RESUMO

Hierarchical composite films grown on current collectors are popularly reported to be directly used as electrodes for supercapacitors. Highly dense and conductive NiCo2O4 nanowires are ideal backbones to support guest materials. In this work, low crystalline MnO2 nanoflakes are electrodeposited onto the surface of NiCo2O4 nanowire films pre-coated on nickel foam. Each building block in the composite films is a NiCo2O4-MnO2 core-shell nanowire on conductive nickel foam. Due to the co-presence of MnO2 and NiCo2O4, the MnO2@NiCo2O4@Ni electrode exhibits higher specific capacitance and larger working voltage than the NiCo2O4@Ni electrode. It can have a high specific capacitance of 1186 F·g-1 at 1 A·g-1. When the core-shell NiCo2O4-MnO2 composite and activated carbon are assembled as a hybrid capacitor, it has the highest energy density of 29.6 Wh·kg-1 at a power density of 425 W·kg-1 with an operating voltage of 1.7 V. This work shows readers an easy method to synthesize composite films for energy storage.

This study aimed to explore the structural and functional characteristics of the neural network of resting-state brain activities in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology. Resting state fMRI scanning was performed on 10 clinically diagnosed aMCI patients and 10 healthy volunteers, and the difference in the resting-state brain activities between aMCI patients and healthy volunteers was compared using the brain function network regional homogeneity (ReHo) analysis method. Results of the ReHo analysis of aMCI patients and healthy volunteers revealed that the ReHo value significantly increased in the posterior cingulate gyrus region, medial frontal lobe, medial cortex of the prefrontal lobe, and part of the parietal lobe. Compared with the normal elderlies, ReHo decreased in aMCI patients in the left temporal lobe (middle temporal gyrus and inferior temporal gyrus), left parahippocampal gyrus, occipital lobe, lingual gyrus, precuneus, and other regions while ReHo increased in regions of the right frontal lobe (inferior frontal gyrus), left superior temporal gyrus, precentral gyrus (frontal lobe), right thalamus, left fusiform gyrus, and other regions. In the resting state, there may be regional abnormalities in brain functional areas in aMCI patients, which may be associated with cognitive impairment.

Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of transcatheter hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) with those of sorafenib in the treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage C. Methods: Potentially relevant studies comparing the clinical efficacy and safety of HAIC with those of sorafenib were searched using Medline, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Chinese databases (Wanfang Data and China National Knowledge Infrastructure). Overall survival rate (OSR), tumor response rate, disease control rate (DCR), and serious adverse events (SAEs) were compared and analyzed. Pooled ORs with 95% CIs were calculated using either the fixed-effects model or the random-effects model. All statistical analyses were conducted using Review Manager (version 5.3) from the Cochrane Collaboration. Results: A total of 1,264 patients were included in this meta-analysis. The results of this study showed that HAIC was associated with significantly higher 1-, 2-, and 3-year OSRs than sorafenib (OR 1.88, 95% CI1-year: [1.27-2.78], P1-year=0.002; OR 2.15, 95% CI2-year: [1.06-4.37], P2-year=0.03; OR 7.90, 95% CI3-year: [2.12-29.42], P3-year=0.002). Compared to sorafenib, HAIC was associated with superior complete response (CR), partial response (PR), and objective response rate (ORR) (OR 3.90, 95% CICR: [1.89-8.03], P CR =0.0002; OR 3.47, 95% CIPR: [2.31-5.24], P PR <0.00001; OR 3.02, 95% CIOR: [2.05-4.45], P OR <0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference between HAIC and sorafenib in stable disease (SD), progressive disease (PD), DCR, and SAEs (OR 0.86, 95% CISD: [0.51-1.45], P SD =0.56; OR 0.62, 95% CIPD: [0.35-1.11], P PD =0.11; OR 0.53, 95% CISAE: [0.14-1.92], P SAE =0.33). Conclusion: This study showed that HAIC was associated with better efficacy than sorafenib in terms of OSR and tumor response. Therefore, HAIC can be considered as an alternative treatment option for patients with HCCs of BCLC stage C.

