OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in mandibular third molar extraction and provide suggestions for alleviating postoperative complications. METHODS: Pubmed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and SinoMed were searched electronically on February 2020. Randomized controlled trials focusing on PRF usage in mandibular third molar extraction were included. Reviewers assessed the risk of bias in the included literature and extracted data independently using the criteria recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 and STATA 13.0. RESULTS: Twenty-one studies were included, comprising 991 patients who had mandibular third molar extraction. The topical application of PRF effectively reduced pain after extraction [MD=-12.06, 95%CI (-21.42, -2.71), P=0.01], attenuated post-extraction swelling [MD=-1.42, 95%CI (-2.41, -0.44), P=0.005], and promoted soft tissue hea-ling [MD=0.66, 95%CI (0.34, 0.99), P<0.000 1]. PRF significantly reduced trismus and alveolar osteitis (P<0.05). However, data could not prove whether PRF has any significant positive effect on bone healing compared with the control group (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Limited clinical evidence indicates that applying PRF after mandibular third molar extraction could reduce pain, swelling, trismus and the occurrence of dry socket and promote soft tissue healing. However, the effect of PRF on bone healing requires further large-scale randomized controlled trials and unified measurement criteria.

A novel and unusual 3D luminescent coordination polymer (CP) [Zn2(3-bpah)(bpta)(H2O)]·3H2O (1), where 3-bpah denotes N,N'-bis(3-pyridinecarboxamide)-1,2-cyclohexane and H4bpta denotes 2,2',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal methods from Zn(II) ions and 3-bpah and bpta ligands. The structure of this CP was investigated via powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis along with single crystal X-ray diffraction. Notably, 1 exhibits remarkable fluorescence behavior and stability over a wide pH range and in various pure organic solvents. More importantly, 1 can become an outstanding candidate for the selective and sensitive sensing of Fe3+, Mg2+, Cr2O72-, MnO4-, nitrobenzene (NB) and nitromethane (NM), at an extremely low detection limit. The changes in the fluorescence intensity exhibited by these six analytes in the presence of 1 over a wide pH range indicate that this polymer can be an excellent luminescent sensor. To the best of our knowledge, 1 is a rare example of a CP-based multiresponsive fluorescent sensor for metal cations, anions, and toxic organic solvents.

BACKGROUND: Recently, functional homotopy (FH) architecture, defined as robust functional connectivity (FC) between homotopic regions, has been frequently reported to be altered in MDD patients (MDDs) but with divergent locations. METHODS: In this study, we obtained resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) data from 1004 MDDs (mean age, 33.88 years; age range, 18-60 years) and 898 matched healthy controls (HCs) from an aggregated dataset from 20 centers in China. We focused on interhemispheric function integration in MDDs and its correlation with clinical characteristics using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) devised to inquire about FH patterns. RESULTS: As compared with HCs, MDDs showed decreased VMHC in visual, motor, somatosensory, limbic, angular gyrus, and cerebellum, particularly in posterior cingulate gyrus/precuneus (PCC/PCu) (false discovery rate [FDR] q < .002, z =-7.07). Further analysis observed that the reduction in SMG and insula was more prominent with age, of which SMG reflected such age-related change in males instead of females. Besides, the reduction of MTG was found to be a male-special abnormal pattern in MDDs. VMHC alterations were markedly related to episode type and illness severity. The higher Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score, the more apparent VMHC reduction in the primary visual cortex. First-episode MDDs revealed stronger VMHC reduction in PCu relative to recurrent MDDs. CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed a significant VMHC reduction in MDDs in broad areas, especially in PCC/PCu. This reduction was affected by gender, age, episode type, and illness severity. These findings suggest that the depressive brain tends to disconnect information exchange across hemispheres.

