RESUMO

Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) is regarded as a promising and sustainable process for removal of organic contaminants from wastewater. Meanwhile, enzymatic catalysis also provides an effective way to the polluted environment remediation under mild circumstances. Herein, we designed a biophotoelectrocatalytic (BPEC) system to remove 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) based on the synergy between PEC and enzymatic catalysis. The developed BPEC system was constructed with a Ag3PO4/BiVO4 photoanode and a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-loaded carbon cloth (CC) cathode. On the photoanode, the construction of direct Z-scheme Ag3PO4/BiVO4 heterojunction facilitated the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, which promoted the PEC degradation of 4-NP under visible light irradiation. After HRP was immobilized on the cathode, the degradation efficiency of 4-NP reached 97.1% after 60-min PEC treatment. The result could be ascribed to the HRP-catalyzed oxidation reaction via in-situ generated H2O2 from CC cathode during PEC process. Moreover, the possible degradation pathways of 4-NP in such a BPEC system were discussed.

Here, we report the simple construction of a supramolecular glycomaterial for the targeted delivery of antibiotics to P. aeruginosa in a photothermally-controlled manner. A galactose-pyrene conjugate (Gal-pyr) was developed to self-assemble with graphene nanoribbon-based nanowires via π-π stacking to produce a supramolecular glycomaterial, which exhibits a 1250-fold enhanced binding avidity toward a galactose-selective lectin when compared to Gal-pyr. The as-prepared glycomaterial when loaded with an antibiotic that acts as an inhibitor of the bacterial folic acid biosynthetic pathway eradicated P. aeruginosa-derived biofilms under near-infrared light irradiation due to the strong photothermal effect of the nanowires accelerating antibiotic release.

In this work, a self-powered sensor was proposed for simultaneous detection of two typical steroid hormones, namely cortisol (COR) and progesterone (P4). A tri-channel photofuel cell (PFC) consisting of three spatially resolved SnS2@SnO2 photoanodes and one Pt cathode was designed to generate the electricity to drive the sensing process under the control of a multiplex switch. Among three photoanodes, one served as the control, while the other two were modified with COR-binding or P4-binding aptamer to respond specifically to the COR or P4 target. The ratios of the inhibited PFC output from aptamer-immobilized photoanodes to the reference signal from the control photoanode were utilized for simultaneous detection of COR and P4. The results showed that the developed self-powered sensor exhibited broad concentration ranges toward targets, with COR concentration ranging from 1 nM to 1000 nM and P4 concentration ranging from 1 nM to 500 nM. The detection limits for COR and P4 were calculated to be 0.88 nM and 0.52 nM, respectively. Moreover, the proposed sensing platform demonstrated high selectivity, good reproducibility, and high stability. Finally, the sensor was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of COR and P4 in a human female serum sample.

The organocatalytic enantioselective Michael addition of functionalized prochiral cyclic hemiacetals and nitroolefins has been developed under cooperative enamine and hydrogen bond catalysis. The obtained chiral hemiacetal intermediates could be used in the subsequent diastereocontrolled cyclization/desymmetrization divergent process to access (1) 9-oxabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane or 8-oxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane frameworks via oxocarbenium ion-mediated Friedel-Crafts cyclization, and (2) 2,9-dioxabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane frameworks via intramolecular nucleophilic cyclization. Experimental results suggest that there is neighboring group participation controlling the diastereoselectivities of the desymmetrization process.

Different opinions on the oil-source correlation and migration of the Moxizhuang-Yongjin block in the Junggar Basin, NW China, have seriously affected oil and gas exploration in this area. This research is based on the results of biomarker analysis and carbon isotope of monomer hydrocarbon on crude oil and source rock samples from different blocks. Two oil families (A1, A2, and B) are classified by cluster analysis on nine typical biomarker ratios. Typically, sub-family A1 oils are distributed in the Zhuang 102 well block of the Moxizhuang block, and their gammacerane index is the highest. The abundance of C24 tetracyclic terpanes is the lowest, the C27 regular steranes are dominant, and the organic matter is mainly input by lower aquatic organisms. Sub-family A2 oils are distributed in the Zheng 1-1 well block of the Moxizhuang block. The gammacerane index of oils is lower than the former, and the abundance of C24 tetracyclic terpanes is higher. In the dual input of lower aquatic organisms and terrestrial higher plants, the input of terrestrial higher plants accounted for a larger proportion. Family B oils are distributed in the Yong 2 well block of the Yongjin block, and their gammacerane index is the lowest. They have a high abundance of C24 tetracyclic terpanes, and C29 regular steranes are dominant, reflecting the characteristics of terrigenous organic matter contribution. Based on the biomarker compound composition, at least two oil charges are indicated: Sub-family A1 oils are likely sourced from the Wuerhe formation, sub-family A2 oils may be a mixture of Wuerhe formation and Badaowan formation, and family B oils are likely sourced from the Badaowan formation. The oil families with typical genetic affinities may indicate two major petroleum systems or multiple oil systems existing in the study area. In addition, the characteristics of hydrocarbon accumulation and migration are also discussed, the oil and gas in the West Sag of Well Pen 1 and Changji Sag are filled from deep to shallow in the vertical direction and migrated from south to north in the horizontal direction, at the same time, with the help of sand bodies and faults, and they migrated to the north and northeast. This work provides a scientific basis for oil and gas exploration in the hinterland of the Junggar Basin.

