RESUMO

Oxidative stress caused by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is the hallmark of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Among the first line of defense against oxidative stress is the dismutation of superoxide radicals, which in the mitochondria is carried out by manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD2). In this study, wild-type (WT) and SOD2-heterozygous knockout (SOD2+/-) mice were exposed to CIH or normoxic (Nor) conditions. After 4 weeks, pulmonary artery pressure was measured, and the mice were processed to harvest either serum for cytokine assays or lungs for flow cytometry and histopathological studies. Herein, we showed that heterozygous deletion of SOD2 markedly deteriorated pulmonary remodeling and increased the oxidative stress, especially promoted the infiltration of macrophages in the lungs of CIH mouse. Moreover, in the intermittent hypoxia (IH)-treated RAW264.7 cells, SOD2 knockdown increased the nucleotide-binding domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation accompanied with the IL-1ß elevation and caspase-1 activity. Additionally, mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) scavenger mito-TEMPO abolished NLRP3 inflammasome activation in IH-treated RAW264.7 cells. Collectively, our results supported that SOD2 contributed to the pathogenesis of CIH-induced lung remodeling. Meanwhile, SOD2 knockdown exacerbates oxidative damage through assembly and activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in macrophages. SOD2 may be a novel therapeutic target for CIH-induced pulmonary inflammation and arteriole remodeling.

The objective of this study was to describe prehospital delay and health beliefs in Chinese patients with colorectal cancer. A total of 756 adult Chinese patients with a first-time diagnosis of colorectal cancer were recruited during 2016 in Guangzhou, China. All patients completed the Chinese-language version of a questionnaire developed specifically for this study as well as the Chinese-language version of the Champion Health Belief Model Scale. The results of this study showed that the median length of the prehospital delay was 12 weeks and that the average delay was 18.29 (SD = 14.66) weeks. The rate of prehospital delay was 47.35%. The score of health beliefs among these patients was 115.56 (SD = 9.00) and the average score of the entries was 3.21 (SD = 0.25). Health beliefs about colorectal cancer were negatively correlated with prehospital delay. A multiple logistic regression showed that the level of health beliefs, frequency of physical examinations, occupation, and the site of the cancer were the major factors influencing prehospital delay (p < .05). The patients had a low rate of physical examination (41.40%), and colorectal cancer screening was not routine prior to their physical examination. This study showed that the incidence of prehospital delay among Chinese patients with colorectal cancer was 47.35%. Multiple factors influenced prehospital delay among Chinese patients with colorectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between homocysteine (Hcy) and blood pressure variability (BPV) and the relationship between Hcy and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in 102 patients with essential hypertension. METHODS: The 102 patients were divided into the Hcy < 10 µmol/L group (n = 47) and the Hcy ≥ 10 µmol/L group (n = 55) according to Hcy concentration. The differences between Hcy and BPV and Hcy and LVH were compared between the two groups. Finally, the correlations between Hcy and BPV and between Hcy and LVH were analyzed. RESULTS: The results showed that there were significant differences between Hcy and BPV and between Hcy and LVH in the two groups. Hcy correlated positively with the coefficient of variation in nighttime diastolic blood pressure and night systolic blood pressure standard deviation (nDBPSD), with correlation coefficients of 0.331 and 0.303 (P < 0.001). At the same time, Hcy correlated positively with interventricular septal thickness and left ventricular posterior wall thickness, which were indicators of LVH, with correlation coefficients of 0.350 and 0.352 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: There was a correlation between Hcy and BPV and between Hcy and LVH. Attention should also be paid to blood Hcy and BPV for patients with essential hypertension.

