RESUMO

Accurately understanding the features and connotations of complex engineering problems is an important prerequisite for setting graduation requirements, constructing curriculum and designing teaching contents. By discussing the characteristics of complex engineering problems in the biological industry, this paper explored the demands for undergraduates in Yangtze river delta region, summarized the typical jobs and their requirements, and expounded the connotation of complex engineering problems contained in various typical tasks. On this basis, a gradual curriculum system was constructed, which included multiple stages of conceiving, formation and application, to cultivate the ability to solve complex engineering problems in the major of bioengineering. The curriculum coordinated the implementation of deep integration of industry and education, research feed back course construction, course team and advanced courses building up, professional associations covered all crews and students, supporting the ability training of solving complex engineering problems.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has seriously affected people's mental health and changed their behaviors. Previous studies for mental state and behavior promotion only targeted limited people or were not suitable for daily activity restrictions. Therefore, we decided to explore the effect of health education videos on people's mental state and health-related behaviors. METHODS: Based on WeChat, QQ, and other social media, we conducted an online survey by snowball sampling. Spearman's non-parametric method was used to analyze the correlation related to mental health problems and health-related behaviors. Besides, we used binary logistic regression analyses to examine mental health problems and health-related behaviors' predictors. We performed SPSS macro PROCESS (model 4 and model 6) to analyze mediation relationships between exposure to health education videos and depression/anxiety/health-related behaviors. These models were regarded as exploratory. RESULTS: Binary logistic regression analyses indicated that people who watched the health education videos were more likely to wear masks (OR 1.15, p < 0.001), disinfect (OR 1.26, p < 0.001), and take temperature (OR 1.37, p < 0.001). With higher level of posttraumatic growth (PTG) or perceived social support (PSS), people had lower percentage of depression (For PSS, OR 0.98, p < 0.001; For PTG, OR 0.98, p < 0.01) and anxiety (For PSS, OR 0.98, p < 0.001; For PTG, OR 0.98, p = 0.01) and better health behaviors. The serial multiple-mediation model supported the positive indirect effects of exposure to health education videos on the depression and three health-related behaviors through PSS and PTG (Depression: B[SE] = - 0.0046 [0.0021], 95% CI - 0.0098, - 0.0012; Mask-wearing: B[SE] = 0.0051 [0.0023], 95% CI 0.0015, 0.0010; Disinfection: B[SE] = 0.0059 [0.0024], 95% CI 0.0024, 0.0012; Temperature-taking: B[SE] = 0.0067 [0.0026], 95% CI 0.0023, 0.0013). CONCLUSION: Exposure to health education videos can improve people's self-perceived social support and inner growth and help them cope with the adverse impact of public health emergencies with better mental health and health-related behaviors.

Despite the documented individual, job, and organizational antecedents of cyberloafing at the workplace, few studies have addressed whether, how and when group factors affect employees' cyberloafing behaviors. Drawing on social learning theory and general deterrence theory, the purpose of this study is to test if observability of coworkers' cyberloafing behavior affects employees' perceptions of norms related to cyberloafing and subsequent cyberloafing behaviors and to test if sanctions can play a role in buffering these effects. An investigation of 335 employees working at Chinese enterprises establishes that observing others engaging in cyberloafing influences the employees' perceived norms and cyberloafing behaviors and that employees' perceived norms related to cyberloafing play a partial mediating role in the relationship between observability and employees' cyberloafing. As predicted, we also found that perceived certainty and severity of potential sanctions for cyberloafing moderate the effect of observability on employees' cyberloafing as well as the indirect effect of observability on employees' cyberloafing via perceived norms related to cyberloafing. This study enriched the cyberloafing literature by revealing how observability of cyberloafing influences employees' cyberloafing and by unveiling two boundary conditions under which the cyberloafing learning effect can be buffered.

OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to observe and evaluate the clinical value of interleukin (IL)-11 in the serum and exhaled breath condensate of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: A total of 91 patients with NSCLC and 72 healthy volunteers were included in this study. IL-11 concentration was determined by ELISA, and the relationship between IL-11 expression in serum and exhaled breath condensate specimens, and the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with NSCLC were analyzed. The relationship between serum IL-11 expression and traditional tumor markers and inflammation indicators of NSCLC was also analyzed. The correlation between serum IL-11 and exhaled breath condensate IL-11 level was determined. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic value of IL-11 and carcinoembryonic antigen single and combined detection for NSCLC. The published data from online databases were used to analyze the relationship between the expression of IL-11 and the prognosis of NSCLC. RESULTS: IL-11 concentration in serum and exhaled breath condensate specimens of patients with NSCLC were significantly increased. IL-11 expression was positively correlated with lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, tumor node metastasis stage, and tumor differentiation degree of NSCLC. The expression of IL-11 in serum was positively correlated with that in exhaled breath condensate specimens. IL-11 expression was closely related to that of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and carcinoembryonic antigen. The combination of serum IL-11 with exhaled breath condensate IL-11 and carcinoembryonic antigen showed significantly higher diagnostic value than any one marker alone. Besides, the high IL-11 expression was closely related to the poor prognosis of NSCLC. CONCLUSION: IL-11 can be used as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for NSCLC.

Customer citizenship behavior in the online shopping environment is vital to the success of e-retailers. However, it is unclear whether and how service recovery expectation and recovery justice predict customer citizenship behavior in e-retailing settings. Grounded on the expectation confirmation theory and social exchange theory, this study examined the influence of service recovery expectation and recovery justice on customer citizenship behavior with a serial mediation of recovery expectation confirmation and post-recovery satisfaction. A total of 774 samples from e-shoppers with most impressive (N = 401) and most recent (N = 373) service recovery experience were collected to test the hypotheses using structural equation modeling and bootstrapping procedures. This study reveals that service recovery expectation has a negative impact on recovery expectation confirmation, while recovery justice positively affects recovery expectation confirmation, which is further positively correlated with post-recovery satisfaction and customer citizenship behavior. Moreover, recovery expectation confirmation and post-recovery satisfaction play a serial mediation in the relationship between service recovery expectation and recovery justice, and customer citizenship behavior. Our study contributes to the growing body of customer citizenship behavior literature by offering an alternative perspective (i.e., service recovery) to understand what encourage or impede customer citizenship behavior, and expands service recovery literature by combining service recovery expectation and recovery justice into a framework and revealing the expectation-confirmation mechanism through which they influence post-recovery satisfaction in online shopping setting.

Despite the documented relationship between active-approaching leadership behaviors and workplace safety, few studies have addressed whether and when passive-avoidant leadership affects safety behavior. This study examined the relationship between two types of safety-specific passive-avoidant leadership, i.e., safety-specific leader reward omission (SLRO) and safety-specific leader punishment omission (SLPO), and safety compliance, as well as the moderating effects of an individual difference (safety moral belief) and an organizational difference (organizational size) in these relationships. These predictions were tested on a sample of 704 steel workers in China. The results showed that, although both SLRO and SLPO are negatively related to safety compliance, SLPO demonstrated a greater effect than SLRO. Moreover, we found that steel workers with high levels of safety moral belief were more resistant to the negative effects of SLRO and SLPO on safety compliance. Although steel workers in large enterprises were more resistant to the negative effects of SLPO than those in small enterprises, the SLRO-compliance relationship is not contingent upon organizational size. The current study enriched the safety leadership literature by demonstrating the detrimental and relative effects of two types of safety-specific passive-avoidant leadership on safety compliance and by identifying two boundary conditions that can buffer these relationships among steel workers.

This study focused on the non-grain biorefining of Jerusalem artichoke (JA) for exopolysaccharide (EPS) efficient production by using Bacillus velezensis LT-2. Results showed that LT-2 could directly utilize JA tuber power (JATP) for EPS production, and its EPS yield reached 11.47 ± 0.33 g/L in the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) mode. Furthermore, the SSF mode shortened the fermentation period by 26.67% and reduced the fermentation cost by 79.41% due to the improved substrate utilization and the avoidance of inhibition effects of a high fructose concentration. Transcriptome sequencing results showed that inulin could accelerate nucleotide-sugars biosynthesis, induce EPS synthetic gene cluster transcription, and strengthen the electron transport respiratory chain and the transporter systems, thereby ensuring EPS efficient synthesis. This work exhibited a productive non-grain and environmentally friendly fermentation strategy for EPS biosynthesis, which promoted the JA industry development and created new prospects for high-value industrial products biosynthesis by using JATP.

