RESUMO

Agricultural products are a primary pathway for humans to accumulate heavy metals (HMs) via the soil-crop system and should therefore should be included as a crucial part of the food security in our country. Given that previous studies on protection zoning for preventing farmland HM pollution rarely considered agricultural products as a basic element, this study attempted to establish a zoning system for farmland HM prevention, which was based on the perspective of agricultural product pollution. We subsequently took a representative peri-urban area in the black soil region, which was provided with a higher risk of being polluted, as an empirical case. The results indicated that:① the comprehensive quality index of agricultural products (IICQAP) was 1.09, illustrating only a mild HM pollution, with Pb and Ni having the highest accumulation levels; ② the human health risk index (QHI) was 0.61, showing no risk for human health; and ③ the designed zoning method revealed 89.45% of the farmlands to be risk-free at the moment and 10.55% of the farmlands to be under low risk of HM pollution in agricultural products. According to the zoning results, we suggested prioritized protection and an early-warning strategy, respectively, and further recommended prevention methods such as accumulation intervention, crop restructuring, and in-situ passivation. The results served to enrich the theoretical basis for preventing farmland HM pollution, to reinforce the management standards for agricultural products in the black soil region, and also to build a differentiated urban-rural farmland protection system.

The study objective was to compare the effectiveness of microwave ablation (MWA) and laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) on solitary 3-5cm HCC over time. From 2008 to 2019, 1,289 patients from 12 hospitals were enrolled in this retrospective study. Diagnosis of all lesions were based on histopathology. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance all baseline variables between the two groups in 2008-2019 (n =335 in each group) and 2014-2019 (n =257 in each group) cohorts, respectively. For cohort 2008-2019, during a median follow-up of 35.8 months, there were no differences in overall survival (OS) between MWA and LLR (Hazard ratio (HR): 0.88, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.65-1.19, P =0.420), and MWA was inferior to LLR regarding disease-free survival (DFS) (HR 1.36, 95%CI (1.05-1.75), P =0.017). For cohort 2014-2019, there was comparable OS (HR 0.85, 95%CI (0.56-1.30), P =0.460) and approached statistical significance for DFS (HR 1.33, 95%CI (0.98-1.82), P =0.071) between MWA and LLR. Subgroup analyses showed comparable OS in 3.1-4.0cm HCCs (HR 0.88, 95%CI (0.53-1.47), P =0.630) and 4.1-5.0cm HCCs (HR 0.77, 95%CI (0.37-1.60), P =0.483) between two modalities. For both cohorts, MWA shared comparable major complications (both P >0.05), shorter hospitalization and lower cost to LLR (all P <0.001). Conclusion: MWA might be a first-line alternative to LLR for solitary 3-5cm HCC in selected patients with technical advances, especially for patients unsuitable for LLR.

Seventeen C20-O-alkyl/benzyl oxime derivatives were synthesized by a concise and effective method. Most of these derivatives showed tens to several hundred nanomolar IC50 values against HT-29 colorectal, HGC-27 gastric and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, whose antiproliferative activity is 15-240 fold better than that of salinomycin. The C20-oxime etherified derivatives can coordinate potassium ions, and further adjust the cytosolic Ca2+ concentrations in HT-29 cells. The significant improvement of the potency should be attributed to the better ion binding and transport ability of the modified derivatives. In addition, the C20-O-alkyl/benzyl oxime derivatives showed much better selectivity indexes (SI) than salinomycin, indicating that they present lower neurotoxic risk.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the correlation of platelet parameters and C-reactive protein (CRP) with depression. Methods: The clinical data of 61 patients with depression and 30 healthy control subjects were collected to compare the platelet parameters, CRP levels, and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores of the two groups for correlation analysis. Results: The results revealed that the body mass index (BMI) of patients with depression was lower (P < 0.05) than that of the healthy control subjects, and that this difference was more significant in women than in men. Patients with severe depression showed an increased mean platelet volume (MPV) (P < 0.05). In the patients with depression, MPV was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for work and interest, gastrointestinal symptoms, hopelessness, the anxiety/somatization factor, and the hopelessness factor. Platelet count (PLT) was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for hypochondriasis, and plateletcrit (PCT) was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for middle insomnia and hypochondriasis. Platelet distribution width (PDW) was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for gastrointestinal and systemic symptoms as well as hopelessness. Higher CRP levels (P < 0.05) were found in the patients with depression than in the healthy control subjects. Furthermore, in the patients with depression, CRP levels were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for guilt and the cognitive impairment factor. Conclusion: Classical platelet parameters (PLT, MPV, PCT, PDW) and CRP were shown to be associated with specific depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment factors, including sleep, gastrointestinal symptoms, hypochondriasis, losing interest in work, and despair. These results suggest that both platelet parameters and CRP could be suitable biomarkers for predicting the occurrence and prognosis of depression, thus providing a new target for its treatment.

