RESUMO

Residues and distribution of neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) in soil-water-sediment systems of the urban and rural areas of Guangzhou, South China were investigated. A total of 104 soil samples from 7 different functional zones and 29 water/sediment samples from creeks were collected. The results showed that at least one neonicotinoid insecticide was detected in all samples. The summed levels of five target neonicotinoids (∑5neonics) were in the range of 0.003-229 ng/g dw for soil samples, 7.94-636 ng/L for water samples, and 0.017-31.3 ng/g dw for sediment samples, with a geometric mean of 0.59 ng/g dw, 153 ng/L and 1.11 ng/g dw, respectively. Soils from agricultural areas contained the highest residual NEOs, followed by commercial, traffic, residential, industrial, educational zones and parks. Among the seven different functional zones studied, imidacloprid was the most dominant NEO in the agricultural areas and commercial zones, whereas acetamiprid was dominant in the other five functional zones with different land-use types. Thiamethoxam and acetamiprid were the main NEOs in water and sediment samples collected from 29 creeks. The pollution of NEOs in soils, water and sediments from rural areas was higher than that in the counterparts from urban areas. Residual concentration of NEOs detected in soils, water and sediments showed significant correlations with each other. The distribution of NEOs in soil-water-sediment systems indicated that NEOs tended to concentrate in water, followed by sediments and soils, especially in urban areas. An evaluation of the exposure to the current level of the ∑5NEOs in Guangzhou suggests a significant risk for aquatic and soil organisms, particularly under chronic exposures. The results of the present study offer valuable data to better understand the contamination and ecological risks of neonicotinoid insecticides in the rapidly developing urbanized region of South China.

We report the synthesis, ab initio calculations, magnetic and optical characterization of a DyIII-based dimeric compound named DyAZO. The dimers self-organize into a supramolecular chain decorated with photo-isomerizable azobenzene ligands. DyAZO displays single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. However, ab initio calculations highlight a quite strong admixture of MJ states of the 6H15/2 level of DyIII ions, the presence of low-lying excited MJ states and antiferromagnetic Dy-Dy dipolar coupling. This favors zero-field fast tunneling. Accordingly the Dy-doped analogue YDyAZO (5.5% Dy doping) displays enhanced magnetic relaxation with a hysteresis that is observed at 0.5 K. The influence of the cis- to trans-isomerization of the decorating azobenzene ligand on magnetic properties has been tested for both solid samples and solutions of DyAZO and YDyAZO. This provides hints for the synthesis of future Dy-based photo-isomerizable molecules.

Little information is available about the occurrence of neonicotinoid insecticides in surface water and sediment of the metropolitan regions around the rivers in China. Here we investigate the residual level of neonicotinoids in the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River. At least one or two neonicotinoids was detected in each surface water and sediment, and the total amount of neonicotinoids (∑5neonics) in surface water ranged from 92.6 to 321 ng/L with a geometric mean (GM) of 174 ng/L. Imidacloprid, thiamethoxam and acetamiprid were three frequently detected neonicotinoids (100%) from surface water. As for the sediment, total concentration was varied between 0.40 and 2.59 ng/g dw with a GM of 1.12 ng/g dw, and acetamiprid and thiacloprid were the common sediment neonicotinoids. Western and Front river-route of the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River suffered a higher neonicotinoids contamination than the Rear river-route, resulting from more effluents of WWTPs receiving, and intensive commercial and human activities. Level of residual neonicotinoids in surface water was significantly correlated with the water quality (p < 0.01), especially items of pH, DO and ORP, and nitrogen and phosphorus contaminants. Compared with reports about residual neonicotinoids in water and sediment previously, the metropolitan regions of the Guangzhou could be confronted with a moderate contamination and showed serious ecological threats (even heavier than the Pearl Rivers). Our results will provide valuable data for understanding of neonicotinoids contamination in the Pearl River Delta and be helpful for further assessing environmental risk of neonicotinoids.

