RESUMO

Traditional methods cannot efficiently recover Cu from Cu(II)-EDTA wastewater and encounter the formation of secondary contaminants. In this study, an ozone/percarbonate (O3/SPC) process was proposed to efficiently decomplex Cu(II)-EDTA and simultaneously recover Cu. The results demonstrate that the O3/SPC process achieves 100% recovery of Cu with the corresponding kobs value of 0.103 min-1 compared with the typical •OH-based O3/H2O2 process (81.2%, 0.042 min-1). The carbonate radical anion (CO3•-) is generated from the O3/SPC process and carries out the targeted attack of amino groups of Cu(II)-EDTA for decarboxylation and deamination processes, resulting in successive cleavage of Cu-O and Cu-N bonds. In comparison, the •OH-based O3/H2O2 process is predominantly responsible for the breakage of Cu-O bonds via decarboxylation and formic acid removal. Moreover, the released Cu(II) can be transformed into stable copper precipitates by employing an endogenous precipitant (CO32-), accompanied by toxic-free byproducts in the O3/SPC process. More importantly, the O3/SPC process exhibits excellent metal recovery in the treatment of real copper electroplating wastewater and other metal-EDTA complexes. This study provides a promising technology and opens a new avenue for the efficient decomplexation of metal-organic complexes with simultaneous recovery of valuable metal resources.

RESUMO

The optimal SLM conditions of 304L stainless steel were obtained by single factor and orthogonal tests. Results indicated that the optimal hardness (75 HRB) and Relative Density (RD 99.24%) could be obtained when the laser output power was 190 W, the scanning distance was 0.09 mm and the scanning speed was 800 mm/s. The microstructure of fish scales was uniform and compact with a few pores in the optimal sample. The fine particles were randomly distributed near the edge of the molten pool, and some preferred granular columnar crystal structures were formed. Abundant entanglement dislocations were observed between cell structures, forming dislocation clusters. Spherical nano-precipitates, rich in Si, Mn, and O, were also observed near cell structures. The mechanical properties of the specimens were highly anisotropic, and there were obvious necking and ductility at the tensile fracture.

RESUMO

The curved photonic nanojet (CPNJ) produced due to the interaction between a dielectric circular cylinder rotating at a stable angular velocity and a plane wave is investigated. Based on this model, the optical Magnus effect of a dielectric circular cylinder is verified. And the analytical expression of both internal and external electric field are given based on the instantaneous rest-frame theory and the partial-wave series expansion method in cylindrical coordinates. The influence of the size parameter, the relative refractive index, and the rotating dimensionless parameter on the CPNJ are analyzed and discussed in numerical results. The "photonic nanojet curved" effect is highlighted, which can be used to generate the off-axis photonic nanojet (PNJ) controlling particles by adjusting the angular velocity of the dielectric cylinder. The results of this manuscript have promising application prospects in optical tweezers, particle manipulation, and optical trapping. Moreover, it also provides theoretical support for the particle spinning and generation of the off-axis CPNJ.

RESUMO

Background: Asthma is a hackneyed chronic inflammatory disease of the airway. Chryseriol (CSR) is a kind of flavonoid, and has the effect of bronchiectasis, indicating its potential application for treating respiratory diseases. However, the functions of CSR in asthma have not been reported till now. Materials and methods: The histopathologic changes of the lung tissues were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. The cell apoptosis was identified through terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labelling assay. Total numbers of eosinophils, neutrophils, and macrophages were assessed under microscope. The levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 were detected by enzyme-linked-immunosorbent serologic assay. The airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR) was evaluated by the whole body plethysmography. The levels of methane dicarboxylic aldehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, and glutathione in lung homogenates were confirmed by using corresponding commercial kits. The protein expressions were examined by Western blot analysis. Results: The ovalbumin (OVA) was utilized to establish asthma mouse model. At first, it was revealed that CSR treatment reduced lung injury in OVA-stimulated mice. Moreover, cell apoptosis was enhanced after OVA stimulation but was attenuated by CSR treatment. In addition, CSR treatment decreased the infiltration of inflammatory cells and the production of inflammatory factors in OVA-treated mice. Further investigations demonstrated that CSR treatment relieved AHR in OVA-stimulated mice. The oxidative stress was strengthened in OVA-treated mice, but these effects were relieved by CSR treatment. Lastly, it was discovered that CSR treatment retarded nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB)/hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) pathways in OVA-triggered asthma mice (AU)

