RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHeath)-based HIV and sexual health promotion among men who have sex with men (MSM) is feasible in low- and middle-income settings. However, many currently available mHealth tools on the market were developed by the private sector for profit and have limited input from MSM communities. OBJECTIVE: A health hackathon is an intensive contest that brings together participants from multidisciplinary backgrounds to develop a proposed solution for a specific health issue within a short period. The purpose of this paper was to describe a hackathon event that aimed to develop an mHealth tool to enhance health care (specifically HIV prevention) utilization among Chinese MSM, summarize characteristics of the final prototypes, and discuss implications for future mHealth intervention development. METHODS: The hackathon took place in Guangzhou, China. An open call for hackathon participants was advertised on 3 Chinese social media platforms, including Blued, a popular social networking app among MSM. All applicants completed a Web-based survey and were then scored. The top scoring applicants were grouped into teams based on their skills and content area expertise. Each team was allowed 1 month to prepare for the hackathon. The teams then came together in person with on-site expert mentorship for a 72-hour hackathon contest to develop and present mHealth prototype solutions. The judging panel included experts in psychology, public health, computer science, social media, clinical medicine, and MSM advocacy. The final prototypes were evaluated based on innovation, usability, and feasibility. RESULTS: We received 92 applicants, and 38 of them were selected to attend the April 2019 hackathon. A total of 8 teams were formed, including expertise in computer science, user interface design, business or marketing, clinical medicine, and public health. Moreover, 24 participants self-identified as gay, and 3 participants self-identified as bisexual. All teams successfully developed a prototype tool. A total of 4 prototypes were designed as a mini program that could be embedded within a popular Chinese social networking app, and 3 prototypes were designed as stand-alone apps. Common prototype functions included Web-based physician searching based on one's location (8 prototypes), health education (4 prototypes), Web-based health counseling with providers or lay health volunteers (6 prototypes), appointment scheduling (8 prototypes), and between-user communication (2 prototypes). All prototypes included strategies to ensure privacy protection for MSM users, and some prototypes offered strategies to ensure privacy of physicians. The selected prototypes are undergoing pilot testing. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability of using a hackathon to create mHealth intervention tools. This suggests a different pathway to developing mHealth interventions and could be relevant in other settings.

RESUMO

Environmental xenoestrogens are the most accessible endocrine disrupting chemicals that have been reported with harmful effects on human health. Although the influences of xenoestrogens on the endocrine system have been extensively studied, it remains unclear whether these xenoestrogens can affect the digestive system in mammals. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects and the underlying mechanism of six non-steroidal synthetic estrogens (including hexestrol, diethylstilbestrol, dienestrol, bisphenol A, bisphenol AF and bisphenol Z) on pancreatic lipase (PL), a key digestive enzyme responsible for lipid digestion and absorption in mammals. The results clearly demonstrated that hexestrol, diethylstilbestrol and dienestrol exhibited strong inhibition on PL, with the IC50 values of less than 1.0 µM. Further investigations elucidated that these three synthetic estrogens functioned as mixed inhibitors of PL, with the Ki values of less than 1 µM. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations showed that diethylstilbestrol and its analogues might block the binding of substrate on PL via occupying the portal to the active site of PL and thereby inhibit the hydrolytic activity of this key enzyme. Collectively, these results suggested that diethylstilbestrol and its analogues were potent PL inhibitors, which might play a profound role in lipid absorption and weight gain in mammals.

RESUMO

STUDY DESIGN: A multi-centred, single-blinded randomised controlled trial. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of 10,000 voluntary contractions over 8 weeks on the strength of very weak muscles in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). SETTINGS: Seven hospitals in Australia and Asia. METHODS: One hundred and twenty people with recent SCI undergoing inpatient rehabilitation were randomised to either a Treatment or Control Group. One major muscle group from an upper or lower limb was selected if the muscle had grade 1 or grade 2 strength on a standard six-point manual muscle test. Participants allocated to the Treatment Group performed 10,000 isolated contractions of the selected muscle group, as well as usual care in 48 sessions over 8 weeks. Participants allocated to the Control Group received usual care alone. Participants were assessed at baseline and 8 weeks by a blinded assessor. The primary outcome was voluntary muscle strength on a 13-point manual muscle test. There were three secondary outcomes capturing therapists' and participants' perceptions of strength and function. RESULTS: The mean between-group difference of voluntary strength at 8 weeks was 0.4/13 points (95% confidence interval -0.5 to 1.4) in favour of the Treatment Group. There were no notable between-group differences on any secondary outcome. CONCLUSION: Ten thousand isolated contractions of very weak muscles in people with SCI over 8 weeks has either no or a very small effect on voluntary strength.