An efficient electron transport layer (ETL) between the perovskite absorber and the cathode plays a crucial role in obtaining high-performance planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we incorporate 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) in the commonly used tin oxide (SnO2) ETL, and it successfully improves the power conversation efficiency (PCE) and suppresses the hysteresis of the PSCs: the PCE is increased from 19.17% to 20.92%, and the hysteresis is largely reduced to be almost negligible. The origin of the enhancement is due to the improved electron mobility and optimized work function of the ETL, together with the reduced traps in the perovskite film. In addition, O2 plasma is employed to treat the surface of the TFE-incorporated SnO2 film, and the PCE is further increased to 21.68%. The concept here of incorporating organic small molecules in the ETL provides a strategy for enhancing the performance of the planar PSCs.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence techniques and future advanced robot systems sparks emergent demand on the accurate perception and understanding of the external environments via visual sensing systems that can co-locate the self-adaptive detecting, processing, and memorizing of optical signals. In this contribution, a simple indium-tin oxide/Nb-doped SrTiO3 (ITO/Nb:SrTiO3) heterojunction artificial optoelectronic synapse is proposed and demonstrated. Through the light and electric field co-modulation of the Schottky barrier profile at the ITO/Nb:SrTiO3 interface, the oxide heterojunction device can respond to the entire visible light region in a neuromorphic manner, allowing synaptic paired-pulse facilitation, short/long-term memory, and "learning-experience" behavior for optical information manipulation. More importantly, the photoplasticity of the artificial synapse has been modulated by heterosynaptic means with a sub-1 V external voltage, not only enabling an optoelectronic analog of the mechanical aperture device showing adaptive and stable optical perception capability under different illuminating conditions but also making the artificial synapse suitable for the mimicry of interest-modulated human visual memories.

Occurrence and distribution of five neonicotinoids (NEOs) in surface water and sediment were studied in the Pearl Rivers, including three trunk streams, Dongjiang, Beijiang, Xijiang River (DR, BR and XR), South China. At least one neonicotinoid was detected in surface water and sediment of the Pearl Rivers, with imidacloprid (IMI) and thiamethoxam (THM) being the frequently detected NEOs. Total amount of NEOs (∑5neonics) in surface water and sediment ranged from 24.0 to 322 ng/L, and from 0.11 to 11.6 ng/g dw, respectively. Moreover, the order of contamination level of NEOs in the Pearl Rivers was as follows: XR > DR > BR for surface water, and BR > DR > XR for sediment. Local agricultural activities and effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) could be major sources of NEOs in the Pearl Rivers. Solubilization and dilution of NEOs between surface water and sediment during different seasons (spring and summer) could be attributed to rainfall intensities or climate of the Pearl River Delta. An ecological risk assessment of the exposure to current environmental concentration of imidacloprid and ∑5NEOs suggests a threat to sensitive non-target invertebrates, including aquatic invertebrates. Results would provide a better understanding of NEOs contamination in the Pearl Rivers, as well as being a reliable dataset for decision-making in contamination control and environmental protection.

The residue levels and composition profiles of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in water and sediment samples were investigated in eight urban lakes of Guangzhou, China. A total of 23 water and 16 sediment samples were collected. Results showed that all target PAEs were detected with dimethyl phthalate and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate as the most abundant compounds. The total concentrations of PAEs from different urban lakes were in the range of 273-1173 ng/L for water and 16.5-242 ng/g for sediments, with the geometric mean of 515 ng/L and 75.0 ng/g, respectively. Zhongshan Park Lake and Liwan Lake were the most highly contaminated with PAEs in water and in sediment, respectively. The spatial distribution of PAEs exhibited that distribution coefficients of PAEs between sediment and water are consistent with hydrophilicity of PAEs, and pollution levels and characteristics of PAEs in different lakes had a close relationship with the geographical location of the lake, industrial and commercial types, population density, and the association between the lake and the Pearl River. According to Pearson correlation analysis, PAEs would be derived from similar or identical sources. Risk assessment suggested that the exposure of PAEs in Guangzhou has a moderate toxicity at the current level.

