RESUMO

Spermatogenesis is usually accompanied throughout mammalian lifetime, transmitting genetic information to the next generation, which is mainly dependent on the self-renewal and differentiation of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). With further investigation on profiles of SSCs, the previous prevailing orthodoxy that SSCs are unipotent stem cells to differentiate into spermatids only, has been challenged. More notably, accumulating evidence has demonstrated that SSCs are capable of giving rise to cell lineages of the three germ layers, highlighting potential important applications of SSCs for regenerative medicine. Nevertheless, it is unknown how the proliferation and stemness maintenance of SSCs are regulated intrinsically and strictly controlled in a special niche microenvironment in the seminiferous tubules. Based on the special niche microenvironment for SSCs, it is of vital interest to summarize the recent knowledge regarding several critical bioactive molecules in the self-renewal and stemness maintenance of SSCs. In this review, we discuss most recent findings about these critical bioactive factors and further address the new advances on the self-renewal and stemness maintenance of SSCs.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of hand osteoarthritis result in activity limitations and lower quality of life. Hydroxychloroquine, which has been used successfully in the treatment of many autoimmune diseases, can suppress inflammation and might also be beneficial in hand osteoarthritis. METHODS: We plan to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trial to determine the symptom-modifying effect of hydroxychloroquine in hand osteoarthritis. We will search PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science using a comprehensive strategy. The related conference proceedings and reference lists of the included studies will also be checked to identify additional studies. Two reviewers will screen retrieved records, extract information and assess the risk of bias independently. Stata v15.1 software will be used to conduct data synthesis. RESULTS: This study will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. CONCLUSION: We hope it will provide a relatively comprehensive reference for clinical practice and future relevant clinical trials. INPLASY REGISTRATION NUMBER: INPLASY2020110005.

Background: To evaluate the role of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in the diagnosis of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) pneumonia and to provide experience in the early detection and diagnosis of 2019-nCoV pneumonia. Methods: Seventy-two patients confirmed to be infected with 2019-nCoV from multiple medical centers in western China were retrospectively analyzed, including epidemiologic characteristics, clinical manifestations, laboratory findings and HRCT chest features. Results: All patients had lung parenchymal abnormalities on HRCT scans, which were mostly multifocal in both lungs and asymmetric in all patients, and were mostly in the peripheral or subpleural lung regions in 52 patients (72.22%), in the central lung regions in 16 patients (22.22%), and in both lungs with "white lung" manifestations in 4 patients (5.56%). Subpleural multifocal consolidation was a predominant abnormality in 38 patients (52.78%). Ground-glass opacity was seen in 34 patients (47.22%). Interlobular septal thickening was found in 18 patients, 8 of whom had only generally mild thickening with no zonal predominance. Reticulation was seen in 8 patients (11.11%), and was mild and randomly distributed. In addition, both lungs of 28 patients had 2 or 3 CT imaging features. Out of these 72 patients, 36 were diagnosed as early stage, 32 patients as progressive stage, and 4 patient as severe stage pneumonia. Moreover, the diagnostic accuracy of HRCT features combined with epidemiological history was not significantly different from the detection of viral nucleic acid (all P >0.05). Conclusions: The HRCT features of 2019-nCoV pneumonia are characteristic to a certain degree, which when combined with epidemiological history yield high clinical value in the early detection and diagnosis of 2019-nCoV pneumonia.

Background: Primary bilateral macronodular adrenocortical hyperplasia (PBMAH) is a rare condition with untypical subclinical symptoms of Cushing's syndrome (CS). This study aimed to compare the clinical and pathological features of PBMAH with unilateral cortisol-secreting adrenal adenoma (UAA). Methods: We prospectively included 46 PBMAH patients and 205 UAA patients from January 2000 to February 2014. Cortisol levels and 24 hours urine free cortisol (UFC) were determined at baseline and during dexamethasone suppression test (DST) using the chemiluminescence method. Computed tomography (CT) examination of the adrenal glands was performed in all patients. For patients treated with adrenalectomy, hematoxylin, and eosin, staining was performed for pathological examination. Results: The proportion of patients with autonomous cortisol secretion was significantly higher in PBMAH patients (39.1%) than UAA patients (6.8%). The PBMAH patients showed significantly lower levels of basal cortisol, low dose dexamethasone suppressed cortisol, and high dose dexamethasone suppressed cortisol than the UAA patients (452.6±183.3 vs. 578.7±166.4 nmol/L, P=0.003; 394.5±298.9 vs. 549.2±217.7 nmol/L, P=0.002; 397.3±282.3 vs. 544.3±187.6 nmol/L, P=0.003). Similarly, the PBMAH patients had significantly lower levels of basal 24 hours UFC, low dose dexamethasone suppressed 24 hours UFC, and high dose dexamethasone suppressed 24 hours UFC than the UAA patients (1,144.4±1,048.1 vs. 1,674.9±1,520.4 nmol/24 h, P=0.032; 1,157.3±1,483.5 vs. 1,940.1±1,360.9 nmol/24 h, P=0.003; 1,256.4±1,767.0 vs. 1,969.9±1,361.7 nmol/24 h, P=0.011). Conclusions: PBMAH is often associated with atypical CS symptoms. The clinical and imaging features of PBMAH are useful for the differential diagnosis of this disease.

