RESUMO

A checklist of 166 species and subspecies from 62 genera, 15 subfamilies, 5 families and 2 superfamilies of Gryllidea, is recorded from Yunnan Province of China, based on the published data and accumulated material. The detailed distribution of most species is provided in Yunnan Province. Mitius eryuanensis Yuan, Xie Liu sp. nov. is described as new species.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary intracranial tumor and originates from the small pool of adult neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPCs). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of brain tumors, gliomas are classified into grades I-IV, and GBM is defined as the highest grade (IV). GBM can be disseminated by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), but extracranial metastasis is rare. Additionally, the pathway and mechanism involved remain unclear. Case Presentation: We report a rare case of left temporal lobe GBM with multiple bone metastases and soft tissue metastasis. This 49-year-old right-handed man who was diagnosed with GBM underwent surgery on May 9, 2017, followed by radiochemotherapy in June 2017. On August 13, 2019, local relapse was found. Then, the patient received a second surgery but not radiochemotherapy. In November 2019, the patient was reported to be suffering from low back pain for nearly 1 month. On December 6, 2019, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracolumbar vertebrae and abdominal computed tomography (CT) confirmed metastases on the ninth posterior rib on the right, the third anterior rib on the left, and the T7 and T10 vertebrae and their appendages. CT-guided rib space-occupying puncture biopsy was performed, and GBM was identified by pathology. Conclusion: We should pay attention to extracranial metastasis of GBM. Timely detection and early treatment improve overall quality of patients' life. The extracranial metastasis in this patient may have occurred through the spinal nerve root or intercostal nerve. Further clinical observations are required to clarify the pathway and mechanism involved.

PURPOSE: Some studies have indicated that using 500 mg/m2 rituximab combined with CHOP-14 may be beneficial for elderly men but not women with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential benefit of escalated doses of rituximab with CHOP-21 as the first-line treatment in male patients with DLBCL. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study to analyze the survival benefit of rituximab 500 mg/m2 plus the CHOP-21 regimen (Escalated-R-CHOP-21) as the first-line treatment compared with using rituximab 375 mg/m2 plus the CHOP-21 regimen (Standard-R-CHOP-21) in men with DLBCL. We used propensity score matching to maximize the balance of the observed covariables. The primary endpoints of this study were the progression-free survival (PFS) rate and overall survival (OS) rate at 3 years. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 47 months (IQR 31-65), no significant difference in PFS and OS was found for men treated with Escalated-R-CHOP-21 compared with Standard-R-CHOP-21 [3-year PFS: 69.7% versus 71.9%, p = 0.867; 3-year OS: 83.0% versus 82.4%, p = 0.660]. After 1:1 propensity score matching, we found that the patients using Escalated-R-CHOP-21 had statistically significant survival benefits relative to Standard-R-CHOP-21 among the 96 matched elderly male patients for 3-year PFS [75.5% (95% CI 62.8-88.2) versus 58.2% (95% CI 44.3-72.1); p = 0.019] and 3-year OS [86.6% (95% CI 76.4-96.8) versus 65.8% (95% CI 52.1-79.5); p = 0.017]. However, no differences in survival were observed for younger male patients. Furthermore, the dose effect in PFS of Escalated-R-CHOP-21 was more obvious for elderly male patients with no high-risk extranodal sites (p = 0.005 and interaction p = 0.030). CONCLUSION: Escalated-R-CHOP-21 could be a safe and effective option for treating elderly male patients with DLBCL. This study provides new insight into optimizing the standard treatment regimen, which may have important therapeutic implications in elderly male patients with DLBCL.

Focusing on the original text record in Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor), the relevant theories of "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" are explored, e.g. acupoint names, meridians and acupoint features, and the clinical application of these acupoints has been analyzed. It is discovered that "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" are mainly used in treatment of the disorders in the nervous system, five sensory organs and motor system. Besides, in terms of the relevant theories, "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" has been compared with "root and knot" and "twelve divergent meridians". It is found that "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" communicates the externally-internally related meridians and is applicable in treatment of the disorders with both exterior and interior involved. It is the essential acupoint composition of the human body.

