OBJECTIVES: Environmental, socioeconomic and genetic factors all are associated with respiratory diseases. We aim to investigate the association between the ABO blood groups and the susceptibility to respiratory diseases. METHODS: We constructed a retrospective cohort study of blood donors in Shaanxi, China between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2018, to investigate the impacts of the ABO blood group on the risk of hospitalisation due to respiratory diseases. RESULTS: Of 1,686,263 enrolled participants (680,788 females), 26,597 were admitted to hospital for respiratory diseases. Compared with blood group O, blood groups A, B and AB all demonstrated a higher risk of diseases of the upper respiratory tract (ICD10: J30-J39) (ARR 1.139 95% CI [1.106-1.225]; 1.095 [1.019-1.177]; 1.178 [1.067-1.30], respectively). Conversely, blood group A was found to have a lower risk (0.86 [0.747-0.991]) in influenza (J09-J11) and blood group B was lower for pneumonia (J12-J18) (0.911 [0.851-0.976]) when compared with blood group O. The duration of hospitalisation was significantly different across the blood groups in J09-J11 and J30-J39 (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The blood group appears to be a prognostic factor in differentiating the occurrence of specific respiratory diseases and duration.

Hypertension is both a cause and effect of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and impacts a significant proportion of patients, with a worldwide prevalence of 10-15%. Previous genetic studies involving the Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rat, a model of hypertensive CKD, identified multiple genetic loci linked to kidney injury, including a region on chromosome (Chr) 8. Subsequently, an S.SHR(8) congenic (i.e. transfer of kidney injury resistant SHR genome onto the SS background) demonstrated significantly reduced proteinuria and improved renal function compared to SS control. To identify the gene/s responsible, genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis identified cingulin-like 1 (Cgnl1) as a putative gene linked to kidney injury on Chr. 8. Cgnl1 is known to localize to adherens and tight cell-cell junctions, mediating junction assembly via regulating the activity of the small GTPases such as RhoA and Rac1. A SS-Cgnl1-/- knockout (KO) was developed to test the hypothesis that loss of Cgnl1 will result in a significant attenuation of kidney injury compared to SS (WT). Both on low and high-salt (LS=0.3% or HS=2.0% NaCl), KO animals (n=6) demonstrated reduced proteinuria compared to WT animals (n=6) for the entirety of the experiment (HS; KO= 28.7 ± 2.9 versus WT= 161.4 ± 33.1 mg/24hr at week 15, p<0.0001). To further validate Cgnl1's effect on blood pressure and kidney injury, a temporal analysis (6-12 weeks) using telemetry and additional renal measurements were conducted on WT and KO animals. On HS, KO animals (n=6) demonstrated reduced proteinuria compared to WT (n=6) for the entirety of the experiment (52.1 ± 7.2 versus 395.9 ± 29.8 mg/24hr at week 12, p<0.0001). While HS fed WT animals exhibited a significant increase in BP compared to LS WT (MAP=197.0 ± 5.0 versus 142.8 ± 3.5 mmHg, p<0001), KO remained unchanged (MAP= 127.6 ± 2.7 and 133.9 ± 3.7 mmHg respectively, NS). Kidney pathology measures, including glomerular and tubular injury were all significantly improved (all p<0.05) in KO compared to WT. Nephron number was measured with no significant difference between WT and KO in young animals, but HS fed WT demonstrated a significant loss of nephrons compared to KO. Bulk RNAseq of kidneys from WT and KO identified Cgnl1 as top downregulated gene with altered expression of many known genes linked with Cgnl1 compared to WT, along downregulation of genes associated with renal injury, mainly reflective of physiological differences from week12-15. To better identify genes involved in onset of injury, single nuclei RNAseq was performed at week 4 (before physiological differences) to evaluate impact of Cgnl1 in distinct cell populations initiating injury. Additional work is also currently being done on HEK293- Cgnl1 knockout cell lines for more mechanistic study of Cgnl1 and pathways. In total, the molecular work, along with the physiological characterization of the SS-Cgnl1-/- , is expected to provide insight into the role of Cgnl1 in the onset and progression of hypertensive kidney disease and identify new therapeutic targets.

