RESUMO

Relaxor ferroelectrics (RFEs) are being actively investigated for energy-storage applications due to their large electric-field-induced polarization with slim hysteresis and fast energy charging-discharging capability. Here, a novel nanograin engineering approach based upon high kinetic energy deposition is reported, for mechanically inducing the RFE behavior in a normal ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.52 Ti0.48 )O3 (PZT), which results in simultaneous enhancement in the dielectric breakdown strength (EDBS ) and polarization. Mechanically transformed relaxor thick films with 4 µm thickness exhibit an exceptional EDBS of 540 MV m-1 and reduced hysteresis with large unsaturated polarization (103.6 µC cm-2 ), resulting in a record high energy-storage density of 124.1 J cm-3 and a power density of 64.5 MW cm-3 . This fundamental advancement is correlated with the generalized nanostructure design that comprises nanocrystalline phases embedded within the amorphous matrix. Microstructure-tailored ferroelectric behavior overcomes the limitations imposed by traditional compositional design methods and provides a feasible pathway for realization of high-performance energy-storage materials.

RESUMO

We herein report a facile molten-salt synthetic strategy to prepare transparent and uniform Li, Ba-doped (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN) single-crystal microcuboids (∼80 µm). By controlling the degree of supersaturation, different growth modes were found and the single-crystal microcuboids were synthesized via island-like oriented attachment of KNN particles onto the growing surface. The distinct relaxor ferroelectric (RFE) properties were achieved in the single-crystal microcuboids, which were different from the normal ferroelectric (FE) properties found in their KNN ceramic counterparts prepared through a solid-state reaction using the same initial precursors. The RFE properties were realized by dislocation-induced nanodomain formation during oriented attachment growth of single-crystal microcuboids, which is different from the current strategies to derive the nanodomains by the local compositional inhomogeneity or the application of an electric field. The dislocations served as nucleation sites for ferroelectric domain walls and block the growth of domains. The KNN single-crystal microcuboids exhibited a higher effective piezoelectric coefficient (∼459 pm/V) compared to that of the bulk KNN ceramic counterpart (∼90 pm/V) and showed the broad diffuse maxima in the temperature dependence dielectric permittivity. The high maximum polarization (69.6 µC/cm2) at a relatively low electric field (30 kV/cm) was beneficial for energy storage applications. Furthermore, the KNN-based transparent, flexible pressure sensor directly monitored the mechanical motion of human activity without any external electric power. This study provides insights and synthetic strategies of single-crystal RFE microcuboids for other different perovskites, in which nanodomain structures are primarily imposed by their chemical composition.

RESUMO

Various supraparticles have been extensively studied owing to their excellent catalytic properties that are attributed to their inherent porous structure; however, their mechanical properties have not garnered attention owing to their less dense structure. We demonstrate a rational approach for fabricating assembled supraparticles and, subsequently, highly dense microspheres. In addition, 3 mol % yttria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) and alumina particles were selected as building blocks and assembled into higher-order architectures using a droplet-based template method (spray drying) for validation with proof-of-concept. Moreover, structural features such as density, size, sphericity, and morphology of supraparticles were controlled by adjusting the competing kinetics occurring between the assembly of building blocks and evaporation of the solvent in the droplets. The preparatory aqueous suspension and process parameters were optimized as well. A detailed understanding of the formation mechanism facilitated the yield of tailor-made supraparticles and, thereafter, highly dense microspheres (approximate relative density = 99%) with excellent sphericity (>98%) via heat treatment. The microspheres displayed highest hardness (26.77 GPa) and superior elastic modulus (210.19 GPa) compared with the mechanical properties of the 3YSZ samples reported to date. Ultimately, the proposed supraparticle engineering provided insight for controlling the structural features and resultant micromechanical properties, which widely extends the applicability of supraparticle-based functional materials for practical purposes that require materials with high density and excellent mechanical properties.

RESUMO

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with a complex genetic etiology. Besides the apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE ε4) allele, a few dozen other genetic loci associated with AD have been identified through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) conducted mainly in individuals of European ancestry. Recently, several GWAS performed in other ethnic groups have shown the importance of replicating studies that identify previously established risk loci and searching for novel risk loci. APOE-stratified GWAS have yielded novel AD risk loci that might be masked by, or be dependent on, APOE alleles. We performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) on DNA from blood samples of 331 AD patients and 169 elderly controls of Korean ethnicity who were APOE ε4 carriers. Based on WGS data, we designed a customized AD chip (cAD chip) for further analysis on an independent set of 543 AD patients and 894 elderly controls of the same ethnicity, regardless of their APOE ε4 allele status. Combined analysis of WGS and cAD chip data revealed that SNPs rs1890078 (P = 6.64E-07) and rs12594991 (P = 2.03E-07) in SORCS1 and CHD2 genes, respectively, are novel genetic variants among APOE ε4 carriers in the Korean population. In addition, nine possible novel variants that were rare in individuals of European ancestry but common in East Asia were identified. This study demonstrates that APOE-stratified analysis is important for understanding the genetic background of AD in different populations.

