Water pollution caused by organic pollutants has aroused great concern to earth sustainability in the last several decades. Herein, a facile one-pot solvothermal approach was developed to construct bimetallic platinum-rhodium alloyed nano-multipods (PtRh ANMPs) in oleylamine (OAm) by adopting creatinine and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as the co-structure-directing agents. The as-fabricated nanocatalyst exhibited extraordinary catalytic behaviors towards 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and rhodamine B (RhB) reduction by sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Impressively, the resultant catalyst showed highly facilitated rate constant (k: 0.209/0.354 min-1) and turnover frequency (TOF: 1.0 × 10-3/0.44 × 10-3 mol g-1 min-1) towards 4-NP and RhB reduction in comparison with commercial Pt black under the same conditions. This research offers some valuable insights for facile preparation of advanced nanostructures as efficient and recyclable catalyst in environmental remediation field.

Bidens bipinnata L. is a folk medicinal plant in China that shows significant antihyperlipidemia effectiveness. However, studies of the underlying mechanism study are lacking. In order to explore the potential action sites and the underlying mechanism of treating hyperlipidemic, this work undertook tissue distribution and molecular docking research on the markers of B. bipinnata L., which were obtained through serum pharmacochemistry and network database retrieval. The results showed that seven compounds (gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, rutin, hyperoside, bipinnate polyacetylenicloside, luteolin and quercetin) were screened out as markers. Owing to the diversity of chemical structures, they exhibited an inconsistent trend in tissue distribution. However, all of them had high levels in the liver and no specific distribution in other tissues. More interestingly, seven proteins-HMGCR (1HWK), NR3C1 (4P6W), CYP1A2 (2HI4), RXRA (4PP3), CES1 (1MX1), HSD11B1 (2RBE) and CYP1A1 (4I8V)-showed significant binding affinity with three or more markers, suggesting that they may be the target proteins of B. bipinnata L. This study preliminarily sheds light on the tissue distribution and targets of B. bipinnata L., providing some useful information on the underlying mechanisms of the antihyperlipidemia effect.

It is very important to understand water ecology and the carbon cycle process by studying the composition, source, spectral characteristics, and influence factors of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). The optical characteristics, composition, and source of CDOM in 71 water samples were collected from the lakes and four rivers of the Taibaishan Nature Reserve in the summer of 2019. The rivers included the Bawang, Heihe, Shitou, and Xushui Rivers. They were analyzed by UV-Vis spectral and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, combined with a parallel factor analysis model and redundant analysis. The results showed that CDOM in the water of the Taibaishan Nature Reserve contained two types of four fluorescent components, in which the humus-like components C1 and C2 were the main components of CDOM. The relative contribution of C1 and C2 to the rivers was 82%-96%, which was significantly larger than the lakes. All fluorescence indexes (FI) were larger than 1.8, the index of recent autochthonous contribution (BIX), and the index of freshness (ß:α) were all approximately 0.6. The humification indexes (HIX) of the rivers were significantly larger than those of the lakes (P<0.01). The DOM in the rivers was mainly from the forest soil of the Nature Reserve, and the water quality of the lakes was affected by tourists to some extent. The results of the redundant analysis show that the CDOM spectral characteristic parameters were significantly influenced by EC for the lakes (P<0.05) and by EC, DTN, and DOC for the rivers (P<0.01).