Background: The incidence rate of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Taiwan is the highest worldwide. Patients often hesitate and feel helpless when deciding whether to receive dialysis. However, the resulting delay in starting dialysis can potentially threaten patients' lives. Purpose: This study aimed to understand the current situation and correlations between hope, social support, and decisional conflict among patients with ESRD deciding whether to receive dialysis. In addition, the role of social support as a mediating variable of the relationship between hope and decisional conflict was investigated. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional, descriptive correlation study. Data, including demographic information, were collected from 85 patients with ESRD who were deciding whether to receive dialysis. Research tools included the Chinese versions of the Herth Hope Index, the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List, and the Decisional Conflict Scale. Results: When deciding whether to receive dialysis, patients with ESRD felt a low sense of hope, a moderate degree of social support, and a moderate degree of decisional conflict. Hope was significantly correlated with social support and decisional conflict. Social support demonstrated a full mediating effect of 47.7% (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Patients with ESRD facing the decision to receive dialysis felt a low sense of hope and exhibited decisional conflict. Social support was found to be a mediating variable of the relationship between hope and decisional conflict; therefore, medical personnel should increase the social support of patients with ESRD who are deciding whether to commence dialysis to promote patients' hope and reduce their decisional conflict.

Curcumin is a polyphenol substance considered to be effective in the treatment of a number of neurodegenerative diseases. However, details regarding the exact mechanisms for the protective effects of curcumin in neuropsychiatric disorders, like depression, remain unknown. In the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD) it appears that dysregulation of oxidative stress and immune systems, particularly within the hippocampal region, may play a critical role. Here, we show that pre-treatment with curcumin (40 mg kg-1) alleviates depression-like behaviors in a LPS-induced rat model of depression, effects which were accompanied with suppression of oxidative stress and inflammation and an inhibition of neuronal apoptosis in the hippocampal CA1 region, and results from ultramicrostructure electrophysiological experiments revealed that the curcumin pre-treatment significantly prevented excessive synaptic loss and enhanced synaptic functioning in this LPS-induced rat model. In addition, curcumin attenuated the increases in levels of miR-146a-5p and decreases in the expression of p-ERK signaling that would normally occur within CA1 regions of these depressed rats. Taken together, these results demonstrated that curcumin exerts neuroprotective and antidepressant activities by suppressing oxidative stress, neural inflammation and their related effects upon synaptic dysregulation. One of the mechanisms for these beneficial effects of curcumin appears to involve the miR-146a-5p/ERK signaling pathway within the hippocampal CA1 region. These findings not only elucidated some of the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective/antidepressant effects of curcumin, but also suggested a role of curcumin as a potential therapeutic strategy for depression.

O-GlcNAcylation is a nutrient-driven post-translational modification known as a metabolic sensor that links metabolism to cellular function. Recent evidences indicate that the activation of O-GlcNAc pathway is a potential pro-survival pathway and that acute enhancement of this response is conducive to the survival of cells and tissues. 2-(4-Methoxyphenyl)ethyl-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-ß-d-pyranoside (SalA-4g), is a salidroside analogue synthesized in our laboratory by chemical structure-modification, with a phenyl ring containing a para-methoxy group and a sugar ring consisting of N-acetylglucosamine. We have previously shown that SalA-4g elevates levels of protein O-GlcNAc and improves neuronal tolerance to ischemia. However, the specific target of SalA-4g regulating O-GlcNAcylation remains unknown. To address these questions, in this study, we have focused on mitochondrial network homeostasis mediated by O-GlcNAcylation in SalA-4g's neuroprotection in primary cortical neurons under ischemic-like conditions. O-GlcNAc-modified mitochondria induced by SalA-4g demonstrated stronger neuroprotection under oxygen glucose deprivation and reoxygenation stress, including the improvement of mitochondrial homeostasis and bioenergy, and inhibition of mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. Blocking mitochondrial protein O-GlcNAcylation with OSMI-1 disrupted mitochondrial network homeostasis and antagonized the protective effects of SalA-4g. Collectively, these data demonstrate that mitochondrial homeostasis mediated by mitochondrial protein O-GlcNAcylation is critically involved in SalA-4g neuroprotection.