Different types of sulfur compounds, namely S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC), S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (ACSO) and a synthetic γ-L-glutamyl-S-allyl-L-cysteine (GSAC) were extracted from black garlic and their inhibition to the advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) were investigated. Upon addition of inhibitor, the amount of produced fructosamine was determined by UV visible spectroscopy. The change of pentosidine and fluorescent AGEs during reaction was detected by fluorescence method and the change of carboxymethyl lysine (CML) was detected by high performance liquid chromatography. It was found that the inhibitory effects of SAC and ACSO are stronger to the early and mid non-fluorescent products in glycosylation reaction, and GSAC has an obvious inhibitory effect on the later reaction products. All these three inhibitors can effectively inhibit advanced glycation reaction. Although their effects on glycation products are different due to different chemical structures, they have similar inhibitory effects on fluorescent products.

Background: In this study, we aimed to assess the clinical utility of detection of plasma microRNAs (miRNAs) in the diagnosis of pulmonary nodules. Methods: Fifty-seven patients with pulmonary nodules who had undergone surgery were enrolled in our study from July 2016 to July 2017 at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. We measured the expression levels of 12 miRNAs (miRNA-17, -146a, -200b, -182, -155, -221, -205, -126, -7, -21, -145, and miRNA-210) in plasma samples of 57 patients, including 15 benign pulmonary nodules patients and 42 malignant pulmonary nodules patients. The levels of these miRNAs were detected by Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to assess the diagnostic performance of plasma miRNAs for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Results: The expression levels of plasma miRNA-17, -146a, -200b, -182, -155, -221, -205, -126, -7, -21, -145, and miRNA-210 are not associated with gender, age, pTNM stage, differentiation grade. The levels of miRNA-17, -146a, -200b, -182, -221, -205, -7, -21, -145, and miRNA-210 in NSCLC patients are significantly higher than those in benign pulmonary nodules patients (P<0.05). However, there are no significant differences for the expression levels of miRNA-155 and miRNA-126. For diagnosing NSCLC, the sensitivity and specificity was 66.7% and 80.0% for miRNA-17, 54.8% and 86.7% for miRNA-146a, 64.3% and 86.7% for miRNA-200b, 83.3% and 73.3% for miRNA-182, 54.8% and 80.0% for miRNA-221, 73.8% and 80.0% for miRNA-205, 78.6% and 73.3% for miRNA-7, 78.6% and 60.0% for miRNA-21, 78.6% and 73.3% for miRNA-145, 76.2% and 73.3% for miRNA-210. Conclusions: Plasma miRNAs (miRNA-17, -146a, -200b, -182, -221, -205, -7, -21, -145, and miRNA-210) have relatively high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of NSCLC. These plasma miRNAs may be the potential biomarkers for early diagnosis of lung cancer.

The sucrose nonfermenting 1 (SNF1)-related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) genes play central roles in plant stress signal transduction. In this study, 8 SnRK2 genes were identified from the tea plant genome database and named CsSnRK2.1-8. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the CsSnRK2 genes were classifiable into three groups, similar to those of Arabidopsis thaliana, Oryza sativa and maize. The coding sequences (CDSs) of all CsSnRK2s were separated by eight introns, and their exon-intron organizations exhibited high similarity to those of other plants. The fluorescence of GFP fused with CsSnRK2.3 was detected in only the cytoplasm, while the rest of the proteins showed GFP signal in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The results of the expression patterns of the CsSnRK2 genes showed that CsSnRK2s were differentially induced by salt, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and abscisic acid (ABA) stress. Interestingly, The expression of CsSnRK2.3 was inhibited by ABA, suggesting the complicated roles of CsSnRK2s in the ABA signal transduction pathway. Some CsSnRK2 gene pairs showed significant expression change correlations under stresses, indicating that CsSnRK2s might exhibit synergistic effects of signal regulation in response to various stresses. In summary, this comprehensive analysis will facilitate further studies of the SnRK2 family of Camellia sinensis and provide useful information for the functional validation of CsSnRK2s.

