Interoception is believed to underlie socio-cognitive functions which are often impaired in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In this study, Experiment 1 examined in a sample of 114 neurotypical college students the associations among autistic traits, alexithymia, and interoceptive accuracy (IA), which was assessed by a novel paradigm "Eye-tracking Interoceptive Accuracy Task (EIAT). In Experiment 2, EIAT and the Autism Spectrum Quotient were administered to 52 preschool children, 50 adolescents, and 50 adults. Experiment 1 supported the association between autistic traits and alexithymia, but failed to support their association with multidimensional interoception. Experiment 2 strongly supported the association between age and IA. We conclude that cardiac IA differs between neurotypical age groups, but shows limited relationship with autistic traits.

Interoceptive accuracy has been widely measured using the Heartbeat Tracking Test (HTT). We devised the novel paradigm of Interoception-Exteroception Synchronicity Judgement (IESJ) task to assess participants' interoceptive accuracy, exteroceptive accuracy, and the balancing score which reflected the ability to allocate attentions between interoceptive and exteroceptive signals. This study administered the behavioural paradigms of the HTT and the IESJ as well as other self-report scales to 119 typically-developing youths. Individuals with lower autistic traits (n = 30) showed comparable interoceptive accuracy, exteroceptive accuracy, and balancing scores as their higher autistic traits counterparts (n = 33). Taken together, the high autistic traits subgroup exhibited higher levels of alexithymia but not empathy or interoception than the low autistic traits subgroup.

Suicide is commonly found in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), while the associations among depressive symptoms and their relationships with suicidal risk remain unclear. This study identified the symptoms associated with suicidal risk and the most central symptoms in the MDD networks based on both self-reported and clinical-interview scales. A total of 446 outpatients with MDD were recruited. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) was used to assess the suicidal risk. The 13-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-13) and 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) were used to measure the depressive symptoms. Network analysis was used to estimate the network models. Ten symptoms in the BDI-13 network were related to suicidal risk, among which sadness had the strongest association. Among the six symptoms in the HAMD-17 network that were associated with suicidal risk, guilty feeling was the strongest. Sense of failure was the most central symptom in the BDI-13 network, while depressed mood had the highest centrality in the HAMD-17 network. The depressive symptoms related to suicide risk and the clinical features of MDD showed different characteristics based on different assessment types. Combining self-reported and clinician-rated assessments in future studies and clinical practice might lead to some new findings.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient for plant growth, development and production. However, little is known about the effects of P deficiency on nutrient absorption, photosynthetic apparatus performance and antioxidant metabolism in citrus. Seedlings of 'sour pummelo' (Citrus grandis) were irrigated with a nutrient solution containing 0.2 mM (Control) or 0 mM (P deficiency) KH2PO4 until saturated every other day for 16 weeks. P deficiency significantly decreased the dry weight (DW) of leaves and stems, and increased the root/shoot ratio in C. grandis but did not affect the DW of roots. The decreased DW of leaves and stems might be induced by the decreased chlorophyll (Chl) contents and CO2 assimilation in P deficient seedlings. P deficiency heterogeneously affected the nutrient contents of leaves, stems and roots. The analysis of Chl a fluorescence transients showed that P deficiency impaired electron transport from the donor side of photosystem II (PSII) to the end acceptor side of PSI, which showed a greater impact on the performance of the donor side of PSII than that of the acceptor side of PSII and photosystem I (PSI). P deficiency increased the contents of ascorbate (ASC), H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and glutathione reductase (GR) in leaves. In contrast, P deficiency increased the ASC content, reduced the glutathione (GSH) content and the activities of SOD, CAT, APX and monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), but did not increase H2O2 production, anthocyanins and MDA content in roots. Taking these results together, we conclude that P deficiency affects nutrient absorption and lowers photosynthetic performance, leading to ROS production, which might be a crucial cause of the inhibited growth of C. grandis.

