RESUMO

Reflection-type photoplethysmography (PPG) pulse sensors are widely used in consumer markets to measure cardiovascular signals. Different from off-chip package solutions in which the light-emitting diode (LED) and photodetector (PD) are in separate chips, a GaN integrated optoelectronic chip with a novel ring structure is proposed to realize a PPG pulse sensor. The integrated optoelectronic chip consists of two multiple-quantum well (MQW) diodes. For higher sensitivities, the central and peripheral MQW diodes are suitable as the LED and PD, respectively. The results indicate that the integrated optoelectronic chip based on a blue LED epitaxial wafer is more suitable for the integrated PPG sensor based on device performance. Moreover, the amplitude of the PPG pulse signal collected from fingertips is higher than that from a wrist. The feasibility of the reflection-type PPG pulse sensor based on a GaN integrated optoelectronic chip is fully verified with the advantages of smaller sizes and lower costs.

The burgeoning field of astrophotonics, the interface between astronomy and photonics, is redefining astronomical instrumentation to replace traditional bulk optical systems with integrated optics. This drives the development of a new promising photonics-integrated interferometric imaging technique, called the segmented planar imaging detector for electro-optical reconnaissance (SPIDER). Compared to conventional imaging systems, SPIDER can reduce the size, weight, and power (SWaP) by one to two orders of magnitude for an equivalent imaging resolution in virtue of photonics-integrated technology. However, SPIDER has a dense lens distribution and tens of separated narrow wavebands demultiplexed by array waveguide gratings. In this paper, we developed a new simplified sparse-aperture photonics-integrated interferometer (SPIN) imaging system. The SPIN imaging system was no more a Michelson configuration interferometer as SPIDER and was designed as a Fizeau configuration interferometer imaging system. This transfer of configuration type affords a more concise structure; the SPIN was designed with much less apertures and fewer wavebands than those of SPIDER. Further, the SPIN yields enhanced modulation transfer function and imaging quality with equivalent aperture diameter, compared with SPIDER. The main barrier of this transfer is the elimination of coupling restriction at the tip of a waveguide, namely the apodization effect. This effect, which is caused by the coupling effect between Fourier lens and waveguide, hinders SPIN imaging systems from getting finer resolution. However, a microscope could be used to eliminate this effect. Moreover, a waveguide array is used to receive these finer details and enlarges the field of view in SPIN. The coupling efficiency of the waveguides and crosstalk errors between waveguides of array were analyzed, which are important for proper parameters setting in SPIN imaging system. Based on these analyses, the imaging principle was derived and a hyper-Laplacian-based imaging reconstruction algorithm was developed. A simulation of the SPIN imaging system with seven apertures and one imaging waveband demonstrated the high imaging quality.

Dabieshan tick virus (DTV) was first identified in Haemaphysalis longicornis from Hubei Province, China in 2015. However, its pathogenic potential to animals and human remains to be further explored. In this study, a total of 170 engorged ticks and 22 sheep serum samples were collected from Taian and Yantai city, Shandong Province to investigate the presence of DTV. The results of qRT-PCR revealed the positive rate of 13.6% (3/22) in sheep serum and 8.2% (14/170) in attached ticks, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated a close evolutionary relationship among those DTV isolates from animal and ticks, and DTV might be relatively conservative in evolution. These findings are the first to demonstrate molecular evidence of DTV in domestic animals. Nonetheless, whether or not causing disease in animals, DTV deserves further investigation.

Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a promising technology that can be a candidate to improve the communication capacity and speed in aquatic media. The aim of this study is to examine the performance of a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array-based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) UWOC system. A SiPM is a modern solid-state photodetector with extremely high sensitivity up to the single-photon level or a photon-counting ability, which helps in detecting extremely weak light signals after long-distance underwater channel attenuation. We clarify the basic characteristics and photon-counting detection mode of a SiPM. In particular, the photocount of a SiPM is approximated by a Gaussian distribution, and theoretical analysis shows that only 13.3 photons need to be detected during "1" symbol period to achieve a bit error rate of 10-3 in an ambient light environment. Moreover, a SiPM also has a better analog mode detection ability than an avalanche photodiode (APD) and realizes 2 Mbps analog communication owing to its unique array structure and high photon detection efficiency. Furthermore, MIMO, i.e., spatial diversity, is applied as an effective method to relax the link alignment, improve the system performance, and alleviate the effect of optical turbulence. In our experiment, with a photon-counting 6×3 MIMO scheme, an energy per bit of 7.38×10-9 J/bit is achieved at a scintillation index of 4.66×10-3 in a 10 m water tank with 1 Mbps on-off-keying (OOK) modulation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on a MIMO-UWOC system based on the photon-counting mode of a SiPM array. This UWOC system combines the advantages of SiPMs and the MIMO scheme and has the potential to realize long-distance UWOC under optical turbulence.