To improve the quality of the tailings water from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), a denitrification biofilter (DNBF) with a composite filler composed of a new slow-release organic-carbon source (SOC-F), sponge iron, and activated carbon was tested. Studies were conducted in the combined process of DNBF-O3-GAC to explore the efficiency of the advanced removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, and microbial metabolite by using synthetic effluent made from running water and chemicals. Corresponding comparative studies were conducted by using the secondary effluent from the WWTP. The microbial population structure in the biofilm of the denitrification biofilter was analyzed by adopting MiSeq high-throughput sequencing technologies. The results indicated that the combination process achieved high efficiency removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, and microbial metabolite. The average removal rate of NO3--N in the simulated and actual water period reached 88.87% and 79.99%, respectively; the average removal rate of TP reached 87.67% and 65.51%, respectively; and the average removal rate of UV254 reached 45.51% and 49.23%, respectively. Each processing unit had different functions. The changes in NO3--N, TN, TP, and TFe mainly occurred in the denitrification biofilter, and the removal of UV254 and the change in the three-dimensional fluorescence intensity mainly occurred in the ozone-activated carbon reactor. The cluster analysis at the genus level indicated that the denitrification system had sulfur autotrophic denitrifying bacteria and heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria. Sulfur autotrophic denitrification increased obviously in the actual water period when relatively lack of carbon sources, and the proportion of Thiobacillus increased from 7.44% to 29.62%. The complementary effect of sulfur autotrophic denitrification and heterotrophic denitrification had extended the use of the new slow-release carbon source.

Objective: To meta-analytically compare combined transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and surgical resection (SR) for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within the Milan criteria. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies comparing these two therapies that were published between January 2006 and August 2017. Overall survival rate (OS), recurrence-free survival rate (RFS), major complications and the average length of hospital stay were compared between these two therapies. Meta-analytic pooled odds ratio (OR) was calculated using TACE plus RFA as the base category. Results: Seven case-control studies and one randomized trial were identified. Meta-analytic results revealed that, compared with SR, TACE plus RFA had significantly higher 1-year OS (OR for survival = 0.50, p = 0.009) and lower major complications (OR = 1.88, p = 0.02) after therapy. Three studies reported on the length of hospital stay. The average length ± standard deviation reported in individual studies for SR and TACE plus RFA groups was 19.8 ± 8.4 days and 7.4 ± 2.2 days, respectively; 18.7 ± 4.9 days and 11.5 ± 6.9 days, respectively; and 16.6 ± 6.7 days and 8.5 ± 4.1 days, respectively (p < 0.0001 for all studies). Three or 5-year OS and 1-, 3-, or 5-year RFS did not significantly differ between the two therapies. Conclusion: Combined TACE plus RFA may be an alternative to SR for the treatment of patients with HCC within Milan the criteria. Non-randomized design in most of the original studies was a limitation.

Background: Aberrant expression of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and protein 53 (P53) has been observed in various malignancies, and recently, the mechanism of PD-L1 regulation by P53 has been elucidated. We aimed to explore possible correlations between PD-L1 and P53 expression and the prognosis of patients with resected pulmonary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC). Methods: A total of 67 consecutive patients with primary pulmonary LELC who underwent radical resection from January 2003 to December 2014 were enrolled in our study. Membranous PD-L1 and nuclear P53 expression were detected by immunohistochemical staining (IHC). Results: Positive expression of PD-L1 in tumor cells (TCs), PD-L1 in tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and P53 was investigated in 44 patients (65.7%), 37 patients (55.2%), and 34 patients (50.7%), respectively. Using univariate and multivariable analysis, both PD-L1 (+) in TCs and P53 (+) were observed to be significantly independent prognostic factors associated with longer disease-free survival (DFS, P=0.037 and 0.039, respectively), along with early stage LELC (P=0.037), but had no association with overall survival (OS) (P>0.05). In the P53 (+) group, the rate of patients with PD-L1 (+) in TCs was significantly higher than in the P53 (-) group (85.3% vs. 45.5%, P=0.001). In addition, among the 45 patients who underwent adjuvant chemotherapy, DFS was significantly longer in patients with either PD-L1 (+) in TCs or P53 (+) (P=0.036 and 0.044, respectively). Conclusions: PD-L1 and P53 may be potential therapeutic targets for primary pulmonary LELC. PD-L1 (+) in TCs and P53 (+) were reliable predictors for longer DFS and benefits from adjuvant therapy in resected cases. Routine detection of these two indices in lung LELC may be warranted.