Ageratina adenophora has invaded many subtropical and tropical countries and caused tremendous ecological and economic losses. This necessitates a new way to use the debris left after clearing this plant. Therefore, the allelochemicals in fresh and aerobically composted A. adenophora plants (FA and CA, respectively) were compared, and their allelopathy against maize was evaluated. The results showed that CA decreased the allelochemicals (6-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-3,8-dimethyl-4a,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydronaphthalen-2(1H)-one and 4,7-dimethyl-1-(propan-2-ylidene)-1,4,4a,8a-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6(1H, 7H)-dione) by over 95% compared to FA. In a seed germination test, CA aqueous solutions improved the seed germination and seedling growth, whereas FA solutions led to opposite results. Chemical fertilizers (CF) plus FA resulted in much lower plant biomass and nutrient uptake than CF in a greenhouse experiment. Compared with CF, CF+CA showed positive effects on maize, soil microbial biomass and diversity and enzyme activities in the field. However, the compositions of the predominant microbes were almost unaffected by the application of CA and CF+CA. These significant findings extended our knowledge regarding the elimination of A. adenophora toxicity against other plants and soil microbes through allelochemical degradation in the composting process. In situ aerobic composting provides a new, simple and economical method to convert A. adenophora into a plant- and soil-friendly organic fertilizer.

Abnormal excessive production and deposition of ß-amyloid (Aß) peptides in selectively susceptible brain regions are thought to be a key pathogenic mechanism underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD), resulting in memory deficits and cognitive impairment. Genistein is a phytoestrogen with great promise for counteracting diverse Aß-induced insults, including oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. However, the exact molecular mechanism or mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of genistein against Aß-induced insults are largely uncharacterized. To further elucidate the possible mechanism(s) underlying these protective effects, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of genistein against Aß-induced oxidative stress mediated by orchestrating α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) signaling in rat primary hippocampal neurons. Genistein significantly increased cell viability, reduced the number of apoptotic cells, decreased accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), decreased contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), upregulated BCL-2 expression, and suppressed Caspase-3 activity occurring after treatment with 25 µM Aß25-35. Simultaneously, genistein markedly inhibited the decreases in α7nAChR mRNA and protein expression in cells treated with Aß25-35. In addition, α7nAChR signaling was intimately involved in the genistein-mediated activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt and Nrf2/keap1 signaling. Thus, α7nAChR activity together with the PI3K/Akt/Nrf2 signaling cascade likely orchestrates the molecular mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effects of genistein against Aß-induced oxidative injury.

In this paper, we theoretically design a dual-band graphene-based terahertz (THz) absorber combining the magnetic resonance with a THz cold mirror without any metallic loss. The absorption spectrum of the all-dielectric THz absorber can be actively manipulated after fabrication due to the tunable conductivity of graphene. After delicate optimization, two ultra-narrow absorption peaks are achieved with respective full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.0272 THz and 0.0424 THz. Also, we investigate the effect of geometric parameters on the absorption performance. Coupled mode theory (CMT) is conducted on the dual-band spectrum as an analytic method to confirm the validity of numerical results. Furthermore, physical mechanism is deeply revealed with magnetic and electric field distributions, which demonstrate a totally different principle with traditional plasmonic absorber. Our research provides a significant design guide for developing tunable multi-resonant THz devices based on all-dielectric configuration.