A green method for the synthesis of in-situ Cu paste is developed. Cu particles are prepared through chemical reduction by selecting a special copper source, reducing agent, and solvent. Then the reaction solution is directly concentrated to obtain an in-situ Cu paste. The synthesis of Cu particles and the preparation of Cu paste are conducted simultaneously, and the process of separation, purification, drying, storage, and re-dispersion of powder are reduced. Particles are not directly exposed to air, thus the oxidation of micro/nano-Cu is effectively prevented, and the agglomeration of particles caused by drying and dispersion operations is simultaneously reduced. Furthermore, the proposed method has a certain universality, and different types of Cu sources can be used to prepare in-situ paste with different sizes and morphologies. The entire preparation process is simple, efficient, green, and the yield can reach 99.99%, which breaks through the bottleneck of the application of traditional micro/nano-Cu materials. Copper acetate based in-situ paste is sintered for 30 min at 260 °C and 2 MPa in a reducing atmosphere. The shear strength, resistivity, and thermal conductivity reach 55.26 MPa, 4.01 × 10-8 Ω·m, and 92.75 W/(m·K), respectively, which could meet the interconnection application of power semiconductor devices.

The effects of acetylation, hydroxypropylation, cellulase hydrolysis and crosslinking on adsorption capacities and in vitro hypoglycemic activities of millet bran dietary fibre (MBDF) were studied. The results demonstrated that both acetylation and hydroxypropylation improved water swelling ability of MBDF, and adsorption capacities of cholesterol, cholate and copper ion on MBDF. Acetylation and hydroxypropylation also enhanced α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition activities, glucose-binding ability and glucose diffusion retardation index (GDRI) of MBDF. Acetylated MBDF showed the highest cholate (77.31 mg/g) and cholesterol (13.97 mg/g) adsorption capacities. The crosslinking improved adsorption of cholate, cholesterol, copper ion (25.64 mg/g) and nitrite ion (181.59 µg/g) on MBDF; but reduced α-amylase inhibition activity (p < 0.05). Moreover, cellulase hydrolyzed MBDF exhibited the highest GDRI (39.60%) and α-amylase inhibition activity (34.53%), but the lowest oil and cholate adsorption capacities. The results suggest that the modified MBDFs can be used as an ingredient of hypoglycemic foods.

PURPOSE: To perceive the dental undergraduate's policy of coping with online learning and their decision-making laws during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: For dental undergraduate students from the 2016 grade to 2018 grade of Lishui University, two prospective questionnaire surveys were conducted before the online course starting and four weeks later. SPSS Modeler18.0 software was used to screen, review, and analyze the data. TAN (tree augmented naive) Bayesian network models were utilized to analyze and predict variables. Indicators like the overall prediction accuracy, receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve), and area under the ROC curve(AUC value) were applied to evaluate the model's predicting performances. RESULTS: The case score of each survey was 422 and 382, and the Cronbach's α coefficients of internal consistency were 0.91 and 0.82. Among the decision-making variables in the aspect of "whether to preview online learning materials", the top-two variables were "looking forward to the semester beginning" and "the validity of the network materials". In speaking of "whether the online courses meet the offline course standards", the top-three variables were "the rhythm of lecturing on live or in recorded videos", "how many online tasks', and" the data frame and organization". The overall prediction accuracy of each constructed TAN Bayesian network model was 89.42% and 87.82%, and their AUC values were 0.75 and 0.93, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: To truly make online courses comparable to the off-line curriculum, teachers should fully understand how the students cope with their online learning at first. Then, only by perceiving and recognizing the students' expectations for education, by efficiently preparing and organizing online materials with all-round, clearly-structured, vivid, comprehensible contents and moderate difficult tasks, by well interacting with students through different websites and social media, can we truly achieve " ongoing learning with suspended class".