Cancer and its associated conditions have significant impacts on public health at many levels worldwide, and cancer is the leading cause of death among adults. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα)-specific agonists, fibrates, have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for managing hyperlipidemia. PPARα-specific agonists exert anti-cancer effects in many human cancer types, including glioblastoma (GBM). Recently, we have reported that the hypoxic state in GBM stabilizes hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α), thus contributing to tumor escape from immune surveillance by activating the expression of the pH-regulating protein carbonic anhydrase IX (CA9). In this study, we aimed to study the regulatory effects of the PPARα agonist fibrate on the regulation of HIF-1α expression and its downstream target protein in GBM. Our findings showed that fenofibrate is the high potency compound among the various fibrates that inhibit hypoxia-induced HIF-1α and CA9 expression in GBM. Moreover, fenofibrate-inhibited HIF-1α expression is mediated by HO-1 activation in GBM cells through the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. In addition, fenofibrate-enhanced HO-1 upregulation activates SIRT1 and leads to subsequent accumulation of SIRT1 in the nucleus, which further promotes HIF-1α deacetylation and inhibits CA9 expression. Using a protein synthesis inhibitor, cycloheximide, we also observed that fenofibrate inhibited HIF-1α protein synthesis. In addition, the administration of the proteasome inhibitor MG132 showed that fenofibrate promoted HIF-1α protein degradation in GBM. Hence, our results indicate that fenofibrate is a useful anti-GBM agent that modulates hypoxia-induced HIF-1α expression through multiple cellular pathways.

INTRODUCTION: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder that presents with abdominal pain/discomfort and altered bowel patterns. IBS has multiple potential causes for which conventional medicines have had limited success, resulting in a significant number of patients who do not sensitively respond to pharmacotherapy for a period of 12 months and who develop a continuing symptom profile (described as refractory IBS) and seek help through (non)pharmacological treatments. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture therapy for refractory IBS on the basis of conventional treatments. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 170 eligible patients who meet the Rome IV criteria for refractory IBS will be randomly allocated to receive acupuncture or sham acupuncture. Each patient will receive 12 sessions of acupuncture over 4 weeks and a 4-week follow-up. The primary outcome will be the IBS Symptom Severity Score. Secondary outcomes will include the proportion of participants experiencing adequate relief of global IBS symptoms, the weekly frequency of defecation, the stool properties assessed by the Bristol Grading Scale, the Work and Social Adjustment Scale, the IBS-Quality of Life score, and the Self-Rating Depression Scale and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale anxiety and depression scores. Outcome measures will be collected at baseline, 2 and 4 weeks of the intervention, and 6 and 8 weeks after the intervention. Categorical variables will be compared with Fisher's exact test or the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, and continuous variables will be compared using Student's t-test or the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The entire project has been approved by the ethics committees of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (2020BZYLL0507) and Sichuan Province Regional Institution for Conducting Research on Traditional Chinese Medicine (2020KL-025). The outcomes of the trial will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04276961.

PURPOSE: In response to the pandemic, some public health agencies recommend the wearing of surgical masks in indoor spaces including radiology common reporting rooms. We aim to demonstrate whether mask wearing may lead to increased errors incidence in radiology reports. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our prospective studywas conveyed in 2 parts. Firstly, the participants were surveyed if they believed that mask affected dictation. Then participants performed a dictation: they read artificial radiology reports using a commercial voice recognition (VR) system. They performed this task 5 times, each time donning a different mask in random order: a surgical mask, surgical visor, N-95, combination of 2 surgical masks and no mask. Error rates were compared with the Friedman test followed by pairwise Wilcoxon with bootstrapping. Multivariate Poisson regression was performed to test for interaction effects between potential predictors. RESULTS: 52 members of an academic radiology department participatedin the study (January - March 2021) . 65.4% of survey participants did not think or were not sure whether mask wearing could affect dictation process. Treating the no-mask condition as baseline, our study found that mean error rates significantly increased up to 2 times the baseline rate when a surgical mask, surgical visor, N-95 or a combination of 2 masks was donned (p < 0.0001). No significant differences in error rates were found between the different mask types (p > 0.05). Error rates were higher for participants with shorter VR training time (p < 0.0001) or who were non-native English speakers (p < 0.0001). There were no interaction effects between mask type, VR training time or English nativity, suggesting these variables to be independent predictors for error rate. Academic rank did not significantly affect the error rate. CONCLUSION: radiologists underestimate the influence of masks on dictation accuracy. mask wearing may lead to significant increase in dictational errors.