The explosive increase in digital communications in the Big Data and internet of Things era spurs the development of universal memory that can run at high speed with high-density and nonvolatile storage capabilities, as well as demonstrating superior mechanical flexibility for wearable applications. Among various candidates for the next-generation information storage technology, resistive switching memories distinguish themselves with low power consumption, excellent downscaling potential, easy 3D stacking, and high CMOS compatibility, fulfilling key requirements for high-performance data storage. Employing organic and hybrid switching media in addition allows light weight and flexible integration of molecules with tunable device performance via molecular design-cum-synthesis strategy. In this review, we present a timely and comprehensive review of the recent advances in organic and hybrid resistive switching materials and devices, with particular attention on their design principles for electronic property tuning and flexible device performance. The current challenges posed with development of organic and hybrid resistive switching materials and flexible memory devices, together with their future perspectives, are also discussed.

Although treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors provides promising benefit for patients with cancer, optimal use is encumbered by high resistance rates and requires a thorough understanding of resistance mechanisms. We observed that tumors treated with PD-1/PD-L1 blocking antibodies develop resistance through the upregulation of CD38, which is induced by all-trans retinoic acid and IFNß in the tumor microenvironment. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that CD38 inhibits CD8+ T-cell function via adenosine receptor signaling and that CD38 or adenosine receptor blockade are effective strategies to overcome the resistance. Large data sets of human tumors reveal expression of CD38 in a subset of tumors with high levels of basal or treatment-induced T-cell infiltration, where immune checkpoint therapies are thought to be most effective. These findings provide a novel mechanism of acquired resistance to immune checkpoint therapy and an opportunity to expand their efficacy in cancer treatment.Significance: CD38 is a major mechanism of acquired resistance to PD-1/PD-L1 blockade, causing CD8+ T-cell suppression. Coinhibition of CD38 and PD-L1 improves antitumor immune response. Biomarker assessment in patient cohorts suggests that a combination strategy is applicable to a large percentage of patients in whom PD-1/PD-L1 blockade is currently indicated. Graphdiyne (GDY) is an ordered two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope comprising sp- and sp2-hybridized carbon atoms with high degrees of π-conjugation, which features a natural band gap and superior electric properties. However, the synthesis of one- or few-layer GDY remains challenging because of the free rotation around alkyne-aryl single bonds and the lack of thickness control. We report the facile synthesis of an ultrathin single-crystalline GDY film on graphene through a solution-phase van der Waals epitaxial strategy. The weak admolecule-substrate interaction at the heterojunction drastically relaxes the large lattice mismatch between GDY and graphene. It allows the fast in-plane coupling of admolecules and slow out-of-plane growth toward the formation of an incommensurately stacked heterostructure, which is composed of single-layer graphene and few-layer ABC-stacked GDY, as directly observed by electron microscopy and identified from Raman fingerprints. This study provides a general route not only to the bottom-up synthesis of intriguing 2D acetylenic carbon allotropes but also to the device fabrication for the direct measurement of their intrinsic electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties.

This work designed an ITO/Ag/n-Si Schottky photodetector with broad wavelength detection and low dark current. The introduction of Ag interfacial layer and post rapid thermal annealing dramatically increase the barrier height of ITO/n-Si Schottky diode by 0.32 eV, leading to the 2300 × reduction of dark current. A well-behaved ITO/Ag (8 nm)/n-Si Schottky diode with a high rectification ratio ( ± 1 V) of 4 × 105 and low dark current (-1 V) of 9.2 nA was achieved. Such low dark current device spontaneously provides high sensitivity for visible/near infrared wavelength detection, in which substantial responsivity for wavelengths from 360 to 1650 nm was realized through both inter-band and internal photoemission. The design here provides an encouraging strategy for monolithically integrated pure Si photodetectors operating at long wavelength up to 1650 nm.

Memristive devices are able to store and process information, which offers several key advantages over the transistor-based architectures. However, most of the two-terminal memristive devices have fixed functions once made and cannot be reconfigured for other situations. Here, we propose and demonstrate a memristive device "memlogic" (memory logic) as a nonvolatile switch of logic operations integrated with memory function in a single light-gated memristor. Based on nonvolatile light-modulated memristive switching behavior, a single memlogic cell is able to achieve optical and electrical mixed basic Boolean logic of reconfigurable "AND", "OR", and "NOT" operations. Furthermore, the single memlogic cell is also capable of functioning as an optical adder and digital-to-analog converter. All the memlogic outputs are memristive for in situ data storage due to the nonvolatile resistive switching and persistent photoconductivity effects. Thus, as a memdevice, the memlogic has potential for not only simplifying the programmable logic circuits but also building memristive multifunctional optoelectronics.

