In order to study changes in benthic diatom communities and their relationships with environmental factors during different hydrological periods, 32 sites were sampled in the main stream of the Three Gorges Reservoir during the non-storage period (July 2015 to September 2015) and the storage period (December 2015 to March 2016). Results showed that there were significant differences in water temperature (WT), underwater light intensity (PAR), pH, conductivity (Spc), dissolved oxygen (DO), redox potential (ORP), turbidity (Tur), transparency (SD), flow rate (v), and permanganate index between the storage and non-storage periods. Ninety-six species of benthic diatoms, belonging to 28 genera, were identified during the two hydrological periods. Thirteen dominant species and three dominant species were identified during the non-storage period and the storage period, respectively, suggesting that some differences existed in the composition and distribution of dominant species between the two periods. However, Melosira varians, an α-polluting and eutrophic species, was dominant during both of the hydrological periods. Redundancy analysis (RDA) found that pH, flow rate, and orthophosphate (PO43--P) were the main environmental factors affecting the composition of benthic diatom communities, and a significant difference was found between up- and down-stream areas during the non-storage period. In comparison, water temperature, turbidity, permanganate index, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were the main environmental factors influencing the patterns of benthic diatoms communities, for which an insignificant difference was observed between up- and down-stream areas during the storage period. These results suggest that water storage in the Three Gorges Reservoir has an important impact on the composition of benthic diatom communities, and that this results in a change in community structure.

In order to explore the composition of epiphytic algae and its related environmental factors, 12 sampling sites in the natural reaches and the backwater reaches (including perennial backwater sections and fluctuating backwater sections) were investigated among tributaries of the Caotang River, the Meixi River, and the Daxi River in the Fengjie district of the Chongqing section of the Three Gorges Reservoir under different hydrological regimes (i.e., storage and non-storage periods). Results showed that 103 species of epilithic algae belonging to 45 genera and 4 families are found in the 3 tributaries. This included 67 species belonging to 34 genus in the natural sections and 82 species (64 species in perennial backwater sections and 41 species in fluctuating backwater sections) belonging to 34 genera in the backwater sections. During the storage period, the dominant species in the natural sections were Melosira varians, Cocconeis placentula, Diatoma vulgure, Gyrosigma scalproides, and Oscillatoria tenuis, while the dominant species in the backwater sections were M. varians, Cymbella affinis,D. vulgure, Eucapsis alpina, and M. granulata. During the non-storage period, the dominant species in the natural sections were M. varians, C. affinis, and C. placentula, whereas the dominant species in the backwater sections were O. princeps, O. rupicola,O. formosa, Synedra acus, Ulothrix sp., Merismopedia elegans, and O. tenuis. These results suggested that the compositions of dominant species showed significant differences during the non-storage period, while little difference was found during the storage period. In addition, the dominant species did not show a significant change in the natural sections, but a marked difference was observed in the backwater sections. Similar dominant species were observed in both perennial and fluctuating backwater sections during the non-storage period, but significantly different dominant species were found during the storage period. Redundancy analysis suggested that the composition of epilithic algae was influenced by different environmental factors, such as temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Indeed, changes in the cell densities of dominant algae at the different sites were mainly affected by temperature and the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. These results suggest that the different hydrological regimes had an important role not only on the reservoir water environment, but also the dynamics of epilithic algal communities.

BACKGROUND: Tacrolimus is used off-label in the treatment of Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) in children, with limited evidence-based data. Based on clinical empirical experience and mechanism of action, tacrolimus might be promoted as treatment for childhood HSPN. The objectives of this pilot study were to assess its effectiveness and safety, and to explore the potential impact of CYP3A5 genotype. METHODS: Children with HSPN receiving tacrolimus as empirical treatment were included in this prospective, observational study. Effectiveness was classified as complete remission, partial remission or non-response. General safety data analyses during and after study drug exposure included adverse events, reasons for discontinuation, deaths, laboratory data and vital signs. Trough concentration was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Pharmacogenetic analysis was performed on the CYP3A5 gene. RESULTS: A total of 20 patients with a mean age of 7.5 (SD 2.1) years participated in the whole process of the study. Twelve patients reached complete remission and eight patients reached partial remission at the end of 6-month treatment. No patients discontinued tacrolimus treatment due to adverse events, and no drug-related adverse events were shown to have a causal association with tacrolimus therapy. Dose-adjusted trough concentration was significantly higher in children with CYP3A5*1 allele as compared with patients with CYP3A5*3/*3 genotype (170.7±100.9 vs 79.8±47.4 (ng/mL)/(mg/kg)). CONCLUSION: This pilot study showed that tacrolimus might be an effective and well-tolerated drug for the treatment of HSPN in children. CYP3A5 polymorphism had a significant impact on tacrolimus concentration.