RESUMO

Emerging evidence highlights the role of the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) KCNQ1OT1 in fracture healing. Osteoblast proliferation, migration, and survival are pivotal during this process. In this study, we aimed to improve our understanding of the regulatory role of lncRNA KCNQ1OT1 during osteoblast proliferation, migration, and survival. We searched the gene expression omnibus databases and LncBase Experimental V.2 to identify key microRNAs (miRNAs) targets of KCNQ1OT1. MiR-701-3p was selected as a differentially expressed miRNA and RNA immunoprecipitation assays were performed to verify its interaction with KCNQ1OT1. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) was also identified as a target of miR-701-3p. We further identified KCNQ1OT1 as a competing endogenous RNA of miR-701-3p that could influence osteoblast proliferation, migration, and apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, our results indicate that the KCNQ1OT1/miR-701-3p/FGFR3 axis is an important regulator of osteoblast proliferation, migration, and apoptosis, and provide a new therapeutic avenue for fracture healing.

RESUMO

Sulfur is not normally considered a light-emitting material, even though there have been reports of a dim luminescence of this compound in the blue-to-green spectral region. Now, it is shown how to make red-emissive sulfur by a two-step oxidation approach using elemental sulfur and Na2 S as starting materials, with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 7.2 %. Polysulfide is formed first and is partially transformed into Na2 S2 O3 in the first step, and then turns back to elemental S in the second step. The elevated temperature and relatively oxygen-deficient environment during the second step transforms Na2 S2 O3 into Na2 SO3 incorporated with oxygen vacancies, thus resulting in the formation of a solid-state powder consisting of elemental S embedded in Na2 SO3 . It shows aggregation-induced emission properties, attributed to the influence of oxygen vacancies on the emission dynamics of sulfur by providing additional lower energy states that facilitate the radiative relaxation of excitons.

RESUMO

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an extremely common form of chronic joint disease which can affect the knees and other joints of older adults, leading to debilitating disability in the knee and consequent reduction in quality of life. Intra-articular platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or hyaluronic acid (HA) injections are effective for maintaining long-term beneficial effects without increasing the risk of intra-articular infection. However, few studies have compared the relative value of HA and PRP for OA treatment. PRP is more effective than HA for OA treatment in recent studies of this topic. We systematically searched Medline, SpringerLink, Embase, Pubmed, Clinical Trials.gov, the Cochrane Library, and OVID for all articles published through May 2018. Any study was included that compared the effect of HA and PRP (consistent treatment cycle and frequency of injection) on patient's pain levels and functionality improvements. Review Manager 5.3 was used to analyze data regarding these two primary outcomes. We included 10 total studies in the present meta-analysis. International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC; MD: 10.37, 95% confidence interval (CI): 9.13 to 11.62, p < 0.00001), Western Ontario and MacMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC; MD: -20.69, 95% CI: -24.50 to -16.89, p < 0.00001, I2 = 94%), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS; MD: -1.50, 95% CI: -1.61 to -1.38, p < 0.00001, I2 = 90%) differed significantly between the PRP and HA groups. Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOSs) did not differ significantly (χ2 = 23.53, I2 = 41%, p = 0.11). Our hypothesis appears not to be confirmed because PRP and HA did not differ significantly with respect to KOOS score. However, the IKDC, WOMAC, and VAS scores differed significantly. Thus, based on the current evidence, PRP appears to be better than HA at achieving pain relief and self-reported functional improvement. Ia, meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Posterior vertebrectomy with bilateral pedicle approach (BPA) is widely applied in lumber burst fracture (LBF). However, some disadvantages exist, such as a prolonged operation time, extensive soft tissue injury, and excessive blood loss. Posterior vertebrectomy with unilateral pedicle approach (UPA) is a novel technique for decompression of spinal canal. Thus, we explored the potential of UPA to achieve better outcomes than BPA. MATERIAL AND METHODS Of 47 patients who underwent posterior vertebrectomy for LBF, 23 patients were treated with UPA and 24 patients were treated with BPA. Clinical and radiographical outcomes were assessed with a follow-up of more than 24 months. Patients were evaluated before and after surgery according to the following parameter: duration of operation (DO), blood loss volume (BLV), the kyphotic angle (KA), the ratio of the height of anterior vertebral edge, the ratio of the sagittal injury, visual analog scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and Frankel scores. RESULTS The follow-up time ranged from 24 to 37 months (average 26.4 months). The UPA group had significantly decreased DO and BLV (P<0.05). The 2 cohorts showed similar performance at 6 months (P>0.05), 12 months (P>0.05), and 24 months (P>0.05) post-surgery, in terms of parameters including KA, the ratio of the vertebral anterior, the ratio of sagittal damage, Frankel scores, ODI, and VAS. CONCLUSIONS UPA and BPA had a similar clinical performance for LBF. However, the shorter DO and lower BLV achieved in the UPA cohort suggested UPA is a better alternative for LBF.