Atomistic simulations are capable of providing insights into physical mechanisms responsible for mechanical properties of the transition metal of Tantalum (Ta). By using molecular dynamics (MD) method, temperature and pressure dependences of the elastic properties of Ta single crystals are investigated through <100> tensile loading. First of all, a comparative study between two types of embedded-atom method (EAM) potentials is made in term of the elastic properties of Ta single crystals. The results show that Ravelo-EAM (Physical Review B, 2013, 88: 134101) potential behaves well at different hydrostatic pressures. Then, the MD simulation results based on the Ravelo-EAM potential show that Ta will experience a body-centered-cubic (BCC) to face-centered-cubic (FCC) phase transition before fracture under <100> tensile loading at 1 K temperature, and model size and strain rate have no obvious effects on tensile behaviors of Ta. Next, from the simulation results at the system temperature from 1 to 1500 K, it can be derived that the elastic modulus of E100 linearly decrease with the increasing temperature, while the yielding stress decrease with conforming a quadratic polynomial formula. Finally, the pressure dependence of the elastic properties is performed from 0 to 140 GPa and the observations show that the elastic modulus increases with the increasing pressure overall.

Phytochemical studies on the whole herb of Sphaerophysa salsula has resulted in the discovery of one new 8-isopentenyl isoflavone derivative, named sphaerosin s2 (3-(8-(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-furo[2,3-h]chromen-3-yl)-2,6-dimethoxyphenol) (1), along with four know 8-isopentenyl isoflavone derivatives (2-5). Compounds (2, 4 and 5) were isolated for the first time from this species. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of ESI-MS, UV, IR, 1D NMR and 2D NMR data.