RESUMO

According to the teaching philosophy of the outcome-based education, this study elaborates the development of a practical innovation course for biological engineering major after five runs of teaching practice and continuous improvement. It mainly includes the methods for selection of teaching subjects, implementation of teaching process, process assessment, evaluation and improvement. Based on the performance and achievements of three grades of students majored in bioengineering, we found that the logic and methods of the practical innovation course could greatly stimulate the motivation of students for learning, as well as their scores. Therefore, the logic and methods described in this study may serve as a reference for the reforms of practical training courses of engineering major under the background of Engineering Education Certification.

RESUMO

Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) is a bile acid receptor encoded by the Nr1h4 gene. FXR plays an important role in maintaining the stability of the internal environment and the integrity of many organs, including the liver and intestines. The expression of FXR in nondigestible tissues other than in the liver and small intestine is known as the expression of "nonclassical" bile acid target organs, such as blood vessels and lungs. In recent years, several studies have shown that FXR is widely involved in the pathogenesis of various respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Moreover, a number of works have confirmed that FXR can regulate the bile acid metabolism in the body and exert its anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects in the airways and lungs. In addition, FXR may be used as a potential therapeutic target for some respiratory diseases. For example, FXR can regulate the tumor microenvironment by regulating the balance of inflammatory and immune responses in the body to promote the occurrence and development of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), thereby being considered a potential target for immunotherapy of NSCLC. In this article, we provide an overview of the internal relationship between FXR and respiratory diseases to track the progress that has been achieved thus far in this direction and suggest potential therapeutic prospects of FXR in respiratory diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to investigate the expression level and clinical significance of serum and exhaled breath condensate miR-186 and IL-1ß in non-small cell lung cancer patients. METHODS: The serum and exhaled breath condensate specimens of 62 non-small cell lung cancer patients and 60 healthy controls were collected to detect miR-186 expression levels by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was applied to examine IL-1ß concentration. Statistical analyses were used to evaluate the correlation between miR-186 and IL-1ß in serum and clinicopathological features, traditional serum tumor markers, and inflammatory markers. The diagnostic efficacy of miR-186 and IL-1ß for non-small cell lung cancer was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The correlation between miR-186 and IL-1ß was determined. RESULTS: ① The relative expression level of miR-186 was greatly reduced in the serum and EBC of patients with non-small cell lung cancer, and the miR-186 expression level was reduced in different TNM stages of non-small cell lung cancer, from the early to later stages. ② The IL-1ß concentration in serum and exhaled breath condensate of patients with non-small cell lung cancer was increased. ③ Serum miR-186 and IL-1ß levels were closely related to lymph node metastasis, and the low expression of serum miR-186 and the high concentration of IL-1ß were associated with higher serum carcinoembryonic antigen, C-reactive protein, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate levels. ④ ROC curve analysis showed that exhaled breath condensate miR-186 had higher area under the curve than serum miR-186, and the combined detection showed higher diagnostic efficacy than the separate detection. In addition, the combined detection of IL-1ß and miR-186 has a larger AUC than the separate detection of both. ⑤ The correlation between serum miR-186 and IL-1ß was negative. CONCLUSION: miR-186 and IL-1ß are expected to be potential diagnostic biomarkers for non-small cell lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounting for 85% of all lung cancer cases. Inflammation has been proven to be one of the characteristics of malignant tumors. Chronic inflammatory response mediated by cytokines in the tumor microenvironment is an important factor in tumorigenesis. The purpose of this study was to observe and evaluate the value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and hemoglobin-to-red blood cell distribution width ratio (HRR) in the progression of NSCLC. METHODS: A total of 245 patients with NSCLC, 97 