An aromatic trifluoromethyl ketone moiety was characterized as a new warhead for covalently reversible kinase inhibitor design to target the non-catalytic cysteine residue. Potent and selective covalently reversible inhibitors of FGFR4 kinase were successfully designed and synthesized by utilizing this new warhead. The binding mode of a representative inhibitor was fully characterized by using multiple technologies including MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, dialysis assay and X-ray crystallographic studies etc. This functional group was also successfully applied to discovery of a new JAK3 inhibitor, suggesting its potential application in designing other kinase inhibitors.

The Yersinia outer protein J (YopJ) family effectors are widely deployed through the type III secretion system by both plant and animal pathogens. As non-canonical acetyltransferases, the enzymatic activities of YopJ family effectors are allosterically activated by the eukaryote-specific ligand inositol hexaphosphate (InsP6). However, the underpinning molecular mechanism remains undefined. Here we present the crystal structure of apo-PopP2, a YopJ family member secreted by the plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum. Structural comparison of apo-PopP2 with the InsP6-bound PopP2 reveals a substantial conformational readjustment centered in the substrate-binding site. Combining biochemical and computational analyses, we further identify a mechanism by which the association of InsP6 with PopP2 induces an α-helix-to-ß-strand transition in the catalytic core, resulting in stabilization of the substrate recognition helix in the target protein binding site. Together, our study uncovers the molecular basis governing InsP6-mediated allosteric regulation of YopJ family acetyltransferases and further expands the paradigm of fold-switching proteins.

Integrated transceivers with electro-optic modulation characteristics are valuable for free-space optical communications and sensing. We propose an AlInGaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) transceiver with electro-optic modulation characteristics over a broad spectral range. Two identical AlInGaAs MQW diodes on a single wafer are used to transmit and receive optical signals and provide obvious electro-optic modulation for broad-spectrum light. The photocurrent modulation ratio reaches 13.9 and 11.3 for white light and 1550 nm infrared light, respectively, with varying bias voltages. The transceiver can identify environmental changes and forward electrical signals with different frequencies in the form of superimposed optical signals.

A monolithic photonic chip with multifunctional light emission/detection and electro-optic modulation capabilities in the near-infrared range is proposed and realized on an InP-based wafer. Two identical AlInGaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) diodes operating independently as light emission/detection devices are fabricated using a two-step etching process on a single wafer and connected via a straight waveguide. The photocurrent induced in the MQW diode for the detection process is generated by the infrared light emitted by the MQW diode during the emission process and transmitted via the straight waveguide. The MQW diode has an electro-optic modulation characteristic, and its spectral responsivity exhibits a blueshift with an increasingly negative bias voltage under external infrared laser excitation. An on-chip communication test is conducted to study the potential applications of the proposed monolithic photonic chip for transmission of optical signals in the near-infrared range.

Due to the electro-optic property of InGaN multiple quantum wells, a III-nitride diode can provide light transmission, photo detection, and energy harvesting under different bias conditions. Made of III-nitride diodes arrayed in a single chip, the combination allows the diodes to transmit, detect, and harvest visible light at the same time. Here, we monolithically integrate a III-nitride transmitter, receiver, and energy harvester using a compatible foundry process. By adopting a bottom SiO2/TiO2 distributed Bragg reflector, we present a III-nitride diode with a peak external quantum efficiency of 50.65% at a forward voltage of 2.6 V for light emission, a power conversion efficiency of 6.68% for energy harvesting, and a peak external quantum efficiency of 50.9% at a wavelength of 388 nm for photon detection. The energy harvester generates electricity from ambient light to directly turn the transmitter on. By integrating a circuit, the electrical signals generated by the receiver pulse the emitted light to relay information. The multifunctioning system can continuously operate without an external power supply. Our work opens up a promising approach to develop multicomponent systems with new interactive functions and multitasking devices, due to III-nitride diode arrays that can simultaneously transmit, detect, and harvest light.