Lynch syndrome (LS), an autosomal dominantly inherited disease previously known as hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), leads to a high risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) as well as malignancy at certain sites including endometrium, ovary, stomach, and small bowel (Hampel et al., 2008; Lynch et al., 2009). Clinically, LS is considered the most common hereditary CRC-predisposing syndrome, accounting for about 3% of all CRC cases (Popat et al., 2005). LS is associated with mutations of DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes such as MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS2, and EPCAM (Ligtenberg et al., 2009; Lynch et al., 2009), which can trigger a high frequency of replication errors in both microsatellite regions and repetitive sequences in the coding regions of various cancer-related genes. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) tests followed by genetic analysis of these mutations play a significant role in diagnosis, treatment determination, and therapeutic response prediction of LS (Lynch et al., 2009; Alex et al., 2017; Ryan et al., 2017). Here, we report substitution of one base-pair in exon 1 of MLH3 (c.1397C>A) and a frameshift mutation in exon 19 of MLH1 (c.2250_2251ins AA) in a 43-year-old Chinese male with an LS pedigree.

Four new steroidal saponins, 3-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl(1→4)-ß-D-fucopyranosyl -(25R)-spirost-5-en-3ß,17α-diol (1), 3-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl(1→4)-ß-D- fucopyranosyl-(25S)-spirost-5-en-3ß,17α-diol (2), 3-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl(1→2) -ß-D-glucopyranosyl(1→4)-ß-D-fucopyranosyl-(25R)-spirost-5-en-3ß,17α-diol (3), 3-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl(1→4)-ß-D-fucopyranosyl-(25R/S)-spirost-5-en-3ß,12ß-diol (4), together with five known steroidal saponins were isolated from the ethanolic extract of the rhizome of Polygonatum sibiricum. Chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques. Anti-inflammatory activities of these new compounds were evaluated.

The prevalence of Lynch syndrome (LS) varies significantly in different populations, suggesting that ethnic features might play an important role. We enrolled 3330 consecutive Chinese patients who had surgical resection for newly diagnosed colorectal cancer. Universal screening for LS was implemented, including immunohistochemistry for mismatch repair (MMR) proteins, BRAFV600E mutation test and germline sequencing. Among the 3250 eligible patients, MMR protein deficiency (dMMR) was detected in 330 (10.2%) patients. Ninety-three patients (2.9%) were diagnosed with LS. Nine (9.7%) patients with LS fulfilled Amsterdam criteria II and 76 (81.7%) met the revised Bethesda guidelines. Only 15 (9.7%) patients with absence of MLH1 on IHC had BRAFV600E mutation. One third (33/99) of the MMR gene mutations have not been reported previously. The age of onset indicates risk of LS in patients with dMMR tumors. For patients older than 65 years, only 2 patients (5.7%) fulfilling revised Bethesda guidelines were diagnosed with LS. Selective sequencing of all cases with dMMR diagnosed at or below age 65 years and only of those dMMR cases older than 65 years who fulfill revised Bethesda guidelines results in 8.2% fewer cases requiring germline testing without missing any LS diagnoses. While the prevalence of LS in Chinese patients is similar to that of Western populations, the spectrum of constitutional mutations and frequency of BRAFV600E mutation is different. Patients older than 65 years who do not meet the revised Bethesda guidelines have a low risk of LS, suggesting germline sequencing might not be necessary in this population.

Coronary microembolization (CME) substantially reduces the clinical benefits of myocardial reperfusion therapy. Autophagy and apoptosis participate in the pathophysiological processes of almost all cardiovascular diseases, including CME-induced myocardial injury, but the precise underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, we observed that Egr-1 expression was substantially increased after CME modeling. Inhibition of Egr-1 expression through the targeted delivery of rAAV9-Egr-1-shRNA improved cardiac function and reduced myocardial injury. The microinfarct size was also significantly smaller in the Egr-1 inhibitor group than in the CME group. These benefits were partially reversed by the autophagy inhibitor 3-MA. As shown in our previous study, autophagy in the myocardium was impaired after CME. Inhibition of Egr-1 expression in vivo restored the autophagy flux and reduced myocardial apoptosis, at least partially, by inhibiting the Egr-1/Bim/Beclin-1 pathway, as evidenced by the results of the western blot, RT-qPCR, and TUNEL staining. At the same time, TEM showed a dramatic increase in the number of typical autophagic vacuoles in the Egr-1 inhibitor group compared to the CME group. Based on these findings, the Egr-1/Bim/Beclin-1 pathway may be involved in CME-induced myocardial injury by regulating myocardial autophagy and apoptosis, and this pathway represents a potential therapeutic target in CME.

