RESUMO

The colloidal delivery systems fabricated by emulsion containing natural proteins and lipids have been utilized to protect carotenoids as well as to release the carotenoids in the simulated in vitro gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In this study, ß-carotene (BC) was embedded into emulsions that were stabilized by scallop gonad protein isolates (SGPIs), and the emulsion droplets containing BC were then entrapped into calcium-alginate beads. The results showed that the oil-in-water emulsions coated by SGPIs only showed good stability at pH 7-8, while the emulsion-alginate beads remained relatively intact at pH 3-8. BC encapsulated in emulsions was extremely unstable and prone to degradation when stored at the comparatively higher temperature (37 °C), whereas the stability of BC was greatly enhanced through incorporation into emulsion-alginate beads. The digestion rate and extent of lipid droplets constructed within SGPIs-stabilized emulsion-alginate beads were slower than that in emulsions during GIT. The confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed that the lipid droplets in emulsions were aggregated after exposure to the mouth and gastric phases, while the emulsion-alginate beads maintained their spherical shape after exposure to the oral and gastric phases. Moreover, the free lipid droplets in the emulsions showed a higher bioaccessibility of BC (66%) than that in the emulsion-alginate beads (38%), whereas the BC transformation was on the contrary. The findings in this study indicated that SGPIs-stabilized emulsion in alginate beads can potentially be utilized for the encapsulation and controlled release of lipophilic bioactive compounds.

Similar to translated thermal ablative techniques in clinic, the occurrence of cellular necrosis during tumor photothermal therapy (PTT) would induce inflammatory responses that are detrimental to therapeutic outcomes. Inspired by the well-known colorimetric Folin-Ciocalteu assay, monodispersed and renal-clearable tungsten (W)-based polyoxometalate nanoclusters (W-POM NCs, average diameter of around 2.0 nm) were successfully obtained here through a facile redox reaction with natural gallic acid in alkaline aqueous solution. Apart from excellent stability in the form of freeze-dried powder, the as-prepared W-POM NCs occupied considerable biocompatibility toward normal cells/tissues both in vitro and in vivo, since no obvious toxicities were observed by treating female Balb/c mice with concentrated W-POM NCs during the 30 day post-treatment period. More importantly, W-POM NCs exhibited not only considerable near-infrared (NIR) light absorption (coloration effect originated from the existence of electron-trapped W5+) for efficient PTT but also impressive anti-inflammatory ability (eliminating inflammation-related reactive oxygen species by the oxidation of W5+ into W6+ state) to achieve better therapeutic outcomes. Thus, our study pioneers the application of POMs for non-inflammatory PTT with expected safety and efficiency.

Health problems caused by environmental pollution may affect the process of urbanization in China. Therefore, this study, against the backdrop of promoting new-type urbanization, evaluates the level of China's urbanization comprehensively using the fully arranged polygon graphical index method. It uses a dynamic threshold panel model to study the potential non-linear relationship between environmental pollution (wastewater, sulfur dioxide, and solid wastes) and urbanization under different health costs of residents. Our findings show that environmental pollution has inhibited the improvement of comprehensive urbanization, population urbanization, economic urbanization, and living conditions urbanization, but promoted living environment urbanization, in China. It is worth noting that with the rise in residents' health costs, the inhibiting effect of environmental pollution on comprehensive urbanization, population urbanization, economic urbanization, and living conditions urbanization in China has gradually increased, but on living environment urbanization, it has decreased.

Background: The traditional transcervical approach is frequently applied but limited in handling the tumors in parapharyngeal space.Objectives: We explore a new transcervical endoscopic approach with more direct visualization, less complications, and better outcomes.Material and methods: Eight cadaver heads (sixteen sides) were prepared for endoscopic dissection. Clinical cases were carefully selected, and thirty patients accepted the transcervical endoscopic surgery.Results: The transcervical approach with an endoscopic video system clearly exposed the detailed structures in the parapharyngeal space. The stylopharyngeus, styloglossus muscles, and styloid process were critical landmarks in this approach. During the thirty cases of clinical surgeries, internal carotid arteries and cranial nerves could be effectively exposed and protected with the endoscopic video system. Accurate hemostasis could be achieved under endoscopic transcervical approach with a mean amount between 30 to 100 ml of hemorrhaging. There was no postoperative hemorrhages and emergency tracheotomies. The follow up led to promising results.Conclusions and significance: The transcervical endoscopic approach provides a wide corridor for surgery in the parapharyngeal space. With accurate hemostasis, this approach can be applied as the first-line strategy for parapharyngeal surgeries in selected patients.