The present study was conducted to determine the quality parameters, fatty acid profile, minor compounds (pigments, tocopherols, phenolic compounds, squalene and total sterols) and volatile compounds of olive oils from four common olive cultivars (cv. 'Koroneiki', 'Coratina', 'Frantoio' and 'Arbequina') planted in China. The effect of maturation stage on the characteristics of the oils was also evaluated. All samples were classified as extra virgin according to the standards established by IOC. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the most analytical indicators of the oils among the cultivar and ripening. Coratina oils contained the highest contents of carotenoids, chlorophylls, tocopherols, phenolic compounds and high level of volatiles, demonstrating their excellent nutritional qualities and pleasant flavors. Whereas, Koroneiki oils contained the highest contents of oleic acid and squalene. Further, high levels of total sterols were found in Frantoio and Arbequina oils. Phenolic compounds and volatiles decreased with increase of ripe degree, which indicated the oils from green olive fruits possess better quality and flavor.

BACKGROUND: Elafin is a serine protease inhibitor critical for host defence. We previously reported that Elafin was associated with the recurrence of early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after surgery. However, the exact role of Elafin in HCC remains obscure. METHODS: HCC tissue microarrays were used to investigate the correlation between Elafin expression and the prognosis of HCC patients. In vitro migration, invasion and wound healing assays and in vivo lung metastasis models were used to determine the role of Elafin in HCC metastasis. Mass spectrometry, co-immunoprecipitation, western blotting, and immunofluorescence staining assays were performed to uncover the mechanism of Elafin in HCC. Dual-luciferase reporter and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays were employed to observe the transcriptional regulation of Elafin. RESULTS: Elafin expression was frequently increased in HCC tissues compared to normal tissues, and high Elafin expression in HCC tissues was correlated with aggressive tumour phenotypes and a poor prognosis in HCC patients. Elafin dramatically enhanced the metastasis of HCC cells both in vitro and in vivo by interacting with EGFR and activating EGFR/AKT signalling. Moreover, Elafin attenuated the suppressive effects of erlotinib on HCC metastasis. Besides, Elafin was transcriptionally regulated by Sp1 in HCC cells. Clinically, Elafin expression was positively correlated with Sp1, Vimentin, and EGFR signalling in both our HCC tissue microarrays and TCGA database analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Upregulation of Elafin by Sp1 enhanced HCC metastasis via EGFR/AKT pathway, and overexpression of Elafin attenuated the anti-metastatic effects of erlotinib, suggesting a valuable prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for HCC.

We report a novel monolithically integrated voltage-controlled metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET)-LED device based on a GaN-on-silicon LED epitaxial wafer. An N-channel enhancement mode MOSFET and an InGaN/GaN multiple-quantum-well (MQW) thin-film LED featured with a suspended membrane are in series connection to constitute the monolithically integrated device without external metal interconnection. A recessed gate structure and AlGaN channel are innovatively adopted to realize an enhancement mode transistor. The fabrication of the MOSFET-LED includes no additional ion implantation or epitaxial growth compared with that of a common MQW LED, which greatly simplifies the device structure and production processes. The measured turn-on voltage of the LED is approximately 4 V, and the threshold voltage of the MOSFET is extrapolated as 5.2 V. The results demonstrate relatively good dimming and switching capacities of the integrated MOSFET-LED. This integration scheme also has potential to achieve a large-scale optoelectronic integrated circuit.