INTRODUCTION: Pro-protein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) regulates lipoprotein homeostasis in humans. Evolocumab is a selective PCSK9 inhibitor that can reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) level and decrease hypercholesterolemia. The current study aimed to explore whether PCSK9 increases the risk of colorectal cancer. METHODS: First, we utilized the classic intestinal tumor ApcMin/+ mouse model and PCSK9 knock-in (KI) mice to establish ApcMin/+PCSK9(KI) mice. Then, we investigated the effect of PCSK9 overexpression in ApcMin/+PCSK9(KI) mice and PCSK9 inhibition using evolocumab on the progression of intestinal tumors in vivo by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay. RESULTS: ApcMin/+PCSK9(KI) mice had higher numbers and larger sizes of adenomas, with 83.3% of these mice developing adenocarcinoma (vs. 16.7% of ApcMin/+ mice). However, treatment with evolocumab reduced the number and size of adenomas and prevented the development of adenocarcinomas in ApcMin/+ mice. PCSK9 overexpression reduced tumor cell apoptosis, the Bax/bcl-2 ratio, and the levels of cytokine signaling 3 protein (SOCS3) suppressors, but activated Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling in intestinal tumors. In contrast, evolocumab treatment had the opposite effect on ApcMin/+mice. CONCLUSION: PCSK9 might act as an oncogene or have an oncogenic role in the development and progression of colorectal cancer in vivo via activation of JAK2/STAT3/SOCS3 signaling.

Hereditary optic neuropathy (HON) is a group of genetically heterogeneous diseases that cause optic nerve atrophy and lead to substantial visual impairment. HON may present with optic nerve atrophy only or in association with various systemic abnormalities. Although a genetic survey is indispensable for diagnosing HON, conventional sequencing techniques could render its diagnosis challenging. In this study, we attempted to explore the genetic background of patients with HON in Taiwan through capture-based next-generation sequencing targeting 52 HON-related genes. In total, 57 patients from 48 families were recruited, with 6 patients diagnosed as having Leber hereditary optic neuropathy through initial screening for three common variants (m.3460G>A, m.11778G>A, m.14484T>C). Disease-causing genotypes were identified in 14 (33.3%) probands, and OPA1 variants were the most prevalent cause of autosomal HON. Exposure to medications such as ethambutol could trigger an attack of autosomal dominant optic atrophy. WFS1 variants were identified in three probands with variable clinical features in our cohort. Hearing impairment could occur in patients with OPA1 or WFS1 variants. This is the first comprehensive study investigating the genetic characteristics of HON in Taiwan, especially for autosomal HON. Our results could provide useful information for clinical diagnosis and genetic counseling in this field.

Older age, obesity, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are known to increase the risk of hypertension in adults. However, data for children are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between hypertension, age, weight status, and disease severity in 396 children with OSAS. The prevalence rates of hypertension, obesity, and severe OSAS (apnea-hypopnea index ≥10) were 27.0%, 28.0%, and 42.9%, respectively. Weight z-score and apnea-hypopnea index were independently correlated with systolic blood pressure z-score, and minimal blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) was independently associated with diastolic blood pressure z-score. Overall, late childhood/adolescence (odds ratio (OR) = 1.72, 95% CI = 1.05-2.81), obesity (OR, 2.58, 95% CI = 1.58-4.22), and severe OSAS (OR = 2.38, 95% CI = 1.48-3.81) were independent predictors of pediatric hypertension. Furthermore, late childhood/adolescence (OR = 2.50, 95% CI = 1.10-5.71) and abnormal SpO2 (mean SpO2 < 95%; OR = 4.91, 95% CI = 1.81-13.27) independently predicted hypertension in obese children, and severe OSAS (OR = 2.28, 95% CI = 1.27-4.10) independently predicted hypertension in non-obese children. In conclusion, obesity, OSAS severity, and abnormal SpO2 are potentially modifiable targets to improve hypertension while treating children with OSAS.