RESUMO

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) displays well-documented anti-inflammatory effects, but its effects on osteoblast differentiation have not been investigated. In this study, we found IL-10 negatively regulates microRNA-7025-5p (miR-7025-5p), the down-regulation of which enhances osteoblast differentiation. Furthermore, through luciferase reporter assays, we found evidence that insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) is a miR-7025-5p target gene that positively regulates osteoblast differentiation. In vivo studies indicated that the pre-injection of IL-10 leads to increased bone formation, while agomiR-7025-5p injection delays fracture healing. Taken together, these results indicate that IL-10 induces osteoblast differentiation via regulation of the miR-7025-5p/IGF1R axis. IL-10 therefore represents a promising therapeutic strategy to promote fracture healing.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effect of 3D-printed template technology with X-ray fluoroscopy in assisting surgery for sacroiliac screws placement. DESIGN: Institutional review board-approved retrospective analysis. PATIENTS: The clinical data of 31 cases of sacroiliac complex injury between January 2015 and December 2016 were analyzed. There were 16 patients, males 11 and females 5, who underwent surgery assisted by 3D-printed template in template group, and that of contemporaneous 15 patients, males 11 and females 4, who underwent traditional surgery were gathered as fluoroscopy group. All those patients were followed up for more than 6 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The operation time and X-ray fluoroscopy times for each screw placement, and the Matta and Majeed score were analyzed and the difference between the two group was tested. RESULTS: All cases were followed up for 6-20 months, average 11.4 ± 0.6 months. In template group, 19 screws were implanted. Each screw spent 25-38 min, average 27.2 ± 5.3 min, and need 2-5 times fluoroscopy, average 2.7 ± 0.5. The fracture reduction quality was evaluated by Matta score scale: excellent 10, well 4, fair 2, good rate 87.5%; and pelvic function were evaluated by Majeed score scale: excellent 11, well 3, fair 2, and good rate 87.5%. In fluoroscopy group, 17 screws were implanted. Each screw spent 45-70 min, average 60.3 ± 5.8 min, and needs 11-23 times fluoroscopy, average 15.4 ± 3.5. The fracture reduction quality was evaluated by Matta score scale: excellent 7, well 6, fair 2, and good rate 86.7%; and pelvic function was evaluated by Majeed score scale: excellent 6, well 6, fair 3, and good rate 80.0%. The difference in operation time, X-ray fluoroscopy times between template group and fluoroscopy group had statistical significance. But the Matta and Majeed score had no difference between two groups. CONCLUSION: Compared with traditional surgery, 3D-printed template technology-assisted surgery for sacroiliac screws placement in sacroiliac complex injury patients possesses advantage such as shortened operation time and reduced X-ray exposure times. This technology improves the safety profile of this operation and should be further studied in future clinical applications.