Edible bird's nest (EBN) is an expensive health food. There are many adulterants in the market. It remains challenging to discriminate EBN from its adulterants due to a lack of high-specificity markers. Besides, the current markers are confined to soluble fraction of EBN. Here, both soluble and insoluble fractions were analyzed by LC-QTOF-MS/MS. A total of 26 high-specificity peptides that were specific to EBN were selected as qualitative authentication markers. Among them, 10 markers can discriminate EBN from common adulterants, 13 markers discriminate white EBN from grass EBN/common adulterants, and 3 markers discriminate grass EBN from white EBN/common adulterants. Three of them, which showed high signal abundance (Peak area ≥ 106) and satisfactory linearity (R2 ≥ 0.995) with EBN references, were selected as the assay marker; and their peptide sequences were confidently identified by searching database/de novo sequencing. Based on these markers, a qualitative and quantitative analytical method was successfully developed and well-validated in terms of linearity, precision, repeatability, and accuracy. The method was subsequently applied to detect EBN products on the market. The results indicated that more than half of EBN products were not consistent with what the merchants claimed.

PURPOSE: To compare binocular anterior segment structures in Chinese patients with dark iris and unilateral Fuchs' uveitis syndrome (FUS). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study including 34 phakic eyes (17 patients) with unilateral FUS. Anterior segment parameters were measured by rotating Scheimpflug imaging camera, noncontact specular microscopy, and anterior segment optical coherence tomography. RESULTS: Corneal volume was higher in FUS eyes compared to unaffected eyes (p < 0.05). The iridocorneal angles were larger in FUS eyes compared to contralateral eyes (p < 0.05). Mean endothelial cell density (ECD) was lower, and the coefficient of variation in endothelial cell size and average cell area of endothelial cells (ACA) were higher, in FUS eyes (p < 0.05). Mean densitometry values of the midstromal cornea (zones with a diameter of 0-2, 2-6, or 10-12 mm), posterior (0-2, 2-6, 10-12, or 0-12 mm), or total thickness (0-2 or 2-6 mm) were higher in FUS eyes compared with unaffected eyes (p < 0.05). ECD, percentage of hexagonal cells, and ACA were strongly related to densitometry values of the midstromal and posterior cornea in the FUS eyes (p < 0.05). Smoothness index of iris was lager in affected eyes (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In Chinese patients with unilateral FUS, loss of endothelial cells, wider iridocorneal angle, thicker cornea, higher corneal densitometry of midstromal and posterior layer, and smoother iris were observed in affected eyes compared to contralateral eyes. These data can help to elucidate anterior segment characteristics of unilateral FUS in this population.

PER1 is a core component of the internal time-keeping system. In the suprachiasmatic nucleus, it serves as the primary circadian pacemaker in mammalian brains. PER1 functions with other clock components to generate a feedback loop involving the transcriptional repression of gene expression to produce a circadian rhythm with an approximately 24-hour cycle. Post-transcriptional modifications (PTMs) are a basic regulatory mechanism that both perpetuate self-sustained oscillations and interpret metabolic input into circadian physiology by affecting factors such as protein stability, interactions, localization, and activity. Here we examined whether the serine/threonine protein kinase WNK3, which is expressed in a circadian rhythm, can interact and colocalize with PER1 in the SCN. In rats, WNK3 knockdown in the SCN is associated with altered sleep patterns. Moreover, WNK3 can phosphorylate PER1 to promote its degradation and is associated with circadian oscillations when PER1 is expressed in vitro.

The template-free unidirectional alignment of lamellar block copolymers (l-BCPs) for sub-10 nm high-resolution patterning and hybrid multicomponent nanostructures is important for technological applications. We demonstrate a modified soft-shear-directed self-assembly (SDSA) approach for aligning pristine l-BCPs and l-BCPs with incorporated polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs), as well as the l-BCP conversion to aligned gold nanowires, and hybrid of metallic gold nanowire and dielectric silica nanoparticle in the form of line-dot nanostructures. The smallest patterns have a half-pitch as small as 9.8 nm. In all cases, soft-shear is achieved using a high-molecular-mass polymer topcoat layer, with support on a neutral bottom layer. We also show that the hybrid line-dot nanostructures have a red-shifted plasmonic response in comparison to neat gold nanowires. These template-free aligned BCPs and nanowires have potential use in nanopatterning applications, and the line-dot nanostructures should be useful in the sensing of biomolecules and other molecular species based on the plasmonic response of the nanowires.

Electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen (O2 ) to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) frequently suffers from the low activity and poor selectivity of catalysts owing to the lack of systematic strategies. The resulting enhancement to enable the further design of a new bimetallic catalyst with the synergistic interplay, as exemplified by Cu-Pb catalyst for two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR), is reported here. Critically, in-depth evidence, including density functional theory (DFT) calculations, electrochemical signals, in-situ Raman, and H2 O2 -proof work, allude to a catalytic favor to the 2e- ORR of Cu-Pb.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), a malignant neoplasm with high incidence, is a severe global public health threat. The current modalities used for treating ESCC include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Although ESCC management and treatment strategies have improved over the last decade, the overall 5-year survival rate remains <20%. Therefore, the identification of novel therapeutic strategies that can increase ESCC patient survival rates is urgently needed. Oxethazaine, an amino-amide anesthetic agent, is mainly prescribed in combination with antacids to relieve esophagitis, dyspepsia, and other gastric disorders. In the present study, we found that oxethazaine inhibited the proliferation and migration of esophageal cancer cells. According to the results of in vitro screening and binding assays, oxethazaine binds directly to AURKA, suppresses AURKA activity, and inhibits the downstream effectors of AURKA. Notably, we found that oxethazaine suppressed tumor growth in three patient-derived esophageal xenograft mouse models and tumor metastasis in vivo. Our findings suggest that oxethazaine can inhibit ESCC proliferation and metastasis in vitro and in vivo by targeting AURKA.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To determine the neck management of tongue cancer, this study attempted to construct an artificial neural network (ANN)-assisted model based on computed tomography (CT) radiomics of primary tumors to predict neck lymph node (LN) status in patients with tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred thirteen patients with tongue SCC were retrospectively included and randomly divided into training (60%), validation (20%) and internally independent test (20%) sets. In total, 1673 feature values were extracted after the semiautomatic segmentation of primary tumors and set as input layers of a classical 3-layer ANN incorporated with or without clinical LN (cN) status after dimension reduction. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), area under curve (AUC) and Net Reclassification Index (NRI), were used to evaluate and compare the models. RESULTS: Four models with different settings were constructed. The ACC, SEN, SPE and AUC reached 84.1%, 93.1%, 76.5% and 0.943 (95% confidence interval: 0.891-0.996, p<.001), respectively, in the test set. The NRI of models compared with radiologists reached 40% (p<.001). The occult nodal metastasis rate was reduced from 30.9% to a minimum of 12.7% in the T1-2 group. CONCLUSION: ANN-based models that incorporated CT radiomics of primary tumors with traditional LN evaluation were constructed and validated to more precisely predict neck LN metastasis in patients with tongue SCC than with naked eyes, especially in early-stage cancer.

BACKGROUND: Thisstudy aimed to investigate the impact of fish oil-based lipid emulsion (FO) on enterohepatic injuries and intestinal microbiota in piglets of parenteral nutrition (PN). METHODS: Newborn piglets were divided into three groups, including enteral diet (the controls), PN with 100% FO and PN with medium-chain triglyceride/long-chain triglyceride-based lipid emulsion (MCT/LCT) for 14 days. Serum biochemical indicators, hepatic and intestinal histology, and expression of genes associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and lipid metabolism were measured. The bile acid (BA) profiles in serum and the taxonomic composition of the gut microbiome in different intestinal segments were analyzed. RESULTS: Compared with MCT/LCT-piglets, FO reduced inflammation, promoted fatty acid oxidation, and decreased oxidative stress in the liver. In the intestine, FO decreased intestinal inflammation and intestinal permeability, leading to reduced lipopolysaccharide entry into the blood circulation relative to MCT/LCT-piglets. PN groups have dominant contents of Proteobacteria and Bacteroides, whereas the control group have Firmicutes at the phylum level. FO altered the taxonomic compositions of the gut microbiome in different segments, increased the relative abundance of Bacteroidaceae in ileum, and Rikenellaceae and Ruminococcaceae in the colon. FO treatment shifted BA composition ratio in serum and had a lower ratio of secondary BAs to primary BAs. CONCLUSION: FO alleviates PNLAD and intestinal injury by regulating the homeostasis of BAs' enterohepatic circulation and altering microbiota composition in different intestinal segments.