This study aimed to identify the maximum-tolerated dose (MTD) of cyclophosphamide when combined with bortezomib and fludarabine (B-FC) in a phase 1b trial, and to assess the efficacy and safety of this combination in a phase 2 trial in patients with relapsed or refractory MCL (rrMCL). Forty patients were enrolled between April 8, 2011, and October 10, 2015. The MTD of cyclophosphamide was identified to be 250 mg/m2 days 1-2. At a median follow-up of 31.6 months (13.5-47.4), among 32 patients in phase 2, 10 (31%) had a complete response and 13 (41%) had a partial response. The median progression-free survival was 21 months (95% CI 7.3-34.7), and the median overall survival was 32.4 months (95% CI 17.8-47.0). Grade 3-4 hematologic AEs included neutropenia (27%) and thrombocytopenia (39%). The B-FC regimen has satisfactory responses and manageable toxicities in rrMCL patients (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01322776).

Introduction: Vascular calcification (VC), with the mechanisms remaining unclear, is closely related with dialysis patients' cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality. Irisin is a newly identified myokine. This study aims to evaluate the serum irisin levels of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and their relationship with VC. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled stable PD patients in Peking University Third Hospital who were followed for >6 months. We used plain X-ray films of abdomen to quantitatively evaluate VC of abdominal aorta. VC was evaluated by abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) scores, and PD patients were divided into the high AAC score group (AAC score ≥4) and the low AAC score group (AAC score <4). Demographic data and laboratory indexes were collected. Serum irisin concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: A total of 102 PD patients were enrolled in this study, and 52 patients (51.0%) were found to have a high AAC score of ≥4. Age, diabetic mellitus proportion, pulse pressure, hypercalcemia (corrected calcium >2.54 mmol/L) rate, serum ultrasensitive C reactive protein, and AAC scores were significantly higher in the high AAC score group than those of the low AAC score group (p < 0.05). The high AAC score group had lower diastolic blood pressure, serum albumin, and serum carbon dioxide combining power compared with the low AAC score group (p < 0.05). Serum irisin levels of PD patients with a high AAC score were significantly lower than those of PD patients with a low AAC score (109.7 ± 13.1 ng/mL vs. 115.9 ± 10.1 ng/mL, p = 0.010). The multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that serum irisin, diabetic mellitus, serum ultrasensitive C reactive protein, and age were independent factors influencing the occurrence of VC in PD patients. Conclusion: Our results are the first to provide a clinical evidence of the association between serum irisin and abdominal aortic calcification in PD patients. Lower irisin levels, diabetic mellitus, higher serum ultrasensitive C reactive protein, and older age could be potential predictive factors for VC in PD patients.

The family Flavobacteriaceae forms a major branch within the phylum Bacteroidetes. Whole-genome sequence-based analysis could significantly improve the accuracy of taxonomic assignments. In this study, phylogenomic analyses were carried out to revisit the taxonomic status of a clade of the family Flavobacteriaceae. Taking genome-based phylogeny as the primary guideline and average amino acid identity and phenotypic information as supplements, the following taxonomic proposals were put forward: Arenitalea lutea should be reclassified into the genus Algibacter; Algibacter aquaticus should be reclassified into the genus Flavivirga; Jejuia pallidilutea and Algibacter aestuarii should be reclassified into the genus Hyunsoonleella; Algibacter alginicilyticus should be reclassified into the novel genus Pseudalgibacter gen. nov. This study builds up a solid framework for taxonomic decisions of a clade of the family Flavobacteriaceae and will contribute to further insights into the evolution of this family.

Proper dendrite morphogenesis and synapse formation are essential for neuronal development and function. Dasm1, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, is known to promote dendrite outgrowth and excitatory synapse maturation in vitro. However, the in vivo function of Dasm1 in neuronal development and the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. To learn more, Dasm1 knockout mice were constructed and employed to confirm that Dasm1 regulates dendrite arborization and spine formation in vivo. We performed a yeast two-hybrid screen using Dasm1, revealing MRCKß as a putative partner; additional lines of evidence confirmed this interaction and identified cytoplasmic proline-rich region (823-947 aa) of Dasm1 and MRCKß self-activated kinase domain (CC1, 410-744 aa) as necessary and sufficient for binding. Using co-immunoprecipitation assay, autophosphorylation assay, and BS3 cross-linking assay, we show that Dasm1 binding triggers a change in MRCKß's conformation and subsequent dimerization, resulting in autophosphorylation and activation. Activated MRCKß in turn phosphorylates a class 2 regulatory myosin light chain, which leads to enhanced actin rearrangement, causing the dendrite outgrowth and spine formation observed before. Removal of Dasm1 in mice leads to behavioral abnormalities. Together, these results reveal a crucial molecular pathway mediating cell surface and intracellular signaling communication to regulate actin dynamics and neuronal development in the mammalian brain.