As an indigenous breed, the Tibetan chicken is found in highland regions and shows physiological adaptations to high altitude; however, the genetic changes that determine these adaptations remain elusive. We assumed that the microevolution of the Tibetan chicken occurred from lowland to highland regions with a continuous elevation range. In this study, we analyzed the genome of 188 chickens from lowland areas to the high-altitude regions of the Tibetan plateau with four altitudinal levels. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Tibetan chickens are significantly different from other altitude chicken populations. Reconstruction of the demographic history showed that the migration and admixture events of the Tibetan chicken occurred at different times. The genome of the Tibetan chicken was also used to analyze positive selection pressure that is associated with high-altitude adaptation, revealing the well-known candidate gene that participates in oxygen binding (HBAD), as well as other novel potential genes (e.g., HRG and ANK2) that are related to blood coagulation and cardiovascular efficiency. Our study provides novel insights regarding the evolutionary history and microevolution mechanisms of the high-altitude adaptation in the Tibetan chicken.

To ensure a long-term quantum computational advantage, the quantum hardware should be upgraded to withstand the competition of continuously improved classical algorithms and hardwares. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting quantum computing systems Zuchongzhi 2.1, which has 66 qubits in a two-dimensional array in a tunable coupler architecture. The readout fidelity of Zuchongzhi 2.1 is considerably improved to an average of 97.74%. The more powerful quantum processor enables us to achieve larger-scale random quantum circuit sampling, with a system scale of up to 60 qubits and 24 cycles, and fidelity of FXEB=(3.66±0.345)×10-4. The achieved sampling task is about 6 orders of magnitude more difficult than that of Sycamore [Nature 574, 505 (2019)] in the classic simulation, and 3 orders of magnitude more difficult than the sampling task on Zuchongzhi 2.0 [arXiv:2106.14734 (2021)]. The time consumption of classically simulating random circuit sampling experiment using state-of-the-art classical algorithm and supercomputer is extended to tens of thousands of years (about 4.8×104 years), while Zuchongzhi 2.1 only takes about 4.2 h, thereby significantly enhancing the quantum computational advantage.

BACKGROUND: After the global elimination of smallpox, monkeypox has become the most threatening orthopoxvirus to human health. Very few studies have been reported on pregnant women and newborns. In the case of monkeypox infection, the virus can cause serious adverse pregnancy events in women, which can lead to fetal or neonatal death. DATA SOURCES: We made a comprehensive review after an extensive literature search in the PubMed/Medline database and websites concerning smallpox and monkeypox. RESULTS: Two case reports reported a total of nine pregnant women, six of whom had fetal deaths. In the autopsy of a stillbirth, researchers found that the placenta was infected with monkeypox virus, but the mechanism of infection remains unclear. Smallpox vaccine should be administered to acutely exposed pregnant women and newborns. Several novel recombinant vaccinia immunogloblin (rVIG) and human-specific monoclonal antibodies are being developed for the prevention and treatment of monkeypox virus infection. After the fetus was delivered, the newborn should take a bath as soon as possible to remove the amniotic fluid and dirt from the body. The appropriate isolation protocol for the newborn should be selected according to the infection status of the mother. It is not known whether monkeypox virus is present in breast milk, and pasteurized breast milk can be given to newborns when breastfeeding is considered. CONCLUSION: This review presents an overview of monkeypox in the perinatal period and guides the future research direction.