Multiple-quantum well (MQW) III-nitride diodes can both emit and detect light. In particular, a III-nitride diode can absorb shorter-wavelength photons generated from another III-nitride diode that shares an identical MQW structure because of the spectral overlap between the emission and detection spectra of the III-nitride diode, which establishes a wireless visible light communication system using two identical III-nitride diodes. Moreover, a wireless light communication system using a modulating retro-reflector (MRR) enables asymmetric optical links, which forms a two-way optical link using a single transmitter and receiver. Here, in association with an MRR, we propose, fabricate, and characterize asymmetric optical links using monolithic III-nitride diodes, where one III-nitride diode functions as a transmitter to emit light, an MRR reflects light with the encoded information, another monolithically integrated III-nitride diode serves as a receiver to absorb the reflected light to convert optical signals into electrical ones, and the encoded information is finally decoded. Advanced monolithic III-nitride asymmetric optical links can be developed toward Internet of Things (IoT) deployment based on such multifunction devices.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Whether surgical resection or repeated ablation should be recommended for intrahepatic recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) conforming to the Milan criteria after initial ablation remains unclear. In this study, we compared the outcomes of patients who underwent surgical resection with those who underwent re-ablation for recurrent HCC after initial curative-intent ablation. METHODS: The data of 28 and 98 patients who underwent surgical resection and re-ablation, respectively, for recurrent HCC after initial ablation between January 2003 and 2017 were analyzed using propensity score matching. RESULTS: Before matching, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were 95.7, 83.0, and 74.4% for the ablation group, compared to 92.9, 89.1, and 70.9% for the resection group (p = 0.490). The corresponding disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 67.5, 40.1, and 25.6% for the ablation group and were 85.4, 59.9, and 53.3% for the resection group (p = 0.018). After matching, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates for the ablation and resection group were 95.2, 85.5 and 81.8% versus 96.0, 96.0, and 76.4%, respectively (p = 0.550). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year DFS rates were 58.0, 39.5, and 29.9% for the ablation group and were 95.8, 67.2, and 59.8% for the resection group (p = 0.004). Cox proportional hazards model identified surgical resection as the only significant prognostic factor for DFS but not for OS. CONCLUSION: For intrahepatic recurrent HCC patients after initial ablation, surgical resection could provide better DFS than re-ablation, while no difference in OS was observed between the 2 treatment groups.

Toroidal dipole response in metamaterials was usually based on a complex structure with special arrangements or symmetries. In this paper, we propose an asymmetric double-disk metamaterial to numerically and experimentally demonstrate the toroidal dipole response in microwave frequency range. When the upper disk has an offset angle θ ranging from 0 to 100 degrees with respect to the lower one, the toroidal dipole resonance always plays the decisive role, which has been proved by calculating the scattered power in terms of the multipole scattering theory. Besides, the dependence of toroidal dipole response on structural parameters has been explored. Our works enrich the research of toroidal moment and, meanwhile, present more application potentials in meta-devices from microwave to optical regime.

Light fidelity (LiFi), which is emerging as a compelling technology paradigm shifting the common means of high-capacity wireless communication technologies, requires wearable and full-duplex compact design because of its great significance in smart wearables as well as the 'Internet of Things'. However, the construction of the key component of wearable full-duplex LiFi, light-emitting/detecting bifunctional fibres, is still challenging because of the conflicting process between carrier separation and recombination, as well as the highly dynamic film-forming process. Here, we demonstrate light-emitting/detecting bifunctional fibres enabled by perovskite QDs with hybrid components. The hybrid perovskite inks endow fibres with super-smooth QD films. This, combined with the small exciton binding energy and high carrier mobility of perovskite QDs, enables successful integration of electroluminescence and photodetection into monofilaments. The bifunctional fibres possess the narrowest electroluminescence full width at half maximum of ~19 nm and, more importantly, the capability for simultaneously transmitting and receiving information. The successful fabrication of narrow emission full-duplex LiFi fibres paves the way for the fabrication and integration of low crosstalk interoperable smart wearables.

PURPOSE: The recurrence after curative hepatectomy is common. Limited data have investigated the effect of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with ablation in treating recurrent intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatectomy. We aim to compare the efficacy of TACE combined with ablation versus TACE alone in treating recurrent intermediate-stage HCC after hepatectomy. METHODS: A total of 183 patients with recurrent intermediate-stage HCC after hepatectomy were enrolled at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Centre, including 111 patients who underwent TACE alone and 72 patients who underwent TACE combined with ablation (TACE-Ablation). Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were compared by the log-rank test. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to reduce the confounding bias. RESULTS: Before PSM, the 5-year OS rates were 43.3% vs. 27.9% (P = 0.001), and the 5-year PFS rates were 21.7% vs. 13.0% (P < 0.001) for TACE-Ablation and TACE-alone groups, respectively. After PSM, TACE-Ablation still resulted in better 5-year OS (41.6% vs. 30.2%, P = 0.028) and 5-year PFS rate (21.3% vs. 15.8%, P = 0.024) than that of TACE alone. Patients in TACE-Ablation group exhibited similar major complication rates to TACE-alone group but higher minor complication rates both before and after PSM. Cox regression analysis identified TACE-alone modality as an independently unfavourable predictor for OS and PFS (both P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: TACE combined with ablation is safe and superior to TACE alone in tumour control and prolonging overall survival in recurrent intermediate-stage HCC after hepatectomy.