patients with benign pulmonary nodules, and 94 healthy volunteers were included in this study. Factors, such as age, gender, smoking history, histological type, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stage, and differentiation degree were statistically analyzed. The correlation of RDW, NLR, and HRR of patients with NSCLC with other clinical experimental parameters were also analyzed. Then, the diagnostic value of RDW, NLR, and HRR in the progression of NSCLC was evaluated. RESULTS: RDW, NLR, and HRR could be used to distinguish patients with NSCLC from healthy controls (p < 0.05). In addition, only the RDW in the NSCLC group with III-IV stage was significantly different from that in the benign pulmonary nodules group (p = 0.033), while NLR and HRR could significantly distinguish patients with NSCLC and benign pulmonary nodules (p < 0.001). RDW and NLR were positively correlated with NSCLC stage, whereas HRR was negatively correlated with NSCLC stage. RDW, NLR, and HRR were also significantly associated with the differentiation degree of NSCLC (p < 0.05). The ROC curve analysis showed that the combination of RDW with NLR, HRR, and CEA could show significantly higher diagnostic value than any one marker alone (AUC = 0.925, 95% CI: 0.897-0.954, and sensitivity and specificity of 79.60% and 93.60%, respectively). CONCLUSION: RDW, NLR, and HRR can be utilized as simple and effective biomarkers for the diagnosis and evaluation of NSCLC progression.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of the most common causes of tumor-associated mortality worldwide. Early diagnosis is the key focus for improving prognosis. In the present study, the association between exhaled breath condensate (EBC) let-7 and NSCLC diagnosis and clinicopathologic characteristics was investigated in order to explore non-invasive simple technological therapeutic methods. The expression levels of let-7 from 180 samples were analyzed using the reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), consisting of 30 patients with NSCLC (lung cancer and para-carcinoma tissues, serum and EBC) and 30 healthy volunteers (serum and EBC). The results revealed that the let-7 levels in tumor tissues, serum, and EBC in NSCLC were significantly decreased compared with the control group (all, P<0.001). The let-7 expression in lung cancer tissue, serum, and EBC in NSCLC decreased alongside the progression of disease (tumor-node-metastasis stage and lymph node metastasis; all P<0.05). No significant association between let-7 expression and other clinicopathologic characteristics (age, sex, smoking status and histopathologic classification) was identified. A receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to present data and the area under the curve (AUC) of lung cancer tissue let-7 was 0.894, and the specificity and sensitivity were 90% and 93.3%, respectively. The AUC of serum let-7 in NSCLC diagnosis was 0.771, and the specificity and sensitivity were 86.7% and 60%, respectively. The AUC of let-7 in EBC was 0.750, and the specificity and sensitivity were 76.7% and 66.7%, respectively. In addition, the let-7 expression in EBC was positively correlated with that in lung cancer tissue (r=0.6048, P<0.001) and positively correlated with that in serum (r=0.6454, P<0.001). Taken together, the results of the present study indicated that detection of let-7 was feasible in EBC and with the advantages associated with EBC, and let-7 in EBC may be a promising biomarker for the diagnosis and evaluation of NSCLC.

The main objective of this study was to investigate how and when online product presentation influences individual purchase intention of wearable devices in China. This study hypothesized that online product presentation would influence individual mental imagery, which, in turn, would impact purchase intention through perceived social risk and positive emotion, but this effect would be moderated by individualism-collectivism value at the individual level. We performed a laboratory experiment (2 × 2) to collect the data (N = 254). The experimental results indicated that there was a significant interaction effect between the product feature presentation video and usage scenario presentation picture on mental imagery. In addition to a direct effect, mental imagery had an indirect effect on purchase intention through perceived social risk and positive emotion. Additionally, the behavioral effect of perceived social risk was moderated by individualism-collectivism. Specifically, compared with individualists, perceived social risk had a stronger impact on collectivists' purchase intention. This study contributes to a greater understanding of the mechanism through which online product presentation drives purchase intention, with a particular emphasis on how individualism-collectivism value at the individual level moderates consumers' intention to purchase wearable devices.