CONCLUSION: Our findings proved that CSR attenuated the progression of OVA-induced asthma in mice through inhibiting NF-κB/HIF-1α and MAPK/STAT1 pathways. This work might highlight the functions of CSR in the treatment of asthma.

RESUMO

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common and fatal disease with a pathology involving endothelial dysfunction. The present research aimed to address the potential clinical significance of miR-125a-5p in DVT and its effect on the dysfunction of Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Serum miR-125a-5p levels were measured using RT-qPCR in 88 patients with DVT and 76 healthy controls. ROC was plotted to evaluate the diagnostic potential of miR-125a-5p. Spearman's correlation coefficient was performed to calculate the correlation between miR-125a-5p and clinical indicators. CCK-8, Transwell, and ELISA were employed to verify the effects of cell proliferation, migration, and inflammatory and adhesion molecules. Dual-luciferase reporter assay to analyze potential target for miR-125a-5p. Serum miR-125a-5p was reduced in patients with DVT compared with healthy controls (P < 0.001). ROC showed that miR-125a-5p significantly identified patients with DVT from the healthy controls (AUC = 0.834). Furthermore, serum miR-125a-5p was negatively correlated with inflammatory factors and coagulation factors. In in vitro studies, proliferation and migration of HUVECs were inhibited by suppressed miR-125a-5p, whereas inflammation and adhesion factors were considerably promoted (P < 0.05). Moreover, miR-125-5p directly targeted the 3'UTR of angiopoietin 2 (ANGPT2) and was negatively regulated. Finally, serum ANGPT2 was elevated in patients with DVT and was negatively correlated with serum miR-125a-5p. The current research demonstrated that decreased miR-125a-5p was a novel potential diagnostic biomarker for DVT and that it may be involved in DVT progression by targeting ANGPT2 to regulate endothelial dysfunction.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study examines the impact of older adults' online social networks on their COVID-19 anxiety, directly or indirectly through social transmission of negative information about COVID-19. Social networks were indexed by both bonding capital (i.e., social relationships formed with family and friends) and bridging capital (i.e., social relationships formed through casual social networks). Methods: An on-line survey was conducted with 190 older adults who were in self-isolation in Ontario in the early waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Results: Bonding and bridging capital showed different impacts on older adults' informational behavior and COVID-19 anxiety. While bonding capital deterred older adults from transmitting negative COVID-19 information and thus reduced COVID-19 anxiety, bridging capital contributed to increased dissemination of negative information and thus heightened older adults' anxiety. Discussion: Our findings shed light on the detrimental behavioral and psychological impact of casual online social networks on older adults amidst a public health crisis.