Angiogenesis, one of the hallmarks of cancer, is essential for both tumor growth and metastasis. However, its molecular mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are largely unknown. Here, we report the role of HOXA5 in tumor angiogenesis of HCC. Methods: The expression of miR-130b-3p and HOXA5 was determined by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Capillary tube formation assay, chicken chorioallantoic membrane assay, and subcutaneous xenograft experiments were performed to investigate the role of miR-130-3p and HOXA5. Luciferase reporter assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay were performed to evaluate the interaction between Sp1, miR-130b-3p and HOXA5. Results: miR-130b-3p was found up-regulated in HCC and correlated with a poor prognosis. miR-130b-3p promoted HCC angiogenesis both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, HOXA5 was validated as a direct target of miR-130b-3p. Furthermore, we demonstrated that HOXA5 was down-regulated in HCC and its down-regulation was associated with larger tumor size, shorter overall survival, and higher recurrence probability. Moreover, HOXA5 was significantly associated with angiogenesis biomarkers such as CD31 and CD34. Functional studies revealed that the knockdown of HOXA5 also significantly promoted HCC angiogenesis both in vitro and in vivo. Knocking-down HOXA5 significantly provoked HCC cells to induce the capillary tube formation, migration and proliferation of endothelial cells. In xenograft animal models, we found that a decrease of HOXA5 effectively enhanced tumor growth and increased microvessel densities. We further demonstrated that miR-130b-3p could be directly transcriptionally regulated by Sp1. Conclusions: This study showed that a dysregulation in the Sp1/miR-130b-3p/HOXA5 axis contributed to HCC progression and angiogenesis, and that HOXA5 can be considered as a promising therapeutic target for treating HCC.

The main objective of this study was to differentiate twenty-three monovarietal olive oils produced in China (Azappa, Thiaki, Leucocarpa ovoid, manzanillo de labata, etc.) by studying their physicochemical properties, fatty acid profiles and oxidative stability. The majority of analytical indicators had statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). The tested cultivars produced excellent olive oils with an appreciable amount of natural antioxidants and chemical composition within the legal range. Our results demonstrate that Leucocarpa ovoid oil was characterized by high mean levels of total phenols (401.8 mg/kg), oleic acid (79.62%) and oxidative stability (18.64 h). Additionally, five types of olive oil were selected due to their high overall quality. Investigation of virgin olive oils indicates that the differences in the fatty acid profiles, phenols, sterols and tocopherols may be caused by genetic factors. The principal components analysis (PCA) results showed a strong differentiation between various cultivars in regard to their fatty acid composition and phenol, sterol and tocopherol levels. These components can be effective tools for efficient comparison and differentiation of these cultivars. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on the differentiation of the chemical constituents of virgin olive oils.

BACKGROUND: Whether primary tumor location of colorectal cancer (CRC) affects survival of patients after resection of liver metastases remains controversial. This study was conducted to investigate the differences in clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis between right-sided CRC and left-sided CRC patients with liver metastases after hepatectomy. METHODS: From 2002 to 2018, 611 patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) who underwent hepatectomy at our center were reviewed. Primary tumors located from the cecum to transverse colon were defined as right-sided group (n = 141); tumors located from the splenic flexure to rectum were defined as left-sided group (n = 470). Patients were compared between two groups before and after a 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. RESULTS: Before PSM, median survival time and 5-year overall survival (OS) rate in right-sided group were 77 months and 56.3%, and those in left-sided group were 64 months and 51.1%, respectively. After PSM, median survival time and 5-year OS rate in right-sided group were 77 months and 55.9%, and those in left-sided group were 58.8 months and 47.3%, respectively. The OS rates did not differ between two groups before and after PSM (P = 0.575, P = 0.453). However, significant different recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate was found before and after PSM between right-sided and left-sided group (P = 0.028, P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to patients with left-sided primary tumors, patients with right-sided primary tumors had a worse RFS but similar OS. Careful preoperative evaluation, intensive preoperative chemotherapy, and frequent follow-up to detect early recurrence might be justified for CRLM patients with right-sided primary tumors.