RESUMO

In this paper, we demonstrated a multiscale micro- and nano-structured magneto-mechano-triboelectric nanogenerator (MMTENG) enabled by a salt particle imprinting process to power an internet of thing (IoT) sensor. The fine salt particles were utilized to form a multiscale structure on a triboelectric polymer film by mechanical pressure via an eco-friendly, low-cost, and simple process, thereby reinforcing the contact triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. The surface modified MMTENG can generate an open-circuit peak-to-peak voltage of 851 V, a short-circuit current of 155 µA, and a maximum peak power of 10.3 mW under an AC magnetic field of 8 Oe. The energy device also presented output stability over 124 million operating cycles. Finally, the electricity of the surface enhanced MMTENG device was directly utilized to power an IoT temperature sensor with integration of an energy harvester, energy conversion circuit, and storage capacitor.

RESUMO

We investigated the association between herpes zoster (HZ) and dementia, and the effects of antiviral therapy on the risk of dementia. We used the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort in South Korea to identify individuals that were followed from January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2013. Occurrences of HZ and dementia were identified using the relevant diagnostic codes. Dementia was defined as the presence of diagnostic codes and history of anti-dementia drug prescription. Propensity score matching (1:1) was carried out among HZ patients according to antiviral therapy. A total of 229,594 individuals aged ≥50 years were analyzed. The incidences of the first-diagnosed HZ and dementia were 16.69 and 4.67 per 1000 person-years (PY), respectively. HZ patients had a higher risk of dementia (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.94 [95% CI 1.83-2.06]; adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.12 [95% CI 1.05-1.19]). Of the 34,505 patients with HZ, 28,873 (84%) had received antiviral treatment. The crude incidence rates of subsequent dementia in the treated and untreated groups were 7.79 and 12.27 per 1000 PY, respectively, resulting in an IRR of 0.64 (95% CI 0.56-0.72) and covariate-adjusted HR of 0.79 (95% CI 0.69-0.90). After propensity score matching, the treated group showed a significantly lower risk of dementia (HR 0.76; 95% CI 0.65-0.90). In this large population-based cohort study, HZ was associated with a higher risk of dementia. The use of antiviral agents in HZ patients was associated with lower risks of dementia.

RESUMO

While white matter impairments play an integral part in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the literature on white matter abnormality differences between the two disorders is insufficient. The University of California Los Angeles Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Phenomic LA5c public dataset, including 47 patients with schizophrenia, 47 with bipolar disorder, and 115 healthy controls, was obtained via OpenNeuro. Whole-brain tractography was performed using Unscented Kalman filter-based two-tensor tractography and White Matter Query Language. Diffusion indices, including fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity, radial diffusivity (RD), and trace (TR), were used to compare subject groups. Spearman's partial correlation with a covariate of age was used for correlation with clinical variables. Both patient groups exhibited significantly higher RD in the left external capsule and TR in the right extreme capsule. Significantly lower FA in the left external capsule, right thalamo-occipital and thalamo-parietal tracts were found in the schizophrenia group in comparison with bipolar disorder and healthy control groups. Compared with healthy controls, patients with schizophrenia had significantly lower FA in the left-to-right lateral orbitofrontal commissural tract. There were possible associations of the FA and RD of the left external capsule with the anxiety-depression score of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale in patients with schizophrenia. The white matter alterations identified in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder may be a neurobiological basis contributing to characterization of the two disorders.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Despite a large number of resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) studies in schizophrenia, current evidence on the abnormalities of functional connectivity (FC) of resting-state networks shows high variability, and the findings on recent-onset schizophrenia are insufficient compared to those on chronic schizophrenia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a rsfMRI in 46 patients with recent-onset schizophrenia and 22 healthy controls. Group independent component brainmap and dual regression were performed for voxel-wise comparisons between the groups. Correlation of the symptom severity, cognitive function, duration of illness, and a total antipsychotics dose with FC was evaluated with Spearman's rho correlation. RESULTS: The patient group had areas with a significantly decreased FC compared to that of the control group in which it existed in the left supplementary motor cortex and supramarginal gyrus (the executive control network) and the right postcentral gyrus (the auditory network). The patient group had a significant correlation of the total antipsychotics dose with the FC of the cluster in the left supplementary motor cortex in the executive control network. CONCLUSION: Patients with recent-onset schizophrenia have decreased FC of the executive control and auditory networks compared to healthy controls.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Diffusion tensor imaging has been extensively applied to schizophrenia research. In this study, we counted the number of abnormal brain regions with altered diffusion measures in patients with schizophrenia to enumerate the burden of abnormal diffusivity in the brain. METHODS: The public neuroimaging data of the COBRE project from SchizConnect were used for the study. The studied dataset consisted of data from 57 patients with schizophrenia and 71 healthy participants. FreeSurfer and FSL were applied for image processing and analysis. After verifying 161 regions of interest (ROIs), mean diffusion measures in every single ROI in all study participants were measured and normalized into Z-scores. Each ROI was then defined as normal or abnormal on the basis of a cutoff absolute Z-score of 1.96. The number of abnormal ROIs was obtained by each diffusion measure. RESULTS: The numbers of ROIs with increased radial diffusivity and increased trace were significantly larger in the patient group than in healthy participants. CONCLUSION: Thus, the patient group showed a significant increase in abnormal ROIs, strongly indicating that schizophrenia is not caused by the pathology of a single brain region, but is instead attributable to the additive burden of structural alterations within multiple brain regions.