The aim of this paper was to study the effect of total flavones of Clematis filamentosa Dunn(TFCD) post-conditioning against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) and the role of PI3K/Akt-eNOS signaling pathway. Forty male SD rats were divided randomly into five groups: Sham group, model group (I/R), TFCD post-conditioning group (TFCD), TFCD post-condition-ing+LY294002 (a PI3K/Akt signaling pathway inhibitor) group (TFCD+LY), and LY294002 group (LY). At the end of reperfusion, hemodynamic parameters were recorded, morphology changes of myocardial tissue were evaluated by using HE staining, and myocardial infarct size were observed, blood samples were obtained to determine plasma activation of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) nitric oxide (NO), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), maleic dialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). The expressions of Akt, p-Akt, eNOS and p-eNOS proteins were assessed by using Western blot, and eNOS and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA was measured by RT-PCR. The results showed that, compared with the model group, TFCD post-conditioning remarkably improved hemodynamics function and myocardial structure, reduced myocardial infarct size and enhanced the contents of NO, eNOS, SOD and GSH-Px, and decreased the contents of LDH, CK and MDA, increased the levels of phosphorylation of Akt and eNOS protein expression, eNOS and iNOS mRNA expression significantly(P<0.05 or P<0.01). These effects were inhibited by LY294002, a blocker of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. The above experiments indicated that TFCD post-conditioning could significantly reduce MIRI in rats, the mechanism of which may be associated with increasing antioxidation, scavenging oxygen free radicals, regulating NO generation and activating PI3K/Akt-eNOS signaling pathway.

Physalin E is a naturally occurring seco-steroid isolated from the stems and aerial parts of Physalis angulata L. (Solanaceae). This study was aimed to explore the anti-inflammatory effects of physalin E on RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and the potential underlying mechanisms. The results showed that physalin E significantly inhibited LPS-induced tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression and secretion in a dose-dependent manner. Unlike dexamethasone, these effects could not be blocked by miferstone (RU486). Meanwhile, physalin E reduced the degradation of I-kappa B protein in the cytoplasm and downregulated the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) p65 protein in the nuclear, which resulted in the inhibition of the NF-κB nuclear translocation. In conclusion, physalin E exerts its anti-inflammatory activities in LPS-induced macrophages. Physalin E can inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines by targeting the NF-κB signaling pathway.

In the present, using the characteristics of paddy rice at different phenophase to identify it by remote sensing images is an efficient way in the information extraction. According to the remarkably properties of paddy rice different from other vegetation, which the surface of paddy fields is with a large number of water in the early stage, NDWI (normalized difference water index) which is used to extract water information can reasonably be applied in the extraction of paddy rice at the early stage of the growth. And using NDWI ratio of two phenophase can expand the difference between paddy rice and other surface features, which is an important part for the extraction of paddy rice with high accuracy. Then using the variation of NDVI (normalized differential vegetation index) in different phenophase can further enhance accuracy of paddy rice information extraction. This study finds that making full advantage of the particularity of paddy rice in different phenophase and combining two indices (NDWI and NDVI) associated with paddy rice can establish a reasonable, accurate and effective extraction model of paddy rice. This is also the main way to improve the accuracy of paddy rice extraction. The present paper takes Lai'an in Anhui Province as the research area, and rice as the research object. It constructs the extraction model of paddy rice information using NDVI and NDWI between tillering stage and heading stage. Then the model was applied to GF1-WFV remote sensing image on July 12, 2013 and August 30, 2013. And it effectively extracted out of paddy rice distribution in Lai'an and carried on the mapping. At last, the result of extraction was verified and evaluated combined with field investigation data in the study area. The result shows that using the extraction model can quickly and accurately obtain the distribution of rice information, and it has the very good universality.