Self-germinated seedlings of Citrus sinensis and C. grandis were supplied with nutrient solution with 0 mM AlCl3·6H2O (control, -Al) or 1 mM AlCl3·6H2O (+Al) for 18 weeks. The DW (Dry weights) of leaf, stem, shoot and the whole plant of C. grandis were decreased and the ratio of root DW to shoot DW in C. grandis were increased by Al, whereas these parameters of C. sinensis were not changed by Al. Al treatment dramatically decreased the sulfur (S) content in C. grandis roots and the phosphorus (P) content in both C. sinensis and C. grandis roots. More Al was transported to shoots and leaves in C. grandis than in C. sinensis under Al treatment. Al treatment has more adverse effects on C. grandis than on C. sinensis, as revealed by the higher production of superoxide anion (O2 ·-), H2O2 and thiobarbituric acid reactive substace (TBARS) content in C. grandis roots. Via the Illumina sequencing technique, we successfully identified and quantified 12 and 16 differentially expressed miRNAs responding to Al stress in C. sinensis and C. grandis roots, respectively. The possible mechanism underlying different Al tolerance of C. sinensis and C. grandis were summarized as having following aspects: (a) enhancement of adventitious and lateral root development (miR160); (b) up-regulation of stress and signaling transduction related genes, such as SGT1, PLC and AAO (miR477, miR397 and miR398); (c) enhancement of citrate secretion (miR3627); (d) more flexible control of alternative glycolysis pathway and TCA cycle (miR3627 and miR482); (e) up-regulation of S-metabolism (miR172); (f) more flexible control of miRNA metabolism. For the first time, we showed that root development (miR160) and cell wall components (cas-miR5139, csi-miR12105) may play crucial roles in Al tolerance in citrus plants. In conclusion, our study provided a comprehensive profile of differentially expressed miRNAs in response to Al stress between two citrus plants differing in Al tolerance which further enriched our understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying Al tolerance in plants.

INTRODUCTION: Alteration of empathy is common in patients with psychiatric disorders. Reliable and valid assessment tools for measuring empathy of clinical samples is needed. The Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy (QCAE) is a newly-developed instrument to capture cognitive and affective components of empathy. This study aimed to validate the QCAE and compared self-reported empathy between clinical groups with varied psychiatric diagnoses and healthy sample. METHODS: The present study performed factor analysis for the QCAE on clinical samples in the Chinese setting (n = 534), including patients with schizophrenia (n = 158), bipolar disorder (n = 213) and major depressive disorder (n = 163). Internal consistency, internal correlation and convergent validity was examined in the subsample (n = 361). Group comparison among patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and healthy controls (n = 107) was conducted to assess the discriminant validity. RESULTS: Our results indicated acceptable factor model, good reliability and validity of the QCAE. Impaired cognitive empathy was found in clinical samples, especially in patients with schizophrenia, while higher affective empathy was found in patients with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. CONCLUSION: The QCAE is a useful tool in assessing empathy in patients with varied psychiatric diagnoses.

In this study, we applied brain grey matter volume and structural covariance methods on T1 weighted images to delineate potential structural brain changes in individuals with high schizotypy, who were defined as healthy individuals scoring in the top tenth percentile of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ). Eighty-seven college students with high schizotypy and 122 controls were recruited in China. Differences in grey matter volume and volume covariance between the two groups, and correlations of grey matter volume with SPQ scores in the high schizotypy group were examined. We found that individuals with high schizotypy had decreased grey matter volume at the left medial superior frontal gyrus (medsFG) extending towards the superior frontal gyrus, decreased structural covariance within the right medsFG, between the right superior frontal gyrus (sFG), the right superior temporal gyrus and the right anterior insula; and increased structural covariance between the caudate and the right inferior temporal gyrus. Correlation analysis revealed that grey matter volume of the left middle temporal pole and the right sFG correlated positively with the SPQ total scores, volume of the bilateral cerebellum 9 sub-region correlated negatively with the SPQ cognitive-perceptual sub-scale scores, volume of the bilateral striatum correlated positively with the SPQ interpersonal sub-scale scores, and volume of the bilateral superior temporal pole correlated positively with the SPQ disorganization sub-scale scores in the high schizotypy group. These results highlight important grey matter structural changes in the medsFG in individuals with high schizotypy.