With the wide application of genome editing in insects, a simple and efficient identification method is urgently needed to meet the increasing demand for mutation detection. Here, taking migratory locusts as a model system, we developed a non-invasive method to accurately identify genome-edited mutants by using DNA from insect exuviae. We compared the quantity and quality of genomic DNA from exuviae in five instar hoppers and found that the 1st instar exuviae had the highest DNA yield and content, while the 3rd instar exuviae had the best quality. Consensus genotypes were identified from genomic DNA of hoppers at different developmental stages in the same individuals. Moreover, we demonstrated that the amplification products from DNA extracted from locust exuviae are the consensus sequences with those from the hemolymph and foreleg pre-tarsus. Therefore, non-invasive samples provide the same genotyping results as minimally invasive and invasive samples of the same individuals. Furthermore, this identification method that uses genomic DNA from exuviae can be used for early screening of positive genome-edited individuals in each generation for adult crossing. In our study, the non-invasive identification method was not only simpler and provided results earlier than existing methods, but also had a better reproducibility and accuracy. This non-invasive identification approach using genomic DNA from exuviae can be adapted to meet the growing demand for genetic analysis and will find wide application in insect genome editing research.

BACKGROUND: After storing blood for a period of time, the structure and properties of the red blood cells (RBC) will change, which results in a decrease in the oxygen-carrying capacity, and further has a certain impact on their exosomes. OBJECTIVES: Effective oxygen uptake (Q), P50, 2,3-DPG, and Na+-K+-ATP of RBC after different storage times were detected. Electron microscopy was used to observe the morphology of RBC and the characteristics of secreting exosomes. Western blot was used to detect the expression of phenotypes CD63 and CD81 of exosomes, and the expression of mitochondrial riboprotein MRPS35 of exosomes was also detected to explore the mechanism of decreased function of RBC with the extension of preservation time. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After the RBC suspension was prepared, the effective oxygen-carrying capacity (Q) and P50, as well as 2,3-DPG and Na+-K+-ATP were prepared. This was followed by morphology observation of erythrocyte exosomes using transmission electron microscope (TEM), and by western blot analysis of exosome phenotypes CD63 and CD81. RESULTS: Erythrocytes secrete exosomes, which results in abnormal expression of related proteins in mitochondria. This leads to increased ROS production, mitochondrial apoptosis and, finally, changes in or damage to erythrocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in the rheological properties and oxygen-carrying functions of erythrocytes during preservation are all observable manifestations, and underlying these manifestations are mechanisms of damage to erythrocytes at a molecular level. Erythrocytes secrete exosomes, which results in abnormal expression of related proteins in mitochondria, increasing ROS production, mitochondrial apoptosis and, finally, changes or damage to erythrocytes.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze the outcome and prognostic factors of root canal treatment (RCT) and endodontic microsurgery (EMS) in the treatment of apical periodontitis (AP), respectively, and to compare the outcome and prognostic factors between initial RCT and nonsurgical retreatment (re-RCT) for AP. METHODS: Patients with AP were recruited from the Stomatology Department of Peking University Third Hospital from January 2016 to December 2019. Data were collected by medical records review. Univariate analysis of treatment outcome was performed for the total RCT group, initial RCT group, re-RCT group and EMS group, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression was performed for the three RCT groups, respectively, but not for the EMS group. RESULTS: The overall success of treatment for AP was 73.8%. The success rate of RCT in 229 cases was 70.7%, while that of EMS in 34 cases was 94.1%. The failure of RCT was significantly higher for elderly patients [odds ratio (OR) =1.025, P=0.013], teeth with incomplete fracture (OR =7.082, P=0.013), teeth with a greater crown root ratio (OR =1.198, P=0.029), teeth treated by a general dentist (OR =2.16, P=0.042) and teeth with unqualified treatment (OR =2.841, P=0.002). Of the 166 teeth treated by initial RCT, the success was 68.1%. A greater crown root ratio (OR =1.333, P=0.004) was identified as a risk factor for treatment. Of the 63 teeth treated by re-RCT, the success was 77.8%. A lower success was observed in teeth with unqualified treatment (OR =5.291, P=0.018). With regard to EMS, the univariate analysis showed that none of the variables were significantly related to the outcome. CONCLUSIONS: For AP treated by RCT, age, incomplete tooth fracture, crown root ratio, doctor classification and unqualified treatment had a strong impact on determining outcome. For initial RCT, crown root ratio was a significant outcome predictor, while for re-RCT, unqualified treatment was a strong statistically significant factor. No significant difference was found between the success of initial RCT and re-RCT for AP.