BACKGROUND: Xylanases have attracted much attention because of their potential applications. Unfortunately, the commercialization of xylanases is limited by their low catalytic activities. The aim of this study was to improve the activity of a xylanase by optimization of the expression conditions and to investigate its characterization. RESULTS: The activity of recombinant AuXyn11A (reAuXyn11A), a family 11 xylanase from Aspergillus usamii E001 expressed in Pichia pastoris GS115, reached 912.6 U mL⁻¹ under the optimized conditions, which was 2.14 times as high as that expressed using the standard protocol. After the endogenous 18-aa propeptide had been processed in P. pastoris, reAuXyn11A (188-aa mature peptide) was secreted and purified with a specific activity of 22 714 U mg⁻¹. It displayed maximum activity at pH 5 and 50 °C and was stable in the pH range 4-8 and at a temperature of 45 °C or below. Its activity was not significantly affected by most metal ions and EDTA. Xylooligosaccharides ranging from xylobiose (X2) to xylohexaose (X6) were produced from insoluble corncob xylan by reAuXyn11A. CONCLUSION: Its high specific activity and good enzymatic properties suggest that reAuXyn11A is a potential candidate for applications in industrial processes.

Evaluation of the chemical composition and antihyperglycemic and antioxidant activity of five wild edible mushrooms (Clitocybe maxima, Catathelasma ventricosum, Stropharia rugoso-annulata, Craterellus cornucopioides and Laccaria amethystea) from Southwest China. The chemical composition assay includes proximate analysis (moisture, ash, crude protein, crude fat, total carbohydrates and total energy), bioactive compounds analysis (total phenolic, flavonoid, ascorbic acid, ergosterol, tocopherol), fatty acid analysis, amino acid analysis, phenolic compounds analysis and mineral analysis of these mushrooms. Furthermore, assays of α-glucosidase inhibitory and α-amylase inhibitory activity were used for evaluating antihyperglycemic activity of the mushrooms, and assays of reducing power, chelating effect on ferrous ions, scavenging effect on hydroxyl free radicals and 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity were used for evaluating antioxidant activity of the mushrooms. Based on the results, ethanolic and aqueous extract of these mushroom all showed antihyperglycemic and antioxidant potential. In particular, the aqueous extract of C. ventricosum revealed the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (EC50 value 2.74 µg/mL), DPPH radical scavenging activity (EC50 value 2.86 mg/mL) and reducing power (EC50 value 0.96 mg/mL), while the aqueous extract of L. amethystea showed the highest α-amylase inhibitory activity (EC50 value 4.37 µg/mL) and metal chelating activity (EC50 value 2.13 mg/mL).