Iron oxides are widely distributed in soils and have large specific surface areas and strong affinities with heavy metals, and thus play a significant role in the transformation of heavy metals in soils. Pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of heavy metal-immobilizing bacteria Bacillus megaterium N3, Serratia liquefaciens H12, and strain N3 combination with H12 on the absorption of Cd by ZM-3 (Triticum aestivum L.). The effects of different treatments on soil pH, iron oxide content, and relative abundance of iron oxide bacteria, clay particle mineral composition, and aggregates in wheat rhizosphere were also measured. The results showed that strains N3, H12, and N3+H12 significantly (P<0.05) increased the dry weight (36.5%-75.3%) of wheat grains, and significantly (P<0.05) decreased the content of Cd (30.2%-84.9%) in wheat grains. Furthermore, compared with the single application of strain N3 or H12, the application of strain N3 combined with H12 had a stronger ability to reduce the absorption of Cd by ZM-3. The results suggested that strain N3, combined with H12, decreased the uptake of Cd in wheat by:①increasing the pH (from 6.74 to 7.08) of wheat rhizosphere soil; ② increasing the Fe oxide (67.9%) and goethite contents of wheat rhizosphere soil; ③ increasing the relative abundance of iron-oxidizing bacteria (Leptothrix spp. and Gallionella spp.), and ④ increasing the content of small particle size (<0.25 mm) aggregates. The results provide a theoretical basis and technical support for the use of heavy metal-immobilizing bacteria to repair farmland contaminated by heavy metals.

Zwitterions consist of equal molar cationic and anionic moieties and thus exhibit overall electroneutrality. Zwitterionic materials include phosphorylcholine, sulfobetaine, carboxybetaine, zwitterionic amino acids/peptides, and other mix-charged zwitterions that could form dense and stable hydration shells through the strong ion-dipole interaction among water molecules and zwitterions. As a result of their remarkable hydration capability and low interfacial energy, zwitterionic materials have become ideal choices for designing therapeutic vectors to prevent undesired biosorption especially nonspecific biomacromolecules during circulation, which was termed antifouling capability. And along with their great biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, negligible immunogenicity, systematic stability and long circulation time, zwitterionic materials have been widely utilized for the delivery of drugs and therapeutic genes. In this review, we first summarized the possible antifouling mechanism of zwitterions briefly, and separately introduced the features and advantages of each type of zwitterionic materials. Then we highlighted their applications in stimuli-responsive "intelligent" drug delivery systems as well as tumor-targeting carriers and stressed the multifunctional role they played in therapeutic gene delivery.

Periplocae Cortex is a traditional Chinese medicine in China, which is mainly produced in northeast China, north China, northwest China, southwest China. In recent years, the increasing in-depth research resulted in the discovery of anti-tumor and cardiac pharmacological activities of Periplocae Cortex, which has broad application prospects. On the basis of summarizing chemical components and pharmacological effects, combined with the theoretical system of Q-marker, the quality control components of Periplocae Cortex were predicted from the aspects of the correlation between chemical composition and traditional medicinal properties, traditional efficacy, and new clinical use, plasma composition, measurable composition, storage time by analyzing literature. Among the components, periplocoside, periplocin, periplogenin, 4-methoxy salicylaldehyde showed significant activity, which provides a scientific basis for quality evaluation of Periplocae Cortex.

To improve the permeability and antifouling properties of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane, amphiphilic sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) was introduced into PVC matrix. Three types of PVC/SPSF blend membranes containing different SPSF with the sulfonation degree (SD) of 20%, 30%, and 50% were fabricated by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The excellent compatibility between PVC and SPSF was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Surface chemical compositions, morphology, roughness, charge, hydrophilicity, permeability and antifouling properties of the pristine PVC membrane and the PVC/SPSF blend membranes were systematically compared and characterized. Due to the improved hydrophilicity and endowed negative charge, the blend membrane showed high water permeability (i.e. 880 L m-2h-1 bar-1), high bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection (i.e. 95.7%), and high flux recovery ratio (i.e. 96%), which outperformed ever reported and commercialized PVC membranes. Furthermore, the permeability and rejection properties of PVC/SPSF UF membranes were maintained after soaking in acidic and alkaline solutions for 30 days, indicating their outstanding acid and alkali tolerance. Therefore, SPSF was expected as a potential versatile modifier for fabricating high performance UF membranes.