Nanoscale manipulation of materials' physicochemical properties offers distinguished possibility to the development of novel electronic devices with ultrasmall dimension, fast operation speed, and low energy consumption characteristics. This is especially important as the present semiconductor manufacturing technique is approaching the end of miniaturization campaign in the near future. Here, a superior metal-insulator transition (MIT) of a 1D VO2 nanochannel constructed through an electric-field-induced oxygen ion migration process in V2 O5 thin film is reported for the first time. A sharp and reliable MIT transition with a steep turn-on voltage slope of <0.5 mV dec-1 , fast switching speed of 17 ns, low energy consumption of 8 pJ, and low variability of <4.3% is demonstrated in the VO2 nanochannel device. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy observation and theoretical computation verify that the superior electrical properties of the present device can be ascribed to the electroformation of nanoscale VO2 nanochannel in V2 O5 thin films. More importantly, the incorporation of the present device into a Pt/HfO2 /Pt/VO2 /Pt 1S1R unit can ensure the correct reading of the HfO2 memory continuously for 107 cycles, therefore demonstrating its great possibility as a reliable selector in high-density crossbar memory arrays.

Purpose: Adoptive T-cell therapy using autologous tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) has shown an overall clinical response rate 40%-50% in metastatic melanoma patients. BTLA (B-and-T lymphocyte associated) expression on transferred CD8+ TILs was associated with better clinical outcome. The suppressive function of the ITIM and ITSM motifs of BTLA is well described. Here, we sought to determine the functional characteristics of the CD8+BTLA+TIL subset and define the contribution of the Grb2 motif of BTLA in T-cell costimulation.Experimental Design: We determined the functional role and downstream signal of BTLA in both human CD8+ TILs and mouse CD8+ T cells. Functional assays were used including single-cell analysis, reverse-phase protein array (RPPA), antigen-specific vaccination models with adoptively transferred TCR-transgenic T cells as well as patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model using immunodeficient NOD-scid IL2Rgammanull (NSG) tumor-bearing mice treated with autologous TILs.Results: CD8+BTLA- TILs could not control tumor growth in vivo as well as their BTLA+ counterpart and antigen-specific CD8+BTLA- T cells had impaired recall response to a vaccine. However, CD8+BTLA+ TILs displayed improved survival following the killing of a tumor target and heightened "serial killing" capacity. Using mutants of BTLA signaling motifs, we uncovered a costimulatory function mediated by Grb2 through enhancing the secretion of IL-2 and the activation of Src after TCR stimulation.Conclusions: Our data portrays BTLA as a molecule with the singular ability to provide both costimulatory and coinhibitory signals to activated CD8+ T cells, resulting in extended survival, improved tumor control, and the development of a functional recall response. Flexible and transparent resistive switching memories are highly desired for the construction of portable and even wearable electronics. Upon optimization of the microstructure wherein an amorphous-nanocrystalline hafnium oxide thin film is fabricated, an all-oxide based transparent RRAM device with stable resistive switching behavior that can withstand a mechanical tensile stress of up to 2.12% is obtained. It is demonstrated that the superior electrical, thermal and mechanical performance of the ITO/HfOx/ITO device can be ascribed to the formation of pseudo-straight metallic hafnium conductive filaments in the switching layer, and is only limited by the choice of electrode materials. When the ITO bottom electrode is replaced with platinum metal, the mechanical failure threshold of the device can be further extended.

Cancer cells modulate the recruitment and function of inflammatory cells to create an immunosuppressive microenvironment that favors tumor growth and metastasis. However, the tumor-derived regulatory programs that promote intratumoral immunosuppression remain poorly defined. Here, we show in a KrasLA1/+p53R172HΔg/+-based mouse model that bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP4) augments the expression of the T cell co-inhibitory receptor ligand PD-L1 in the mesenchymal subset of lung cancer cells, leading to profound CD8+ T cell-mediated immunosuppression, producing tumor growth and metastasis. We previously reported in this model that BMP4 functions as a pro-tumorigenic factor regulated by miR-200 via GATA4/6. Thus, BMP4-mediated immunosuppression is part of a larger miR-200-directed gene expression program in tumors that promotes tumor progression, which could have important implications for cancer treatment.