miR393, which is encoded by MIR393a and MIR393b in Arabidopsis, post-transcriptionally regulates mRNAs for the F-box auxin receptors TIR1 (Transport Inhibitor Response Protein 1), AFB1 (Auxin Signaling F-box Protein 1), AFB2 and AFB3. However, biological functions of the miR393-TIR1/AFBs module in auxin response and plant development is not fully understood. In the study herein, we demonstrate that miR393 accumulated in response to exogenous IAA treatment, and its induction was due to enhanced MIR393b transcription but not MIR393a. Overexpression of a miR393-resistant form of TIR1 (mTIR1) enhanced auxin sensitivity and led to pleiotropic effects on plant development including inhibition of primary root growth, overproduction of lateral roots, altered leave phenotype and delayed flowering. Furthermore, miR393 level was increased in 35S:mTIR1 plant, suggesting that TIR1 promoted the expression of miR393 by a feedback loop. The interaction between miR393 and its target indicates a fine adjustment to the roles of the miR393-TIR1 module, which is required for auxin responses in plant development.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis (EM) is a benign gynecologic disease predominantly found in women of reproductive age. However, its pathogenesis is still poorly understood. Our experiment was designed to establish a stable and reliable cultural environment for coculture of endometrium and peritoneum, so as to observe the adhesion/invasion ability of endometrium from patients with or without EM. METHODS: Endometria of secretory phase and peritoneum were sampled from 6 women with endometriois during laparoscopy. Six with ovarian teratoma or simple ovarian cyst were taken as control. We cocultured endometrium and peritoneum into four groups (endometrium from EM cultured with peritoneum from EM, endometrium from control cultured with peritoneum from control, endometrium from EM cultured with peritoneum from non-EM and the endometrium from control cultured with peritoneum from EM) to observe the adhesion/invasion process in gas-liquid surface culture and in-medium culture. Specimens were collected at 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, 6 days and 7 days for histology, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemical analysis on cytokeratin 8 (CK8) and CD10. RESULTS: The gas-liquid surface culture was superior to in-medium culture for the maintenance of tissue morphology and survival of endometrium. CK8 immunoflurescence demonstrated no remarkable difference in adhesion process between patients with and without EM. CD10 immunochemistry manifested frequent invasion of endometrial stromal cells from EM patients into peritoneum of up to 3 days culture, while the endometriotic cells from non-EM patients did not invade into peritoneum. CONCLUSIONS: Gas-liquid surface culture is a suitable model for observing the early events in EM lesion formation. Endometrium from patients with EM showed increased invasion capacity during coculture, which might help to explain the etiology of endometriosis.

The study examined the relationship of blood pressure (BP) with anthropometric indices, including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), conicity index (CI), waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference (HC). The sample consisted of 731 females and 911 males aged 20-60 years randomly recruited from Shanxi Province of PR China. There was an increasing trend of systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and the five anthropometric indices in successively older age groups. Except for female HC, all the other anthropometric indices were significantly correlated with BPS. Among them, WC and HC exhibited the highest correlations in female (0.38-0.42) and in male (0.36-0.37), respectively. The result indicates that HC is not protective for metabolic risk factors in males. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on all the five anthropometric indices and four major principal components (PCs) were obtained to explain greater variances (R(2) = 0.173-0.212) in BPS than did anyone of five anthropometric indices (R(2) = 0.0001-0.176). The same analyses were conducted on any two, three, and four indices of the five anthropometric ones, in order to get the smaller and optimal sets of indices to estimate BPs. Our results suggest that BMI, WC, and HC are the smallest set of anthropometric indices to optimally estimate BP for the males, and WC and BMI for the females.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-based method for determining the contents of psoralene, bergapten and apigenin in Ficus hirta Vahl. METHODS: A Hypersil C18 column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) was used with the mobile phase of methanol-water (60:40), flow rate of 1.0 ml/min, detection wavelength of 268.7 nm and column temperature of 30 degrees celsius. RESULTS: The calibration curve was linear within the range of 10.0-30.0 µg/ml for psoralene (r=0.9998), 15.0-45.0 µg/ml for bergapten (r=0.9998) and 5.0-15.0 µg/ml for apigenin (r=0.9992). The average recovery of psoralene was 99.7% (RSD=1.99%), that of bergapten was 99.9% (RSD=1.71%) and that of apigenin was 100.3% (RSD=1.78%). CONCLUSION: The method is simple, economic and accurate with good reproducibility for the contents of psoralene, bergapten and apigenin.

The Forkhead transcription factor O 1 (FoxO1) gene plays an important role in the integration of hormone-activated signaling pathways with the complex transcriptional cascade that promotes clonal cell line differentiation. However, tissue expression of porcine FoxO1 and its function during porcine preadipocyte differentiation remained poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated tissue expressions of FoxO1 in pig by real time quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blotting, and explored its role in porcine preadipocytes differentiation by RNA interference technique and qRT-PCR. FoxO1 gene expressions were highly in subcutaneous adipose and visceral adipose tissues, and higher in piglets than those in adults (P < 0.05). We showed that expression of endogenous FoxO1 in preadipocytes transfected with pBS/U6-siFoxO1-1748 expression vector was inhibited efficiently. After reducing expression of FoxO1, glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) activity and triglyceride (TG) content increased from day 1 to 9, and the time-course expressions of several key adipogenic genes mRNA, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma on day 3, 5, and 7, adipocyte fatty acid binding protein on day 1, 3, and 5, and sirtuin1 on day 1, 3, and 5, were increased significantly (P < 0.05). Lipoprotein lipase was unrelevant to FoxO1. By using insulin-like growth factor-I treating, expression of FoxO1 reduced at day 3 and 5 (P < 0.05), and significant differentiation of porcine preadipocyte with increasing number of filled-lipid cell and size of lipid droplets, GPDH activity and TG content were promoted. These results suggested that porcine FoxO1 gene took part in the regulation of adipose and was a negative transcription regulation factor in preadipocyte differentiation.