The bitterness of foodstuffs is often associated with toxicity, which negatively influences product acceptability. However, bitter compounds have many benefits, and a slight bitter taste is sometimes favored. In this review, we summarize the methods used to isolate and evaluate the taste of bitter compounds in different foods. The chemical structures and threshold concentrations of these compounds are also recapped. Although the structures and thresholds of many bitter compounds have been confirmed, further studies are needed to develop detailed bitter-masking strategies and establish the relation between functional groups (hetero-cyclic substituents and bonding types) and taste quality. Furthermore, a comprehensive bitterness database and chemometric data must be provided in order to quickly assess the bitterness of unfamiliar products.

Strigolactones (SLs) are plant hormones that play various roles in plant physiology, including provoking the germination of parasitic weeds Orobanche and Striga. A family of α/ß-hydrolases have been proposed to be the SL receptor proteins. Effective assays for measuring the activity of SL receptors could promote the development of SL-related biology and chemistry. In this study, we developed a new approach called pharmacophore-linked probe virtual screening (PPVS). Its application yielded an effective "off-on" probe named Xilatone Red (XLR). This probe showed a broad spectrum and excellent sensitivity toward SL receptors, including ShD14 (Striga D14), for which the detection limit was determined to be in the micromolar range, outperforming that of the commercial fluorogenic agonist Yoshimulactone Green (YLG). Upon hydrolysis by SL receptors, XLR provided fluorogenic and colorimetric signaling responses. Furthermore, XLR could induce germination of Phelipanche aegyptiaca seeds and prevent Arabidopsis max4-1 branching defects at micromolar concentrations. Our molecular simulations revealed the essential factors in the molecular perception of XLR. We anticipate that this study can prompt the discovery of high-performance SL agonists/antagonists to combat parasitic weeds.

Increasing attention is being focused on the use of polypeptide-based N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists for the treatment of nervous system disorders. In our study on Achyranthes bidentata Blume, we identified an NMDA receptor subtype 2B (NR2B) antagonist that exerts distinct neuroprotective actions. This antagonist is a 33 amino acid peptide, named bidentatide, which contains three disulfide bridges that form a cysteine knot motif. We determined the neuroactive potential of bidentatide by evaluating its in vitro effects against NMDA-mediated excitotoxicity. The results showed that pretreating primary cultured hippocampal neurons with bidentatide prevented NMDA-induced cell death and apoptosis via multiple mechanisms that involved intracellular Ca2+ inhibition, NMDA current inhibition, and apoptosis-related protein expression regulation. These mechanisms were all dependent on bidentatide-induced inhibitory regulation of NR2B-containing NMDA receptors; thus, bidentatide may contribute to the development of neuroprotective agents that would likely possess the high selectivity and safety profiles inherent in peptide drugs.

Porous carbon materials demonstrate extensive applications for their attractive characteristics. Mechanical flexibility is an essential property guaranteeing their durability. After decades of research efforts, compressive brittleness of porous carbon materials is well resolved. However, reversible stretchability remains challenging to achieve due to the intrinsically weak connections and fragile joints of the porous carbon networks. Herein, it is presented that a porous all-carbon material achieving both elastic compressibility and stretchability at large strain from -80% to 80% can be obtained when a unique long-range lamellar multi-arch microstructure is introduced. Impressively, the porous all-carbon material can maintain reliable structural robustness and durability under loading condition of cyclic compressing-stretching process, similar to a real metallic spring. The unique performance renders it as a promising platform for making smart vibration and magnetism sensors, even capable of operating at extreme temperatures. Furthermore, this study provides valuable insights for creating highly stretchable and compressible porous materials from other neat inorganic components for diverse applications in future.