In this study, we examined differences in resting-state functional connectivity between sub-regions of the Default Mode Network (DMN) and whole brain voxels in 22 individuals with high schizo-obsessive traits (SOT), 30 with high schizotypal traits (SCT) alone, 20 with high obsessive-compulsive traits (OCT) alone and 30 with low trait scores (LT). We found that the SOT group showed the most reduced functional connectivity within the DMN compared with the other groups. The SOT group also showed increased connectivity between the DMN and the Salience Network, and between the DMN and the Auditory Network compared with the LT group. The SCT group exhibited increased connectivity between the DMN and the Salience Network, and between the DMN and the Executive Control Network (ECN) compared with the LT group. The OCT group exhibited decreased connectivity within the DMN, between the DMN and the Salience Network, and between the DMN and the ECN compared with the LT group. These findings highlight different changes in DMN-related functional connectivity associated with high SOT, SCT and OCT traits and may provide insight into the dysfunctional brain networks in the early stage of schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Schizotypy refers to schizophrenia-like traits below the clinical threshold in the general population. The pathological development of schizophrenia has been postulated to evolve from the initial coexistence of 'brain disconnection' and 'brain connectivity compensation' to 'brain connectivity decompensation'. METHODS: In this study, we examined the brain connectivity changes associated with schizotypy by combining brain white matter structural connectivity, static and dynamic functional connectivity analysis of diffusion tensor imaging data and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data. A total of 87 participants with a high level of schizotypal traits and 122 control participants completed the experiment. Group differences in whole-brain white matter structural connectivity probability, static mean functional connectivity strength, dynamic functional connectivity variability and stability among 264 brain sub-regions of interests were investigated. RESULTS: We found that individuals with high schizotypy exhibited increased structural connectivity probability within the task control network and within the default mode network; increased variability and decreased stability of functional connectivity within the default mode network and between the auditory network and the subcortical network; and decreased static mean functional connectivity strength mainly associated with the sensorimotor network, the default mode network and the task control network. CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the specific changes in brain connectivity associated with schizotypy and indicate that both decompensatory and compensatory changes in structural connectivity within the default mode network and the task control network in the context of whole-brain functional disconnection may be an important neurobiological correlate in individuals with high schizotypy.

Deficit in decision-making has been found in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD), respectively, while the common and distinct characteristics of this deficit among these patients are still unclear. The present study aimed to make a transdiagnostic comparison of the affective decision-making ability in patients with SCZ, MDD, and BD. In this study, 33 patients with SCZ, 23 patients with MDD, 29 patients with BD, and 34 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited and the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) was used to assess the affective decision-making ability. The results showed that all three diagnostic groups tended to select the disadvantageous decks but not advantageous decks compared to HCs. For patients with SCZ, an excessive preference for the disadvantageous decks with larger-magnitude less frequent punishments (deck B) may be the main reason of the deficit in affective decision-making, while that in patients with MDD was a significantly decreased ability to choose advantageous decks on the whole but with larger-magnitude less frequent punishments (deck D). As regards patients with BD, the concurrence of more choices of deck B and fewer choices of deck D was the characteristic of the deficit in affective decision-making. Our findings suggest a common affective decision-making impairment in the context of multiple choices in patients with SCZ, MDD, and BD, while the underlying mechanisms of the impairment among these patients may be slightly different.

Failure in translating emotional salience into effortful behavior is thought to be a core feature of anhedonia and avolition in individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ), but little is known about emotion-behavior coupling in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). In this study, we compared emotion-behavior correspondence in participants with SCZ, BD, and MDD. Forty-two participants with SCZ, 44 participants with MDD, 43 participants with BD, and 43 healthy controls were recruited. A computerized anticipatory and consummatory pleasure task was used to evaluate emotion-behavior correspondence. Clinical ratings of negative symptoms and self-report anhedonia questionnaires were also administered. We found that participants with SCZ, MDD, and BD exhibited different levels of negative symptoms and self-reported anhedonia, as well as emotion-behavior decoupling. In SCZ participants, both desirable and undesirable images elicited lower correspondence between self-reported liking and behavior. In MDD and BD participants, undesirable images elicited lower emotion-behavior correspondence under both direct stimulus presentation and representation conditions, whereas deficits in emotion-behavior coupling under desirable conditions were only observed when stimuli were present. Taken together, emotion-behavior decoupling showed both common and unique patterns in participants with SCZ, MDD, and BD, and showed some associations with negative symptoms and anhedonia across the combined clinical sample. RESUMO

The present study validated the Chinese version of the Anticipatory and Consummatory Interpersonal Pleasure Scale (ACIPS) in a group of patients with mental disorders. The results replicated the four-factor structure of the ACIPS in a Chinese setting and showed good discrimination validity.