Background and Aim: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is currently prevalent worldwide. This research aimed to explore the effect of adverse childhood experience (ACE) on suicide ideation in young cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-reported questionnaires analyzed the mediating effects of sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and inflammatory conditions between ACE and suicide ideation. Materials and Methods: A total of 197 young cancer patients (age 18-40) completed questionnaires and a blood test. Correlation analysis and structural equation model were used to explore the relationships between ACE, sleep quality, anxiety symptom, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and suicide ideation. The mediating roles of sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and CRP levels on the influence of ACE on suicide ideation were explored. Results: ACE was positively related to anxiety symptoms, CRP levels, and suicide ideation, and negatively related to sleep quality. Anxiety symptoms and CRP levels were positively related to suicide ideation, while sleep quality was negatively related to suicide ideation. Anxiety symptoms were positively related to CRP levels but negatively related to sleep quality. From these results, we found ACE affected suicide ideation directly and was mediated by roles sleep quality, anxiety symptom and CRP. Conclusion: ACE not only directly affected suicide ideation but also affected suicide ideation through sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and inflammatory conditions in young cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, targeted intervention and help for cancer patients from the perspective of ACE should be put into practice.

Multifold wave-particle quantum correlations are studied in strongly correlated three-photon emissions from the Mollow triplet via frequency engineering. The nonclassicality and the non-Gaussianity of the filtered field are discussed by correlating intensity signal and correlated balanced homodyne signals. Due to the non-Gaussian fluctuations in the Mollow triplet, new forms of the criterion of nonclassicality for non-Gaussian radiation are proposed by introducing intensity-dual quadrature correlation functions, which contain the information about strongly correlated three-photon emissions of the Mollow triplet. In addition, the time-dependent dynamics of non-Gaussian fluctuations of the filtered field is studied, which displays conspicuous asymmetry. Physically, the asymmetrical evolution of non-Gaussian fluctuations can be attributed to the different transition dynamics of the laser-dressed quantum emitter revealed by the past quantum state and conditional quantum state. Compared with the conventional three-photon intensity correlations that unilaterally reflect the particle properties of radiation, the multifold wave-particle correlation functions we proposed may convey more information about wave-particle duality of radiation, such as the quantum coherence of photon triplet and "which-path" in cascaded photon emissions in atomic systems.

The anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) has been suggested to be more common in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Here, we performed a retrospective study investigated the correlation between TgAb level and PTC in Chinese patients between 2011 and 2015. Patients with goiter who underwent thyroidectomy and received a confirmed pathological diagnosis were enrolled into the study. Clinical characteristics and preoperative thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) level data were collected from all enrolled patients. Based on the preoperative TgAb test results, patients were divided into a TgAb negative (TgAb-) group (<60 IU/mL) and a TgAb positive (TgAb+) group (≧60 IU/mL). Of the 4,046 patients, 671 patients were TgAb+ while 3,375 patients were TgAb-. There were 535 (79.7%) patients with PTC in the TgAb+ group, and 2,154 (63.8%) patients with PTC in the TgAb- group. The prevalance of PTC was significantly higher in TgAb+ patients than in TgAb- patients. TgAb+ patients were stratified into four groups based on the TgAb titer. The prevalence of PTC did not increase with TgAb titer. No significant difference in TgAb level was noted in patients with different clinicopathologies, including TNM stage, lymph node metastasis, and multifocal carcinoma. Regression analysis suggested a higher risk of PTC malignancy among TgAb+ patients. Preoperative TgAb level ≥60 IU/mL might be associated with a higher risk of PTC. However, there was no titer-dependent association between elevated TgAb titer and PTC malignancy.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Given that mutations related to maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) are rarely found in Chinese populations, we aim to characterize the mutation spectrum of MODY pedigrees. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maturity-onset diabetes of the young candidate gene- or exome-targeted capture sequencing was carried out in 76 probands from unrelated families fulfilling the clinical diagnostic criteria for MODY. MAF <0.01 in the GnomAD or ExAC database was used to filter significant variants. Sanger sequencing was then carried out to validate findings. Function prediction by SIFT, PolyPhen-2 and PROVEAN or CADD was carried out in missense mutations. RESULTS: A total of 32 mutations in six genes were identified in 31 families, accounting for 40.79% of the potential MODY families. The MODY subtype detection rate was 18.42% for GCK, 15.79% for HNF1A, 2.63% for HNF4A, and 1.32% for KLF11, PAX4 and NEUROG3. Seven nonsense/frameshift mutations and four missense mutations with damaging prediction were newly identified novel mutations. The clinical features of MODY2, MODY3/1 and MODYX are similar to previous reports. Clinical phenotype of NEUROG3 p.Arg55Glufs*23 is characterized by hyperglycemia and mild intermittent abdominal pain. CONCLUSIONS: This study adds to the emerging pattern of MODY epidemiology that the proportion of MODY explained by known pathogenic genes is higher than that previously reported, and found NEUROG3 as a new causative gene for MODY.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is one of the most common public health concerns in the world. Baduanjin is very widely and popularly practiced for the management of CSR. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of Baduanjin exercise for patients with CSR. METHODS: The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Clinical Trials.gov, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Wan Fang database, and VIP databases were searched from inception to July 2019 to identify potentially eligible studies. The methodological quality of the included studies using the risk bias assessment tool of Cochrane. All statistical analysis are conducted with Revman 5.3. RESULTS: This systematic review and meta-analysis will provide a synthesis of existing evidences for the treatment of Baduanjin on CSR. CONCLUSION: The conclusions of this study will provide evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of Baduanjin for CSR, which can further guide the promotion and clinical decisions. BACKGROUND AIMS: The pro-regeneration capabilities of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) remain controversial. However, little is known regarding whether the transplantation of activated OECs by curcumin (CCM) elicits neural regeneration and functional recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats, and the possible molecular mechanisms have never been investigated. METHODS: Primary OECs were treated with 1µM CCM for 1-3 days. Concomitantly, activated OECs were transplanted into the traumatic spinal cord of Sprague Dawley rats. One to 9 weeks after surgery, the assessment of behavior recovery was made using the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor scale; electrophysiology tests, such as somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) and motor evoked potential (MEP); and the cylinder test. Pathological study, including hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunofluorescence staining for neurofilaments (NFs), was conducted at 5 weeks post-surgery. In addition, activation profiles of OECs by CCM stimulus were assessed and levels of transglutaminase-2 (TG2) and phosphatidylserine receptor (PSR) in OECs stimulated by CCM were further determined. RESULTS: CCM remarkably enhanced OEC proliferation, improved cell viability and strengthened secretion of neurotrophins and anti-inflammatory factors. In addition, the levels of TG2 and PSR in CCM-treated OECs were significantly elevated. More importantly, beyond 1 week post-transplantation of CCM-treated OECs into lesioned spinal cord, BBB score and cylinder test score were significantly higher than that seen in the other three groups and a more postponed latent SEP and MEP period was noted. Furthermore, 5 weeks later, numerous, well-arranged NF-positive nerve fibers, lesions with less cavities and reduced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were found in activated OEC implantation groups. In addition, the number of NF-positive fibers was significantly improved and the number and area of both cavities and gliotic scars were remarkably decreased compared with the corresponding controls. CONCLUSIONS: Transplantation of OECs activated by CCM promotes neural regeneration and functional recovery following SCI, the underlying mechanisms of which are intimately associated with the elevated production of neurotrophic factors and anti-inflammatory factors in OECs stimulated by CCM as well as reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines from the post-contusion spinal cord. In addition, OECs activated by CCM were mediated through TG2 and PSR.

Co-substituted LaFeO3 was electrodeposited on the surface of BiVO4 as a co-catalyst to enhance the water splitting performance. Compared to bare BiVO4, the BiVO4/Co-LaFeO3 composite photoanode shows a water oxidation photocurrent of 3.4 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus reverse hydrogen electrode, accompanied by a notable cathodic shift in the onset potential for 300 mV. Combined optical and electrochemical characterizations show that the solid/electrolyte charge transfer efficiency of BiVO4 are dramatically improved by the incorporation of Co-substituted LaFeO3. From the surface kinetic study of charge carriers by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy, a suppressed surface recombination rate constant is observed and the enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting performance observed in the BiVO4/Co-LaFeO3 photoanode is attributed to the surface passivation effect of Co-substituted LaFeO3.

The intensity-amplitude correlation functions for a driven cavity QED system with two non-identical atoms are investigated in this paper. With the support of conditional homodyne detection, one can detect the time-dependent intensity-amplitude correlation functions experimentally. We find time-asymmetry in this correlation when the driving field is tuned to be resonant with the two-photon excitation state, which brings non-Gaussian fluctuations. The physical origin of these phenomena is the distinction of the third-order moment based on complete-collapse and partial-collapse, which corresponds to the measuring sequence of the intensity and amplitude. Finally, we also examined the nonclassical features of the system, which always exhibits photon bunching. The squeezing occurs in the region of weak driving and disappears with the increase of driving strength. Hence, a new classical inequality based on the technique of homodyne cross-correlation measurement is introduced to determine the nonclassicality of the non-Gaussian system in the region of unsqueezing.