RESUMO

KRAS is the most frequently mutated oncogene found in pancreatic, colorectal, and lung cancers. Although it has been challenging to identify targeted therapies for cancers harboring KRAS mutations, KRASG12C can be targeted by small-molecule inhibitors that form covalent bonds with cysteine 12 (C12). Here, we designed a library of C12-directed covalent degrader molecules (PROTACs) and subjected them to a rigorous evaluation process to rapidly identify a lead compound. Our lead degrader successfully engaged CRBN in cells, bound KRASG12Cin vitro, induced CRBN/KRASG12C dimerization, and degraded GFP-KRASG12C in reporter cells in a CRBN-dependent manner. However, it failed to degrade endogenous KRASG12C in pancreatic and lung cancer cells. Our data suggest that inability of the lead degrader to effectively poly-ubiquitinate endogenous KRASG12C underlies the lack of activity. We discuss challenges for achieving targeted KRASG12C degradation and proposed several possible solutions which may lead to efficient degradation of endogenous KRASG12C.

RESUMO

At present, developing therapeutic strategies to improve wound healing in individuals with diabetes remains challenging. Exosomes represent a promising nanomaterial from which microRNAs (miRNAs) can be isolated. These miRNAs have the potential to exert therapeutic effects, and thus, determining the potential therapeutic contributions of specific miRNAs circulating in exosomes is of great importance. In the present study, circulating exosomal miRNAs are identified in diabetic patients and assessed for their roles in the context of diabetic wound healing. A significant upregulation of miR-20b-5p is observed in exosomes isolated from patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and this miRNA is able to suppress human umbilical vein endothelial cell angiogenesis via regulation of Wnt9b/ß-catenin signaling. It is found that the application of either miR-20b-5p or diabetic exosomes to wound sites is sufficient to slow wound healing and angiogenesis. In diabetic mice, it is found that knocking out miR-20b-5p significantly enhances wound healing and promotes wound angiogenesis. Together, these findings thus provide strong evidence that miR-20b-5p is highly enriched in exosomes from patients with T2DM and can be transferred to cells of the vascular endothelium, where it targets Wnt9b signaling to negatively regulate cell functionality and angiogenesis.

RESUMO

Mounting evidence indicates that serum soluble E-cadherin (sE-cadherin) serves as an important player in various physiological and pathological processes. However, the crosstalk between serum sE-cadherin and oxidative stress in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remains to be illustrated. The main purpose of this study is to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the function of sE-cadherin in CHB virus infection. Levels of serum sE-cadherin, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total oxidant activity (TOA), NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2), and malondialdehyde (MDA), from 51 patients with hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg)-negative CHB, 54 patients with HBeAg-positive CHB, and 109 healthy individuals were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In our study, patients with CHB showed significantly higher serum sE-cadherin levels than healthy individuals (P < .01). Furthermore, we also found that the serum sE-cadherin levels were significantly negatively correlated with TAC, antioxidant enzymes (GSH and SOD) in patients with CHB, and that serum sE-cadherin concentrations were significantly positively correlated with liver enzyme markers (alanine transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase) and oxidative markers (TOA, NOX2, and MDA) in patients with CHB. Therefore, serum sE-cadherin may act as a new candidate biomarker for reflecting inflammation and oxidative stress status in the development and progression of hepatitis B virus infection.

RESUMO

Fracture healing is a complex process involving various cell types, cytokines, and mRNAs. Here, we report the roles of the circRNA AFF4/miR-7223-5p/PIK3R1 axis during fracture healing. We found that increased expression of PIK3R1 during fracture healing is directly associated with augmented proliferation and decreased apoptosis of MC3T3-E1 cells. Furthermore, miR-7223-5p targeted PI3KR1 and inhibited MC3T3-E1 proliferation while promoting apoptosis. CircRNA AFF4 acted as a sponge of miR-7223-5p, thereby promoting MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. Local injection of circRNA AFF4 into femoral fracture sites promoted fracture healing in vivo while the injection of miR-7223-5p delayed healing. These findings suggest that CircRNA AFF4 promotes fracture healing by targeting the miR-7223-5p/PIK3R1 axis, and suggests miR-7223-5p, CircRNA AFF4, and the miR-7223-5p/PIK3R1 axis are potential therapeutic targets for improving fracture healing.