Although PD-1/PD-L1 blockade therapy confers salutary effects across cancer types, their efficacy in Extranodal Natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTCL) patients is limited and unpredictable. Here, we comprehensively evaluated the expression profile of a panel of immune-regulatory makers to identify novel prognostic biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets for this malignancy. Using immunohistochemistry and multiplex immunofluorescence, we found that the expression of VISTA (88.1%) was predominantly in CD68+ macrophages and much higher than PD-L1 expression (68.7%) in ENKTCL. B7-H4 and HHLA2 proteins were not detected in ENKTCL. B7-H3 was expressed in minority of ENKTCL patients (13.7%) and mainly colocalized with CD31. A close correlation was detected between VISTA and PD-L1, but they were not co-expressed in the same cells. High expressions of VISTA or PD-L1 were significantly associated with detrimental clinicopathological characteristics, dismal prognosis, and high density of CD8+ TILs, and high VISTA expression was also significantly associated with high density of Foxp3+ TILs. VISTA combined with PD-L1 was an independent prognostic factor for PFS and OS. Moreover, the patients with high VISTA showed a poor response to PD-1 blockades in ENKTCL. In conclusion, these findings provide a rationale for VISTA as an ideal immunotherapeutic target next to PD-L1 for ENKTCL.

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of ultrasound-indicated cerclage failure in singleton pregnancies for preventing extremely preterm birth. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study included 96 singleton pregnancies with ultrasound-indicated McDonald cerclage in women with previous preterm birth (PTB) and cervical shortening. Descriptive statistics were calculated at baseline and logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the factors associated with cerclage failure. RESULTS: In all, 28 (29%) of the women had a preterm delivery at before 28 weeks. Multivariate analysis identified cervical dilatation, non-cephalic presentation, and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) as independent predictors of cerclage failure (odds ratio [OR] 3.12, 95% CI [confidence interval] 1.01-9.66; OR 5.81, 95% CI 1.04-32.53; OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.03, respectively). The efficacy of these predictors was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristics curve. The area under the curve was 0.87 (95% CI 0.78-0.96, P < 0.001) with a sensitivity of 78.6% and specificity of 88.2%. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that cervical dilatation, fetal presentation, and PLR were valuable predictors of cerclage failure in singleton pregnancies with a history of PTB and a sonographic short cervix. The results can be potentially used to assess the prognosis of patients after cerclage and alert clinicians to consider enhanced surveillance and administration of individuals at an increased risk.

BACKGROUND Immunosuppression is regarded as the main cause of death induced by sepsis. Anti-programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) therapy is promising in reversing sepsis-induced immunosuppression but no evidence is available on use of commercially available anti-PD-L1 medications for this indication. The present preclinical study was performed to investigate the therapeutic effect of an anti-PD-L1 nanobody (KN035) in sepsis. MATERIAL AND METHODS The level of expression of PD-L1 in PD-L1 humanized mice was confirmed with flow cytometry. Plasma concentrations of KN035 at different dosages at different time points were detected using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. PD-L1 humanized mice were allocated into 4 groups: sham, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), isotype (isotype+CLP), and PD-L1 (KN035+CLP). The 7-day survival rate was observed to investigate outcomes in CLP mice. Disease severity was assessed with histopathological scoring of mice lungs and livers. Immune status was assessed based on cell apoptosis in the spleen and bacterial clearance. RESULTS PD-L1 levels were significantly elevated in peripheral lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils after CLP surgery. Blood concentrations of KN035 showed that 2.5 mg/kg had potential to be an ideal dosage for KN035 therapy. Survival analysis demonstrated that KN035 was associated with significantly reduced mortality on Day 7 after surgery (P=0.0083). The histopathological tests showed that KN035 alleviated sepsis-induced injury in the lungs and liver. KN035 reduced the number of apoptotic cells in the spleen and almost eliminated bacterial colonies in the peritoneal lavage fluid from the CLP mice. CONCLUSIONS KN035, an anti-PD-L1 antibody, can improve the rate of survival in CLP mice and alleviate sepsis-induced apoptosis in the spleen.