A novel p-type semiconductor-based cathodic "signal-on" photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was proposed for highly sensitive and selective detection of chloramphenicol (CAP). The photocathode was fabricated with hierarchical porous flower-like Bi-BiOI@C composite synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method using glucose as both green reductant and carbon precursor. Due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi and high-conductivity of carbon, the composite exhibited an enhanced cathodic photocurrent as compared with pure BiOI or Bi-BiOI. When CAP-binding aptamer was immobilized as recognition element on Bi-BiOI@C modified electrode, a cathodic PEC aptasensor showing specific "signal-on" response to CAP was constructed. Some influencing factors such as coating amount of Bi-BiOI@C suspension, applied bias potential, and aptamer concentration were studied. Under the optimum conditions, the cathodic photocurrent of the constructed PEC aptasensor increased linearly with CAP concentration from 2 to 250 nM, with a detection limit (3S/N) of 0.79 nΜ. The proposed sensor was successfully applied to the determination of CAP in pharmaceutical tablet, eye drop and lake water samples.

This work focuses on the development of non-food fermentation for the cost-effective biosynthesis of exopolysaccharide (EPS) by using a new strain of Kosakonia cowanii LT-1. This novel strain more efficiently utilizes sucrose for EPS production than other glycosyl donors. Comparative transcriptomic analysis is used to understand EPS synthesis promotion and the effects of sucrose on EPS biosynthesis. We speculate that ATP-binding cassette transporter, phosphotransferase, and two-component systems may be the most essential factors for EPS biosynthesis. The enhanced oxidative phosphorylation increases the synthesis rate of ATP to satisfy the energy demands for EPS production with sucrose as the substrate. Sugarcane juice, a cheap raw material, could improve the EPS yield in batch fermentation and achieve approximately 29.66% cost savings for substrate. Our work presents a promising non-food fermentation approach for the synthesis of high-value industrial products.

Mining and smelting activities are the primary sources of toxic metal pollution in China. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pollution risk and identify sources of metals in the arable soil of a Zn/Pb mining and smelting district located in Huize, in Southwest China. Topsoil (346) and profile (three) samples were collected and analyzed to determine the total concentrations of eight toxic elements (Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn and Ni). The results showed that the mean Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn and Ni concentrations were 9.07, 0.37, 25.0, 512, 88.7, 239, 1761 and 90.3 mg/kg, respectively, all of which exceeded both the Huize and Yunnan soil background levels. Overall the topsoil was quite acidic, with a mean pH of 5.51. The mean geoaccumulation index (Igeo) revealed that the pollution level was in the order of Pb > Zn > Cd > Hg > As > Ni > Cu > Cr. The ecological risk index (Ei) indicated that there were serious contamination risks for Cd and Hg, high risk for Pb, moderate risk for As, and Cd and Hg were the dominant contributors to the high combined ecological risk index (Er) with a mean parameter of 699 meaning a serious ecological risk. The Nemerow pollution index (Pn) showed that 99.1% of soil samples were highly polluted or worse. Horizontally, high concentrations of Cd, Hg, As, Pb and Zn appeared in the north and middle of the study area, while Cr, Cu and Ni showed an opposite trend. Vertically, as the depth increased, Cd, Hg, As, Pb and Zn contents declined, but Cr, Cu and Ni exhibited an increasing trend. The mobilities of the metals were in the order of Zn > Cd > Hg > As > Pb. Horizontal and vertical distribution, coupled with correlation analysis, PCA and CA suggested that Cd, Hg, As, Pb and Zn mainly came from the anthropogenic sources, whereas Cr and Ni had a lithogenic origin. The source of Cu was a combination of the presence of parent materials as well as human activities. This study provides a base for the local government to control the toxic metal pollution and restore the soil environment system and an effective method to identify the sources of the studied pollutants.