Transposable elements (TEs) initially attracted attention because they comprise a major portion of the genomic sequences in plants and animals. TEs may jump around the genome and disrupt both coding genes as well as regulatory sequences to cause disease. Host cells have therefore evolved various epigenetic and functional RNA-mediated mechanisms to mitigate the disruption of genomic integrity by TEs. TE associated sequences therefore acquire the tendencies of attracting various epigenetic modifiers to induce epigenetic alterations that may spread to the neighboring genes. In addition to posting threats for (epi)genome integrity, emerging evidence suggested the physiological importance of endogenous TEs either as cis-acting control elements for controlling gene regulation or as TE-containing functional transcripts that modulate the transcriptome of the host cells. Recent advances in long-reads sequence analysis technologies, bioinformatics and genetic editing tools have enabled the profiling, precise annotation and functional characterization of TEs despite their challenging repetitive nature. The importance of specific TEs in preimplantation embryonic development, germ cell differentiation and meiosis, cell fate determination and in driving species specific differences in mammals will be discussed.

Aberrant topological organization of whole-brain networks has been inconsistently reported in studies of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), reflecting limited sample sizes. To address this issue, we utilized a big data sample of MDD patients from the REST-meta-MDD Project, including 821 MDD patients and 765 normal controls (NCs) from 16 sites. Using the Dosenbach 160 node atlas, we examined whole-brain functional networks and extracted topological features (e.g., global and local efficiency, nodal efficiency, and degree) using graph theory-based methods. Linear mixed-effect models were used for group comparisons to control for site variability; robustness of results was confirmed (e.g., multiple topological parameters, different node definitions, and several head motion control strategies were applied). We found decreased global and local efficiency in patients with MDD compared to NCs. At the nodal level, patients with MDD were characterized by decreased nodal degrees in the somatomotor network (SMN), dorsal attention network (DAN) and visual network (VN) and decreased nodal efficiency in the default mode network (DMN), SMN, DAN, and VN. These topological differences were mostly driven by recurrent MDD patients, rather than first-episode drug naive (FEDN) patients with MDD. In this highly powered multisite study, we observed disrupted topological architecture of functional brain networks in MDD, suggesting both locally and globally decreased efficiency in brain networks.

A newly-developed "Mouse Forelimb Fixator" and two types of "Batch Mice Moxibustion Device" on the basis of our "Mouse Safe and Fast Fixation Board" (developed in 2012) were introduced in the present paper. The Forelimb Fixator inserted into the base part of the apparatus in tenon and mortise style is used to control the mouse's posture with the forelimbs' acupoints fully exposed, and can realize simultaneous fixation of several mice at the same time. By using the mobility of the base of the single-hole moxibustion frame and the magnet, the distance between the acupoint surface and the tip of the ignited moxa stick can be accurately controlled, and several acupoints of different meridians can be simultaneously stimulated at the same time. Utilizing the porous transparent moxibustion board, the Batch Mice Moxibustion Device can meet the requirement of moxibustion at multiple acupoints at the same time. In addition, these devices are convenient in operation, innovative in creativity, save manpower and material resources, and help improve experimental efficiency and research on moxibustion.

Purinergic signalling adenosine and its A1 receptors have been demonstrated to get involved in the mechanism of acupuncture (needling therapy) analgesia. However, whether purinergic signalling would be responsible for the local analgesic effect of moxibustion therapy, the predominant member in acupuncture family procedures also could trigger analgesic effect on pain diseases, it still remains unclear. In this study, we applied moxibustion to generate analgesic effect on complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory pain rats and detected the purine released from moxibustioned-acupoint by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) approach. Intramuscular injection of ARL67156 into the acupoint Zusanli (ST36) to inhibit the breakdown of ATP showed the analgesic effect of moxibustion was increased while intramuscular injection of ATPase to speed up ATP hydrolysis caused a reduced moxibustion-induced analgesia. These data implied that purinergic ATP at the location of ST36 acupoint is a potentially beneficial factor for moxibustion-induced analgesia.