RESUMO

As one of the perovskite families, potassium sodium niobates (K1-xNax)NbO3 (KNN) have been gaining tremendous attention due to their various functional properties which can be largely determined by their crystallographic phase and composition. However, a selective evolution of different phases for KNN with controlled composition can be difficult to achieve, especially in solution chemical synthesis because of its strong tendency to stabilize into orthorhombic phase at conventional synthetic temperature. We herein developed a facile solution approach to control the phase and composition of dopant-free KNN particles selectively through the modification of reaction parameters. A conventional hydrothermal synthesis method yielded orthorhombic KNN particles, while the monoclinic phase, which has never been observed in a bulk counterpart, was kinetically generated by the compositional modification of an intermediate phase under a high-intensity ultrasound irradiation. Cubic KNN particles were stabilized when ethylene glycol was used as a co-solvent together with deionized water through bonding between ethylene glycol molecules and the surface of the KNN. Composite-structured piezoelectric harvesters were fabricated using each phase of KNN particles and the ß-phase poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) polymer. Maximum output power was found for the harvester containing orthorhombic KNN particles. This facile synthetic methodology could pave a new pathway for fabricating numerous phase-controlled materials.

RESUMO

Designing a piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) with high power density and high fatigue resistance is essential for the successful replacement of the currently using batteries in structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. Among the various designs, the PEH comprising of a cantilever structure as a passive layer and piezoelectric single crystal-based fiber composites (SFC) as an active layer showed excellent performance due to its high electromechanical properties and dynamic flexibilities that are suitable for low frequency vibrations. In the present study, an effort was made to investigate the reliable performance of hard and soft SFC based PEHs. The base acceleration of both PEHs is held at 7 m/s2 and the frequency of excitation is tuned to their resonant frequency (fr) and then the output power (Prms) is monitored for 107 fatigue cycles. The effect of fatigue cycles on the output voltage, vibration displacement, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of PEHs was analyzed. It was noticed that fatigue-induced performance degradation is more prominent in soft SFC-based PEH (SS-PEH) than in hard SFC-based PEH (HS-PEH). The HS-PEH showed a slight degradation in the output power due to a shift in fr, however, no degradation in the maximum power was noticed, in fact, dielectric and ferroelectric properties were improved even after 107 vibration cycles. In this context, the present study provides a pathway to consider the fatigue life of piezoelectric material for the designing of PEH to be used at resonant conditions for long-term operation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Working memory impairments serve as prognostic factors for patients with schizophrenia. Working memory deficits are mainly associated with gray matter (GM) thickness and volume. We investigated the association between GM diffusivity and working memory in controls and individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: T1 and diffusion tensor images of the brain, working memory task (letter number sequencing) scores, and the demographic data of 90 individuals with schizophrenia and 97 controls were collected from the SchizConnect database. T1 images were parcellated into the 68 GM Regions of Interest (ROI). Axial Diffusivity (AD), Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Radial Diffusivity (RD), and Trace (TR) were calculated for each of the ROIs. RESULTS: Compared to the controls, schizophrenia group showed significantly increased AD, RD, and TR in specific regions on the frontal, temporal, and anterior cingulate area. Moreover, working memory was negatively correlated with AD, RD, and TR in the lateral orbitofrontal, superior temporal, inferior temporal, and rostral anterior cingulate area on left hemisphere in the individuals with schizophrenia. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrated GM microstructural abnormalities in the frontal, temporal, and anterior cingulate regions of individuals with schizophrenia. Furthermore, these regional GM microstructural abnormalities suggest a neuropathological basis for the working memory deficits observed clinically in individuals with schizophrenia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The role of antidepressants (ADs) in bipolar disorder is long-standing controversial issue in psychiatry. Many clinicians have used ADs as a treatment for bipolar depression, and the selection of therapeutic agents is very diverse and inconsistent. This study aimed to examine recent AD prescription patterns for patients with bipolar disorder in Korea, using the nationwide, population-based data. METHODS: This study utilized the Korean nationwide, whole population-based registry data of the year 2010, 2011, and 2013. All prescription data of the ADs, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers of the sampled patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder (n = 2,022 [in 2010]; 2,038 [in 2011]; 2,626 [in 2013]) were analyzed for each year. RESULTS: Annual prescription rate of ADs was 27.3%-33.6% in bipolar disorder, which was gradually increasing over the 3-year period. The combination pattern of ADs and antipsychotic drugs tended to increase over 3 years. The proportion of females and the prevalence of comorbid anxiety disorder were significantly higher in AD user group in all three years. Among individual ADs, escitalopram was prescribed most frequently, and fluoxetine and bupropion were prescribed to the next many patients. The mean duration of bipolar depressive episodes was 135.90-152.53 days, of which ADs were prescribed for 115.60-121.98 days. CONCLUSION: Our results show prescription rate of ADs in bipolar disorder was maintained at substantial level and increased in recent 3 years. More empirical data and evidence are needed to establish practical treatment consensuses.