BACKGROUND: Due to the high recurrence and low 5-year survival rates of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) after treatment, the discovery of novel drugs for recurrence chemoprevention is of particular importance. METHODS: We screened the FDA-approved drug library and found that Nuplazid, an atypical antipsychotic that acts as an effective 5-HT 2 A receptor inverse agonist, could potentially exert anticancer effects in vitro and in vivo on ESCC. RESULTS: Pull-down results indicated that Nuplazid binds with p21-activated kinase 4 (PAK4), and a kinase assay showed that Nuplazid strongly suppressed PAK4 kinase activity. Moreover, Nuplazid exhibited inhibitory effects on ESCC in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that Nuplazid can suppress ESCC progression through targeting PAK4.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatosteatosis, defined as excessive intrahepatic lipid accumulation, represents the first step of NAFLD. When combined with additional cellular stress, this benign status progresses to local and systemic pathological conditions such as NASH and insulin resistance. However, the molecular events directly caused by hepatic lipid build-up, in terms of its impact on liver biology and peripheral organs, remain unclear. Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) is the rate limiting enzyme for long chain fatty acid beta-oxidation in the liver. Here we utilise hepatocyte-specific Cpt1a knockout (LKO) mice to investigate the physiological consequences of abolishing hepatic long chain fatty acid metabolism. APPROACH & RESULTS: Compared to the wild-type (WT) littermates, high fat diet (HFD)-fed LKO mice displayed more severe hepatosteatosis but were otherwise protected against diet-induced weight gain, insulin resistance, hepatic ER stress, inflammation and damage. Interestingly, increased energy expenditure was observed in LKO mice, accompanied by enhanced adipose tissue browning. RNAseq analysis revealed that the peroxisome proliferator activator alpha (PPARα)- fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) axis was activated in liver of LKO mice. Importantly, antibody-mediated neutralization of FGF21 abolished the healthier metabolic phenotype and adipose browning in LKO mice, indicating that the elevation of FGF21 contributes to the improved liver pathology and adipose browning in HFD-treated LKO mice. CONCLUSIONS: Liver with deficient CPT1A expression adopts a healthy steatotic status that protects against HFD-evoked liver damage and potentiates adipose browning in an FGF21-dependent manner. Inhibition of hepatic CPT1A may serve as a viable strategy for the treatment of obesity and NAFLD.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays essential roles in various physiological and pathological processes. The electrochemical hydrogen peroxide reduction reaction (HPRR) has been recognized as an efficient approach to H2O2 sensing; however, the HPRR has always suffered from low tolerance against the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), resulting in poor selectivity of the HPRR-based sensing platform. In this study, we find that the electrochemical HPRR occurs preferentially compared to the ORR when isolated Cu atoms anchored on carbon nitride (Cu1/C3N4) are used as a single-atom electrocatalyst, which is theoretically attributed to the lower energy barrier of the HPRR than that of the ORR on a Cu1/C3N4 single-atom catalyst (SAC). With the Cu1/C3N4 SAC as the electrocatalyst, we fabricated microsensors that have a good response to H2O2, but not to O2 or other electroactive neurochemicals. When implanted into a living rat brain, the microsensor shows excellent in vivo sensing performance, enabling its application in real-time quantitative investigation of the dynamics of H2O2 production induced by mercaptosuccinate and glutathione monoethyl ester in a living animal brain.

With the widespread application of next-generation sequencing(NGS), especially 16 S rRNA and shotgun sequencing, researchers are no longer troubled with massive data on the gut microbiota, and the correlation between the gut microbiota and the brain(central nervous system) has been gradually revealed. Research on the microbiota-gut-brain axis(MGBA) based on the gut microbiota have provided insights into the exploration of the pathogenesis and risk factors of ischemic stroke(IS), a cerebrovascular disease with high disability and mortality rates, and also facilitate the selection of therapeutic targets of this class of drugs. This study reviewed the application of NGS in the study of gut microbiota and the research progress of MGBA in recent years and systematically collated the research papers on the correlation between IS and gut microbiota. Furthermore, from the bi-directional regulation of MGBA, this study also discussed the high-risk factors of IS under the dysregulation of gut microbiota and the pathophysiological changes of gut microbiota after the occurrence of IS and summarized the related targets to provide a reliable reference for the therapeutic research of IS from the gut microbiota.