KEY POINTS: The roles of the Na+ /HCO3 - cotransporters NBCn1 and NBCn2 as well as their activators IRBIT and L-IRBIT in the regulation of the mTAL transport of NH4 + , HCO3 - , and NaCl are investigated. Dietary challenges of NH4 Cl, NaHCO3 or NaCl all increase the abundance of NBCn1 and NBCn2 in the outer medulla. The three challenges generally produce parallel increases in the abundance of IRBIT and L-IRBIT in the outer medulla. Both IRBIT and L-IRBIT powerfully stimulate the activities of the mTAL isoforms of NBCn1 and NBCn2 as expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Our findings support the hypothesis that NBCn1, NBCn2, IRBIT and L-IRBIT appropriately promote NH4 + shunting but oppose HCO3 - and NaCl reabsorption in the mTAL, and thus are at the nexus of the regulation pathways for multiple renal transport processes. ABSTRACT: The medullary thick ascending limb (mTAL) plays a key role in urinary acid and NaCl excretion. NBCn1 and NBCn2 are present in the basolateral mTAL, where NBCn1 promotes NH4 + shunting. IRBIT and L-IRBIT (the IRBITs) are two powerful activators of certain acid-base transporters. Here we use western blotting and immunofluorescence to examine the effects of multiple acid-base and electrolyte disturbances on expression of NBCn1, NBCn2 and the IRBITs in rat kidney. We also use electrophysiology to examine the functional effects of IRBITs on NBCn1 and NBCn2 in Xenopus oocytes. NH4 Cl-induced metabolic acidosis (MAc) substantially increases protein expression of NBCn1 and NBCn2 in the outer medulla (OM) of rat kidney. Surprisingly, NaHCO3 -induced metabolic alkalosis (MAlk) and high-salt diet (HSD) also increase expression of NBCn1 and NBCn2 (effect of NaHCO3  > HSD). Moreover, all three challenges generally increase OM expression of the IRBITs. In Xenopus oocytes, the IRBITs substantially increase the activities of NBCn1 and NBCn2. We propose that upregulation of basolateral NBCn1 and NBCn2 plus the IRBITs in the mTAL: (1) promotes NH4 + shunting by increasing basolateral HCO3 - uptake to neutralize apical NH4 + uptake during MAc; (2) inhibits HCO3 - reabsorption during MAlk by opposing HCO3 - efflux via the basolateral anion exchanger AE2; and (3) inhibits NaCl reabsorption by mediating (with AE2) net NaCl backflux into the mTAL cell during HSD. Thus, NBCn1, NBCn2 and the IRBITs are at the nexus of the regulatory pathways for multiple renal transport processes.

MicroRNA (miR)-19b is expressed in various types of tumors and may serve as a potential therapeutic target. The miR­17­92 cluster is upregulated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) tissues and cells. miR­19b is a member of the miR­17­92 cluster; however, its expression and function in NPC are largely unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the expression and function of miR­19b in NPC cells. The miRCURY LNATM miRNA Inhibitor (miR­19b inhibitor and negative control) were transfected into C666­1 cells. The proliferation, apoptosis and migration of the cells were subsequently detected by the Cell Counting Kit­8 assay, flow cytometry and Transwell assay, respectively. Additionally, the expression of STAT3 signaling pathway­associated proteins [STAT3, pSTAT3 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1)] and the transcriptional targets of pSTAT3 [Bcl­2, myeloid leukemia protein 1 (Mcl­1) and cyclin D1] were detected by western blotting. The miR­19b inhibitor inhibited proliferation and migration and induced apoptosis of C666­1 cells. Furthermore, the miR­19b inhibitor upregulated the expression of SOCS1, a predicted target gene of miR­19b, and decreased the phosphorylation of STAT3 at Tyr705 and Ser727. These data indicated that upregulation of SOCS1, an endogenous inhibitor of STAT3 phosphorylation, attenuated the STAT3 signaling pathway in C666­1 cells. Moreover, the expression level of the proproliferative protein cyclin D1 and antiapoptotic proteins Mcl­1 and Bcl­2 was significantly decreased following transfection with the miR­19b inhibitor. The aforementioned three proteins are downstream transcriptional targets of the activated STAT3 signaling pathway. The results of the present study revealed that inhibition of miR­19b negatively modulated the malignant behavior of NPC cells via the STAT3 signaling pathway. Therefore, miR­19b inhibition may serve as a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of NPC.

Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) is an NAD+-dependent deacetylase with a significant role in 20% of all cancers, such as colon cancers and rectal adenocarcinoma. However, there is currently no effective drug for cancers related to SIRT6. To explore potential inhibitors of SIRT6, it is essential to reveal details of the interaction mechanisms between inhibitors and SIRT6 at the atomic level. The nature of small molecules from herbs have many advantages as inhibitors. Based on the conformational characteristics of the inhibitor Compound 9 (Asinex ID: BAS13555470), we explored the natural molecule Scutellarin, one compound of Huang Qin, which is an effective herb for curing cancer that has been described in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCMS) library. We investigated the interactions between SIRT6 and the inhibitors using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We illustrated that the structurally similar inhibitors have a similar binding mode to SIRT6 with residues-Leu9, Phe64, Val115, His133 and Trp188. Hydrophobic and π-stacking interactions play important roles in the interactions between SIRT6 and inhibitors. In summary, our results reveal the interactive mechanism of SIRT6 and the inhibitors and we also provide Scutellarin as a new potential inhibitor of SIRT6. Our study provides a new potential way to explore potential inhibitors from TCMS.

Even though Paranosema locustae is widely used in China as a biological agent for controlling grasshoppers, the mortality rate is initially quite low. This study sought to determine whether the simultaneous use of P. locustae and Beauveria bassiana would be a more effective control strategy. Additionally, changes in the intestinal microbial communities of migratory locusts infected with the two pathogens were analyzed to investigate the roles of gut microbes in pathogen-host interactions. The mortality rate of locusts inoculated with B. bassiana and P. locustae simultaneously was not significantly higher than expected, but the mortality rates of locusts inoculated with B. bassiana 3, 6, and 9 days after inoculation with P. locustae were significantly higher than if their effects were additive, indicating synergism. A MiSeq analysis found that Weissella was the most common bacterium, representing 41.48% and 51.62% of the total bacteria in the mid- and hindguts, respectively, and the bacterial declines were greatest during dual infections with B. bassiana and P. locustae. The appropriately timed combined application of P. locustae and B. bassiana was more effective against locusts than either treatment alone. Moreover, the combined inoculation of the two pathogens changed the gut microflora of locusts, indicating the potential relevancy of their synergistic effects on locust control.

The effects of heavy metal contamination on farmland continues to worsen progressively with an increase in anthropogenic activities such as industrial pollution and mining. Excess Cd and Pb in agricultural soils enter the food chain and adversely affect all organisms. Therefore, it is important to find an eco-friendly way to reduce heavy metal accumulation in crops. Based on their heavy metal resistance and growth-promoting characteristics, functional bacterial strains were screened and their effects on growth and heavy metal accumulation in wheat were verified via shaking flask adsorption and sand culture tests. Eighteen functional strains were isolated from the rhizospheric soil of Salvia setaria. Among them, Bacillus megaterium N3 and Serratia liquefaciens H12 were most effective at resisting high Cd (650 mg·L-1) and Pb (2700 mg·L-1) concentrations, and at producing indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (56.6 mg·L-1and 69.1 mg·L-1, respectively), siderophores, and 1-Amino-1-cyclopropanecarboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase. Static incubation experiments showed that strains N3 and H12 significantly increased the NH4+ concentration and pH, and decreased the Cd (63.1%-73.8%) and Pb (69.1%-81.8%) concentration in solution. In sand cultures, strains N3 and H12 not only increased the dry weight of wheat roots (47.2%-97.4%) and shoots (65.3%-153%) significantly, but also significantly reduced the Cd (49.2%-68.3%) and Pb (27.4%-84.5%) content in wheat roots and shoots. Thus, the results provide strain resources and a theoretical basis for the remediation of Cd- and Pb-contaminated farmlands for the safer production of crops.