RESUMO

Investigations on placental P-glycoprotein (P-gp) regulation could provide more therapeutic targets for individualized and safe pharmacotherapy during pregnancy. The role of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) on placental P-gp regulation is lacking. The present study was carried out to investigate the regulation and underlying mechanisms of lncRNA urothelial carcinoma associated 1 (UCA1) on P-gp in Bewo cells. lncRNA UCA1 inhibition or overexpression could decrease or increase ABCB1 mRNA expression, P-gp expression and its cellular efflux function, respectively. RNA-FISH revealed that lncRNA UCA1 was mainly located in the cytoplasm of Bewo cells. MicroRNA array was applied and 10 significant miRNAs was identified after lncRNA UCA1 inhibition. Databases of LncTarD, LncRNA2Target, and miRcode were further used to search potential target miRNAs of lncRNA UCA1 and miR-16-5p was screened out. Thereafter, we confirmed that miR-16-5p expression was significantly upregulated or reduced after lncRNA UCA1 knockdown or overexpression, respectively. Furthermore, we also proved that ABCB1 mRNA expression, P-gp expression and its cellular efflux function was enhanced or reduced after miR-16-5p inhibition or overexpression, respectively. The rescue experiment further indicated that miR-16-5p was involved in the positive regulation of lncRNA UCA1 on the expression and function of P-gp. Lastly, dual-luciferase reporter system, RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation and RNA pull-down assays were performed to explore the relationships among lncRNA UCA1, miR-16-5p, and ABCB1. It was found that lncRNA UCA1(1103-1125) could directly interact with miR-16-5p and miR-16-5p could directly target ABCB1 coding DNA sequence region (882-907). In conclusion, LncRNA UCA1 could promote the expression and function of P-gp by sponging miR-16-5p in BeWo cells.

RESUMO

The addition of green tea as antioxidants to beer can improve the beer's flavor stability by protecting against staling during storage. To analyze the effect of different green teas on the flavor stability of beer, we developed an approach to rapidly evaluate their antioxidant activity. Ten types of craft beer were produced by adding different kinds of green tea during brewing, and their antioxidant activity and phenolic profiles were evaluated. The results showed remarkable variations in antioxidant activity and antioxidative compound contents, which were considerably higher in green tea beers than in non-tea beer (p < 0.05). A comprehensive evaluation function was developed to evaluate the total antioxidant activity of beers using principal component analysis. The highest total antioxidant activity was observed in Taiping Houkui beer, with a comprehensive evaluation score of 2.53. Pearson correlation analysis suggested that (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, (-)-epicatechin gallate, and (-)-epigallocatechin were strongly correlated with the total antioxidant activity of green tea beers (p < 0.01). The summation of their contents represented more than 60% of the total phenolic content of the teas, which can be used to predict the total antioxidant activity of green tea beers. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Flavor stability is of prime concern for brewers, and flavor aging is increasingly becoming the limiting factor in beer shelf life. The application of green tea as antioxidants in beer can improve the flavor stability by protecting against beer staling during storage. The analytical method developed in this study will contribute to the rapid comparison of the effect of different green teas on the flavor stability of beer. Furthermore, the research findings demonstrate the potential benefits of green teas to beer flavor stability, which is of considerable importance in promoting the development and consumption of green teas.

RESUMO

The ability to sculpt complex reference waves and probe diverse radiation field patterns have facilitated the rise of metasurface antennas, while there is still a compromise between the required wide operation band and the non-overlapping characteristic of radiation field patterns. Specifically, the current computational image formation process with a classic matched filter and other sparsity-driven algorithms would inevitably face the challenge of a relatively confined scene information sampling ratio and high computational complexity. In this paper, we marry the concepts of a deep convolutional neural network with computational imaging literature. Compared with the current matched filter and compressed sensing reconstruction technique, our proposal could handle a relatively high correlation of measurement modes and low scene sampling ratio. With the delicately trained reconstruction network, point-size objects and more complicated targets can both be quickly and accurately reconstructed. In addition, the unavoidable heavy computation burden and essential large operation frequency band can be effectively mitigated. The simulated experiments with measured radiation field data verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