To explore the role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of hypertension, our study investigated the gender-specific association between four polymorphisms in the Apelin/APJ gene and hypertension risk in southeastern Chinese population. All participants including 645 hypertensive patients and 362 normotensive controls were genotyped for 4 gene polymorphisms associated with hypertension susceptibility including Apelin (rs909656, rs5975126) and APJ (rs10501367, rs11544374). According to genotype analysis, for male subjects, the frequencies of genotypes (P = 0.046 and 0.046, respectively) of rs10501367 and rs11544374 revealed significant differences between the hypertension and control groups. Moreover, for female subjects, there was significant difference on the genotype distribution of rs11544374 between two groups (P = 0.046). The association of rs10501367 with hypertension was significant for males under additive models and recessive models, even after adjusting for age, BMI, fasting glucose and waistline. Besides, significant association was observed for rs11544374 in females under additive models. As for haplotype analysis, haplotype T-A (in order of rs10501367 and rs11544374) in APJ gene was marginally overrepresented in controls (17.9%) compared to patients with hypertension (11.6%) in males (P = 0.003). The mutation of polymorphism rs10501367 in APJ gene decreased risk of hypertension in Chinese males.

PURPOSE: To explore effect of goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) on early cognitive function in elderly patients with spinal stenosis. METHODS: 83 elderly patients with spinal stenosis were randomly classified into two groups: control group (n = 40) and GDFT group (n = 43). The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score, IL-6 and S100ß levels, hemodynamic parameters, cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2), arterial lactic acid values, output of surgery, operation time and cases of hypotension, intraoperative complications within 7 days were recorded for all patients. RESULTS: The incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) was about 21.67% in this study. The MoCA scores, inflammatory mediators, perfusion indexes (rSO2 and lactic acid)and intraoperative hemodynamics(HR, MAP, and CI)were not all the same at different time points (P < 0.05). The levels of inflammatory mediators (IL-6 and S100ß) in GDFT group were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Total intake, amount of lactated Ringer's solution and cases of hypotension in GDFT group were significantly lower than control group (P < 0.05), but amount of voluven was higher than control group(P < 0.05). Compared with control group, the incidence of postoperative delirium, nausea and vomiting, and hypotension in GDFT group was lower (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: GDFT can maintain the stability of perioperative hemodynamics in the prone position of elderly patients with spinal stenosis, improve the balance between perfusion of tissue and organ and supply and demand of oxygen, reduce the inflammatory response, and reduce the incidence of early POCD in this type of surgery.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicated that both red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were useful indices in assessing the disease activity of autoimmune diseases. However, the evidence for the association between RDW, NLR and dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) is limited. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between the disease activity of PM/DM and both RDW and NLR. METHODS: Medical records of 114 PM/DM patients and 114 healthy controls were retrospectively reviewed, and their RDW, NLR and myositis disease activity assessment visual analogue scale (MYOACT) on admission were extracted. The correlations between RDW, NLR and MYOACT were analyzed using the Spearman approach and multivariable model. RESULTS: PM/DM patients had significantly higher RDW and NLR. Increased RDW in PM/DM patients was not completely attributed to decreased hemoglobin or therapeutic agents. Both RDW and NLR are independently and positively correlated MYOACT. CONCLUSION: Both RDW and NLR are useful indices in assessing the disease activity of PM/DM.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Coronary microembolization (CME) can lead to no-reflow or slow reflow, which is one of the important reasons for loss of clinical benefit from myocardial reperfusion therapy. MicroRNAs and autophagy are heavily implicated in the occurrence and development of almost all cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the role of miR-30e-3p and autophagy in CME-induced myocardial injury rat model. METHODS: Sixty rats were randomly divided into six groups: sham, CME 1h,3h,6h,9h, and 12h (n = 10 per group). Our CME rat model was created by injecting polyethylene microspheres (42mm) into the left ventricle of the heart; the sham group was injected with same volume of normal saline. The cardiac function and serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI) level of each group was measured. HE staining and HBFP staining were used to evaluate the myocardial micro-infarction area of myocardium tissue samples. Then RT-qPCR and western blot were used to detect the expression of miR-30e-3p and, autophagy related protein LC3-II and p62, respectively. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used to identify autophagic vacuoles in tissue samples. RESULTS: The cardiac function of the CME 6h,9h, and 12h groups were significantly decreased compared to the sham group (P < 0.05) and the cTnI level in each group were also significantly increased (P < 0.05). The expression of miR-30e-3p in the CME 6h, 9h and 12h group were decreased significantly compared with the sham group (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the expression of autophagy related protein LC3-II decreased significantly and p62 increased significantly in the CME 9h and 12h group (P < 0.05). TEM images showed typical autophagic vacuoles for each of the CME groups. CONCLUSIONS: Myocardial miR-30e-3p is down regulated after CME and is accompanied by inhibited autophagy and decreased cardiac function. Therefore, miR-30e-3p may be involved in CME-induced cardiac dysfunction by regulating myocardial autophagy.