Utilizing spermatozoa as the engine unit of robotic systems at a microscale has brought revolutionized inspirations and strategies to the biomedical community. However, the motility of sperms is impaired by the surrounding threats. For example, the antisperm antibody (AsA) can specifically bind with surface antigens on the sperm membrane and adversely affect their propulsion, hindering the operation of sperm-based microrobots in practical environments. In the present work, we report a biohybrid sperm microrobot by encapsulating sperm cells within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles (NPs) (ZIFSpermbot), capable of active drug delivery and cytoprotection from the biological threats of AsA. ZIF-8 NPs can be facilely coated on the sperm membrane through complexation with tannic acid. Such cell surface engineering has a negligible impact on sperm motility under optimized conditions. The selective permeability of the resulting porous ZIF-8 wrappings protects ZIFSpermbots from the specific binding of AsA, enabling the preservation of intrinsic propulsion of the sperm engine. Besides, ZIF-8 wrappings sustainably release zinc ions and attenuate the oxidative damage generated in sperm cells, allowing the maintenance of sperm movement. Combining the effective protection of sperm propulsion with the drug-loading capacity of ZIF-8 NPs provides new applicability to ZIFSpermbots in risky surroundings with AsA, exhibiting rapid migration in a microfluidic device for active drug delivery with enhanced therapeutic efficacy due to their retained effective propulsion. Imparting bioengine-based microrobots with multifunctional wrappings holds great promise for designing adaptive cell robots that endure harsh environments toward locally extended and diverse operations, facilitating their use in practical and clinical applications.

Increasing evidence shows that the pathogenesis of Kawasaki disease (KD) is caused by abnormal and unbalanced innate and adaptive immune responses. However, the changes in and functions of adaptive immune cells in the peripheral blood of subjects with KD remain controversial. In this study, three different methods, CIBERSORT, Immune Cell Abundance Identifier (ImmuCellAI), and immune cell markers, were used to evaluate the proportions and abundances of immune cells in eight KD datasets (GSE9863, GSE9864, GSE18606, GSE63881, GSE68004, GSE73461, GSE73463, and GSE64486; a total of 1,251 samples). Compared with those in normal controls and convalescent KD samples, the proportions and abundances of innate immune cells such as neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages in acute KD peripheral blood samples were significantly increased, while those of adaptive immune cells such as B and T cells were significantly decreased. The change tendencies of these immune cells were similar to those observed in other febrile illnesses but were more significant. However, in the coronary artery tissues of patients with convalescent KD, adaptive immune cells, especially B cells and CD8+ T cell subsets, were significantly increased. This result suggests that adaptive immune cells can be selectively recruited from peripheral blood into the coronary arteries. In addition, we found that elevated neutrophils in peripheral blood could be used as a biomarker to assist in the differential diagnosis of KD, but we did not find immune cells that could accurately predict intravenousimmunoglobulin (IVIG) responses in multiple datasets.

Objective: To explore the best ablative margin (AM) for single hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with image-guided percutaneous thermal ablation (IPTA) based on MRI-MRI fusion imaging, and to develop and validate a local tumor progression (LTP) predictive model based on the recommended AM. Methods: Between March 2014 and August 2019, 444 treatment-naïve patients with single HCC (diameter ≤3 cm) who underwent IPTA as first-line treatment from three hospitals were included, which were randomly divided into training (n= 296) and validation (n = 148) cohorts. We measured the ablative margin (AM) by MRI-MRI fusion imaging based on pre-ablation and post-ablation images. Then, we followed up their LPT and verified the optimal AM. Risk factors related to LTP were explored through Cox regression models, the nomogram was developed to predict the LTP risk base on the risk factors, and subsequently validated. The predictive performance and discrimination were assessed and compared with conventional indices. Results: The median follow-up was 19.9 months (95% CI 18.0-21.8) for the entire cohort. The results revealed that the tumor size (HR: 2.16; 95% CI 1.25-3.72; P = 0.003) and AM (HR: 0.72; 95% CI, 0.61-0.85; P < 0.001) were independent prognostic factors for LTP. The AM had a pronounced nonlinear impact on LTP, and a cut-off value of 5-mm was optimal. We developed and validated an LTP predictive model based on the linear tumor size and nonlinear AM. The model showed good predictive accuracy and discrimination (training set, concordance index [C-index] of 0.751; validation set, C-index of 0.756) and outperformed other conventional indices. Conclusion: The 5-mm AM is recommended for the best IPTA candidates with single HCC (diameter ≤3 cm). We provided an LTP predictive model that exhibited adequate performance for individualized prediction and risk stratification.