Total RNA was extracted from soleus muscle, gastrocnemius muscle and extensor digitorum longus in hind leg of the 6-month-old male Bamei, Landrace, and the crossbred pigs (LandracexBamei). The primers of pig FoxO1 were designed and synthesized according to its homologous sequences of human, chimpanzee and rat. The optimal reaction condition and system of PCR was sieved to clone pig FoxO1 gene. Subsequently, the differential expression of FoxO1 mRNA was investigated in different types of skeletal muscle from Bamei, Landrace, and the crossbred pigs by SQ RT-PCR. The expression level of beta-actin was determined as a loading control. The results showed that the expression level of FoxO1 was different in various economic pig breeds and skeletal muscle types. The expression of FoxO1 in skeletal muscle of Bamei and the crossbred pigs was significantly higher than that of Landrace (Plt;0.01). Moreover, the expression of FoxO1 was lowest in soleus muscle, which mainly contains typemuscle fiber, and most abundant in extensor digitorum longus, which mainly contains typeb muscle fiber. This suggests that FoxO1 expression level has the negative correlation with the con-tent of typemuscle fiber. Skeletal muscle development of different economic types of pig breeds may be closely related to the regulation of FoxO1 gene.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the method of two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis and obtain high resolution 2D images from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with neurocysticercosis. METHODS: CSF samples were collected from four patients diagnosed as neurocysticercosis clinically and by ELISA, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and from four healthy subjects without neurological disorders. The CSF samples were precipitated with cold acetone, then pooled by equal amount as patients and controls. The internal standard comprised equal amounts of proteins extracted from both groups. Internal standard, and proteins from the two groups were labeled prior to electrophoresis with spectrally resolvable fluorescent dyes, cyanein dye2 (Cy2), Cy3 and Cy5. Sodium dodecylsulfonate polyacrylamide gel chromatography (SDS-PAGE) and two-dimensional differential in-gel electrophoresis (2-D DIGE) of labeled samples were then run. The differential expressed proteins showed in the images of SDS-PAGE and 2-D DIGE gels scanned with 488 nm, 532 nm and 633 nm wavelength laser were analyzed by ImageQuant and DeCyde 5.0 respectively. Spot detection and quantification was performed for the differential in-gel analysis (DIA) module of DeCyder. Biological variation analysis (BVA) module of DeCyder was matched gel 1 and gel 2 images to provide data on differential protein expression levels between the two groups. RESULTS: The ImageQuant result displayed that the CSF protein was compatible with the dye, and the difference of protein amount was revealed by the difference of fluorescence intensity. DIA indicated that there were 896 and 894 protein dots on gel 1 and gel 2 respectively, and 90% of them were matched each other. BVA showed that there were 55 protein spots with different expressional level between neurocysticercosis and control groups. Protein spots with two-fold increase or decrease were 47 and 8 respectively in neurocysticercosis patients compared with healthy controls. CONCLUSION: The method of 2-D DIGE has been established with high-resolution images for the examination of cerebrospinal fluid, providing a foundation for further study of neurocysticercosis comparative proteomics.