PURPOSE: To preliminarily evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) for unresectable soft tissue sarcoma refractory to systemic chemotherapy. METHODS: Ten patients with refractory sarcoma who underwent DEB-TACE therapy between January 2015 and January 2017 were identified. Clinical information and radiological data were retrospectively collected to analyze tumor response, overall survival (OS), progression-free survival and adverse events (AEs). Tumor response to DEB-TACE was assessed with modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST) guidelines applied to computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: All DEB-TACE procedures were successfully performed for ten patients with 15 tumor lesions. The median follow-up duration was 19 months and the median survival time was 21 months (range 11-30 months). The 1- and 2-year OS rate was 90 and 30%, respectively. According to the guidance of mRECIST, complete response, partial response, stable disease and progressive disease were noted in zero (0%), three (30%), four (40%) and three (30%) patients, respectively. The disease control rate and objective response rate was 70 and 30%, respectively. There were no serious AEs in patients after DEB-TACE. CONCLUSIONS: Our data showed that DEB-TACE was effective and safe for patients with soft tissue sarcoma. Therefore, DEB-TACE can be considered as an alternative treatment option for unresectable soft tissue sarcoma refractory to conventionally systemic chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Oxidative stress injury is believed to be important in diabetic cardiomyopathy. Recent evidence indicates that miR-22 plays an important role in various cardiovascular diseases, but the protective role of miR-22 in diabetic cardiomyopathy remains undetermined. METHODS: Diabetes was induced in male C57BL/6 mice by intraperitoneal injection with streptozotocin combined with a high-fat diet, and miR-22 was overexpressed following transfection with adeno-associated virus. Cardiac function was assessed by echocardiography and a cardiac catheter system. In vitro study, H9c2 cells were treated with normal or high glucose (HG), and cell viability or apoptosis was detected using the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and superoxide dismutase were also detected in diabetic mice and H9c2 cells. The expression level of miR-22 was detected by real-time PCR. The protein expression of Sirt 1, oxidative stress injury-related proteins (GRP78, CHOP, ATF 3), and apoptosis-related proteins Bax/Bcl-2, cl-casp-9/casp-9, and cl-casp-3/casp-3 were determined by Western blotting analysis. RESULTS: HG-induced oxidative stress injury and apoptosis were observed in H9c2 cells, which were ameliorated by miR-22. Cardiac dysfunction and severely altered heart structure were also observed in diabetic mice and were dramatically reversed by overexpression of miR-22. The expression of Sirt 1 decreased significantly in diabetic mice and HG-treated H9c2 cells. Overexpression of miR-22 restored the level of Sirt 1. Bioinformatics analysis predicted that Sirt 1 was a potential target gene of miR-22. Luciferase reporter assay verified that miR-22 promoted Sirt 1 expression by direct binding to the Sirt 1 3'untranslated repeats. Upregulation of Sirt 1 could improve cell viability and attenuate oxidative stress injury and apoptosis in the HG-treated H9c2 cells, similar to the effect of miR-22. However, the protective effects of miR-22 against HG-induced oxidative stress injury and apoptosis were abrogated by knockdown of Sirt 1. CONCLUSIONS: Overexpression of miR-22 can attenuate oxidative stress injury in diabetic cardiomyopathy by upregulation of Sirt 1 in vivo and in vitro.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze prognostic factors for survival after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with sorafenib for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stages B and C. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical data of 198 patients with BCLC stage B and C HCCs who underwent TACE combined with sorafenib between June 2012 and January 2017 were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Survival curves were detected using log-rank test. Univariate analysis was performed using log-rank test with respect to 11 prognostic factors potentially affecting survival. All statistically significant prognostic factors identified by univariate analysis were entered into a Cox proportion hazards regression model to identify independent predictors of survival. P values were two-sided and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: By the end of this study, the median follow-up duration was 43.6 months. The median overall survival (OS) of the patients was 21.0 months (95% confidence interval [CI]: 16.94-25.05), and the 1-, 2-, 3- and 5-year OS rates were 72%, 43%, 28%, and 4%, respectively. Tumor size (χ2 = 33.607, P < 0.0001), tumor number (χ2 = 4.084, P = 0.043), Child-Pugh class (χ2 = 33.187, P < 0.0001), BCLC stage (χ2 = 50.224, P < 0.0001), portal vein tumor thrombus (χ2 = 88.905, P < 0.0001), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (χ2 = 98.007, P < 0.0001), extrahepatic spread (χ2 = 34.980, P < 0.0001), TACE times (χ2 = 8.350, P = 0.015), and sorafenib treatment strategy (χ2 = 81.593, P < 0.0001) were found to be significantly associated with OS by univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis showed that BCLC stage (95% CI: 1.133-3.982, P = 0.019), extrahepatic spread (95% CI: 1.136-2.774, P = 0.012), and sorafenib treatment duration (95% CI: 0.352-0.574, P = 0.000) were independent prognostic factors associated with OS. There were no serious treatment-related adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that extrahepatic spread was a risk factor, and sorafenib treatment and superior BCLC stage were protective factors. Therefore, the study indicated that TACE combined with sorafenib was an effective and safe treatment for patients with BCLC stage B HCC without extrahepatic spread.

Background: In recent years, the tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) has been considered to a new and independent predictive variable for the prognosis of some kinds of neoplasms. The objective of this study was to assess the prognostic significance of the TSR in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: A cohort of 261 NSCLC patients who underwent radical surgery of lung cancer were included in the present study. Two independent observers visually estimated the TSR on hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) stained tissue pathological slices. According to the proportion of stroma ≥50% or <50%, We separate the patients into two groups: those with stroma-poor and those with stroma-rich tumors. Results: Both univariate and multivariate analyses disclosed that the TSR was associated with overall survival (OS) [hazard ratio (HR), 1.741; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.040-2.913 and HR, 1.904; 95% CI, 1.132-3.202, respectively]. The HR values for disease-free survival (DFS) were 1.795 (95% CI, 1.073-3.005) and 2.034 (95% CI, 1.210-3.420). The OS and DFS of patients with stroma-poor tumors were better than those with stroma-rich tumors. Conclusions: These results demonstrated that the TSR is a new prognostic factor for NSCLC. Stroma-poor tumors were associated with longer disease-free period and better prognosis than were stroma-rich tumors in NSCLC patients. The TSR may contribute to the development of individualized treatment for NSCLC in the future.