The unique properties of covalent triazine-based organic framework/polymers, including large surface area, hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced adsorption, and economical preparation, make it a promising candidate as a stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography. However, irregular shapes and wide size distributions of such particles hinder column packing, resulting in a low column efficiency or a high back pressure. Herein, we describe the fabrication of SiO2@ covalent triazine-based organic polymer (CTP) core-shell microspheres with a distinct sphere-coating-sphere appearance using aminosilica as the supporting substrate to grow the CTP shell. By adjusting the amount of reactants, the thickness of the CTP shell, which consists of triazine and 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene monomers, was easily controlled. The developed core-shell microspheres were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, and N2 adsorption experiments. The synergism of the triazine and aromatic moieties on CTP provides the new stationary phase with multiple retention mechanisms, including hydrophobic, π-π, electron donor-acceptor, hydrogen-bonding interactions, and so forth. On the basis of these interactions, successful separation and higher shape selectivity were achieved among several analytes that vary in polarity under both reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography conditions. Therefore, SiO2@CTP microspheres combine the advantages of good column packing properties of the uniform monodisperse silica microspheres and the recognition performance of CTP, generating flexible selectivity and application prospect for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic analytes.

This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of Yu-Ping-Feng-San (YPFS) on attenuating allergic inflammation in the initial stage of atopic dermatitis (AD). AD mouse model was established with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) sensitization and elicitation. Epithelial barrier structure was observed with transmission electron microscope. The populations of dendritic cells (DCs) and group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) were detected by flow cytometry. Human immortalized keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells were stimulated with Poly(I:C)/TNF-α in vitro to assessthymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), interleukin (IL)-33 and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) levels or expressions by immunofluorescence, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot. In the initial stage of AD, ear swelling and infiltration of inflammatory cells in ear tissues were markedly attenuated with YPFS treatments. The damaged structures of ear epithelium and the increased levels of Th2-cytokines induced by FITC were significantly rescued in YPFS-treated mice. The production of pro-allergic cytokines, TSLP and IL-33, as well as the cell populations of their target cells DCs and ILC2s were decreased in AD model, respectively. Likewise, the levels of TSLP and IL-33 in Poly(I:C)/TNF-α-stimulated HaCaT cells showed the same results. Lower levels of p-NF-κB were detected with YPFS treatment, and the expressions of TSLP and IL-33 could be further decreased with inhibiting of NF-κB. Therefore, YPFS attenuates allergic inflammation in the initial stage of AD probably through regulating NF-κB-TSLP/IL-33 pathway, which may provide a novel effective target for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases.

Objective: The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) fMRI technique was used to study the changes of spontaneous brain activity in patients with diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy (DRN), and to explore the application of ALFF technique in the potential prediction and the targeted prevention of diabetic microangiopathy. Methods: Nineteen patients with diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy and 19 healthy controls (HCs) were matched for age and gender. Spontaneous cerebral activity variations were investigated using the ALFF technique. The average ALFF values of the DRN patients and the HCs were classified utilizing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: In contrast to the results in the HCs, the patients with DRN had significantly higher ALFF values in the cerebellum (bilaterally in the posterior and anterior lobes) and the left inferior temporal gyrus, but the ALFF values of the bilateral medial frontal gyrus, right superior temporal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, left middle/inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral precuneus, and left inferior parietal lobule were lower. ROC curve analysis of each brain region showed the accuracy of AUC was excellent. However, the mean ALFF values in the different regions did not correlate with clinical performance. The subjects showed abnormal neuronal synchronization in many areas of the brain, which is consistent with cognitive and visual functional deficits. Conclusion: Abnormal spontaneous activity was detected in many areas of the brain, which may provide useful information for understanding the pathology of DRN. Abnormal ALFF values of these brain regions may be of predictive value in the development of early DRN and be a targeted intervention indicator for individualized treatment of diabetic microvascular diseases.