To investigate the validity of Chinese law enforcement from the public's perspective, this research applies the theory of planned behavior, and introduces law as a moderator variable to explore the determinants of public's environmental behaviors. Results from an empirical study of China indicate that perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, inward attitude, and outward attitude all have positive impacts on environmental intentions and indirectly affect the citizens' environmental behavior and activists' environmental behavior. Meanwhile, legal cognition positively moderates the relationship between environmental intentions and behaviors. As the level of the public's legal awareness increases, the direct effect of these two types of environmental intentions on environmental behaviors respectively continues to increase. Based on the findings, some constructive implications are provided to the governments and legislators to strengthen public participation in environmental protection.

Environmental management systems may play an important role in environmental pollution control. Given China's rapid economic development and increases in environmental pollution, this study attempts to study how environmental decentralization and local government competition affect China's regional green development. To show the green development degree of different provinces in China, the super-efficiency SBM-undesirable model is used to calculate the green total factor productivity of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2016. The panel vector autoregressive model (PVAR) is employed to empirically test the impact of environmental decentralization on regional green development. The dynamic threshold panel model is also used to analyze the possible nonlinear relationship between environmental decentralization and regional green development under different levels of local government competition. The results indicate that environmental decentralization and environmental administrative decentralization play significant roles in promoting regional green development, but environmental supervision decentralization and environmental monitoring decentralization have negative impacts on regional green development. The joint effect of local government competition and environmental decentralization produces the "race to bottom" effect, which reduces the efficiency level of regional green development. With the continuous strengthening of local government competition, the role of environmental decentralization in promoting regional green development efficiency decreases gradually. In addition, the relationship among environmental decentralization, local government competition, and regional green development differs across Chinese different regions.

BACKGROUND: The main issue of this study is to demonstrate whether M-phase phosphoprotein 8 (MPP8) affect gastric tumor growth and metastasis. METHODS: Retrospective study was proceeded in 280 patients' surgical specimens with different disease stages. Loss-of-function assays, including 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide, flow cytometry, and transwell assays were performed to evaluate the biological function of MPP8 in gastric cancer cells. Apoptosis and metastasis relative biomarkers were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Compared with normal adjacent tissues, obviously elevated MPP8 expression was found in gastric cancer tissues. Elevated MPP8 expression was associated with male sex (vs female sex), intermediate differentiation (vs poorly differentiated cancer), and later stage (vs earlier stage). Furthermore, MPP8 overexpression in tumor tissues was marginally associated with a poor prognosis, with a significant relationship between MPP8 overexpression and prognosis among patients with poorly differentiated gastric cancer. Inhibition of MPP8 in these cells significantly suppressed proliferation and colony formation, promoted apoptosis, and repressed invasion. Furthermore, silencing of MPP8 remarkably increased apoptosis-related proteins (p53, Bax, and PARP) expression, but downregulated Bcl-2 expression. Silencing of MPP8 also decreased the expression of metastasis pathway-related proteins (N-cadherin and vimentin), and as well as the levels of anti-oncogene ZEB1, MET, and KRAS mRNA. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated that MPP8 might be an oncogene by positively regulating gastric cancer cell function through the p53/Bcl-2 and epithelial to mesenchymal transition-related signaling pathways.

The terrestrial arthropod fauna of wetlands has been largely ignored by scientists compared to other ecological elements, yet these organisms are among the most important influences on the ecology of these systems, with the vast majority of the biodiversity in wetlands found among the terrestrial arthropods. Wetlands present a range of habitat for terrestrial arthropods, with unique faunas being associated with soils and ground litter, living-plant substrates, and peatlands. Myriapoda, Araneae, Collembola, Carabidae, Formicidae, and assorted herbivorous Coleoptera and Lepidoptera are the terrestrial arthropod groups that most influence the ecology of wetlands. Despite their success, most terrestrial arthropods possess fairly rudimentary adaptations for life in wetlands, with most simply moving to higher ground or up vegetation during floods, although some species can tolerate immersion. Many terrestrial arthropods are environmentally sensitive and show considerable promise as bioindicators of wetland ecological conditions.