RESUMO

We introduce a simple approach to fabricate fluorescent multivalent metal ion-free alginate hydrogels, which can be produced using carbon dots accessible from natural sources (citric acid and L-cysteine). Molecular fluorophore 5-oxo-2,3-dihydro-5H-[1,3]-thiazolo[3,2-a] pyridine-3,7-dicarboxylic acid (TPDCA), which is formed during the synthesis of carbon dots, is identified as a key segment for the crosslinking of hydrogels. The crosslinking happens through dynamic complexation of carboxylic acid groups of TPDCA and alginate cages along with sodium ions. The TPDCA derived hydrogels are investigated regarding to their thermal, rheological and optical properties, and found to exhibit characteristic fluorescence of this aggregated molecular fluorophore. Moreover, gradient hydrogels with tunable mechanical and optical properties and controlled release are obtained upon immersion of the hydrogel reactors in solutions of divalent metal ions (Ca2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+) with a higher affinity to alginate.

RESUMO

The free and open-source package nlmixr implements pharmacometric nonlinear mixed effects model parameter estimation in R. It provides a uniform language to define pharmacometric models using ordinary differential equations. Performances of the stochastic approximation expectation-maximization (SAEM) and first order-conditional estimation with interaction (FOCEI) algorithms in nlmixr were compared with those found in the industry standards, Monolix and NONMEM, using the following two scenarios: a simple model fit to 500 sparsely sampled data sets and a range of more complex compartmental models with linear and nonlinear clearance fit to data sets with rich sampling. Estimation results obtained from nlmixr for FOCEI and SAEM matched the corresponding output from NONMEM/FOCEI and Monolix/SAEM closely both in terms of parameter estimates and associated standard errors. These results indicate that nlmixr may provide a viable alternative to existing tools for pharmacometric parameter estimation.

RESUMO

Hydrogels could be promising wound healing dressings that maintain a moist environment in the wound site and accelerate wound healing. However, the lack of antibacterial effect, suitable mechanical property and adhesiveness limits their applications. Here, we designed a quaternized chitosan-Matrigel-polyacrylamide (QCS-M-PAM) hydrogel with multi-functions. The morphology, swelling ratio, mechanical test, antimicrobial property, hemostatic performance and biocompatibility of the hybrid hydrogel were investigated in vitro and vivo. The hybrid hydrogel showed a three-dimensional (3D) microporous structure, high swelling ratio, excellent stretchable and compressive property, similar modulus to human skin, good adhesiveness, and low cytotoxicity. The results of histology and molecular testing in vivo demonstrated that the hybrid hydrogel could significantly enhance wound healing, collagen deposition, and induce skin adnexal regeneration by upregulating anti-inflammatory factors, and downregulating proinflammatory factors. Together, the present antibacterial hydrogels with hemostatic and adhesive properties are considered to have promising potential used as wound dressings for full-thickness skin defect.

RESUMO

We realized the synthesis of carbon nanorods-monodisperse colloidal particles with a length of 50 nm and a width of 20 nm-which can be considered an addition to the family of light-emitting carbon-based nanostructures. Their anisotropic shape is determined by the use of the surfactant aminopropylisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, and their optical properties originate from domains of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons incorporated within an inorganic framework. The nanorods show dual polarized emission with a quantum yield of 15-20% and emission anisotropy of ∼0.3, which changes from blue (460 nm) to yellow (565 nm) depending on the excitation wavelength. These carbon nanorods expand the range of light-emitting carbon nanomaterials available for optoelectronic and biolabeling applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Scarf osteotomy (SO) was broadly applied in moderate to severe hallux valgus (MSHV), and the results were satisfactory. However, due to the complicated pathologic changes in hallux valgus, the ideal surgical treatment is still controversial. Transfer of the abductor hallucis tendon combined with Scarf osteotomy (TAHTCSO) was an innovative alternative technique. This retrospective cohort study aimed to define if TAHTCSO mode resulted in improved outcomes as compared with the single SO in MSHV. METHODS: Of 73 patients (92 ft) with MSHV, 36 (45 ft) were treated through TAHTCSO and 37 ones (47 ft) through SO. The patients were assessed clinically and radiographically with a 24-month follow-up. They were assessed pre-operatively and post-operatively with intermetatarsal angle (IMA), hallux valgus angle (HVA), distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA), first metatarsophalangeal joint range of motion (1#MTP ROM), as well as American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) forefoot scores and postoperative complications of surgery. RESULTS: Both cohorts had the same baseline feathures. All patients were followed up from 24 to 40 months, with a mean of 28.3 months. Patients in the TAHTCSO cohort had significantly decreased HVA at 6 months (p < 0.0001), 12 months (p < 0.0001), and 24 months (p < 0.0001) after surgery. 1#MTP had been increased slightly with non-statistic sense (p>0.05). IMA, DMAA and AOFAS also had not significantly difference at all followed time after surgery as compared with the SO cohort. The healing of osteotomies was observed within 8 weeks in the two cohorts. Two cases of hallus varus had been found in SO cohort and there were no cases of delayed healing and bone non-union in both cohorts. CONCLUSION: In this retrospective cohort study, TAHTCSO had sufficient maintenance of the correction and improved functional performance thereby was a good alternative for MSHV, though it did not display a better result for MSHV compared to SO.