Switching luminescence of lanthanide-based molecules through an external electric field is considered as a promising approach toward novel functional molecule-based devices. Classic routes use casted films and liquid electrolyte as media for redox reactions. Such protocol, even if efficient, is relatively hard to turn into an effective solid-state device. In this work, we explicitly synthesize lanthanide-based dimers whose luminescent behavior is affected by the presence of Cu(2+) ions. Excellent evaporability of the dimers and utilization of Cu(2+)-based solid-state electrolyte makes it possible to reproduce solution behavior at the solid state. Reversible modulation of Cu(2+) ions transport can be achieved by an electric field in a solid-state device, where lanthanide-related luminescence is driven by an electric field. These findings provide a proof-of-concept alternative approach for electrically driven modulation of solid-state luminescence and show promising potential for information storage media in the future.

Through rational organization of two redox active building block, a triphenylamine-based metal-organic framework (MOF) material, Cu-TCA (H3TCA = tricarboxytriphenyl amine), was synthesized and applied as a cathode active material for the first time in lithium batteries. Cu-TCA exhibited redox activity both in the metal clusters (Cu(+)/Cu(2+)) and organic ligand radicals (N/N(+)) with separated voltage plateaus and a high working potential vs Li/Li(+) up to 4.3 V, comparing with the current commercial LiCoO2 cathode materials. The electrochemical behaviors of this MOF electrode material at different states of charge were carefully studied by cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence techniques. Long cycling stability of this MOF was achieved with an average Coulombic efficiency of 96.5% for 200 cycles at a 2 C rate. Discussing the electrochemical performances on the basis of capacity contributions from the metal clusters (Cu(+)/Cu(2+)) and organic ligands (N/N(+)) proposes an alternative mechanism of capacity loss for the MOF materials used in lithium batteries. This improved understanding will shed light on the designing principle of MOF-based cathode materials for their practical application in battery sciences.

The organization of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) on surfaces via thermal sublimation is a prerequisite for the development of future devices for spintronics exploiting the richness of properties offered by these magnetic molecules. However, a change in the SMM properties due to the interaction with specific surfaces is usually observed. Here we present a rare example of an SMM system that can be thermally sublimated on gold surfaces while maintaining its intact chemical structure and magnetic properties. Muon spin relaxation and ac susceptibility measurements are used to demonstrate that, unlike other SMMs, the magnetic properties of this system in thin films are very similar to those in the bulk, throughout the full volume of the film, including regions near the metal and vacuum interfaces. These results exhibit the robustness of chemical and magnetic properties of this complex and provide important clues for the development of nanostructures based on SMMs.

A pilot-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSFCW) was operated to purify industrial runoff containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Guangzhou, China. Synthetic industrial runoff was fed into the HSSFCW with continuous flow at an average loading rate of 0.128 m(3)/(m(2)/day) for about 2 years. Pollutants such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP), and phenanthrene were mainly removed in the front quarter of the HSSFCW, and in the vertical direction, the average removal rates of COD, TP, total nitrogen (TN), ammonia, and phenanthrene of the upper layer were 64.23, 71.16, 50.81, 65.38, and 92.47 %, which were 1.23, 2.08, 1.48, 1.72, and 1.17 times higher than those of the bottom, respectively. Correlations among pollutant removal, soil environmental indexes, enzyme activities, and soil microbial community structure were evaluated. Enzyme assays (dehydrogenase, catalase, nitrate reductase, and polyphenol oxidase) showed significant associations between enzyme activities and pollutant removal (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05). Soil microbial community structure was assessed with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting method, and results demonstrated that bacterial communities remained relatively stable in different seasons. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were found to be the dominant phyla of the bacteria communities, and three clones which might be related to the biodegradation of phenanthrene were also detected. Results of the present work would broaden the knowledge of the purification mechanism of contaminants in the constructed wetlands (CWs), and identification of the treatment performances and temporal and spatial variations of biological activities of subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSFCWs) would help to improve the operations of CWs for surface water protection.