Breast milk is recognized and strongly recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the optimal feeding for all babies. Breastfeeding is associated with better nutritional and non-nutritional outcomes when compared to formula feeding, and has proven health benefits to both infants and their mothers. This clinical research is to examine the feasibility and efficacy of Acupoint-Tuina therapy in treating postpartum women who underwent C-sections and suffered from insufficient milk production.The patients in the control group received standard medical care, while the patients in the Tuina group received Tuina therapy during the next 48 hours in addition to standard care, given once daily for 2 days. To evaluate the efficacy of Tuina therapy, patients of both groups were assessed for surface temperature of breasts, volume of breasts, volume of breast milk production, serum PRL level, and uterus recovery at various time points.Tuina therapy significantly increased the milk production when compared to the control group, for as much as 13-fold and 10-fold of that in the control group on the third and fourth postpartum days. In addition, Tuina therapy also significantly increased the full breast enlargement and the serum PRL level change, and decreased the breast surface temperature rise. Last but not the least, Tuina therapy also accelerated the post-surgery recovery of uterus.During the early postpartum days, Tuina therapy increases the milk production and promotes other physiological changes supporting lactation for postpartum women with C-section delivery and insufficient breast milk production. The novel intervention is warranted for further investigation and validation.

BACKGROUND: Acitretin and matrine have been used in the treatment of psoriasis in China. This study was designed to investigate the role and related mechanisms of matrine alone and in combination with acitretin in the treatment of psoriasis in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: HaCaT cells were treated with matrine at different concentrations of 0 (blank control), 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 mg/mL for 24, 48, 72 h, respectively. 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium cell viability assay was used to assess the growth and proliferation of HaCaT cells. Cell cycle and apoptosis were detected by flow cytometry. Expression of protein was detected by Western blotting. Autophagy was observed by transmission electron microscopy. Then HaCaT cells were assigned to normal saline (NS) control group, matrine (0.4 mg/mL) group, acitretin (10 µmol/L) group, and matrine plus acitretin group, and the above methods were repeated. In animal experiments, the cumulative score (erythema, scaling, thickening) as a measure of the severity of inflammation was used to measure the skin performance of mice after treated with matrine 50 mg/kg, acitretin 4.5 mg/kg or combination of the two drugs on the psoriasis-like mouse models, respectively. Pathological findings of the lesions were observed, and the protein expressions in the lesions were detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Cell proliferation inhibition was seen in HaCaT cells with treatment of matrine in a dose- and time-dependent manner (P < 0.01, respectively). Cell cycle G0/G1 phase arrest was observed in a dose-dependent way (P < 0.01). The expression of p21 (P < 0.05), LC3II/I (P < 0.01), and Beclin 1 (P < 0.01) increased and the expression of cyclin D1 (P < 0.05) decreased with increasing doses of matrine. Compared with the blank control, more autophagosomes were seen in HaCaT cells treated with matrine at 0.4 mg/mL by transmission electron microscopy (2.667 ±â€Š1.202 vs. 21.33 ±â€Š1.453, t = 9.899, P < 0.01). Cell proliferation inhibition and degree of the G0/G1 phase arrest was significantly higher in matrine plus acitretin group than those in matrine, acitretin, or the NS control group (P < 0.01, respectively). Compared with matrine or acitretin group, the expression of p21 (P < 0.05, P < 0.05) and LC3II/I (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) in matrine plus acitretin group increased significantly and the expression of cyclin D1 (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) and p62 (P < 0.05, P < 0.05) was reduced significantly. Compared with matrine or acitretin, matrine plus acitretin significantly down-regulated the phosphorylation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway (P < 0.05) and its downstream p-p70S6K (P < 0.05). In addition, the cumulative score of mice in the matrine plus acitretin group was significantly better than that in the matrine or acitretin group (1.480 ±â€Š0.230 vs. 2.370 ±â€Š0.241, P < 0.01; 1.480 ±â€Š0.230 vs. 2.888 ±â€Š0.341, P < 0.01). The expression of LC3 protein in the matrine plus acitretin group was also higher than that in the matrine, acitretin, or the NS control group (P < 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Matrine has therapeutic potentials for psoriasis. Matrine and acitretin show synergistic effect via cell cycle arrest and autophagy induction by PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway.