RESUMO

Aerobic oxidative desulfurization (AODS) promises a sustainable alternative technology for diesel desulfurization, which necessitates the efficient aerobic oxidation of thiophenic sulfides under mild conditions to minimize energy input, yet being longstandingly plagued by the grand challenge in low-temperature activation of triplet oxygen. Here we synthesize vanadium nitride quantum dots on graphene to controllably create coordination-unsaturated edge/corner V sites for boosting the AODS reaction. The catalyst activates the reaction at 70 °C, and is two orders of magnitude more active than the best V-based catalysts. We demonstrate through computational studies that the low-coordinated edge/corner V sites can effectively activate oxygen and adsorb sulfides to lower the activation barrier, dramatically enhancing the activity. The catalyst achieves deep AODS of real diesel at 80 °C with negligible attenuation in successive reuses, which highlights its attractive industrial potential. These findings provide scientific and practical insights to develop high-performance catalysts for a sustainable AODS process.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) pretreatment on pregnancy in patients with poor ovarian response (POR). METHODS: A total of 330 POR patients who were pretreated with CoQ10 or CoQ10 combined with TEAS before their in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection and embryo transfer (IVF/ICSI-ET) cycles and who were not pretreated were selected and divided into CoQ10 group (group A, n = 110), CoQ10 + TEAS group (group B, n = 110) and control group (group C, n = 110). For patients with 2 or more transfer cycles, only the information of the first cycle was included. Ovarian function, response to gonadotropin (Gn) stimulation, and pregnancy outcomes of the three groups were compared in the IVF/ICSI-ET cycles. RESULTS: After pretreatment, basal FSH, total Gn dosage and duration were comparable among the three groups (all p-value > 0.05), basal E2 in group B decreased significantly compared with the control group (p = 0.022). Endometrial thickness on the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) day, antral follicle counts (AFC), the numbers of oocytes, metaphase II (MII) eggs and excellent embryos in the two pretreatment groups were significantly increased compared with group C (all p-value < 0.001), but the rates of MII oocytes, fertilization and excellent embryos had no apparent change. The endometrial thickness on the day of hCG, the numbers of MII eggs and excellent embryos in group B were higher than those in group A (p < 0.001; p = 0.020; p = 0.027; respectively). The embryo implantation rate (IR), clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) and live birth rate (LBR) in group B were significantly higher than those in group C (p = 0.022; p = 0.010; p = 0.019; respectively), but not significantly different from group A. CONCLUSION: CoQ10 alone or in combination with TEAS are effective methods for IVF/ICSI-ET adjuvant therapy, which can significantly improve ovarian reactivity, increase the numbers of retrieved eggs and superior embryos, and improve endometrial receptivity. Adjuvant TEAS on the basis of CoQ10 can significantly enhance pregnancy rates, but CoQ10 alone failed to present such an obvious effect.

RESUMO

The diagnostic value of microRNA-377 (miR-377) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and explored miR-377's potential mechanisms. We performed an qRT-PCR to assess serum miR-377 levels in ACS patients and coronary artery ligation rat models. The diagnostic value of miR-377 was evaluated by determining the ROC curve. An ELISA assay was conducted to detect the model rat endothelial damage markers von Willebrand factor (vWF) and heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP), and proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1ß. The serum miR-377 level was elevated in the ACS patients and significantly increased in the ACS rats. MiR-377 has a high diagnostic value in ACS patients, with a 0.844 ROC, 76.47% specificity, and 87.10% sensitivity. MiR-377 was positively correlated with the expressions of vWF, H-FABP, cTnI, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1ß. In ACS rats, reducing the expression of miR-377 significantly inhibited the increases in vWF, H-FABP, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1ß. An elevated miR-377 level can be used as a diagnostic marker in patients with ACS. A reduction of miR-377 may alleviate ACS by improving myocardial damage such as endothelial injury and the inflammatory response.