The objective of this study was to simultaneously obtain protein isolates and lipids from the dried powder of large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea) roes (pcRs) to achieve high-value utilization. Protein isolates and lipids were extracted simultaneously from pcRs by saline and acidic solutions. The purity of the protein isolates from the pcRs (pcRPIs) was greater than 70%, with vitellogenin, vitellogenin B and vitellogenin C as the main proteins. The lipids from pcRs (pcRLs) were mainly composed of triglycerides with high levels of EPA and DHA. The pcRPIs exhibited a higher surface hydrophobicity, water/oil holding capacity and emulsifying ability than those of the pcRs. Moreover, pcRPIs had a better oil holding capacity and emulsifying ability than soy protein isolate. These results suggest that protein isolates and lipids can be simultaneously extracted by saline and acidic solutions, and pcRPIs and pcRLs can be used as functional materials in the food industry.

Background: Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disease (PGT-M) has become an effective method for providing couples with the opportunity of a pregnancy with a baby free of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Multiple displacement amplification (MDA) overcomes the innate dilemma of very limited genetic material available for PGT-M. Objective: To evaluate the use of MDA, combined with haplotype analysis and mutation amplification, in PGT-M for families with SMA. Methods: MDA was used to amplify the whole genome from single blastomeres or trophectoderm (TE) cells. Exon 7 of the survival motor neuron gene 1 (SMN1) and eleven STRs markers flanking the SMN1 gene were incorporated into singleplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays on MDA products. Results: Sixteen cycles (19 ovum pick-up cycles) of PGT-M were initiated in 12 couples. A total of 141 embryos were tested: 90 embryos were biopsied at the cleavage stage and 51 embryos were biopsied at the blastocyst stage. MDA was successful on 94.44% (85/90) of the single blastomeres and on 92.16% (47/51) of the TE cells. And the PCR efficiency were 98.4% (561/570) and 100% (182/182), respectively. In addition, the average allele drop-out (ADO) rates were 13.3% (60/392) and 9.8% (11/112), respectively. The results for SMN1 exon 7 were all matched with haplotype analysis, which allowed an accurate diagnosis of 93.62% (132/141) embryos. Twelve families had unaffected embryos available for transfer and a total of 38 embryos were transferred in 20 embryo transfer cycles. Eight transfers were successful, resulting in a clinical pregnancy rate of 40% (8/20) and an implantation rate of 28.95% (11/38). Finally, 11 healthy babies were born. Among them, 5 SMA carriers were singleton live births and 3 SMA carriers had twin births. Conclusion: Careful handling during the MDA procedure can improve subsequent PCR efficiency and reduce the ADO rate. We suggest that this protocol is reliable for increasing the accuracy of the PGT-M for SMA.

The oxidation of unsaturated fats generally occurs at the oil-water interface of emulsions, so surface-active antioxidants are needed for inhibiting lipid oxidation. In this study, a scallop gonad protein isolate (SGPI)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) conjugate was fabricated and characterized as an amphiphilic surface-active antioxidant in improving the physicochemical and oxidative stability of tuna oil-loaded emulsions via a free-radical grafting method. The covalent binding of EGCG to SGPIs was verified by using electrophoresis and gel permeation chromatography. Meanwhile, the structural, physical, thermal, as well as the in vitro antioxidant properties of the SGPI-EGCG conjugate were further characterized. The results indicated that the SGPI-EGCG conjugate contained more ß-sheet but less α-helix than SGPIs, leading to the changes of the secondary and tertiary conformation stability after conjugation. The radical scavenging and oxygen radical absorbance capacity of SGPIs were significantly increased by 4.9 times and 7.4 times, respectively, after the EGCG-grafting reaction. Compared with that stabilized by SGPIs, tuna oil emulsions emulsified by the SGPI-EGCG conjugate exhibited a smaller particle size and better storage stability. Furthermore, the SGPI-EGCG conjugate inhibited lipid and fatty acid oxidation during storage more significantly in tuna oil emulsions than SGPIs due to its higher interfacial accumulation and antioxidant activities. These results suggested that the SGPI-EGCG conjugate could be utilized as an efficient surface-active antioxidant and emulsifier for the encapsulation and protection of unsaturated lipids.