The family of Wnt proteins have been implicated in embryogenesis by regulation of cell fate and pattern formation, and also in human carcinogenesis. Wnt10B was previously shown to be involved in breast cancer development. The present study assessed the association of Wnt10B expression in human gastric cancer tissue specimens with clinicopathological data from these patients. Wnt10B expression in the regulation of gastric cancer cell proliferation and migration capacity in vitro was then investigated. The data revealed that Wnt10B mRNA and protein were upregulated in gastric cancer tissue samples and the upregulated Wnt10B mRNA was associated with gastric cancer metastasizing to lymph nodes. Knockdown of Wnt10B expression reduced gastric cancer cell proliferation and migration, as well as expression of a cell proliferation marker Ki67. Knockdown of Wnt10B expression inhibited tumor cell epithelial-mesenchymal transition by upregulation of E-cadherin and downregulation of N-cadherin. In addition, Wnt10B knockdown also suppressed tumor cell stemness by downregulation of octamer-binding transcription factor 4 and Nanog expression. The present data indicated that Wnt10B expression performs an important role in gastric cancer progression in vitro. Therefore, targeting of Wnt10B expression or activity may be investigated as a possible strategy for the control of gastric cancer.

Increasing evidence has shown that miRNA-451a (miR-451a) is associated with the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); however, the mechanism of this association is not fully known. The present study found an increased expression of miR-451a in the spleen and thymus of an SLE mice model. A decrease in miR-451a expression partly relieved the enlargement of the spleen and decreased the proteinuria content and immune complex deposits. The deficiency in miR-451a also decreased numbers of CD4+CD69+ and CD4+/CD8+ T cells and the levels of the serum cytokines IL-17a and IL-4. The IFN regulatory factor (IRF) 8 was highly expressed in the immune organs of wild-type mice but was suppressed in SLE-like mice. A dual-luciferase reporter assay was carried out in combination with gene silencing and overexpression to verify that IRF8 was a target of miR-451a in vitro and in vivo. The data indicate the function and a target of miR-451a in SLE, providing a new target for SLE therapy.

Aging is an irreversible physiological process that affects all humans. Numerous theories have been proposed to regarding the process from a Western medicine perspective; however, ancient Chinese medicine practices and theories have increasingly gained attention, particularly ginseng, a grass that has been studied for the anti-aging properties of its active constituents. This review seeks to analyze current data on ginseng and its anti-aging properties. The plant species, characteristics, and active ingredients will be introduced. The main part of this review is focused on ginseng and its active components with regards to their effects on prolonging lifespan, the regulation of multiple organ systems including cardiovascular, nervous, immune, and skin, as well as the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The molecular mechanisms of these properties elucidated via various studies are summarized as further evidence of the anti-aging effects of ginseng.