RESUMO

Several studies have produced extensive evidence on white matter abnormalities in schizophrenia (SZ). However, optimum consistency and reproducibility have not been achieved, and reported low white matter tract integrity in patients with SZ varies between studies. A whole-brain imaging study with a large sample size is needed. This study aimed to investigate white matter integrity in the corpus callosum and connections between regions of interests (ROIs) in the same hemisphere in 122 patients with SZ and 129 healthy controls with public neuroimaging data from SchizConnect. For each diffusion-weighted image (DWI), two-tensor full-brain tractography was performed; DWIs were parcellated by processing and registering T1 images with FreeSurfer and Advanced Normalization Tools. White matter query language was used to extract white matter fiber tracts. We evaluated group differences in means of diffusion measures between the patients and controls, and correlations of diffusion measures with the severity of clinical symptoms and cognitive impairment in the patients using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), a letter-number sequencing (LNS) test, vocabulary test, letter fluency test, category fluency test, and trail-making test, part A. To correct for multiple comparisons, a false discovery rate of q < 0.05 was applied. In patients with SZ, we observed significant radial diffusivity (RD) and trace (TR) increases in left thalamo-occipital tracts and the right uncinate fascicle, and a significant RD increase in the right middle longitudinal fascicle (MDLF) and the right superior longitudinal fascicle ii. Correlations were present between TR of left thalamo-occipital tracts, and the letter fluency test and the LNS test, and RD in the right MDLF and PANSS positive subscale score. However, these correlations were not significant after correction for multiple comparisons. These results indicated widespread white matter fiber tract abnormalities in patients with SZ, contributing to SZ pathophysiology.

RESUMO

We report the effect of epoxy adhesion layers with different mechanical or physical property on a magnetoelectric (ME) composite laminate composed of FeBSi alloy (Metglas)/single-crystal Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O3/Metglas to achieve an improved ME conversion performance. Through theoretical simulation, it was revealed that the Young's modulus and the thickness of interfacial adhesives were major parameters that influence the conversion efficiency in ME composites. In the experimental evaluation, we utilized three epoxy materials with a distinct Young's modulus and adjusted the average thickness of the adhesion layers to optimize the ME conversion. The experimental results show that a thin epoxy layer with a high Young's modulus provided the best performance in the inorganic-based ME conversion process. By tailoring the interfacial adhesion property, the ME laminate generated a high conversion coefficient of 328.8 V/(cm Oe), with a mechanical quality factor of 132.0 at the resonance mode. Moreover, we demonstrated a highly sensitive alternating current magnetic field sensor that had a detection resolution below 10 pT. The optimization of the epoxy layers in the ME laminate composite provided significant enhancement of the ME response in a simple manner.