Electron-phonon coupling was believed to govern the carrier transport in halide perovskites and related phases. Here we demonstrate that electron-electron interaction enhanced by Cs-involved electron redistribution plays a direct and prominent role in the low-temperature electrical transport of compressed CsPbI3 and renders Fermi liquid (FL)-like behavior. By compressing δ-CsPbI3 to 80 GPa, an insulator-semimetal-metal transition occurs, concomitant with the completion of a slow structural transition from the one-dimensional Pnma (δ) phase to a three-dimensional Pmn21 (ε) phase. Deviation from FL behavior is observed upon CsPbI3 entering the metallic ε phase, which progressively evolves into a FL-like state at 186 GPa. First-principles density functional theory calculations reveal that the enhanced electron-electron coupling results from the sudden increase of the 5d state occupation in Cs and I atoms. Our study presents a promising strategy of cationic manipulation for tuning the electronic structure and carrier scattering of halide perovskites at high pressure.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated with cancer. The role of inflammation in the association of CAD with cancer remains unclear. The study investigated whether inflammation could impact the relationship between CAD and lung cancer. METHODS: The study involved 96 newly diagnosed lung cancer patients without receiving anti-cancer therapy and 288 matched non-cancer patients. All the patients underwent coronary angiography and were free from previous percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass grafting. SYNTAX score (SXscore) were used to assess severity of CAD. High SXscore (SXhigh) grade was defined as SXscore > 16 (highest quartile). Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) served as an inflammatory biomarker. NLR-high grade referred to NLR > 2.221 (median). RESULTS: Among 384 study patients, 380 patients (98.96%) had NLR value (median: 2.221, interquartile range: 1.637-3.040). Compared to non-cancer patients, lung cancer patients had higher rate of SXhigh among total study patients (P = 0.014) and among patients with NLR-high (P = 0.006), but had not significantly higher rate of SXhigh among patients with NLR-low (P = 0.839). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that SXhigh was associated with lung cancer [odds ratio (OR) = 1.834, 95% CI: 1.063-3.162, P = 0.029]. Subgroup analysis showed that SXhigh was associated with lung cancer among patients with NLR-high (OR = 2.801, 95% CI: 1.355-5.794, P = 0.005), however, the association between SXhigh and lung cancer was not significant among patients with NLR-low (OR = 0.897, 95% CI: 0.346-2.232, P = 0.823). CONCLUSIONS: Inflammation could lead different association between anatomical severity of CAD and lung cancer. Severity of CAD was significantly associated with increased risk of lung cancer among patients with high inflammation rather than among patients with low inflammation.

We report on a superoxide anion (O2˙-) responsive fluorescent probe called TCF-OTf. TCF-OTf is able to monitor O2˙- production when the bacterial species Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Enterococcus faecalis are exposed to chloramphenicol and heat shock at 50 and 58 °C.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) leads to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and is a public health problem. This meta-analysis reviewed the clinical features of SARS-CoV-2 infection among infants. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies on clinical features of infants with SARS-CoV-2 published before May 1, 2022. Two authors screened and extracted data on the number of infants with SARS-CoV-2 infection, clinical features, and number of clinical features. The proportion of asymptomatic infection, mild symptoms, moderate symptoms, severe symptoms, and the clinical features were analyzed. RESULTS: Forty-four studies with 6,304 infants with SARS-CoV-2 infections were included in this study. The proportion of asymptomatic infection was 20% (95% CI: 11-28%, I2=97%, P<0.01) in infants with SARS-CoV-2 infections. The proportion of infants with mild, moderate, and severe symptoms was 48% (95% CI: 30-65%, I2=96%, P<0.01), 27% (95% CI: 10-44%, I2=93%, P<0.01), and 8% (95% CI: 0-16%, I2=90%, P<0.01), respectively. Notably, the most common clinical features of infants with SARS-CoV-2 infection were fever (64%), cough (34%), and nasal symptoms (31%). CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis found that 20% of infants with SARS-CoV-2 infections were asymptomatic, while most infants with COVID-19 presented with mild symptoms.