Abstract Introduction: There is still no general method for discriminating between benign and malignant leukoplakia and identifying vocal fold leukoplakia. Objective: To evaluate the reliability of a morphological classification and the correlation between morphological types and pathological grades of vocal fold leukoplakia. Methods: A total of 375 patients with vocal fold leukoplakia between 2009 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Two observers divided the vocal fold leukoplakia into flat and smooth, elevated and smooth, and rough type on the basis of morphological appearance. The inter-observer reliability was evaluated and the results of classification from both observers were compared with final pathological grades. Clinical characteristics between low risk and high risk group were also analyzed. Results: The percentage inter-observer agreement of the morphological classification was 78.7% (κ = 0.615, p < 0.001). In the results from both observers, the morphological types were significantly correlated with the pathological grades (p1 < 0.001, p2 < 0.001, Kruskal-Wallis test; r1 = 0.646, p1 < 0.001, r2 = 0.539, p2 < 0.001, Spearman Correlation Analysis). Multivariate analysis showed patient's age (p = 0.018), the size of lesion (p < 0.001), and morphological type (p < 0.001) were significantly different between low risk group and high risk group. Combined receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of significant parameters revealed an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.863 (95% CI 0.823-0.903, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The proposed morphological classification of vocal fold leukoplakia was consistent between observers and morphological types correlated with pathological grades. Patient's age, the size of lesion, and morphological type might enable risk stratification and provide treatment guidelines for vocal fold leukoplakia.


Resumo Introdução: Ainda não há um método universal estabelecido para diferenciar entre a leucoplasia benigna e maligna ou identificar as leucoplasias das pregas vocais. Objetivo: Avaliar a confiabilidade de uma classificação morfológica e a correlação entre os tipos morfológicos e os graus histopatológicos das leucoplasias de pregas vocais. Método: Os registros de 375 pacientes com leucoplasia da prega vocal assistidos entre 2009 e 2015 foram revisados retrospectivamente. Dois observadores dividiram a leucoplasia da prega vocal entre tipo plano e liso, elevado e liso, e rugoso, com base na aparência morfológica. A confiabilidade interobservador foi avaliada e os resultados de classificação de ambos os observadores foram comparados com os graus histopatológicos finais. As características clínicas entre os grupos de baixo risco e alto risco também foram analisadas. Resultados: A porcentagem da concordância interobservador da classificação morfológica foi de 78,7% (κ = 0,615, p < 0,001). Nos resultados de ambos os observadores, os tipos morfológicos correlacionaram-se significativamente com os graus histopatológicos (p1 < 0,001, p2 < 0,001, teste de Kruskal-Wallis; r1 = 0,646, p1 < 0,001, r2 = 0,539, p2 < 0,001, análise de correlação de Spearman). A análise multivariada mostrou que a idade do paciente (p = 0,018), o tamanho da lesão (p < 0,001) e o tipo morfológico (p < 0,001) foram significativamente diferentes entre o grupo de baixo risco e o de alto risco. A análise da curva ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) combinada de parâmetros significativos revelou uma área sob a curva de 0,863 (IC 95%: 0,823 ± 0,903, p < 0,001). Conclusões: A classificação morfológica proposta para leucoplasia de prega vocal foi consistente entre observadores e os tipos morfológicos correlacionaram-se com os graus histopatológicos. A idade do paciente, o tamanho da lesão e o tipo morfológico podem permitir a estratificação de risco e fornecem diretrizes de tratamento para a leucoplasia da prega vocal.

Intermittent hypoxia (IH) has preventive and therapeutic effects on hypertension, myocardial infarction, cerebral ischemia and depression, but its effect on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has not been known. In this study, we used inescapable electric foot shock combined with context recapture to build PTSD mouse model. The levels of fear and anxiety were valued by the open field, the elevated plus maze (EPM) and the fear conditioning tests; the level of spatial memory was valued by Y maze test; the number of Fos positive neurons in hippocampus, amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex was valued by immunohistochemical staining; and the protein expressions of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in these brain area were valued by Western blot. The results showed that IH and model (foot shock) had an interaction on percentage of entering open arms (OE%) in EPM and freezing time and the number of fecal pellets in fear conditioning test. IH increased OE% in EPM and reduced the freezing time and the number of fecal pellets in fear conditioning test in PTSD model mice. At the same time, IH reduced the number of Fos positive neurons in the hippocampus, amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex of PTSD model mice, and increased the protein expression levels of HIF-1α, VEGF and BDNF in these brain tissues. In conclusion, IH pretreatment can relieve fear and anxiety behavior in post-traumatic stress model mice, suggesting that IH may be an effective means of preventing PTSD.