RESUMO

Schizophrenia is a heterogenous neuropsychiatric disorder with varying degrees of altered connectivity in a wide range of brain areas. Network analysis using graph theory allows researchers to integrate and quantify relationships between widespread changes in a network system. This study examined the organization of brain structural networks by applying diffusion MRI, probabilistic tractography, and network analysis to 48 schizophrenia patients and 24 healthy controls. T1-weighted MR images obtained from all participants were parcellated into 87 regions of interests (ROIs) according to a prior anatomical template and registered to diffusion-weighted images (DWI) of the same subjects. Probabilistic tractography was performed to obtain sets of white matter tracts between any two ROIs and determine the connection probabilities between them. Connectivity matrices were constructed using these estimated connectivity probabilities, and several network properties related to network effectiveness were calculated. Global efficiency, local efficiency, clustering coefficient, and mean connectivity strength were significantly lower in schizophrenia patients (p = 0.042, p = 0.011, p = 0.013, p = 0.046). Mean betweenness centrality was significantly higher in schizophrenia (p = 0.041). Comparisons of node wise properties showed trends toward differences in several brain regions. Nodal local efficiency was consistently lower in the basal ganglia, frontal, temporal, cingulate, diencephalon, and precuneus regions in the schizophrenia group. Inter-group differences in nodal degree and nodal betweenness centrality varied by region and showed inconsistent results. Robustness was not significantly different between the study groups. Significant positive correlations were found between t-score of color trails test part-1 and local efficiency and mean connectivity strength in the patient group. The findings of this study suggest that schizophrenia results in deterioration of the global network organization of the brain and reduced ability for information processing.

RESUMO

A ceramic substrate must not only have an excellent thermal performance but also be thin, since the electronic devices have to become thin and small in the electronics industry of the next generation. In this manuscript, a thin ceramic substrate (thickness: 30-70 µm) is reported for the next generation ceramic substrate. It is fabricated by a new process [granule spray in vacuum (GSV)] which is a room temperature process. For the thin ceramic substrates, AlN GSV films are deposited on Al substrates and their electric/thermal properties are compared to those of the commercial ceramic substrates. The thermal resistance is significantly reduced by using AlN GSV films instead of AlN bulk-ceramics in thermal management systems. It is due to the removal of a thermal interface material which has low thermal conductivity. In particular, the dielectric strengths of AlN GSV films are much higher than those of AlN bulk-ceramics which are commercialized, approximately 5 times. Therefore, it can be expected that this GSV film is a next generation substrate in thermal management systems for the high power application.

RESUMO

In this manuscript, an interesting phenomenon is reported. That is the self-growth of single crystals in Pb-free piezoelectric ceramics. These crystals are several centimeters in size. They are grown without any seed addition through a normal sintering process in modified potassium sodium niobate ceramics. It has been achieved by the composition designed to compensate the Na(+) loss which occurs during the liquid phase sintering. The composition of the crystals is (K0.4925Na(0.4925-x)Ba(0.015+x/2))Nb(0.995+x)O3 [x is determined by the Na(+) loss, due to Na2O volatilization]. These crystals have high piezoelectric voltage coefficients (g33, 131 10(-3)Vm/N), indicating that they are good candidates for piezoelectric sensors and energy harvesting devices. We hope that this report can offer the opportunity for many researchers to have an interest in these crystals.

RESUMO

Thick polycrystalline pure PbTiO3 films with nano size grains were synthesized for the first time by aerosol deposition. Annealed 7 µm thick films exhibit well-saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loops with a remanent polarization and coercive field of 35 µC/cm(2) and 94 kV/cm, respectively. A large-signal effective d33,eff value of >60 pm/V is achieved at room temperature. The measured ferroelectric transition temperature (Tc) of the films ∼550 °C is >50 °C higher than the reported values (∼490 °C) for PbTiO3 ceramics. First-principles calculations combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and structural analysis indicate that the film is composed of nano size grains with slightly decreased tetragonality. There is no severe off-stoichiometry, but a high compressive in-plane residual stress was observed in the film along with a high transition temperature and piezoelectric response. The ferroelectric characteristics were sustained until 200 °C, providing significant advancement toward realizing high temperature piezoelectric materials.

RESUMO

We report a case of spontaneous bilateral intracranial vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms with subarachnoid hemorrhage. One dissecting lesion was treated with a coronary balloon-mounted stent (BMS) technique; however, due to differences in access route tortuosity, the other lesion was treated with a self-expandable stent (SES) technique. After 2 months, the angiographic outcome showed complete healing of the dissected segment on the side that was treated with BMS; in contrast, the dissection lesion appeared to be re-growing on the side that was treated with SES. Complete treatment of the aggravated lesion was achieved by additional deployment of BMSs. Therefore, we have provided a discussion of the possible reasons for this difference in outcome according to the stent type.