RESUMO

Background: Patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) with diabetes mellitus (DM) had higher mortality and poorer prognosis than those without DM. Previous studies had demonstrated the effectiveness of regional network systems (RNS) for reperfusion therapy in patients with STEMI. However, the differences in nursing care with RNS in subgroups of patients with DM with STEMI were unclear. Our study aimed to evaluate the validity of RNS in reperfusion therapy in patients with STEMI with or without DM. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled patients with STEMI who received reperfusion therapy at the chest pain center of the 920th Hospital in Kunming City, Yunnan Province from 2019 to 2021. Personal information and hospitalization information for patients with STEMI were collected through the chest pain center registration system. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to analyze factors associated with outcomes in patients with STEMI who received RNS. Wilcoxon rank-sum test and chi-squared test were used to analyze the differences in reperfusion therapy times and clinical outcomes between RNS and non-RNS in patients with STEMI with or without DM. Results: This study enrolled 1,054 patients with STEMI, including 148 patients with DM and 906 patients without DM. Logistic regression analysis indicated that DM was associated with patients with STEMI who received RNS [OR 1.590 95% CI (1.034-2.446), P = 0.035]. RNS may decrease the reperfusion therapy time in patients with STEMI and patients without DM with STEMI, including the first medical contact (FMC) to door, FMC to wire and FMC to catheterization laboratory activity (all P < 0.05). However, we found no significant difference in reperfusion therapy times with and without RNS in patients with DM (all P > 0.05). Conclusion: Regional network systems may decrease the reperfusion therapy time in patients without DM with STEMI, but no decrease was found in patients with DM with STEMI.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated health inequalities, with a potentially heightened mental health risk for Mainland Chinese in Canada, given the rising anti-Chinese discrimination, and barriers in assessing health services. In this context, this study aimed to assess non-pathological psychological distress towards COVID-19 and identify its sociodemographic risk factors among Mainland Chinese in Canada at the early stages of the pandemic. METHODS: A sample of 731 Mainland Chinese aged 16 or older completed an on-line survey to examine their attitudes, behavioural, and psychological responses towards COVID-19. Non-pathological psychological distress was assessed with a 7-item self-report scale to capture common emotional reactions towards COVID-19. RESULTS: A factor analysis revealed a single-factor structure of the 7-item COVID-19 psychological distress scale (Eigen λ = 3.79). A composite psychological distress index (PDI) score was calculated from these items and used as the outcome variable. Multivariate regression models identified age, financial satisfaction, health status, and perceived/experienced discrimination as significant predictors of psychological distress (ps ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Mainland Chinese in Canada who were over 25, in poor financial/health status, or with perceived/experienced discrimination were at a higher risk for COVID-19-related psychological distress. The health inequity across these factors would inform the services to mitigate mental health risk in minority groups.

RESUMO

The thermal radiation phenomenon is more crucial than other thermal transportation phenomena at elevated temperatures (>300 °C). Therefore, infrared radiation resistance and its performance on thermal conduction of nanofibrous aerogel with Titanium oxide (TiO2) filler have been investigated compared to control groups (silica nanofibrous aerogels with and without filler). Nanofibrous aerogel has been produced by electrospun silica nanofibers. Later, TiO2 opacifier and a non-opacifier filled materials were prepared by a solution homogenization method and then freeze-dried to obtain particle-filled nanofibrous aerogel. Moreover, the thermal radiation conductivity of the composite was calculated by numerical simulation, and the effect of the anti-infrared radiation of the TiO2 opacifier was obtained. The fascinating inhibited infrared radiation transmission performance (infrared transmittance ~67% at 3 µm) and excellent thermal insulation effect (thermal conductivity of 0.019 Wm-1K-1 at room temperature) and maximum compressive strengths (3.22 kPa) of silica nanofibrous aerogel with TiO2 opacifier were verified. Excellent thermal insulation, compression and thermal stability properties show its potential for practical application in industrial production. The successful synthesis of this material may shed light on the development of other insulative ceramic aerogels.

RESUMO

Cancer cells prefer glycolysis to support their proliferation. Our previous studies have shown that the long palate, lung, and nasal epithelial cell clone 1 (LPLUNC1) can upregulate prohibitin 1 (PHB1) expression to inhibit the proliferation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells. Given that PHB1 is an important regulator of cell energy metabolism, we explored whether and how LPLUNC1 regulated glucose glycolysis in NPC cells. LPLUNC1 or PHB1 overexpression decreased glycolysis and increased oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS)-related protein expression in NPC cells, promoting phosphorylated PHB1 nuclear translocation through 14-3-3σ. LPLUNC1 overexpression also increased p53 but decreased c-Myc expression in NPC cells, which were crucial for the decrease in glycolysis and increase in OXPHOS-related protein expression induced by LPLUNC1 overexpression. Finally, we found that treatment with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) reduced the viability and clonogenicity of NPC cells, decreased glycolysis, and increased OXPHOS-related protein expression by enhancing LPLUNC1 expression in NPC cells. Therefore, the LPLUNC1-PHB1-p53/c-Myc axis decreased glycolysis in NPC cells, and ATRA upregulated LPLUNC1 expression, ATRA maybe a promising drug for the treatment of NPC.