Amotivational symptoms are observed in schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Effort-cost computation may be a potential contributor to amotivation transdiagnostically. This study examined effort-cost computation in these three diagnostic groups. This study recruited 141 outpatients (49 SCZ, 52 non-psychotic BD, and 40 non-psychotic MDD) and 57 healthy controls (HCs). We administered the Effort-Expenditure for Reward Task (EEfRT), which manipulated different levels of reward magnitude and probability relating to a high and low physical effort task. There were significant interactions between group and reward magnitude, group and reward probability, and group and expected value on the percentage of high-effort choices. SCZ, BD, and MDD patients made comparably fewer high-effort choices than HCs in the high-reward magnitude, high-reward probability, and high-expected-value conditions. Self-reported amotivation did not correlate with decision-making on the EEfRT. Our findings suggest that reduced effort expenditure for reward is a transdiagnostic phenotype in SCZ, BD, and MDD.

BACKGROUND: Many patients have inadequate long-term analgesia, respiratory distress, and hypoxemia due to a long-standing substantial smoking history or the presence of primary pulmonary diseases; analgesic treatment is not valid in these patients. Even if the imaging findings of rib fractures are relatively mild, rib fractures may cause severe position limitation, respiratory distress, and hypoxemia. AIM: To investigate the curative effect of surgical treatment for patients with severe non-flail chest rib fractures. METHODS: A total of 78 patients from our hospital with severe noncontinuous thoracic rib fractures from September 2016 to September 2018 were enrolled in our study. Thirty-nine patients underwent surgical treatment, and 39 underwent conservative treatment. The surgical treatment group received surgery performed with titanium plates, and the screws were inserted with open reduction and internal fixation. The conservative treatment group received analgesia and symptomatic treatment. The pain scores at 72 h, 1 wk, 2 wk, 4 wk, 6 wk, 3 mo, and 6 mo were compared, and the SF-36 quality of life scores were compared atthe 3rd and 6th months. RESULTS: Pain relief in the surgical group was significantly better than that in the conservative group at each time point (72 h, 1 wk, 2 wk, 4 wk, 6 wk, 3 mo, and 6 mo after surgery, P < 0.001). ( The SF-36 scores were significantly higher in the surgical group than in the conservative group at 1 mo and 6 mo (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with severe non-flail chest rib fractures have a better quality of life following surgical treatment than following conservative treatment, and surgical treatment is also useful for relieving pain. We should pay more attention to the physiological functions and clinical manifestations of patients with severe rib fractures. In patients with non-flail chest rib fractures, surgical treatment is feasible and effective.

We examined prospective memory (PM) function in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A group of 28 children with ADHD and 28 typically developing children completed event-, time- and activity-based PM tasks and attention tests. ADHD children had impaired attention but intact PM performance. Both groups performed best in activity-based PM tasks, followed by event-based PM tasks, and performed worst in time-based PM tasks. ADHD children had lower ongoing task performance in the event-based PM task. The findings indicate that children with ADHD may have an intact PM, but this may be at the cost of ongoing task performance.

Citrus grandis seedlings were irrigated with nutrient solutions with four Al-P combinations [two Al levels (0 mM and 1.2 mM AlCl3·6H2O) × two P levels (0 µM and 200 µM KH2PO4)] for 18 weeks. Al dramatically inhibited the growth of C. grandis seedlings, as revealed by a decreased dry weight of roots and shoots. Elevating P level could ameliorate the Al-induced growth inhibition and organic acid (malate and citrate) secretion in C. grandis. Using a comparative proteomic approach revealed by the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) technique, 318 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) were successfully identified and quantified in this study. The possible mechanisms underlying P-induced alleviation of Al toxicity in C. grandis were proposed. Furthermore, some DAPs, such as GLN phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate amidotransferase 2, ATP-dependent caseinolytic (Clp) protease/crotonase family protein, methionine-S-oxide reductase B2, ABC transporter I family member 17 and pyridoxal phosphate phosphatase, were reported for the first time to respond to Al stress in Citrus plants. Our study provides some proteomic details about the alleviative effects of P on Al toxicity in C. grandis, however, the exact function of the DAPs identified herein in response to Al tolerance in plants must be further investigated.