Tamoxifen is the most widely used adjuvant endocrine therapy for breast cancer. However, the pharmacogenetic effect of CYP2D6 on its efficacy remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association of CYP2D6*10 (c.100C>T) polymorphisms with clinical outcome in Chinese breast cancer patients. A total of 72 tamoxifen-treated early breast cancer patients were included in this study. CYP2D6*10 (c.100C>T) polymorphisms (C/C: wild type; T/T: homozygous mutant genotype T; C/T: heterozygote genotype C) were detected by pyrosequencing. The plasma concentrations of tamoxifen and its two major active metabolites were determined by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed by Kaplan-Meier analysis, while the Cox proportional hazards model was used in multivariate tests for prognostic significance. We found that T/T carrier showed the lowest serum concentration of endoxifen as compared to C/C and C/T carriers (p<0.01). In the subgroup of patients below 40 years of age, T/T carriers appeared to have the shortest DFS and OS as compared to other genotype carriers (p<0.01). When genotypes (C/C, C/T and T/T carriers) and other clinical characteristics were adjusted, tumor size (>2 cm) and grades were independent prognostic factors for DFS but not OS (tumor size >2 cm: HR: 3.870, 95% CI: 1.045-14.330, P = 0.043; tumor grades: HR: 2.230, 95% CI: 1.090-4.562, P = 0.028). In conclusion, the T/T genotype is a negative prognostic factor in young breast cancer patients using tamoxifen. Tumor size (>2 cm) and grades are independent prognostic factors for DFS, when genotype of CYP2D6*10 (c.100C>T) is adjusted.

Cell membrane chromatography is a useful tool for screening active compounds from natural products. As the reason of separation mechanism, traditional cell membrane chromatography could not be used for screening the active compounds absorbed through the cell membrane and influencing the cell signal transduction pathway. In this work, we establish a new method named cell extraction combined with off-line HPLC for screening the compounds penetrating the cell membrane. This is the first time 3 T3-L1 adipocyte culture has been combined with HPLC technology. Compared with other cell membrane chromatography methods, there is good resolution and no further analysis by other chromatographic steps is required. On co-incubating crude extracts of Coptis chinensis with cells and analyzing the compounds extracted by the cells, active compounds such as berberine were detected. Glucose consumption tests showed that berberine could increase glucose consumption by insulin-resistant 3 T3-L1 adipocytes. The levels of intracellular berberine correlated with its activity. The results indicate that the developed method could be an alternative method for screening active compounds from natural products.

Anxiety and depression are common among patients with cancer, and are often treated with psychological interventions including mindfulness-based therapy.The aim of the study was to perform a meta-analysis of the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for improving anxiety and depression in patients with cancer.Medline, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Google Scholar were searched. The randomized controlled trials designed for patients diagnosed with cancer were included. Mindfulness-based interventions were provided.The outcomes assessed were the changes in anxiety and depression scores from before to after the intervention. The treatment response was determined by calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) for individual studies and for pooled study results. Subgroup analyses by cancer type, type of therapy, and length of follow-up were performed.Seven studies, involving 469 participants who received mindfulness-based interventions and 419 participants in a control group, were included in the meta-analysis. Mindfulness-based stress reduction and art therapy were the most common interventions (5/7 studies). All studies reported anxiety and depression scores. The pooled SMD of the change in anxiety significantly favored mindfulness-based therapy over control treatment (-0.75, 95% confidence interval -1.28, -0.22, P = 0.005). Likewise, the pooled SMD of the change in depression also significantly favored mindfulness-based therapy over control (-0.90, 95% confidence interval -1.53, -0.26, P = 0.006). During the length of follow-ups less than 12 weeks, mindfulness-based therapy significantly improved anxiety for follow-up ≤12 weeks after the start of therapy, but not >12 weeks after the start of therapy.There was a lack of consistency between the studies in the type of mindfulness-based/control intervention implemented. Patients had different forms of cancer. Subgroup analyses included a relatively small number of studies and did not account for factors such as the severity of anxiety and/or depression, the time since diagnosis, and cancer stage.Mindfulness-based interventions effectively relieved anxiety and depression among patients with cancer. However, additional research is still warranted to determine how long the beneficial effects of mindfulness-based therapy persist.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that natriuretic peptides in the blood and pleural fluid (PF) are effective diagnostic markers for heart failure (HF). These natriuretic peptides include N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and midregion pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (MR-proANP). This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of blood and PF natriuretic peptides for HF in patients with pleural effusion. METHODS: PubMed and EMBASE databases were searched to identify articles published in English that investigated the diagnostic accuracy of BNP, NT-proBNP, and MR-proANP for HF. The last search was performed on 9 October 2014. The quality of the eligible studies was assessed using the revised Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool. The diagnostic performance characteristics (sensitivity, specificity, and other measures of accuracy) were pooled and examined using a bivariate model. RESULTS: In total, 14 studies were included in the meta-analysis, including 12 studies reporting the diagnostic accuracy of PF NT-proBNP and 4 studies evaluating blood NT-proBNP. The summary estimates of PF NT-proBNP for HF had a diagnostic sensitivity of 0.94 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.90-0.96), specificity of 0.91 (95% CI: 0.86-0.95), positive likelihood ratio of 10.9 (95% CI: 6.4-18.6), negative likelihood ratio of 0.07 (95% CI: 0.04-0.12), and diagnostic odds ratio of 157 (95% CI: 57-430). The overall sensitivity of blood NT-proBNP for diagnosis of HF was 0.92 (95% CI: 0.86-0.95), with a specificity of 0.88 (95% CI: 0.77-0.94), positive likelihood ratio of 7.8 (95% CI: 3.7-16.3), negative likelihood ratio of 0.10 (95% CI: 0.06-0.16), and diagnostic odds ratio of 81 (95% CI: 27-241). The diagnostic accuracy of PF MR-proANP and blood and PF BNP was not analyzed due to the small number of related studies. CONCLUSIONS: BNP, NT-proBNP, and MR-proANP, either in blood or PF, are effective tools for diagnosis of HF. Additional studies are needed to rigorously evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of PF and blood MR-proANP and BNP for the diagnosis of HF.