AIMS: To explore the association between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and anxiety and depression among nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak. BACKGROUND: Nurses play a vital role in responding to the COVID-19 outbreak, but many of them suffer from psychological problems due to the excessive workload and stress. Understanding the correlation between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and anxiety and depression will promote targeted psychosocial interventions for these affected nurses. METHODS: This cross-sectional study of 586 nurses was conducted in Eastern China. Participants completed online questionnaires that investigated anxiety, depression and cognitive emotion regulation strategies. RESULTS: The prevalence of nurses' anxiety and depression was 27.6% and 32.8%, respectively. Lower self-blame, rumination and catastrophizing, as well as greater acceptance and positive refocusing, were related to fewer symptoms of anxiety or depression. CONCLUSION: The cognitive emotion regulation strategies of acceptance and positive refocusing contribute to reducing anxiety or depression. These strategies should be considered when implementing psychotherapeutic interventions to improve nurses' adverse emotional symptoms. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: This study highlights the need to assess cognitive emotion regulation strategies use in screening for anxiety and depression. Nurse managers should develop psychosocial interventions including appropriate strategies to help nurses with adverse emotions during a pandemic.

Peri-engraftment respiratory distress syndrome (PERDS) is a kind of potentially life-threatening complication of autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). PERDS is characterized by fever, dyspnea, and hypoxemia during neutrophil engraftment. In order to identify the high-risk factors for PERDS, we retrospectively analyzed 260 patients with lymphoma undergoing ASCT in recent five years. The conditioning regimen was BuCyE (busulfan, cyclophosphamide, and etoposide). There were 16 patients (6.1%) diagnosed as PERDS. In multivariate analysis, prior anti-programmed death-1 (PD-1) therapy (hazard ratio [HR] = 8.852, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.954-26.527, P < 0.001) and history of pulmonary disease (HR = 3.718, 95% CI: 1.197-11.545, P = 0.023) were independent risk factors for PERDS. Patients with prior anti-PD-1 therapy (n = 31) had higher incidence of engraftment syndrome (77.4% vs. 33.4%, P < 0.001), PERDS (25.8% vs. 3.5%, P < 0.001), and transplant-related mortality (9.7% vs. 0.4%, P < 0.001), compared with those without prior anti-PD-1 therapy (n = 229). Subgroup analysis showed that sintilimab seemed to be associated with higher incidence of PERDS (42.9% vs. 11.8%, P = 0.06) compared with non-sintilimab group (pembrolizumab or toripalimab). C-reactive protein might be a feasible early predictor for PERDS. In conclusion, our study suggests that prior anti-PD-1 therapy may be a strong risk factor for life-threatening PERDS in patients with lymphoma undergoing ASCT.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of erythrocyte-mediated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in macrophages in hemorrhagic shock. An hemorrhagic shock model was established in male BALB/c mice. Animals were randomly divided into three groups (n = 8): control group (A), erythrocyte reinfusion group (B), and TLR9 inhibition group (C). Eight healthy BALB/c mice were also included as group N (n = 8). Mice in group A were not treated, while mice in groups B and C were transfused with red blood cells separated from the blood of mice in group N. Flow cytometry was used to detect the expression of erythrocyte surface protein TLR9 in each group. Immunofluorescence assay was used to analyze the distribution and relative expression of protein STING in macrophages. Flow cytometry was used to analyze the expression of STING, ATF6, and IRE1 in macrophages. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to analyze the levels of inflammatory signal molecules, including IFN-α, IFN-ß, IL-6, CCL4, CCL5, and IL-6. FITC-Annexin V was used to analyze the apoptosis of immune cells (macrophages) in mouse blood samples and to detect the concentration of calcium ions in erythrocyte cytoplasm. The results showed that the expression of erythrocyte surface protein TLR9; the distribution of STING-positive cells in macrophages; the expressions of STING, ATF6, and IRE1 in macrophages; the levels of inflammatory signal molecules; the apoptosis rate of macrophages; and the intracellular calcium concentration in erythrocytes in group B were higher than those in group A, followed by group C. These results suggest that TLR9 regulates ER stress in macrophages of mice with hemorrhagic shock through the TLR9-cGAS-STING-IFN signaling pathway. Increased expression of TLR9 enhanced macrophage activity, reduced apoptosis, enhanced inflammatory response and immune response, and restored electrolyte level, which might be a therapeutic option for the treatment of hemorrhagic shock.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative prediction of the Lauren classification in gastric cancer (GC) is very important to the choice of therapy, the evaluation of prognosis, and the improvement of quality of life. However, there is not yet radiomics analysis concerning the prediction of Lauren classification straightly. In this study, a radiomic nomogram was developed to preoperatively differentiate Lauren diffuse type from intestinal type in GC. METHODS: A total of 539 GC patients were enrolled in this study and later randomly allocated to two cohorts at a 7:3 ratio for training and validation. Two sets of radiomic features were derived from tumor regions and peritumor regions on venous phase computed tomography (CT) images, respectively. With the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression, a combined radiomic signature was constructed. Also, a tumor-based model and a peripheral ring-based model were built for comparison. Afterwards, a radiomic nomogram integrating the combined radiomic signature and clinical characteristics was developed. All the models were evaluated regarding classification ability and clinical usefulness. RESULTS: The combined radiomic signature achieved an area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.715 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.663-0.767) in the training cohort and 0.714 (95% CI, 0.636-0.792) in the validation cohort. The radiomic nomogram incorporating the combined radiomic signature, age, CT T stage, and CT N stage outperformed the other models with a training AUC of 0.745 (95% CI, 0.696-0.795) and a validation AUC of 0.758 (95% CI, 0.685-0.831). The significantly improved sensitivity of radiomic nomogram (0.765 and 0.793) indicated better identification of diffuse type GC patients. Further, calibration curves and decision curves demonstrated its great model fitness and clinical usefulness. CONCLUSIONS: The radiomic nomogram involving the combined radiomic signature and clinical characteristics holds potential in differentiating Lauren diffuse type from intestinal type for reasonable clinical treatment strategy.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a global public health priority. Many modifiable factors have been shown to influence the development of dementia, but these factors are not adequately known by the general public. This study aimed to assess public awareness of the factors that are associated with dementia in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to October 2019 using an Internet-based questionnaire. Data on basic sociodemographic characteristics were collected, and the knowledge of risk and protective factors for dementia was investigated. Logistic regression analysis was performed to compare levels of the knowledge of factors associated with dementia across populations with different demographic characteristics. RESULTS: Data from 3338 respondents were analyzed. The percentages of participants who accurately identified the risk factors of dementia were follows: 84.24% for negative affect, 65.07% for alcohol use, 56.68% for smoking, 48.74% for hypertension, and 42.66% for diabetes. The percentages of participants who accurately identified the protective factors for dementia were follows: 90.00% for exercise, 84.69% for social activity, 80.92% for intelligence games, 74.45% for reading, and 6.14% for antihypertensive or hypolipidemic drugs. The majority of Chinese people correctly recognized the role of lifestyle factors in the development of dementia but not medical factors. The levels of knowledge of the factors associated with dementia were significantly distinct across populations with different characteristics. The following sociodemographic characteristics were associated with more comprehensive knowledge of dementia risk and protective factors: women, young age, high education levels, nonmanual jobs, and contact with patients with dementia. CONCLUSIONS: Public awareness and knowledge of risk and protective factors for dementia in China are still insufficient. More efforts are needed to publicize information to reduce the risk of dementia.