Development of high-performance heterogeneous catalytic materials is important for the rapid upgrade of chemicals, which remains a challenge. Here, the benzene oxidation reaction was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the atomic interface strategy to improve catalytic performance. The developed B,N-cocoordinated Cu single atoms anchored on carbon nanosheets (Cu1/B-N) with the Cu-N2B1 atomic interface was prepared by the pyrolysis of a precoordinated Cu precursor. Benefiting from the unique atomic Cu-N2B1 interfacial structure, the designed Cu1/B-N exhibited considerable activity in the oxidation of benzene, which was much higher than Cu1/N-C, Cu NPs/N-C, and N-C catalysts. A theoretical study showed that the enhanced catalytic performance resulted from the optimized adsorption of intermediates, which originated from the manipulation of the electronic structure of Cu single atoms induced by B atom coordination in the Cu-N2B1 atomic interface. This study provides an innovative approach for the rational design of high-performance heterogeneous catalytic materials at the atomic level.

BACKGROUND: The newly designed cervical disc prosthesis, Pretic-I, had been finished its limited clinical use for over 5 years. At a short-term follow-up of 2 years, we obtained satisfactory clinical results. The long-term clinical efficacy and safety of Pretic-I will now be analyzed. METHODS: Peri-operative parameters included intra-operative blood loss, operation time, off-bed time. Clinical parameters included visual analogue scale (VAS) for arm and neck, neck disability index (NDI), and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score. Radiological parameters included C2-7 Cobb angle, Shell angle, and the range of motion (ROM) of C2-7, functional segment unit (FSU), and adjacent FSU. The CDA-related complications included adjacent segment degeneration (ASDeg), adjacent segment disease (ASDis), heterotopic ossification (HO), prosthesis subsidence, prosthesis displacement, and dysphagia. RESULTS: A total 64 patients from two independent centers received a single-level CDA with Discover (n = 32) and Pretic-I (n = 32), and all of patients finished a 5-year follow-up. There're no significant differences between two groups in peri-operative parameters. The clinical parameters improved greatly in Pretic-I group (p<0.0001), and there's no statistical difference from Discover group. Furthermore, Pretic-I could slightly improve the cervical curvature (15.08 ± 11.75 to 18.00 ± 10.61, p = 0.3079) and perfectly maintain the Shell angle (3.03 ± 3.68 to 2.23 ± 4.10, p = 0.1988), cervical ROM (52.48 ± 14.31 to 53.30 ± 11.71, p = 0.8062) and FSU ROM (12.20 ± 4.52 to 10.73 ± 4.45, p = 0.2002). The incidence of high-grade HO (Grade III-IV) at the final follow-up was significantly lower in Pretic-I group than in Discover group (12.50% vs. 34.38%, p = 0.0389, Statistical Power = 95.36%). The incidences of other CDA-related complications in Pretic-I group were also well-accepted, comparable to the Discover group, without significant differences. CONCLUSION: CDA with Pretic-I demonstrated a well-accepted and sustained clinical outcome, with a significantly lower incidence of high-grade HO. This newly designed prosthesis is expected to become an alternative choice for cervical disc prosthesis in the future.