OBJECTIVES: We tried to realize accurate pathological classification, assessment of prognosis, and genomic molecular typing of renal cell carcinoma by CT texture feature analysis. To determine whether CT texture features can perform accurate pathological classification and evaluation of prognosis and genomic characteristics in renal cell carcinoma. METHODS: Patients with renal cell carcinoma from five open-source cohorts were analyzed retrospectively in this study. These data were randomly split to train and test machine learning algorithms to segment the lesion, predict the histological subtype, tumor stage, and pathological grade. Dice coefficient and performance metrics such as accuracy and AUC were calculated to evaluate the segmentation and classification model. Quantitative decomposition of the predictive model was conducted to explore the contribution of each feature. Besides, survival analysis and the statistical correlation between CT texture features, pathological, and genomic signatures were investigated. RESULTS: A total of 569 enhanced CT images of 443 patients (mean age 59.4, 278 males) were included in the analysis. In the segmentation task, the mean dice coefficient was 0.96 for the kidney and 0.88 for the cancer region. For classification of histologic subtype, tumor stage, and pathological grade, the model was on a par with radiologists and the AUC was 0.83 [Formula: see text] 0.1, 0.80 [Formula: see text] 0.1, and 0.77 [Formula: see text] 0.1 at 95% confidence intervals, respectively. Moreover, specific quantitative CT features related to clinical prognosis were identified. A strong statistical correlation (R2 = 0.83) between the feature crosses and genomic characteristics was shown. The structural equation modeling confirmed significant associations between CT features, pathological (ß = - 0.75), and molecular subtype (ß = - 0.30). CONCLUSIONS: The framework illustrates high performance in the pathological classification of renal cell carcinoma. Prognosis and genomic characteristics can be inferred by quantitative image analysis. KEY POINTS: • The analytical framework exhibits high-performance pathological classification of renal cell carcinoma and is on a par with human radiologists. • Quantitative decomposition of the predictive model shows that specific texture features contribute to histologic subtype and tumor stage classification. • Structural equation modeling shows the associations of genomic characteristics to CT texture features. Overall survival and molecular characteristics can be inferred by quantitative CT texture analysis in renal cell carcinoma.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive and highly lethal disease. The lack of targeted therapies and poor patient outcome have fostered efforts to discover new molecular targets to treat patients with TNBC. Here, we showed that baculoviral IAP repeat containing 6 (BIRC6) is overexpressed and positively correlated with epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) in TNBC cells and tissues and that BIRC6 overexpression is associated with poor patient survival. Mechanistic studies revealed that BIRC6 stability is increased by EGF-JNK signaling, which prevents ubiquitination and degradation of BIRC6 mediated by the E3 ubiquitin ligase HECTD1. BIRC6 in turn decreases SMAC expression by inducing the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, thereby antagonizing apoptosis and promoting the proliferation, colony formation, tumorsphere formation, and tumor growth capacity of TNBC cells. Therapeutically, the PEGylated cationic lipid nanoparticle (pCLN)-assisted delivery of BIRC6 small interfering RNA (siRNA) efficiently silences BIRC6 expression in TNBC cells, thus suppressing TNBC cell growth in vitro and in vivo, and its antitumor activity is significantly superior to that of the EGFR inhibitor gefitinib. Our findings identify an important regulatory mechanism of BIRC6 overexpression and provide a potential therapeutic option for treating TNBC.