Freshwater releases to wetlands degraded by excessive soil salinity in estuarine areas have been widely used to restore vegetation and maintain biodiversity of the wetland ecosystems. However, freshwater release also alters the physical and chemical properties of the water body, having a profound impact on the ecology of restored wetland ecosystems. In this study, physical and chemical parameters of water quality were compared between restored and non-restored tidal wetlands after 10 years of freshwater release in the Yellow River estuary. In addition, benthic invertebrates were used as bioindicators to reveal the effects of freshwater release on estuarine wetland ecology. The results showed that there was a significant difference in salinity between restored and non-restored wetlands (P < 0.05), which led to differences in the composition of benthic invertebrate communities (ANOSIM P < 0.001). The primary components of benthic invertebrate community were insects in restored wetlands, and in non-restored tidal wetlands the primary components were annelids, crustaceans, and gastropods. More long-term monitoring research of the impacts of freshwater introduction on degraded estuarine wetland ecosystems is needed to fully assess consequences.

OBJECTIVES: Previous evidence suggested Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) promoted tumorigenesis by inducing inflammation in gastric premalignant disease. Whether this organism affected the development of head and neck precancerous lesion remains unknown. We performed this study to assess the prognostic impact of H. pylori infection on patients with laryngeal precancerous lesion. METHODS: In this prospective study, 41 enrolled patients with laryngeal precancerous lesion were arranged into H. pylori-positive group (n=16) and H. pylori-negative group (n=25). Two poor outcomes were recurrence and malignant transformation. Prognostic impact of H. pylori infection was analyzed using the Univariate Cox proportional hazard model and Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test. We also analyzed the prognostic value of systemic inflammation-based markers. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 32.9 months, recurrence developed in 8 patients in the H. pylori positive group and 5 patients in the H. pylori negative group (50.0% vs. 20.0%, P=0.026, Log-rank test). Malignant transformation developed in 4 patients in the H. pylori positive group and no patients in the H. pylori negative group (25.0% vs. 0.0%, P=0.005, Log-rank test). H. pylori positive group had a significant higher malignant transformation rate after stratifying on the observed covariates. There was no significant difference of recurrence rate in two groups stratified with laryngopharyngeal reflux, size of lesion, and pathological type (Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test). The basal levels of lymphocyte counts and neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio were significantly different in patients with H. pylori infection. Moreover, the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed a predictive value of lymphocyte counts and neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio for poor outcomes (areas under the curve, 0.658 and 0.651, respectively). CONCLUSION: The data demonstrate a malignant transformation-relevant role of H. pylori in laryngeal precancerous lesion. H. pylori infection combined with laryngopharyngeal reflux, size of lesion, and pathological type might relate to recurrence of laryngeal precancerous lesion. And changes of lymphocyte counts and neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio associated with H. pylori infection might deserve as predictive indicators for poor prognosis of laryngeal precancerous lesion.

Microorganisms in tidal freshwater wetlands affect biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, but the structures and functions of the wetland communities change due to natural and anthropogenic stresses. Soil samples were collected along a 350-m sampling belt in typical tidal freshwater wetlands of Yellow River Delta to investigate nutrient distributions, bacterial community structures and potential metabolic functions under tide and runoff stress by high-throughput sequencing and PICRUSt analysis. The total nitrogen (TN) contents varied greatly while total phosphorous (TP) contents were relatively stable. The bacterial community structures and predicted functions varied along a 350-m sampling belt. Some sulfate-reducing bacteria, nitrifying bacteria, Marmoricola, unclassified_f_Salinisphaeraceae and Oceanococcus exhibited a decreased trend with increasing distances far away from the river bank (B-0m). However, Salinisphaera was more dominant far away from the river bank (B-350m), indicating the stronger tolerance degree under salt stress. Marinobacterium and Marinobacter could be widely detected from B-0m to B-350m, demonstrating that those bacteria could tolerate a broad range of salinity and have its exceptional adaptation capacities. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that nutrient and salinity played an important role in shaping bacterial community composition. NH4+-N and AP were the key factors in explaining the variance of the genus level. Predicted by PICRUSt analysis, nitrogen fixation (NF), nitrogen mineralization (NM), denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) might be the dominant processes of nitrogen metabolism and related genes abundance were abundant in tidal freshwater wetland soils. These findings could provide new insights into the prevention and control of potential nutrient pollution in tidal freshwater wetlands under the dual stress of tide and runoff.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive value of preoperative peripheral inflammatory markers in patients with vocal fold leukoplakia. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of the patients diagnosed with vocal fold leukoplakia and who accepted carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resection in our center in the last 10 years. We calculated the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) after collecting and analyzing the clinical, histopathological and laboratory data. The potential relation between blood indexes and clinical events as recurrence or canceration was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 589 patients were involved, including 300 cases without recurrence (group A), 198 with recurrence but not canceration (group B) and 91 transformed into squamous cancer (group C). Baseline analysis of NLR, PLR, and MLR showed no difference among the three groups before the first surgery. But all the indexes significantly elevated in groups B (P < 0.001, < 0.001, 0.023, respectively) and C (P = 0.009, 0.004, 0.007, respectively) in the last operation. The receiver-operating curve (ROC) analysis showed NLR as a potential marker of canceration of leukoplakia (AUC = 0.837) and the cutoff value was 2.505. When regrouping with pathological outcomes, severe dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) groups both revealed a higher level of NLR, PLR, and MLR comparing to the no dysplasia, mild dysplasia, and moderate dysplasia groups. NLR, PLR, and MLR in high-risk group (moderate, severe dysplasia and carcinoma) also elevated comparing to low-risk group (no dysplasia, mild dysplasia) (P = 0.039, 0.011, 0.007, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The peripheral inflammatory markers NLR, PLR, and MLR are closely connected with the development of vocal fold leukoplakia. NLR may be a potential marker to predict the poor outcomes (recurrence or canceration) of patients in first surgery.