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) used as runway pavement material may suffer different strain rate loads such as aircraft taxiing, earthquakes, crash impacts, or blasts. In this paper, the dynamic tensile behaviors of the steel grid-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and KEVLAR fiber-reinforced ECC were investigated by dynamic tensile tests at medium strain rates. The mixture was designed with different volume fractions of fibers and layer numbers of steel grids to explore the reinforcement effectiveness on the dynamic performance of the ECC. The volume fractions of these two types of fibers were 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% of the ECC matrix, respectively. The layer numbers of the steel grid were 0, 1, and 2. The dynamic tensile behaviors of the PVA fiber and the KEVLAR fiber-reinforced ECC were also compared. The experimental results indicate that under dynamic tensile loads, the PVA-ECC reveals a ductile and multi-cracking failure behavior, and the KEVLAR-ECC displays a brittle failure behavior. The addition of the PVA fiber and the KEVLAR fiber can improve the tensile peak stress of the ECC matrix. For the specimens A0.5, A1, A1.5, and A2.0, the peak stress increases by 84.3%, 149.4%, 209.6%, and 237.3%, respectively, compared to the matrix specimen. For the specimens K0.5, K1, K1.5, and K2, the peak stress increases by about 72.3%, 147.0%, 195.2%, and 263.9%, respectively, compared to the matrix specimen. The optimum fiber volume content is 1.5% for the PVA-ECC and the KEVLAR-ECC. The KEVLAR-ECC can supply a higher tensile strength than the PVA-ECC, but the PVA-ECC reveals more prominent deformation capacity and energy dissipation performance than the KEVLAR-ECC. Embedding steel grid can improve the tensile peak stress and the energy dissipation of the ECC matrix. For the strain rate of 10-3 s-1, the peak stress of the A0.5S1 and A0.5S2 specimens increases by about 49.1% and 105.7% compared to the A0.5 specimen, and the peak stress of the K0.5S1 and K0.5S2 specimens increases by about 61.5% and 95.8%, respectively, compared to the K0.5 specimen.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatosteatosis, defined as excessive intrahepatic lipid accumulation, represents the first step of NAFLD. When combined with additional cellular stress, this benign status progresses to local and systemic pathological conditions such as NASH and insulin resistance. However, the molecular events directly caused by hepatic lipid build-up, in terms of its impact on liver biology and peripheral organs, remain unclear. Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) is the rate limiting enzyme for long chain fatty acid beta-oxidation in the liver. Here we utilise hepatocyte-specific Cpt1a knockout (LKO) mice to investigate the physiological consequences of abolishing hepatic long chain fatty acid metabolism. APPROACH & RESULTS: Compared to the wild-type (WT) littermates, high fat diet (HFD)-fed LKO mice displayed more severe hepatosteatosis but were otherwise protected against diet-induced weight gain, insulin resistance, hepatic ER stress, inflammation and damage. Interestingly, increased energy expenditure was observed in LKO mice, accompanied by enhanced adipose tissue browning. RNAseq analysis revealed that the peroxisome proliferator activator alpha (PPARα)- fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) axis was activated in liver of LKO mice. Importantly, antibody-mediated neutralization of FGF21 abolished the healthier metabolic phenotype and adipose browning in LKO mice, indicating that the elevation of FGF21 contributes to the improved liver pathology and adipose browning in HFD-treated LKO mice. CONCLUSIONS: Liver with deficient CPT1A expression adopts a healthy steatotic status that protects against HFD-evoked liver damage and potentiates adipose browning in an FGF21-dependent manner. Inhibition of hepatic CPT1A may serve as a viable strategy for the treatment of obesity and NAFLD.

Graphene-based catalysts have been widely applied for catalytic ozonation. However, as it is difficult to obtain graphene with high structural precision, it is currently unfeasible to comprehend the relationships between the intrinsic structure of the layered carbon catalysts with its catalytic activities. Here, an advanced plasma-assisted etch strategy was used to fine tune the ozonation activity of monolayered graphene films by tailoring the defect types. Raman mapping indicated that the defects of the as-prepared monolayered graphene films were predominantly sp3, vacancy, and boundary-type defects, respectively. The roles and contributions of these active defects in manipulating the oxidative potential of monolayered graphene films were revealed by quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance results, and density functional theory calculations. The catalytic results showed that the monolayered graphene films with boundary-like defects exhibited the best catalytic performance toward the degradation of sulfamethoxazole. This work contributes new insights into the design of high-efficiency carbonaceous catalysts by structuring additional defective sites.

PURPOSE: To assess the morphologic and clinical features of posterior capsule-intraocular lens (IOL) interaction following cataract surgery with and without primary posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis (PPCCC) at a three-dimensional (3-D) level using Scheimpflug imaging. METHODS: This prospective intraindividual randomized comparative study comprised 56 patients (112 eyes) with age-related cataract who had bilateral cataract surgery and hydrophobic acrylic IOLs implantation. In randomized order, cataract surgery with PPCCC was performed in 1 eye (PPCCC group), and the posterior capsule was left intact in the fellow eye (NPCCC group). Scheimpflug imaging containing 25 images distributed in 360° was taken 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS: 46 patients completed 3 months follow-up. Posterior capsule-IOL interaction can be morphologically classified into two types including complete adhesion and floppy shape in PPCCC group, and six types including full area wave, full area flat, concentric ring wave, concentric ring flat, sector, and complete adhesion in NPCCC group. The adhesion index (AI), defined as the proportion of complete adhesion of posterior capsule-IOL in 25 cross-section tomograms, was 0.45 ± 0.45, 0.79 ± 0.37, 0.92 ± 0.26 and 1.00 ± 0.00 in PPCCC group, while 0.05 ± 0.18, 0.41 ± 0.47, 0.87 ± 0.34, and 0.96 ± 0.21 in NPCCC group at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months postoperatively, respectively (p = 0.001, 0.001, 0.338 and 0.151). CONCLUSIONS: 3-D Scheimpflug imaging was favorable in observing of posterior capsule-IOL interaction. Faster posterior capsule adhesion to the IOL was found in PPCCC group than in NPCCC group.