Sirt1, a NAD(+)-dependent histone deacetylase, may regulate senescence, metabolism, and apoptosis. In this study, primary pig preadipocytes were cultured in DMEM/F12 medium containing 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) with or without reagents affecting Sirt1 activity. The adipocyte differentiation process was visualized by light microscopy after Oil red O staining. Proliferation and differentiation of preadipocytes was measured using methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and Oil red O extraction. Expression of Sirt1, FoxO1, and adipocyte specific genes was detected with semi-quantitive RT-PCR. The results showed that Sirt1 mRNA was widely expressed in various pig tissues from different developmental stages. Sirt1 mRNA was expressed throughout the entire differentiation process of pig preadipocytes. Resveratrol significantly increased Sirt1 mRNA expression, but decreased the expression of FoxO1 and adipocyte marker gene PPARgamma2. Resveratrol significantly inhibited pig preadipocyte proliferation and differentiation. Nicotinamide decreased the expression of Sirt1 mRNA, but increased the expression of FoxO1 and adipocyte specific genes. Nicotinamide greatly stimulated the proliferation and differentiation of pig preadipocytes. In conclusion, these results indicate that Sirt1 may modulate the proliferation and differentiation of pig preadipocytes. Sirt1 may down-regulate pig preadipocytes proliferation and differentiation through repression of adipocyte genes or FoxO1.

PURPOSE: To investigate the role of alpha2-HS glycoprotein (AHSG) gene on bone mineral density (BMD) variation. METHODS: A total of 665 subjects from 157 Caucasian nuclear families were genotyped at the AHSG NlaIII, SacI sites. The association and linkage between the single SNP markers and haplotypes constructed by two markers in this gene and BMDs at the spine and hip were determined by using quantitative transmission disequilibrium test (QTDT). RESULTS: Significant within-family associations were obtained for spine BMD at both of studied markers (P = 0.036 and 0.005 at the NlaIII and SacI sites, respectively). Significant (P = 0.008 at the NlaIII locus) (P = 0.004 at the SacI locus) total associations at spine BMD were detected. Haplotype analyses confirmed those within-family and total association. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest the polymorphisms in the AHSG gene may have effects on BMD variation in Caucasian population.

Peak bone mineral density (PBMD) is an important determinant of osteoporotic fracture and a precondition for correct diagnosis of osteoporosis. The objective of this study was to establish the reference data of PBMD at the lumber spine and hip in Southern Chinese males. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the lumbar spine and hip (femoral neck, trochanter, intertrochanter, and total) in 1155 Chinese men aged 15-39 years, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). We utilized a fit curve method to determine the best age range over which to calculate PBMD. Our results indicated that the PBMD was observed at the age range of 18-25 years at the various sites. The mean value and standard deviation of PBMD was 0.753 +/- 0.117, 1.156 +/- 0.148, 0.896 +/- 0.120, 0.989 +/- 0.122, and 0.980 +/- 0.116 g/cm2 at the trochanter, intertrochanter, femoral neck, total hip, and spine, respectively. When the present PBMD reference was compared with the documented PBMD reference of males from other regions of China, we found great difference in standardized PBMD between Changsha males and those from other regions of China. The PBMD for Chinese males in Changsha at the various sites were 3.19%-11.33% lower than that for American Caucasian males. In conclusion, the PBMD at the spine and hip may be used as normal reference data for Southern Chinese males in Changsha instead of documented PBMD from other regions of China and the manufacturer's reference data.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity is a worldwide problem, and excess trunk fat mass (FM(trunk)) has been associated with an increased risk of diseases. The early measurement of FM(trunk) has potential importance to evaluate trunk obesity. We sought to evaluate the correlation and predication of FM(trunk) with five anthropometric indices in Chinese females. METHODS AND RESULTS: A sample of 850 China females aged 20-40 years were recruited and divided into four age groups with a 5-year range in each group. Five anthropometric indices were measured or calculated. FM(trunk) in kg was measured using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanner. Principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple regression analysis were performed to develop prediction equations. There was an increasing trend of FM(trunk) and five anthropometric indices in successively older age groups. Four formed principal components (PCs) interpreted over 99% of the total variation of five relative anthropometric indices in all age groups. Regression analyses showed that four PCs combined explained a greater variance (R(2)=45.2-81.6%) in FM(trunk) than did each of the five indices alone (R(2)=2.4-72.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that there is an increasing trend of FM(trunk) and five anthropometric indices with aging; that age obviously influences the relationship of FM(trunk) and the anthropometric indices studied; and that the accuracy of predicting the FM(trunk) using five anthropometric indices combined is greater than using the five indices alone.