Background: Over recent years, some researchers believe that diabetic nephropathy (DN) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) both independently increase the incidence of brain diseases, such as stroke, cerebral infarction, and cerebral hemorrhage. In the present study, we used the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method to investigate potential changes of functional network brain activity in patients with DN and retinopathy (DNR). Methods: Twenty DNR patients (9 men, 11 women) and 20 healthy controls (HCs; 9 men, 11 women) were recruited; the controls were matched for age, sex, and educational background. All subjects underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Ophthalmoscopy, renal biopsy and single-photon emission computed tomography were used to evaluate microvascular lesions in the eye and kidney. Data were categorized using receiver operating characteristic curves, and correlation analysis was performed using Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: Compared with HCs, DNR patients showed reduced mean DC values in the right inferior temporal gyrus (RITG) and left subcallosal gyrus regions (LSG) and increased mean DC values in the bilateral precuneus (BP). Moreover, mean DC in the BP was correlated with renal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; r = 0.762). The area under the curve (AUC) value was 0.829 for BP and 0.839 for RITG and LSG. Conclusion: DNR patients showed dysfunction in three different brain regions. The linear correlation between eGFR and mean brain DC values indicates the presence of common diabetic microangiopathy in the brain and kidney, which may provide new ideas for multiorgan microvascular lesions of diabetics.

Substantial harm to ecosystems from the use of chemical pesticides has led to an increasing interest in the use of biopesticides to control grasshoppers in rangelands, including China. One such potential biopesticide for control of grasshoppers is the fungus Paranosema locustae. In this study, the dynamics of aboveground natural enemies of grasshoppers and arthropod diversity 0-9 years after application of P. locustae were investigated in rangeland in Qinghai Plateau, China. We found that the number of species and of individuals of aboveground natural enemies increased by 17-250% and 40-126%, respectively, after spraying P. locustae, and that the main natural enemies showed three peaks after treatment. The conventional indices of species diversity (H') and evenness (J') increased by 11-267% and 13-171%, respectively, after treatment with P. locustae. The results showed the positive effects of P. locustae on aboveground natural enemies and biodiversity in an arthropod community in Chinese rangeland. Paranosema locustae is thought to be a safe biological control agent for grasshopper management in Northwestern China.

Background/aims: Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a class of newly discovered endogenous noncoding RNAs, have shown large capabilities in gene regulation. Patients with the grade 3 endometrial cancer (EC) have a generally poor prognosis, and the specific role of circRNAs in the grade 3 EC remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the roles of circRNAs in the grade 3 EC. Methods: In the current study, we screened the expression profiles of circRNAs taken from two women with the grade 3 EC and adjacent non-cancerous endometrial tissue using circRNAs sequencing. Bioinformatic analyses were applied to study these differentially expressed circRNAs. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) of six dysregulated circRNAs was performed to validate the sequencing results. Bioinformatic analyses, including the negative correlation network analyses of circRNAs-microRNAs (miRNAs)-messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and the Cytoscape, were used to delineate the interaction of circRNAs/miRNAs of the entire network. Results: Data of circRNA sequencing showed a significant change in 75,928 unique circRNAs (P<0.05). The upregulated hsa_circ_0039569 and hsa_circ_0001610 and downregulated hsa_circ_0000437, hsa_circ_0001776, and hsa_circ_0009043 were validated by qRT-PCR analysis. Using bioinformatical methods, we found that hsa_circ_0039569 has the MRE of hsa-miR-542-3p and hsa-let-7c-5p. Hsa-miR-542-3p and hsa-let-7c-5p were downregulated in the grade 3 EC validated by qRT-PCR analysis. In the clinicopathological parameters, the expression level of hsa_circ_0039569 was significantly correlated with tumor differentiation (P=0.001). Conclusion: This is the first study demonstrated that there were a lot of differences between the tissue of the grade 3 EC and adjacent non-cancerous endometrial in circRNA expression and may offer novel molecular candidates for diagnosis and clinical treatment of the grade 3 EC.