Multispectroscopic techniques were used to investigate the interaction of S-allyl cysteine (SAC) from garlic with human serum albumin (HSA). UV-Vis absorption measurements prove the formation of the HSA-SAC complex. An analysis of fluorescence spectra revealed that in the presence of SAC, the quenching mechanism of HSA is considered static. The quenching rate constant Kq, KSV, and the binding constant KA were estimated. According to the Van't Hoff equation, the thermodynamic parameters enthalpy change (ΔH) and entropy change (ΔS) were calculated to be -1.00×105 J/mol and -255 J/mol/K, respectively. These indicate that hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces are the major forces between SAC and HSA. The changes in the secondary structure of HSA, which was induced by SAC, were determined by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Energy transfer was confirmed and the distance between donor and acceptor was calculated to be 2.83 nm.

Background:: Core fucosylation (CF), catalyzed by α-1,6 fucosyltransferase (Fut8) in mammals, plays an important role in pathological processes through posttranslational modification of key signaling receptor proteins, including transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß receptors and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors. However, its effect on peritoneal fibrosis is unknown. Here, we investigated its influence on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of rat peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) in vitro induced by a high-glucose (HG) culture solution. Methods:: Rat PMCs were first cultured in a HG (2.5%) culture solution to observe the CF expression level (fluorescein isothiocyanate-lens culinaris agglutinin), we next established a knockdown model of rat PMCs in vitro with Fut8 small interfering RNA (siRNA) to observe whether inhibiting CF decreases the messenger RNA (mRNA) expression and protein expression of Fut8 and reverses EMT status. Rat PMCs were randomly divided into control group, mock group (transfected with scrambled siRNA), Fut8 siRNA group, HG group, HG + mock group, and HG + Fut8 siRNA group. Finally, we examined the activation of TGF-ß/Smad2/3 signaling and PDGF/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling to observe the influence of CF on them. Results:: CF, Fut8 mRNA, and protein expression were all significantly upregulated in HG- induced EMT model than those in the control rat PMCs (P < 0.05). Fut8 siRNA successfully blocked CF of TGF-ß receptors and PDGF receptors and attenuated the EMT status (E-cadherin and α-SMA and phenotypic changes) in HG-induced rat PMCs. In TGF-ß/Smad2/3 signaling, Fut8 siRNA did not suppress the protein expression of TGF-ß receptors and Smad2/3; however, it significantly suppressed the phosphorylation of Smad2/3 (relative expression folds of HG + Fut8 group vs. HG group: 7.6 ± 0.4 vs. 15.1 ± 0.6, respectively, P < 0.05). In PDGF/ERK signaling, Fut8 siRNA did not suppress the protein expression of PDGF receptors and ERK, but it significantly suppressed the phosphorylation of ERK (relative expression folds of HG + Fut8 group vs. HG group: 8.7 ± 0.9 vs. 15.6 ± 1.2, respectively, P < 0.05). Blocking CF inactivated the activities of TGF-ß and PDGF signaling pathways, and subsequently blocked EMT. Conclusions:: These results demonstrate that CF contributes to rat PMC EMT, and that blocking it attenuates EMT. CF regulation is a potential therapeutic target of peritoneal fibrosis.

The most important step for lower extremity exoskeleton is to infer human motion intent (HMI), which contributes to achieve human exoskeleton collaboration. Since the user is in the control loop, the relationship between human robot interaction (HRI) information and HMI is nonlinear and complicated, which is difficult to be modeled by using mathematical approaches. The nonlinear approximation can be learned by using machine learning approaches. Gaussian Process (GP) regression is suitable for high-dimensional and small-sample nonlinear regression problems. GP regression is restrictive for large data sets due to its computation complexity. In this paper, an online sparse GP algorithm is constructed to learn the HMI. The original training dataset is collected when the user wears the exoskeleton system with friction compensation to perform unconstrained movement as far as possible. The dataset has two kinds of data, i.e., (1) physical HRI, which is collected by torque sensors placed at the interaction cuffs for the active joints, i.e., knee joints; (2) joint angular position, which is measured by optical position sensors. To reduce the computation complexity of GP, grey relational analysis (GRA) is utilized to specify the original dataset and provide the final training dataset. Those hyper-parameters are optimized offline by maximizing marginal likelihood and will be applied into online GP regression algorithm. The HMI, i.e., angular position of human joints, will be regarded as the reference trajectory for the mechanical legs. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, experiments are performed on a subject at a natural speed. The experimental results show the HMI can be obtained in real time, which can be extended and employed in the similar exoskeleton systems.