Purpose: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a subtype with distinct heterogeneity, high invasiveness, and poorer prognosis. There is a controversy about adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) at the T1aN0M0 stage. This study was carried out to assess the survival benefit of ACT for these patients. Methods: We identified 1,099 patients with T1aN0M0 TNBC who were diagnosed between 2010 and 2016 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Univariate and multivariable analyses were conducted to determine factors related to survival. One-to-one (1:1) propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to construct a matched sample consisting of pairs of ACT and non-ACT subjects. Breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS) of the two groups were evaluated by Kaplan-Meier plots and Cox proportional hazard regression models. Stratified analysis according to different variables was also performed. Results: No obvious differences in demographic or clinical characteristics were found between patients who had ACT and those without ACT therapy in terms of race, marital status, laterality, or radiation therapy. A higher proportion of patients who were older, had a higher histological grade tumor, and who received breast-conserving surgery had adjuvant chemotherapy. The ACT group did not exhibit better survival in BCSS or OS before PSM. After PSM, the ACT and non-ACT groups consisted of 255 patients, respectively, and Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate analysis both indicate that adjuvant chemotherapy was not associated with better survival in terms of BCSS or OS. Furthermore, we did not observe any survival advantage in any subgroup irrespective of age, race, marital status, histological grade, surgery type, or radiotherapy status. Conclusions: The study results indicate that there is no strong association between ACT and better survival in T1aN0M0 TNBC. It implies that the chemotherapy decision should be made cautiously and further research into therapeutic strategies are needed in T1aN0M0 TNBC patients.