To investigate the variation in the condition factor of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus nudus (S. nudus), gonads were collected in May (MAY), June (JUN), and July (JUL), at the beginning (AUG-b) and end of August (AUG-e). Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) detection of the gonads revealed an obvious enhancement of the band at about 37 kDa from July, which was identified as transforming growth factor-beta-induced protein ig-h3 (TGFBI) by nanoLC-ESI-MS/MS. Gonadal proteins were identified by isobaric tagging for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ), and regulation of the identified proteins in pairs of the collected groups was observed. A total of 174 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified. Seven of the DEPs showed significant correlations with both the gonad index (GI) and protein content. These correlations included 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, decarboxylating isoform X2 (6PGD), CAD protein, myoferlin isoform X8, ribosomal protein L36 (RL36), isocitrate dehydrogenase [NADP], mitochondrial isoform X2 (IDH), multifunctional protein ADE2 isoform X3, sperm-activating peptides (SAPs) and aldehyde dehydrogenase, and mitochondrial (ALDH). However, TGFBI had no correlation with gonad index (GI) or protein content. 6PGD, IDH, multifunctional protein ADE2 isoform X3, and ALDH were shown to interact with each other and might play key roles in changing the condition factor of S. nudus gonads.

Involvement of DNA in gelation and microstructural properties of scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) male gonad hydrolysates (SMGHs) and corresponding hybrid gel with κ-carrageenan (SMGHs/κ-C) was studied using DNase pretreatment. Although DNase pretreatment significantly transformed SMGHs from weak gels to liquid, it made SMGHs have a superior synergistic effect on gel formation with κ-C by evidence of 2.7-fold G' and 1.1-fold melting temperature. However, the relaxation time (T21 and T23), functional groups, and flocculation behavior were comparable between SMGHs/κ-C and SMGHs/DNase/κ-C. Moreover, SMGHs/DNase/κ-C exhibited a denser network with more numerous patches and larger void spaces. These results suggest that DNA contributes to the gel formation of SMGHs whereas restricts more cationic peptides in SMGHs to bind sulfate groups in κ-C during gel formation.

Background: Laryngeal carcinoma should be treated with the intent of organ-sparing, and supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (CHEP) might be an important option. Aims/objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of glottic carcinoma patients treated with CHEP. Materials and methods: A series of 164 cases with glottic carcinoma undergoing CHEP from 2006 to 2010 was retrospectively analyzed. Results: The 10-year overall survival (OS) rate, disease-specific survival (DSS) rate, and disease-free survival (DFS) rate were 77.6%, 78.8%, 74.1%, respectively. The OS, DSS, and DFS of patients with stage T1 were higher than patients with stages T2 and T3. Patients with locoregional recurrence and distant metastases had lower OS and DFS than patients with neither recurrence nor metastasis. The DFS of patients with advanced laryngeal carcinoma was worse than that of patients with early-stage carcinoma. T2 and T3 stages, locoregional recurrence, and distant metastases had predictive value regarding patient survival. Additionally, the decannulation rate of postoperative patients was 95.1%, and the nasogastric feeding tube removal rate was 100%. Conclusions and Significance: CHEP provided reliable oncologic and functional outcomes, and it should be considered as a standard function-sparing option for glottic T1b, T2, and selected T3 carcinoma patients.