Phase change materials (PCMs), widely used in thermal management filed, can store or release thermal energy during phase-changing processes, but the inherent low thermal conductivity and leakage problem restrict their practical applications. Herein, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) doped cellulosic scaffolds (CS) were used as novel support materials to construct shape-stabilized PCM with enhanced thermal conductivity. The composite PCM exhibits excellent shape stability against pressure, tension and bending (90°) even at high loading of the solid-liquid PCM polyethylene glycol (PEG) (95.6 wt%). The resulting composite PCMs have enthalpy capacity (ΔHm/ΔHc) ranged from 165.3 J g-1/169.3 J g-1 to 169.1 J g-1/176.1 J g-1 with stable cycling reliability. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of the composite PCM could increase by 42.8% at a low loading of BNNSs (1.9 wt%), without affecting its electrical insulation properties (over 107 Ω cm). The thermally-conductive shape-stabilized PCM composite prepared by this feasible method have great potential in thermal management of electronics.

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune hypothalamitis (AHT) is a rare inflammatory disorder that involves the hypothalamus. It remains unclear whether autoimmune hypophysitis (AH) and AHT represent different diseases or different aspects of the same disease. Thus, further investigation of AHT is required. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical and pathological records of AHT patients from the Chinese PLA General Hospital were examined from January 1, 2005 to May 1, 2017. Clinical data, treatments, and outcomes were investigated. RESULTS: Five female patients were identified (median age, 42.6 years). Symptoms included central diabetes insipidus, hypopituitarism, hyperprolactinemia, headache, and hypothalamic syndrome. The following hormonal deficits were noted: follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, and growth hormone. One patient underwent high-dose methylprednisolone pulse treatment (HDMPT) and azathioprine plus intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and two patients underwent HDMPT and two rounds of replacement therapy. During follow-up, one patient died because of non-compliance with therapy and the others were in remission or they recovered. CONCLUSIONS: AHT had similar MRI results, pathology, and treatment compared with AH. Thus, it may be a subtype of AH, and AHT patients may also show hypothalamic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Rice stripe virus (RSV) is one of the most serious rice diseases in East Asia. The small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus, is an economically important rice pest. SBPH transmits RSV horizontally and vertically, resulting in serious rice economic losses. Exposure to sublethal doses of insecticides can induce many physiological and cellular changes in insects. However, the mechanism underlying triazophos-induced RSV vertical transmission remains unclear. Here, we investigated the role of vitellogenin (Vg) in triazophos-induced RSV vertical transmission. RESULTS: RSV vertical transmission rates were significantly induced by sublethal exposure to triazophos. The transcript abundance of viral RNA3 segment (RNA3) and capsid protein (CP) in the ovaries of SBPH were also significantly increased. Triazophos induced the expression level of Vg in L. striatellus (LsVg) and increased the contents of ovarian protein and fat body protein. Knockdown of Vg significantly reduced the expression levels of LsVg and Vg receptor (LsVgR), and decreased RSV accumulations in the ovaries. Double-stranded Vg (dsVg)-mediated down-regulation could be rescued by exposure to triazophos. Vertical transmission rate of the dsVg-injected group was significantly decreased compared with the dsGFP-injected group, and triazophos significantly rescued the RSV vertical transmission rate of the dsVg-injected group. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that triazophos-induced RSV vertical transmission is associated with Vg. This work will help us to further elucidate sublethal doses of insecticides-mediated effects and develop new strategies for pest control. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) can involve extralymphatic organs, resulting in diverse clinical manifestations, especially if the endocrine organs are affected. This type of involvement can often be difficult to detect accurately. Until now, no patients with NHL and concomitant bilateral adrenal and hypothalamic involvement have been reported. The purpose of this article is to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma with bilateral adrenal gland and hypothalamic involvement so as to help physicians avoid misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: We describe a case of a 52-years-old male patient with bilateral adrenal masses, who presented with a fever of unknown origin on admission. Subsequently, hypopituitarism of the anterior pituitary followed by posterior pituitary developed. 18fluorine-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) showed lesions with a high metabolism in both adrenal glands, hypothalamus, left supraclavicular lymph nodes, and other organs. The etiological diagnosis was determined based on a left supraclavicular lymph node biopsy. The patient, who eventually present with panhypopituitarism, was finally diagnosed with diffuse large B cell lymphoma with bilateral adrenal gland and hypothalamic involvement. After immunochemotherapy, glucocorticoids administration and desmopressin acetate replacement therapy, the symptoms of fever and panhypopituitarism improved, and all the lesions reduced in size. CONCLUSION: This report demonstrates that, although synchronous involvement of two endocrine organs is rare in NHL, extra caution should be taken when dysfunction occurs in multiple endocrine organs.