Background: Thyroid tissue has a special immune microenvironment that is not well characterized. Whether immune cells have a prognostic value in the recurrence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) needs further investigation. Methods: Multinodular non-toxic goiter (MNG) was taken as normal tissue for the difficulty in obtaining completely normal thyroid tissue (normal thyroid function, no thyroiditis, and no nodules). We compared the composition of mononuclear cells (MNCs) in peripheral blood and thyroid tissues from MNG and PTC patients by high-dimensional flow cytometry profiling and verified the results by multiplex immunohistochemistry. The recurrence rates of PTC patients with different CD8+T cell subset signatures were compared using TCGA database. Results: We observed that the immune cell composition of MNG was different from that in peripheral blood. Thyroid tissue contains higher percentages of T cells and NK cells. Moreover, the percentages of memory T cells and Treg cells were higher in thyroid than in peripheral blood and increased in PTC tumors. We further focused on the antitumoral CD8+T cells and found that the expression patterns of PD-1, CD39, and CD103 on CD8+T cells were different between MNG and PTC. Importantly, we found higher percentages of PD-1+CD39+CD103+CD8+T and PD-1+CD39+CD103-CD8+T cells in PTC tumor tissues from recurrent patients than non-recurrent patients. By analyzing PTC data from TCGA database, we found that the expression patterns of these molecules were associated with different pathologic types and genders among PTC patients. Moreover, patients with PD-1hiCD39loCD103hiCD8hi, PD-1hiCD39hiCD103loCD8hi, and PD-1loCD39hiCD103hiCD8hi expression patterns have a higher 10-year recurrence-free survival. Conclusion: The immune microenvironment in MNG tissue is distinct from that in peripheral blood and paratumor tissue. More memory CD8+T cells were detected in PTC, and expression patterns of PD-1, CD39, and CD103 on CD8+T cells were significantly different in physiology and gender and associated with the recurrence rate of PTC. These observations indicate that CD8+T cell signatures may be useful prognostic markers for PTC recurrence.

Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz (Bignoniaceae), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, possesses various biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anticancer. In order to guide the practical application of O. indicum in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries, we evaluated the effects of five different extraction techniques (maceration extraction (ME), oxhlet extraction (SOXE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), tissue-smashing extraction (TSE), and accelerated-solvent extraction (ASE)) with 70% ethanol as the solvent on the phytochemical properties and biological potential. The UHPLC-DAD Orbitrap Elite MS technique was applied to characterize the main flavonoids in the extracts. Simultaneously, the antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities of the tested extracts were analyzed. SOXE extract showed the highest total phenolic content (TPC, 50.99 ± 1.78 mg GAE/g extract), while ASE extract displayed the highest total flavonoid content (TFC, 34.92 ± 0.38 mg RE/g extract), which displayed significant correlation with antioxidant activity. The extract obtained using UAE was the most potent inhibitor of tyrosinase (IC50: 16.57 ± 0.53 mg·mL-1), while SOXE extract showed the highest activity against α-glucosidase (IC50: 1.23 ± 0.09 mg·mL-1), succeeded by UAE, ME, ASE, and TSE extract. In addition, multivariate analysis suggested that different extraction techniques could significantly affect the phytochemical properties and biological activities of O. indicum. To sum up, O. indicum displayed expected biological potential and the data collected in this study could provide an experimental basis for further investigation in practical applications.

Skewed XCI plays an important role in the phenotypic heterogeneities of many X-linked disorders, even involving in diseases caused by XCI-escaping genes. DDX3X-related intellectual disability is more common in females and less common in males, who usually inherit from unaffected heterozygous mothers. As an X inactivation (XCI) escaping gene, the role of skewed XCI in the phenotype of DDX3X mutant female is unknown. Here we reported a DDX3X: c.694_711dup18 de novo heterozygous mutation in a female with intellectual disability on the maternal X chromosome on the basis of SNPs detected by PCR-sanger sequencing. AR assay revealed that the maternal mutant X chromosome was extremely inactivated in the proband. Using RNA sequencing and whole-exome sequencing, we quantified allelic read counts and allele-specific expression, and confirmed that the mutant X chromosome was inactive. Further, we verified that the mutant DDX3X allele had a lower expression level by RNA sequencing and RT-PCR, and the normal and mutated DDX3X expression accounted for respectively 70% and 30% of total. In conclusion, we found a symptomatic female with extreme skewing XCI in the DDX3X mutant allele. It was discovered that XCI in the mutant allele was insufficient to reverse the phenotype of DDX3X-related neurodevelopmental disorder. It contributed to a better understanding of the role of skewed XCI in phenotypic differences, which can aid in the genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis of disorders in females with DDX3X defects.