Aluminum (Al) treatment significantly decreased the dry weight (DW) of stem, shoot and whole plant of both Citrus sinensis and C. grandis, but did not change that of root. Al significantly decreased leaf DW of C. grandis, increased the ratio of root to shoot and the lignin content in roots of both species. The higher content of Al in leaves and stems and lignin in roots of C. grandis than that of C. sinensis might be due to the over-expression of Al sensitive 3 (ALS3) and cinnamyl alcohol deaminase (CAD) in roots of C. grandis, respectively. By using yeast-two-hybridazation (Y2H) and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) techniques, we obtained the results that glutathione S-transferase (GST), vacuolar-type proton ATPase (V-ATPase), aquaporin PIP2 (PIP2), ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 13 (UCT13), putative dicyanin blue copper protein (DCBC) and uncharacterized protein 2 (UP2) were interacted with ALS3 and GST, V-ATPase, Al sensitive 3 (ALS3), cytochrome P450 (CP450), PIP2, uncharacterized protein 1 (UP1) and UP2 were interacted with CAD. Annotation analysis revealed that these proteins were involved in detoxification, cellular transport, post-transcriptional modification and oxidation-reduction homeostasis or lignin biosynthesis in plants. Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis further revealed that the higher gene expression levels of most of these interacting proteins in C. grandis roots than that in C. sinensis ones were consistent with the higher contents of lignin in C. grandis roots and Al absorbed by C. grandis. In conclusion, our study identified some key interacting components of Al responsive proteins ALS3 and CAD, which could further help us to understand the molecular mechanism of Al tolerance in citrus plants and provide new information to the selection and breeding of tolerant cultivars, which are cultivated in acidic areas.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is one of the major constraining factors that limit the yield and quality of agricultural products. Uniform seedlings of the Citrus sinensis were irrigated with Mg deficient (0 mM MgSO4) and Mg sufficient (1 mM MgSO4) nutrient solutions for 16 weeks. CO2 assimilation, starch, soluble carbohydrates, TBARS content and H2O2 production were measured. Transcriptomic analysis of C. sinensis leaves was performed by Illumina sequencing. Our results showed that Mg deficiency decreased CO2 assimilation, but increased starch, sucrose, TBARS content and H2O2 production in C. sinensis leaves. A total of 4864 genes showed differential expression in response to Mg deficiency revealed by RNA-Seq and the transcriptomic data were further validated by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis indicated that the mechanisms underlying Mg deficiency tolerance in C. sinensis may be attributed to the following aspects: a) enhanced microtubule-based movement and cell cycle regulation; b) elevated signal transduction in response to biotic and abiotic stimuli; c) alteration of biological processes by tightly controlling phosphorylation especially protein phosphorylation; d) down-regulation of light harvesting and photosynthesis due to the accumulation of carbohydrates; e) up-regulation of cell wall remodeling and antioxidant system. Our results provide a comprehensive insight into the transcriptomic profile of key components involved in the Mg deficiency tolerance in C. sinensis and enrich our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which plants adapted to a Mg deficient condition.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been demonstrated to participate in a variety of human cancers by functioning as post-transcriptional regulators of oncogenes or antioncogenes including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The aim of the current study was to identify the role of miR-422a in NSCLC via sulfatase 2 (SULF2) to further elucidate the mechanism of NSCLC. Initially, the expression of miR-422a and SULF2 was determined in NSCLC tissues and cells. The role of miR-422a in NSCLC was identified in relation with a miR-422a mimic or inhibitor, siRNA against SULF2 and TGF-ß1. The regulatory effects of miR-422a were examined following detection of the related epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related genes, and the apoptosis-related genes and evaluation of their cellular biological functions. The expression pattern of miR-422a, SULF2, and the TGF-ß/SMAD pathway-related genes was detected to elucidate the mechanism by which miR-422a influences the progression of NSCLC. Finally, xenograft tumors in nude mice were observed for tumorigenicity evaluation purposes. Our results showed that miR-422a was poorly expressed while SULF2 was highly expressed in NSCLC. Dual luciferase reporter gene assay further verified that miR-422a targeted SULF2. Altogether, this study demonstrated that miR-422a downregulated SULF2 to inhibit the TGF-ß/SMAD pathway. NSCLC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, colony formation, EMT and tumorigenesis were all inhibited while apoptosis was promoted upon restoration of miR-422a or silencing of SULF2. However, the activation of the TGF-ß/SMAD pathway was determined to reverse the tumor-suppressive effects of si-SULF2. miR-422a restoration, which ultimately inhibited the progression of NSCLC by suppressing the TGF-ß/SMAD pathway via SULF2.