PURPOSE: The current study was designed to describe the symptom distress and quality of life (QoL) in Chinese oesophageal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy after radical oesophagectomy and to identify the factors that influenced symptom distress and the relationship between symptom distress and QoL. METHODS: The sample consisted of 102 oesophageal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy after radical oesophagectomy. The patients completed the Chinese versions of the M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI, an instrument that measures symptom distress), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Treatment-General (FACT-G, an instrument that measures QoL). RESULTS: The symptoms and symptom interference scores of the patients in the current research were 3.62 (SD 1.66) and 2.94 (SD 1.76), respectively. Occupation after illness, anxiety, types of surgery, whether chemotherapy was on schedule and confrontation coping strategies were factors that influenced symptom distress. There was a negative relationship between symptom distress and QoL scores. CONCLUSION: Oesophageal cancer patients receiving chemotherapy suffer many limitations due to symptom distress and disruptions in their QoL. Oesophageal cancer patients should be assessed regularly and should be supported on an ongoing basis.

PURPOSE: To explore the influence of self-efficacy and demographic, disease-related, and psychological factors on symptom distress among Chinese colorectal cancer patients receiving postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. METHODS: Two-hundred and fifty-two colorectal cancer patients who had undergone postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy completed Chinese versions of M. D. Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI-GI), Stanford Inventory of Cancer Patient Adjustment (SICPA), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Associations between patients' self-efficacy and demographic, disease-related, psychological factors and symptom distress were examined. RESULTS: Patients' overall symptom distress level was mild; MDASI median subscale scores showed mild symptom severity and symptom interference. Anxiety and depression were positively associated with symptom distress. Multivariable analysis showed that more severe symptoms were associated with age ≥60 years, female gender, suburban residence, body mass index <18.5, and stage III cancer. Age ≥60 years, female gender, marital status of single or divorced, and suburban residence were associated with greater symptom interference with daily activities. Greater self-efficacy was associated with milder symptoms severity and less symptom interference with daily life. After adjusting for confounders, patients with higher SICPA scores had less symptom distress. CONCLUSIONS: Self-efficacy is strongly associated with reduced symptom severity and symptom interference with daily life in CRC patients. Symptom severity is associated with age >60 years, female gender, body mass index <18.5, suburban residence and stage III disease. Nurse-administered self-efficacy interventions may help to improve self-efficacy and reduce symptom distress.