RESUMO

Patients who suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) show a faster fracture healing than patients with isolated fractures. Prior studies have suggested that this process may be accelerated through the inhibition of key microRNAs. In this study, we aimed to explore the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, with a special focus on miR-16-5p, which is markedly decreased in patients with TBI. In vitro, miR-16-5p over-expression significantly inhibited cell proliferation in MC3T3-E1 cells transfected with agomiR-16-5p. Flow cytometry analysis further demonstrated that the overexpression of miR-16-5p induced cell cycle G1/S phase arrest and apoptosis. Moreover, target prediction and luciferase reporter assay demonstrated that miR-16-5p could negatively regulate Bcl-2 and Cyclin-D1 expression. Meanwhile, Bcl-2 and Cyclin-D1 were up-regulated after osteogenic differentiation while the down-regulation of endogenous Bcl-2 and Cyclin-D suppressed the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. In vivo, PBS, agomiR-16-5p and antagomiR-16-5p were injected into fracture sites to assess any improvements in fracture healing, which further confirmed the negative effect of miR-16-5p on fracture healing. Together, these results demonstrate miR-16-5p downregulation may accelerate fracture healing by enhancing the proliferation and inhibiting the apoptosis of osteoblasts in patients with both fractures and TBI. These phenomena may be exploited in the treatment of fractures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis is a common source of pain among craftsmen. Although it cannot be completely resolved, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) and ultrasonics (US) have been found to be effective for tennis elbow as highlighted in previously published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and reviews. However, the efficacy of these two therapies in treating tennis elbow is unknown. This meta-analysis compares the effectiveness of ESWT and US in relieving pain and restoring the functions of tennis elbow following tendinopathy. METHODS: RCTs published in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and SpringerLink databases comparing ESWT and US in treating tennis elbow were identified by a software and manual search. The risk of bias and clinical relevance of the included studies were assessed. Publication bias was explored using funnel plot and statistical tests (Egger's test and Begg's test). The major outcomes of the studies were analyzed using the Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS: Five RCTs comprising five patients were included in the present meta-analysis. The results revealed a significantly lower VAS score of pain in the ESWT group (1 month: MD = 4.47, p = 0.0001; 3 months: MD = 20.32, p < 0.00001; and 6 months: MD = 4.32, p < 0.0001) compared to US. Besides, the grip strength was markedly higher 3 months after the intervention in ESWT (MD = 8.87, p < 0.00001) than in the US group. Although no significant difference was observed in the scores of the elbow function after 3 months of treatment (SMD = 1.51, p = 0.13), the subjective scores of elbow functions were found to be better in the ESWT group (SMD = 3.34; p = 0.0008) compared to the US group. CONCLUSIONS: Although there was no significant difference in the elbow function evaluation scores between ESWT and US, the superiority of the ESWT group in the VAS of pain (both at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months follow-ups) raised grip strength in ESWT group and the scores for subjective evaluation of efficacy indicated that ESWT offers more effective therapy for lateral epicondylitis than US therapy.