In the present work, a hybrid advanced oxidation process that combined laccase with photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) was explored for highly efficient degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). Visible light-responsive BiVO4 film electrode with good optical and photoelectrochemical properties was prepared via an electrodeposition method and employed as photoanode for PEC degradation of BPA. After laccase was facilely introduced into the PEC system, the BPA removal efficiency was significantly promoted, attributed to the synergistic effect of enzymatic catalysis and PEC processes. To obtain the optimum operation conditions, the effects of initial pH and applied bias potential were investigated systematically. Radicals trapping experiments revealed that •O2- dominated the biophotoelectrocatalytic degradation process, and the possible degradation pathway for BPA was proposed by identifying intermediates using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Genetic disorders are a major cause of death in critically ill infants. Several studies have assessed the diagnostic yield of rapid genomic sequencing in critically ill infants. This meta-analysis aimed to summarize the diagnostic utility of rapid genomic sequencing in critically ill infants. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, were searched before 1 July 2022. Studies reported diagnostic rate of rapid genomic sequencing in critically ill infants were selected. Two authors screened and extracted data regarding the method of genetic test, total number of patients, and number of diagnosed patients. RESULTS: Twenty-three studies, comprising 1567 critically ill infants were included in the meta-analysis. In the overall analysis, the pooled diagnostic utility of rapid genomic sequencing was 0.42 (95% CI: 0.37-0.49, I2 = 79%, P < 0.1). Moreover, the pooled diagnostic rates of rapid whole-exome and rapid whole-genome sequencing were 0.50 (95% CI: 0.41-0.61; I2 = 74%; P < 0.01) and 0.37 (95% CI: 0.30-0.46; I2 = 77%; P < 0.01), respectively. Sensitive analysis showed that the results were stable in the overall analysis. Additionally, publication bias was not observed in the overall analysis. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis proved that rapid genomic sequencing has a good diagnostic utility for critically ill infants.

In competitive sports, the training load is close to the human physiological limit, which will inevitably lead to exercise-induced fatigue. If fatigue cannot be recovered in time, it will eventually lead to excessive training and affect sport performance. Therefore, fatigue has become an important part of the physical function assessment for athletes. This paper will review animal models of long-term exercise-induced fatigue, modeling schemes of mice under treadmill and swimming training, phenotypes of long-term exercise-induced fatigue (e.g., nervous system damage, myocardial cell damage, bone mineral density changes, and skeletal muscle damage), and fatigue indicators. The relationship between physiological indicators and biomarkers and long-term exercise-induced fatigue is analyzed to promote exercise-induced fatigue monitoring. This paper attempts to provide a reference for the selection of animal models of long-term exercise-induced fatigue and provide a new theoretical basis for medical supervision and recovery of exercise-induced fatigue.

Flexible fiber electrodes are critical for high-performance fiber and wearable electronics. In this work, we presented a highly conductive all-polymer fiber electrode by vapor copolymerization of 2,5-dibromo-3,4-vinyldioxythiophene (DBEDOT) and 2,5-diiodo-3,4-vinyldioxythiophene (DIEDOT) monomers on commonly used polyester threads (PETs) at a temperature as low as 80 °C. The poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-coated PET threads maintain excellent flexibility and show conductivity of 7.93 S cm-1, nearly four times higher than that reported previously via homopolymerization of DBEDOT monomer. A MnO2 active layer was embedded into the PEDOT double layers, and the flexible fiber composite electrode showed a high linear specific capacitance of 157 mF cm-1 and improved stability, retaining 86.5% capacitance after 5000 cycles. Fiber-shaped solid-state supercapacitors (FSSCs) based on the composite electrodes were assembled, and they displayed superior electrochemical performance. This work provides a new approach to realize high-performance and stable wearable electronics.

Vernonia anthelmintica Willd (VA) is a popular medicinal plant used in local and traditional medicine to manage various disorders. In order to explore the phytochemical profile, antioxidant and enzyme modulatory activities of extracts prepared from the seeds of VA, different extraction methodologies, including modern (accelerated-ASE, ultrasound-UAE, and tissue smashing-TSE extractions) and traditional (maceration and Soxhlet) extractions, were employed and their effects on the activities of the extracts were investigated. The chemical compounds of the extracts were qualitatively analyzed by ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-Orbitrap-MS) technique. Among them, 11 compounds were undoubtedly identified by comparison with reference substance, while 13 compounds were tentatively identified by comparison with literature data, including 8 phenolic acids, 14 flavonoids and 2 esters were identified in the extracts. Additionally, the quantitative analysis found that ASE showed the highest extraction efficiency. The antioxidant activity was determined in vitro via six standard assays. Two key enzymes related to the diseases of vitiligo (tyrosinase) and type II diabetes (α-glucosidase) were adopted to assess the activity of VA extracts against them. All extracts showed potent antioxidant ability with a predominance for that obtained by ASE, which corroborated with the high phenolic (22.62 ± 0.23 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g extract) and flavonoid contents (68.85 ± 0.25 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g extract). The extracts obtained by ASE, UAE and SE could increase the tyrosinase activity and all the extracts displayed remarkable inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase. This study demonstrated that the VA extracts obtained by novel extraction techniques such as ASE, could be considered as a positive candidate to be utilized by the food and medical industries, not only for obtaining bioactive compounds to be used as natural antioxidants, but possibly also for its health benefits for therapeutic bio-product development.