INTRODUCTION: Many patients with ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG) progress to generalized disease within the first 2 years of the onset of ocular symptoms. Several retrospective studies have identified risk factors associated with generalization, however these studies included patients on immunosuppression therapy or those undergoing thymectomy, which may reduce the generalization risk. In this study we explored the risk factors for generalization in non-immunosuppressed and non-thymectomized patients with OMG. METHODS: Data from patients with OMG treated at seven tertiary hospitals in China were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical characteristics, including sex, age at onset, symptoms at onset, comorbid autoimmune diseases, neostigmine test response, repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) findings, presence of serum anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody (AChR-Ab), and thymic status based on radiological and pathological studies, were collected. The main outcome measure was disease generalization. The follow-up period was defined as the date of ocular symptom onset to the date of confirmation of generalization or immunotherapy initiation, or last follow-up (defined as 60 months). The Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the risk factors for generalization. RESULTS: Overall, 572 patients (269 women) were eligible for inclusion in the analysis, of whom 144 developed generalization. The mean (standard deviation) onset age was 45.5 (19.8) years, and the median (interquartile range) follow-up period was 14.5 (7.0-47.3) months. Multivariable Cox regression analysis demonstrated that both early-onset (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 5.34; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.64-17.36; p = 0.005) and late-onset (aHR 7.18; 95% CI 2.22-23.27; p = 0.001) in adulthood, abnormal RNS findings (aHR 3.01; 95% CI 1.97-4.61; p < 0.001), seropositivity for AChR-Ab (aHR 2.58; 95% CI 1.26-5.26; p = 0.01), and thymoma (aHR 1.62; 95% CI 1.05-2.49; p = 0.03) were independently associated with increased risk of generalization. CONCLUSION: The risk of generalization increased significantly in patients with adult-onset OMG, abnormal RNS findings, seropositivity for AChR-Ab, and thymoma, suggesting that these risk factors may predict OMG generalization.

BACKGROUND: m6A methylation-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a significant role in the progression of various tumors and can be used as prognostic markers. However, whether m6A-related lncRNAs also play the same function as prognostic markers in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains unclear. METHODS: Consensus cluster analysis was performed to divide PTC samples obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas database into two clusters according to the expression of m6A-related lncRNAs. Then, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis was performed to create and verify a prognostic model. Furthermore, the relationship among risk scores, clusters, programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), tumor microenvironment (TME), clinicopathological characteristics, immune infiltration, immune checkpoint, and tumor mutation burden (TMB) was analyzed. In addition, a nomogram was created, and subsequently, the drug sensitivity of lncRNAs in the prognostic model was analyzed. Finally, the relationship between these lncRNAs and prognosis in pan-cancer was investigated. RESULTS: The prognosis, RAS, BRAF, M, and TME were found to be different in two clusters. The prognostic model included three lncRNAs: PSMG3-AS1, BHLHE40-AS1, and AC016747.3. The risk score was associated with clusters, PD-L1, tumor microenvironment, clinicopathological characteristics, immune cell infiltration, immune checkpoint, and TMB, and thus, risk score was confirmed as useful prognostic indicator. Differentially expressed lncRNAs are involved in many malignancies and can be identified as cancer prognostic makers. CONCLUSION: According to our research, we can regard m6A-related lncRNAs involved in the procession of PTC as a biomarker of progression-free survival for PTC patients, and pan-cancer.