RESUMO

The current study examined the sociodemographic factors associated with perceived and experienced anti-Chinese discrimination and discrimination as a predictor of psychological distress and loneliness among Chinese Canadians. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in early 2021 with a sample of 899 Chinese Canadians (i.e., immigrants, citizens, visitors, and international students) during the Wave 2 of the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, anti-Chinese discrimination was generally associated with younger age and poor financial or health status. Christianity/Catholicism believers were less likely to report perceived discrimination, whereas being married/partnered and living with family reduced the incidences of experienced discrimination. Most importantly, hierarchical linear regression models showed that both perceived and experienced discrimination predicted higher psychological distress (ßs = 4.90-7.57, ps ≤ .001) and loneliness (ßs = .89-1.73, ps ≤ .003), before and after controlling for all related sociodemographic covariates. Additionally, older age, higher education, better financial or health status could all buffer psychological distress, whereas living with family or in a house and better financial or health status could mitigate feeling of loneliness. The results suggested that discrimination has a robust detrimental impact on mental health conditions among Chinese Canadians.

RESUMO

Humans are increasingly exposed to ubiquitous phthalates (PEs), e.g. butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), which are widely used plasticizers in polymer products. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of phytochemical quercetin (Que) on hepatotoxicity caused by the mixture of the 3 commonly used PEs (MPEs), and further to explore the underlying mechanism. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control group, MPEs group, and MPEs combined Que at Low-, Median-, and High-dose groups; rats in MPEs group were orally administered with 900 mg/kg/d MPEs, whereas rats in MPEs combined Que groups were simultaneously treated with 900 mg/kg/d MPEs and respectively 10, 30, and 90 mg/kg/d Que. The intervention last 30 days. Compared with control group, serum ALT, AST, LDH and AKP, and hepatic MDA, SOD, CAT and GPx were significantly increased, whereas, serum albumin and total protein were significantly decreased in MPEs group (P < 0.05); hepatic histopathological observation showed numerous inflammatory cells infiltration, hepatocyte ballooning degeneration, and numerous residual erythrocytes in the central vein in MPEs group. Western-blot analysis showed that hepatic Keap1 was downregulated, whereas Nrf2 and HO-1 were upregulated in MPEs group (P < 0.05). However, the alterations of these parameters were alleviated in MPEs combined Que at Median- and High-dose groups. The results indicated that MPEs-induced hepatic oxidative stress, and caused hepatic injuries; whereas, Que inhibited MPEs' hepatotoxicity, which might relate to Que's ability of quenching free radicals directly, and restored the regulation of Nrf2 signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Prohibitins (PHBs) are a class of highly evolutionarily conserved proteins that widely distribute in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. PHBs function in cell growth and proliferation or differentiation, regulating metabolism and signaling pathways. PHBs have different subcellular localization in eukaryotes, but they are mainly located in mitochondria. In the mitochondria, PHBs stabilize the structure of the mitochondrial membrane and regulate mitochondrial autophagy, mitochondrial dynamics, mitochondrial biogenesis and quality control, and mitochondrial unfolded protein response. PHBs has shown to be associated with many diseases, such as mitochondria diseases, cancers, infectious diseases, and so on. Some molecule targets of PHBs can interfere with the occurrence and development of diseases. Therefore, this review clarifies the functions of PHBs in mitochondria, and provides a summary of the potential values in clinics.
