occurring near the posterior fossa, and the posterior meningeal artery can be the path for transarterial embolisation or a path through which to monitor the degree of dural arteriovenous fistula embolisation. In posterior circulation ischaemia and moyamoya disease, the posterior meningeal artery can form transdural anastomoses with pial arteries at the surface of the brain, and these can help prevent ischemia. The posterior meningeal artery can also develop aneurysms, most of which are traumatic pseudoaneurysms; patients should therefore be treated in a timely manner or followed up carefully in cases of rebleeding. In addition, during a craniotomy, the posterior meningeal artery should be protected intraoperatively to avoid damaging any transdural anastomosis that may be present. In addition, when the posterior meningeal artery is the main feeding artery of an intracranial tumour, that artery is a satisfactory path for preoperative embolisation. Briefly, the posterior meningeal artery is a very important artery in neurosurgery.

RATIONALE: Intermuscular hemangioma (IH) usually occurs in the muscles of the limbs and trunk, but can rarely occur in the occipital region. IH in the occipital region is easily misdiagnosed as arteriovenous malformation (AVM). PATIENT CONCERNS: A 31-year-old woman had a right occipital mass for 5 months without pulsation. DIAGNOSIS: Head computered tomography angiography (CTA) and digital substraction angiography (DSA) examinations showed that the lesion was mainly vascular, approximately 3 × 5 cm in size, and supplied by occipital arteries and the muscular branches of vertebral arteries. The venous drainage of the lesions communicated with the suboccipital vein plexus and the paravertebral vein in the venous phase, indicating AVM. Postoperative histological investigation showed the lesion was a hemangioma. INTERVENTIONS: It was recommended for surgical removal. The surgery was carried out under general anesthesia. The lesion showed a clear boundary. The occipital artery touched the anterior margin of the lesion, was exposed and ligated, and was removed around the lesion. The lesion consisted of massive blood vessels, and the surrounding muscles were swollen, indicating IH.After the lesion was removed, the normal muscle tissue around the lesion was also removed. OUTCOMES: The patient achieved a good recovery after surgery, and pathology confirmed IH. A postoperative 1-year CTA review was performed and showed partial residual, then the radiotherapy was recommended. She refused further radiotherapy, follow-up 2 years later showed no enlargement of the lesion. LESSONS: Although IH rarely occurs in the occipital region, this can occur. Due to the complexity of the drainage veins in the occipital region, these IH are prone to misdiagnosis as AVM.

Achieving asymmetric transmission effects, especially in an ultra-broadband frequency region, is of particular importance in communication systems. Currently available asymmetric transmission metasurfaces are limited to narrow bands and low efficiencies because of the inherently dispersion effects and large transmission fluctuations. In this paper, we propose a new strategy to realize high efficiency and ultra-broadband asymmetric transmission in an ultra-thin profile by using the topologically coding optimization method. The meta-atom consists of two outer orthogonal gratings and a central lattice particle optimized by genetic algorithm. The optimized central lattice suppresses the transmission fluctuations by tuning the coupling among different metallic layers, resulting in very broad band and high transmissions. Experimental results show that our metasurface achieved perfect reflection over 95% and high cross-polarization transmission over 80% for y- and x-polarized incidence from 5.3 GHz to 16.7 GHz, respectively. Our findings pave a way to high-performance and broadband polarization transformers and polarization-controlled devices working in different frequency domains.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an aging-related degenerative disorder arisen from the loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra. Although many genetic mutations have been implicated to be genetically linked to PD, the low incidence of familial PD carried with mutations suggests that there must be other factors such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, accumulation of misfolded proteins, and enhanced inflammation, which are contributable to the pathophysiology of PD. The major efforts of current research have been devoted to unravel the toxic effect of multiple factors, which directly cause the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in adulthood. Until recently, several studies have demonstrated that NSCs had compromised proliferation and differentiation capacity in PD animal models or PD patient-derived iPS models, suggesting that the pathology of PD may be rooted in some cellular aberrations at early developmental stage but the mechanism remains to be elusive. Based on the early-onset PD patient-specific iPSCs, we found that PD-patient iPSC-derived NSCs were more susceptible to stress and became functionally compromised by radiation or oxidative insults. We further unraveled that stress-induced SIRT1 downregulation leading to autophagic dysfunction, which were responsible for these deficits in PD-NSCs. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that stress-induced activation of p38 MAPK suppressed SIRT1 expression, which in turn augmented the acetylation of multiple ATG proteins of autophagic complex and eventually led to autophagic deficits. Our studies suggest that early developmental deficits may, at least partially, contribute to the pathology of PD and provide a new avenue for developing better therapeutic interventions to PD.

Achieving simultaneous polarization and wavefront control, especially circular polarization with the auxiliary degree of freedom of light and spin angular momentum, is of fundamental importance in many optical applications. Interferences are typically undesirable in highly integrated photonic circuits and metasurfaces. Here, we propose an interference-assisted metasurface-multiplexer (meta-plexer) that counterintuitively exploits constructive and destructive interferences between hybrid meta-atoms and realizes independent spin-selective wavefront manipulation. Such kaleidoscopic meta-plexers are experimentally demonstrated via two types of single-layer spin-wavefront multiplexers that are composed of spatially rotated anisotropic meta-atoms. One type generates a spin-selective Bessel-beam wavefront for spin-down light and a low scattering cross-section for stealth for spin-up light. The other type demonstrates versatile control of the vortex wavefront, which is also characterized by the orbital angular momentum of light, with frequency-switchable numbers of beams under linearly polarized wave excitation. Our findings offer a distinct interference-assisted concept for realizing advanced multifunctional photonics with arbitrary and independent spin-wavefront features. A variety of applications can be readily anticipated in optical diodes, isolators, and spin-Hall meta-devices without cascading bulky optical elements.

Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is a rare and severe brain disorder that is associated with unilateral hemispheric atrophy and manifests as severe refractory epilepsy, hemiplegia, defects of motor and speech functions, and cognitive impairment. Treatment of RE, especially in adult patients, is extremely challenging. Herein, we report the case of an adult patient with RE who was treated with a functional hemispherectomy and achieved a favorable prognosis. A 29-year-old woman presented with a 24-year history of epileptic seizures. Neurological examination showed hemiplegia, homonymous hemianopsia, and right muscular atrophy. Neuropsychological examination demonstrated cognitive disorders. Serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans showed progressive encephalatrophy in the left hemisphere and ventriculomegaly in the left lateral ventricle. The Wada test showed that the right hemisphere was dominant for language. A functional hemispherectomy was performed. Postoperatively, no antiepileptic drugs were administered, and the patient remained seizure-free without aggravation of hemiplegia. Over a 2-year follow-up, cognitive functions improved. In an adult patient with RE, a favorable prognosis was achieved after functional hemispherectomy. The safety and efficacy of functional hemispherectomy in patients with RE is highlighted.

OBJECTIVE: Continuous measurement of key physiological parameters, such as heart rate (HR), pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2), and sweat pH value, has very broad applications in healthcare, disease surveillance, and fitness and sports training. In this study, a stretchable optical sensing patch system was developed for real-time continuous noninvasive monitoring of the HR, SpO2, and sweat pH, and the sensing data were transmitted to a smartphone through Bluetooth. METHODS: The sensor patch system adopted serpentine stretchable interconnects between the optical sensor and microcontroller chip with wireless function on a flexible substrate. The pH sensing function was implemented by coating a pH sensitive organically modified silicate film on the surface of a commercial blood oxygen sensor, achieving simultaneous measurement of HR, SpO2, and sweat pH with a single sensor. RESULTS: Real-time on-body assessment was carried out to evaluate the sensor patch system, showing its excellent repeatability and applicability. The sensor patch system could withstand up to 35% extension and exhibited a pH sensitivity of 4.42 mV/pH from 4.0 to 8.0, while the accuracy of HR from 25 to 250 b/min and SpO2 from 70% to 100% sensing were ±1 b/min and ±2%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The triple sensing functions was achieved through a single optical sensor on a flexible substrate while holding excellent contact with the body. SIGNIFICANCE: The sensor patch system can be used for fitness guidance, skin disease detection, and wound monitoring and management by replacing related sensitive films.

RATIONALE: Iatrogenic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea in a bilateral frontal decompressive craniectomy patient triggered by strenuous sport is rare. To the best of our knowledge, no similar case has yet been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, we report a case of CSF rhinorrhea in a 37-year-old man. He had previously suffered a traumatic brain injury in a traffic accident, and a subsequent bilateral frontal decompressive craniectomy operation was performed. Based on the frontal skull defect peculiarity, strenuous exercise may have caused drastic CSF pressure waves to tear the dura mater of the anterior skull base, resulting in CSF rhinorrhea. DIAGNOSES: The thin-slice computerized tomography (CT) images revealed a frontal skull defect and the open frontal sinus. In addition, in the opened frontal sinus, low-density liquid-filled areas were visible. INTERVENTIONS: During surgery, the torn dura was carefully repaired, and the frontal sinus was filled with temporal muscle, fascia, and fibrin glue. A simultaneous cranioplasty was performed. OUTCOMES: The patient was followed-up postoperatively for 12 months to date without rhinorrhea recurrence. Recovery was uneventful. LESSONS: Patients with skull defects should avoid strenuous sports, and cranioplasty should be performed as early as possible in order to decrease the likelihood of a dural tear and prevent the occurrence of CSF leakage. After cranioplasty, the skull should be restored to a closed state to reduce the damaging effects of CSF waves during movement. It is important to maintain normal intracranial pressure to reduce the recurrence rate of CSF rhinorrhea.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (T-ALL) [corrected] is an aggressive disease which is highly resistant to chemotherapy. Studies show that enhanced ability of DNA damage repair (DDR) in cancer cells plays a key role in chemotherapy resistance. Here, we suggest that defect in DDR related genes might be a promising target to destroy the genome stability of tumor cells. METHODS: Since KU70 is highly expressed in Jurkat cells, one of the most representative cell lines of ATL, we knocked down KU70 by shRNA and analyzed the impact of KU70 deficiency in Jurkat cells as well as in NOD-SCID animal models by western blot, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry and measuring DNA repair efficiency. RESULTS: It is observed that silencing of KU70 resulted in accumulated DNA damage and impaired DDR in Jurkat cells, resulting in more apoptosis, decreased cell proliferation and cell cycle arrest. DNA damage leads to DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), which are processed by either non-homologous end joining(NHEJ) or homologous recombination(HR). In our study, both NHEJ and HR are impaired because of KU70 defect, accompanied with increased protein level of SHP-1, a dephosphorylation enzyme. In turn, SHP-1 led to dephosphorylation of SIRT1, which further impaired HR repair efficiency. Moreover, KU70 deficiency prolonged survival of Jurkat-xenografted mice. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that targeting KU70 is a promising target for ATL and might overcome the existing difficulties in chemotherapy.