BACKGROUND Effective identification of patients with suspected COVID-19 is vital for the management. This study aimed to establish a simple clinical prediction model for COVID-19 in primary care. MATERIAL AND METHODS We consecutively enrolled 60 confirmed cases and 152 suspected cases with COVID-19 into the study. The training cohort consisted of 30 confirmed and 78 suspected cases, whereas the validation cohort consisted of 30 confirmed and 74 suspected cases. Four clinical variables - epidemiological history (E), body temperature (T), leukocytes count (L), and chest computed tomography (C) - were collected to construct a preliminary prediction model (model A). By integerizing coefficients of model A, a clinical prediction model (model B) was constructed. Finally, the scores of each variable in model B were summed up to build the ETLC score. RESULTS The preliminary prediction model A was Logit (YA)=2.657X1+1.153X2+2.125X3+2.828X4-10.771, while the model B was Logit (YB)=2.5X1+1X2+2X3+3X4-10. No significant difference was found between the area under the curve (AUC) of model A (0.920, 95% CI: 0.875-0.953) and model B (0.919, 95% CI: 0.874-0.952) (Z=0.035, P=0.972). When ETLC score was more than or equal to 9.5, the sensitivity and specificity for COVID-19 was 76.7% (46/60) and 90.1% (137/152), respectively, and the positive and negative predictive values were 75.4% (46/61) and 90.7% (137/151), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The ETLC score is helpful for efficiently identifying patients with suspected COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess whether trans-lymphatic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) combined with sentinel lymph node biopsy can be used to assess the status of cervical lymph nodes and skip metastasis in patients with early squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral tongue. METHODS: This study included 21 subjects with early oral tongue SCC who received multiple intramucosal peritumoral injections of Sonazoid. CEUS examinations were performed immediately after Sonazoid injection to identify sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs). The SLNs were excised for histological examination to determine if the lymph nodes has metastases. RESULTS: Thirty-five SLNs were detected by CEUS after Sonazoid injection in the subjects. SLNs were identified in 20 of the total 21 subjects. Four participants had metastasis to lymph nodes, and one had skip metastasis in level Ⅲ. In one subject, SLNs were successfully detected in level Ⅳ without skip metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: Trans-lymphatic CEUS combined with sentinel lymph node biopsy showed high accuracy for evaluating cervical lymph node status. This could be a reliable approach for detecting cervical skip metastases of lymph nodes in early-stage oral cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent and regulated cell death that has been widely reported in a variety of malignancies. The overall survival of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is excellent, but the identification of patients with poor prognosis still faces challenges. Nevertheless, whether ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) can be used to screen high-risk patients is not clear. METHODS: We obtained the clinical data of patients with PTC and FRGs from the UCSC Xena platform and the FerrDb respectively. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of FRGs were obtained from the entire The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Subsequently, the entire TCGA dataset was randomly split into two subsets: training and test datasets. Based on DEGs, we constructed a predictive model which was tested in the test dataset and the entire TCGA dataset to predict progression-free survival (PFS). Patients were categorized into high- or low-risk groups based on their median risk score. We analyzed differences in some aspects, including pathway enrichment analysis, single-sample Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (ssGSEA), tumor microenvironment (TME), human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes, and tumor mutation burden (TMB) analyses, between high-risk and low-risk groups. RESULTS: A predictive model with three FRGs (HSPA5, AURKA, and TSC22D3) was constructed. Patients in the high-risk group had worse PFS compared with patients in the low-risk group. Functional analysis results revealed that ssGSEA, immune cell infiltration, TME, HLA, and TMB were closely associated with ferroptosis. CONCLUSION: The prognostic model constructed in this study can effectively predict PFS for patients with PTC.

BACKGROUND: Recurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after chemoradiotherapy is common, but submucosal recurrence of NPC is rare. The final pathological results determine the optimal therapeutic schedule for treatment of NPC recurrence, but tissue retrieval from submucosal lesions is usually difficult. The present study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of a novel approach of endonasopharyngeal ultrasound-guided transnasopharyngeal needle aspiration (ENUS-TNNA) for submucosal neoplasms in patients with suspected NPC recurrence. METHODS: Between March 2017 and June 2021, 11 post-chemoradiotherapy patients with suspected magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of submucosal recurrence of NPC underwent ENUS-TNNA. The safety and effectiveness of using ENUS-TNNA to sample submucosal neoplasms were evaluated. RESULTS: Needle aspiration biopsies were performed without any incidences in all cases. Out of the 11 patients, nine were diagnosed with submucosal recurrence of NPC via histopathological or cytological evaluations. Of the two puncture-negative cases, one patient had atypical imaging findings and clinical manifestations and was therefore followed-up using MRI. After follow-up for 3 years, this patient was still considered to be cancer-free due to the shrinking diameters of the submucosal lesions. For the other puncture-negative patient, submucosal biopsy samples were obtained using a surgical method. Pathological examination of these biopsies revealed that an angiosarcoma had developed after radiotherapy. There were no severe complications that occurred during the ENUS-TNNA procedure. CONCLUSION: ENUS-TNNA is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive approach to obtain tissue samples from the submucosal region of the nasopharynx for patients with suspected NPC recurrence.