RESUMO

This study investigates the in-class and out-of-class cyberloafing activities of students in China, and tests the relationship between those activities and academic performance. A sample of 1,050 undergraduate students at a large University in China reported their in-class (N = 548) and out-of-class (N = 502) cyberloafing activities, which were tested against the students' academic performance. The test results show a negative relationship between in-class cyberloafing and academic performance, but an inverted U-shaped relationship between out-of-class cyberloafing and academic performance. The results support our propositions that cyberloafing is a harmful distraction in the classroom, but can have positive effects when performed in moderation outside the classroom as a means of effort recovery.

RESUMO

This paper investigates the permutation flowshop scheduling problem (PFSP) with the objectives of minimizing the makespan and the total flowtime and proposes a hybrid metaheuristic based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO). To enhance the exploration ability of the hybrid metaheuristic, a simulated annealing hybrid with a stochastic variable neighborhood search is incorporated. To improve the search diversification of the hybrid metaheuristic, a solution replacement strategy based on the pathrelinking is presented to replace the particles that have been trapped in local optimum. Computational results on benchmark instances show that the proposed PSO-based hybrid metaheuristic is competitive with other powerful metaheuristics in the literature.

Oridonin, a diterpenoid isolated from Rabdosia rubescences, has been reported to have antitumor effects. In this study, the growth-inhibitory activity of oridonin for L929 cells was exerted in a time-and dose-dependent manner. After treatment with oridonin for 24 h, L929 cells underwent both apoptosis and necrosis as measured by an lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity-based assay. A rapid generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was triggered by oridonin, and subsequently up-regulation of phospho-p53 (ser 15) expression and an increased expression ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 was observed. Furthermore, there was a significant fall in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and increase in caspase-3 activity after exposure to oridonin for 24 h. Surprisingly, the pan-caspase inhibitor z-VAD-fmk and caspase3 inhibitor z-DEVD-fmk rendered L929 cells more sensitive to oridonin, rather than preventing oridonin-induced cell death. Oridonin and z-VAD-fmk co-treatment not only resulted in an even higher ROS production, but also made a more significant reduction in the MMP. Pretreatment of ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC) led to a complete inhibition of oridonin-induced cell death, intracellular ROS generation, and MMP collapse. NAC treatment also reversed the potentiation of cell death by the pan-caspase inhibitor z-VAD-fmk. Taken together, these observations showed that oridonin-induced cell death in L929 cells involved intracellular ROS generation, activation of phospho-p53 (ser 15), and up-regulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio; and the augmented cell death by z-VAD-fmk was dependent on an increased ROS production.

AIM: To study the caspase-3-independent mechanisms in oridonin-induced MCF-7 human breast cancer cell apoptosis in vitro. METHODS: The viability of oridonin-treated MCF-7 cells was measured by MTT (thiazole blue) assay. Apoptotic cells with condensed nuclei were visualized by phase contrast microscopy. Nucleosomal DNA fragmentation was assayed by agarose gel electrophoresis. The apoptotic ratio was determined by lactate dehydrogenase assay. Cell cycle alternation and mitochondrial membrane potential were measured by flow cytometric analysis. Bax, Bcl-2, caspase-3, caspase-9, heat shock protein (Hsp)90, p53, p-p53, p21, Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), and the inhibitor of caspase-activated DNase (ICAD) protein expressions were detected by Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Oridonin inhibited cell growth in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Cell cycle was altered through the upregulation of p53 and p21 protein expressions. Pancaspase inhibitor Z-VAD-fmk and calpain inhibitor II both decreased cell death ratio. Nucleosomal DNA fragmentation and the downregulation of DeltaPhimit were detected in oridonin-induced MCF-7 cell apoptosis, which was involved in a postmitochondrial caspase-9-dependent pathway. Decreased Bcl-2 and Hsp90 expression levels and increased Bax and p21 expression levels were positively correlated with elevated levels of phosphorylated p53 phosphorylation. Moreover, PARP was partially cleaved by calpain rather than by caspase-3. CONCLUSION: DNA damage provoked alternations in the mitochondrial and caspase-9 pathways as well as p53-mediated cell cycle arrest, but was not related to caspase-3 activity in oridonin-induced MCF-7 cells.
